Finalists Announced in the SGD Product of the Year 2014 This year, the Society of Garden Designers has been searching for a product to crown The SGD Product of the Year 2014. With a vast range of new products offered onto the market place every year, the Society want to find and celebrate the very best products available to garden-makers. As SGD Chair Juliet Sargeant MSGD said “We know that great gardens are achieved when professional garden designers use the finest products to implement their visions, be it a spectacular new plant or tree specimen, a hand-crafted greenhouse or an innovative new lighting product. We launched The SGD Product of the Year to find and celebrate the very best of them.” Over 300 votes were cast by SGD Members to establish a shortlist from the products entered. Congratulations to the following ten manufacturers whose products have been named as finalists:

Brickworks Vande Moortel With our SeptimA format, the depth of clay pavers is reduced to 70mm. Whilst remaining capable of carrying all but the heaviest traffic loads, the decrease in size reduces the energy, time and materials used in the manufacturing process. This, together with savings in transport costs due to the lower weight, provides both ecological and economical benefits. The latest additions to the SeptimA range - Jatoba and Sienna, with the tumbled variants of Amber and Wengé are four vibrant and variegated shades, created by combining atmospheric variations during firing process with specially developed surface fusions.

Gaze Burvill The Jubilee Spiral is a simply special, inviting, environmentally sound, oak seat. It can be placed around a small tree or sculpture, or it will stand beautifully on its own, being sculptural in its own right - it’s great for parties! It has been designed for diverse traditional or contemporary landscapes: a meditative spot, elegant family garden, or busy community space, it is functional, durable and visually distinctive. Made in Hampshire, and a celebration of the craftsman’s skill, particularly in the steam-bending of oak, the Jubilee Spiral is wonderfully comfortable - definitely designed to be used, not just looked at.

CED Natural Stone SuperCEDEC is a natural, organic footpath gravel that has no chemical additives. It has been specially developed to be the ideal solution for urban tree pits and pedestrian areas where a firm natural surface is required. Available in three colours the permeable nature of this product combined with its stable structure makes it more resistant to scuffing than other similar products. SUDS compliant SuperCEDEC does not suffer badly with pollution and detritus blocking its pores. It does not set permanently and when wet reverts to a more pliable state remaking itself when dry allowing tree roots to grow unrestricted.

Groundscare Products ZIPLEVEL Pro 2000 survey instrument ZIPLEVEL is a unique, innovative product. It does not rely on line of sight so, unlike laser and dumpy levels, can work: • around corners • behind trees, garden sheds or any other obstacle • from inside to outside (of a building) or room to room • in deep excavations • over unlimited heights and distances .........without you doing any calculations • it needs only one person to operate it • is compact and light weight • easy to use • requires virtually no set-up • stores up to 137 plots for later recall • can calculate infill volumes

Joanna Wallis Designed and made in the UK, with a dual day and night function – by day a striking garden feature, by night they illuminate. Suitable for hard or soft landscaping. Indistinguishable from stone but easy to handle, the Globe Lights are available in several carefully blended colour finishes that match natural stone products, and can also be customised. Made from polyethylene they are extremely tough, UV and frost resistant, and maintenance free. Powered using 12v LED or mains voltage and priced at £168, Stone Globe Lights have huge design potential, providing ornamentation, ambient and task lighting all rolled into one.

Q Lawns Meadowmat for Birds and Bees is a wildflower matting containing a unique mixture of some of the UK’s most attractive wild flowers and grasses. Species have been selected for their attraction to bees and/or their bird-friendly seed heads. Meadowmat is supplied as pre-grown rolls of plants and is installed in a similar way to lawn turf. It gives instant ground cover. Management is simple; plants are allowed to grow naturally through the year and are trimmed in early spring. Meadowmat for Birds and Bees contains perennial and biennial plants. It re-grows every year offering superb value for money.

Urbis Design Our Poppy Bowl entered the scene at Chelsea Flower show on Olivia Kirk’s gold winning garden. It has since flourished as both a feature planter and a stunning water bowl. The satisfyingly curved shape is abstracted from the natural form of a poppy seed head by our MD, sculptor Richard Mackness. Produced in Advanced lightweight Concrete and available in a range of highly durable finishes from modernist grey to natural stone or even rusted steel, as shown. The Poppy Bowl, like all our products is made in house at our Yorkshire workshop and studio. Dims: D118cm H58cm , 75kg

Lateral Design Studio Flooding is a major problem in the UK and drainage has always taken a back seat. Our new designer channel drain covers have raised the bar and renewed interest in them by transforming a mundane necessity into pieces of art. We offer stylish & modern stainless steel, classic & sophisticated cast iron or smart & natural stone composite covers. These architectural quality drain components are available in a wide variety of designs to suit all applications and tastes. Your design intent can be further enhanced by adding our IP68 rated LED light bars which give your project a new added dimension at night.

Stonemarket Cordara is exceptionally hard Quartzitic sandstone from Rajasthan, available in a two size linear format that has been sawn to give an attractive appearance reminiscent of wood cut against the grain. The sawing process involves turning the stone 90 degrees from the bedding plane, which emphasises the natural marking and swirls within the stone in an elongated fashion. This type of cutting can only be done on particularly dense and hardwearing sandstones. The lightly textured sawn surface of Cordara has been carefully processed to bring out the rich natural brown shades and swirls of lighter grey present in this natural stone garden paving.

Wildflower Turf Ltd Our core product Wildflower Landscape Turf has been developed by the company using its unique ‘soil-less’ system that is weed suppressing, easy to handle and delivers a guaranteed wildflower environment. The turf is made up of 34 UK native wildflowers and grasses and is suitable for all soil types and a wide range of applications from small domestic gardens to large municipal areas and private estates. It naturally produces a bio-diverse habitat supporting birds, mammals, bees, butterflies and other invertebrate species.

All the shortlisted products will be displayed at The LANDCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September where practicing garden designers visiting the show will be asked to vote for their favourite product to help determine the overall winning product. To register for your free ticket to attend please visit www.landscapeshow.co.uk. The winner will be announced at The LANDSCAPE Show on 24th September 2014.
