elcome to the second edition of ‘This is Botswana’, the annual publication of the Hospitality & Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB). This second edition not only informs and promotes, but also provides an insight into an understanding of our beautiful yet sparsely populated nation. Moreover, the publication acts as a showcase for HATAB’s growing membership in an industry that is

making an ever-increasing contribution to the national economy. In fact, our members form the backbone of Botswana’s tourism sector and are engaged in a diverse range of activities, providing visitors with the kind of quality accommodation and first-class services that will ensure we remain Africa’s foremost high-end destination.

well established Our upmarket wildlife and safari products are well established and have set the benchmark for others to meet. And it’s true to say that the popular Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Park and Central Kalahari Game Reserve remain among the best presented and best run game parks in the region.

Gaborone is clearly one of southern Africa’s leading conference and exhibition centres. The city offers top-notch accommodation, a safe and secure environment and a wide choice of exhibition venues. Finally, I should mention ‘The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’. Set in Gaborone, this sympathetically shot, made-for-TV adaptation of the best-selling Alexander McCall Smith novel, and the series that is to follow, will undoubtedly attract a new and altogether different type of visitor to our beloved Botswana. They will not be disappointed.

t is generally acknowledged that, since the mid 1960s, Botswana has enjoyed the world’s fastest growing economy – even faster than the oil-rich Gulf States. This phenomenal success is based largely on revenue from diamond exports, but more and more income is also being generated by inbound tourism. This long and uninterrupted period of economic growth has transformed a poor, sparsely populated country into Africa’s most prosperous state. Growing income levels and good governance have combined to provide a solid infrastructure with roads, schools and hospitals that would be

the envy of many other states, not only in Africa but also beyond. Today, Botswana is justly proud of its well maintained infrastructure, its first-class health care provision and its excellent education system.

diamonds Yet diamonds do not tell the whole story. Many other African countries have diamonds, but unfortunately they do not enjoy the same high standard of living, political stability and inter-ethnic harmony as Botswana.

For visitors, this means peace of mind in terms of emergency health care provision as well as the ability to move around the country efficiently and without hindrance from petty bureaucracy or any security concerns. The vast majority of visitors arrive in Botswana via the two northern wildlife gateways of Maun and Kasane. Maun is a natural springboard for the nearby expanses of the Okavango Delta and for mobile safaris heading for the Kalahari and elsewhere, while Kasane is the main centre for trips to Chobe National Park (via the Sedudu Gate) and for those heading

across the border to Zambia to see the Victoria Falls. Maun is very much a frontier town – albeit a rather pleasant and agreeable one. The town has regular flights to Gaborone and Johannesburg and is very much at the heart of Botswana’s safari sector. From Maun airport, a fleet of small aircraft is on hand to fly guests directly into camps and lodges throughout the Okavango and beyond. Kasane, meanwhile, has mushroomed from a somewhat remote and unremarkable little village into a bustling crossroads for those travelling in northern Botswana and is the unique meeting point of four national frontiers. In this way, Zambia is reached via the Kazungula ferry across the Zambezi only about 6 km away. The

border with Zimbabwe is also nearby, and so is the extreme tip of Namibia’s Caprivi Strip.

adventure Aside from Botswana’s more obvious wildlife and adventure-related tourism, the capital, Gaborone, is a key venue for conferences and exhibitions – an important and growing market for the city. Today, Gaborone is a city dominated by gleaming office towers, dotted here and there with fancy hotels and smart new shopping malls and crisscrossed by broad uncongested highways. Yet Gaborone has lost none of its laid-back charm and unhurried way of life. Not far from the city there are opportunities for game viewing and visits to places of interest such as the National Museum.

In essence, Botswana has all the right ingredients to make it Africa’s top destination. Botswana has the quality and variety of accommodation, the wildlife, the unique natural phenomena, the roads, airports, the security and the people to offer a product which, in overall terms, cannot be matched in Africa.

OTSWANA’S capital city, Gaborone, is said to be the fastest growing in Africa. Yet, with a population of about 200,000, it still has the delightfully laid-back, easygoing atmosphere of a medium-sized country town. For many visitors to Botswana, heading for the wildlife parks in the centre and north of the country, Gaborone is either a stepping stone to somewhere else or a place to be by-passed altogether. Yet Gaborone has its own attractions as well as being an important venue for conferences and exhibitions. And, of course, it is the commercial centre of the nation. The comparative modernity of Gaborone and its expanding glass-fronted skyline do nothing to hide the city’s heritage or its thriving cultural life, much of which is now centred on Gaborone Village. The Village contains the new seven-hectare National Botanical Garden. Gaborone Village also boasts historical buildings such as the Old Gaberones Hotel and a 100-year-old prison.

There is also the Three Chiefs monument, built close to the Central Business District to commemorate the achievement of Chiefs Khama, Sebele and Bathoen. It was in 1895 that these three leaders, supported by the London Missionary Society, travelled to England to plead with the government not to incorporate Bechuanaland (as Botswana was then known) into the Republic of South Africa. Hearing their concerns, the government agreed to allow Bechuanaland to be a British protectorate rather than a colony. Visitors can also take the official ‘No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ tour and see main locations used in the TV film. The tour includes a trip to Mochudi, about 45 minutes from Gaborone. Also just outside Gaborone are the Odi and Mochudi craft villages. The main attraction in Odi is the Lentswe-la-Odi weavers’ co-operative, which has gained a reputation with its modern designs. In Mochudi there are traditional crafts including hand-made jewellery and a tin workshop.

Visitors can also go on a mini wildlife safari right on the city’s doorstep at the 600 hectare Gaborone Game Reserve, the privately run 3,000 hectare Mokolodi Nature Reserve, with its stock of white rhino, and the St Clair Lion Park. Gaborone is far from the sea, but this apparent handicap is easily overcome by the attractions at Gaborone Dam. Surrounded by tall hills and game-filled woodland, the city’s main water supply offers sailing, windsurfing, fishing and other activities. Drinks, snacks and Sunday lunch are available at the yacht club. There are also picnic sites and a children’s playground.

aborone is without doubt one of southern Africa’s most popular conference and exhibition venues – one that is set to grow further as new facilities and capacity come on stream. The local market is dominated by two players: the Botswana Conference & Exhibition Centre (BCEC), operated by Fairground Holdings – a company owned jointly by the Botswana Development Corporation and the government; and the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). The BCEC was originally set up by the government in the 1980s to run the annual Botswana International Trade Fair. But as the

fair was held only once a year, it was decided to use the BCEC as a conference venue. Today, the BCEC caters for larger numbers than any other conference venue in Botswana. Its centrepiece is a fully air conditioned, multipurpose exhibition hall

Fairground Holdings wants BCEC to be Botswana’s premier venue for meetings and conferences and to provide even bigger and better facilities to its clients.

covering 5,000 square metres. The hall can seat up to 15,000 people in cinema style and is ideal for concerts, major religious meetings, large conferences and examination sittings. There is a second conference hall covering nearly 3,000 square metres along with meeting rooms for between two and 100 people.

refurbishment Fairground Holdings is working on a US$3 million plus refurbishment programme for BCEC that is due to start in mid 2008.

At the same time, Fairground Holdings intends to build a new three-star, 150-room hotel alongside the exhibition centre, due for completion in the second half of 2009. This project is being undertaken in partnership with a property development company. One of the site’s big selling points is its car park, with space for 400 vehicles. This will be enlarged once the new hotel opens. Located 12 km from the airport, GICC comprises a major exhibition and conference venue, with capacity for up to 1,800 delegates in theatre style, plus a series of halls

and suites to meet every requirement. The GICC forms part of the Grand Palm complex. Associated with the GICC are the 149room select services Metcourt Inn and the 186-room Walmont Ambassador hotel. More accommodation is available at the Mondior Summit hotel in the city centre.

dance during the dry season. Owing to its location close to the Victoria Falls and the ‘frontier’ town of Kasane, this area attracts many visitors.

The park is divided into four eco systems:

• The Savuti Marsh in the west is a relic of an ancient lake. Savuti is often considered one of the best all-season game viewing areas in Africa.

• The popular Serondela area of the park features lush plains and dense teak forests close to the Chobe River in the extreme north-east and attracts animals in abun-

• The Linyanti Swamps in the north-west, located alongside the Linyanti River, feature riverine woodland as well as lagoons and floodplains. The swamps are excellent for game viewing and there is also a strong emphasis on bird-watching. • The hot, dry hinterland between the three is mostly covered in nogatsaa grass woodland. Although rarely visited, it is a good place for viewing eland. All major species can be found in the park: giraffe, elephant, zebra, impala, tsessebe, roan, sable, wildebeest, kudu, buffalo, waterbuck, warthog, eland and predators such as lion, hyena and jackal as well as the less common cheetah and wild dog.

In particular, Chobe National Park as a whole is famed for its abundant, but migratory, elephant population, thought to number about 120,000. The elephants move as far as 200 km from their dry season habitat around the Chobe and Linyanti rivers to the open pans in the south-east of the park, where they disperse during and just after the rains.

aybe it’s by accident rather than by design, but Botswana is starting to find itself almost as well known as the fictional setting for ‘The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ as it is for its wildlife. In 2008 the first of the nine novels written by Alexander McCall Smith became a film for television, bringing to a fresh international audience the gentle and humorous everyday life of Botswana’s top (and so far

only) female sleuth and occasional sage, Mma Precious Ramotswe. The fictional haunts inhabited by Mma Ramotswe and the other leading characters – Mma Grace Makutsi and J.L.B. Maketoni – of Zebra Drive and Speedy Motors are drawing visitors to Gaborone and have raised the city’s profile outside southern Africa.

leading characters The novels, with titles such as ‘In the Company of Cheerful Ladies’, ‘The Kalahari Typing School for Men’ and ‘The Good Husband of Zebra Drive’, are as much commentaries on the adventures and mild idiosyncrasies of the leading characters as they are detective stories. The new TV series is a joint production by the BBC and HBO and the pilot

programme in early 2008 will be followed by a series of 13 episodes. The pilot was written by Richard Curtis and directed by the late Anthony Minghella.

f you want to play golf in Botswana, you have only two real choices – the Phakalane Golf Estate, just outside Gaborone, and the Gaborone Golf Club, located next to the Gaborone Sun Hotel. Yet, if you count the existing sand course in Francistown, the nine-hole course in Kasane and an assortment of others in Lobatse, Jwaneng, Selibe Phikwe, Sowa and Orapa, then there are six others from which to choose but some of these are of variable quality.

Looking to the future of Botswana as a southern Africa golf destination, Three Cities is set to add a 36-room, four-star hotel to the facilities and accommodation already available at the course. Three Cities manages three other similar golf resorts in South Africa. Phakalane already attracts golfing groups out of South Africa, but for the most part the golf estate caters for the local market, also offering conference and banqueting facilities.

promises to be a fabulous new golf estate in Francistown. Phase one calls for a ninehole course, a clubhouse, a hotel and plots for new housing. It is hoped that the new course will be ready to play by the end of 2009 and discussions are under way that could lead to it becoming the new home for the Francistown Golf Club.

TRADITIONAL mostly open and treeless, it is a challenging test for all golfers. Players can either hire karts or walk. Green fees are about US$20 per round at weekends, with karts costing US$30 for the day – something of a necessity when temperatures can be in the forties Centigrade. Caddies cost a very reasonable US$12. Weekday rates are lower.

Meanwhile, close to the city centre, Gaborone Golf Club is a traditional members’ club totalling 6,206 metres off the competition tees and provides easy access for those working or living in the city The course is a par 71 for men and a par 72 for women. otswana may be the world’s largest diamond producer by value, but until now few of these precious gems have been available for sale in Gaborone or Maun. The reason is that, while Botswana produces about 25 per cent of the world’s rough diamonds, these have traditionally been exported to Europe and elsewhere for cutting and polishing and rarely find their way back home unless they are set in the ring of a tourist. But the prospect of more local diamonds being on sale to tourists came closer to reality in 2008 when Debswana, a joint

venture between the government of Botswana and De Beers, opened a US$ 83 million diamond processing plant in Gaborone with an annual capacity of 45 million carats.

JOINT Venture Like Debswana, Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) is a joint venture between De Beers and the Botswana government. DTCB will carry out local sales and marketing initiatives as well as cutting and polishing diamonds within Botswana. These diamonds will be both local and from those ‘aggregated’ from around the world in Gaborone – an activity previously undertaken in London.

Debswana is the world’s leading diamond producer by value and has played a significant role in the transformation of Botswana’s economy over the past 42 years. It is the largest non-government employer and the largest earner of foreign exchange in Botswana. About 75 per cent of the nation’s income is from diamonds, which represent about 50 per cent of state revenues and about 30 per cent of gross domestic product. Diamonds were only until now really available locally from the Schachter & Namdar factory in Molepolole.

nlike many others of its type around the world, the Botswana National Museum is anything but a dull and worthy representation of a nation’s history. In fact, the museum, which marks its 40th anniversary in 2008, is at the forefront of the nation’s cultural and artistic life, drawing some 45,000 visitors each year. These include children from local schools, students engaged in research and, of course, tourists visiting Gaborone.

Each year, the National Museum plays host to five major exhibitions, each lasting a month and featuring local artists. The museum also organises craft exhibitions, encourages local artists and hosts exhibitions on topics such as HIV/AIDS.

The museum’s biggest event takes place in July and August when its main gallery is used for the National Basket & Craft Exhibition, which provides a showcase for basketry, beadwork, leatherwork, pottery, textiles and woodcarving. This is the world’s second-largest basket exhibition and the baskets are widely considered to be the best of their kind anywhere. Individual baskets can sell for as much as US$2,500 in the United States.

it is for artists, so the museum plays a less active role in terms of providing subsidies – although the absence of royalties or copyright protection is a major issue. In another departure from the norm, the museum has been lobbying the government for musicians to be given more support and recognition. At the same time, the museum has been supporting an initiative to have the 22 July President’s Day celebrations extended and declared part of a cultural and heritage month.

Mystical Rock ART like no other T

sodilo Hills, in the far north-west of Botswana and about 50 km from the village of Sepupa, provide one of the world’s best examples of primitive rock paintings. What’s more, this is Botswana’s only Unesco World Heritage Site and the earliest evidence of man’s existence in the country. Archaeologists believe the San people have occupied the area around the Tsodilo Hills for perhaps 100,000 years. The San consider the hills sacred and a resting place for spirits. However, the oldest rock paintings

date from about 3,000 years ago and the best examples are only between 800 and 1,300 years old – but no less impressive for their comparative modernity.

Concentration It is estimated that, within the nine square kilometres that make up the Tsodilo Hills, there are some 4,500 rock paintings. This is thought to be the highest concentration of rock art anywhere in the world. The remoteness of the Tsodilo Hills is also unusual. The nearest other similar rock art site is about 250 km away from Tsodilo Hills. Emphasising its isolation is the fact that the style of rock art – with many solitary human figures and, for some reason, a preponderance of eland – is unlike any other in southern Africa. The best-known collection of paintings is the so-called Van der Post Panel, named after the legendary explorer Sir Laurens

van der Post, who originally drew attention to the archaeological significance of the Tsodilo Hills in his seminal book, ‘The Lost World of the Kalahari’. Access to the paintings is easy because the hills, which rise to 410 metres above the surrounding bushveld, can be reached by way of footpaths and reasonably shallow climbs. Visitors are advised to view in the early morning or late afternoon, however, because of the often high temperatures.

he Okavango Delta is Botswana’s best known and most visited tourist attraction. The Delta is generally reached via the gateway town of Maun, in the north of the country.

after the rainy season, the Delta irrigates about 15,000 sq km of otherwise arid desert. However, the high temperatures of the Kalahari ensure that this excess water quickly evaporates.

The Delta, which once formed part of Lake Makgadikgadi, has no outlet to the sea and therefore is forced to empty into the Kalahari Desert. It is the world’s biggest inland delta. Each year, during and shortly

This seasonal flooding commences during the southern hemisphere midsummer in the north and ends about six months later in the south of the Delta. This results in water rising in the north as it recedes in the south in summer, and rising in the south as it recedes in the north in winter. The nature of the annual flooding is benign, with floodplains and islands disappearing under the rising water and then reappearing in an ever-changing landscape at the end of each season. Depending on the season, the Okavango hosts a wide variety of game: elephant, buffalo, rhino (black and white) and hippo

as well as the big cats (lion, cheetah and leopard) and other predators such as hyenas and wild dogs. The Delta is also home to over 400 species of birds. The Moremi Game Reserve, which makes up about a quarter of the Delta’s total land area, forms a contiguous area with the Chobe National Park (see separate story) and is a mix of wetland and desert.

he Kalahari desert covers 900,000 sq km and spreads across seven countries in southern Africa. By far the largest part of this desert lies within Botswana, where it occupies about 70 per cent of the nation’s total land area. Its name derives from the Tswana word Kgalagadi, meaning ‘great thirst’. In fact, it is more semi-desert than desert: the Kalahari is surprisingly green because most of the desert receives some rain each year. At times the landscape is covered with flowers and grass and even tracts of

woodland. After rain, its comparative lushness attracts a variety of animals including lions, several species of antelope and the ubiquitous meerkat.

Game Reserv es The Kalahari contains three main game reserves: the giant 52,800 sq km Central Kalahari Game Reserve (the world’s second largest protected area); the 2,500 sq km Khutse Game Reserve; and the 38,000 sq km Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, of which 28,400 sq km is in Botswana and the remainder in South Africa. The San people have lived in the Kalahari for 20,000 years as hunter-gatherers and, despite Botswana’s economic success, many still maintain a way of life largely unchanged over many centuries. The Kalahari is one of Africa’s last great wildernesses and fixed accommodation is

in short supply. To get around this lack of lodgings and to ensure that the Kalahari remains unspoiled, many local companies offer mobile safaris that allow visitors access to even the most remote corners of the desert. Most of these either start in Maun or require an onward flight from Maun to a place such as Nata, a small village on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans.

oger Dugmore is one of Botswana’s most highly qualified professional guides. The son of a former Great White Hunter who travelled widely through Africa, wilderness is a part of life for him - indeed, when he first arrived in Maun almost 40 years ago, trips to school by boat usually involved dodging hippos and crocodiles, and lions and elephants were still a common sight in the small frontier town.

Roger has been conducting photographic safaris since 1989 and his passion, knowledge, and experience of wild areas translate into an unforgettable adventure in some of the most beautiful parts of Botswana. His personal interests lie in photography and videography, and his photographs have been exhibited in Botswana’s National Museums. He has assisted film crews in the making of documentaries, including ‘Aspects of Life’ and ‘The Last Edens’ featuring the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert.

Discovery Roger’s philosophy is that every safari is a journey of discovery, where each sunrise marks the beginning of another day of adventure. He is uniquely qualified to take visitors to wild and untamed areas in absolute comfort, including three-course

meals, hot showers, cold drinks, and gives personal attention to ensure satisfaction and enjoyment. He prides himself on the number of guests that return each year, once again eager to experience adventure. He also tells some pretty good tall tales around the campfire.

Cresta is easily Botswana’s largest hotel group in terms of bed capacity and is certainly the most broadly spread when it comes to locations.

The central location of the 90-room Cresta President Hotel is perfect for those visiting Gaborone on business or to attend a trade show, conference or seminar. Most government ministries are just a short walk from the hotel. Its Terrace Restaurant seats up to 140 guests and offers a full menu throughout the day.

ix properties, all located in very different areas of Botswana, are owned and operated by Desert & Delta Safaris. Each property is managed by a team of dedicated professionals with many years’ experience. The Desert & Delta philosophy is to provide guests with the best possible safari experience through ownership of some of Botswana’s finest locations and properties: • Camp Moremi, situated on the Xakanaxa Lagoon within the Moremi Game Reserve. • Chobe Game Lodge, as its name suggests, is set within the confines of Chobe National Park.

• The Savute Safari Lodge offers individually designed suites that set the property apart from more typical safari-type accommodation. • Camp Okavango has been built on remote Nxaragha Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta and caters for those who demand the ultimate in exclusivity. • Xugana Island Lodge – also in the Delta – is one of Africa’s finest wildlife and wilderness sanctuaries. • Leroo La Tau – A luxurious timber and thatch lodge overlooking the Makgadikgadi National Park. Opening June 2008.

Fully integrated Part of the fun of visiting the various Desert & Delta lodges and camps is actually moving between them. A fully integrated private air charter service is provided by the air charter subsidiary, Safari Air, which operates single-engined Cessna 206, Airvans, twin engine Islanders and

turbine Cessna Caravans. Many of the lodges have their own private airstrips. From the camps and lodges, Desert & Delta operates either seven-seat Toyota Landcruisers or nine-seat Land Rovers. Each vehicle has a removable canvas roof to provide shade and ample storage space for cameras, binoculars, etc. The Land Rovers at Chobe Game Lodge are equipped with 12-volt power points for guests’ cam recorders.

Wilder n ess Safar is

Pr istin e a n d r em ot e W

ilderness Safaris was established in 1983 as an ecotourism company that specialises in memorable wildlife experiences in some of the most remote and pristine areas in southern Africa, while remaining fiercely committed to protecting the planet’s precious natural and cultural resources. It shares these special places with guests from all over the world by operating camps and safaris in Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Seychelles.

The company offers wildlife, marine and heritage safaris in remote and pristine wilderness destinations, which are specialised, educational, explorative and fun. Its ‘conservation through responsible tourism’

32

policy shares the benefits of tourism with local communities and ensures the protection of these areas for future generations.

UNTO UCHED The reserves and concessions that Wilderness Safaris manages cover some of Africa’s most impressive and untouched wildlife experiences. It operates privately on nearly 3 million hectares of southern Africa’s best wildlife and wilderness reserves in some 54 lodges and camps. Wilderness Safaris offers over 4,000 hectares per bed of private land, creating a sense of privacy, exclusivity and space that makes its operation unique. Wilderness Safaris provides memorable wildlife experiences in Botswana’s most beautiful areas: the Okavango Delta, Linyanti and the Selinda. In these areas it operates in several private concessions, where its varied activities include game drives and night drives by vehicle as well as wildlife viewing by boat and dugout canoe (mokoro), which are ideal ways to see the

water areas. Walks are unsurpassed for being in touch with nature, while hides offer a great way to enjoy wildlife viewing and birding, especially during those midday siesta hours. Wilderness Safaris is dedicated to responsible tourism in southern Africa, striving to ensure the protection of Africa’s spectacular natural heritage while sharing the benefits with its people. It was a finalist in the World Travel & Tourism Council’s 2007 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, which recognise the world’s leading examples of best practice in responsible tourism development. www.wilderness-safaris.com

Bot swana Development Corporation

At t h e foref ront o f t h e N at i on ’ s d e v elopment B

otswana Development Corporation Ltd (BDC) was established in 1970 and is wholly owned by the Government of Botswana. Since inception, BDC’s has aimed to be the country’s main agency for commercial and industrial development by providing financial assistance to investors (both local and foreign) with viable projects. Another core objective is to support projects that generate sustainable employment for Batswana and for those that add to the skills of the local workforce. BDC also seeks to encourage citizen participation in business ventures. Additionally, BDC will consider giving its support to a project if it:

• Fosters close links with local industry. • Contributes to the development of Botswana’s existing resources and overall economic development. Generally and despite these objectives, BDC does not wish to be a majority stakeholder but may bear the major burden of any development project if it’s in the national interest. This is particularly true in terms of development finance where BDC has been instrumental in the sustained growth of the property market, through its 100% owned properties, and partnerships. The Property Division’s mandate is developing and managing hotel, residential, commercial and industrial properties for BDC.

• Uses locally available resources. • Produces products for export or substitutes imports.

34

The division also monitors a portfolio of property development loan facilities held with subsidiary, affiliate and non-affiliate

companies, through partnerships or joint venture developments.

strategy The strategy is aimed at developing new businesses that are commercially viable, and sustainable. It must also contribute to the growth and economic diversification of Botswana. With a mandate of developing manufacturing, the Industry Division has a key role to play in the diversification of the economy. BDC’s Agribusiness Division’s role is to help grow the local agricultural sector. There is strong emphasis on this particular sector as Botswana is keen that locally grown foodstuffs should reduce the country’s reliance on imports. Furthermore and given the slow rates of return from, and highrisk nature of, agribusiness projects, BDC’s involvement is crucial in this sector.

Botswana Tourism Board

he Botswana Tourism Board was established by an Act of Parliament with a mandate to market Botswana as a tourist destination of choice; promote investment in the tourism sector, and grade and classify tourism accommodation facilities. The Botswana Tourism Board has overseas representation in Germany, and is the driving force behind Botswana’s high profile presence at major international travel trade shows.

The Botswana Tourism Board surely has an amazing product to market: Botswana – A land of: • Unspoilt wilderness • Unlimited wildlife • The largest inland delta - The Okavango Delta • The Kalahari • The ancient super-lake - The Makgadikgadi Pans • An aviary of birdlife • Ancient discoveries - a rich cultural history • The mystical Tsodilo Hills • Enviable infrastructure • Peace and quiet

PEACE AN D TRANQUI LLITY Botswana is a country best known for peace and tranquillity, its diamonds (the country is the world’s largest exporter by value), its phenomenal game viewing and wilderness areas and its excellent quality

beef. In all of Africa, Botswana stands out as a beacon of democracy and the rule of law. Botswana has succeeded in the tourism sector (as in other sectors and activities), by operating an open approach to foreign investment, while also encouraging nationals to participate in the development of new tourism products and services. This has enabled Botswana to benefit from a growing and highly successful tourism industry that has maintained a reputation at the premium end of the market while ensuring that fragile eco-systems in the pristine Okavango Delta and the Kalahari remain unspoilt for the enjoyment of future generations.

T&T Monnakgotla is a 100 per cent Motswana-owned company with interests in passenger transport, insurance, travel and tourism. The company started business in 2000 by launching two much-needed regular bus services between Gaborone and Palapye and between Gaborone and Hukuntsi.

The company’s policy of operating only new 65-seater buses has brought a high level of reliability, comfort and sophistication to the two routes. Since then, the company has underlined its success by investing in new vehicles, acquiring about 15 buses – both Scania and Mercedes Sprinter units – between 2003 and 2006.

diver sified In 2003, the company diversified into the insurance sector. This decision was taken in order to reduce costs on its own fleet of vehicles. The company now offers motor, travel and household policies and has since graduated from agent to broker. In 2004 a Travel & Tours Division was added to the group, allowing the company to make better even use of its bus fleet. The company became a member

of HATAB in 2005 and now offers airline agency services including a shuttle service to and from Gaborone’s Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. Car rentals and tour packages can be arranged for customers when needed.

This area is outside of the national parks and game reserves, with no crowds, no fences, where the animals roam as they have for thousands of years.

con cession areas Kwando Safaris operates two ‘concession’ areas in Botswana. One is in the permanent water of the Okavango Delta, but this doesn’t mean guests are limited to water activities. This concession is adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve, so provides the best of both worlds. The other concession is in the far north of Botswana in an area

renowned for its large herds of elephants and frequent predator sightings. Kwando operates its four camps all year round – Kwara and Little Kwara in the Okavango Delta and Lebala and Lagoon camps in the Kwando River Concession (in the far north of Botswana).

absorb ing The fascinating and absorbing Kwando Safaris circuit is one of the best available for the discerning visitor to Africa. The style is intimate, private and personal, with the company and the staff going out of their way to treat every guest as though they are a member of the ‘Kwando Family’. Recommended circuits include at least two nights at either of the camps in the Okavango Delta – Kwara or Little Kwara, a couple of nights at Lebala Camp on the edge of the Linyanti marsh – a favourite spot for predators, two nights at Lagoon camp on the edge of a permanent lagoon

(about three hours from Lebala Camps) and finishing with a few nights at the delightful Songwe Village – situated on the edge of a gorge in Zambia and close to the Victoria Falls – where guests can participate in all the wonderful activities that the Victoria Falls has to offer.
