Dubai Municipality mulls adding comprehensive design requirements in university courses

The Building Licensing Department of Dubai Municipality, in coordination with the universities of the country, is studying launching a project to add a specialized course that caters to the conditions and requirements of the comprehensive design, encompassing all categories, including the People of Determination and the elderly, in the university courses which are studied by students of architecture. The move is part of its efforts to achieve the vision of the wise leadership and is in line with the efforts of the Government of Dubai towards an inclusive society in which the People of Determination will be able to live happily and comfortably through one of the most important focuses of the national policy of easy access to the built environment. “This will contribute to ensuring that future engineers are equipped with the knowledge required by the local labor market, reflecting a positive image and effective education in

New transportation guide launched by asla 7 principles developed to foster smarter transportation networks. Transportation infrastructure is a significant component of the public realm, but we can do better than build yet another car-centric landscape, according to a new guide on transportationlaunched today by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The ASLA guide provides in-depth solutions and case studies to help communities create transportation systems that foster safe, equitable and resilient ways of getting around. Its sections on regional, urban, neighborhood and street systems reflect seven key principles: Low-emission: Sustainable transportation systems don’t contribute to climate change; instead, they encourage lowemission modes of transportation such as mass transit, biking, or walking. Sustainable land use practices such as transit oriented development facilitate multi-modal systems where residents can easily walk or bike to meet basic daily needs. Landscape architects plan regions, cities, and neighborhoods and design streets that support widespread adoption of low-emission transportation options. Active: A lifestyle organized around human-powered transportation choices such as walking and biking is healthy. A 2016 report found that walkable, transit-oriented communities increased physical fitness and mental health. Residents of such communities were also more likely to meet or exceed daily physical activity recommendations. Landscape architects encourage active transportation by designing safe, pleasant routes for walking and biking. Safe: The World Resources Institute estimates that more than 1 million lives could be saved annually from wider adoption of traffic calming measures such as lower speed limits, reduced lane widths, and protected medians. Landscape architects design for safety and help cities eliminate serious injuries and fatalities on roadways. Equitable: Access to such healthy, sustainable transportation options should be viewed as a right. All residents—regardless of their income, race, age, disability, religion or national origin—should have access to affordable, safe, accessible, multi-modal transportation options that allow them to fully participate in the community. Landscape architects facilitate

community-driven planning, policy making, and design that includes all members of the community, especially those most affected by poverty, communities of color, and historically-marginalized communities. Resilient: Extreme weather events can easily shut down transportation networks. Multi-modal transportation systems are resilient to the uncertainties posed by climate change, such as rising temperatures, more frequent and intense storms, and sea level rise. Landscape architects design systems with multiple, interconnected transportation options that create redundancy and flexibility, qualities that help communities evacuate and rebuild quickly in the face of natural disasters. Ecological: A sustainable transportation network is ecological, working with natural systems to capture and filter stormwater, reduce flooding, support pollinator species, strengthen biodiversity, and protect wildlife populations. With green infrastructure, wildlife crossings, pollinator highways, and environmentally-sensitive roadway alignment, design, and construction, landscape architects integrate nature into our transportation networks, reaping the benefits of ecosystem services while minimizing conflict between humans and wildlife. Beautiful: As a major component of our landscape and public realm, transportation infrastructure should be beautiful, inviting, and memorable. Thoughtful design creates durable, lasting spaces that forge community identity, equity, and ownership. Landscape architects ensure that transportation infrastructure contributes to the aesthetic value of the built environment. The sustainable transportation guide was shaped by an expert advisory panel, including Diane Jones Allen, D. Eng, ASLA, PLA, associate professor and program director of landscape architecture, University of Texas, Arlington, and principal, DesignJones LLC; Jean Senechal Biggs, ASLA, senior project manager, DKS Associates; and Robert Loftis, PLA, ASLA, associate landscape architect, MRWM Landscape Architects. Reducing outdoor water consumption in your home

Many residential consumers with gardens or landscaped areas tend to complain about high water bills. What can residents do to reduce their outdoor water consumption? Irrigation accounts for around 40 per cent of the average villa water consumption in Dubai. This is often due to inefficient irrigation methods, suboptimal landscape designs or unidentified leakages. To reduce outdoor water consumption, residential consumers need to focus 3 key areas: • Optimizing the design of their landscape with hardscaping and local species • Adopting efficient irrigation technologies • Devising a structured watering plan in terms of zoning and timings How can you design or redesign your landscape to make it more water efficient? Efficient designing/redesigning of a landscape must start with the identification of the available space around your home, while considering the challenges related to drainage, slopes and different types of soils, among other factors. Once that assessment is done, it is recommended to: Maximize the use of hardscaping and artificial greenery, this will reduce the overall watering requirements in your garden. Use local and drought resistant species that do not require too much watering to survive in Dubai’s hot environment. You may want to consult a plant nursery to ensure you are choosing the most adequate plants and species for your landscaping needs and garden characteristics. For example, having at least one big tree in your garden creates shading, which cools the landscape and slows down the evaporation from the surrounding areas Can you name some water efficient technologies that can be used for irrigation? Selecting the most efficient irrigation system for your garden will make a big

difference in your water consumption. It is important to stay away from manual hoses and irrigation as much as possible. • The use of drip irrigation systems is often recommended as they provide slow, steady trickles of water to plants at their roots through a network of hidden pipes and hoses. • Other efficient solutions include smart sprinkler systems with time controls or moisture sensors and installing rotating sprinkler nozzles. These nozzles shoot multi-trajectory, rotating streams that distribute water slowly and uniformly and can be adjusted to suit specific site conditions. What is the best approach to develop a good watering plan? • Create specific ‘hydrozones’ by grouping plants and vegetation with similar watering needs. This reduces water wastage and ensure that none of your plants are over or under-watered. For instance: – Large plants have deeper roots and need more water, but they can store water longer, which means less frequent watering – Small plants on the other hand have smaller roots and need less water, but they need to be watered more frequently – Meanwhile, some drought tolerant plants can live without water for a long time – For lawn and grass areas, the type of soil used determines the amount of water required • Timing and duration of irrigation is also critical and often overlooked: – Water your garden during the coolest time of the day, i.e., either before sunrise or after sunset, allows leaves and roots to absorb the maximum amount of water and reduces evaporation – Watering in multiple short sessions (3-4 minutes) rather than one long session allows your lawn and plants to better absorb moisture

To create a perfect outdoor entertainment setting for a minimalistic design enthusiast, we blended the outdoor elements with the natural landscape. A large swimming pool, a Jacuzzi and, a cooking station calls for a pool party. Building upon present elements, the existing swimming pool was used as the guiding factor with elements complimenting the pool. Light travertine flooring was used to make the landscape blend with the interiors and unifying it as one unit. Hierarchy of soft-scape was created with raised and flush planters. Boundary walls of the villa were adorned with softcape making it visually aesthetic and appealing. Instead of opting for freestanding furniture, planter seating was introduced, merging it with the landscape. Stepping stones with grass were introduced between the paving to break the monotony and define spaces. A simple yet elegant feature wall was created with a splash of grey to provide a unique space and a visual impact from the villas interiors. With defined spaces, loads of natural elements and outdoor seating, this newly-renovated space elegantly blends comfortable and outdoor living in a minimalistic setting.

I RESIDENTIAL VILLAS

Our second residential project at Millennium Estates, required us to create a dream home encompassing different amenities and features in a limited space. Located at the premium community of Millennium Estate, Fiona Environs was tasked to design a residential villa that had all the elements of a comfortable outdoor space – a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, a cooking station, seating areas and a vegetable garden. The challenge was to encompass all these elements in a natural way and create an experience that could be admired by the entire family, every single day. The idea was to create a landscape that not only complements the villa surrounding but also the avenues and streetscape

of the community. By striking the balance between hardscape and softscape elements, strategically using the space and using shady colours to complement the surrounding element, a whole new vision for the “dream home” was created. As you enter the villa, there are six palm trees aligned with the entrance door of the villa. This is a strong visual that provides a shaded path towards the entrance. A small lawn extends to the right side with tropical planting, giving a sense of relaxation. A stamped concrete pathway allows access to the back garden through the most intricate pathway of the villa, lined with Wedelia Trilobata and Caesalpinia Pulchirrima as groundcovers, placed with trees like Plumeria Obtusa that create a playful experience with its bright big white flowers. The back garden has the swimming pool that is perfectly lined with the geometry of the villa. The client wanted a steam/sauna room as well as a Jacuzzi that compliments the existing pool of the site. We modified the pool adding these elements along with the barbecue area. Adjacent seating and bougainvillea creepers created a perfect ambiance for a relaxed seating area. This entire space provides a perfect fusion of entertainment and relaxation. With the added effect of the sound of water flowing through and soft lighting, this space instantly became the family’s favourite place to relax and connect with each other.

Damac HillS By International Design Group Working in the Middle East in the realm of landscape design and architecture is a challenging but rewarding process. However, we at International Design Group (IDG) in the UK thrive in doing so and have made a great success of it. Working with an exciting range of client’s and consultants, we have a wide portfolio in the region and always welcome the opportunity to work there. However, there is one particular project which stands out for us: Damac Hills by Akoya in Dubai. Currently, Dubai is one of the most desirable and ambitious estate markets in the world. This means that Damac Hills’ claim to become the new ‘Beverley Hills of Dubai’ is very serious, with some hefty baggage. Given the prestige, IDG were delighted to be involved and provide high-quality design work so the project can strive for, and meet, this target.

Large communal pool areas were designed for maximum use while maintaining a chic design overall. Here, you can also see how effectively a pool area, a play area and an outdoor exercise area, were all designed cohesively together in some areas.

The impressive and forward-thinking development is more than one million square metres of private villas (for 40,000 people), hotels, shops and offices, parks and there is also a championship golf course. The project is large and complex with a multitude of moving parts all of which were crucial to understand in order to comprehend the development in its entirety. IDG was brought on board in 2013 during the early stages to assist in resolving the masterplanning, working alongside CallisonRTKL, a globally-known design consultancy firm. As legal boundaries from the masterplanning stages were completed, the project moved into detailed stages and IDG were invited to continue their involvement. The development is an incredibly large undertaking – seeing it on the drawing boards and computer screens when carrying

out the design gave a slightly inaccurate feeling of its real size and scale – and there are more than 25 different communities designed around the championship golf course in the site’s centre. Each one is a unique shape, design and layout, and consist of large clusters of villas, apartments blocks, or both. Due to their own size, the communities with names such as ‘Trump’ and ‘Paramount’, the detailed stages for them alone have taken a while to design through. But even though Damac Hills is a large land area, it has an extremely high expectation on quality, and is a development in a dynamic property market that continually shifts like the sand that surrounds the site. This means that landscape schemes for each community have had to encompass a high level of quality, modern design techniques, and contemporary materials and features, and combining them all to create memorable, functional and exquisite spaces. Bespoke landscape architecture had to be applied to the different communities within an overall, cohesive scheme, from parking to street side. Hardscape materials had to be carefully selected to create a cohesive, but sensible, palette to ensure that a contemporary look, also in a hot and dry climate, was achieved but also to make sure that when materials were used across large areas the design remained true to the spirit of the place and didn’t look commercial or monotonous. Generally, a modern palette of cool greys and pale shades were chosen, using a variety of unit sizes, and then also punctuated, across the large site, with occasional darker materials at certain intervals and key areas. Aside from the paving and hardest surfaces, the materials across the landscape extended to colourful wet pour materials for play areas, composite decks for poolside areas and gravels and stones to break up street-side landscape design and complement planting. When it came to the planting, an enormous range and ‘type’ of soft landscape approaches were needed, and as such the planting needed to suitably balance interest and cohesion, while maintaining appropriate cultural and geographical selections where possible. However, statement plants and plantings also had to be designed in to achieve the level of prestige and quality that the project required. Trees were a particularly important choice in the site’s softscape palette. Generally, selections spanned geographical appropriate palm trees such as date and Alexandra palms, and extended to delightful ornamental species such as olives, rose trumpet, pink shower and royal poinciana trees. Parks and open spaces used a combination of these trees, and more, to add colour, shade and interest. However, there was also a distinct plan to use street trees as identifiers and character-markers for each community. Therefore, each community had its own tree combination, enhancing the feel of unique and recognisable clusters of villas across the site. A looser approach was used

with the shrubs, groundcover and ornamental planting with each area to be given its own planting approach, given its location and needs. Broadly speaking however, colourful and bold plants were selected; an overly commercial, restrained palette was not an option here. IDG particularly enjoyed specifying the range of plants for the development, with some favourite, stand-out species being a range of pennisetum grasses, oleanders, yuccas, ixoras and bougainvilleas. Using these plants, and others, in successful combinations, and then deploying foliage plants and other species for contrast, created vivaciously colourful schemes that meant even the smallest of pocket parks became memorable and successful, but also functional by utilising grass lawns where appropriate, too. On the streets’ sides, a very cohesive scheme with a few species, pin kerb dividers, gravel and boulders created a simple solution to a usually tricky, or at least, normal challenge. The function element to the site-wide landscape design catered for a wide range of uses. At the largest end of the scale, functional landscape design catered for and provided excellent backdrops for large pool areas and communal parks which were multi-use, right down to small, inner-community pocket parks that made for scenic routes by foot, and small-yet-pleasant places to sit. Finishing the landscape, both hard and soft, required the same attention to quality and setting. Furnishings such as benches and lighting had to be contemporary and use modern materials, while play and outdoor gym equipment had to be of the highest order to survive the conditions and be durable, but also slip seamlessly into the landscape design and be features in themselves. IDG still keep an eye on some things at Damac Hills but the project is largely down to finishing the implementation of our designs now. The landscape design we carried out over the course of many months, even years, for this flagship, monumental development is a jewel in the firm’s crown. The modern design styles, contemporary materials and location-specific treatment that each community and area gained from IDG in the design process encapsulates the company’s ability to effectively design for landscape sites in the Middle East.

Complementing the contemporary design of the villas, the road itself – pavers not asphalt – and the surrounding softscape completed a contemporary look and feel in the communities.

What is AustraBlend®Multi Mineral Root Zone Conditioner? AustraBlend® (ABMMRZC) is olive gray on Munsell soil color chart (Figure 1), mined from Australia and is rich in Nontronite clay mineral. Nontronite belongs to the triphormic phyllosilicate clay minerals group – Smectites. It consists of two Silica tetrahedron sheets and sandwiched Alumina octahedron sheet termed as 2:1 type of clay minerals (Figure 2). Nontronite is the iron (Fe) rich member of the smectite group of clay minerals. Due to crystal imperfections and isomorphous substitution it presents high negative charges which attract positively charged

nutrients (NH4, K, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn etc) on their negatively charged surfaces, which are released to plants on demand. High negative charges are a source of cation-exchange-capacity (CEC) which determines soil fertility status of soil. Other minerals in variable quantities are plagioclase, anorthoclase, clinopyroxene and quartz. Sandy soils, dominant in the UAE and GCC countries present very low CEC, hence are infertile and require frequent irrigation and nutrient application as these elements are lost through leaching. AustraBlend has shown a great capacity to improve CEC, sandy soil structure and thus significantly reduce water and nutrient applications.

AustraBlend MMRZC saves water! • • • • •

A trial at Dubai based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) revealed 50% guaranteed water saving in forage production system without reducing forage yield compared to 100% ETc water application (Figure 3). A trial on a substantial grassy plot in a newly built Sharjah palace has revealed 50% water saving with over double the biomass production (Paspalum vaginatum) with ABMMRZC application compared to 100% ETc application to similar grass plots but without ABMMRZC application. A trial has begun to improve organic fodder production yields on AustraBlend treated soils. Extensively trialed and approved for root zone amendment for FIFA pitch construction Qatar 2022. AustraBlend is planned for use as required, in the proposed Sharjah Zoo.

neighborhood: a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly road extends beyond the park in both directions, linking major roadways directly to the park’s walkways, and water from neighboring areas is treated by the park’s filtration system. Located on a large university campus in central Bangkok, close to residential, entertainment and major retail facilities, The Centenary Park is a showcase for the ecological and social impacts of landscape architecture in dense urban areas.

Chulalongkorn Centenary Park is the first critical piece of green infrastructure in the city of Bangkok. It’s designed to mitigate detrimental ecological issues and add much-needed outdoor public space to the climate-vulnerable city. The park, which contains the largest green roof in Thailand, is designed to face future uncertainties of climate change and will therefore be an invaluable addition to the local environment. It also addresses major environmental issues facing Bangkok as a rapidly-developed, hard paved city: water management and the urban heat island effect. The design and environmental effects of the park reach beyond its boundaries into the surrounding

Design challenges Landprocess and N7A Architects were tasked with designing this new public park after they won a competition for the honour. “We had to ask critical questions before the beginning design process,” explained the lead designer. These included: “What will Bangkok be like in the next 100 years from now? How can this green public space in the heart of Bangkok address the water and environmental challenges we are confronting? How can green city space help its citizens’ quality of life and how will Bangkok change climactically? Bangkok: Grey City to Green City The city of Bangkok has rapidly developed over the past half-century and now faces critical resilience issues due to threats of climate change. Agricultural land once absorbed seasonal flooding and

cycles of monsoon rain, however today these have been paved over by urban development. As the city of water, Bangkok is no longer the porous landscape, there is minimal green space and excessive construction. In recent years, Bangkok has experienced increased flooding and rising temperatures, and struggles with water management. The lack of permeable surface in the urban landscape compounds these issues. The problem is slow and silent: Bangkok is sinking. Centenary Park is a critical piece of green infrastructure for the city of Bangkok, designed to mitigate detrimental ecological issues and add much-needed outdoor public space to the grey city. By utilizing a large plot of land for productive public green space, the park gives back to the city ecology and serves as a muchneeded green oasis for Bangkokians. Park as Green Infrastructure The Centenary Park is located on a major university campus in central Bangkok. Historically, the land was donated by The Rama v, The King Chulalongkorn who founded the university for the good of its people. In recent times, the university has provided some of the commercial part of the campus that connects to the main academic core of the campus for use as a public space, as well as the Samyan new development in celebration of its centenary. The design team elevated the competition brief from merely a park

to an important piece of green infrastructure that critically address the environmental issues facing Bangkok. It not only honors the rigorous past but envisions Chulalongkorn University as the academic leader to a more resilient city in the coming century. The 30-rai (12 acre) park with a 1.3 km. green avenue is designed with many ecological functions that sustainably collect and treat water, decrease flood risks, reduce the urban heat island, and promote pedestrian and bicycle transportation and linking the city to the university campus through its commercial zone. Park as a rain tree The symbol of Chulalongkorn University, the rain tree, is the conceptual basis of the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ecology. The park should act like the roof of the Rain tree, the symbol of the university, with roots absorbing water unlike concrete roads, and creating a natural system to give back to the city. The meandering networks of tree roots overlay a rigid road network: the park reaches out into the city to reclaim some of Bangkokâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic waterscape urbanism. Centennial Park acts as tree roots for the city to absorb and control water, and as a tree canopy to provide shade and climatic relief to the neighborhood via water absorption and shade, and sustainable transit networks.

I urban park Park as a detention area The entirety of Centennial Park acts as a detention area, absorbing water in a water-stressed city. The design concept is based on its incline which helps the park to act as a container for water. At the park’s highest point is Thailand’s largest green roof interior spaces housed below including a gallery, museum, and parking. Along the inclined plane runs the water treatment system and programmed outdoor spaces, culminating in a retention pond in the “container” created by depressing the plane below grade. The park’s main lawn acts a detention area to increase water infiltration to the ground, help runoff water drain easily to the retention areas, and allow for space for flooding and retention pond overflow. The precipitation return period takes into account five-, 50-, and 100-year floods, and the lawn is large enough to detain water from these floods. Storage tanks throughout the park ensure that water can be collected and distributed to the water treatment system for zero water discharge. Every drop of water that falls in the park will be utilized. Adjacent to the main area of the park is a separate detention lawn to collect water in periods of heavy rainfall for use during drier months. This lawn can be aptly described by the Thai phrase, reference from our great King Bhumipol (RAMA 9), “monkey cheek” as the monkey stores away its food in its creek to “eat” later. Park as Water Treatment System There are three major components to Centennial Park’s water treatment system: the green roof, the rain water tank, the constructed wetlands, detention lawn and the retention pond. The rain and runoff water runs from the green roof at its highest point to the retention pond at the lowest.

The green roof is the catch basin for water. It is planted with native grasses and weeds for low maintenance: the plants can withstand Thailand’s extremely hot and wet seasons, and need minimal irrigation. The roots of these plants are strong and help to absorb water. Runoff water is stored in rain tanks beneath the green roof, and overflow drains to the constructed wetlands. In the dry season, water from the storage tanks is used to irrigate the roof when necessary. The constructed wetlands run downwards along the slope of park’s inclined plane. Water running through the wetlands comes from green roof rain tank overflow, and from runoff from the main park lawn. The wetland steps down in elevation through a series of weirs and ponds, where water passes through a weir, cascades down to flow through a pond below filled with water plans, passes through another weir, and flows through another pond. Water is cleaned every time it goes through plants until reaching the retention pond. The retention pond contains additional water plants for water treatment. The pond completes the system of water circulation

for the park: in the dry season, water will be pumped up from the retention pond, and some is taken in from the treat wasted water from its neighborhoods, to the top of the wetlands. This keeps the pond from becoming stagnant. Water from the retention pond is also used in the irrigation system for lower areas of the park. At each edge of the pond are special interactive design moments in the form of water treatment bikes, where visitors can ride stationary bikes to create movement and introduce more oxygen into the water. In addition ecological benefit, Centennial Park aims to inspire and educate the public.

I urban park

The park collects water from the surrounding neighborhood to integrate into the park’s filtration system for treatment. The treatedwastewater we create within the park will be collected, cleaned and used not just in the park, but also to help the neighborhood with water as well. There will be zero water discharge, the park that stores run-off water. Park as Outdoor Classroom Recognizing that successful landscape design maintains maximum open space and spatial flexibility, the physical design of Centennial Park is an open area with activated edges. The park contains eight landscape “rooms” along two sides, adjacent to the wetlands lining the main lawn. Each space is based on a different material and contains distinct program, like an herb garden, amphitheater, meditation walk, and reading area. Each area provides a different opportunity for students, communities and visitors to engage with the space. This edge condition forms a visual connection from the park to the neighborhood.

Park as Roadway Centennial Park stretches into its larger urban context conceptually, ecologically, and physically. A roadway perpendicular to the park, connecting two major streets in Bangkok, originally ran across the center of the site. With the design proposal, this road became a natural extension of the park. The design team convinced the university to make major adjustments to the road plan to prioritize pedestrians and environment: the road was diverted around the edge of the park with slower vehicular traffic, and reduced from four to two lanes in favor of widened pedestrian walkways and new bike lanes - both rare in Bangkok. The pedestrian paths connect directly to paths in Centennial Park for a seamless pedestrian experience. The Chulalongkorn Centenary Road’s 1.3 -kilometer stretch prepares for future community expansion with bicycle and shuttle bus stops along road. Linear rain gardens, with a multitude of native plants, line the road to absorb water and further extend the park into the neighborhood.

Passionate Landscape Designer As a landscape architect, design is my real passion as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the most important part of any project. Every project has its own spirit, and dedicated touch by picturing the project in my mind, firstly, in order to give every single part, of this project, its own identity and create different scenes and views associated to this part. I create nature by bringing it closer to people so they can interact with it, and most importantly be affected by it. There are never any kind of borders between people and nature in my designs. The hardscape usage is quite minimal while the softscape is always the major part of the design. While considering codes and human comfort, the priority is to achieve the function of every space perfectly. However, my ultimate objective is to create a connection between nature and people by smelling and hearing it. In our hectic lives, we are inclined to escape to nature every now and then. This shall be done using different plants with various textures, shapes, odors and colours while hearing nature sounds everywhere in water features, trees and birds. Certainly, the client requirements are the main focus within landscape design. Some clients like simple straight modern lines while others prefer an organic landscape with curvy lines. However, managing the client requirements is not always an easy task. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my job to choose and even mix between the classic landscape, and/or contemporary design skillfully.

Moon Valley Club This project is one of my favorite projects that I designed in my early career while working as a landscape designer at Target Landscape company. My vision was to create a green oasis in the middle of the compound. That was developed using natural plant distribution and with a simple touch of harmony between plants, water and hardscape areas. The Club House is the central recreation open space in Moon Valley compound, a gated residential resort consisting of a number of private villas, located in New Cairo. The main design constraint was the shape of the land itself, a curved triangular shape with a total area of almost 18,000-meter square. This required a concentrated effort to house all of the activities within this area to ensure that every villa had a view of the greenery and water features, and to ensure that all the noisy activities would be as far as possible from the villas edge.

The project is divided into four major activities located in the middle of the project. The first one is the pool area in front of the main entrance of the club terraces. The two sport courts introduce the second activity that are located between the kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s area, multi-use area and cafeteria. These areas are supposed to be the noisy part of the project. All these activities are supported by the main pathway that runs through the project areas as well as various green areas and water ponds, which are distributed along the pathway and accompanied by wooden bridges. The result is that the club house feels like it has a tropical garden with its lavish greenery and the trickle of water from the tiny fountain in the ponds. The desired affect is to achieve a perfect place for meditation where one can calm their soul and be close to nature.

This sense of harmony is maintained throughout the club house despite the presence of the surrounding villas thanks to the difference in land levels, which allows for privacy for all the villas without any sort of disturbance. Other factors to consider included the local climate. Egyptâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hot dry climate dominants most of the year, so native plants were chosen to make it easier to maintain and to survive in drought conditions, with a minimum water requirement. These native plants include, but not limited to, Cocas Palm, Jacaranda Ovalifolia Tree, Jatropha Integerrima, Thevetia Neriifolia, Dracaena, and Vitex. This is further to the ground covers like Lantana Camara, Pougainvilla Climber, and Pennisetum Purpureum Grass. Also, I used natural hardscape materials, like natural stones, basalt and wood. White river stones were used as a border to all lakes with wooden bridges crossing the lakes to give it a natural simple feeling. For other hardscape areas, I used local manufactured tiles and/or concrete floors to ease the maintenance and enhance the durability.

Marwa graduated from the faculty of Fine Arts Architecture section in 2002, she finished her pre-mastersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; year, in urban and landscape design in the Faculty of Engineering Cairo University. She has 16 years of experience in Landscape Architecture. Marwa has designed a wide range of projects with miscellaneous scales that incorporate private and public spaces, residential, commercial and recreation areas. Al-Abdali district is bridging the two mountains of AlLwaibdeh and Al-Hussain in Amman, the Capital city of Jordan. It is creating land uses to engage people in learning, motivation, participation, and recreation (Figure 1). This location has undergone enormous change throughout the 20th and the 21st century; transforming its land uses based on the core area of the specific site selected in this project. The business fluctuated from prosperous to dead and back to life many times before it died recently upon the relocation of the flea market (Figure 2). Now this project is promising the highly integrated area with new prosperous

times as guided by the prepared analysis, urban design, and transportation solutions. The analysis focuses on learning the significance of the place and the challenges it is facing. Land uses are analyzed in light of the local needs. The new transportation solution reduces the impact of the through traffic and supports the existence of pedestrians. At the end, this project is promising an enormous number of job opportunities, learning chances, and recreational grounds (Figure 1). In addition it is uplifting commerce and business in the area making it a new destination for many inhabitants of the city of Amman.

In such a city like Amman, places hold special memories related to its history, heritage, urbanization, morphology, traffic jams, streets, people and even its urban challenges. The stories and connotations have created strong bonds among its inhabitants. As it appears, the closer we are to the city center the more challenging are the obstacles to livability, renewal, walkability, and land use planning. Al-Abdali, near the city center, is an area (about 80,000 m2) with plenty of stories which does not mean a lot only to the residents of Amman but also to the inhabitants of all Jordan. Containing important political sites (Ministries, House of the Parliament, The Ministry of Justice, General Intelligence Department, a major bus terminal, etc), the place attracted many businesses and inhabitants. In addition, it gained its identity from the challenging topography laying between Jabal Al-Hussain

Mountain running along its Northern edge and Jabal Al-Lweibdeh Mountain running along its Southern edge (Figure 2). It has a very high potential for development since it is located in the heart of the city. The potential comes from its historical land use changes, the history of the area, the vacant lands, and its great integration since it is surrounded by two arterial streets (Umayah and King Hussain streets) (Figure 2). Al-Abdali is an important and vibrant place that people frequented for the past 50 years, due to its vital and dynamic land uses. More specifically, the chosen site in Al-Abdali was once the bus station which was moved outside the city in 2003. In the following decade, it was home to a flea market, however more recently the site is used as a parking lot with a handful of underperforming businesses surrounding it. Thus, considerable efforts are needed to bring it back to life again (Figures 3-4).

Research King Al-Hussein St. (Southern Street) and Umayah Bent Abdi Shams St. (Northern Street) are two arterials that link the site with the downtown and Addakhlyah Circle. Each is a one-way 25-meter wide street. Traffic has been studied using Visum Software to calculate the traffic volumes and highlight the origins and destinations for both routes (Figure 5). The results showed significant increase in the volumes of traffic between 2008 and 2018, which currently reach 7600/hour vehicles in peak hours on the northern street and 3500/hour on the southern street (Figure 6). In addition, trips that pass through them are mainly generated from Eastern and western Amman showing that it is now transformed to a pass through place (Figure 5).

In order to test the connectivity, integration, and access choices of such a site, Space Syntax Software was chosen (Figure 7). The first resulting axial map showed the two streets passing through the site in red which means high levels of integration as it is a centralized area. Nonetheless, the connectivity and choice maps showed the streets in blue because space has a weak choice value when there are none shortest paths that connect all spaces together in the network. And this explains the on-site high volumes of traffic since it is surrounded by two long arterials which accommodate this huge amount of traffic with few number of short-connected streets. This enticed the creation of bridges to connect Al-Hussain Mountain to the site and the use of pedestrian passageways. Layout Based on the transportation analysis and the intensive through traffic, the site is unsafe for pedestrians acting as a barrier between the opposite mountains of Al-Hussain and AlLwaibdeh at the time when it should be the link. As a solution to gain more land and solve the site challenges, a proposal for a new layout has been developed so that both streets are combined in a tunnel in which two lanes of the southern street remain as they are to serve AlLwaibdeh exits and entries. Also a new pedestrian 10-meter wide street was placed instead of the northern street, to serve only pedestrians and public buses so as to separate private and public transit. By this proposal, 28 meters are gained along the 1km long site. Integration increased, while connectivity decreased as based on e space syntax test results. Gained spaces are employed in pedestrian spaces creating diverse and live plaza and diverse land uses to serve the surrounding areas population (Figure 8). Based on the new Scenario, a new space syntax analysis was made to test the levels of integration, connectivity, and choice (Figure 7).

The Project Apparently, the nature of the earthâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;its topography and morphologyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;imposes the basics of the design. The layout rule is defined by following the lines of the ground morphology; natural water flow and accumulation; and existing pedestrian stairs (Figure 9). All parts of the proposal, including buildings, plazas, landscape, and earth movement have been obliged to the meter of a rhythm that regulated the design evolution (Figure 10).

Urban Link is a project driven by the needs of the site itself and the surroundings to restore the siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life and create a useful and enjoyable experience for the surroundings. The main route that links the three main zones of the project is a path that consists of bridges and ramps, accompanied by the sound of water flowing down so water works as a breathing line. Rainwater is gathered in underground reservoirs placed at the nodal areas of the project. As a result, water improves the entire areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s microclimate by placing pools, fountains, and small falls

to serve the semi-arid climate of Amman. Alongside the water flow, the course of functions are gradually introduced. As the landscape follow the main rhythm lines, the layouts of the buildings, and the unique geometry and topography of the place, it joins the separate parts, bridges the ends, and showcases the entire site. The soft-scape, the plazas, the water works, the roof passageways and the lawns swipes the place with its spectacular views (Figure 10).

Three layers are created to interpret the landscape, the masses, and the water courses (Figure 11). The project creates a new destination inside the city by generating an atmosphere that is attractive, comfortable and safe. It is a new spatial arrangement that solves the problems of different types of transit in the area, livability, land use, unemployment and pollution (Figure 12). It offers about 785 educational opportunities and about 670 job opportunities. A solution that expands green areas and regenerates the urban image by providing a public environment in large areas which serves more than 3000 users per day and promotes safer and healthier lifestyle. It is a proposal to give people back the Al-Abdali space that they once related to in a different and more appreciative way. In addition, it is providing more than 1000 parking spaces and handicapped accessibility. A small bus station is maintained onsite to bring people in from various parts of the city.

One of the main objectives of the project was to take advantage of the available natural resources; sun, air, water, and soil. Most buildings and the sport center are oriented towards the east west, while the open areas created from this design take advantage of the west and northwest winds, which are so beneficial during the summer months. Making use of the stepping topography of the place, we gather rainwater in subterranean reservoirs underground in the green areas, which shall be used for irrigation and waterworks (Figure 12). Thin layers of water in central open areas contribute to air cooling through evaporation, while also shielding part of the noise pollution.
