Action speaks louder than words n April 22, the world marked the 42nd Earth Day in a bid to mobilize communities into action to preserve the earth. Millions of people from more than 170 countries staged events around the world. The UAE, KSA, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Egypt and Lebanon thousands marked the day by promoting the Billion Acts of Green®. The UAE hosted the “Recycle to Give Back to Earth” event, initiated by the Emirates Environmental Group with the cooperation of their student members who conducted a house-to-house campaign to endorse recycling in households. Although small in scale, collectively these initiatives can contribute to real change to the environment. Likewise each of us can do something similar by making simple lifestyle changes. Since the summer holidays are just around the corner and most are already planning their next getaway, we thought we’d suggest in this May edition of Landscape some of the best eco-friendly lodges and hotels from the region and beyond to consider. Eco-tourism has become the buzzword of the last decade but it’s more than just a fade, the benefits to the environmental and economic contributions to small communities around the world are undisputed. So why not holiday in a luxury resort that also reduces your carbon footprint and promotes job creation in the local area? To make a pledge and for more details on how you could take part in the earth day initiative, visit www.earthday.org.

News & Events Piscine Middle East a new pool & spa exhibition taking place in the UAE 1st edition of the leading MENA Swimming Pool & Spa Event “We had 90 brands and 10 countries represented and they globally all reached their targets: finding projects to equip their products with, presenting new products to their distributors, open new markets and discover new countries to export too. It is also a very good opportunity to train their clients to their products and also know more about the local market.”

Organised by GL Events exhibitions, the first edition of Piscine Middle East show will brought leading international exhibitors to Abu Dhabi to meet their counterparts and showcase the latest innovation from the global pool industry to discuss opportunities and challenges in the most dynamic pool market in the world. Developers, contractors, as well as service providers in the pool industry met companies which either supply ready-made, construct custom-made swimming pools, or both in Abu Dhabi. The show brought the right balance between quality, price and qualified maintenance in the sector. With 60 international exhibitors and about 2000 visitors expected for this first edition, the Piscine exhibition will showcase a high quality range of swimming pools, spa products and services to specifiers and buyers in the Middle East, North African countries and India. “The exhibitors who participated in Piscine Middle East form part of the world leaders. Their role is to assist local leaders by offering them the latest equipment and technologies on the market and by training them to use such equipment.” Says Mrs Noemi Petit, Show Director for GL Events Exhibitions. “We received more visitors than expected and this is due partly to our partnership with Cityscape. Being co-located with Cityscape was logical for us and gave the opportunity to many Cityscape’s visitors to find solutions concerning pools and spas in their real estate projects. This is a good example of synergy of trade shows. For this first edition, Piscine Middle East welcome more than 3,000 visitors- pool builders-distributors-developpers-landscapersmunicipalities-architects and also government bodies came to the show. Professionals came from the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Kuwait, Tunisia, Turkey and some East African countries”, she added. With the latest techniques and innovations in the field of construction for water treatment, pools and spa, Piscine Middle East will be

the new platform for both developers and contractors. The Piscine Middle East 2012 in Abu Dhabi was hosted between 22-25 April, in order to be the principal event every year to discuss trends, opportunities and challenges in the most big spa market in the world with an estimated value of 10 billion US Dollars by annum in 2011. An educational program was held in parallel with the show: a conference program to help professionals understand individual needs and advise them on how to handle customer relations. When asked about her next year’s event Mrs Petit ads, “we will develop Piscine Middle East next year with more exhibitors, and we will propose technical visits and training sessions on top of the show and we will strengthen on the importance of water treatment and the launch of new products (technologies, shapes, overlays, pool decoration and accessories). On top of that, we will gather a special sector for aquatic parks”. Piscine Middle East is a part of Piscine International show network the world’s leading pool and spa show with 1000 exhibitors and 18000 visitors. For the last 30 years, it has been gathering international major pool and spa equipment manufacturers and service providers. Piscine Global will take place in Lyon-France, 13-16 November 2012.

Al Barari unveils ‘Greenworks’

A Eco-friendly Development Launches Region’s Largest Plant Nursery

l Barari, a unique and groundbreaking eco-friendly development in Dubai, is proud to announce the launch of Greenworks, the region’s largest plant nursery offering a full range landscaping services including landscape design, construction and maintenance and plant supplies as part of the retail offering. Located in the heart of the 14.2 million square foot Al Barari development in the royal enclave of Nad Al Sheba, Greenworks is now being launched to market after successfully providing their landscaping services to Al Barari, making it the lowest density development in the UAE and more akin to a botanical garden than a residential community. The plant nursery was the first project of Al Barari Chairman Mr Zaal Mohammed Zaal in 1997, which stemmed from his fervent devotion to nature and plants and the Zaal family’s longstanding passion for the environment. The first plant was imported in 2002-2003, and by 2009 the plant nursery had grown to the extent that it boasted an extensive collection of plant species grown on site. The nursery’s success and impressive growth as a core pillar of the Al Barari development inspired the group to take the concept to market this year.

Greenworks will offer a full range of landscaping services to both B2C and B2B customers, from the sale of plants and trees, to landscape design, construction and maintenance, as well as seasonal services for both indoor and outdoor plants. The maintenance and after-sales assistance is also a core part of the Greenworks offering. Whether dealing with individual consumers or large groups, the Greenworks team - led by passionate horticulturalist, general manager Henry Raven - is

UAE’S ‘GREEN PLAN’ TO BE AIDED BY NEW LANDSCAPING EVENT Outdoor Design Build & Supply A brand new trade show has been launched by experienced Dubai-based event organisers, Streamline Marketing Group and will run for 3 days from 25-27 March 2013, taking place at Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The exhibition, entitled Outdoor Design Build & Supply, will be focused on the design, build and supply for all private and public outdoor space in the UAE and GCC – including public parks, municipal works, private & palace gardens, green areas within urban areas, major residential and commercial projects, irrigation and landscaping. As the region’s new one stop shop for the outdoor built environment, the exhibition has been carefully designed to fill a gap in the market for a dedicated showcase that caters for the burgeoning outdoor market in the region.

dedicated to providing customers with the highest quality of care and services. Al Barari Creative Director> Kamelia Zaal said “Greenworks is the result of the Zaal family’s longstanding passion for the environment, which has translated into the creation of this unique plant cultivation space that lies at the heart of Al Barari. For almost ten years, Greenworks has exclusively serviced Al Barari, carefully nurturing the lush greenery that makes up 80 per cent of this unique eco-conscious development. Now, we are proud to launch Greenworks to both consumers and business customers so that individuals, groups and corporations can enjoy our comprehensive variety of landscaping services and share in our passion for nature, plants and environmental sustainability.” Henry Raven, Greenworks general manager added “I am personally very excited to take Greenworks to market and we are very eager to display our plants and share our knowledge and expertise with consumers in the UAE and the region. Each plant in Greenworks is diligently tended to by our team of 60 experts who secure the adequate temperature, wind and soil consistency for every leaf on the premises. Greenworks is different from anything else currently on offer in the UAE, and we look forward to welcoming customers through our doors when we open this month.”

First on the to-do list of the organisers was to receive the backing of the largest buyers of outdoor products and services in the emirates, the UAE municipalities and important partnership meetings have been held with Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Al Ain Municipalities. Director of Parks & Recreational Services for Al Ain Municipality, Dr. Helal Saed Al Kaabi said: ““This is an important show for us and we are very happy to be supporting the exhibition. Along with the other municipalities in the UAE, we are right behind an event that will highlight the work we are putting in, to ensure the United Arab Emirates landscape becomes greener and more environmentally friendly over the next few years. In Abu Dhabi alone we have opened 5 parks already this year and a further 24 are in the pipeline. We will need to meet key suppliers at the show to help us achieve our targets” MUNICIPALITY ‘GREEN’ TARGETS Those targets include creating 25 sq metres of ‘open space’ per resident, against a current 20 sqm per capita, which is already more than double the international standard of 9 sqm, set by the World Health Organisation. Increasing it to 25 sqm would put the UAE in the same league as major global cities such as London (27 sqm), Delhi (22 sqm) and Vancouver (22 sqm) respectively. Additionally, there are currently 7000 hectares of green space in Dubai, from an overall figure of 152,500 in its total urban area. The vision of Dubai Municipality is to have a quarter (approx 38,000) of its emirate covered in green, a spectacularly impressive target. In Abu Dhabi, about 20 pecent of the capital is covered in greenery, up from 14 percent last year and new parks are just part of the plan, with more than 35 being built since 2010. Trees, shrubbery and street landscaping will also be upgraded in the capital this year. From the first show and over the next few years, an important goal for the event is to help facilitate these government led strategies and provide a vital platform for local and internationally recognised manufacturers and suppliers, who will provide the best possible products and services. Heading up the event is Show Director, James Raffoul, and he was optimistic when speaking about what lies ahead; “We are launching this event at completely the right time, before an important period of rapid ‘green’ transformation in this country’s landscape – not forgetting the wider Middle East too. We are continually speaking to the market so that we can cater to an industry that needs a show of this type. Now with the backing of the municipalities, amongst others, we are listening to the requirements of the key buyers and suppliers to provide a platform for all those involved, where they can showcase the best the outdoor market has to offer” www.theoutdoorshow.ae

s more grassy fields are converted to artificial turf, many disadvantages of application of the synthetic material are being overlooked. A rising temperature problem means that installation can come with drawbacks. According to some studies, the infill material can heat up to 65° C in warmer months, far higher than anything that could be considered safe; becoming a health hazard above 48°C and simply unusable for long periods of time during the day in spring or summer. While things will get a lot cooler when the sun goes down, artificial turf unintentionally contributes to the urban heat island effect – along

processes that creates a more hygienic environment. The absence of these biological systems allow the contaminants to simply remain dormant and infectious for longer periods of time – even Salmonella has been known to be viable on dry surfaces for several months. While the water-saving prowess of artificial turf is exemplary, the EPIC system – which uses natural grass and has the capacity to save up to 80% of water – means that synthetic material is not the only answer for reducing hydration requirements. The revolutionary subsurface EPIC (Environmental Passive Integrated Chamber) system provides exceptional drainage,

Natural over Artificial Turf with the Application of the EPIC System with concrete asphalt – whereby it radiates heat back into the night, making temperatures slightly higher for the surrounding area. Some proponents of artificial turf claim that it is easier to manage and maintain. This is not necessarily true. While grass needs to be mowed on a reoccurring basis, the act itself removes accumulated dirt and debris that will leave the lawn looking replenished. Artificial turf, on the other hand, will start to collect this waste – especially in desert climates where dust quickly becomes entrapped in the upright fibers. While earlier versions allowed for vacuuming, doing so in newer versions can cause damage to the synthetic field. This in turn means that sanitation is frequently overlooked, and pathogens are allowed to penetrate the area. Whereas on natural grass, complex soil bacteria and other microorganisms initiate decomposition and neutralization

10

I www.landscape-me.com I May 2012

irrigation, filtration, and acts as a water reservoir with zero waste. The innovative chamber is positioned below the surface, and is completely non-pressurized, allowing water to rise up to plant roots via capillary action after being filtered through sand. Lined with EPDM (a waterproof rubber liner), there is no loss to the ground and virtually no evaporation, allowing the natural grass to have a constant source of water. Its unique design eradicates water blockage, and allows for the use of fresh, brackish, grey and treated water. Not only is less water used, but there is a constant source for irrigation requirements. Grass remains hydrated, green and fresh, and the need for artificial turf is dismissed. For those applications already using artificial turf, EPIC does propose a solution that works to eliminate the intense heat associated with the synthetic material. EPIC system provides two cooling options

which can operate independently or simultaneously to provide field heat reduction on a continuous basis. Where conventional artificial fields use a gravel base that is inefficient in transferring heat, the EPIC system uses materials that divert this heat away from the turf.

The first option uses a sand base instead of gravel. Combined with water, to create a damp water film that is conducive for heat transfer, heat has a pathway to move and be absorbed into the cool damp sand base below. That is because heat will always transfer from a hot area to a cool area. By establishing a passive but effective heat absorption pathway, test fields with an EPIC base cooled by as much as by 10° C below identical models with a conventional dry gravel base.

The second option is injecting air into the EPIC™ base profile. Much like an ‘air hockey table’, the EPIC Sports Field of any size can move damp air from the base of damp sand, past the cooled fibers, to the air above the field. Damp air may be as cool as 18° C, and can absorb additional heat through evaporative cooling. Air injection can be automatically controlled or manual operated to boost a cooling requirement for a short time period. This breakthrough technology is suitable for all brands of artificial turf surfaces regardless of infill combinations. The application also makes the switch to natural grass convenient, where the artificial turf can be pulled and the seeds laid down.

Ecotourism

Guilt Free travelling Ecological tourism is a question of thinking about the environmental impact that you make by traveling, and applying yourself to the question of how to travel in an environmentally responsible manner.

Backpackers, student travelers and hostel-goers in general, have been very much in the vanguard of those flocking to an important movement which the International Ecotourism Society defines as: “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the wellbeing of local people.”

Voyages Longitude 131° Australia Nine kilometres from sacred Uluru, luxury and exclusivity meet ecotourism’s best practice. The resort’s design and construction minimizes its impact on the environment, while a program of guest activities and tours focuses on the environmental and cultural elements of the landscape.” Voyages Longitude 131° offers immersion in the World Heritage listed wilderness of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, complete with private views of the sun rising and setting over Uluru (Ayers Rock). Since it opened in June 2002, Longitude 131° has attracted widespread international and domestic acclaim. It was one of the first developments approved under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act and has established world best practices that ecotourism operators around the world now strive to achieve. In depth flora and fauna surveys were undertaken on the site to protect vulnerable species such as the Mulgara (a small native marsupial), Great Desert Skink and Marsupial Mole. Devastated by a wild bushfire in October 2003, the property was re-built with the same meticulous attention to detail. In particular, the use and transport of prefabricated structures, together with light weight machinery, minimized impacts on the delicate ecology which was in a vital stage of regeneration. 16

Milia Mountain Retreat, Greece Milia is an authentic 17th century mountain settlement which has been transformed into and eco-friendly tourist complex; it seems to have sprouted from the lands of Crete. A glorious location boasting exceptional rugged beauty in the area of Kissamos. Placed among plain trees, chestnut trees, and mountain tops reaching the skies, the area overwhelms visitors with its unique diversity. The settlement of Milia was abandoned in 1948. Basically, from that time on began the gradual degradation of the environment. Uncontrolled hunting and shepherding, forest fires and the depletion of local resources were just some of the unforgivable acts. So in 1982 Milia was brought back to life, by focusing on the local environment, and it was an uphill battle. Organic methods are strictly applied to the farming techniques and they produce their own natural fertilizers. All buildings were renovated exclusively using local materials so intervention to the surrounding area was minimal. From the beginning they used renewable 26

energy resources focusing on solar energy and they exclusively apply “clean” energy techniques. The style of the cottages is simple and charming. All materials used are natural (many of the individual stone cottages actually incorporate the side of the mountain as an interior wall) and furniture – locally handmade pieces and restored antiques – has been chosen to blend in. Thanks to the quality of the Cretan ingredients they use in their kitchen, they don’t need complicated, exotic recipes. Instead, guests can enjoy the rich flavours of freshly harvested vegetables, local herbs, tender meats, and fresh fish.

he Millennium Park, originally known as Lakefront Millennium Park, is part of a more extensive park that is situated in downtown Chicago. The park is not only one of the largest public green spaces in the city, but it also showcases the diversity of contemporary architecture.

Parks

Chicago has been described as one of the ten most influential cities in the world. In the downtown district city known as the Loop there are imposing skyscrapers such as the Willis Tower that has 108 floor levels and scales the dizzy height of 442 metres. Highrise buildings originated in Chicago after the great fire that destroyed the city The project dates back to 1997 and was the vision of Mayor Richard M. Daley. It took six years to complete, although some parts of the park have been revisited and thereafter improved. The initial project estimate of 150 million dollars was well surpassed for a final total cost of 475 million and the project was designed by the architect Frank Gehry. The increase in capital costs for the construction led the city authorities to pursue sponsorships from private companies which assisted in part financing the construction of various elements within the park which extends to a superficial area of over 24.5 hectares over rail and large parking lots. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion designed by Frank Gehry is the main architectural element within the park. This is a huge open-air theater with some five thousand seats whilst

the surrounding lawn can accommodate another fifteen thousand. The structure is composed of tubes and plates of stainless steel and titanium spirals, positioned to create a distinctly unique sound effect. In the square there is the Cloud Gate, a sculpture made up of 110 tons of steel, called “The Bean”, by Anish Kapoor, a famous artist of Indian origin and his first work of public art in the United States. Recently the artist created a sculpture composed of a series of mirrors in London’s famous Kensington Gardens, made of polished steel mirror that creates a distorted image of their surroundings. This constitutes a series of artistic interventions situated throughout the park and to reflect the change of colours and foliage in the gardens of Kensington. The work is a reflection of the environment - the sky, the trees, the water and the fauna of the park all together to create a magical and enchanting atmosphere. Park sculptures and gardens The Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa (2004) consists of two glass towers facing each 15 meters high. Their location delimits a reservoir of about 70 meters invaded by water. The towers are screens that have video images appearing on them, when the faces disappear the towers are transformed into glass walls from which water flowsone of the park’s most popular sttractions.

Secret garden The Lurie Garden (2.5 hectares) was designed by the firm Gustafson Guthrie Nichols Ltd., Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel, and has a sleek and esoteric design that pays tribute to the city with the motto Horto Urbs, which refers to the transformation of Chicago from a flat landscape and wetland in a vertical city of highrises. The design of the park consists of four main elements: Shoulder Hedge, Light Plate, Dark Plate and Seam Boardwalk. The first frames the garden from the north and west with a 14-foot high metal structure that models the plant into a barrier, forming a monumental entrance that gives people the feeling of entering into a secret garden. It is also the physical representation of the painting by Carl Sandburg “The city of big shoulders”, referring to Chicago. The Light and Dark Plate represent the landscape that has evolved: from past to future. The latter expresses the wild landscape of the origins characterized by dark tones. In contrast, the bright and vivid colors make the landscape of the future clean and controlled. The Seam Boardwalk, with the division between the two diagonals marks the two historic eras that generated the development of the landscape of Chicago, oriented towards the historic mosaic of the city. A timber walkway follows the diagonal and floats over a pond of water. The sound of water against the seam is a living reminder of the great lake nearby.

The BP pedestrian bridge also designed by Gehry connects Millennium Park to Daley Bicentennial Plaza. It’s nicknamed “The Snake” because of its curved shape. Meanwhile, the McCormick tribune plaza was the first attraction in Millennium Park to be inaugurated. It was funded by a grant from the McCormick Tribune Foundation, and for four months a year it operates as an ice rink, with free admission to all users. When not in use as an ice rink, it is transformed as an extensive outdoor dining facility that is home to several culinary events. In addition to energy production, three of the four pavilions provide access to the lower area of the park and the fourth pavilion, is a reception center to the public. Finally, we have the modern wing of the Art Institute of Chicago designed by Renzo Piano, for the art collections of the twentieth and twenty-first century European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, architecture, design and photography. The structure is characterized by an external membrane which has been called “a flying magic carpet,” located behind the original building dating back 130 years. The two structures are joined by a small gallery. The project also includes the construction of the Nichols Bridgeway, a pedestrian steel bridge almost 190 meters long and 20 meters high. It’s located above the Lurie garden and connects the museum with the nearby Millennium Park.

Garden Park

Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich, England

By Okra Landscape Architects

Cutty Sark hrough history the site of Cutty Sark gardens has been a fascinating location, it represents a pioneering place with international allure. A sense of history is anchored in the area: the Meridian GMT, the Royal Naval College, and the voyages of the Cutty Sark itself. With the Olympics in mind Cutty Sark Gardens will be a gateway to other destinations, while offering an interesting focal point itself. The potential of the area is in strong contrast with the way it is presenting itself at the moment. The challenges are to create an attractive place to be and to transform the area into an accessible area, which is not dominated by cars at the entrances. The key project in

T

38

I www.landscape-me.com I May 2012

revitalizing urban realm will regenerate the area that suffers from neglected urban edges and a poor presence. Backsides have to be transformed into active frontages, which contribute to the vibrancy of the area. The river walk needs to be changed into a friendly walk, as it is currently dominated by a lot of fences in the view. Tidal tectonics OKRA suggests that the Cutty Sark Gardens will be a tidal square, reacting to flows of people: Quiet in the early hours and large amounts of visitors during holidays. People are coming, staying or passing through.

The idea of ‘tidal square’ is based on functional flexibility. An inviting place, which provides both intimately scaled and large scale spaces and has an ability of adapting to larger and smaller events. The idea is to reduce and increase space. An intimate space will be created when a wet floor and fountains reduce space and create a pool where children can play. During an event the space will be transformed when the water is removed and a large paved area is available for people to move from one place to another. The area is proposed as both urban and green, creating a gradient to the river Thames. People will experience a sequence of atmospheres: the urban network, the square around Cutty Sark, the gardens and the River Thames’ Walk. Within the area a tectonic landscape provides easy access on different levels. Cutty Sark Gardens will be better connected to its urban environment by an optimized relationship between the sophisticated urban square around Cutty Sark and entrances at Greenwich Church Street and King William Walk. A cyclist and pedestrian route along the river Thames and a better connection to the Royal Naval College

will improve access on the other sides. The central position of the Cutty Sark will be strengthened: it will be a sculpture in between the square and the park zone. A vibrant and an intimate space will be created, providing a 24h, a weekly and a seasonal rhythm. New vibrant facades will change the relationship of Cutty Sark Gardens and the urban tissue. Active frontages change the vitality of urban space radically. OKRA suggests architecture, which contributes to a seamless connection of the urban tissue and Cutty Sark Gardens. A gently inclining slope on the west side offers potential for commercial activities and kiosks under a green roof. In structuring the south an urban solution will be provided in a more expressive way. The built environment presents the city to the square and on the other hand creates a facade for the square and a background for the ship. The nightscape supports this and will be both safe and interesting. Dynamic lighting and energy efficient system provides the right amount of light during evening and night, adjusted to the amount of visitors. Present and future The new ‘tidal square’ will accommodate urban life and create green scenery that is associated with the idea of gardens and parks. In the future Cutty Sark Gardens will be a prominent area along the river Thames, a green pearl along the riverside walk and a place to linger and a place of desire. With the upcoming Olympic Games 2012, Cutty Sark Gardens should be durable and able to develop in time. This development starts as soon as possible, showing visitors the square is changing. The accent will be on temporary measures, as well on specific issues like

40

I www.landscape-me.com I May 2012

entrances, safety and small programmatic interventions. During the Olympics, the square will be a green area with access for all. It accommodates different types of use, for different types of weather. A dynamic lighting scheme provides safety during evening and night. After the Olympic Games, Cutty Sark Gardens will change into ‘destination Cutty Sark Gardens’. Paved areas transform into permanent green areas. Extra attention will be paid to linkages to adjacent spaces, extra cycling facilities, creating different types of sub-spaces.

Home around nature

A

manali is a new residential development that has sprung up in the State of Hidalgo (80km north of Mexico City), around an existing dam of 1800 hectares. In the past, this dam, part of series of water bodies and reservoirs in the region, was used as a cistern for treated and pluvial water coming from the city. However, today it’s used only for pluvial water collection, making it almost 100% useable for human use once a new treatment plant, which is now under construction, is finished. In order to maximize the recreational exploitation of the site, with water sports and especially the existing lake, the investors bought the land to/from??? the government. This land was what is known in Mexico as “terrenos ejidales”, meaning they were given it for agricultural purposes and production, so the investors, originally from Mexico DF, had to negotiate with many owners. The fact that they associated with another local investor helped to facilitate the process GDU, Grupo de Diseño Urbano, were tasked with the Master Plan, which set out the residential development in relation to the golf course and preservation areas and reserves. In response to some of the conditions set by the

client, they created a layout where almost 80% of the lots have open vistas to the water and close contact with the golf course and golf house, which was designed by the internationally renowned architect Ricardo Legorreta. The access to the site is designed as a slowrevealing experience, through which the visitor gets to appreciate the landscape and the open vistas to the water, step by step. The first segment of the accessing road is framed by a colored wall and a row of agaves stricta, recovered from the site and the surrounding areas; when blooming, these plants offer a tall and stunning inflorescence that give a strong vertical sense to the arrangement, in contrast with the horizontality of the region and of the access itself. A fence surrounds each home but the vistas are completely open and unobstructed, letting the landscape and the distant water seem closer. The simply designed homes are built with local basaltic stone and meet environmental certifications. The whole site is shaped according to the existing grading, with a main spine or distributing road, which goes up and down reaching the different clusters of homes, opening up to the golf course and finally arriving at the lowest part of the site. In all its extension this spine is planted with jacaranda trees at both sides and with acacias on a central stripe. In those segments of the road where the topography was irregular and half of the spine was lower than the opposite one, the designers decided to completely hide one of the sides with a linear-like garden, which frames the open vistas to the lake. This decision was made to avoid unnecessary artificially grading in the site; in those segments where the road was naturally flat, they proposed a symmetric planting plan that allows vistas to both sides. This becomes a key experience in the site, discovering the areas from different perspectives and always preserving the terrain´s natural dynamic and the best views toward the natural enclosing.

The site also houses some plazas, alluding to typical neighborhood-scale parks that mark entrances or borders. These plazas, shaped as elevated gardens retained by stonewalls, have pergolas that provide shaded areas and are planted with arid trees such as mesquite trees (Prosopis) and pepper tree (Schinus sp). At the lowest part of the site, close to a future boat landing area, the road gets to a circular plaza with a rock arrangement that acts as a sculptural piece and reflects the local natural context. IRRIGATION The irrigation plan is based on the construction of three large cisterns that appear as small lakes in the site, which are next to the access

46

area and are shaped out of the existing depressions of the site. For this reason, they were built at different levels as three different yet combined lakes. The water is brought from two wells and a treatment plant directly to the upper lake; from here it is conducted by gravity, through a large pipe that appears as a sculptural piece in the landscape, to the second lake and finally directed to the lowest one. A bomb located in this last lake resend the water to the top to keep the water aerated and constantly circulating. The irrigation plan serves all green spaces in the site and the nine holes of the golf course. Two existing creeks in the site, which make part of a regional bird´s migratory route, were marked as natural reserves where no kind of construction is allowed. With this same concept of preservation, all houses in the complex must meet certain building constraints to maintain a responsible environment. This project is an example of how a private development can meet local environmental needs and contribute to enhance the natural character of a given region.
