Landscape THE INDUSTRY TRADE SHOW

As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

YOU CAN GAIN UP TO 11 POINTS AT LANDSCAPE SHOW!

CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance. LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 18th of September 2018, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online nearer the time of the show at www.landscapeshow.co.uk. On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.”

Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend. Register for your FREE tickets to attend by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk

AIPH

MATTEINI TRANQUILLO In a world where private space is getting smaller and smaller, people are starting to look for ways to ensure their privacy isn’t under attack even in their own gardens. In order to prevent neighbours from “spying” into our private life, the landscaping industry decided to plant Pleached trees, but this also has its downfalls. For example, Pleached trees are plants that grow very fast, therefore controlling their growth could be quite expensive for their owner. So what’s the solution? Matteini Tranquillo Nursery have mastered an exclusive and interesting solution; Pleached trees of Camellias such as Citation and Sasanqua ‘Cleopatra’. The nursery staff has managed to grow a new line of Pleached trees of Camellias in a rare shape with a clear stem of 200cm with an espalier of 120 cm height and 120 cm width. The slow-growth of these specimens is easier to ‘control’ and as they’re evergreen, owners can enjoy the perfect privacy that their leaves guarantee the whole year round. In addition, Sasanqua Cleopatra blooms between Autumn and Winter whilst Citation between Winter and Spring so gardens can flourish all year long with the combination of the two! To find out more about the wonders of Matteini Tranquillo’s exclusive production of Camellias Pleached trees, come and visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park!

Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our world for the future and we are happy to be supporting the event for another year.

APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) accredits landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK against a strict inspection process on an annual basis. This ensures that we can promote our members to the public knowing they will offer a professional service to the best of our ability.

PERENNIAL Perennial, the only charity in the UK dedicated to helping all those who work in the horticultural and landscaping industries, wants more horticultural professionals to know that funding is available to help their dependent children should they need it.

The rigorous inspection process to join is one of the toughest within the industry. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. With garden designers, landscape architects and contractors all visiting The LANDSCAPE Show, the APL believe it is an important event in the landscaping calendar to support and take part in. Networking with industry peers is a great way to share information and promote the benefits of APL membership, so it would be foolish to miss out!

Perennial has recently launched a new Child Bursary scheme to help horticulturists who may not need Perennial’s help themselves, but whose child or children have an educational need that their income will not support. This type of grant can also help those struggling with the extra cost of feeding their children during the school holidays. From laptops and tablets, extra-curricular activities, sports training equipment to school trips, school meal support and meals during school holidays the Children’s Fund aims to provide support for a variety of areas. You can visit Perennial’s stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th & 19th at Battersea Park. Come along to learn more about their mission to support the horticultural and landscaping industry!

ARBORICULTURAL ASSOCIATION HOOK UP SOLUTIONS LIMITED Access to rear gardens of properties in London can often be very difficult, particularly with old Victorian style houses where there is usually no access to the rear of the property via the front. In early June, Hook Up Solutions had an SOS call from Jall Civil Engineering who were working at a property in Notting Hill, where over 40 tonne bags of topsoil were needed to be shifted to the rear garden. Luckily there was park behind which they could gain access via but they then needed to negotiate the 6ft tall railings. Being that the Hooka machine is only one meter wide and weighs just 1.8 tonne, it had no problem in tracking through the park, and with very low ground pressure nothing was disturbed. The next hurdle was to get the bags over the high railings. Normal reach is 3.4 metres, with the height of the bag and the high railings, some extra reach was needed and was achieved with the Hooka’s Fly-Jib attachment. The tonne bags, which were supplied by Bourne Amenity, were then able to be lifted over the railings; the bottoms were split so the soil could be released into the rear garden. With an excellent success, Hook Up Solution’s client was extremely pleased with their week’s hire. They said “Saved time, money and labour! Easily handles bulk bags, lifts them over the boundary wall and fence, easy to operate and manoeuvre. Soiling would have taken three days, as opposed to the nine to ten days it may have otherwise”. You can catch Hook Up Solutions and their innovative products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park, come along to see more!

APL The five gardens built on APL Avenue at BBC Gardeners’ World Live have once again impressed our judges, with this year’s results improving on last year. Lanwarne Landscapes have taken home the Best Construction award as well as Silver-Merit and two of our gardens, Living Gardens and Big Fish Landscapes taking home the Gold. With all of our gardens taking home at least a Silver-Merit, it once again shows proof of the high calibre that APL Accreditation offers. GOLD – Living Gardens, Lancashire. Best Construction Award and SILVER-MERIT – Lanwarne Landscapes. Designed by: Martin Lines, Lanwarne Landscapes SILVER-MERIT – Pro-Gardens LTD, Oxfordshire. The Tesco ‘Every Little Helps’ Garden designed by Owen Morgan, Mosaic Landscape Design and built by Big Fish Landscapes took Silver. The five front or back gardens that feature on the APL Avenue, gave the public the opportunity to witness first-hand what can be achieved in a small space. Landscapers are asked to produce a breakdown of costs to share with the public to give a greater understanding of the costs of a garden build. Visitors to the BBC Gardeners’ World Live at NEC Birmingham, 15-18 June, are also being asked to vote for their favourite garden on the APL Avenue. The People’s Choice voting will take place during the show days with the award being presented towards closure of the show on Sunday afternoon. CORE LANDSCAPE PRODUCTS A recent project in Buckinghamshire focused on utilising a client’s compact garden by transforming the space into an outdoor room for which a variety of products were supplied by Core Landscaping Products. Contractors started by clearing the original garden and installing the footings for the planter wall. They then installed the CORE Drainage Cell (wrapped in permeable geotextile) in between the footings to allow the water to escape back into the subsoil to ensure the planters had sufficient drainage and couldn’t become waterlogged. After which they built planter walls out of clinker blocks and rendered them with a plastering sand and cement render, leaving a smooth fine textured crisp finish. Following this, the patio was laid using 200 x 900mm flamed blue limestone slabs, quarried in Asia and supplied by Core Landscape Products Core Landcape Product’s Premium CORE Lawn Artificial Grass was then installed using the CORE Shockpad underneath to provide a soft feel underfoot. Contractors then began to construct the bench seat and Trellises using Canadian Red Cedar supplied by Core Landscape Products which was coated in Sansin ENS Wood Stain. Final stages included installing a CORE Privacy Screen on top of the planter wall. With excellent client feedback, Core Landscaping Products were pleased to hear that their CORE LP products were praised for not only the quality and value but also on the service provided by their team when it came to specification and design input. You can catch the Core Landscape Products team at their Stand in the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park. Come along to find out more!

MOORE CONCRETE Belfast designer, Linda McKeown, incorporated ECOncrete Bio Active Tiles into award winning design at Bloom Garden Festival 2018. The driving force behind Blueleaf Garden Design, on winning the overall medium sized garden award at this year’s Bloom Garden Festival in Dublin. Her ‘Enable Ireland Beyond Boundaries Garden’ caught the eye of the judges and the general public in equal measure. Her ability to combine aesthetic and structural themes within an overall garden design theme where the facets to the 2018 project, which most caught the judge’s eye. To make this happen Linda included a mix of Sliver Birch and pine trees, various grasses and a vertical wall. “The wall is a feature that reflects the urban environment within which many gardens are set”, she said. By common consent, the vertical wall formed a stunning backdrop to the overall garden. Significantly, it featured ECOncrete BioActive Wall Tiles, provided by Co Antrimbased precast manufacturer Moore Concrete. Richard Whiteside confirmed “These elements are designed to induce rapid plant wall coverage on urban buildings. Green plant coverage significantly improves urban landscapes, provides cleaner and healthier air and reduces the ecological footprint of urban development. Typical green roofs or green walls systems usually demand elaborate soil and watering systems. However this is not the case with our ECOncrete Bio Active concrete wall tile design which overall provides an effective, low maintenance, easy installed green wall solution.” You can catch Moore Concrete at their stand in LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park, come along to see more!

GREEN-TECH Leading landscape supplier Green-tech has announced that it is now selling the new Green-tree Rain Garden Filter Medium; a bespoke engineered soil for use in rain garden applications. Green-tech has seen a share increase in enquiries for rain gardens which are known to have a number of benefits. Rain gardens help deal more effectively with heavy rain by slowing down the flow of grey water. They are being used in flood management schemes where planting with vegetation also provides a bio-diverse environment for the benefit of local wildlife. A basic rain garden is a shallow depression with free draining soil and planted with vegetation that can withstand occasional temporary flooding. Green-tree supplied 380m³ of Rain Garden Medium for pioneering road improvement scheme. The scheme was planted with reed beds and other water-loving plants and is part of the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy. Mark Wood, Brand Development Director said, “As flooding in both urban and rural environments continues to increase, we have seen more urgent demand for environmentally-friendly responses and solutions. Our Green-tree Rain Garden Filter medium has been designed specifically to slow down the flow of grey water run-off. Rather than rainwater running straight into storm water drains and river, it is diverted into a rain garden with enables the water to permeate at a slower and more controlled rate into the natural water course which will help reduce the volume of destructive flooding we have seen in our towns over recent years.”

THE GARDENERS GUILD The Gardeners Guild is a national trade network for professionally qualified gardeners. With over 570 active, qualified members we have grown to become one of the largest paid member groups in professional horticulture since we started over 10 years ago. It will help them keep up-to-date with industry trends and new developments. It is also a great venue for us to meet our members and for our members to meet each other. Gardening is hard work; Battersea Park is a great venue for a well-earned day off from normal activities to attend the trade exhibition for our industry. Professionals will benefit from the ever increasing range of industry speakers and have a unique opportunity to network. It is not unusual for our members to be on first name terms with the CEO of large suppliers as a result of meeting them at Landscape. As well as speakers and exhibitors, visitors will benefit from networking with other professionals they meet. We look forward to seeing all the familiar faces of our industry colleagues at LANDSCAPE 2018! We will also be happy to talk to anyone who is considering garden maintenance as their career.

ECODEK Through their membership with the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), Ecodek have been proud to support the on-going WorldSkills heats leading up to the national competition in November. The WorldSkills UK Landscaping competition, run by the APL, is a great opportunity for trainee landscapers to showcase their skills across several technical areas alongside planning and material management competing to be the best in the UK. In a similar vein, Ecodek recently supplied Ecodek Heritage boards and substructure for the creation of the two garden vying for success in the BBC Gardeners World Young Landscapers Award, held at the BBC Gardeners World Live show at the NEC in mid-June. Supported by the APL, this was the first year the Young Landscapers competition has run, promoting excellence and to support up and coming landscapers, encouraging them to engage with high profile projects. Two teams of two worked with Bespoke Outdoor Spaces and The Plants and Paving Company (to bring their interpretation of designs by Diarmuid Gaven to life). Both gardens tested the full gamut of skills the young landscapers acquired through their training, from choosing the products and plants, execution in planting and hard landscaping and project management. The gardens were a beautiful addition to the APL Avenue at the show, with Ecodek material being showcased in both innovative and inspirational ways. You can visit Ecodek at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show this September at the Battersea Park. Come along to see more!

CED STONE GROUP The BBC’s ‘Countryfile’ had teamed up with the RHS to create an exciting commemorative garden, paying tribute to the show’s success. Designed by Ann-Marie Powell, the garden features a tiered landscape consisting of different sections, each representing an area of the British landscape, including the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire Dales, the woodlands of North Wales and the South of England. “There’s so many people to thank! We designers rely on the industry experts who help us achieve the quality we are looking for, which supports the finished effect,” said Ann-Marie. Giles Heap, Managing Director of stone and hard landscaping specialists CED Stone Group, worked with Ann-Marie by offering his expert advice to help specify the different boulders and rockery pieced for each section of the garden. “It was essential to ensure that boulders were either from the specific location or emulated the local geology in the most sympathetic way possible” said Giles. “Giles’s knowledge and eye for stone is quite phenomenal” said Ann-Marie. “He’s such a lovely chap, but it’s not just that he’s such a great personality to work with; he really knows his stuff! I didn’t realise how involved and how in with stone he is.” The CED Stone Group were thrilled to donate their stone materials to the garden, with Gabbro Boulders featured in the Scottish Highlands section, Grey Weathered Limestone in the Yorkshire Moors section, Slate in the Welsh Woodlands section, Cobbles and Pebbles in the Coastline section and Purbeck Limestone in the South of England. You can find the CED Stone Group displaying their coveted products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th a Battersea Park. Be sure to come and visit their stand to learn more.

UPM UPM’s recent project showcases the nature, design and gastronomy of a leading restaurant using their UPM ProFi Click System. For this project, the architect and professional installer choose the new UPM ProFi Click System and UPM ProFi Deck. Launched this year, the UPM ProFi Click System rethinks traditional deck installation. The aluminium and high performance polymer components that make up the sub-structure have been designed to last. Most of the pre-work of preparing the sub-structure can be done at work bench height, cutting time and saving back pains. No pre-drilling or screws are required. Once the frame has been build, the deck boards are simply clicked into place.

Its key roles include: provision of advice-based services such as business improvement schemes, briefings and helplines; training, conferences and events for members; market information and research; promotions such as the National Garden Gift Voucher and National Garden Gift Card schemes; and working closely with government and the media to influence policy and projects. The HTA offices are based at Horticulture House in Chilton, Oxfordshire where they are developing a horticultural hub with meeting room and conference facilities for the whole industry to utilise.

The installer was asked for his thoughts about the UPM ProFi Click System. He replied that “the system is well thought out and the components are durable. It is easy to install and uninstall and I would probably save approximately 65% of time needed to install a traditional deck. I also appreciated the technical support UPM ProFi provided me with.” UPM will be exhibiting more of their cutting-edge products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park. Be sure to come by and see how their innovative designs can help you in your next project!

ILP ROUND WOOD OF MAYFIELD At this year’s LANDSCAPE Show, Roundwood will officially launch their stunning mirrored building. Round Wood of Mayfield, who’ve been at LANDSCAPE for the past five years, will be displaying a full-scale ‘ÖÖD’ following their appointment as the exclusive UK distributor of the Estonian developed glass houses. They’re confident that ÖÖD Houses will appeal to garden and landscape designers looking for stand-out, high-end outbuildings. Their most striking feature is the insulated glazing that covers three elevations in full, ensuring a blended, yet – eye-catching, aesthetic in any environment. The rear elevation is also attractive and sympathetic. It features eco-friendly thermo treated ash cladding which cleverly conceals a service void, allowing for the easy setup of services. ÖÖD Houses are particularly well suited to the hotel and Airbnb sectors as they can offer bathroom and kitchen units along with a bed, air conditioning and extractor units. ÖÖD Houses are, however, multipurpose and can be adapted for many purposes. Previous builds across the world have been used a home offices, yoga and music studios. The first ÖÖD installation in the UK was recently completed at the picturesque Limes Cross Nursery in Herstmonceux, East Sussex. This will be used as both a show and trial building that potential customers can rent out to trial the ÖÖD experience. Interest following the launch night has been high, including from sites with a requirement for many units. You can see some of Roundwood’s exclusive products on display at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September 18th and 19th. Come along to find out more!

The Institution of Lighting Professionals is an open and collaborative organisation that works proactively with architects, interior designers and specifies to integrate quality lighting into the built environment. We promote best practice by uniting the skills of engineering, design and technology to deliver great spaces for people. Visit www.theilp.org.uk for more information. We are supporting The LANDSCAPE Show because we promote excellence in all forms of lighting one area including lighting landscapes. Our publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ gives guidance on implementing successful lighting within the public realm. It starts from one basic premise – that public space, is a crucial component of successful, well-functioning towns and cities in which people can work, relax and socialise in a harmonious manner. But at the same time, even the best-designed public squares, parks, pedestrian areas and gardens, which may be havens of sociability or serenity by day, can become unprepossessing, and even threatening, places after dark. One major aim of our guide is to inspire those responsible for commissioning and funding to recognise the numerous benefits of good landscape lighting and put such lighting at the centre of the design of new or refurbished urban spaces, parks and gardens.

URBAN STREET DESIGNS Recently, Urban Street Designs worked on a Public Funded Project for Mytholme Play Area in Waterfoot, Rossendale. A true community project with children from the local school arriving on site to install the plants, giving them a connection to the play area. Older residents had always referred to the space as “Mytholme so it was only right to keep some tradition in the much needed New Play Area. The Planters played a dual role in the project, one of which was to create a barrier from the car park and the other was to bring in well needed planting space to add colour from plants and shrubs and enough depth to accept small trees. Urban Street Designs worked very closely within the Waterfoot project, offering to produce a Laser Cut Corten and Stainless Steel Backed sign to tie the planters at the entrance of the Park to the sloped stone ramp that provides an exit at the opposite end. Urban Street Designs also used their latest CAD Tehnology and carried out all works in house. Their 6kw Bystronic laser cutter and Power Rollers created clean radius sections while their Press Brakes formed precision finished edges. They have a Powder Coating plant on site and their Fabricators are coded and weld to British standards. Their designers can therefore work from a detailed design or simple concept sketch. You can catch Urban Street Designs at their stall in the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park and find out more about their amazing products!

NIWAKI The Niwaki Tradestand at this year’s RHS Chelsea Show gave the show gardens a run for their money. The garden for the stand this year was designed by Niwaki founder Jake Hobson and planted by a mother and son team from Japan. Tsuyako Asado designed the planting scheme, based on her trademark natural Japanese style, and her son Takuya Asada, an up and coming gardener training at Chelsea Psychic Garden, did a fantastic job on the landscaping. Long slim granite slabs were set diagonally in gravel, inter-planted with camomile and thyme and planting beds were built up on traditional Japanese dry stone walling, planted with a wide range of Japanese natives which gave the garden a contemporary, natural feel. It wouldn’t have been a Niwaki garden without some spectacular Japanese trees and Jake’s home grown Cryptomeria Japonica Dai Sugi from his own garden in Dorset caused quite a stir. Pruned in the Kyoto style, their light and airy feel is reminiscent of the Kitayama Mountains, they provided height and drama without screening the stand and were a perfect backdrop to the Niwaki Tripod Ladders (which at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show come with a set of three rubber feet and a free pair of snips!) The Niwaki team are very excited to showcase their fantastic products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th & 19th at Battersea Park. Be sure to come along and see their mesmerising stand with the chance of spotting a vintage yellow Toyota Landcruiser too!

LECA Leca Lightweight Expanded Clary Aggregate gives self-compacting, light, free-draining base layer to new a football centre. Leca UK, the European manufacturer of mineral-based bulding materials, supplied Leca Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate for this unique and eye-catching project. Contractors built ten five-aside football pitches on top of a multi-storey car park visible from the M6 Motorway in Birmingham. The ten pitches are part of a multi-million pound sports centre for Goals Soccer. Leca Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate was employed as the base layer for the pitches, principally for the fact that its light weight reduced loading on the exisiting structure, but also for its excellent draining properties. In addition, the unique ability of Leca Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate to self-compact ensure that a stable base could be levelled out using no more than hand-held rakes, overcoming the need for heavy plant to flatten it. Leca will be exhibiting their amazing products at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park. Come along to see more!

MARIAN BOSWALL MARIAN BOSWALL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

Marian Boswall Landscape Architects recently worked on an 18th century grade II listed Sussex farmhouse in an area of outstanding natural beauty. As it is also in a conservation area, they worked carefully with planning officers to gain consent for a new wall and new entrance from the highway, as well as for an extensive landscape master plan that created new garden settings for listed barns and regarded the existing lawns to make the most of the countryside views. The new entrance sequence improved privacy whilst creating a large parking area

which is screened from the house. Spatial hierarchy defines the entrance to the farmhouse through a simple gravel garden with soft structural planting. To the rear of the house, a large Yorkstone terrace provides dining and entertaining space with views opening up to the stunning Downs. The barn garden is a private space, enclosed by clipped hedges, with a solid oak pergola for summer dining. A contemporary lighting scheme creates softs shadows that dance across the Breedon gravel as the planting spills out from oak frames beds.

In the ornamental garden, the double herbaceous borders lead deep into the garden toward the orchard and meadow, with a beautiful shepherd’s hut. Marian Boswall Landscape Architect’s work included an extensive programme of tree pruning, crown lifting and removal of trees for health reasons as well as to open up and create views and vistas. They planted over 60 trees included a copse for wind protection and new habitat creation.

Marian Boswall will be taking part in discussion alongside other members of BALI and SGD at LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park. Come along to learn more about landscape and garden design!

EUROPLANTERS Recently, Europlanters were asked to design and manufacture planters and seating for a garden in the suburbs of Manchester. The brief was that their client wanted a space to dine in the garden with a separate space to relax around a fire pit watching the sun go down. After an initial site visit was carried out the Europlanters design team got to work to create their client’s brief. “This was a great opportunity to use three of our new products” said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters, continuing “as each new design when combined with our standard sizes matched the brief perfectly.” The dining area consisted of five Large Planters with sloping back benches features Europlanters new BENCH9 bolted together with two 800mm cube planters around a customer-made granite effect GRP table with stainless steel legs. To ensure that there was shade over the seating area, pergolas made from GRP, also a new product by Europlanters, were bolted to the planters and a tailor-made sail was then attached over the top. Around the first pit, five curved planters and five curved timber seats also Europlanters newest BENCH8, were fitted together with hidden-storage benches at each end. All the planters, benches and pergolas were finished in a gunmetal colour. Europlanters are proud to say that their client was extremely happy with the finished project and has already spent many nights enjoying the summer evenings in his garden. You can catch Europlanters at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park. Come along and see their fantastic products for yourself.

LONDON COLLEGE OF GARDEN DESIGN The London College of Garden Design graduates will be represented at all the major garden shows this year creating gardens at shows in Singapore as well as across UK shows such as Chelsea and Southport, the UK’s longest running event. But it’s not just their graduates who have benefitted from LCGD training putting them on the map and promoting their businesses, through Show Gardens. Majority of Garden designers and even some Landscapers at Chelsea this year have attended training days run by LCGD that concentrate on giving the best advice and case studies on how to approach a Show Garden project. LCGD concentrate on four core areas; kick starting your sponsorship and support, creating a compelling narrative, creating a great planting design and constructing the garden. Their aim is the give their members an independent view of what show might eb best for their business and their sponsor. Their next course will be this autumn at Ascot Racecourse, hosts of the new Ascot Spring Garden Show and is free to all delegates. As well as learning some top tips, they’re aiming for their attendees to meet representatives from all the major garden shows including Ascot, Gardeners World Live, RHS and Southport. The LCGD will be speaking on this very topic at the LANDSCAPE Show on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th September at Battersea Park. Come along to find out more!

LOKNAN The past couple of months have been exciting for Loknan, working with two fantastic designers at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. On Tom Massey’s ‘Lemon Tree Trust’ garden on Main Avenue, they collaborated with him on the timber elements to his garden. The brief was to use a timber species that was rustic and of a more economical price bracket, to fit with the theme of the garden (Domiz Refugee camp in Iraq), whilst still looking to ‘high-end’ for this garden. The screens shown on this image were bespoke made in Loknan’s workshop. Loknan also supplied the baton cladding, decking, hand rail and bench tops for the pavilion and benches on the garden. The other garden was in the ‘Spaces to Grow’ category and was designed by Naomi FerretCohen for the HIV charity Cherub. Loknan supplied Naomi with their Thermo Bamboo cladding boards for the front of her bench and also the cladding in the hedges at the rear of the garden. Naomi wanted a specific colour of grey to match with the stone paving, the gravel paths and also the bricks and bench top. Loknan carefully decided on the colour, matching it with the other product’s and send the boards through a special painting process at their mills. The overall effect looked fantastic and had some amazing feedback. Loknan will be displaying their fabulous products at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show in September at Battersea Park, be sure to pop down and have a look!

DEBBIE CARROLL STEP CHANGE DESIGN

Care culture is on a spectrum and design support needs to match this. What does this mean in practice? Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell from Step Change Design are looking into this very topic. Their approach, based on their research findings, is that as each care setting has its own unique care ‘culture’ (the ways that it does things, its values, beliefs and practices), designers need to think more broadly than pure design support in order to create a wellloved and well-used outside space for care setting residents. So understanding the care culture in operation in a care setting will help to identify not just how much

(or how little) they are using their current outside space, but the reasons why this is the case. Step Change Design therefore feels this is important for designers to uncover, particularly in homes that are fearful around Health & Safety and have become increasingly indoors-focused as a result. And there are a great number of care homes that can be described in this way. A designer’s key task with these homes is to encourage them to address their negative attitudes towards their garden before we think about applying out traditional design skills. This is to

ensure that any future redesign work is supported by positive and enabling attitudes to engage actively with their outside space. So they advocate that you’ll think much more widely about the fullest range of skills you can bring to your work with care settings whether it is as a champion for the outside space (providing the counterbalance to negative attitudes), coaching and facilitating staff to go outside with their residents more often, or as a critical friend you can challenge myths and assumptions that are simply not true about the outside space.

Debbie Carroll from Step Change Design will be presenting at the LANDSCAPE show running in September at Battersea Park. Come along to hear more!

EUROTREE Eurotree's newest pot-grown Hedge elements are now available to a variety of types. From Lusitanica to Angustifolia, Prunus Lau. Etna, Prunus Lau. Genolia and Taxus Baccata. The plants are completely pot-grown and are therefore light weight and easy to handle. The instant hedges are narrow and compact, so they fit easily in any garden. The instant hedges can be used for various purposes, for example a partition, decoration or simply for replacement of existing hedges. Eurotree recommend instant hedges as there are many advantages and benefits over other options. One being that they are quick and easy to place, lasting all year round with little to no maintenance. Eurotree therefore suggest that instant hedges are ideal for people with less ‘green fingers’. Additionally, Landscapers love instant hedges. The different species and sizes are easy to combine with each other and in addition that they separate the yard, protect crops, break the wind and mute sounds, also providing structure in a garden Eurotree will be displaying their wonderful products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park. ADRIAN GRAY Adrian Gray is the pioneer of stone-balancing art and has been creating seemingly impossible balanced sculptures for more than 15 years. Gray’s monumental sculptures have become synonymous with the goal of attaining a delicate balance within human progress needed to sustain life on earth. Some of Adrian Gray’s most recent notable work includes the expansion of the River Cottage HQ near Lyme Regis. CEO Stewart Dodd felt an organic, natural sculptural installation should feature in the central courtyard of what will be a new rustic barn accommodation complex. Hugh FernleyWhittingstall is a fan of Gray’s Stonebalancing art and wanted a statement piece that would be symbolic of the ethical and environmental ethos of the River Cottage Company. For the River Cottage installation Gray intends to create an improbable looking monolithic balancing sculpture. He sees these large, puzzling and unnerving pieces, ‘Bolder Balances’ as symbolic of the precarious position of the Earth, our impact upon it, and our need to find a more balanced and sustainable approach to our place in Nature. Describing his work, Gray says, “These sculptures are not only a symbol of the balancing act we as humans need to perform as we move forward, but also object of beauty and wonder. Their presence in a landscape, garden or urban environment is a statement and a reminder of an intention to do our utmost to live sustainable and in harmony with the natural world.” Adrian Gray will be showcasing his fantastic skills at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park, be sure to come along and learn more!

SGD Members of the Society of Garden Designers were back in full force at RHS Chelsea this year, with 16 members staging garden exhibits at the event. Amongst them, a number of trends emerged giving a glimpse of the planting, features and design styles we can expect to see in the months ahead. Amongst various intricate designs, Metalwork was a popular feature incorporated in many esteemed garden designs. To mention few, distinguished designer such as Stuart Towner, Tony Woods MSGC, Jo Thompson MSGD, Matt Keightley MSGD as well as Naomi Ferret-Cohen all used metal and sculptural structures within their design to create bold and memorable impacts. RHS Chelsea was filled with an array of water features and installations. Patrick Collin’s garden showcased a large-scaled water installation where a ‘lake’ was created from a series of prefabricated, interconnecting tanks whilst Tom Massey featured a star-shaped fountain with radiating water rills inspired by traditional Islamic designs. In other exhibits, Lupins took centre stage including Catherine MacDonald’s Seedlip Garden, The Urban Flow Garden by Tony Wood MSGC and Nic Howard’s Garden for Savills and David Harper. A trend for incorporating edibles into floral displays was also evident in gardens by Tom Massey and Tony Woods MSGD. Inspirations for designers came from all over the world. With many adding international touches to their gardens as a tribute to the culture and history. The Artisan garden by Sarah Eberle FSGD was inspired by the Moghul Gardens of North India, whilst Tom Massey’s Garden was filled with Middle Eastern references. Sarah Morgan from the SGD will be speaking in a session as part of our CPD Accredited Seminar Programme this September at the LANDSCAPE show. Come along and learn more!

CREATIVE DIRECTOR - INDOOR GARDEN DESIGN

Indoor Garden Design was invited to design an interior planting scheme for Sky Central, the Indoor Garden Design was invited to design an interior planting scheme for Sky Central, the 45,000m2 flagship building on its 13 hectare headquarters campus located in West London. With the prevalence of biophilia gaining awareness and recognition, the interior planting scheme was created to provide an all-important sense of connection with the natural world, with ‘home zones’ designed for each floor to help shape quiet areas for individual working, but without

Creative use of mixed planting was utilised to define ‘neighbourhoods’ and act as waypoints. The more relaxed style of planting is far removed from traditional corporate look, with emphasis on texture and colour within each display.

In order to maintain optimal plant health alongside pristine appearance, maintenance requires the equivalent of two permanent full time staff every week. Technicians work overnight and at weekends in order to meet the high standard for what has now become an award-winning scheme.

While the majority of plants were grown in Holland the planting also incorporates native species from six continents. Some 65 different varieties of plants are maintained on site, including a double stemmed Ficus Panda which is over 35 years old.

Indoor Garden Design was established in 1975 and is a multiaward winning company at the forefront of contemporary interior and exterior horticultural design transforming workspaces, offices, hotels and restaurants, and bringing events to life.

LUMENA LIGHTS This Summer Lumena are re-promoting their range of high-end 12v underwater lights, with an upgraded version of the Marine Grade (316) Stainless Steel ‘Nautilus’ light. The new design is part of the Versa 12v ‘Plug & Play’ range, and is now even easier to connect via the 2 pin connector with no wiring involved. The light can plug directly into a transformer if required or into a three or six way ‘splitter if multiple lights are being used. Another improvement is the longer fiver meter cable, making installation and positioning more versatile. Over time, Lumena will be upgrading all 12v products to ‘Plug & Play’. The Nautilus designs as well as the recent ‘Agronaut’ design are all naturally durable, build to last and attractive. The Agronaut is part of Lumena’s expanding range of elegant Solid Brass products with a rustic Bronze finish that co-ordinates beautifully with the many colours and textures of the garden. It has an integrated glare shield which protects the lens and focuses the light. Garden Ponds and water fountains are decorative features by design, but with added illumination, an eye-catching dimension if brought to life when darkness falls. Lights can be placed within the water to provide beautiful ‘mirror’ and shimmering effects. By using a coloured dichroic lens, extra special effects can be created, especially using the Blue lens. Use a Daylight White LED bulb for extra ‘cooling’ effects. You can find out more about Lumena Lights and see their products on display on their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park!

TREE AID TREE AID helps people in the drylands of Africa to lift themselves out of poverty and protect their environment. Trees bring green benefits wherever they are planted, just by doing what trees do, storing carbon and nitrogen in the soil and releasing oxygen. But in the dryalnds of Africa, trees have an ever greater impact on protecting the fragile environment and the people who live there, from the impacts of climate change. In the last year, trees gave people more security, more opportunities and more hope. TREE AID projects across the region helped people to use trees to improve quality of their farmland and grow more crops, to retain precious water and to stop soil being eroded by the wind and the rain. In many cases, whole communities worked together to bring benefits that everyone could share, now and for the future. Korotimi lives in Samine in Mali, one of the world’s poorest countries. She is part of a TREE AID project developing a tree nursery in her village. “I got involved because I had seen so many trees disappear from the forest wince I was a child” she says. The nursery focuses on native and threatened tree species that can restore the forest, stop soil erosion and provide nutritious food. It’s hard work, but Korotimi is determined to re-green her village to make the environment better for her children in the future. You can catch TREE AID at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show on 18th and 19th of September at Battersea Park. Come along to learn more!

DANIEL LOBB

BESTIQUE GARDEN & LANDSCAPE DESIGN

As a practice, Daniel Lobb is privileged to work with many clients, residential, public, commercial and charitable organisations; many schemes are woven into sites with multiple layers of history. When approaching these sites an understanding of the constraints and opportunities, alongside genius loci, spirit and atmosphere is essential. The clients are the present custodians; working together garden designers can weave another layer onto the site to meet the current use, taking into accounts any restrictions.

Simply because a building and site are historic does not mean a 21st century design should not be overlaid. The example below shows the Tudor Sutton House in Hackney, with adjacent land recently developed from a former car beakers yard. The site was redesigned to become a garden play space. Part of this redesign included the installation of new gates, replacing the former solid painted timber gates. The view from the gates is the only view into the site from the street. The 20th century use of the

site as a breakers yard informed the design of the new rusty steel gates, playfully incorporating hundreds of scrap Matchbox cars in louvred boxes; these draw passers-by to experience a channelled view into the garden. Garden designers are always conscious of the responsibility we have to ensure that a historic site is developed sympathetically, the zeitgeist of their time will be revealed in their work as a contemporary layer in the ever evolving environment.

You can catch Daniel Lobb discussing 21st Century Design at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park. Be sure to come along to learn more!

ASHWELLS TIMBER This striking reclaimed Opepe hardwood timber was requested by Eastleigh Local Authority to make a series of benches at Grantham Green, Eastleigh, Hampshire. The timber is extremely durable and is commonly used in the construction of railway bridges and structural marine applications. Due to Opepe containing very few knots it also makes ideal cladding and decking. Aware winning landscape architect, Mark Ellison, contacted Ashwells Timber requesting large sections of reclaimed hardwood timber to be used in his latest project. Ashwells have worked with Mark in the past and he is a keen supporter of using reclaimed timber whenever possible. When the project contractors were asked if they encountered any issues when using reclaimed timber, owner Andy Frost replied, “No, not at all. In fact it was a pleasure to work with the timber and even better that it has the history behind it. Eastleigh has a connection with the railways so it seemed perfect to use timber reclaimed from the railways.” The project involved working with the local community to landscape what was once a football pitch. This included the local school children submitting possible designs for the picnic tables and benches. One of the benches shown was based on a design of a crocodile, which a local primary school student designed. Dave Francis from Eastleigh Council stated “By including the local community in the design, ensured there was a sense of pride and ownership for the regeneration scheme.” Ashwells Timber will be exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park. Be sure to come along and learn more about their amazing product offering!

LINCOLNSHIRE POND PLANTS Lincolnshire Pond Plants continued development of the nursery on the old RAF Binbrook site ‘Brookenby’. The Nissan huts have been stripped of all the metal and the plastic sheet has been placed over the top turning them into perfect polytunnels. As the sun finally begins to shine, their next task will be to create pools to house the 40 different types of water lilies that they hold in stock. Ranging from Dwarf for the ornamental bowls there’ll also be small water features, through to the large that have a two to three meter spread. Water lilies at this time of year offer immense colour to a pond, but also provide vital shade to prevent the build-up of blanket weed. Their range of lily flowers varies from almost black to the purest white and many variations between. Lincolnshire Pond Plants will finally move from their packing place at Market Rasen to the new nursery this weekend and as the excitement builds so does the amount of jobs. Rendering of the Nissan huts starts on the 2nd of July, pruning and potting, with some decorating of the new offices in between. Steam pipes are being laid and finally the watering system is sorted. Lincolnshire Pond Plants take genuine pride in growing plants that love to be in the water, at the end of the water or just like to be in the area on damp ground. Their range of moist, damp ground plants can help solve that awkward corner where very little grows. Lincolnshire Pond Plants will be displaying their products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park. Come along to see more!

GRANDDAD ROB DESIGNS Granddad Rob Designs has been trading for seven years but their experience in the animal housing industry goes back nearly 40 years when founder Rob Pellet formed his previous company Forsham Cottage Arks in 1979. They have now developed a wide range of very high quality animal housing and their dovecotes in particular have become renowned for their superb presence in the LANDSCAPE Show. Although there will be an example of one of their dovecotes on the stand, their main focus at the LANDSCAPE Show will be waterfowl with an example of the very pretty Epsom floating duck house which boats some very prestigious owners! On a particular note, they will be introducing a new concept in creating a very natural looking artificial floating island. At the heart of each island is a robust plastic matrix which has ample flotation embedded. On top of this is a planted mat of natural aquatic vegetation, which actually grows through this matrix directly tapping into the water below, quickly establishing to give a very natural effect. Not only do the islands look great but also each one comes with a host of benefits to your lake and the wildlife around it. Designed primarily as a refuge for nesting waterflow the added benefits far outweigh this requirement. These include a drastic improvement in water quality, which can help with green algae problems. The mass of roots below the island provides a refuge to aquatic invertebrates. In addition, the plants above the water provide a ‘wild space’ which supports a host of insect and amphibian life and benefit pollinators. Come along to the LANDSCAPE Show on September 18th & 19th and Battersea Park and see Granddad Rob Designs display to find out more about these interesting islands!

BO COOK

BO COOK LANDSCAPE & GARDEN DESIGN

Bo will be celebrating her first year at the helm of Bo Cook Landscape & Garden Design this September. It’s been a busy year with a diverse number of projects on the table, now at various stages throughout the design and build process. Projects range from small to large, city to country, traditional to modern. Bo’s most recent design transforms a paddock into a contemporary rural retreat for a clients’ second home. Anchoring the design is a large circular lawn intended for play and parties,

wrapped around by large sweeping borders filled with naturalistic and native plants. Hard landscaping is kept to a minimum with timber boardwalks and seating areas designed to maintain a soft aesthetic. The contemporary pond creates reflection and dynamism and will encourage more wildlife onto the property. Sitting the garden studio on the edge of the water allows the water to become integral to the experience where the clients can escape, re-focus and relax in

this beautiful calm retreat in their peaceful rural locale. Bo’s current projects include designing gardens for a new residential home for adults with profound learning disabilities and a steeply sloping streamside garden on Ashdown Forest. Current designs being built include a contemporary family garden in Hove and a large rural property with a kitchen garden in East Sussex.

Bo Cook of Bo Cook Landscape & Garden Design will be speaking as part of a panel at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park. Be sure to come and learn more!

VECTORWORKS For the global Landscape Architecture, Urbanism and Environment firm McGregor Coxall, a design has to be more than just a quick solution to a client’s existing problem. Realising that approximately 70 percent of the world’s population will live in cities by the year 2050, Managing Director Adrian McGregor is clear that the built environment should respond to the needs of today, as well as prepare to combat issue that the population will face in the coming decades. One example of how McGregor Coxall furthers its endeavour to build a more sustainable world is the firm’s work on the Parramatta River Urban Design Strategy. Today the Parramatta City Centre is Sydney’s second largest Central Business District (CBD) and the only one located on a riverfront, which presents a distinctive mix of opportunities and challenges for its development. McGregor Coxall’s Urban Design Strategy for the 31-hectacre space was meant to reorient the district toward the river, rebranding the location as ‘Where the Waters Meet’ and aimed to revitalise the CBD through an innovative urban realm and four dynamic, mixed-used precincts along the water’s edge. The design created an active waterfront where the city can celebrate its public life. McGregor Coxall’s work in the Parramatta River Urban Design Strategy earned the firm several distinctions. To achieve such international acclaim and local distinction, McGregor Coxall relies on the 3D modelling and site design tools within Vectorworks Landmark software. “The software we use has to be intelligent in terms of our carbon footprint modelling,” said McGregor. “With intelligent BIM, smart symbols and coordinated worksheets, Landmark gives us the ability to make this happen.” Vectorworks with be displaying their ground breaking products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th in Battersea Park. GRAHAM FESTENSTEIN INSTITUTE OF LIGHTING PROFESSIONALS

If you are working on projects that involve lighting there is a strong possibility that you will be working in one capacity or another, with a member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP). Traditionally an engineering institution predominantly involved with street lighting the ILP has expanded its membership in recent years to include architectural lighting designers working in the public realm and urban design, landscape and projects where there are environmental considerations such as dark skies. In fact their membership now boasts some of the top practices working in this field.

Graham Festenstein is an independent lighting designer with many years’ experience working on exterior projects in the public realm and also the Vice President Architectural for ILP responsible for developing this part of the institutions work and creating closer collaborations with other allied disciplines such as Landscape Architects and Urban Designers. The ILP’s role also includes raining the profile of best practice in lighting design and providing information, training and guidance for anyone involved with lighting.

One such project the IPL are concerned with at the moment is a publication aimed at bridging the gap between designers, engineers and contractors for external lighting projects, giving guidance for lighting designers, non-lighting professionals and electrical engineers on the design principles, technical standards and special considerations working in the public realm brings. Hopefully this document will be the first of many addressing the need of all working on light projects enabling design that fulfils the aspirations of designers without compromise.

Graham Festenstein will be part of the CPD Accredited Seminar Programmme at the LANDSCAPE Show where he’ll be discussing in further ‘Lighting the Urban Realm’, come along to learn more!

THE GARDEN TRELLIS COMPANY The Garden Trellis Company’s bespoke services offers the ideal combination of expert planning and design, specialist joinery craftsmanship and state of the art painting facilities for the most desirable custom-made joinery. With a recent project for a home in North London, The Garden Trellis Company used bespoke designed trellis to transform a contemporary London garden in to an area with a distinctive traditional French style. Following a site visit and before the joinery was created and installed, the biggest challenge was to get the drawing accurate for the CNC machine. The Garden Trellis Company had done many circular details before, but the individual circles in this scheme take long to connect and pin into the frames. This very ornate and eye-catching scheme included diagonal and horizontal bespoke trellis with 20mm mini slats, decorate panels made from Tricoya, four-sided box columns are always impressive as they deliver grandeur while maintaining the airy, open feel of trellis. The Garden Trellis Company will be showcasing a diverse selection of both natural and painted trellis samples at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th & 19th at Battersea Park. DECORI Creating bespoke metal panels with precision and thought is the foundation that has helped build Decori. As a wellestablished British manufacture they have all the facilities to create bespoke panels, any size, shape, colour and design. They go the extra mile to make sure they produce something special to satisfy both designers and clients. Garden Designer Lee Hopkins has been busy designing a contemporary secret garden in Bristol, transforming the garden into a peaceful and tranquil place for his client to enjoy. The garden will also include a special memorial feature dedicated to remembrance of the client’s late wife. Lee asked for Decori’s help to create the main focal point within the garden. The design of the panel collated several ideas personal to his client and would be routed into a hardwood fence. This is where Decori developed the design provided by Lee Hopkins and manufactured a beautiful stainless steel panel that was powder coated to an exact RAL colour specified by the client. With the client’s ideas in mind, Decori relished in the opportunity to deliver a personnel bespoke service that allows their client to add their expression into Decori’s metalwork. Catch them at their stand this September at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park to see their exquisite products for yourself!

Steve Wells of Wells Design Landscape and Gardens has been use of PRO Landscape Design Software for almost 20 years now and recently had the opportunity to complete a project for one of his most valued clients. The project was an update of a 15-year old, one acre property to include the outdoor entertainment spaces in addition to the landscape and garden areas overtime in stages. “As it always does, PRO Landscape contained all the tools I needed to complete the design for this project” said Wells. “Without PRO Landscape, this design would have been much more difficult and taken much longer to complete.” PRO Landscape is full of outdoor living items such as arbors, pergolas, outdoor kitchen items, outdoor furniture, fire pits and much more to choose from for designs. “When designing the outdoor living area, PRO Landscape provided me with all the symbols necessary to create just the right look.” Wells stated. The second phase was to create a completely new planting schedule for both the front and back gardens. The design required an ornamental garden with structure and depth with a variety of trees, shrubs and groundcovers. For over twenty years, PRO Landscape has proudly produced the most complete design software product available which includes easy-to-use-CAD, photo imaging, night and holiday lighting, 3D rendering, estimating, and a free companion tablet app. You can find PRO Landscape at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show on September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park. But what can you do? Turn down much-needed work? Do a barely passable job and neglect your lesser projects? Ideally we’d 13 take on every project and handle them all with ease. That’s what garden designer Philip Colier did when he landed his HD/CM big project. The large project client had bought a KITCHEN plot and were building a Huf Haus. It meant liaising with architects from Huf, planning officers, contractors and his clients.

Philip is an accomplished designer but prefers to hand draw. In this case UTILITY he needed the accuracy of CAD drawings and the ability to make edits and email the files without having to redraw and scan each version. So Designs Illustrated worked with him to produce the professional plans he needed.

It took some time as indeed several 8 demands revisions were required to meet the for everyone involved with the project. The 23effort was worth it however, as the house and garden merged wonderfully. Philip’s clients couldn’t be happier and he now has a great project for his portfolio thanks to the assistance he received from Designs Illustrated. 12

PLATIPUS ANCHORS MRP Developments requested from Urbanissta a design and planting solution with ‘wow factor’ that offered architectural planting that would be low maintenance for large in built planters on the first offered architectural planting that would be low maintenance for large in built planters on the first and fourth floor terraces of a high-end refurbishment of the commercial building in this prestigious Soho location, along with a green rood on the fifth floor. The planting design solution offered height and structure with year-round evergreen interest and visual impact from architectural trees, clipped topiary and statement grasses. The planting installation required six Eleagnus trees and seven large Taxus Spirals to be installed on the first and fourth floor in-built planters as both were in potential wind pockets it was crucial to ensure there would be no plant movement. Urbanissta discussed anchoring options with the team at Platipuis and agreed that the D-MAN cell based system was the ideal solution given the relatively shallow soil depth in the planters. GPF Lewis installed all the trees and large topiary using the interlocking D-MAN cells and wire tendon anchors. Platipus will be showcasing their products at the LANDSCAPE Show this September 18th and 19th at Battersea Park. Be sure to come along and see their stand!
