Happy 4th Anniversary! elcome to our 48th edition of Landscape magazine! It’s with great triumph that we celebrate our 4th year. This would not have been possible without our global team of contributors and our in-house staff whose efforts have made Landscape the voice of the industry. With this issue we reaffirm our commitment to remain a strong and recognized forum for the landscape professionals in the Middle East, a pledge we took on the first issue of Landscape four years ago. The promotion of the work and people behind the landscaping projects in the Middle East that is redefining and shaping our cities is as relevant as ever. As with this ever changing profession, we too have grown and reshaped as seen by our new template for the magazine and website. This further enhances our pledge to cover the latest innovations in the industry, not just in our region, but globally. We are fortunate to be an integral part of an industry that was in its infancy only a decade ago, but as a direct result of the creative abilities and sheer hard work of the region’s landscape architects and planners, has established itself alongside the US and EU models. To ensure that we too are constantly evolving for our readers, our June issue and every issue after will have a short synopsis of our main articles in Arabic. Our own transformation is testament to our contributors, advertisers, and most importantly our readers, whose notes of encouragements and feedback have aided us in improving issue by issue so we can deliver a publication worthy of this profession.

Speakers at the event included; Nasser Turk and Alyaa Al Saabri from Abu Dhabi Municipality, Geoff Sanderson from GCLA, StevenVelegrinis from Woods Bagot, Ayad Al Rawi, Duncan Denley, and Madeline Barlow from Cracknell, and Dr. Mario Rossi from Ambient Studio. Speaking to Landscape after the event, Steven Velegrinis who spoke about “Landscape Urbanism: How Landscape Architects just might save the world” said that his presentation emphasized the need for landscape architects to be active in urban planning that responds to the landscape. Mr Velegrinis said that the event was quite successful considering it was not promoted to the industry at all. “If nothing else it brought together a group of people from the industry that have similar ideologies and a similar belief in the future of the Gulf Landscape Architecture scene.

He added: “We have suggested to ADU that we get together as an industry panel to provide ongoing input into the program. We all feel that there hasn’t been enough done to promote the program in the region and locally but I think with some support from the magazine they could do a lot better at attracting students.” “It is typical that a program, which is new in the region and a discipline that is not well understood generally struggles in its first years. Given the importance of social media nowadays for school age kids, I think that there needs to be a concerted effort at marketing the program (and the discipline) virally.” Woods Bagot are taking on the winner of the student competition as an intern this summer, where she will work in the Landscape Studio for three months. “I think that is some indication that we believe in the intentions and the future of the program,” Velegrinis added.

“In order to maintain the longevity of the course, it is imperative that the University employs highly qualified academics such as landscape architects, ecologists and landscape engineers so they can develop a landscape school comparable to the world’s best,” he said. Mr Sanderson said that the university must aim for accreditation from the International Federation of Landscape Architects and seek support from other country’s landscape institutes to help guide the course development. “Once established, the university must make it their goal to promote and establish a UAE Institute of Landscape Architects, which would be run by Emiratis. It’s exciting times for the industry in the region and I’m delighted to be able to assist the students,” he concluded. Dr. Mario Rossi’s presentation was about the Biomimichicry and Inspiration from Nature in

Echoing the comments was GCLA principal Geoff Sanderson; “our company like others has been seeking Emirati landscape architects for a long time without success. It is vitally important that undergraduates understand their own country and its culture to such a deep level that they are able to shape a landscape philosophy that truly belongs here and is not simply a reproduction of a global theme.” Abu Dhabi University is offering students the opportunity to study the profession on their home soil, which is a blessing for the region’s landscaping industry according to Sanderson. “Although the course is at a very early stage, it is still admirable to see the standard of work the students have produced and their positive attitude to their chosen profession.

landscape design. Madeline Barlow, HR Manager, Ayad Al Rawi, and Duncan Denley Associates at Cracknell prepared a presentation entitled, Landscape Architecture - in context: A look at the profession of landscape architecture, its value, where it fits within the construction industry concluding with a real life case study. The presentation included three key sections: the first being a look at the value landscape architecture brings to people all over the world and some of the common perceptions of landscape architecture and comparisons with other disciplines within the construction industry. It was to highlight to the audience, especially the students that landscape architecture plays a major role in shaping the environment we live in. From residential to mixed-use developments, to urban planning, landscape architecture plays a substantial role. There is no doubt that the profession has a long way to go in the region to promote itself and the benefits it can provide which is one of the reasons for the seminar in the first instance. The new generation of landscape architects are key to increasing awareness and development of landscape architecture and even more so those who are from the region and educated right here in the UAE. The second section was a breakdown of the typical design stages within a landscape design project, team structure and tips on how to ensure a multi disciplinary project is properly coordinated. The intention here was to give the students an idea of how a typical project team is set up, run and coordinated with other design disciplines. It was important for

them to stress that to create a successful design a coordinated approach between all disciplines is essential. With students from the architecture and interior design course present, the opportunity was there to highlight the importance of working hand in hand as oppose to having the “us and them mentality.

The final section was a brief overview of a case study project designed by Cracknell and a look at the design process from inception through to site supervision of the construction. The aim of this was to inspire the students by showing a real life project. The hope was that showing how initial conceptual design drawings are converted to a complete functioning development, especially

one on the scale of Dubai Festival City it would highlight the satisfaction gained from designing a space and seeing it realized and then used by people every day. The exhibition was an important initiative lead by the Abu Dhabi University and we hope this will be an annual event.

the environmental and eco friendly image that MOMO fire conveys lies in their bio fuel-ethanol: “It comes from the plant (cereal grain and sugar cane) and burns without smoke and smell. No electricity, no installation is required in terms of extraction, no need to worry about a chimney or any kind of heavy duty”. He added: “The design of the fireplace gives the impression of heat but we are not selling heat, we are selling design to create a warm, cozy and friendly atmosphere. It is real fire, so obviously there is a bit of heat, but it won’t change in any case the temperature of a room, compared to gas or a wood fireplace”. “In contrast to normal fires, our products are portable and easily moveable. specific maintenance is required and our products are all made from durable materials with international safety certifications.” “Fireline is our latest Architect line product, a real piece of art, which yields our best sales. It’s the one offering the largest possibilities for custom jobs. This charming and esthetic ribbon of fire can be flame adjustable, and is equipped with sensors that advise on the heat, CO² and the remaining fuel in the tank. The Fireline can be either delivered manually operated or fully automatic. Linked to Smart home systems, it is the latest toy for end users who can start fires from their Ipad, and an easy use for the hospitality industry with automatic timer”. Jeremy explained: “Architects can use our products to include fire into any existent design or create tailor-made models with a large choice of materials such as stone, marble, stainless, MDF leather, gold flakes and even Swarovski crystals. Most of the projects are handled straight by the consultant and we are providing all product specifications and revised drawings, to ensure a quality follow-up from design to hand-over of the project. We would like the professional industry to know we work on commission basis allowing them an easy profit growth!” All products are coming from Europe and MOMO fire has a permanent stock in Dubai, ready to be delivered anytime, anywhere in the region. Well settled in the UAE and having secured official distribution in Saudi Arabia, contracts in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuweit, Iran… MOMO fire is all over the region. Projects The garden of the new terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport, the new major international hub of the Middle East serving Makkah, will rise as a sub- tropical microcosmos in the middle of the extremely dry desert.

n order to relate the garden to the big landscapes of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia we decided to create a garden with a topography, which recalls that of the never-ending sand dunes. The project creates the illusion of a garden grown out of a dune, which was there long time before the arrival of the new terminal. Sand dunes are one of the major components of the landscapes of the Kingdom so the choice of a dune shaped topography has a strong symbolical message. The organic shapes of the surface of the center garden will continue outside of the terminal building at the entrance area to assure continuity and coherency. The plinth of the garden will appear as if it would be a monolithic sandstone sculpted by the force of the wind, as if the ever moving sand dune would all of a sudden petrify to become support for a lush green subtropical vegetation. The organic and vegetal aspect of the surface will hold an architectural dialog with the high tech aspect off the walls. The idea is to create a duality ‘recto’ [vegetal, organic, natural] ‘verso’ [architecture, hightech, artificial] with the down side

Abstraction of organic forms into simple geometrical patterns, are one of the methods Islamic arts have used for centuries to represent nature. The topography of the garden of the new terminal of KAIA will be inspired from the silhouette of an imaginary sand dune but its surface will be covered with a carpet of lush green vegetation. To reinforce the identity of the garden its surface

18

will be covered with a sigmoid grid formed by diamond shaped concrete elements. Even though there’s plenty of grey water for the irrigation the creation of a garden on the extremely dry climate of Jeddah remains delicate. The new garden will propose a lush green subtropical aspect but will only host species with relatively low water consumption. All the plants will arrive from Saudi Arabia or from dry regions where the weather conditions are similar to Jeddah. One of the major components of the higher layer of the tree crowns will be the date palm, an inseparable symbol of the landscapes of Saudi Arabia. Just one of the many species that can withstand the long dry seasons. While, some of the plants incorporated in the design will come from the dry Mediterranean region. The vegetal pallet was composed following two principals; on the one hand, all species must be able to handle the climatic conditions of Jeddah with a small but regularly disposed amount of water.

On the other hand the garden will be the focal point of the composition of the new terminal that thousands of visitors will observe, while they are passing or waiting in the hall of the terminal. Many international travelers will simply change flight in the terminal so the only image they will conserve from the city of Jeddah will be the terminal building with its garden in the center. That is why it is crucial to give a seductive and precious image to the travelers and the pilgrims.

Adler Hall Riga, Latvia

dler Hall is a master planning and landscape design for a private estate in Jurmala, on the Gulf of Riga, Latvia. The estate is set on dunes in a pine forest, on the site of an old hospital. Coe Design’s masterplan for the area has remained sensitive to the ecology of the site which is locally significant, so any interventions were made with a light touch. The project implemented local features and techniques throughout the scheme to create a truly modernised rendition of a classic European estate. The road leading to the house has been paved with black and white setts from Prague, in a distinctive and unique pattern, whilst a sculptural oval wall set down in the surrounding dunes, surrounds the estate and forms the entrance courtyard to the house. The wall is constructed from Urals stone and render painted in accordance with local decorative traditions.

Many of the themes and motifs used in the garden also feature in the house, creating a synergy between the two spaces. The Landscape now includes a formal garden; a courtyard and a sculpture garden; containing modern and traditional art works from the client’s collection. Work for the project is still ongoing as Jenny Coe, practice founder and director, was recently asked by the client to make a visit to discuss additions to the garden for the forthcoming summer season. London's Southern Borough gets major revamp

creating a traffic canyon that acts as a barrier to pedestrian movement - and which is seen by many, as one of the main physical hurdles for Croydon to overcome in achieving its plans for large-scale regeneration of the area.

D

espite Britain’s economic slow down, plans to revamp the South London town of Croydon will go ahead with landscaping expected to be completed in 2015. Netherlands based OKRA Landscape Architects beat off competition from international firms to lead the way on the complete redesign of Wellesley Road and Park Lane. These two roads completely bisect Croydon’s central business and retail area, separating the main East Croydon BR station from the heart of the town and

The competition was set up to encourage interest from as wide a range of top-level urban design teams as possible, and also to announce to the local business community and potential investors that Croydon means business when it comes to planning for the future. Working with the London Development Agency and Transport for London, Croydon led a team of judges who spent months considering detailed proposals from the final two contenders in the international design competition. These two - from OKRA and Field Operations - were selected from a shortlist of four after the initial part of the competition attracted a total

of 50 entries from as far apart as America, Italy and Sweden. Although the jury admired Field Operations for their bold and simple design, which displayed intellectual clarity, the tough decision was eventually made to go with OKRA, who led a consortium bid from a team consisting of Karakusevic Carson Architects, Urhahn Urban Design, Peter Brett Associates and Soundings.

Cllr Steve O’Connell, chair of the jury, said: “We didn’t have an easy job in separating these two submissions, but we ended up favouring the OKRA proposals for a number of reasons, including the projected capital and future maintenance costs, their response to transport needs, their plans to involve local people and businesses at every stage of the project and also their comprehensive approach to sustainability.” Visionary architect Wil Allsop, whose Third City vision for Croydon has helped provide the impetus for the whole project said: “I was very

impressed by the OKRA proposal. It will transform the Wellesley Road into a usable place where people will feel comfortable to dwell and relax. The project will also go a long way to restore the East West links through the centre of Croydon. This is just the type of catalyst that is required at this time.” In the plans of the Dutch-British team, Wellesley Road and Park Lane will be transformed into a green core in the city that is easy to cross over and is connected to green ´urban rooms´ beside it. The amount of space for automobile traffic is limited drastically in favour of pedestrians and cyclists. The highway exit on the South

The profile is transformed into spacious pedestrian strips on the sides, a car connection on the West side, a green median strip with a track for cyclists, pedestrians and skaters and a public transport lane on the East side. Pedestrian zones are activated by transformation of the now dull plinths in active programs and the connection to a diversity of new green (semi) public spaces in the blocks lying behind. Croydon Council plans to confirm the contract details by the end of the July so that actual design works may begin by the end of August.

EUR CENTRAL LAKE PARK ROME By Mario Pisani

32

T

he EUR centre dates back to the 1930s as a project partially completed for the Universal Exhibition of 1942, which took place in Rome. Conceived as a modern expression to celebrate the architecture of the Fascist period on the anniversary commemoration of the Marcia su Roma. The project was completed for the 1960 XVII Olympics, with the construction of the Pier Luigi Nervi and Marcello Piacentini Palazzo dello Sport, the Velodrome by Ligini, Ortensi and Ricci (recently demolished),

and the present layout of the lake precinct together with its surrounding green areas by Raffaele De Vico, the designer of many other important garden projects. The park, which is conceived as the centre of the whole project, is also of some historical interest. Particularly noteworthy is the monumental Giardino delle Cascate with its rich play of water, sound and music, which is only activated for important occasions. The whole concept remains one of exceptional scenographic value. With the passage of over half a century, the area obviously needed updating and rehabilitation. The result is a series of structures such as the Cythera floating platform constructed in 2005. Two years later, the Hashi bridge over the waterfall of the lake and the four gates to the waterfall garden on I www.landscape-me.com I June 2011

the main waterfall derives its name from the Japanese word meaning ‘bridge’. It aims to emphasize a threshold and linkage between departure and arrival. This passage, connecting the two sides of the main waterfall, follows the natural undulations of the terrain. The main structure is in Inox steel while the paving utilizes exotic timbers. Handrails and balustrades are in Inox netting

the theme of the four elements were installed. The Cythera platform derives its name from the mythical island of the Roman goddess Venus, a name chosen by Franco Zagari, one of the most important landscape and garden designers of today, as an appropriate title for a project set in what must be one of the most suggestive contemporary art contexts. Parallel to its perimeters, a floating terrace, houses a fascinating plantation comprising an array of waterlilies. The island itself consists of five interconnected floating arenas paved in timber with intermittent inserted layers

allowing a translucent sense of transparency. Four new highly coloured gateways serve as the introduction to the Giardino delle Cascate, designed taking into consideration and evoking the original concept of the project, which was to have rose creepers planted along the two sides of the Viale Cristoforo Colombo approach road. These will eventually replace the ones that are currently in place. The load bearing structure of the project consists of profiles and sheets of polished steel recalling the Torres and La Pena Villa Cecilia project in Barcelona, surely one of the most ingenious and extraordinary gardens of the last century. 36

he Baku White City master plan envisages the creation of 10 universal urban districts with each of them to offer its residents the best living, working, recreation and entertainment conditions. Baku City will rearrange and expand the Boulevard, the gem of Baku that is situated right in the centre of the Baku Bay. The Oilers’ Avenue, one of the most favourite streets of the people of Baku that runs along the Boulevard, will also be made longer.

The modern centre of Baku will include a whole new city transportation system. For instance, it is planned to build a new Underground station that will give access right to the central square of Baku White City; it is also in the plan to expand the bus route grid and to run a tram line along the whole coast. Moreover, an all-new water transport line will run along the boulevard. The creation of a new and modern city centre in the capital will provide added opportunities to attract local and

overseas investments. The future investors have special privileges kept in stock for them as an incentive. Another impressive feature is the “Ecol Engineering Services Co” (SOCAR); the special polluted land purging activity has been started in the city in accordance with the master planner’s sustainable approach. The Baku White City Projects involves not only the British company “Atkins” that specialize in engineering designs and the Azeri specialists, but also such luminary architect firms as Foster + Partners and F+A Architects. The key aspirations of the project are to develop one of the greatest urban districts in the region and to

make the most efficient use of land through optimizing development densities, whilst integrating the urban environment with convenient and innovative transport options. Landscape talks to lead architect Tim Askew about the Baku White City project. What is the concept of the BakuWhite City project? What makes it unique? A: Before I explain the concept of the project, I would like to touch upon the issue of urban environment in general and in particular, since the formation of the latter is directly connected with the components of the concept. The point is that the urban environment is a synthesis of urban spaces used

and perceived, from primary, private (yard, housing estate) to the generally valid city spaces (streets, squares and boulevards, public gardens, historic and cultural monuments, etc.). Much of our urban environment depends on, seemingly, little things: functional zoning of small urban spaces (courtyards, public garden, mini-markets, pedestrian zones, etc.), placement of public transportation stations, parking, street furniture, small architectural forms and etc. Proper placement of individual elements and complexes, a carefully planned road and transport infrastructure, availability of social and community facilities, competent choice of varieties of greenery according to their aesthetic properties - this and other factors can affect the subconscious of citizens, raising their taste and culture. The urban environment has a very significant impact not only on the daily behavior and attitude of citizens, but also on long-term and fundamental processes of civil society: values, trust in public institutions, relations between social groups, norms and patterns of behavior, attitude to the historical heritage and the conditions for the formation of the youth. Given that one of the tasks set before us - Azerbaijani developers, was

to give the project the investment attractiveness, the image of the Baku White City, or its concept, was developed specifically with regard to all the above mentioned elements. Namely, it focuses primarily on the creation of urban areas that would combine the original architecture with the technological ease of construction, economic viability with the ergonomics of use, universal infrastructure using the principles of environmental architecture, in short, all that is necessary for enabling favourable conditions for human life in an urban environment. Prior to developing the concept for the Baku White City, we studied in detail the layout and development of such prominent cities as Barcelona, London and Paris, dwelling at length on the details, optimally corresponding to our ideas about the future center of Baku and most reflective of its features. As a result, the future image of the Baku White City has absorbed all the best in the world that can be integrated into already existing urban environment. In addition, an underground station, overlooking the central square of the Baku White City will be built there, as well as the development of a bus transport network will be carried out. It is planned to drive a tram line along the coast. It is provided to lay along the boulevard line a sea route to enable use of water transport. Thus, there is an active urban complex, in which the location of various objects in close proximity to each other will greatly reduce the need for further movement across the city. One of the main conditions of functioning and sustainable economic development of the city is a well-developed infrastructure. What will the infrastructure of the Baku White City look like? A: You are absolutely right. Just the availability of a developed infrastructure increases the investment attractiveness of the city to potential investors, stimulates business development and, therefore, encourages the development of the urban economy. This, in its turn, leads to an increase of revenues to the city budget. Ten or fifteen years ago no one was astonished at the sight of a micro-district standing alone in the neighborhood. Its inhabitants used to do shopping and searched for entertainment “downtown”. Times are changing and the modern new settlers - residents of micro districts, where

the creation of infrastructure - shops, entertainment centers, and consumer services - were provided at the initial stage of the project, were much lucky. Moving into the new house, they immediately begin to live a full life. “This is provided on the territory of the Baku White City as well, where the creation of engineering and public utilities, transportation and road and social infrastructure is planned. Creation of engineering and utilities infrastructure, consisting of water, energy and telecommunications networks provides for a universal complex of utilities throughout the Baku White City. Each of these services was conceptually designed based on a combination of national and international standards and design criteria, particularly, taking account of the British Standards (BS) and GOST

/ SNIP (Construction Norms and Rules). The network of utility services will cover each building located in the Baku White City. Also, appropriate measures to prevent possible failures in supply, were provided for. Sewerage and drainage system of the Baku White City will be organized taking account of the relief of the project area and precise calculations of the depth of communication and flow rates that will allow the new streets of Baku to stay dry even in the rainy day. The design criteria for developing the concept of the power and gas supply network were based on achieving of the following main objectives: the specific requirements of the power consumption of electrical and gas systems and equipment, ensuring safe and controlled network of electric and gas utilities in the development area, implementation

Undoubtedly, the most wonderful changes. The Baku boulevard - one of the attractions of Baku, a favorite place of recreation of the Baku residents and visitors. The restoration of the coastal zone of the Black city would make the area more attractive and comfortable for leisure and entertainment.

of measures to ensure safety for the protection of both people and equipment. According to the concept of the project the residential neighborhood of the Baku White City will host sites for retailing - shops, pharmacies and other facilities that will be located on the first floor of buildings in the so-called “flexible commercial space.” It is assumed that the distance from each residential building to the shopping facility will not exceed 500m or 5 minutes walk, which is recommended by the existing norms for urban planning.

Due to its location in the heart of Baku Bay, the Baku White City significantly increases the length of the existing urban coastal boulevard. The territory of 17,5 m, with a length of 1300 m and a width of 150 m along the entire length - this will be the length of a Baku boulevard, which is already unique in its size and is considered to be the biggest in the world.

What are the plans for the park of Nobel? How it will look like after reconstruction? The origin of the park goes back to ancient times. It is known that it was founded by Nobel brothers in 1883 during the first oil boom. Until now the park keeps the memory of its founders - the building, in which the Nobel brothers’ office was situated. The reconstructed old Nobel’s Park will become a public place of recreation and entertainment. There will be a lot of greenery, artificial ruins added to the historical elements, sculptures, children’s play structures, as well as the opportunity for representations out-of-doors. Being the biggest park in Baku, and occupying the territory of 9.5 hectares, the new park promises to play an important role in the life of the Baku White City. For the convenience of visiting the park, the well-organized and organized area will be equipped with parking, and it will make the park a favorite place for recreation of the townspeople and an appropriate venue for city events. How the face of our boulevard will be changed? What changes are waiting this visiting card of our capital? I www.landscape-me.com I June 2011

The new boulevard will be connected in the west with the old boulevard, while facilitating the continuation to the east. A tram line will be built along the coast of the Caspian Sea. Thus, another form of ecological public transport connecting the whole territory of the coast will be provided. According to the plan, a sea route for future water taxi or small ferries, that will link the multiple points of the Baku Bay to the city center, will be introduced. According to the concept, the coastal line will accommodate a lot of cultural and entertainment facilities, the most original of which will be the Pavilion of Contemporary Art. Another attraction of the new boulevard, which makes the coast recognizable at a first glance, promises to be a hotel building of unusual shape, located on a pier projecting into the sea. 48

Considered landscape with alternating water elements, a Ferris wheel, elevating visitors to an altitude of 65 meters, an ice rink in the shopping center will complement the already lively festive atmosphere prevailing in the coastal boulevard of the city .One of the favorite street of city dwellers – Neftcilar avenue, will be extended along the new boulevard, providing an opportunity to admire a view of the Boulevard and the Baku Bay. Is it provided to establish recreational landscapes in the Baku White City? Absolutely. The emergence of new trends and styles in architecture can not but affect the formation of a new culture in urban landscape design. The areas occupied by the recreational landscape in the Baku White City would amount to 39 hectares. Streets with pedestrian paths, green lawns

and trees, planted randomly, will form a natural landscape, as if created by nature. Parks and squares will be laid out; squares and sidewalks will be planted with tress and shrubs. This natural landscape zoning will emphasize an individual character of each of the quarters and create a landscape disposing to walks. As a result, the look of the district will be improved; the level of the comfort of living will be raised, not to mention the environmental benefits of gardening.

Women in landscape

What inspired you to become a landscape architect and was your educational background directly related to this? My inspiration came from what I call passion for the rich variety of plants in Lebanon. My training also provided inspiration, having been on courses with famous English designers such as John Brooks, Robin Williams and others.

Traude Francis

In your opinion, what are the essentially attributes that any landscape architect should possess? The essential attributes any landscaper should possess is curiosity and interest. We should always be eager to learn from what we see around us and to watch carefully and memorize the behaviour of the gardens in different conditions. It is a passion for me. The Middle East has seen major developments in the landscaping industry over the past few years with major projects in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and previously Egypt. Now the attention must be turned to sustaining these ‘Green’ landscapes for years to come. How can this be done baring in mind our environmental responsibility to reduce our

52

I www.landscape-me.com I June 2011

carbon footprint and the limited skills of the maintenance workers who are left to preserve the landscapes, once the architects have handed over the job? Yes it is amazing how much attention is given to “outdoor works” in the Middle Eastern countries and North Africa to Morocco. Lack of water can be helped by choosing adequate plants like draught resistant succulents, cactus and palms of all kinds. When conditions are given to design “dry Landscapes” we use all the mineral material available such as rocks, pebbles stone slabs, sculptured stone. Succulents, who live with minimum water, provide a vast choice of varieties. Water will become the most precious resource in the coming years and it’s likely to become a source of conflict. How can you as a landscape professional plan ahead in your work to ensure that water is treated with the respect it deserves and not wasted? In order to ensure economical treatment of water supply in landscaping in the Middle East, a serious professional irrigation company should be entrusted with the planning and execution of the work.

The establishing of a dripping system underground is one way and of course watering should take place before or after this. Sun shading by heat resisting trees, like Eucalyptus and Acacias also helps. In order to avoid arid Landscape, desert plants should be used as ground covers. On a trip to Jordan, I did observe that plants in the desert survived months of draught looking dry and shrunk, but with a minor supply of water or a little rain in the winter, they will come to life and even bloom. Do you believe that the landscape industry in this region will undergo a major change in their design practices and be forced to adapt in the years ahead to overcome this problem of water scarcity and how can you avoid having only arid landscapes? With the increase of property development and high prices for land, landscaped areas will be less, unfortunately. Project managers tend to build the maximum allowed by law and even find ways to increase built-up areas. To add more plants, I tend to use climbers on walls pergolas, fences and so forth. These generally do with little water. Which project have you been most proud

of throughout your career and why? The project I would be most proud of is one of the first I have done. It’s situated in the mountains of Lebanon at a thousand meters above sea level. It became a mature garden. With time, it is a pleasure to see huge trees shading a spacious rock garden with water cascading on to a Lily pond. The garden is very colorful with a big variety of shrubs and roses of all kinds, climbers and bed roses. A mixed border is flowering almost all year around and provides for an abundance of cut flowers. If you could create your dream project, what would it entail? The above garden is ordinarily my dream project. Being in the moderate climate zone, I could use a big variety of plants, conditions being better then in the subtropical area around Beirut or seaside conditions. There we can observe the change of seasons. Very rarely, there is snow and so all the Mediterranean plants do well. Just as do Cedars or high altitude trees like Acers and Trilias. As a woman in a male dominated profession, what has been your experience

working in this field in the Middle East? Except on the occasion of our project, I always enjoyed working with respect to my male colleagues, the only one negative experience was on grounds of business interests. In all cases, I am backed up by my son who is also a passionate Landscape Architect. With the exception of water, what are the main challenges your industry will encounter in the coming years and how can these be overcome in your opinion? Land is becoming scarce and suburbs are becoming also expensive, therefore its best to take advantage and live in lightly built areas outside the city for enjoying nature. What advice would you give other women wanting to enter this profession, both here and overseas? My advise to women is to have a good educational background, live your life as a landscaper with ambition and passion. Always see and observe our wonderful world. Watch the nature behavior and development. It’s a wonderful world if we are ready to open our eyes.
