Flowpoint is the Star of the Show in Dubai

Flowpoint rapid setting grout has been used to grout 9,000sqm of paving at the iconic Dubai Opera.

Located in what is known as “the most prestigious square kilometre in the world”, Dubai Opera is a masterpiece of contemporary design with the ability to transform into three styles – a 2,000 seat theatre, a concert hall, and ‘flat floor’ for events such as weddings and trade shows. Since opening its doors last year, Dubai Opera has welcomed thousands of visitors from all around the world to see a number of longrunning shows including Les Misérables, Jersey Boys and Mary Poppins, as well as ballets, operas, orchestras, fashion shows, conferences, galleries and art exhibitions. Flowpoint, supplied by Instarmac’s partner in Dubai, Tanseeq LLC, was specified to grout 9,000sqm of paving surrounding the beautiful Dubai Opera. Part of the UltraScape Mortar Paving System, Flowpoint has been independently tested to British Standard 7533 and has been developed over a number of years

12

to provide a durable finish which will not crack or stain – even in the extremely high temperatures in Dubai. This was put to the test when Flowpoint was used to grout 40,000sqm of paving at City Walk in July 2015 – a time when temperatures can reach up to 50ºC. Located off Sheikh Zayed Road, City Walk is a premium location in the heart of Dubai and brings together the perfect mix of residences, high end retailers and restaurants as well as tree lined pathways and a crystal clear lake with stunning views of the Burj Khalifa, where Flowpoint has also been used. The flowable properties of Flowpoint allow for large areas of paving to be grouted quickly. It can be used to grout joints from 3-5mm to 50mm and as deep as 200mm in one application which was ideal for City Walk where a number of different sized stones were used. Flowpoint can receive foot traffic after just 1 hour and vehicular traffic in 4 hours – ideal for sites where certain areas need to be accessed to allow construction to continue. Such was the case at MBR City when Flowpoint was used to grout 9,000sqm of granite stone. MBR (Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum) City is the definition of luxury. The 45 million square feet development brings together striking villas and mansions, fine dining, flagship retailers, 60 acres of park lands, 8km of shared cycling tracks and 90 acres of crystal lagoons – the first of its kind and largest in the world. Construction at MBR City continued whilst the granite paving was being installed. A number of heavy goods vehicles travelled across the paved areas each day demonstrating Flowpoint’s exceptional capabilities in areas of heavy traffic with vehicles turning frequently.

HIGH-PROFILE SPORTING EVENTS IN BRAZIL BENEFIT FROM RAIN BIRD IRRIGATION SYSTEMS While all irrigation projects have their unique challenges, few experience the intense scrutiny that accompanies those projects associated with global sporting events. The pressure to have nearly perfect, green, healthy, playable sports fields and surrounding landscapes is at its pinnacle on the international stage, with events watched by millions of people worldwide. Over the past few years, Rain Bird experienced this type of pressure firsthand, successfully providing irrigation systems for not one, but two, multiweek international sporting events in Brazil. International Soccer Tournament Between September 2012 and January 2014, a total of 11 regional soccer stadiums constructed to host the largest international soccer tournament installed Rain Bird irrigation systems to keep their turf in top condition. “The sports turf managers at these stadiums were focused on providing the absolute best playing surface for elite soccer athletes,” said Jose Giacoia Neto, Rain Bird Brazil’s international business manager. “Obviously, irrigation is aw key element of soccer field maintenance, and we were pleased that Rain Bird was chosen to supply these systems.”

The first Brazilian stadium to install a Rain Bird irrigation system was Castelão Stadium located in the city of Fortaleza in September of 2012. Over the next year, Rain Bird signed on ten more stadiums in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Cuiabá, Manaus, Natal, Recife and Curitiba. Fabio Camara, general manager of World Sports, has worked on over 100 different sports turf construction and maintenance projects with Rain Bird Brazil over the past 17 years, including these 11 soccer fields. “In my opinion, Rain Bird products offer excellent distribution uniformity, quality and durability,” Camara said. “The various system

14

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

components are also easy to manage. But perhaps more importantly, we have always gotten such great support from the team at Rain Bird Brazil. That combination of excellent quality and customer service really sets Rain Bird apart.” Global Multi-Week Sporting Event In 2016, Rain Bird irrigation systems were in the spotlight once again, as Brazil prepared to host what is perhaps the world’s most famous multi-week sporting event. The Barra Athletes’ Housing Complex, Barra Sports Park Complex, the equestrian crosscountry course, the field hockey and rugby pitches and Madureira Park in Rio de Janeiro installed Rain Bird products. Other areas within the city of Rio de Janeiro, including Tomorrow’s Museum and Downtown Boulevard, were also renovated with Rain Bird systems in anticipation of the thousands of international visitors that were soon to converge upon the city. Each venue had its own specific challenges. At Barra Athletes’ Housing Complex and the Barra Sports Park Complex, the goal was to deter irrigation system vandalism and improving water efficiency. Twenty-five miles of Rain Bird’s XFS Subsurface Dripline was installed underground, providing a highly efficient, vandal-proof alternative to above-ground irrigation sprays and rotors. At these two venues, XFS is estimated to have reduced water consumption by at least 30 percent. Rain Bird’s ESPLXME and ESP-LXD commercial controllers were also installed at these two properties to enable precision watering of various micro-climates caused by areas of sun and shade. At the rugby pitches, Rain Bird’s 8005 rotors and 2” and 3” rain guns were chosen for their long throw radiuses. The 8005 rotors utilized Rain Bird’s exclusive Rain Curtain nozzle technology for superior coverage and gentle close-in watering. Key relationships and support With a focus on sustainability and its commitment to The Intelligent Use of Water™, Rain Bird helped these venues provide the world’s best soccer, hockey and rugby players with superior field conditions. Fans also got to enjoy beautiful, waterefficient green spaces in various sports complexes and city parks throughout Brazil. After each of the irrigation projects for these events was defined, the sports field and landscape builders who won the event’s primary bid began directly contacting Rain Bird partners. According to Rain Bird Brazil’s Jose Giacoia Neto, a variety of factors helped his team successfully win the bids for these projects. “Rain Bird Brazil has been working closely with all key players in the sports field construction market for more than 10 years,” Giacoia said. “Because of our close working relationships and the time we invested, we became their main technical support for specification, design and technical sports field solutions. That gave us the kind of name recognition and brand preference that came in very handy in this high-profile situation.” Rain Bird Brazil’s team consists of high-level engineers with solid reputations throughout the country. A trusted distributor network provides local service throughout each sales territory, allowing the team to create unique solutions customized for each market and customer’s needs. After each of the irrigation projects for these sporting events was defined, the sports field and landscape builders who won the event’s primary bid began directly contacting Rain Bird partners. “Over the years, Rain Bird Brazil has built a reputation based upon credibility and confidence,” Giacoia added. “As the only international irrigation manufacturer with local subsidiaries and local employees with commercial and technical expertise, we were able to truly differentiate ourselves from the competition in the Brazilian sports turf market.”

World Earth Day and Youth Education

Emirates Soil Museum is unique facility in the Middle East and North Africa region for youth education on soils, earth, climate and environmental issues

Dr Shabbir A Shahid

Senior Salinity Management Scientist International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, Dubai United Arab Emirates Email: s.shahid@biosaline.org.ae

About Earth and Services, it Provides Earth is also known as Globe or World with a radius of 6,371 km and 1.08321 x 1012 km3 volume. Total land area is 148.94 x 106 km2 (29.2%) whereas water occupies 70.8% area of the planet. Earth was evolved about 4.54 billion years ago. It is third planet from the sun and is part of the solar system. Earth is unique in sense that it has atmosphere containing oxygen (21%), oceans of liquid water and harbor life. The Earth provides ecosystems services and in order to keep the earth healthy for long term services we need to maintain the balance among our economic, social, and environmental needs presently and generations to come, therefore, it is essential to promote harmony with nature and the Earth. It is well known that ecosystem services can be divided into 4 categories, 1) provisioning – food production and water; 2) regulating – climate and disease control; 3) supporting - nutrient cycling and crop pollination; 4) cultural – spiritual and recreational benefits etc. The policy makers always look at economic values of the ecosystem services in order to make policies, and many ecosystems have economic values and thus become priority to sustain their services at the national and international levels. First evidence of life on Earth was 3800 million years ago Looking at the current status of the Earth it is evident that Earth is shrinking for ecosystem services due to many reasons such as increase in greenhouse gasses causing global warming, climate change, land degradation, soil salinization, rapid population growth and subsequent urbanization, unsustainable use to offset food and other requirements for speedy growth of population. In the year 1700 the world population was 0.6 billion which is projected to be 10.9 billion by 2100. However, the earth planet remains one and there is no virtual planet to import. This has led us to a point where we need more than one earth planet annually to meet our requirements, thus marking the Earth Overshoot Day. Since 1970 there is 95% increase in population

This year the theme of the Earth day is youth education on environmental and climate issues. This coincides with the vision of Dubai based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) who has taken the initiatives to launch a unique and world class earth/soil education facility “Emirates Soil Museum” at its headquarter. The Emirates Soil Museum was officially launched on 8 December 2016 and sponsored by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). Emirates Soil Museum is Unique Facility for Youth Education on Soils, Environment, Climate and the Planet Earth

External view of Emirates Soil Museum

What is Earth Overshoot Day? The date of the given year when humanity’s demand for ecological resources (ecological footprint) and services exceeds what earth can regenerate in that year. According to Global Footprint Network, in the year 2016, 8 August was the Earth overshoot day compared to 13 August in 2015. Business as usual will lead us to require 2 Earth planets when Earth overshoot day will reach 30 June. Presently 1.7 earth planets are required to meet humanity’s demand on earth’s ecosystem World Earth Day and Youth Education The very first Earth Day was celebrated in US on 22 April 1970 and attracted by over 20 million Americans. The General Assembly of the United Nations recognizing that Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit, and noting that Earth Day is observed each year in many countries, decided to designate 22 April as International Mother Earth Day through resolution A/RES/63/278, adopted in 2009. Presently Earth Day is celebrated in over 195 countries.

The Earth Day is not only dedicated to youth education, it calls to all walks of life to observe and raise awareness of the day. At this Earth Day the world is launching an ambitious goal of achieving global climate and environmental literacy by Earth Day 2020. In the UAE, in addition to other organizations, Emirates Soil Museum may be considered a central facility to achieve climate and environment literacy of the youth. In order to achieve this ambitious goal ICBA will coordinate with various organizations in the UAE to further the cause of youth education on soils, environmental and climate issues. The Emirates Soil Museum is dedicated to youth education through exterior and interior exhibits spread over the i) Soil Techno Park - where youth is taught on five themes related to earth and soils and learn landscape features with the concept “above the ground” and through ii) interior exhibits in the Emirates Soil Museum where youth observe “underground” soil story, where various soil features are linked through augmented reality to facilitate education. We hope the youth will be fluent on environmental issues and on unprecedented threats to the mother Earth

Paving the way

InterContinental Dubai Marina

Brian Gooch (left) started his career in the tile industry in England over 30 years ago, working for British tile manufactures in the UK. He relocated to Dubai 10 years ago to work for a leading tile manufacture throughout the GCC and Far East, working closely with key decision makers, architects and contractors throughout the region. In 2014 Gooch established his own company Tile Line, with the aim of supplying premium tiles direct from the factory, enabling him to offer the highest quality products at the most competitive prices. With his unique route to market and extensive experience within the GCC, Tile Line has been exposed to many opportunities in the region. In 2016 Viewgres confirmed an agreement with Tile Line and subsequently Gooch is now the exclusive representative of Viewgres throughout the Middle East and GCC. What makes Viewgres tiles an exciting proposition for specifiers and contractors in the GCC? Viewgres is already a well-established brand worldwide and now it’s the turn of the GCC to enjoy their beautifully captured designs and products. Their technical specifications have been tested and developed worldwide, including to US, Australian and European standards. The tiles are available in two thicknesses, 1cm and 2 cm, and can be used anywhere, including horizontal cladding on tall towers, inside or outside swimming pools, and large landscaping areas for hotels, driveways and shopping malls. Viewgres is a game changer in landscape design and the only limit is thinking outside the box. The product is so durable it can be used pretty much anywhere, inside or out.

How do Viewgres compare to what is already available within the GCC market? In 2009 Viewgres produced the world’s first fine Porcelain Tile with a thickness of 2cm. This thickness creates a porcelain full body brick (paver) which is shaped by high pressure and burned by cold drying and high temperatures. With natural clays and green renewable materials as the main raw material, and with ultra-low water absorption of 0.5% or less, a breaking strength of 13,000N, and with an abrasive resistance of PEI4-5 (R11),Viewgres’ product can challenge any other worldwide manufacturer. Have you installed this product anywhere within the GCC? We have been promoting Viewgres for the past few months and have already received an amazing response from all sectors. We recently completed a project at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dubai Marina where the tiles were used successfully in several different locations. We are also currently working on several more exciting projects in the region. Will you be launching any new products at Middle East Stone Show in May? We will be launching the entire Viewgres collection at the show and will have all products on display for viewing. We will also be revealing the latest products from the natural stone cladding company, Norstone (www.norstone.ae) What can visitors to your stand at Middle East Stone expect to see? We are going to show all the available sizes and we’re also going to create some beautiful design concepts using the two different thicknesses combined, thereby creating a unique 3D concept which is a must see.

Towering architecture dominates its skyline, however the spaces between these structures ‘The Urban Public Realm’ is as important as the buildings themselves. Cracknell, a leading landscape architectural consultancy with five international offices and their head office in Dubai, continues to contribute significantly to the public realm by addressing connectivity through the urban language. Robert Shakespeare, Group Design Director, explains, “The connectivity of the public realm in Dubai continues to evolve through the recent linkage of the Dubai Canal and The Creek incorporating Business Bay. Connecting destinations through urban spaces brings with it many social, amenity and commercial benefits, and creates a connected, coherent and more ‘liveable’ city.” To illustrate this, Shakespeare points to three key landscape projects by Cracknell connected through the Dubai Canal, Dubai Design District (d3), Business Bay and Volante Residences. “The Cracknell head office is now located at d3, which is quickly developing into a thriving design hub and events venue for the arts. Before the Canal was fully opened, d3 was somewhat detached from the rest of the city; however, it now has a water taxi station which will provide direct links to Business Bay, Festival City and many other destinations along the water corridor.”

Cracknell is also a key player in landscape design for Business Bay promenade, a 6km winding stretch of recreational walkways and activated spaces linked to adjacent building developments. Looking onto impressive views of the Bay is high-end residential tower, Volante Residences, featuring elegant podium and roof terrace designs by Cracknell. “There is an exciting fusion of residential, commercial and recreational spaces which are integrated through the canal” said Shakespeare. “Significant public realm developments around the Creek are continuing and complement the city’s evolving connectivity. Other waterfront developments are currently taking shape, which will introduce further recreation, hospitality, retail and F&B to the mix.”

I news and events

Profile® Porous Ceramics outperform peat in Middle East Sand By Joe Betulius, VP of Marketing, Profile Products Golf and landscape professionals in the Gulf region of the Middle East have long recognized the need to amend native sands in order to support a healthy stand of vegetation. Among the challenges presented by sand is its low porosity, poor infiltration and very poor waterholding capacity. In addition to these well-known, poor physical characteristics that are common in the native sands of this region, there are also several common chemical traits that can impede the establishment of sustainable vegetation. Among the many options for amending native sand soils, Profile® Porous Ceramics claims to have a beneficial impact on the root zone, crucial for establishing long-term vegetation.

On the chemical side, the region’s sand has a far higher pH level than is ideal, which inhibits plants from taking up nutrients efficiently. Physically, the sand presents many problems when put to a sieve analysis, which examines the granular size of the soil. The small grain size of the Gulf region sand is not conducive to strong vegetative growth, without significant amendments. The soil’s porosity across the board is too low for healthy growth. This low porosity is seen in the sand’s ability to retain air and its ability to retain and share water with root structures. Initial Soil Conditions After a complete evaluation of the test plots and their chemical compositions, it was evident that the substrates were composed of the fine sands that are typical of this region. Many of the chemical characteristics that commonly afflict establishing vegetation in this area were not found to be excessive. This allowed the trial to compare how the physical properties of the substrates could be ameliorated to ultimately improve the outcome of establishing vegetation.

24

To put these claims to the test, Profile Porous Ceramics were tested against the most commonly used amendment on the market, peat moss. In a trial conducted in the United Arab Emirates, both the physical and chemical characteristics of the native sands were studied to determine its makeup. At the end of the three-month test, vegetation and root characteristics were analyzed to determine which amendment was the most beneficial to vegetative growth. Native Sand Characteristics As mentioned, the sandy substrates of the Middle East’s Gulf region contain several factors that make it extremely challenging to support vegetation. The table below shows both the chemical and physical properties that must be overcome or mitigated for successful planting.

The Process The goal of this comparison was to examine the advances in amelioration processes. The study was conducted on two plots, with all things being equal except for the amendments selected to treat the soil and improve its physical ability to sustain vegetation. Plot one would be amended using Profile Porous Ceramics (PPC), a porous ceramic particle that has been utilized extensively around the world to amend the chemical and physical attributes of poor soils for decades. Despite its wide usage on golf course rootzones in the Middle East, PPC is just beginning to be used in landscape soils in the Gulf region of the Middle East. Plot two was designed to represent the most commonly used treatment method in the region; incorporation of peat moss. Each plot was treated to manufacturer specified levels and integrations. Each 240 square meter plot contained the native fine sand common to the region.

January 8, 2017 Conclusions Over the course of the three month test period, Profile Porous Ceramic amended plots established turf much more quickly, and also delivered a thicker turf density than the peat moss treated plot. The turf on the PPC plot also showed a much deeper root structure and better overall color and appearance. In addition, PPC was able to create a larger soil water reservoir, in this case about 675 liters of water. Due to its enhanced water-holding and capillary features, the PPC slowly releases this water to the plant. The increased reservoir and slow release of water reduces irrigation frequency. Water infiltrates the substrate quickly and the increased air porosity of the PPC amended soil allows roots to extend deeper, accessing water throughout the soil.

Finally, fertilizer usage is reduced because the lower alkaline soil pH allows for improved nutrient uptake by the vegetation. This rootzone health is vital to success, regardless if the end result is turf, vegetative cover or even flower beds. A follow up greenhouse trial utilizing petunias (Petunia hybrida) showed similar results to the outdoor turf study. PPC amended soils outperformed pure Middle East sand in the establishment of healthier plants that reached maturity at an accelerated rate. In the end, the results were definitive. Properly amending substrates to account for both physical and chemical deficiencies and toxicities greatly increase the likelihood of reaching vegetative goals. And one of the most effective amendments for this purpose is the Profile Porous Ceramics particle.

A greenhouse trial of Petunia hybrid found similar results to the turf study, with a 20% PPC mixture (right) outperforming 100% Middle East sand.

Farming Kindergarten is a challenge to counter these issues. Located next to a big shoe factory, and designed for 500 children of the factory’s workers, the building is conceived as a continuous green roof, providing food and agriculture experience to children, as well as an extensive playground to the sky. The green roof is a triple-ring shape drawn with a single stroke, encircling three courtyards inside as safe playgrounds. Recently, an experimental vegetable garden was realized on its top. Five different vegetables are planted in 200m2 garden for agriculture education. All functions are accommodated under this roof. As the roof lowers to the courtyard it provides access to the upper level and vegetable gardens on top- the place where children learn the importance of agriculture and recover connection to nature.

The building is made of a continuous narrow strip with two side operable windows which maximize the cross ventilation and natural lighting. Additionally, architectural and mechanical energy-saving methods are comprehensively applied including but not limited to green roof as insulation, green facade as shading and solar water heating. These devices are designed visibly and play an important role in the children’s sustainable education. Factory waste water is recycled to irrigate greenery and flush toilets. As a result, the kindergarten is operated without air conditioners in the classrooms despite being located in a harsh tropical climate. According to post-occupancy record issued 10 months after completion, the building saves 25 percent of energy and 40 percent of fresh water compared to baseline building performance, reducing its running cost greatly.

The building is designed for low-income factory workers’ children; therefore construction budget is quite limited. Therefore, the combination of local materials and low-tech construction methods are applied, which also help minimize the environmental impact as well as promote local industry. Thanks to simple rigid frame with economical materials, the construction cost per one square meter is only 500 USD including finishes and equipment, which is competitively cheap even within the Vietnamese market. I interview

When did Masdar first start business in the GCC region? Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, was launched in 2006 and Masdar City broke ground in 2008 and by 2010 the first six buildings were already completed. The original master plan by Foster & Partners was prepared in 2007-2008, with revisions in 2011. A further Concept Master Plan was approved by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) in 2014. The detailed master plans for the existing and major future expansion phases have also been signed off by the UPC and are in line with Abu Dhabi’s 2030 Economic Vision. Masdar Institute for Science and Technology was among the first projects to begin construction and the 10 MW solar photovoltaic array was among the first completed projects. Soon after, in April 2013, Masdar inaugurated the 100 MW Shams 1, the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant at that time.

In conversation with

Peter Spellmeyer Landscape Manager Masdar

What differentiates landscape designs here in the Middle East compared to other areas? It’s about water and outdoor thermal comfort - how visitors, guests, residents and workers use the environment, and then create opportunities so that they are able to use it more. High temperature and humidity make it a harsh environment at certain times of the year, so one needs to look for sustainable designs to extend that use. Planting shading trees is obviously a really important consideration, but with the planting of trees you are also consuming precious water, so it’s all about balance. Spaces that are comfortable are used more often, so there’s never only one issue to consider, it’s all integrated. When I came on board with this project, the approach of designing for the environment based on the direction of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and the Urban Planning Council, reflecting the needs of “Estidama” was really forward looking and it helped to promote sustainable landscaping, such as nurturing native plant species. Native plant species are actually very difficult to find. They are only now being looked at by local commercial nurseries. But native plants need less water obviously. At Masdar City, 75

percent of the plant species we use are drought adapted or native species. This is just one aspect of how we are trying to develop the public realm in ways that are connected, innovative, flexible and sustainable. What are the main challenges of doing business in the current GCC market post recession? Masdar City is a growing community and despite global economic challenges, it continues to attract investors, business and residents. In fact, we are experiencing the most rapid development in the city’s relatively short history. More than 175,000 square metres of completed buildings are fully leased and occupied, a further 900,000 square metres of projects at Masdar City are either planned for construction or have firm development agreements in place. Around 2,000 apartments are either built, under construction or in design through Masdar or third-party investors. This will bring the residential population at Masdar City to more than 3,500 in the near term. The working population at the City is also growing – from around 2,000 today to more than 5,000 by 2018/2019.

par, but it’s very sophisticated. There are obviously differences, such as the plant nurseries in this region. In the US, for example, where the nursery industry as a commercial venture has been around for 80 years, the offerings they are able to respond to are probably wider. Here, the maturity of plants is typically younger, but it is a very sophisticated market, which has responded to market influences to provide materials that are well suited to the environment. There are a lot of competing demands for water. Ground water is scarce and desalinization of seawater is expensive and needs a lot of energy. For Masdar City landscaping we are using only recycled water from the authorities and we want to use it in very thoughtful ways. Do you think that the international standards for the landscaping industry are too rigid and unrealistic or can they easily be applied when executing projects? Landscapes need to be attractive, creative, comfortable, but they also need to be safe and sustainable. International standards for landscaping are related to environmental safety and to public

What changes need to be adopted in the GCC landscaping industry to become on a par with the rest of the world? In many respects, the landscaping industry here is not only on

What advice can you give to the aspiring landscape architect? It’s important that the landscape architect these days can take on a multifunctional role, being both designer and environmentalist. My advice is to be as rounded as one can possibly be. Landscape architects do have a unique viewpoint on how to use public spaces, and I think it’s important that they have a voice and that they use it. One of the key concepts that I believe in is “stewardship”, especially in the public realm, that’s a very important aspect of what landscape architects do. It’s a big responsibility to create spaces that are comfortable, safe, well-used, flexible and innovative.

What projects are you currently involved in? At the moment, we are working to finish the first phase of the “Bikeway Fitness Trail”, which has just recently opened. There is still work to be done, as the trail is going to be extended. The project complements our strategy for active recreation, which is part of a healthy city. It is linked with Masdar Park, another project that opened recently. Currently, the bikeway starts at Masdar Park and is 2.6 km long. Ultimately, the Bikeway Fitness Trail is intended to extend along the entire perimeter of Masdar City, making it 10 km long. The other exciting project is the productive landscape area, which is basically a space set aside for community gardens.

TREX AD: RD

What is the most challenging aspect of your work? Time is one of the greatest challenges - having the patience to understand that cities evolve over time. I’m sometimes frustrated at the speed of development, as I want to see the landscape translated from design into reality but sometimes speed is a good thing.

As someone who is well established within the industry, what do you see as the main challenges we face in the near future? Greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, water scarcity; urban spaces are primary challenges that affect landscape architecture. The response is to make sustainable practices the standard, retiring or minimizing old practices such as irrigating, fertilizing or using non-native plants that eventually damage ecosystems. These are issues that the world is looking at today and I think the UAE is playing an important leadership role in researching and developing sustainable solutions.

welfare. They generally provide useful guidance and I don’t think they are too stringent. In fact, the levels here are more competitive than other parts of the world. Being a desert country with challenging weather conditions and minimal rainfall, the UAE needs different approaches to landscaping compared to other parts of the world. Planting trees may create shade and reduce carbon emissions, but most species require a lot of water, so they are not sustainable. In terms of international standards, Masdar has its own restricted materials list, which makes us even more diligent than other regions in complying with recycling.

to expand its footprint and holdings, all the while taking the visitor’s experience into the twenty-first century. Although once a former gravel pit, the Rock Garden was originally the centerpiece of an ambitious Depression-era project led by its founder, Thomas Baker McQuesten to establish it as the gateway to the cities of Hamilton and Burlington in southern Ontario. He sought to beautify what would eventually become the Rock Garden and the Sunken Garden of McMaster University in Hamilton, and subsequently the Cootes Paradise Marsh, all three now within the holdings of the RBG. The renewed garden officially opened to the public in the spring of 2016, less than three years from the launch date in 2013. The forested rock walls of the former quarry provide a dramatic three-dimensional backdrop which reinforces the sensory experiences of the sublime in this very earthly garden. The water then flows under an arched bridge and meanders in a man-made channel throughout the garden. As with the placement, range, and scope of the plantings, the presence of water is integrated with new technologies available in lighting and sound. The pool basins are made of concrete, with stone coping, porcelain tile cladding, and decorative black pebble bottom. The design of the arched bridge consists of a salvaged stone slab, with new hardwood handrails and stainless steel cables, tensions, and posts. The collection The changes amplify the appreciation of the collection and experience for the visitor, whatever the season or weather. The new garden respects the look and feel of the iconic heritage, while celebrating the beginning of a new era. The repair and restoration of damaged features on the pathways, as well as the introduction of new ones, have together broadened the understanding of the collection by the public by increasing its exposure and access to the plants. In order to assist the RBG staff in the future with cataloguing the plant collections, JRS also prepared detailed planting records to contribute to this public outreach. The new plants and species that have been added rely on flower, foliage, fall color and fruit to add layered seasonal interest. The strategy reduces the historic reliance on planting annuals to achieve bursts of colour. The new horticulture design reflects a forward looking approach, one that embraces sustainable trends in Canadian garden design, management, and best practices. Visitors are surrounded by 28,000 new plants in over 750 species, bringing the garden’s total to 143,800 plants in 2,411 species, as well as 277 bird species and 37 mammal species.

Funding The project began with the commitment from the Canadian federal and Ontario provincial governments with a shared contribution of $14 million, and grew with the support of 2,000 financial donors in the community to a total of $20 million. This was a communitywide outpouring of commitment, in the belief that the renovations will nurture many more generations for which it has already inspired a love of nature. The support not only increased the size of the funding, but also the scope of the amenities that could be anticipated. In the process, the garden was expanded into table lands adjacent to the heritage garden within the confines of the former quarry, growing to 8.0 hectares (20 acres) from the original quarry bowl’s 2.2-hectare (5.5-acre) limit. In addition to new parking, the repair and restoration of damaged features, along with the introduction of new ones, as well as the provision of modern lighting and sound systems in conjunction with a new Visitor Centre, have all been developed within the heritage framework.

New venues Although it was already one of the most popular and largest botanical gardens in North America, the goal through the master plan and its implementation were to increase the Rock Garden’s public visibility, presence, and functionality. Improving accessibility and circulation to all areas for all guests was therefore essential, as well as the provision of a venue to host events all year. The introduction of a more sustainable planting plan characterized by environmental benefits significantly addresses infrastructure issues. The collaboration with CS&P Architects of Toronto, on the new Visitor Centre, coordinated the landscape design with the building’s program, which includes a restaurant and event spaces. From there, the visitor is free to choose whether to access the gardens, enter the restaurant café, or view the gardens through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Visitor Centre. A welcome new and further expanded scope came about through the promotion of the project, and particularly through the generosity of the Weston family, for an entry courtyard to overlook the new garden areas as well as the heritage Rock Garden, and ultimately serve as a flexible event space for weddings, cocktail gatherings, private parties, conferences, and the like. As an essay on the quarry, the new Dalglish Family Courtyard features large flagstone slabs in a courtyard fully enclosed by seven-foot high stone walls planted with alpine/rockery plants, as well as a calming water fountain composed of 16 spigots that empty into a large basin.

The expanded water feature creates a continuous meandering channel in the bowl of the garden which connects with the surrounding table lands.

The bold colors in the horticultural design reinforce the increased diversity that is part of the sustainable plan that brings increased environmental benefits to the maintenance of the garden.

The studio was chosen to create the architecture and interior design of the resort, after being shortlisted from ten internationally recognised design companies. The long inaccessible Jabal Al Akhdar, Arabic for “The Green Mountain” is a towering massif on the Sultanate of Oman’s vast Saiq Plateau. The luxury resort is located on a 66,000 m² cliff edge plot, with a total built-up area of 24,000m² including 115 keys, six restaurants and lounges, a signature spa and recreation facilities. Before embarking on the journey, Lotfi Sidirahal, Atelier Pod’s principle, spent several days with his team visiting the area in order to fully identify with the site’s locality on architectural, communal, and traditional scopes before initiating the resort’s design. The immersive excursion included meeting the mountains’ communities, re-drawing the architectural

and landscape details of Birkat al Mawz and Jabreen fort, and of course exploring the primitive vernacular typologies that testify to the people’s historical lifestyle. This exploration phase preceding the design task was crucial for the team in order for them to create a unique and contemporary resort combined with the heritage of the region. The Atelier Pod team considered forms, volume, light, use of materials, construction and decorative details of traditional Omani architecture and how interiors displayed harmony of form and function, as well as how they respond to the local climate and culture. The studio contemplated long and hard on how to draw from these conventions in the project’s inception, ranging from the simple massing in the design of Bahla Fort to the delicate elegance of Jabrin Castle. The approach of Atelier Pod involved the innovative adaptation of vernacular elements to express the essence of local heritage.

I resort

Key elements in the character of Oman’s architecture are integrated into the resort’s concept without overshadowing its design. The resort reflects the fortification typology of the Nizwa region’s stronghold, ensconcing guests in modern ramparts inspired by the commanding mountain citadels and re-imagined with sophisticated modern interiors. The sense of drama and beauty is heightened by the play of light and shade, the texture of the natural materials, rustling vegetation, and the sound of flowing water. The designer configures the visitors’ experience in sequences in order to arouse distinctive emotions inspired by the view, the architecture, and the landscape. Sidirahal explains, “We designed the entrance with the idea of a fort in mind. The exterior, with its great wooden doors, impressively showcases commanding strength. There is a dramatic contrast upon entry as the interior gives a delicate and voluptuous impression with a majestic open courtyard featuring lush green terraces and a falaj.” In the lobby, the guests are greeted by a wooden geodesic dome spanning over ten metres in diameter with a peaceful contemporary

42

fountain centred beneath it. As they make their way through to the central courtyard decorated by revisited Omani arcades, they can catch a first glimpse of a striking rectilinear frame, increasing the perspectival depth of the mountain silhouettes, stretching over the garden terraces and beyond to the dramatic gorge. With a large open fireplace serving as a central focal point, the courtyard is unmistakably the heart of the resort. An emanating protective warmth contrasts with the breathtaking cliff-side, injecting an invading vastness in the pool, rooms, and villas. The patio brings together a souk, a coffee shop, a library, as well as pathways leading to the main restaurant and banquet facilities. A freestanding tower on the western side of the courtyard is a testament to the ancient Omani Keep, or Burj, distinctive by its conical curvature and smooth encircling ramp, with an otherwise contemporary function. The tower houses a lounge and a specialty restaurant while also serving as an observation tower for a night under a blanket of stars. The rooftop was inspired by the high firing platforms of Nakhal Fort on one hand, and the rooftop courtyard of Jabreen Castle on the other.

BRINGING COLOURS AND LIGHT TO YOUR LANDSCAPE

43 www.mmcite.com

I resort Atelier Pod conceived every aspect of the resort to enrich the guest experience, designing not only architecture, interior design, and artworks but also the resort’s lighting design in collaboration with LDC Madrid, and landscape design with HED London. The meticulous attention brought to every nook and corner gave birth to an unprecedented resort in the region. Designed to incorporate a reinvented sense of timelessness in the vein of rooted luxury, the elegant interiors reincarnate the surrounding culture, exuding a minimalist style infused with warm, rich colours alongside traditional features represented in local artwork, Arabesque lanterns, and handmade pottery. Indigenous iconic mountain roses, pomegranates and marine fossils permeate design choices, as reflected in the décor and artwork. Describing the eighty pieces of custom designed furniture as “contemporary interpretations of traditional Omani design”, the studio used the patterns and architectural details found in doorframes, ancient ceilings, and traditional chests in order to generate a complete furniture line adapted to luxury resort standards. As Sidirahal puts it, “We tried to continue the Omani design DNA by inventing the missing genes.” The ultimate aesthetic is never in contradiction with its environment and yet never the same.

A total of 115 luxury guest rooms and villas overlook either the dramatic canyon or tranquil gardens. The resort’s 82 Deluxe Rooms boast a spacious bedroom, amongst the largest in the country, and a spa-like bathroom complete with a rain shower and separate bath alongside a balcony. Meanwhile, the 33 one or two-bedroom villas grant guests an intimate escape, each with a private infinity pool overlooking the cliff or hiding in an exotic garden. Other unique design elements include the spa, featuring the falaj-inspired canals, instilling the quiet sound of flowing water all throughout the resort. In the heart of the spa, a mysterious rough stone cube shields the sensual hammam, perpetuating the philosophy of contrast used by the designer. The Omani tradition of integrating the ancient water channel system, called “falaj” with cleansing spaces was adopted to offer intimacy to secluded areas around the spa. These areas harbor Jacuzzis, daybeds, and hammocks. This majestic resort is the fourth collaboration between Atelier Pod and Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spa.

Based on architecture design and site condition, designers get inspiration from “small island” and “rain”. “Central island is floating on the endless water surface, wind blows and drizzle is patting against the flat water with blossoming ripples.”

The island is surrounded by drizzle and ripples and the flat water becomes more dynamic, so that people in reality can experience a zen feeling in modern urban life. To make everything slow down and calm down is the design purpose for this project. Through the use of Chinese painting, designers strive to present a lifestyle out of the perspective still frame: drizzle –the zen sculpture expressing raindrop is integrated with water, meanwhile designers integrate the culture background of Nanjing specialty Yuhua Stone to arrange landscape stone. Island - the water-surrounded building is referred to as an island on the water, the surface of the river – water feature is surrounding the building to create a zen space.

Designers utilize the ginkgo tree court on the frontcourt space to shield the interference from surrounding environment and get access to a static space from a dynamic one. The ginkgo tree courts on both sides highlight the central entrance plaza, and combined with mirror water feature to create a feature paving plaza. The soft furnishings and lighting effect create the ceremonial sense of entrance space. The contrast technique is adopted in

the design of exhibition area. The mirror water feature and leisure platform create a big space and contrast with the enclosed small space of entrance porch. The changing of space makes people’s eyes light up and suddenly become clear-minded.The sculpture on water and art seating on platform create a zen atmosphere of the whole space. In terms of the sample area, designers adopt a method that makes the big space bigger and small space smaller
