Established in 2005. Before the implementation of the nature park there was a referendum to get approval from residents. It was a lengthy debate due to a high level of resistance especially from landowners and farmers. (tv2fyn.dk, visited 10.03.20)

Characteristic Bath Houses
The bath houses are almost 100 years old. They are placed between two waters, one with calm streams, the other with direct exposure to the Baltic Sea. The rentals are without expiration date and kept within families through generations. Only moderate improvements are allowed.(ærø.dk, visited 15.03.20).

Spatial sequences are connected spatial situations that are linked to each other through their access. The boundary between these spaces are closed and only one space can be perceived at one time. This is a way we work with the garden in a bigger scale. We use the existing closed walls and dense closed plantings to create these spatial situations

TAKING DOWN SOME OF THE WALL Semi closed boundary
In this project we work with the industrial walls and the plantings as a boundary, to create distance, connections and different experiences in the gardens. With a morphological approach we study how these boundaries can effect differently. To do that we work with the bondaries in two ways; as a spatial sequence and a spatial gradation.

PROJECT SITE
In this project we analyse site conditions, formulate future scenarios by the use of filmic explorations and construct an urban intervention that responds to the current spatial qualities, while simultaneously setting out a potential trajectory for the future of Benzinøen.

We want to investigate a filmic methodology in relation to landscape architecture: study multi sensory imprints by using film as a tool in the design process. The aim is to capture more living and dynamic aspects of a site, such as movement, sound, vision, space and human-site interrelationships in order to explore Landscape Architectural design in new affective ways. As well as, to study how a film perspective can lead to new knowledge about spatial surroundings and the interwoven sensorial aspects of experience in the design process.
Method Research Define and present Benzinøen and its landscape in a one minute film, model and initial analysis. Movement Define a concept for recording the movement on site in film and a plan drawing. Supplement the presentation with a diagram of your concept for recording. Sound Define and present the soundscapes of Benzinøen in a film/sound collage and through 1:1 physical samples taken of site. Supplement with diagrams locating sounds and samples. Bodily gaze Define and present spatial typologies of Benzinøen in film and in a physical model of site. Supplement with diagrams of the various spatial typologies defined.

Concept of intervention Develop the concept of the intervention based on our filmic site explorations. We intend to enhance and/or change the spatial conditions through a prototype. The intervention will affect space, function and materials. Final proposal Formulate a final proposal that consists of a mix of one or more of the following media: Film (introduction, analysis), Intervention (prototype), plan drawing, zoom in, sections, model, 1:1 samples, etc.

Future scenario
From studying the emergence of Benzinøen we became aware that, through time, it has had the role of a post in a larger network. 1 7 1 3 : a s a s e a b a t t e r y, a s o n e o f s e v e r a l m i l i t a r y p o s t s . 1934- 2021: as an industrial port, that is part of a web of ships that come and go. A place that changes over time. 2050: Benzinøen would transition, as part of a network of shelters connected through Prøvestien, Den Blå Sti and Amarminoen.
