Improves movements; reduces complaints of joint pain by 40%.

Dubai Municipality to continue Senior Citizen Gardens initiative Dubai Municipality has announced that it will continue to implement the community initiative “Senior Citizen Gardens” by creating more home gardens in 15 homes for senior citizens during 2019 meeting the criteria set for such gardens as the initiative has proved successful in achieving the positive impact on the health of senior citizens by their happiness and integration into society through the establishment of agricultural gardens inside their homes, which motivate them for movement and productivity.

The Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai monitored the health and psychological condition of the beneficiaries of the initiative to measure their benefit and showed a marked improvement in their movement abilities and mental state. The initiative also contributed to reducing the proportion of complaints of joint pain by 40%.

The move is in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the vision of Dubai Municipality to build a happy and sustainable city and its strategy of community participation and effective interaction and the sustainability of city environment.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality said: “Based on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on the care and attention towards senior citizens in honor of this influential category of people in the community, Dubai Municipality, in cooperation with CDA, is committed to provide all kinds of support to their satisfaction

and happiness by designing and implementing home gardens for senior citizens free of charge.”

“We, at Dubai Municipality, will continue to provide support to this group and we will enhance community service to all other groups to achieve the Municipality’s vision of building a happy and sustainable city,” he added.

“The initiative encourages senior citizens to move and produce through the practice of farming and harvesting, and help them to engage their leisure time by taking care of plants planted in their gardens throughout the year, including palm trees and different flowers, and also motivate them to perform motor activities that improve their morale,” Al Suwaidi pointed out.

Twisted Concrete Bench “Twisted Concrete Bench” is designed for indoor and outdoor spaces.

The bench’s two straight ends are contrasted by a “Twist”, which creates the support from one side, guides the form, and provides a smooth seating for up to three, shaping the furniture piece into a fluid landscape, expressing softness, and a sense of movement.

Concrete is known for its solidity, strength and durability, often used to create large monolithic forms. Using concrete as material to stabilize the shape, the challenge of this project was the creation of the mold, especially for the twisting part. The process was facilitated using a 3-dimensional modeling software that split the mold into two. After that, a CNC-machine was used to cut out the plywood pieces that constructed the mold for the concrete. Once the concrete hardened, it was possible for the piece to be removed from the mold, was sanded three times, and cured for 7 days. This helps the piece to reinforce, harden and bond with internal materials.

The Designer likes to create pieces where it is NOT easy to know what time they come from. If you use plastic, acrylic, resin, then you know it is from the 1970s, 80s, 90s. Concrete is a timeless material and the ocean is timeless as well.

This almost surreal bench uses cutting edge technology to create a powerful contrast between the hard concrete piece and the soft wavy twist of its shape. This contrast tricks the viewer into thinking of a simpler material to mold. “Twisted Concrete Bench” inspires further original uses of concrete, the material already being a widely appreciated one in the current interior and exterior trends.

Bus shelter with retail outlet, constructed using used shipping container powered Dubai South, Identified as the emirate’s flagship urban project, is an emerging 145 sq. km. master-planned city. It is home to the world’s largest airport in the making, the Al Maktoum International Airport and is host landmark events such as World Expo 2020 and the Dubai Airshow.

The client M/s. Dubai South wanted to provide best amenities to the visitors and the people working in the existing community.

One such requirement was set to provide bus shelters that are functional, aesthetically appealing & sustainable at the Logistic zone & in the vicinity of Head Quarter Building. It had to be modular yet have capacity to provide shelter to maximum passengers at peak time like starting & leaving hours of office. The concept extended by client was to build the bus shelter using modified used shipping containers 20ft & 40ft with an extended shade structure attached to the bus shelter .

M/s. HAS Engineering LLC working in conjunction with Dubai south various departments, the design concept was further streamlined and made to meet all preset parameters based on site conditions.

Challenge: The major challenge we had was the absence of power utility at proposed locations and creating new provisions for utility was not easy for all locations due to distance from the source and proposed area of placement . Solar power was considered as an option to meet this requirement. The design was done to incorporate solar panels at the roof top and power the AC and at same time a set of panels was designated to recharge the battery. For 40 ft bus shelter, the container internal layout was set to have bus waiting space, a retail space & an access space.

Result: This is the first fully functional solar powered bus shelter in UAE that has been. From the preliminary design stage it had been conceptualized as solar enabled, therefore the locations were analyzed to ensure

maximum running time, the orientation & angle of panels along with mounting panels were designed to have be highly efficient in terms of solar impact . Controller & battery compartments with external access were provided to keep the battery, chargers, controllers etc isolated from public realm space giving maximum holding space without hindrance inside the shelter and further making it easy to maintain.

Further amenities like bike rack, litter bins had been provided . The detailing was done to the extent that custom made seating benches were fabricated & installed. The external shade structures are internally lined with PPGI skin sand which panel to reduce the heat below the waiting area. For 40ft modified Bus Shelter additional retail space was provided to set up a Mini Mart with the option of an opening to enable quick grab & go.

This project has further environment friendly credential as its emphasis the concepts of REUSE (Reusing used shipping containers) RECYCLE (over 80 % of the materials used are recyclable) REDUCE ( by making use of solar energy reducing or eliminating the use of conventional fossil fuel energy ) .

Gearing up for the Future of Facades Summit at the Windows, Doors & Facades Event 2019 (24-26 September, Dubai World Trade Centre), three leading facades experts share their views on the industry’s present and future.

Facades are what we first see in any building. More than just shaping our city’s look, building envelops have a tremendous impact on the livability of our homes and offices, as well as on their energy consumption.

With technology developing faster than ever, facades are undergoing an unprecedented transformation today.

Ahead of their participation to the Future of Facades Summit in Dubai, Benjamin Piper, the Partner and Design Principal at Killa Design, Micha Pawelka, the Managing Director of Priedemann, and Benjamin Beer, the Head of Façades at Ramboll, discuss current trends and promising technologies that are going to revolutionize our buildings.

Top experts unveil the future of buildings’ facades in the region

Materials’ science and mechanical systems drive the change In the facades sector, Piper points out, there’s usually a subtle conflict between architects, who look for the clearest glass, the largest openings, and the best color rendition, and the engineers, who are more concerned with the reduction of the energy load on the building.

Today, thanks to advancements in the materials’ science, the industry is able to meet both the visual performance and the energy performance requirements simultaneously.

“We can finally have incredibly clear glass with quality visual rendering color that also meets the energy performance standards mandated by the authorities,” Piper says.

Pawelka agrees: “Material-wise, we see things getting smart.

We have electrochromic glass, the performance of the glass is getting switchable, and prices of these materials are also getting more affordable.”

Probably the most eye-catching change, however, comes from the facades’ architectural design, which is becoming more and more complex.

“Architects want to build landmark buildings that have a ‘wow effect’, and this means that buildings are more complicated in terms of geometry and materials,” states Beer.

“These curved, twisted, double curved, free form shapes, or blob shape complex facades are amazing and challenging at the same time. They require a lot of research and development to be realised cost-effectively.”

As a consequence, some of the most interesting technologies that are emerging focus on how facades respond to sunlight, wind, and other dynamic entities. There are two major types of dynamic, responsive facades, Piper explains.

“The first type is the mechanical façade system that uses moving parts, such as moving louvers or external blinds, to help improve the

energy performance of the façade. The second type is the solid-state façade system, which uses material technology to respond to the exposure of a façade, embedding for example liquid crystals.

“I think that both these system types offer tremendous opportunities. They also respond to the current requirement for visual clarity and openness while protecting buildings from the energy of the Sun, and providing acoustic comfort to the occupants.”

Grander, but also smarter “Digitalization has already changed the way we book a car, or we do our shopping. It will soon change the way our façade industry is acting too,” Pawelka forecasts.

Big data is a massive trend that will have a major impact on the building envelopes. “Facades are getting smart: more and more, our building envelops will collect, carry and provide information,” Pawelka says. “Digitalization will reach the facades industry and will massively change the way we design and execute facades systems in the future.”

Beer confirms: “Going forward, we will have smarter facades reacting to the external environment, featuring switch rubber glazing and double skinned facade systems with active shading.”

Sustainability: a challenging opportunity Facades are key to reducing the energy consumption of the buildings.

According to Beer, “Today there’s a strong push to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings, fostering a more sustainable society.”

As Pawelka points out, however, sustainability comes with upfront costs, which are somehow slowing down its diffusion in the Middle East’s construction sector.

Beer agrees: “Sustainability can be quite challenging in the Middle East because of the region’s harsh climate and competitiveness in the construction market. If on the one hand, we aim to design and create more energy-efficient buildings with very low cooling load demands, on the other hand, we must ensure that the clients meet their budget targets.”

The solution, Beer states, is to think to sustainability as an evolution more than a revolution. “It is crucial to educate industry stakeholders about how small steps can actually make our buildings more energy efficient and sustainable.

“Currently, we see quite a lot of new technologies emerging in the market to make building facades more sustainable. Active facade components, like active shading and glazing, are some of the most promising innovations.”

“At Ramboll,” Beer continues, “we are also in close contact with energy suppliers and glass suppliers to develop solar control coatings. It is crucial to push the industry to develop and create better quality glazing and design for human beings.

“We always bear in mind that we spend most of our time indoors, and it’s therefore very important to understand how the glass selection affects the quality of the light filtering through the facade, and what impact it finally has on the building’s occupants.”

Beer, Piper and Pawelka are among the key speakers of the “Future of Facades Summit” by Windows, Doors & Facades Event (WDF), Middle East’s largest industry dedicated event. Taking place on September 24 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the free-toattend summit will bring together top industry experts to discuss the future of facades in the region.

Piper says: “Professionals attending the Future of Facades Summit will gain useful insights into the latest technologies and methodologies.

More than that, the conversations that the event will spur, will offer

a unique opportunity to understand our industry and build valuable connections with peers, consultants and suppliers.

“The work that we do as architects is very much based on keeping abreast of technological developments and trends - that’s why I personally love attending WDF’s Summit: it reinvigorates the process of design providing new ideas and opens new possibilities,” he adds.

WDF will also offer a wide education agenda including free CPDcertified workshops on September 25 and 26, the “Facades Seminar Series”, uncovering groundbreaking concepts on building design, BIM, fire and life safety, and glass technologies.

Over 300 exhibiting brands will showcase their products at WDF and the co-located Gulf Glass, the region’s largest glass event. Leading brands including Schuco, Orgadata, Gutmann, Elumatec, Reynaers, SaintGobain Vetrotech, Hueck, Emmegi, and MJ Metal already confirmed their participation.

“One of the fantastic aspects of attending the event is that, as an architect, you get the opportunity to physically touch the products and systems,” says Piper. “This physical contact is what really gives you the confidence to specify and make recommendations for a project.”

According to Beer, “The facade industry is pushing many new products on the market, and the whole sector evolves quickly in response to client demands. It is therefore very important to attend the event and discover these new products.

“WDF is also an excellent opportunity to meet people and network.

Most of the facade professionals are at the event. For me, WDF is a sort of family gathering, where all the glass suppliers, facade system suppliers, architects, and consultants come together,” he concludes.

Convenience of a Seeded Product As a seeded variety, Pure Dynasty offers convenience over stolons for the landscaping market. Polyclean maintains a stock of Pure Dynasty in the region for easy access and ondemand planting. Germination can be as fast as four to five days, and establishment is quicker than previous paspalum varieties and other turfgrass species. While establishment times vary depending on growing conditions, full growin has been attained on some projects as quickly as seven weeks. Pure Dynasty features a patented water absorbent coating that serves to enhance establishment and survivability by providing special nutrients and water absorption capabilities to the seedling while helping to guard against environmental pressures.

Another advantage of a seeded product is the ability to interseed. Existing turf areas that are no longer performing to standards can be interseeded with Pure Dynasty for turf conversion without extreme labor requirements or downtime. Interseeding also allows for easy repair of bare or worn areas of turf and boosts density.

Seeding rates vary depending on the process and growin goals. While rates for interseeding can be much lower, the recommended seeding rates for standard planting is 4.5 to 15 grams per square meter of coated seed.

When planting, ensure seed to soil contact. Spreaders specifically designed for seed are recommended. The surface should be lightly raked and then gently rolled after seeding. To avoid decreased germination rates, take caution not to bury the seed. If the planting area is prone to erosion or excessive soil movement, consider hydroseeding.

Preparation, Establishment, and Grow-In Establishment of Pure Dynasty should begin with soil and water tests. Irrigation testing, also before planting, is highly recommended to ensure that a dependable watering system is available for grow-in.

Seed storage is important. Until ready to plant, store Pure Dynasty in a dry, air-conditioned place. Poor storage conditions can affect germination.

Whether interseeding or establishing a new seedbed, the area to be planted should be firm and smooth.

Depending on local regulations and planting method, non-selective herbicides or fumigation may be used for removing undesirable grasses. A pre-plant fertilizer should be applied based on the results of the initial soil test.

Irrigation during establishment is critical. While Pure Dynasty is extremely salt tolerant, establishment of the seed requires clean water. During this period, it is strongly recommended to irrigate with water measuring less than 2000 ppm TDS. The seedbed should be kept moist with frequent irrigation throughout the day during germination; however, avoid over-saturating the soil as seed movement can occur.

The first mowing for most landscaping applications is recommended when the grass reaches the height of about 2.5 centimetres. Scalping can occur if the first mowing is delayed much further. After the first mowing, regular mowing will encourage lateral growth and better turf coverage. Ensure mower blades or reels are sharp, and use solid rollers.

During the first few weeks of plant development, little, if any, nitrogen is required. Fertilization and other amendments can begin after the first three weeks and should be guided by the initial soil and water test.

Versatility of Pure Dynasty for Landscaping Pure Dynasty is the turfgrass solution for any landscaping application. The variety is suitable for both commercial and residential landscaping. Project Spotlights Rashid Stadium in Dubai – home to Al Ahli Football Club and host venue for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup David Ball, Managing Director of SIS Pitches Middle East, chose Pure Dynasty Seeded Paspalum for Al Ahli’s Rashid Stadium pitch. Purity, heat and salt tolerance, and strength for sports were influencing factors in the decision. In preparation of planting, the surface was laser graded, and 10 percent peat was added to the profile. With a seeding rate of 14 grams per square metre, germination occurred in seven days. Full coverage was achieved in seven weeks with the first matches played on the new turf in nine weeks.

Dubai Hills Golf Club – a European Golf Design project completed in late 2018, recent host of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic Shootout and the Troon Series Dubai Open Ben Corby, Senior Agronomist of the landscape maintenance division of Desert Group, has experience with Pure Dynasty on multiple projects. A beacon of Riyadh’s urbanism A new metro station in downtown Riyadh is set to become a symbol of the city’s urban regeneration By: Snohetta The Qasr Al Hokm Downtown Metro Station will become an icon for the renaissance of the city of Riyadh.

Building upon the principles of sustainability, the station highlights a new consciousness of this generation, to build a future that recognizes the value of natural resources and its important role in urban regeneration,

The Downtown Metro station is designed as an urban plaza with a large canopy providing shade to the surrounding public spaces and channeling daylight into the train station below ground. The polished stainless steel canopy functions as a landmark signaling the station’s entrance.

The Metro Station’s design is sustainable on multiple levels – environmentally sustainable in providing energy, water conservation, daylight harvesting, natural shading and ventilation; economically sustainable by providing an efficient public transport hub in a densely populated city to reduce traffic congestion, and above

all socially sustainable, providing a vibrant public space for all citizens of Riyadh to enjoy.

Through the reflective canopy, the levels of the metro are visually linked, like a periscope, reflecting the outside inwards and the inside outward. The canopy rests on a large inclined wall, defining an exterior void which carries

indirect light down, whilst acting as a unifying element and reference space in the building. The two metro lines span through this void space in glazed tubes, giving them a strong presence, clarity and sense of wayfinding.

The plaza area will be treated as a homogenous limestone surface, stretching to the very edge of the site, clearly identifying the whole space as a public, pedestrian space. The plaza is given a human scale through the planting of palm trees in a linear pattern following the direction of the mosque and Mecca.

The planting pattern of the palm trees is to be dense, providing shadow to the plaza itself. Irrigation channels delineate the plaza floor and serve as a flood-and-drain watering system for the trees, as well as a subtle water feature throughout the day. The atrium features an accessible garden at the bottom, an unexpected element in the underground

station. The garden is accessed from the Red line platform and the Blue line platform, and allows passengers to wait for their train whilst seated in the shaded lush garden. The inside surface of the canopy is to be covered with a daylight harvesting system. Based on a fiber optic system, daylight is channeled to light fittings in the below-grade levels. In this manner lighting can be maintained during the day time without using energy and without bringing heat into the building.

The harbour-side precinct is now home to the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) comprising three exceptional new venues, a luxury hotel – and a new mixed-use neighbourhood is on the way.

Working closely with iNSW and Lendlease, HASSELL delivered the urban design framework for the entire 20-hectare precinct and designed Darling Harbour’s public realm to better connect the city and offer new places for people to gather, relax and play.

People were firmly at the heart of our design process for remaking Darling Harbour, says Angus Bruce, HASSELL Principal and Head of Landscape Architecture.

“Our clients envisaged a high-quality, open and flexible public realm that allows for the greatest variety of both casual uses and organised events. They wanted a place full of vibrant spaces that heighten the experience of visitors to the venues, while presenting as attractions in their own right,” Angus said.

By reinvigorating parklands, integrating landscapes and open space and incorporating water features, public artworks, plazas and event spaces, HASSELL has created opportunities for events and activities as varied as open-air concerts, circus events, market stalls and busking – and simple pleasures like splashing in shallow pools.

Improved pedestrian, cycle and public transport connections now make it easier for people to access the precinct’s previously disconnected immediate neighbourhoods, the harbour and the Sydney city centre.

An integrated design amplifies the spaces and experiences Darling Harbour’s public realm was delivered through a close, interdisciplinary collaboration. This approach enabled an elegant design that integrates the public landscape and customised artworks with the architecture – maximising the public open space, cultural features, connectivity and views.

All three ICC Sydney buildings are united through their continuous landscape base, terraces and materials.

The landscape blends seamlessly with the surrounds and encourages permeability of the wider area. It integrates with the ICC Sydney Exhibition building façade to deliver a terraced landscape, elevated event deck and expansive native grassland green roof, connected by pathways and platforms that overlook the precinct.

I TRANSFORMATION Creating an authentic, captivating and sustainable public place By creating more inclusive and engaging new places and improving existing locations, Darling Harbour’s appeal has increased with locals and visitors alike – generating ongoing social, economic and environmental benefits for Sydney.

The transformation project has delivered: A dynamic events destination with three major public venues and Tumbalong Park as a high-capacity, open-air event space – now 40 per cent bigger and complete with a stage, event screen and improved lighting.

A connected precinct with an enhanced network of lanes and streets, including The Boulevard – a 680m-long, Eucalypt-lined promenade that anchors the entire site and extends the pedestrian connections between Central Station and Cockle Bay. More diverse public experiences in engaging new urban spaces, such as the Chinese Garden Plaza – a forecourt to the existing Chinese Garden of Friendship with shallow water pools for children’s play that switch off to make way for market and event day installations.

A greener harbour with 650 new trees and 9,000sqm of additional green space, improving amenity and habitat through the extensive use of native species. Crepe myrtle has also been used as a nod to neighbouring Chinatown.

A distinctly ‘Sydney’ experience. The stories of

Darling Harbour come alive through a wide range of curated artworks and interpretative landscape features inspired by the site’s history and ecology.

Sculptures and audio-visual installations, including a 600sqm mural of indigenous flora embedded in the walls of the terraced landscape, provide new points of fun and intrigue. And active water fountains, including the renovated Woodward Fountain, celebrate the waterfront location.

“Both large-scale ‘big bang’ and smaller fine-grain artworks were integrated from the beginning of the design development following an extensive curation process,” says Angus.

“We were looking for works that allowed for layers of exploration and imagination. Each piece is truly unique, with some telling stories both literal and ephemeral of Darling Harbour’s rich history, and others stretching your mind to scales beyond that of the site and place,” he said.

The transformation project also embraces the City of Sydney’s wider sustainability goals for open spaces through integrated WSUD solutions, green spaces and improved walkability. It has delivered 30 per cent more public space for Sydney’s inner-city, and has received a 6 Star Green Star Communities rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

The revitalised public realm is turning Darling Harbour into one of the world’s best places to live, learn, meet and be entertained – a place that people want to return to, time and again.

TWO BECOME ONE Growing together: An architects vision to connect Milan’s football clubs By: RRC Studio Architects

We strongly believe that we can build the new stadium next to the Meazza Stadium, on the current parking lots near the M5 San Siro Stadio subway.

The vision to place a new structure in the former hippodrome of the trot is no longer a reality after the area was sold by Snai, to the real estate group Hines, which is proceeding with a residential development of the lot.

Our idea was to succeed, with a careful, coherent and environmentally friendly design, to make the future system coexist with the current stadium, through a complex/square that connects and joins the two sports structures to a raised level, place of meeting and entertainment.

The commercial area, complete with shops, restaurants, hotels, offices, entertainment, headquarters of the teams ande museums, is located below the plate and serves as the base of the entire area. Access is from every part of the lot, thus making the usability and recognizability of spaces intuitive and immediate.

A large Urban Park, with a sports center accessible to all, surrounds and completes the intervention.

The new complex (GROWING TOGETHER), will be reachable by all, through the recent M5 metro line and surface transport.

Cars are banned from the entire area.

In fact, priority was given to the individual who will be able to enjoy the tailor-made services dedicated to him throughout the week.

All the parking lots have been positioned in the basement, accessible from Via Patroclo and from the surrounding streets.

The project focuses on the coexistence and growth of two of the most important football clubs in the world. The Meazza stadium, will be able to host the two football teams and side events in the coming years, simultaneously with the

construction of the new stadium and the commercial area adjacent to the new intervention. Once the new sports temple has been completed, the clubs will continue the agonistic activity in the latter without interruption, while the Meazza can thus be upgraded together with the completion of the planned commercial activities.

2026 will be the year of the Winter Olympics and thanks to the [GROWING TOGETHER] project, we could witness the inauguration of the games in the temple of Milanese football,

the Meazza. Subsequently, as the desire of each team, the two Clubs will be able to manage their own stadium and related commercial areas in full autonomy in agreement with the Municipal Administration.

The sustainable economic impact for this intervention, amounting to 700 MLN, of which 180 for the adaptation of the Meazza, will be amortized thanks to the revenues from the new commercial areas, foreseen for both stadiums.

Remaking lost connections  After review of the Canberra City and Molonglo River establishment, existing natural habitat were strongly impacted by the change. Transport infrastructure flies over the river in various locations, however no connection for wildlife crossing was built based on the expansion of the waterway. When Lake Burley Griffin was constructed, some Ngunawal cultural sites and rock paintings were inundated forever. These truths have made our site emerge, Commonwealth Avenue.

Two ribbons are proposed in this design, one is a wildlife corridor and the other one is a linear park. Both twinning around the existing road bridge and the tram tracks, together it creates a divided but safe passage for wildlife and people to travel over the river. Â The ribbon of wildlife consists of wetland, rockery bushland, woodland and open meadow that provide food, shelter, water access for different species to nest and migrant. It creates a sanctuary above the waterway to enclose circles with the habitats around the banks. The forest will

Â This new type of urban forest and park is separated however inseparable, same as people and wildlife coexist in the ecosystem. We are experimenting on a new design style of green infrastructure aiming to rebuild the lost habitat and to create a healthy living environment. We also need to think about how to preserve history and heritage before overwriting them.

The stories we know were told by our ancestors, how the future generations will receive our messages before their creations. Climate change is irreversible, we’re responsible to slow it down by preserving the resources we possess now and use it smartly.

A Pearl rising from the Sea By: Francis Landscapes

Perched by the sea, the Pearl villa reflects the various hues of blue of the coastline. With its strong yet minimalistic design lines, not only does the villa showcase stunning bay views, it embeds the bay in its setting. Wellness will be high on the agenda, with the outdoor design emphasizing the planting of trees and greenery.

The intention is to convey a sensation of rest, recreation and relaxation, providing clear views from the house in order to contemplate the lagoon in its entire dimension.

Functionally, the house consists of a family area and a guest house, the Majlis; both areas having their own entrances which enhances privacy.

When it comes to making a first impression, the front door is where it all begins. It originally materializes with equally rectangular water mirrors at the entrance of the house along with an interesting interplay of the pouring fountains. It is then

accentuated by a dramatically prolonged water feature which escorts the covered wooden gallery leading to the guest house. This same water feature breaks and cascades down into smaller units covering the diverse house levels.

Water is the coherent element which connects the different locations on the site, it is replicated in various aspects: water mirrors, reflective pools, Jacuzzi, fountains, wall cascade, gargoyle, and nozzles. T h e path leading to the swimming pool is framed by a shading structure; dark pebbles on either side are a striking feature along the way. From the pool, one can enjoy a unique vantage point of the lagoon with Doha City Center in the background, or simply bask into the bubbly Jacuzzi. The impressive rectangle of blue that forms the no-edge pool ends in a cascade collected in a long, narrow channel beneath it where nozzles have been introduced to create a protective barrier from the beach walkers.

To mitigate the challenge of the existing inclined boundary wall, parallel walls to the house were created thus to incorporate activities (be it the facilities, the pantry) in addition to a pool bar and an outdoor seating area oriented towards the lagoon.

Bordered by water, a fluid continuity reins throughout the entire site and culminates in the glistening waters of the adjoining lagoon. The Pearl Villa is the ideal replica of an endless interplay of the various hues of blue which procures a timeless feeling and wellness.

A modern Marina By: Mohamed Omar Ahmed Abdalla

The design features state-of-the-art boating and marina facilities and diverse retail, restaurant and recreational public spaces culminating in an elite modern space.

The modern aesthetic is achieved by different types of hardscape platforms. In order for users to enjoy a pleasant walk at any time of the day, it was necessary to create a series of shade and shadows by utilizing the landscape design.

Trees and palms are planted along the space- these kinds of plantations are easy to acquire, moreover they are easily adaptable to the high salinity levels of the sea, offering great and gentle shading so that users can enjoy their stay during the day. The plant stands are dual functional. One function was to contain the planter on one side, and the other function was to offer a seat for pedestrians. This pattern was repeated on the perimeter low wall that faces the beach, proposing this as a bench to enjoy the horizon.

The longitudinal design of the greenery and the lighting strips along the pathway create a soothing outdoor place at night surrounded by sea views at one of the best spots in Hurghada.

A modern style restaurant is built on stilts above the marina with an outdoor area to enjoy your meal with the view.

Santa Ursula School is a small catholic institution located in a traditional neighborhood of Santiago de Chile, whose open spaces were designed in an unusual way. Fully planted with trees that offer great autumn foliage or gorgeous spring blooming, colorful climbing plants that produce delicate fragrant flowers and large masses of flowering shrubs, the design transforms the typical concept and image of a schoolyard into a series of dynamic inviting gardens.

Built almost twenty years ago, the place is now nature at its best.

Landscape Designer Juan Grimm explains that when he was a child, he used to observe the large structures of Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) which were planted in the original building of Santa Ursula. Years later, as a renowned landscape architect, he was invited to design the gardens of the new building, relocated to a larger site at the foot of the San Cristobal Mountains.

“I defined a quite formal and symmetrical layout for the areas close to the rectory offices and, for those open areas where girls would gather, I decided to offer a more flexible and eye-catching ambiance”

—he says— “But mostly, I wanted to recreate that image in my mind, which I have seen so many times from outside the school’s main fence, of magnificent wisterias hanging freely from support structures”. This romantic gesture was, indeed, what ended up defining the space in the school’s new gardens: three linear pergolas densely

planted with bluish long flower clusters, creating a stunning floral canopy, differentiate three different courtyards.

The courtyards become larger the closer they are to an open lawn area, at the furthermost piece of the site, where students practice sports. This change in size is given by the extension of the three pergolas, the first stretching along approximately 15 meters, the second some meters longer and the third and last extending for almost 30 meters.

After all these years, the initial thin trunks of the wisterias became strong structures which got intertwined and even get confused with the architectural metallic columns, looking almost as naturalistic sculptural objects.

In an amusing gesture, the second courtyard present a cluster of Sweet gum trees (Liquidambar styraciflua) planted separately in circular planters, creating a repetitive pattern on the floor which is also used in the third courtyard, only with a larger number of trees. These same kinds of tree planting patterns are used in other patios such as that of the school library, made of Jacarandas whose purple flowers cover the pavement at certain times of the year, or the spaces around the chapel planted with Linden trees (Tilia moltkei), whose yellow puffball flowers are profuse in spring and produce

a wonderful sweet fragrance. Grimm explains that, at the time, the nouns had an important supply of Linden trees and he used them also for pathways and open areas, always preserving school uses and functions; nowadays, these trees make up a solid image and spatial structure while displaying colors and filling the air with perfumes.

The formal area nearby the school entrance also offers a variety of trees, shrubs and a white rose garden; here, two opposite semicircular concrete benches enclose a small silent fountain aligned to the central axis of the three courtyards or gardens.

From this outdoor sanctuary-like space, the sight of the pergolas fully loaded with flowers and the distant mountains take the mind away for a while.

Ultimately, gardens always become places of refuge and sanctuary.
