FOREWORD
Welcome to ‘Destination Malawi’ – the official Malawi Tourism Directory for 2010/11 – the first edition of this publication – which I hope has come at a time when our country is repositioning itself as a ‘must see’ destination. Malawi has a diversity of offerings, from beach, bush and wilderness experiences to its rich heritage, as well as being a key destination for both tourism investment and the MICE sector. With its own special array of attractions and things to do, Malawi is quite simply a destination with a unique diversity that ranks it one of the best and rarest places in the world to visit. This directory comes as part of a growing partnership between the Ministry and the entire travel and tourism industry as well as with all key players who have played a part in making this project a success. I wish to thank all advertisers for their efforts to help bring out the best in the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’. I would like to invite more players in Malawi and those packaging Malawi to use this medium, as it presents a consolidated and authenticated guide on Malawi travel and holidays.
POSITIVE GROWTH The tourism industry in Malawi is showing strong signs of positive growth, having weathered the storm of the 2009 global recession. With the Government currently making efforts to improve the infrastructure that serves most of our key attractions, we can all look forward to an exciting period ahead. Wildlife conservation efforts in Malawi are showing signs of recovery, especially in Liwonde National Park and Majete Game Reserve. The Majete Reserve saw visitor
numbers increase to 4,000 in 2009 from only 40 in 2000. Our cultural sector also continues to be a strong product for Malawi. The Kungoni Art Centre in Dedza and various cultural villages offer cultural experiences to both domestic and international tourists. The Department of Tourism, in conjunction with its sister Departments of Culture & Wildlife, will continue to liaise with all industry players, both locally and internationally, to try to ensure that Malawi becomes a better choice for any decision relating to holiday and tourism investment. The new five-star hotel being constructed in the heart of the capital, Lilongwe, will also make Malawi a key destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions and is destined to become a beacon of the Malawi tourism industry. Finally, I wish to invite all of you to come and experience the beauty of our country. You will surely fall in love with Malawi – the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’.

INTRODUCTION
So much more to see and do in the warm heart of Africa
WELCOME to Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. In many ways, it is also the genuinely friendly, safe and undiscovered heart of Africa – an almost off-theradar, small and exclusive destination that is just that little bit different from its better-known neighbours. It’s a place where tourists seem to be travellers. Typically, they are visitors who already know Africa but now seek a more varied and altogether broader experience. In fact, Malawi’s unique selling point is the sheer variety of things to see and do in a comparatively confined area – with more in the pipeline. Although Malawi has no lack of reasonably priced game parks and reserves (there are nine, in fact) with a wide range of species, climates and topographies as well as great birdwatching, the country does not consider itself an out-and-out wildlife viewing safari destination. It is certainly not the principal reason why visitors come. Nevertheless, Malawi’s parks are growing in popularity – as the number of newly built camps and smart lodges

will testify – and overall animal and visitor numbers are increasing as a result of efforts by the Department of National Parks & Wildlife and those working closely with the DNPW. Perhaps like no other nation, Malawi is dominated by a lake. In fact, Lake Malawi, the third-largest in Africa, covers an impressive 20 per cent of the country’s total surface area. It is thought to contain more species of fish – many of them endemic – than any other body of water on Earth.
ATTRACTIONS The main attractions of Lake Malawi are its discreet island hideaway properties, its surprisingly classy lakeside lodges, and the great opportunities to dive, snorkel, kayak, sail and swim in its delightfully warm and crystalclear waters. Away from the lake, visitors are attracted by walking and climbing – especially in the Mulanje Massif, with its soaring peaks of up to 3,000 metres, where
climbers will find excellent facilities including a team of willing porters. Visitors can also go horse riding (even within Nyika National Park) and mountain biking. The Shire Highlands area around Mulanje is at the heart of Malawi’s famous tea-growing region. Both Mulange and Thyolo have tea plantations featuring restored colonial estate houses where guests are treated to old-style service and delicious home cooking. Then there is the cultural life, which has a higher profile in Malawi than in many other African destinations. Most itineraries drawn up by tour operators will include some aspect of the local culture – the cuisine, the ceremonies and the lifestyle – with opportunities to interact with local people. In terms of getting around, the national road network has been greatly improved. Journey times have been shortened between Lake Malawi and both Lilongwe and Blantyre as well as to and from the main parks and reserves. This has made itinerary planning more certain,
allowing tour operators to intensify trips in terms of what to see and do. Nevertheless, getting to Malawi remains a little complicated because there are no direct flights from either Lilongwe or Blantyre to Europe or other destinations beyond Africa. Most visitors will be routed via Africa’s two main airport hubs, Nairobi and Johannesburg. Lilongwe and Blantyre, the commercial centre of Malawi, are both easy to get around. The newly developed area of Lilongwe, just north of the Old Town, has been thoughtfully laid out and will soon boast the country’s first five-star hotel, now under construction alongside the recently completed and imposing new parliament building. Blantyre also has many fine hotels, geared largely to business visitors. Whether one is arriving as a tourist or travelling on business, Malawi is a place that visitors always want to return to; and for those posted to Malawi from overseas, it is a place they don’t ever seem to want to leave.

LAKE MALAWI
Stunning views, excellent diving and fun sailing trips – Lake Malawi has it all
Lake Malawi is one of several impressive lakes that run more or less the length of the Great Rift Valley. It is Africa’s third-largest lake (after Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika) as well as being the second-deepest in Africa and the eighth-largest in the world. The lake stretches for over 580 km from north to south and is 75 km across at its widest point. Occupying about 20 per cent of the total surface area of Malawi, the lake covers an area of 29,600 sq km, most of which is located within the State of Malawi.
LIVELIHOOD Lake Malawi dominates life across much of the country and provides a livelihood for many Malawians. It is a bountiful supplier of fish, with trawlers of up to 17.5 metres in length working its waters, while many small boats also go out each day in search of fish from villages

along the lake. The lake contains more species of fish than any other comparable body of water on Earth. Dotted along the western shore is an assortment of small resorts as well as the occasional campsite or isolated lodge. These stretch from Karonga in the far north, close to the Tanzania border, to the Sunbird Nkopola Lodge (venue for the annual Lake of Stars event) in the south and beyond to the Nkopola Leisure Centre & Campsite just before Mangochi. With soft, sandy beaches lapped by the tropical waters of the lake and shaded by majestic palms, these properties could easily be at the ocean’s edge rather than on an inland sea. Other hideaway lodges
Music festival is a showcase for international talent The Lake of Stars is a three-day music and arts festival held each October at the Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi on the shores of Lake Malawi. In 2010 this event featured acts from Malawi and other African countries as well as from the UK. Previous headline acts from overseas include: Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, the Maccabees, Sway and Noisettes, who were among the top performers at the 2010 festival. As well as being a great musical event, Lake of Stars works on a number of levels as it seeks to boost inbound travel; to promote and nurture Malawi-based
talent; and to provide training for local stage managers and sound technicians. Everyone involved in promoting and running the event is a volunteer, including the sound technicians. The local acts are paid a performance fee, but bands coming from outside give their time for nothing. This is a European-standard event employing the latest and best sound systems available. These are donated from the UK. Fans attending the festivals can either camp or book a room at the lodge or nearby. About 35 per cent of the fans come from overseas and the event is promoted in Kenya, the United States, Germany and the UK.

are perched on small islands out in the lake that can only reached by boat or canoe. As well as lazing on Lake Malawi’s idyllic beaches or secreting themselves away on a rocky island, visitors can enjoy the lake to its fullest. Thanks to the huge array of species in this freshwater lake, the snorkelling and diving is virtually without equal in Africa. Visitors can also go sailing, either in small boats or even overnighting in a large catamaran.
NATIONAL PARK The lake has its own national park, covering just 94 sq km, in a stunningly beautiful location at Cape Maclear. The park was created to protect the lake’s endemic fish species and is Malawi’s only Unesco World Heritage Site. This area was a favourite with the explorer David Livingstone and the graves of five early European missionaries can be found in the park. For those with some time on their hands, one of the truly delightful and mildly adventurous ways to see the lake is to take a trip on the venerable 1949-built ferry ‘Ilala’. The vessel leaves Monkey Bay in the far south of lake each Friday at 10.00 and heads north, making 11 stops (including two in Mozambique) before returning to Monkey Bay the following Wednesday. The ferry has two grades of cabins and is truly an experience to enjoy and savour. Passengers can choose to buy voyage segments from the vessel’s regular round-trip itinerary rather than staying on board for the full six-day trip.
SAILING THE LAKE IN DELUXE STYLE There is only one live-aboard yacht operating on Lake Malawi, the 38 ft catamaran ‘Mufasa’ (named after the Lion King character). Owned by Danforth Yachting, this luxury 10-berth catamaran is based at Danforth Lakeside Lodge at Cape Maclear, a Unesco World Heritage site and the world’s first freshwater marine reserve. The South Africa-built catamaran provides a series of itineraries from Cape Maclear featuring gracious hospitality and exceptional cuisine, with a crew of three to take care of the six pampered guests. Trips can include day sailing, sundowner cruises and multi-day trips in and around the central and southern parts of Lake Malawi. From the yacht, guests can dive, snorkel, fish or swim.

Fisherman’s Rest
Magnificent location overlooking the Shire Valley Fisherman’s Rest provides a cultural gateway to Africa for visitors who want to experience, learn and engage with the enchanting country of Malawi. Situated in its own tranquil atmosphere, Fisherman’s Rest is surrounded by magnificent views over the Great Rift Valley. This is in a private nature reserve in 50 acres of woodland populated by antelope. It offers a swimming pool, a gift shop, lodges, chalets, bush camp hides and a secluded rustic campsite well within the reserve. Visitors can choose to self-cater or eat at the Tea House. Fisherman’s Rest is exceptionally well located for visitors who want to do business in Blantyre while also taking time off to explore the parks and sights of the Lower Shire Valley. It is an ideal venue for workshops and retreats, with broadband connectivity throughout.
The company offers tours and short breaks. These including driving safaris, cycling and walking tours through the villages or to the Shire River and Majete Wildlife Reserve as well as excursions to Mulanje Mountain, Zomba Plateau, Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi.
Local communities Guests have an opportunity to visit Fisherman’s Rest Community Trust and engage with local communities in games, arts, crafts, carpentry, pottery and gardening. Even sports tournaments can be arranged. In addition, guests can join the Book Bus team in their mobile library safari truck – decorated with Quentin Blake illustrations – on school visits where they help children improve their reading skills through storytelling, illustrating and games. There is also an opportunity to help the schools build their own classrooms for libraries, set up computers and teach the skills that will give Malawian students quicker access to the world of technology and improve their employability.

Malawi national parks
National parks offer better-than-ever wildlife viewing thanks to conservation efforts Broadly speaking, Malawi is not perceived by the tourism industry as an out-and-out safari destination. In fact, Malawi sells itself more as an activity destination with lots to see and do. And with tough competition from its neighbours, this is probably just as well. Yet Malawi has a surprisingly varied offering in terms of game viewing. In fact, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) is responsible for looking after 12 ‘protected’ areas comprising five national parks, four wildlife reserves and three sanctuaries. Malawi has also been through some tough times in terms of wildlife protection and conservation and this has tended to limit the number of visitors to its parks and reserves. But thanks to one or two innovative ideas in relation to park management and a recognition by the government that the nation’s parks and reserves are important generators of income, wildlife is making a comeback. This upbeat assessment contrasts sharply with the sorry situation of the 1990s when poaching and issues of land use were a major problem. There is still much to be done, of course; but Malawi is generally moving in the right direction as it seeks to restore its parks to their former glory and as animal populations recover, both naturally and with the help of restocking and translocation. More rangers have been engaged,
16
DESTINATION MALAWI
highway links have been improved along with the road systems inside the parks and reserves, and there is better signposting. At the same time, investors have been encouraged to build new camps and lodges, often with local community involvement. What’s more, all Malawi’s parks and reserves except one remain astonishingly good value. With one exception, they charge daily fees of only $5 per person for nonresidents and as little as $1 for local people.
National parks: Nyika National Park, with Lake Malawi on one side and Zambia on the other, is the nation’s largest at 3,200 sq km. Nyika contains one of Africa’s finest examples of montane plateaux with high densities of leopard as well as zebra, roan, eland and reedbuck; while on the lower slope there are elephant and buffalo as well as warthog, bushpig and hyena. The park also contains about 200 species of orchid. Nyika is also popular with birdwatchers. It contains more than 400 species, including the rare Denham’s bustard, the wattled crane and the endemic red-winged francolin. Apart from conventional game-viewing and birdwatching, other activities within the park include trekking, mountain biking and horse riding.
The 2,316 sq km Kasungu National Park, again bordering Zambia, is Malawi’s second-largest. Unfortunately, animal densities are not high as poaching remains an issue here; but the park has roan, sable, kudu, impala and hartebeest plus some zebra and buffalo. Lucky visitors might get to see wild dog and serval. The park also contains hyena and large numbers of hippo in the Lufupa River. Many consider the 580 sq km Liwonde National Park to be the jewel of Malawi’s game-viewing areas; and it is certainly one of the most scenic, with the Shire River winding along its western border before flowing into Lake Malombe. The park has elephant, buffalo – which are thriving, according to the DNPW – and hippo as well as sable, impala, reedbuck, oribi and cats such as leopard and serval. There are also good opportunities to view such exotic bird species as Pel’s fishing owl, the palm nut vulture, Boehm’s bee-eater and the white-backed heron. The sometimes neglected Lengwe National Park, right on the Mozambique border, has suffered a great deal in the past from poaching and the ravages of the civil war

that afflicted Malawi’s neighbour. Lengwe is the most northerly habitat of the nyala. A few other antelope live there, but are harder to spot owing to the thick vegetation. The birdlife is abundant, however, and enthusiasts will be eager to see the black-and-white flycatcher, barred cuckoo and bush-shrike among many. Lake Malawi National Park, covering just 94 sq km, is Malawi’s smallest and also a Unesco World Heritage Site. The park occupies the Cape Maclear peninsula and was set up to protect the more than 1,000 fish species (many endemic) and other aquatic creatures in the lake.
Wildlife reserves: The 700 sq km Majete Wildlife Reserve is run by the African Parks Network, which has a 25-year public/private agreement with the government. On taking control, African Parks faced a situation in which the reserve’s entire population of elephant, buffalo, sable, eland, zebra and hartebeest had been wiped out and other animal numbers severely depleted. Since its inception, however, African Parks has reintroduced about 3,000 animals including black rhino and sable. This is the only park or reserve in Malawi that charges a different (and higher) entrance fee – still reasonable at US$20 for an adult non-resident. Furthermore, the quality and success of this project has attracted a top quality operator to build a new property in the reserve. There is also a campsite from which the community benefits in terms of revenue sharing. The hard-to-reach Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve, covering 340 sq km, has been a sorry victim of poaching and

deforestation in the past. This reserve is now in the hands of Project African Wilderness (PAW), which has a management agreement with DNPW to run the area. PAW has set about fencing the reserve and restocking it with game while also building Chipembere Camp. Sadly, the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve has suffered from neglect and animal sightings are now limited; but the DNPW is making efforts to upgrade it. Birdwatching, however, remains excellent. The 900 sq km Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve borders Zambia on its western side and is home to Malawi’s broadest variety of large mammals (elephant, hippo, kudu and impala). Unfortunately, sable are no longer found here, but there are many lowland bird species. The reserve has an open border with Zambia and poaching remains a problem, although a diminishing one. On the plus side, the reserve is fenced on its southern and eastern boundaries. This is another reserve earmarked by DNPW for improvement and restocking. Finally, there are three wildlife sanctuaries. In establishing three sanctuaries – in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu – the aim has been to create natural wildlife environments in urban areas in order to provide an opportunity for both local people and visitors to view and interact with animals and to provide education for schoolchildren.
antelope, baboon and crocodile. It is also a recreation and leisure facility, open to both local residents and international visitors. In addition, the centre features a series of wilderness trails that wind their way through the woodland and along the banks of the Lingadzi River. Home to a diverse range of trees and birds as well as animals such as porcupine, duiker and wild pig, these trails are perfect for walking – accompanied by a guide, if required – as well as for birdwatching and picnicking. Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a nongovernmental organisation, registered by Congoma (the Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi).
Golf
A modest but attractive challenge for lovers of golf Malawi may not be the world’s top golfing destination, but it has its fair share of courses. Players will find a selection of golf clubs in Malawi, some in quite beautiful locations. Among these, the leader is Lilongwe Golf Club, the country’s only 18-hole course and home to the TNM Malawi Open sponsored by Telekom Networks Malawi. Dating back to 1930, Lilongwe is a testing, par-72, 6,225 metre course. Together, its 18 holes constitute a tight and tricky course with many narrow tree-lined fairways The club is installing underground irrigation in an effort to improve the year-round playability of the fairways, which can suffer in the dry season, and is renovating the clubhouse.
Non-members pay a green fee and also a per-day membership fee of MWK 1,500 per person. At MWK 500 (plus a discretionary tip) for 18 holes and only MWK 300 for nine, caddies are refreshingly inexpensive.
COURSES In addition to Lilongwe, the country has eight other courses, but all of these are only nine holes. Six are in southern Malawi: Blantyre Sports Club (founded in 1896), Limbe Country Club, Mulanje Golf Course, Thyolo Golf Club and Nchalo Golf Club. One is in the central region at Kachere. And there are two in the north: Mzuzu Golf Club and Kasasa Golf Club. There is also a nine-hole, par-3, course at Mlambe, which belongs to the Club Makokola resort on Lake Malawi. Another nine hole course is being built at Mapiri Lodge.

Majete Wildlife Reserve is part of a public private partnership initiative between the government of Malawi and the African Parks Network – a conservation organisation that manages and restores protected areas in partnership with African governments.
About 130,000 people live in the vicinity of the reserve in more than 140 villages. Through its Community Development Section, the reserve works with the local communities and gives its support to projects such as boreholes, school classrooms, health clinics and drinking troughs for livestock.
Majete is in the Lower Shire Valley, part of the Great Rift Valley in southern Malawi. The habitat incorporates hill miombo woodland, mixed woodlands of combretum, terminalia and acacia, open rocky outcrops and thick riverine woodland. Over 2,000 animals have been relocated into a 14,000 hectare sanctuary within the reserve in the past five years including black rhino, elephant, buffalo, eland and sable. In 2009 the perimeter fence was complete and subsequent relocations have focused on the outer reserve, including over 80 elephants, moved from Mangochi by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) with funding from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. A further 500 animals – impala, sable and waterbuck – were moved into the outer reserve to complete the ‘plains game’ initiative. In 2011/2012 the final restocking phase
Accommodation in the reserve consists of Thawale Camp and the Community Camp Site.
TENTED CHALETS Thawale Camp is unfenced, so that animals regularly visit the property. The camp has five twin tented chalets and one luxury chalet. All chalets are en-suite with hot and cold running water. The chalets overlook a floodlit waterhole. The lounge area has a bar, a dining area and a terrace where guests can sit around the campfire. Fully catered meals are provided. The self-catering Community Campsite has a thatched bar and dining space, a barbecue area, toilets and hot showers.

Malawi Department of Tourism
Beautiful, compact and offering a perfect African experience Malawi, the ‘warm heart’ of Africa, offers a legendary welcome to all who wish to sample the delights of one of the most beautiful – and also the most compact – countries in Africa. The sheer variety of attractions is one of Malawi’s greatest assets. In addition to the majestic Lake Malawi, visitors have a wonderful choice of places to see and things to do thanks to an unrivalled combination of lakes, landscapes, wildlife and culture. Another of the country’s great assets is its people, renowned as some of the friendliest in the world. Every visitor is greeted with a smile and the warmth of the welcome is genuine and long-lasting. Many visitors to Malawi will want to include an element of cultural experience – and the
opportunity to meet and interact with local people is a stimulating feature of any stay.
Among the country’s many tourist attractions, the jewel in the crown is Lake Malawi, ‘discovered’ by Dr David Livingstone just over 150 years ago. This vast body of fresh water, fringed by beaches of golden sand, is a scenic wonderland offering great opportunities for water sports.
BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES Malawi offers visitors a huge diversity of beautiful landscapes in a relatively small area. Generally lush and green, it contains plateaux, highlands, forests, mountains, plains, escarpments and dramatic river valleys. The highest peaks reach 10,000 ft (3,000 metres) while the lowest point is barely above sea level. Many of the highland areas and forest reserves have good accommodation options as well as a wide availability of outdoor activities. Malawi is home to no fewer than nine national parks and wildlife reserves. While it lacks the sheer numbers of large mammals of some of its better-known neighbours, Malawi makes up for this in other ways by offering exclusive wildlife viewing in unspoilt areas of genuine wilderness.

As part of its route expansion, Air Malawi plans to develop its domestic network to include Kalonga, Mzuzu and Mangochi using a 30-seater aircraft. It is also exploring the possibility of flying to Likoma Island if this proves to be a valuable route. The airline prides itself on providing exceptional service and comfort for its passengers. This has led to repeat business with over 130,000 passengers a year. As part of its socially responsible pact, Air Malawi strives to do its bit for the environment. Air cargo Air Cargo Limited (ACL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Malawi established in 1979 primarily to handle cargo operations for the national carrier. Its main activity is a weekly freighter service between London and Lilongwe.
National Bank of Malawi
Outstanding services and products from ‘bank of the nation’ National Bank of Malawi has a mission to provide the best financial services in Malawi and the region, distinguished by outstanding service, product innovation and sustained earnings growth. The bank’s products and services include loan products, card services, electronic banking, SMS banking, customer accounts, asset finance, Treasury products and MoneyGram transfers. The history of banking in Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) can be traced to August 1894 when the African Lakes Corporation (ALC), a trading company, started the first banking operations in Blantyre. Other companies, unhappy with ALC’s handling of banking services, approached an independent bank in South Africa to operate in Blantyre. This suggestion was fortunate, as a decision had already been made by Standard Bank to move further north across the Zambezi. So Standard Bank opened its first branch in Blantyre in April 1901. In 1920 the bank had branches in Limbe, Zomba and Lilongwe.
National Bank of South Africa was established in Malawi in 1918 and took over the interests of ALC. This bank was taken over by Barclays Bank DCO in 1929.
Birth of National Bank National Bank of Malawi was created on 1 July 1971, with the government’s agreement, through an amalgamation between the Standard Bank and Barclays Bank. At that time, the two banks held 51 per cent of the equity, Press (Holding) Ltd held 29 per cent and Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation held 20 per cent. National Bank was listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange on 21 August 2000 with a total of 450,000,000 ordinary shares. The current shareholding structure of the bank is as follows: Press Corporation Ltd – 51.73 per cent; Old Mutual Group – 24.83 per cent; Public shareholding – 22.03 per cent; Employees – 1.41 per cent.
