Editor’s Note Park Life! We are fortunate to have an abundance of well-designed public parks in the UAE. The importance of community parks cannot be underestimated, they encourage not just children but people of all ages to get outside and be active. Beyond the health and social benefits, parks and playgrounds also impact economic development in surroundings areas with cafes and shops setting up business to avail of the passing foot traffic. In short, parks are big business! 100architects pushed the limits of conventional playground design to create an iconic, destination playground for the rapidly growing city of Chongqing, the 3rd largest city in China. Pegasus Trail has been described as a new milestone in the typology of urban public interventions in the Public Realm. The architects have succeeded in their mission to change the way the community experiences their local park and create a space that served a diverse group of all ages and abilities. The result is a truly one of a kind playground that doubles as an urban landmark. See more on page 38. Back in the region, we also feature a new public park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Like most parks, Al Dar AlBaida Public Park is intended to bring communities together, a place to hold family gatherings, concerts and special events. It’s central location beside the train station in Riyadh makes it an easily accessible and convenient meeting place. But most importantly, the park design as you can learn more about on page 16 delivers that delicate balance of providing an entertainment spot within a natural environment filled with native species. Abu Dhabi to highlight the importance of its urban biodiversity using new index The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) aims to apply the City Biodiversity Index in the emirate of Abu Dhabi – a self-assessment tool for cities worldwide to benchmark and monitor the progress of their biodiversity conservation efforts. The City Biodiversity Index, also known as the Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity aims to help cities achieve a development trajectory where biodiversity and people can thrive in harmony, while addressing biodiversity loss and climate change – all based on the latest scientific data generated during the past decade. The Abu Dhabi City Biodiversity Index will help the emirate benchmark biodiversity conservation efforts in the urban context at city level, help evaluate progress in reducing the rate of biodiversity loss in urban ecosystems and help measure the ecological footprint of cities. Once the index is established future assessments will use this initial effort as a benchmark for further improvements in improving the role of cities, such as Abu Dhabi, in playing a global role in promoting and conserving biodiversity. EAD has been collecting biodiversity data in urban sites such as parks, golf courses, natural areas, residential areas which have provided a wealth of information on urban biodiversity. ‘‘By 2050, the global population is expected to increase to 9.2 billion, of which 6.4 billion will be urban dwellers. It is commonly assumed that cities are devoid of flora and fauna but, in reality, many cities have a rich biodiversity, regardless of geographical location and climate. ‘‘For example, Abu Dhabi and its environs lie in areas that are blessed with high biodiversity value, such as the Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve,

6

an important wetland which is a stopover for migratory species. The reserve also has a resident breeding flamingo population and many new terrestrial insect species new to science have been recorded at this reserve. “The Mangrove National Park also provides many benefits to both terrestrial and marine flora and fauna. The multitude of parks and green areas in and around the city provide a fantastic host of habitats for species. The Abu Dhabi City Biodiversity Index comes at an exciting time for Abu Dhabi, and EAD. We are currently in the preparatory phases and we hope to have the results of the City Index for Abu Dhabi ready by the end of 2021 which will mark a great achievement for biodiversity data that EAD has been collecting for many years.’’ For such projects to succeed the role of citizen science is very crucial and the EAD will be launching a Species App with a citizen science module that will enable citizens to collect and submit species data and assist in collecting biodiversity data. Established in 1996, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is committed to protecting and enhancing air quality, groundwater as well as the biodiversity of our desert and marine ecosystem. By partnering with other government entities, the private sector, NGOs and global environmental agencies, we embrace international best practice, innovation and hard work to institute effective policy measures. We seek to raise environmental awareness, facilitate sustainable development and ensure environmental issues remain one of the top priorities of our national agenda.

Outdoor Living is New Norm By Kundan Chaudhary

Luxury home buyers and developers prioritizing exterior space over anything else Exterior space functionality and borderless interioroutdoor designs are the latest craving of luxury home buyers in the region, with people looking beyond wellkept lawns for safe and comfortable communities that align with their lifestyle. Pools and courtyard gardens were already much in demand in the pre-COVID times. However, buyers are now demanding all-inclusive living spaces as they expect to spend more time at home in post-pandemic times. In the past one year, outdoor space has become such a focus that well-landscaped gardens and pools add premium to a property - increasing its value by almost 10% as a research suggests - and Developers are realizing this. Paying extra focus on the curb appeal with amenities such as on-site parks, multiple outdoor areas and open-air workout spaces at villas and mansions, is now part of basic architecture. Moreover, an aesthetically appealing home exterior can work as a window of sorts to what someone may expect to find inside the house. Often it determines whether or not buyers even want to take a look at the other side of the door. We have seen demand for villas and private homes soar as residents reassess their living arrangements in the new normal, wherein kids and parents are learning and working from home for most of the days in a week. This has also led to the villa rush in the secondary market where we have seen tremendous demand from buying and rental clients longing to reside in well-established villa communities. Dubai homeowners are very particular about the look and feel of their property and ensure the exterior is kept neat and clean. Requests for calming green spaces, well-trimmed plants and water features have now increased. The landscaping, therefore, has become a vital extension of the house and is fundamental in softening urban zones.

8

No matter how well designed the interior is, a run-down landscape surely dents the price the seller expects. Hence, developers and investors are now ensuring a well laid out and aesthetic exterior of the properties. This definitely helps make the deal through and remove any hitch in the minds of the buyer due to a few minor deficiencies in and around the property. Trends to watch - Stress Buster, not a Status Symbol Landscaped gardens used to be the status symbol, but now, with many people giving importance to their mental and physical well-being, having a beautiful view is essential. Luxury home buyers highly appreciate a nice place where they can hang out with their friends and family. The trend to take indoors outside too has been a big one this year. We’re seeing many buyers looking for lawns with living areas like gazebos and pergolas that can serve as a covered area perfect for working, meditation, or entertaining. Love for functional exteriors: As home buyers seek larger and more lavish outdoor spaces, demand for well-designed outdoor areas is growing. People are more into form and functionality. Clients are looking for functional space that suits their daily routine and interests, which also adds pleasing aesthetics to their houses. For luxury home buyers, it is all about the views. That is why indoor-outdoor spaces have become the fundamental drivers for sales in communities offering destination living. I think this trend is here to sustain in future as well. In fact, we expect buyers’ taste to evolve further setting trend of multi-use exterior space designed both for relaxing and for working-from-home. High-end buyers are also looking for bespoke options, where they are allowed to reconfigure outdoor living areas to their taste. It has been proved time and again that people will put a high value on outdoor living in post-pandemic times. The bottom line is that an attractive yard and extended and functional outdoor living spaces with impressive views are sure to help set a property apart, making it more marketable and, therefore, profitable.

Khor Fakkan waterfall By: Ana Mateus

Head of Design – GHESA Water & Art Khor Fakkan, with about 40,000 inhabitants, is Sharjah’s largest exclave city on the East Coast of the Emirates. It is located on the coastal plain bordering the Gulf of Oman, halfway between Kalba and Dibba Al Hisn. The name Khor Fakkan translates as ‘Creek of the Two Jaws’ reflecting its setting in a crescentshaped bay flanked by two headlands.

10

Surrounded by the Emirate of Fujairah and nestled by photogenic rock formations and the rugged Hajar mountains, this beach town is one of the most visited Sharjah tourist places for leisure and adventure. Statistically, the city hosts the highest number of United Arab Emirates internal travelers during weekends and holidays.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The Government of Sharjah acknowledges its importance and has been investing in several educational, tourism, and entertainment projects. One of these projects is The Khor Fakkan Waterfall, designed by the Architectural Office ART & DESIGN and installed by the Water Features Specialist GHESA Water & Art, both known for their prestigious designs in the Emirate. Overlooking the Khor Fakkan Corniche, the waterfall is already one of the most prominent tourist attractions. Installed on the existing rocky hill, it creates an impressive scene with its 35 meters height and 41 meters length. At the top, in a cave carved in the rock, a panoramic restaurant offers a close view of the waterfall and stunning views of the Khor Fakkan Beach. At the highest point of the water feature, at 35 meters high, it is installed the main manifold with a total of 60 underwater outlets to feed the waterfall. From this channel, the water falls into a second channel (located at 30 meters high), and from there the main cascade falls down the rocky slope. A group of 8 pumps, with a total power of 600 HP, is installed to push the water up to the higher channel. The waterfall includes a Unique Water Intelligent Management System, which allows multiple visual water effects automatically adjusting its performance and power usage. Through programming, it is possible to select 4 different scenarios of 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of the available pumping and hydraulic capacity, thus

optimizing the flow delivered to the upper basins allowing to optimize electrical consumption and reducing chemicals for water treatment. The waterfall is illuminated in white color, by a total of 198 GHESA® projectors, equipped with the last generation of LED lights that maximize brightness while reducing power consumption. The installation works in a closed circuit and it is managed by a sophisticated last generation wind speed controller that automatically adjusts the waterfall operating modes according to the wind’s speed and direction, to minimize splashes. The water treatment system further reduces consumption and guarantees the quality of the water, complying with physical, chemical, and microbiological safety requirements.

The Purity Showroom Another project by: ambientStudio This project - phase one of two, completed, offered us the possibilities of reinventing completely the look of an old quite anonymous villa on Jumeirah Road with the objective of transforming its volumes and spaces into a new landmark for the City with a series of modern and completely different open scene. The sophisticated but yet simple clean design showcases an open concept - instead of the closed walls existing prior to the intervention with hidden corners, transparent display spaces, shaded walkways and open views where to exhibit

12

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

wonderful and timeless elements of European Design at their best. The project keywords are as per the Client’s brief: simplicity, transparency, clean lines. The designers prepared sequences, very clean ordered geometries and all are organized in all available spaces, transforming completely the old look into an open, visible and refreshing show case. The captivating outdoor space created has attracted individuals to come inside and explore the PURITY showroom and its brands. The project has been organized and built - also interrupted for the covid emergency. Companies involved - suppliers, were, among others, Linea Light for the outdoor lighting elements, SpaceYard, for the construction of all Landscape Elements. The Interior Design was conceived by Light Space Design. The front of the Villa opens with a clear glass fence, acting as the new boundary wall. The

different levels from the road to the entrance have been adjusted with four large steps within a decking made with re-composite sustainable wood. Leading to the front of the villa - one long step connects indoor and outdoor spaces. Vertical and horizontal greenery, organized in precise spaces comprised with a very small white linear water feature, is the welcoming element that introduces the visitors to all the spaces and levels. Open and secluded spaces are then organized in a succession of “open rooms” with display of easy movable furniture elements. Some of them are shaded, others are open. One – left side - is covered with a unique modular shading system. All elements are also visible from indoor thanks to the generous openings. The back of the Villa has a green wall and dry garden that shows a stunning & relaxing view from the workstations inside.

13

I transformation

The elements were selected, colors, textures, et c. with a simple color scheme with white being the dominant color, paired with beige , connected the building, the entrance and all elements in such pure harmony. Softscape is regional - as ambientStudio botanist explanation - where local species, and adapted ones, are immersed in the entire site, sustained by a modern computerized irrigation system. The front garden palms are Washingtonia robusta, selected in different sizes, to make the space more cozy, in the reduced frontal tree pits. Space is the essence and the display scope as always considered.

14

The fragrance is ensured - in a multi-sensory experience for the visitors / guests - with species flowering during the winter season in Dubai. The team selected a Millingtonia hortensis (Jasmine Tree) in the front, and on the side a very large Plumeria obtusa alba, and by using - as under canopy, a perfumed Murraya paniculata in a bed of fluffy irregular Zoysia japonica. The large frontal green pit is “invaded” - on purpose - by a ground cover naturally growing also on the beach of Dubai, Ipomea pes-caprae. The “wild” look near the frontal glass fence is also obtained with a series of a large Pennisetum alba, to be kept tall and moving with the breeze coming from the nearby beach.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

A tropical - more luscious - garden is in the back, protected from the heat, where Caryota mitis(fish tail palms) are together with some Ravenala madagascariensis (traveller’s palms) and small Papyrus. A very unique xeri (dry) garden is located at the back of the showroom, with a meticulous selection of heat and draught tolerant plants: Agave Victoriaereginae, the best ones for Dubai climate, plus many other specimen. Those are embedded within white gravel, punctuated by ornamental local boulder rocks and strategically placed copper pipes - for night time projected shades effected.

The architects at ambientStudio also selected small and medium specimen of Opuntia ficusindica(Prickly pear) from Italy, large Zamia furfuracea (Card boards palm) surrounded with Adenium obesum, (Rose of the desert) and taller cacti, such as Euphorbia trigona (African milk tree cacti), Pilosocereus pachycladus (blue columnar cactus). A larger lawn is in the back of the Villa, with a fragrant climbing Jasminus officinalis (Jasmine planted and “educated” on cables) a different and fast vertical garden.

City Parks Riyadh’s new city park meets the demands of its vibrant youth By Rasha Samawi – CC group Al Dar AlBaida Public Park is located in the heart of Riyadh and plays an important recreational, environmental and cultural function, contributing to a better quality of life. As an urban park, it serves the different needs and functions (rest,

16

play, sporting activities, and facilities, cultural and recreational centers). It is designed using native species, with a considerable use of grass and acclimated shrub and tree species for the Riyadh area.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The park fulfills a need for a permanent site equipped to hold major cultural and recreational events for the youth, children and families in Riyadh. The project aims to apply concepts of sustainability and green building standards taking into account people with special needs requirements, through designing and developing a group of landscaped places to enrich public spaces at urban level in the city. Where public

parks are considered among the basics of modern city planning, municipalities are working on establishing them as public facilities for recreation and leisure in cities. These gardens also include special places for sports such as walking or running and a place where children can play in a safe environment. The project is characterized by its central location as its easily accessible from all parts of the city

17

and is adjacent to a new train station, addition to being surrounded by main and secondary streets pouring into a vital and densely populated area. All of these factors influenced the landscape design and ensured it blended in with the place and provided a distinctive architectural addition to the area. The landscape design aims to create a biodiversity of green areas to maintain equilibrium balance through initiatives of green structural integration with built structures and buildings, while rapid urbanization is continuously altering urban ecosystems. The main concept of the park’s landscape design is to create attractive and distinctive spaces that achieve balance in terms of movement, visual and environmental, and to emphasize spatial balance in the distribution of open and built spaces. The design is structured around two central nodes from which the various open and built functions originate. The distribution of functions varies

between the open part and the built part to form a kind of spontaneous contrast in the distribution of the various spaces and thus gives a diversity in the corridors, which gives an environmentally balanced spatial experience with the surrounding and attractive to visitors, socially effective, vibrant and multifunctional environments that reflect the principles of communication and sustainability. In addition to providing a comfortable and safe picnic opportunity for visitors experiencing different spatial zones provided by the project, shown in the open theater, family theater and Child Theater, in addition to many picnic zones dedicated for families, youth and children to enjoy a unique experience.

Sustainable Landscaping Creating healthy landscapes using Native and Xeriscape Plants

Wahat Al Sahraa Nurseries – A Desert Group Company As a part of the green industry and a landscape services provider, we love techniques that help minimize any negative impact our landscapes have on the environment. Sustainable landscaping comprises of all the environmental, social, and economic elements. Sustainable landscape can be defined as a healthy and strong landscape that is in harmony with native environmental settings containing climate, water, soil, and topography. While designing the landscape, linking back to the area’s historic characteristics and the existing surroundings can lead to the significance of greenery in reducing surplus heat and creating a balanced microclimatic condition in urban areas and can add to the visual benefits of UAE. There is no universally accepted definition of native plants. Generally native plants usually include plants that are found to occur in distinct natural places without the

20

Prosopis cineraria

aid of, or introduction by humans. Naturally, native plants species that have grown accustomed to local climate conditions are the best when designing xeriscape, as they are enabled with high efficiency of water consumption and minimization of maintenance time and cost. Native and xeriscape plants provide a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance landscaping while benefiting the environment. Native plants, once established, save time and money by eliminating or significantly reducing the need for fertilizers, pesticides, watering, and lawn maintenance. They can also protect the environment and help minimize flooding. We have screened over 170 different plant varieties in the UAE (tree, shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers) which are salt resistant along with their description, distribution and uses.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Acacia xanthophloea

It is often assumed that native or xeriscape plants look sparse and scruffy which do not seem true in case of UAE. Native plant species including Prosopis cineraria also known as Ghaf Tree (The National Tree of UAE), Phoenix dactylifera (Date Palm), and many other native species are commonly found in lawns of UAE national’s houses which proves the interest of UAE people in native plants and suitability of these plant species in landscape. Most of native plants are not only xerophytic in nature but also belong to halophytes which can tolerate high level of salinity like Zygophyllum qatarense and Salsola drummondii. Xeriscaping is a great way to reduce fertilizer and pesticide application as well as cut back on irrigation. Since this approach incorporates native plants, xeriscapes are well adjusted to the environment and do not require many soil amendments or additional fertilizer to keep the plants growing. Native plants have adapted to local physical and biological conditions without the need for human intervention. They will resist damage from freezing, drought, common diseases, and require less frequent watering. Additionally, native plants will increase the biodiversity found in your garden. Native plants attract other native species, including pollinators, which will keep your garden healthy and flowering year after year. Due to their deep root system, native plants also help manage rainwater runoff and maintain healthy soil. This

can help to mitigate floods (including flash floods) and prevent soil compaction. Landscaping with native and xeriscape plants can be the alternative way for sustainable greenery in the future under the extreme conditions of low/saline water with many other ecological and economic benefits. Green sector in UAE depends completely on exotic species and irrigation water mostly from nonrenewable ground resources. Native plants have different qualities due to which they can be used as fodder, medicine, landscaping, afforestation, sand stabilization, wind break and alternative crops in drought and saline conditions, all of which can contribute to sustainable greenery and maintaining specific unique and traditional desert landscape of UAE. Using native plants can also reduce the maintenance, fertilizer, and pesticide cost of any landscape project. Moreover, landscaping with native plants will also conserve the Indigenous flora through utilization. We must improve our landscape plans with maximum utilization of native species to make it more suitable to the desert background and represent horticultural heritage of UAE. We can make future designs more sustainable and traditional by giving a specific identification of national landscape. Talk to us at Wahat Al Sahraa for a range of Xerophytic and Native Plants. We have most of them in stock. Contact us at: nursery.enquiry@desertgroup.ae

Bayside resort is turning Ras Sadr district into a chic, relaxation hub.

By: Maha Salah El Din & Toka Ahmed Bayside is one of the most relaxing resorts on the shore of the red sea. The resort is characterized by its calm mood and luxurious views, it’s the ideal place to avoid the everyday hustle of life. Located at Ras Sadr, the resort is easily accessed from the main Suez to Sharm el sheikh

22

road, which is one of the most scenic routes in Egypt, dotted with watching farms filled with olive trees, tamarins, and various other fruits. Although Ras Sadr is a sandstone district, the design of Bayside takes the district in a new direction with its calming architecture and landscape design.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Project description The resort underwent a huge renovation, with the landscape playing a pivotal role in completing the architect’s vision of creating a calm and harmonious resort where buildings and nature blend together. Wooden panels cover the building’s façade, while the cabanas on the lagoon have been changed into huts so guests can fully experience the resort’s peaceful environment. While the landscape has been developed as a xeriscapetropical resort where the tropical mood is located at the heart of the resort, while the xeriscape is planted to balance the water consumption and bring a desert feel to the shore. It’s also added at the cliffs to prevent any accidents.

23

I relaxation hub

The resort has been designed to maximize every emotion with every footprint. Depending on a guest’s mood, they can choose which area they wish to hang out in. The resort has a calm zone where people can meditate and relax, as well as an active zone for releasing energy and letting go of any negativity. Guests can take a dip in the resort’s lake if they feel like swimming or practice yoga and meditation while connecting with nature. The relaxing area is one of the main spaces within the calm zone where people can feel the intimacy and relaxation in the jungle-like mood, or they can emerge themselves further into nature along the jungle walk pathways.

While the resort is a calming space, there are still all the facilities that young families with kids would expect, including a kids swimming pool and playground and for the adrenalin junkies, there is a sports area located beside the beach, as well as a fitness center. The active area also contains a fun instagramable plaza, as well as a café and restaurant area to enjoy the Hawaiiantropical feel of the place. The resort is mainly designed for honeymooners where they can find nature and foliage trees. The water ripples are the source of calmness and relaxation which is reflected in the design by creating islands. Each island has its own activity and mood. Moreover, the smooth walkways around the islands are provided by the large foliage trees which give the tropical mood to the resort. Play with Heritage By: Carve

Little Piemonte mountain villages have been the inspiration for a new children’s playground Hidden in the beautiful mountainous landscape of Piemonte on the Italian side of the Alps, little towns stand out as tiny gems in the lush green of the woods. These small agglomerations of few houses tied together inspired Carve for the design of an attractive and iconic playscape concept at Serravalle Designer Outlet. Carve was asked by McArthurGlen to create a multifunctional design where several features needed to come together as a whole: an iconic playscape, the main (event) square, a picnic area, an indoor crèche, lighting and shading structure all connected with a common design language. The architects based their design concept on a strong geometric pattern able to adapt to the wide range of functions requested.

26

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Sized down colourful village For the playground, Carve envisioned a little and colourful village that is sized down to a child’s dimension, intentionally designed to encourage curiosity amongst the young. From the beginning, the multi-age approach is taken into consideration in the design. The result is a unique play village, built in clusters of hexagonally shaped plateaus and towers, where it is possible to move from one tower to the other in a maze. Just like the Piemonte mountain villages, this playscape slightly steps up. Various entry routes and an alley-like maze with squares peek through the surroundings, giving the play village an authentic mountain town feel. Open plaza to share The main event square is the central space where the numerous visitors of the outlet enter. It is kept open to allow a large variety of activities to take place: temporary events, exhibitions, outdoor cinema. The concept was to build a pleasant space, where people could rest and watch their children either at a distance or close by. Seating elements and a large

spanning shading structure have been arranged in the space. All these strategies aim at building a plaza to share with the local community, lively and attractive throughout the day and all seasons. Green plinth A ribbon of vegetation is folded around and through the spaces, as a green horizontal plinth, creating the feeling of “a village in the nature”. Thanks to this, the parking space is kept out of sight, and additionally, visitors are welcomed into a safe space, where kids can play freely sheltered from the carpark noise. Community picnic area Campers regularly making use of the parking space have seen their facilities improved along with three public barbecues integrated into the new picnic area. Open for the refreshment of many different users (customers, passersby, local community, campers), the picnic area is designed as a lushly planted spot with an intimate atmosphere as if you are nestled in a garden with trees providing shadow.

27

I playground

Hardscape design An irregular pattern of tiles creating a gradient of grey tones was designed to pave the whole area. Made of concrete with a natural stone aggregate, the triangular tile was specially fabricated for this project. When the triangle-shapes are put together, they form a hexagonal shape, referring to the design of the towers in a one unified whole. Village to play The play village consists of four different zones: toddler towers; sensory towers; active and adventure towers; lounge and lookout towers. The last three are grouped together creating the main play area, while the toddler zone is separated. Every kid can dive in this new world of shapes and bright colours with endless possibilities of routing to explore. Like in a play maze, they are able to play in, on and in between the towers. To achieve easy or more challenging experiences, the play functions are allocated according to age groups. Children will love to run over the steps, slide down, hide, and discover the interior of the towers that include a combination of multiple elements: tunnels, trampolines, hammocks and nets, kaleidoscopic installations, tactile ropes, mirrors, and so much more.

28

Design inclusiveness Social play is achieved by making connections between the world inside the play houses and the play activities on the ‘street’. These are physical connections (through ramps, climbing nets or grips), but also visual connections (with transparency in wooden cladding and perforated walls). Inclusiveness had a key-role in the design. Children with physical disabilities can reach the whole play village and most of the play towers through ramps. Seating for parents is integrated on the edges of the hexagonal platforms, as if they were benches on the sides of the street in a tiny Italian village. Playing with contrasts The architects clearly love exploring and balancing opposites. Here the reference to the local mountain heritage is revitalized with a colourful smash, transforming a tiny rustic village into a complete new experience to explore. Highly appreciated by McArthurGlen, this approach has been extended and incorporated into other surrounding structures creating an enjoyable immersive experience where we think people will be invited to come back time and time again.

A Vietnamese family home The design of this simple Vietnamese home attempts to address the country’s urban crisis.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Like many other countries in the world, Vietnam continues to be affected by Global Warming. Natural disasters happen more often in this part of the world as temperatures rise and air pollution increases, creating a toxic living environment for its residents. People in large cities in Vietnam suffer not only from environmental pollution and a lack of open green spaces (tree density in HCMC 2018 was at 0,69 sqm/person), but also from the pressure of urbanization, which combined together contributes to a weakened physical and mental state of wellbeing. Moreover, spending time with family and regularly meeting up touch with others seems to be a thing of the past. Therefore, in an effort to improve our habitat and make the connection between family members better, we need to first solve our urban issues. T-House is a first

step at this, built in Binh Duong for a threegenerational family. The owner’s wish was to have all of her family around her as she had a fear of being alone. Thus, a family ventilated house was created. It is a house that everyone is encouraged to spend more time in with a common space for family connection and designed in a way to make it easy to see each other. The project was created by two blocks stay about two corners of the house, two void spaces between two functional blocks, combining garden and common activities to ensure that all spaces are illuminated by natural light. The shape of the house follows the shape of the land with the long Western facade. The façade is divided into 8 squareangled walls in the west, and combined with opening windows at the cavity of the walls, the corridor and the wind system in the back of the garden forming a circulation ventilation system throughout the house. Private spacethe bedrooms are divided into two corners of the house, connected by common living space, void and green garden. Arranging spaces with the purpose of ventilation, lighting also creates

a space to connect, encourage members to leave the rooms, join in common activities, enjoy nature or seeing each other. The house has simple spaces, using simple materials and local workers to save in energy consumption, increase green space and save construction costs.

Virtues of the “Poor Man’s Rose By John A. Davies

Professor Stefan Buczacki, a UK gardening authority, recently called out “snobbery” in the British gardening world, resulting in the decline of the geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum) and it being labelled as ‘the poor man’s rose’.

Geranium variety Credit: Paul Crampel Fibrex Nuresries

Looking back to Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester in the 1960s, geraniums, along with other flowers, were considered the celebrities of the summer bedding display, much appreciated by people passing through and those sitting on the many benches in the gardens, simply enjoying the floral feast. I say this from personal experience, since as an apprentice with Manchester Parks Department at that time and working in the gardens, people would often remark that the colourful show gave them deep, satisfying pleasure.

Piccadilly Gardens in the 1960s

34

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Recalling another floral banquet of the sixties which featured geraniums, though on a much smaller scale, was a pavement garden in Mulberry Walk in the London Borough of Chelsea, which the owner had created for the enjoyment of visitors and passers – by. It was my task as the owner’s part-time gardener, to change the display according to the seasons. In summer, the flower beds were planted with the zonal geranium Claremont - a salmon – pink variety, and trimmed with pink ageratum. Antique urns framed aspects of the garden and featured the regal geranium (Pelargonium grandiflorum), variety Carisbrook, edged with ivy-leaved geraniums. Visitors and people passing by invariably expressed sentiments to the effect that the scene “pleased the eye, gladdened the heart and nourished the soul,” sentiments, which, by way of interest, have since become the motto of my landscape and garden design company.

On a brighter note, Professor Stefan Buczacki’s recent article in the Mail Online refers to the Memorial Gardens embracing the Victoria Monument in front of Buckingham Palace, where for many decades the star of the summer planting scheme has been red zonal geraniums, favoured by the Queen and chosen to correspond with the tunics of the guards on parade.

Memorial Gardens

Mulberry Walk Pavement Garden

Though sadly Piccadilly Gardens no longer exists as the floral heart of the Manchester I knew in the 1950s and 60s, the cheerful geraniums having been replaced with a combination of footpaths, a fountain display and expanses of grass punctuated with trees. On the face of it, such an arrangement should have proved successful, instead, despite appointing top designers, each attempt at improvement has been a disaster. It’s as if the spirit of place is objecting and perhaps, therefore, the reintroduction of joyful seasonal flowers would solve the issue for the great benefit of the city and its people. While the beautiful urns and stone masonry forming the flower beds of the Mulberry Walk pavement garden remained the last time I saw them via Google Earth, they were depressingly bereft of flowers and pleading for their return.

Her Majesty’s approval thus makes a mockery of the claim made by a social arbiter that: “While it’s all right in Austria and Capri, the geranium should never be planted in the gardens of England.” Strange logic based presumably on the flawed belief that because of its popularity, it is vulgar, never mind that it provides happiness to countless admirers in Britain and around the globe. Over the years, here in the Kingdom of Bahrain, where my design practice is located, the geranium has steadily risen in popularity becoming a major feature in winter planting schemes. Similar to the British summer, the winter climate of Bahrain and other Arabian Gulf countries is ideal for many other flowers commonly found in the British Isles during summertime.

35

I gardens The Daily Mail’s reference to elitism in the garden world was startling to read, as it was the first time I had come across such pretentiousness. For all flowers are beautiful, and referring to those which are approved by the snobbish set, such as the gardenia and orchid, both are enchanting. However, these are tropical plants and require to be grown and displayed in the greenhouse and sometimes used as house plants, they couldn’t be grown successfully in the gardens of the United Kingdom. Another flower mentioned by Professor Buczacki deemed infra dig by the snobbish in the gardening community is the rhododendron – a plant with which I have a very special relationship, in so far as it introduced me to the Spirit of Nature. Referring again to my days as an apprentice, on this occasion in Wythenshawe Park, I happened to be hoeing a bed of young rhododendron bushes when the beauty of a particular white bloom of the variety “Polar Bear” caught my eye; I found my attention drawn into it and in some way uniting with it, the experience culminating in an expansion of consciousness whereby I found myself in a blissfully happy state, completely at one with nature.

I mention this as all flowers, including the geranium, have this wonderful characteristic of serving as vehicles to higher, blissful states of being. Henry Thomas Hamblin described flowers as: “The smile of the divine,” and this may be the reason why gardening is so popular and satisfying – the pastime, albeit perhaps unconsciously, is a means of communing with nature, the essence of which is divine, thereby providing carefree relief from the troubles of the world. Recognizing the value of communing with nature, the mission of the Dubai based Cityland Real Estate Development Company, creators of the very popular Dubai Miracle Garden and the Dubai Butterfly Garden aims “to bring people one step closer to nature with every development, and to provide people with access to nature inspired leisure and entertainment” - all with seasonal flowers.

An Urban Toy for the City

Chinese architects are changing how children play with their elaborate new public realm project Pegasus Trail By: 100 Architects Pegasus Trail is a new milestone in the typology of urban public interventions made by 100architects in the Public Realm. The neighborhood-scale intervention landed in the ever-growing city of Chongqing, the 3rd largest city of China and one of the Chinese megacities with greatest growth rates in the past decade.

38

This project intends to be a new typology of public space. Following the studio’s belief that “Play is not only for kids”, 100architects have designed an urban playscape for the city, and for all its citizens, regardless of their age. A playscape that acts as an urban attractor, merged with the cityscape, blurring the boundaries between the play area and the

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

surrounding cityscape, and presenting itself open and accessible for everyone. The design of this multifunctional playscape, and hence its name Pegasus, is inspired by equestrian sports, in which the horse is the central feature of disciplines such as “Dressage” and “Show Jumping”. The mythical winged horse leaves a magical yellow trace behind, meandering accurately around circular mini-plazas that serve as platforms for leisure and social interactions, turning the playscape into a

multifunctional public space to be enjoyed by kids & adults alike. Like the equestrian sports, the design of Pegasus Trail is based on a challenging course of obstacles that users need to overcome successfully, turning the playscape into a “Play Route”. It has been designed as a playful course of challenging activities along the path of the yellow ribbon, which helps developing and challenging the physical abilities and cognitive skills of those who dare to try.

39

I public playground

All the playful components of the Play Route have been carefully studied and designed to create a sequential circuit of events, composed of challenging activities to be executed one after the other in a linear way. Therefore, the Play Route has been split into different sections with different complexities for different groups of children’s ages. This way, we have an easier level of complexity in playful components for kids from 3 to 6 years old at the horse’s tail, and it gradually increases while getting closer to the horse’s head, presenting bigger challenges for kids from 6 to 14 years old. The ribbon meanders around 3 circular miniplazas hosting different typologies of urban furniture for resting. While the ribbon represents the play and the action for kids, the circular plazas represent the rest and the calm spaces for parents and adults. In order to make the ribbon very eye-catching and stand out from its surrounding background, it was done in a bright and intense yellow color, an energetic color that quickly grabs the attention of passersby, and can evoke a sense of happiness, vitality and optimism.

40

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The floor, solved with EPDM to absorb impacts while playing, renders a wide range of patterns, graphics and interactive games which connect the different spaces and activities on the ribbon. The night effect of the project enhances the meandering profile of the ribbon with LED warm lightboxes embedded in both borders of the ribbon, while other LED lightboxes embedded in the floor highlight as well the perimeter of the circular plazas.

House on a Steep Hill By Francis Landscapes

A dream home in Beirut surrounded by 50-year pine trees is achieved despite its steep terrain Located on the crest of a hill, this villa culminates with an infinity pool that seems to blend earth and sky. With a dominating view of Beirut and the Mediterranean Sea, the garden spirals down a hill rendered magical by 50-year-old pine trees and the breathtaking 360-degree view. Here, the setting itself remains the focus, with a landscape that respects the magnificence of the location.

42

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The wonderful thing about this house from the late forties is its spiraling garden that encircles the hill, tempting one to take a hypnotic stroll down through the grounds, slowly uncovering new patches of pleasures, a bar, an infinity pool, a rose garden, a pond, a shaded sitting garden, and of course, the larger-than-life panorama. The guide to designing this project was the steep nature of the terrain, with its impressive trees towering throughout, allowing for the creation of a young garden with an old soul. This is especially

visible in the contrast between the lush green of the obedient lawns and shrubs and the halfcentury-old magnificent defiance of pines, cypresses, and cedars. While the villa has no shortage of astounding views, it is from the fabulous heights of the infinity pool that the view is best enjoyed, as it seems to vanish endlessly beyond the city and into the immense horizon.

I Italian showcase

Green Architecture hero celebrated at Venice Biennale The Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture celebrates the maestro Emilio Ambasz.

Emilio Ambasz, considered the father, poet and prophet of Green Architecture, will be exhibiting in the second section of the Italian Pavilion at the 17th International Venice Biennale of Architecture running from May until November 2021. The Italian Pavilion will take an in-depth look at the pressing theme of climate change and its related challenges, where the contribution of architecture is considered a sine qua non. It will put forward new ideas and suggestions, provide food for thought, and reveal the results of years of interdisciplinary research spent listening to and trying to understand - on the outer limits of error-prone mainstream architecture – the “background noise and flapping butterfly wings,” in the words of the exhibition’s curator Alessandro Melis. One of the exhibition’s invitees - with a large area dedicated to him - is the multi-talented inventor Emilio Ambasz, the creator of projects across the globe that have become benchmarks and inspiration for modern-day green architecture. Emilio Ambasz says: “Every building is an intrusion into the plant kingdom and is a challenge to nature: we must devise architecture that stands as the embodiment of a reconciliatory pact between nature and construction, designing buildings so intrinsically connected to their surroundings that they are unable to disentangle themselves from each other.” Using multimedia resources, the Pavilion will pay tribute to the Argentinian maestro via films, signs, panels and models of two iconic creations from Ambasz’s huge output, two works that, decades later, are and will be at the heart of the debate on poetics and the discipline of design: the Casa de Retiro Espiritual - an incredible, dreamlike reference to the primordial notion of home -, and the ACROS centre in Fukuoka, one of the most innovative, spectacular and well-known green buildings in the world, whose 25th anniversary celebrations were broadcast around the world at the end of 2020. Melis explains, “Emilio Ambasz’s presence in the pavilion is essential for at least three reasons: his pioneering research, his focus on radical architecture, and the international

46

significance of his visions”. According to the Pavilion’s curator, it is Ambasz’s experiments that inspired the green architecture that is now so revered, but that has never shown enough gratitude to the maestro. And, again in the words of Melis, his “are experiments that are no less sophisticated than current ones: they are works that are already complete and conclusive, and already include contemporary elements. This is not a pioneering value, it is an absolute value.” Another absolute value is the legacy stemming from two of Ambasz’s experiences - the famous exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape (which brought Italian design to the attention of the whole world) and his having shined a spotlight on radical movements and new utopias to call into question current paradigms - two significant elements for this celebration. Not to mention his role as a paradigmatic figure, inspirer and fundamental bridge for architects from all over the world. Ambasz’s message brings together “technology and primitivism” (Terence Riley, former head of the department of Architecture and Design – MoMA, NY), and “he creates sophisticated heavens on earth” (A. Mendini); Emilio Ambasz “has taught us to see a dimension in which nature and architecture are inseparable, a realm that goes from nature created by God to one forged by man” (Tadao Ando). Pavilion will be providing further visibility to the announcement by MoMA of New York of the establishment of the ‘Emilio Ambasz Research Institute’ (EA/RI) for the joint study of a new architecture that will reconcile Nature with the artificial environment. It will be based in the MoMA Department of Architecture and Design and will further develop and enrich the global debate about the urgent need for an ecological recalibration. Ambasz continues with his poetic research where the natural and the artificial blend and become one: “it is an ethical obligation to demonstrate that another future is possible. We need to affirm another model of life in order to change the route of the present. The Western notion of man’s creations as distinct and separate entities - contrasting with Nature - has exhausted its intellectual and ethical capital.”
