Editor’s Note In this issue, We look at two projects’ designs that have been influenced by the past and the history of its surroundings. The first is a public passageway created by Fletcher Studio titled Dogpatch Ropewalk, located in San Francisco in the Dogpatch historic district and was completed this year with a budget of $1.2 million. Taking inspiration from the site’s industrial past and connections to maritime history, it was designed with the aim of being an engaging public passageway that revives the historic pier.

The second project is a watchtower called Pompejus located in Fort de Roovere in Halsteren, West Brabant in the South of Netherlands which was named after the first commander of the fortress, Pompejus de Roovere. The tower looks out over the West Brabant Water Defence Line, the oldest part of the Zuiderwaterlinie running from Bergen op Zoom to Grave and has an open-air theatre and is an information point for tourists. See page 50.

From the past to the future, we take a look at a new development by renowned Japanese Architect Kenzo Tange - Metropolitan Investment Park – which is situated on the university campus of Jordan University of Science and Technology and is a mix and match of towers, greenways, investment, and urban renewal.

Another innovative design in Jordan is the Ayla Golf Academy & Club house which is currently under construction in Aqaba is inspired by the natural desert dunes and mountains of the surrounding desert, architectural heritage and ancient Bedouin traditions. The 40,000 square foot structure is part of the first phase of the approximately 17 square mile leisure development.

Al Barsha South Park

Municipality sets up Dubai’s first Smart Park in Al Barsha South

Dubai Municipality’s General Projects Department has completed the construction of Al Barsha South Park, which is considered to be the first Smart Park in Dubai, applied with modern sustainable technologies.

The project, constructed at a cost of Dhs15 million, is part of the efforts and strategy of Dubai Municipality to provide the residential areas of the city with parks to keep up with the urban expansion witnessed by the Emirate.

“The park was designed taking into consideration all the standards of sustainability and quality that are the basis of the design of parks, in addition to taking into account the category of the People of Determination in terms of choosing the appropriate games and ease of movement as well as the safety factor,” said Eng. Marwan Al Mohammed, Director of General Projects Department.

“The main entrance of the park includes a service building, which has toilets for males, females and the People of Determination. The park›s areas that are linked by pedestrian paths of various types, has shaded wooden seating and sign boards. The visitors and jogging lovers can practice their sports hobbies on the 800mtr long, 2.5mtr wide exterior jogging track around the park, equipped with fitness equipment,” he said.

“In addition, there is a bicycle track for children inside

the park wall, as well as two areas with children›s games for ages ranging from 2 to 12 years old with sunshades and rubber flooring for the protection of children in case of falling, also taking into account the games dedicated to the People of Determination. For the protection of children within the park, a fence was created to separate the adult sports area from the family section,” pointed out Al Mohammed.

Eng. Fatima Al Muhairi, Head of Horticulture and Beautification Projects, said that the 150 shaded parking spaces are installed with solar panels, which have a production capacity of more than 260 MW/hour of electricity per year.

She confirmed that for the first time in the Emirate of Dubai, the solar system, connected to the DEWA network, has been provided with a self-cleaning system, which increases the efficiency of power generation.

“The energy generated from these panels is used in the operation of the lighting systems in the park, the irrigation system and electrical loads in the service buildings in the park.

For the first time, Dubai Municipality has experimented with a smart control panel for the outdoor lighting systems of the park, adding a new look to the park, increasing the efficiency of lighting systems and contributing to the safety of the park visitors,” added Al Muhairi.

The UAE Park in China designed by Dubai Municipality

UAE Park in China to be open in December The UAE Park in China will be officially opened in December this year in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. Dubai Municipality, which is representing the UAE in Expo 2018 China, has participated in the design of the project that is coming up in an area of 1,700 square meters.

Eng. Marwan Al Mohammed, Director of General Projects Department at Dubai Municipality said that the park is being built with high professional standard and quality and an excellent creative design philosophy has been used to reflect the development process witnessed by the UAE over time.

He said that the visitor’s journey to the park begins through the Barajeel area, which reflects the UAE heritage of wind towers. “A replica of the logo of the upcoming Expo Dubai 2020 is placed in the center of this area. It is proposed to use virtual reality technology, which enables the visitor to follow the stages of the unique architectural development of the UAE,” he said.

“In order to introduce the visitors to the ancient Bedouin life a Bedouin Tent is located in the park with necessary heritage and aesthetic elements, such as pottery and Falaj (traditional irrigation canal), which is connected to a lake with a traditional wooden bridge to cross over to the other side, where the visitor reaches

a modern urban area, which reflects in a unique manner the process of development and the extraordinary urban growth witnessed by the UAE. In this area there will be an open space with Sunken Seating facilities, where the visitor will be able to enjoy the Skyline Fountain and the metal formations that form the most important architectural monuments of the UAE such as the Burj Khalifa and Sheikh Zayed Mosque,” Al Mohammed added.

He pointed out that the modern urban area also contains a mini outdoor theater with a large screen for the transmission of all national events of the UAE directly, such as the UAE National Day celebrations and other national events celebrated in the country.

The design of the park was fully prepared by an experienced professional team in the General Projects Department of Dubai Municipality. The team was keen to apply all quality standards and mastery on the unique designs of all sections and areas of the park. The organizers of Expo 2018 China praised the uniqueness of the project and expressed their wish to use it as a technical reference for their consultants during the preparation of technical reports.

The project comes within the framework of Dubai Municipality’s continuous endeavor to highlight the global urban development of the UAE and to emphasize its distinguished position in the architectural and engineering field by highlighting it as an inspiring and distinctive place in this field.

Students participate in Youth of Wetlands program

Harmoudi, who added further stated that Dubai Municipality is delighted to sponsor the COP 13 and host representatives from 169 countries who will participate in the event in October.

The Natural Resources Conservation Section of the Environment Department conducted an intensive awareness programme between 2nd February to 28th February educating the youth about the role of urban wetlands in making cities livable which was aimed at all levels of the primary and secondary schools as well as several universities. The participating educational institutes included Zayed University, Al Ghurair University, Dubai Gems Private School, Amity School Dubai, Our Own High School - Al Warqaa, Al Alfeya School, Primus Private School, Al Salam School, Kindergarten Starters School, Australian International School, Al Waha School, Al Ameen Private School, The Central School, Dubai, North American International School and American International School. The whole month of February was spent in raising the knowledge of students through lectures and field visits.

“Dubai Municipality has been celebrating World Wetlands Day for 15 years now, and we have seen tremendous level of interest from the youth on the protection of wetlands. This rings true as every year we witness masses of students who join hands together and participate in awareness activities conducted by Dubai Municipality. We feel proud of our youth in acting as environmental custodians and promoters of Dubai’s nature and wildlife. We hope, with such awareness activities, we understand more about our youth’s perception on wetlands and likewise create a sustainable urban future together,” said Aisha Al Murr Al Muhery, Head of Natural Resources Conservation Section.

Urban wetlands like Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary are critical part of UAE’s natural environment serving many purposes, which includes clean water provision, regulation of climate, protection from storms, source income and many more. Involving youth in protection of wetlands is a promising key to keep wetlands intact, she said.

On the 2nd of February 1971, the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. From then on, the date commemorates and celebrates World Wetlands Day.

Youth for Wetlands Dubai Municipality inspires 1000 students Dubai Municipality’s Environment Department inspired and motivated around 1000 students in the month of February as a part of World Wetlands Day 2018 celebrations by engaging 15 different schools and universities in interactive lectures and guided visits to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2018, “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future,” which highlights the role of urban wetlands for a sustainable future complements the year as UAE will host the 13th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP 13), sponsored by Dubai Municipality.

Eng. Alya Al Harmoudi, Director of Environment Department, stressed the significance of the theme as it affirms Dubai Municipality’s vision towards developing a happy and sustainable city. “Sustainable development is at the core of Dubai Municipality’s vision as it enables the residents of Dubai to live a happy and healthy life,” she said.

“Urban wetlands like Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary make cities livable by providing myriad benefits to its community and have been an integral part of our culture and heritage. The continuous existence of wetlands is important to humanity as much as it is to the wildlife and the environment,” said Al

Sharjah Urban Planning Council ensures excellence in Sharjah’s public realm By: SUPC Sharjah Urban Planning Council (SUPC) plays an important role in shaping a vibrant and prosperous future for the emirate, its residents and visitors. The council strives to enrich the lives of people in the emirate by supporting cultural traditions, highquality planning, brilliant design, clean environments, resource management and more.

SUPC was founded in 2006 to meet the requirements of a growing population in Sharjah and a burgeoning business community. Since its establishment, the Council has been keen to translate the transformational development drive witnessed by the Emirate of Sharjah into tangible success on the ground.

SUPC was given more powers and responsibilities in 2014 through an Emiri Decree. His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler

of Sharjah, revamped the SUPC and Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi was appointed as its Chairman.

Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Urban Planning Council, said, “Since 2014, the Council has been working on strategies to deliver high-quality urban design to improve the lives of people across the Emirate. Our aim is to ensure a better future for the inhabitants of Sharjah’s cities and suburbs.”

Sheikh Khalid said, “The Council has left no stone unturned to develop a comprehensive strategy for urban development and infrastructure projects that meet the ambitions of the Ruler of Sharjah and also the lifestyle expectations of the emirate’s residents. We are cooperating with different government departments to ensure the improvement of Sharjah’s standard of living.”

Vision and Mission SUPC’s mission is to make the people of Sharjah happier, by making their lives easier. The council seeks to manage change and growth by optimising Sharjah’s urban development within its own eco-system. Roles and Responsibilities SUPC oversees the development of specifications, policies, plans, manuals and guidelines for urban planning, infrastructure development and environmental protection. Also, it aims to establish a database for strategic studies on infrastructure, urban planning and environmental affairs to formulate regulations and make necessary regulatory decisions.

The council implements its plans and strategies in collaboration with all agencies concerned with urban planning, infrastructure development and environmental affairs. SUPC creates and evaluates strategic plans and provides solutions to ensure the effectiveness of mediumand long-term projects.

Groundbreaking Projects One of SUPC's main goals is to create an optimized urban environment in order to manage and support growth in Sharjah, while providing a foundation for the Emirate's rapid evolution.

In 2017, SUPC launched three mega projects with the aim that these projects will deliver opportunities for a more active and healthy Sharjah. The key projects include: Sharjah Beach Development Project, University City Road Enhancement Project, and Sharjah Cycling and Jogging Path Project.

It consists of a number of public squares, cycling routes, walking areas, dining zones, shaded areas, along with places for water sports activities along the beach. The beach development project also provides all necessary facilities required for visitors such as changing facilities, prayer places, and multiple parking areas for approximately 1,100 vehicles on both sides of the road. The project is part of the overall pursuit of quality projects with a sustainable strategic dimension that benefits multiple sectors and segments of society in Sharjah.

Sharjah Beach Development Project In November 2017, SUPC announced the Sharjah Beach Development Project after the approval of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. The project aims to develop world-class public amenities, enhance tourism infrastructure and improve the standard of living in the emirate.

The project is expected to attract more tourists and boost economic development. It will create a popular tourism and leisure destination by transforming the 3.3-kilometre area along the Sharjah Beach Road from the border of Ajman to the Sharjah Ladies Club into a world-class public space.

University City Road Enhancement Project This is another important project that will extend almost 3 kilometres, encompassing around 52,000 square metres of land. This facelift will bring the busy University City Road up to the best international standards. The civic project will be carried out in collaboration with the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority.

The project will transform the land in front of the existing businesses on University City Road from Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road to University City. The aim is to retrofit the area into a modern, well organised, usable and sustainable public realm.

The newly revamped public space will feature wide sidewalks, seating areas, landscaping with native flora species, and a bike path, all to aid exercise and outdoor activities for residents and enhance the space for business. High-quality materials will be used, marking a change in the way Sharjah implements future public infrastructure improvements.

International best practices will also be followed for drainage systems, roads, lighting, parking lots, and green areas.

Sharjah Cycling and Jogging Path Project The Sharjah Waterfront Bicycling and Jogging Path project will serve as the foundation of a multi-phase path network stretching across the city of Sharjah. The overall waterfront project will see the development of a continuous series of bicycle and jogging paths along the waterfront from Ajman to Dubai.

The first phase of the project includes the development of bike and jogging paths alongside the Al Majaz Waterfront. The initiative aims to improve the stature of Sharjah as an attractive destination to live and work and enhance the quality of life by giving new healthy transportation options.

Conclusion These projects not only serve as a testament to innovative planning being undertaken by the SUPC, but more importantly, will make a positive impact on businesses, residents health and overall quality of life. Â Working with the community, the SUPC is determined to use these developments as springboard to implement more such projects which will enhance health and happiness in Sharjah.

ONE STYLE: TWO DIFFERENT CONCEPTS A garden, as a space, must respond well to the particular needs of each owner, that is why it is very important to firstly, have a clear understanding of the client’s requirement.

Good planning, space distribution and accurate selection of vegetation are also essential elements for success.

The private gardens have a double function, they have the characteristic of being an extension of the house as a space to be inhabited, and they are also a space for contemplation, which we look at from inside the house, thus becoming its window towards the nature.

We analyse two gardens of similar characteristics, located in the same residential area and with similar geometry. A wall of middle height delimits by three parts a squared space, with a back door that opens to the common spaces, the perimeter is completed by one of the facades of the house, to which the main spaces of life are opened.

Following the same design principles for both gardens, the result in the formalization of the space has been the very opposite due to the needs of the clients. While in the first, space is segregated creating independent environments, in the second, the space is chosen to dilute the various uses, housing all in the same space, providing greater versatility to the whole. Intimacy versus amplitude. Definition versus versatility.

For our team, every small garden is a big challenge; we believe that being able to project a landscape on a smaller scale in a small space, is an exciting project.

Despite its small size, we have included in these gardens all the necessary elements of landscape composition to create an oasis in the middle of the desert. • FOUR SPACES, ONE GARDEN In this project we try to make the most of the space, building multiple zones and creating differentiated environments, taking advantage of the unevenness of the plot we have created different heights, forming angles, and giving great importance to perspectives.

The first impact from the street is a centenary olive tree as a sculpture, that already gives you and idea of what is happening inside. Stepping through a small door, we access the garden through the side of the house, walking along a tiled path among the gravel.

Once inside, we have an impressive perspective along with another solitaire centenary olive tree that gets all the attention. Around it, a sitting area has been designed, with two perspectives: the olive tree and the pool, to have a delightful feeling from any point.

A rectangular platform of lawn that builds an elegant green carpet, gives access to the pool, a turquoise blue sheet which contrasts with the bougainvillea that delimits the perimeter.

Again taking advantage of the unevenness, a stationary area has been created under the pergola, which can be accessed by going down two steps. A lemon tree brings freshness and a note of colour to the space for tranquillity, rest and friends gatherings.

The lawn area and the dining room are delimited by a mass of Penisetum, which move with the breeze giving a sense of calm to the dining room.

This area connects directly the garden with the kitchen exit, through the rear access door, and it is also composed of one more access to the lawn, completing the tour through the different scenarios in an interesting combination of elements.

The chosen vegetation is light, being the lemon tree and the olive trees the notes of rigidity of this garden.

Finally, this garden is built in different planes, which enhances the sense of depth.

I garden • GEOMETRY AND SIMPLICITY Each one of the spaces that compose this design, have its own identity. The objective was to give the space a sense of spaciousness with clear, precise and simple lines. Achieve a neat perception, creating two different environments, that was what our client Melisa, wanted.

In the refurbishment of the house the windows were enlarged, and it was right there, when we decided that the garden had to be integrated into the interior of the house, for us it was very important that the green and the light entered, hence owning the interior.

For this purpose, a sequence criterion was maintained toidentify the design intention easily.

The main access to the garden is through the house, therefore, we had to create an impact on the first visual shot.

A platform of ceramic floor, giving effect of wood, with exit from the kitchen and the living room, act as a dining room and a steering element between both areas, as well as a walkway that

connects you to the back door that you have to cross to get out of this calm area.

Two hundred-year-old olive trees are the sculptural points around which we must guide ourselves when walking through the garden. The dynamism is transmitted through a harmonious interaction between different textures and colours.

The olive trees that represent the Mediterranean, are covered by white stones that bring the serenity and calm of that sea. As a contrast and as the waves break on the shore, the gravel breaks into the beds of Leucophilum.

The sobriety of green always prevails. That is why in our design we opted for a chromatic game of different shades of green as their contrasts are sometimes as interesting as flowers.

Separated by a medium high wall of Leucophillum, with small green leaves matching the tone of the olive tree, we discover the living area, an area that invites to relaxation under the white pergola.

In the background and surrounding the whole area, we have taken advantage of an existing flower bed and we have created a green wall of Tabernaemontana divaricata, with large intense

green leaves as well as white flowers throughout the year, also combined with intense pink fuchsia bougainvillea.

The plantations are very geometric and have the prominence of two centenary olive trees, main points of all angles of vision of the garden.

The result has been a garden of clean strokes, in which green and fuchsia bring elegance, and flowers a subtle fragrance.

The design of both gardens was consistent with the criteria

that had been set in advance, we wanted a low maintenance and sustainable garden, which is well-structured and with a Mediterranean touch.

The vegetation has been used as a compositional and structuring element. The use of species has been carefully and selectively sought and adapted to each space adequately, while also the climate environment ensure the positive evolution and growth of the plantations in the future.

Regreening the city By: Jimena Martignoni The new Convention Center in Buenos Aires: green local perspectives.

The new Convention and Exhibition Center in Buenos Aires is the result of a national competition called in 2012 by the Ministry of Urban Development, a division of the City Government, and the Central Society of Architects (SCA). Awarded to architect Edgardo Minond and Estudio Bulla, the project is at final stages and the city has now a new park displaying large masses of native plants, the first of this kind.

The site is enclosed in the so called “museums ´corridor”, making part of an urban axis which connects some of the most important local museums, and connected at one side with the traditional building of the Faculty of Law of the Buenos Aires University and an existing large park, and to the opposite with another large traditional park. The wining project proposed to bury the building for the Convention Center and to create a large green roof, or “topographical roof”, which would be perceived as another park. Not a separate park but a piece of a larger

single green plane criss-crossed by a pedestrian integrating path system.

Lucía Ardissone, one of the partners of Estudio Bulla, says: “We wanted the three parks to be read as a single urban green piece; an ecology patch within the city […] A natural place where to serve our native fauna, attracting butterflies, birds, insects, especially being so close to the Ecological Preserve of the City of Buenos Aires.”

Today, with the new building, the access plaza and the green roof completed, it is fair to say that the original goal of the landscape designers is definitely achieved. Covering an area of 18,000m2, the green roof is established as some kind of an urban prairie, a landscape which evokes that of the local pampas,

bringing bucolic images into the city and creating a new image more nature-related. Undoubtedly, what makes this project all the more remarkable is the creation of a new kind of park within the city: in Buenos Aires, where the old traditional parks present countless clusters of large trees mostly non-native and extensive areas of lawn, the

incorporation of a place only planted with grasses and herbaceous extending for 240 meters means not only a novel image but especially a new kind of urban awareness for citizens. Planned in thick strips (a list of eleven species mostly native and a few widely adapted), the plants outline the path network. “The layout is clear” —explains Lucía Ardissone— “Tall strips [of plants] at central spaces and short strips at the edge of the footpaths.”

Golden hues given by the grasses and colorful patches made by native groundcovers and vines are what visitors find when walking the paths up and down. Rapidly taken in as a new jogging circuit, which begins in one of the existing parks and ends in the sunken access plaza of the Convention Center, the green roof’s pathway becomes also a new panorama trail opening onto the city. Formerly, the old convention center was built at street level and facing the wide avenue where most of the most important local museums are located. Now, with the semi-buried building and, on top, the green roof reaching a highest point of seven meters above street level, the park acts also as an urban veranda offering views to the city never possible to be enjoyed in the past.

The long and wide vistas to the traditional avenue, the distant city skyline and the large existing trees are now a bonus, or probably one of the most interesting assets of the new project.

Completing the design for the green roof, a series of artificial mounds dots the space along the paths. Finished with a gentle slope and with a diameter of an average of seven meters, these green pieces break the horizontality of the new park and the frank reference to the pampas, thus adding a more dynamic visual experience.

In order to reduce the loads on the main slab, the main structure of the mounds is made up of expanded polystyrene (EPS). On top, a layer of earth becomes the lawn growing medium.

Although the green roof, or new park, is completed and started to be comprehended by Buenos Aires’ inhabitants as a new (and now permanent) significant urban piece in a central area of the city, the project is yet to shine.

At the time the contractual documents for the project began, after the competition’s results were presented,

the City Government announced some important changes for the site’s proposal. Consequently, this meant some important design changes. Edgardo Minond explains: “After we started the set of contractual documentation, two main changes were made: one, the bus transfer center had to remain at its original location, in front of the new building [on the same avenue] and two, a new subway station would be incorporated into the site, with a large public lobby integrated with the access plaza of the Convention Center and the existing Faculty of Law. This meant big changes for us, but instead of taking it as a problem we saw it as an opportunity of a more profound urban commitment.”

The new architectural and urban proposal cohesively redesigned the access plaza in a way it is integrated with the levels of the subway station (now under construction and expected to be completed in 2018), truly changing the pedestrian arrival to the Convention Center both from the street level and from the green roof. Now, a 5,900m2-plaza, 3.25 meters below street level, appears as a main open gathering space before getting into the main building. Combining concrete and planted areas, this plaza is especially known for the three large Tipu trees (Tipuana tipu), native to Argentina, which were preserved at their original locations. Three massive concrete planters contain the trees and now are a strong landmark, or reference of the site.

The excavation works for the project were huge and the full extension of the site is bordered by a retaining wall system comprised by double concrete vertical structures.

Next final stages include the construction of the public parking area for 900 cars, underground, at the opposite side of the avenue and directly connected to the subway station and access plaza; and a green wall to cover up the building’s facade that come out from street level, in front of the avenue, and reach a highest point of seven meters.

In the end, the completion of the subway station and the so long-awaited connection between the three parks, will position the Convention Center and involved green areas as a turning-point urban event of this city.

Planting roots By: Shaaista Ahmed Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPR) is the Middle East’s largest integrated entertainment and leisure destination, located on Sheikh Zayed Road; Dubai. DPR opened to the public in December 2016 and has attracted over 2.5 million visitors from all over the globe. It has become a world renowned leisure facility comprising of six attractions: Motiongate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai, Legoland Dubai, Legoland Water Park, Riverland Dubai and Lapita Hotel Dubai. Six Flags thrill park is also in the pipeline and is expected to open to the public by 2020. The tourist attraction extends over a land area of 25 million square feet and has over 100 rides and attractions.

Riverland (Public Realm) landscaping constitutes all the common land areas between the theme parks and hotels, a total of approximately 55,000 square meters.

It is divided into four different zones: The French Village: 16th century town inspired by the village of Annacy; France, that features medieval architectural towers, a water wheel and cobble stone landscapes.

Boardwalk: Inspired from 1950’s America, the Boardwalk combines lots of neon with lofty structures and palm trees providing the perfect urban setting for live entertainment.

India Gate: Impressive artistic sculptures dot the landscape taking viewers on a mesmerizing journey through India. It also includes a lively plaza filled with plenty of acrobats, musicians and street food vendors.

The Peninsula: The 19th century architectural themed zone at the heart of Riverland is surrounded by a man-made river. The beautifully landscaped large outdoor piazza is a popular venue for concerts and festivals.

After careful consideration of the scope and potential challenges involved, the Riverland (Public Realm) deployment works were awarded as a design and build job to Proscape LLC. Their in house design team rose to the challenge and accommodated the changes required as per the site conditions. The scope of work for the project included soft and hard landscaping, irrigation, landscape lighting and the construction of Pergone boundary walls. The Pergone walls were specially imported from Germany, and are another feature of the project that was introduced for the first time in the UAE. Proscape LLC was also awarded the package for the advance procurement of plants for the entire DPR development.

This was a challenging and ambitious undertaking tried for the first time in the UAE and required the import of a large quantity of trees and palms from around the world. Consultants were flown to Spain, Italy and Thailand for their selection. Plants were also imported from India, Malaysia and China.

The landscape has almost 190 types of plant species including 6,195 palms; 24,730 trees; 2.62 million shrubs and ground cover, and grass sourced both locally and overseas.

The iconic grand Hero-Tree, Samanea Saman, was specially imported from Thailand and stands at a towering 10 meters with a girth of three meters. It is the largest tree to be successfully imported and planted for any landscaping project in the UAE.

Urban Renewal Metropolitan Investment Park By: Dr. Anne Gharaibeh and Eng. Mohamad Rahahleh Jordan University of Science and Technology

Metropolitan Investment Park is a mix and match of towers, greenways, investment, and urban renewal. An on campus master plan modified after renowned Japanese Architect Kenzo Tange has created an economic and sustainable campus that acts as an urban renewal project for the Northern region while providing an attraction for the metropolis.

It is situated on the university campus of Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), and consists of four dominant towers with attractive podium facades, overlooking the vast plains of Horan. It is the futuristic vision of the Northern Region of Jordan to come, where the

polycentric planning strategy leads a policy of sustainable growth through imbedding the on-campus metropolitan sub-centre to serve local and regional demands. Carefully situated along the Ramtha-Amman highway, the master plan is an opportunity for investment and an economic development. This project was awarded the first rank in urban design in the fall of 2018 at the College of Architecture and Design. In addition, the university is currently considering the implementation of the project. The Project won a $10,000 award from the University for commencing the conceptual design.

The Metropolitan Investment Park Now the campus is required to provide services to the region besides educational and medical services. Being at an intermediate location between the Northern Cities of Irbid, Mafraq, Ramtha and Jerash, the campus is foreseen as a prospect location for economic investment. With this in mind, the Metropolitan Investment Park is created to pertain to the regional and local demands.

The plausible economic structure is a mysterious factor when investing regionally. The acquaintance with facility area, target categories and the annual revenues, are the major questions for any investment development. Accordingly, the urban designers, used Gravity Model approach for allocating, assessing and estimating the size of metropolitan sub-centre “Metropolitan Investment Park�

The Campus In 1986, the construction on the main university campus was designed by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange. His master plan provided the university buildings and services that followed a module derived from environmental conditions.

The semi-arid environment of the region and the requirements of the campus coached the orientation, buildings footprint, open spaces, zoning and the environmental sustainability of the place. Tange chose a 45 degree angle with the North as an optimal orientation for the buildings to maintain a livable indoor environment for students and staff. The plan developed on series of courtyards that carry on throughout the campus providing a sophisticated layout. After more than 30 years, the campus grew in size and the surrounding population is almost decupled in the north of Jordan.

On a 255,000 m2site, the Metropolitan Investment Park is located at the university campus on Ramtha-Amman highway. JUST Metropolitan Investment Park is an integrated development and a destination for JUST faculty and students, regional residents and international visitors. It is a job opportunity for many workers, consultants, professionals and entrepreneurs.

The development targets regional needs such as shopping, recreation and services. In addition to environmental needs. The 176,000 m2 regional mall, includes food courts, study cafes, retail shops, outlet stores, a recreation center with gym, children museum, cinema, games, and other additional services that attract and entertain visitors.

The Greenway The project promotes healthy outdoor spaces with its 770m open air long-linear greenway. It promises the visitors to offer a unique circulation experience that breaks through all facilities, with a special greenway instead of a typical indoor circulation.

Here, the greenway, integrates the need for paved pathway and circulation with the existing water stream by transforming it into a green livable path. This sustainable environment is connected to the on-campus ecological corridor which is currently a habitat for wildlife enhancing the human-environment bond. The greenway, situated to fit all users’ circulation needs, through offering a paved pathway for walking with seating that complements the landscape. It also gives the opportunity for users to have the experience of biking in a safe and continuous pathway. Following alongside the greenway, planting and trees frame the seating areas while affording shades and beautiful landscape for users’ relaxation and joyfulness.

Accordingly, the urban designers formed a new proposed module that serves the concept of encouraging visitors to be at outdoor spaces through arranging the facilities masses footprint at 7O degree to the north for a better shaded outdoor environment. Thus, the outdoor greenway, allows JUST Metropolitan Investment Park to be environmentally sustainable, because a lot of energy will be saved since we will not need air-conditioning along the main walkways.

URBAN RENEWAL The urban designers of JUST Metropolitan Investment Park, decided to restrict the development’s footprint and expand vertically, leaving more spaces for recreation with lifestyle facilities and more sustainable environments for agricultural uses. This resulted in the design of four dominant 34 story towers with harmonious footprint and design layout. The project entertains a contradictory height among the context to create an attractive destination and a dominant presence.

The arrangement and height of the towers promises users panoramic views to JUST campus, its lake, and Irbid city silhouette. The three office towers were identified and served by an open plaza containing shaded settings and retail shops all around to entertain the users. Whereas the fourth tower is a hotel that serves the campus and region located near to the amazing lake.

By: David Fletcher Located at the south-eastern corner of the Dogpatch historic district in San Francisco is the Dogpatch Ropewalk, completed in 2018 with a budget of $1.2 million. An engaging public passageway, it functions as a large-scale green infrastructure as well as an outdoor museum to the site’s industrial maritime history.

The project is situated on a site that once mediated the boundary between land and bay over 1.2 acres and was once home to the Tubbs Cordage Company, a maritime ropemaking factory whose pier extended far out into the waters of the San Francisco Bay. Taking inspiration from the site’s industrial past and connections to maritime history, Fletcher Studio designed an engaging public passageway that revives the historic pier and offers the public opportunities to engage with the history of Tubbs Cordage.

The design consists of an elevated boardwalk, which floats over a constructed bioretention wetland and connects two public plazas. These plazas feature an outdoor museum, interactive art, and a variety of custom designed furnishings. There are many layers of contemporary history to experience such as the intersection of Third and 23rd streets. Here, the uncharacteristic angle of historic homes hint at the site’s heritage, the location of the Tubbs Cordage Company Ropewalk, whose slanted pier once pierced the traditionally gridded fabric of the neighbourhood, extending more than one-thousand feet into the Bay, and connecting the ropemaking factory with its maritime customers.

The factory operated from 1856 to 1963 but was leveled in the late 70s to accommodate Muni’s “John M. Woods Motor Coach Centre,” part of a community transition away from maritime industry. Today, no remnants of the building exist. The few warehouses and factories that remain throughout the community are quickly being lost to gentrification, as San Francisco seeks to meet the city’s housing shortage. As a tribute to this important chapter of Dogpatch industrial heritage, the Dogpatch Ropewalk was designed to evoke the aura of the historic pier and to use the landscape to tell the story of maritime industry in the Dogpatch community.

In the initial phases of the design process, research showed that the original shoreline of the bay fell halfway through the existing site. This fascinating discovery inspired the cardinal elements of the Midblock Passage design. The throughway is divided into three zones (water, marsh and shore) all of which exhibit distinct paving, planting and atmospheric qualities.

The water plaza is closest to the neighbourhood’s arterial roadway, Third Street, and is the most abstract and ethereal of the three zones. Here, ghosts of the past inspire the unusual form of a family of nomads, a collection of sculptural steel benches, designed by Fletcher Studio and fabricated by Chambers Art & Design in Oakland.

Adjacent to these benches, an interactive art installation - the ‘Rope-Tying Station’ - encourages passerbys to engage first hand with the heritage of the site.

The marsh zone draws visitors from the activity of the water plaza through the site to the more contemplative shore plaza. In the marsh zone, the main feature is an elevated wood and steel boardwalk that harkens back to the original Tubbs Cordage pier. The boardwalk is suspended over thick planting that is designed to collect and retain rainwater suggesting the marsh that originally covered this part of the shoreline. The marsh also functions as a bioretention area, collecting the rainwater for the entire site and using the planting to filter pollutants and slow the water’s release into the sewer system.

The shore zone is the most concrete in its significance and symbolism, utilizing above-grade transformers as a surface for historic image collages and original imagery of the Tubbs Cordage Factory and Ropewalk. This permanent public exhibition surrounds a public plaza with seating and a massive corten steel community table designed by Fletcher

Studio to evoke the pier that used to jut into the bay.

This remarkable space was made possible by the collaboration between the designers at Fletcher Studio, the developer Avant Housing and contractor Devcon Construction Incorporated, with the invaluable historical insight provided by The Potrero Hill Archives Project, Peter Linenthal, Steven Fidel Herraiz and Glenn Lym.

Desert Oasis By: Oppenheim Architecture + Design The innovative yet organic design for the Ayla Golf Academy & Club house is inspired by the natural desert dunes and mountains of the surrounding desert, architectural heritage and ancient Bedouin traditions. The 40,000 square foot structure is part of the first phase of the approximately 17 square mile leisure development currently under construction in Aqaba, Jordan. Its distinct architectural form which establishes a unique connection with nature by capturing the elemental, vibrant beauty of the rolling desert landscape is shaped by a massive concrete shell that precisely drapes over the programmed areas enveloping the interior and exterior walls of each volume in concrete and locally sourced additives to achieve a final shell finish, maintaining the raw, un-adorned look that stays true to its context and inspiration.

I watchtower

History in the making Pompejus is a watchtower on Fort de Roovere in Halsteren, West Brabant in the South of Netherlands and named after the first commander of the fortress, Pompejus de Roovere.

The tower looks out over the West Brabant Water Defence Line, the oldest part of the Zuiderwaterlinie running from Bergen op Zoom to Grave and has an open-air theatre and is an information point for tourists.

History The West Brabantse Water Defence Line was built in 1627 by the States of Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland to protect the important shipping route from Middelburg to Dordrecht against attacks by the Spaniards and the French. The line included the cities of Bergen onZoom and Steenbergen and a number of forts, including the main fort, Fort deRoovere and was the first landscape defensive work in which inundation was deployed as a defence strategy.

In the course of the centuries the line has been under fire several times, among other things against the Austrians, French and Spanish. In the beginning of the 18th century the water line became more important and was thoroughly strengthened by the famous fortress builder Menno vanCoehoorn.

Fortress the Roovere was reinforced and increased and several preliminary works were carried out.

I watchtower Design The edge of the fortress on which Pompejus stands is directed at the enemy. The tower is positioned exactly on that corner. By mirroring up the sides of the fort, a sharp shape is created which leans forward over the moat. As a result, it is closed on the outside, and open at the fort side. In 1747 the line and the city fell under the siege of the French. In the 19th century the line was strategically depreciated. It disappeared in some places; in others the forts were excavated. From 2010 onwards, the line started to be restored and developed for recreation. Forests have been taken from the forts, and canals are restored.

Landscape The line uses very subtle altitude differences in the landscape which is possible because it is located on the edge of the BrabantseWal, the edge of the deck sand in Brabant. The low parts can be inundated, and on the higher areas. Therefore on the defensive weak parts fortified towns and forts were built. These fortresses are sand forts and were connected to each other with ‘Linie dikes’.

Visually the forts were connected; you could look from one fortress to another. Fort the Roovere was a central point in the landscape. The separation of fresh water and salt water inundation was here. It was the middle of the defence line, so from the fortress you could see towards Bergen op Zoom and in the direction of Steenbergen. This is no longer possible in the current landscape, which is why the plan was developed to create a watch tower to make that possible again.

surrounding area over the trees, the tower must be 25 meters high above the fortress. The fortress itself rises nine metres above the landscape, Pompejus literally towers 34 metres above his surroundings. From the top you can look 20 kilometres far in all directions and you can see the entire WestBrabant Water Defence Line.

The facade is designed according to the principle of the Voronoi diagram, a mathematical design principle in which we used the triangles of the steel construction in order to make it possible to have windows and openings in the façade. Secondly the facade can be divided into elements to be prefabricated and transported, and add an additional layer to the façade to break the dominance of the triangular steel structure.

Technology and material In order to make the building of Pompejus manageable for everyone, we have used the File-to-Factory principle. No drawings have been made for the construction, only a 3D model is used. This model has been directly converted into ‘scripts’ for a Tekla model for the steel manufacturer and in machine language for CNC milling machines of the carpentry factory. This resulted in kind of Ikea-Billy cabinet packs in which all of the produced elements were encoded and could be assembled relatively easily.

These packages were also scripted in such a way that from the 3D model also automatically the assembly drawings were provided.

The construction consists of a hybrid steel-wood construction, in which the main structure consists of galvanized steel, and the sub-structure, façade elements, stairways and stairs are made of timber. The wood used is Accoya. The information space is thermally isolated and consists of a timber frame construction.

Social system In order to make this project possible, a community has grown in Bergen op Zoom who participated in the creation of Pompejus. For example, crowdfunding has been used to let people sponsor Pompejus, companies have sponsored parts of construction such as transport or wood, schools have provided interns, but also organizations have provided interns and volunteers.

People who want to use the Pompejus and fort the Roovere in the future have been active to help the development. The aim was to make Pompejus ‘our tower’ and to connect with the residents of the surrounding area. This has been successful not only because the tower has been built, but above all because there is already an entire organisation to program the fort with events and it will be properly programmed and managed in the coming years.
