Anne Curry Anne Curry’s sculptures are specifically designed for the outdoors and offer a perfect focus point whether in a garden, at the end of an avenue, in a courtyard or a large terrace. Whatever the setting, in formal English gardens, on the slopes of an olive grove in the South of France, on the shore of an ornamental lake in the Netherlands, her work has always enhanced its surroundings.
She has lately been involved in projects on the other side of the Atlantic with designers in the United States and Canada. Her most recent commission has been a bronze version of her “Helleborus Niger Seed Pod” for the garden of a private client in Toronto, and she is at the moment working on a project for a Florida hotel with a Boston based firm of designers. Anne is one of the exhibitors at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

AVS Fencing Ever since Managing Director, Ian Faires, founded the company in 1993, AVS Fencing Supplies have continued to grow and succeed. As part of a recent evaluation of the company’s direction and continued growth, it was decided that a new brand identity is needed to deliver a defined message of who AVS are along with reflecting their values. Sales & Marketing Director, Nick Summers, regards the rebrand as the mark of an exciting new era for AVS. ‘We are proud of where we have come from as a company and are extremely excited about the direction it is now going in’. Commenting on the slogan, prominently placed within the new logo, Managing Director (Designate), Neil Beglin, says, ‘Our heritage allows us to recognise that our success is based on the success of our customers. Their needs shape every decision we make as a company, and it is with that sentiment at our core that we say: “We’re on your side”.’ In 2014 AVS became FSC certified suppliers and achieved ISO 9001 registration from the British Assessment Bureau. They also recently opened their 9th branch at Herriard Sawmills in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Kate Gould This is an interesting garden landscaped on three different levels. At the lowest level lies a sunken terrace immediately outside a spacious kitchen and family room. From here, steps rise to level lawns that wrap around three sides of the garden, with a narrow side path to one side and a broad children’s’ play area to the other. On the eastern side, more steps ascend to a grassy terrace with elegant furniture designed by Patricia Urquiola of B&B Italia. Behind the chairs, there is a raised bed beneath a magnificent old Holm Oak. The water feature provides a striking focal point, its mirrored surface casting different reflections to add a sense of depth or, when running with sheets of water, forming a continuous, mesmerising ripple effect that is very relaxing. Polished steel is set into a wide, quartzite paddlestone wall, at its base an integral planter filled with Calla lilies to flower later in the summer once the alliums have faded. There were a few challenges in the garden, All the retaining walls were in place and deemed unattractive although necessary so had to be concealed behind instant hedging. The major issue was the ground in the area where the children play. It was a quagmire because the existing drainage was inadequate. No matter how great a design is, if the underlying structure fails or is poorly installed there will be trouble in years to come so rectifying and adding to the drainage in conjunction with the landscaping was vital and now the garden with its artificial turf play areas is used throughout the year. Although perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea artificial turf makes for useable play areas, is virtually maintenance free and looks good all year - something which really works for this family. GreenBlue Urban Leyland Street in Prescot connects the High Street with the pedestrianised Eccleston Street in Prescot town centre. Along this street were nine well-established London Plane trees which Knowsley Council decided should be removed, due to the increasing risk to properties and the breaking up of the footway through extensive surface root activity. Nine new Lime trees (Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’) were designed back into the scheme. As part of the Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative, Mouchel, devised the scheme, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, to repair, restore and improve the historic town centre. One of the challenges faced by the design team was to provide sufficient soil volume for the long term establishment of the trees due to the limited available space underneath the pavement, particularly with the presence of numerous statutory services. Following consultation with GreenBlue Urban, tree pits were created, providing a large enough soil volume spanning underneath the carriageway and linking two tree pits together. Linking the pits reduced the soil requirement from 35 cubic metres to 23 cubic metres of quality uncompacted topsoil for the combined tree pit. The GreeBlue Urban StrataCell system was installed spanning underneath the total width of the road due to its exceptional structural strength, which has been independently tested and is suitable for use underneath a carriageway. The StrataCell system is filled with good quality topsoil and provides a very healthy rooting profile underneath the paved surface. The tree health will be monitored as part of GreenBlue Urbans on-going commitment to ensuring that trees planted in urban areas reach their full potential. Come and talk to them about your project on their stand at LANDSCAPE.
Esthec® Terrace Esthec® Terrace has clearly gained ground in Florida in 2014. A growing number of architects and owners of luxury residences are won over by Esthec® Terrace’s appearance and functional properties. The opening of the Fort Lauderdale office has helped to increase exposure in this part of the country. One of these architects is John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects. This successful architect has designed many high-profile projects in the south of Florida. His way of designing is best described as a refined combination of form, vision, style and structure. Cooney is including Esthec® Terrace in an increasing number of his designs for luxury residences. He has used this comfortable and sustainable terrace decking system for a magnificent waterfront villa in Naples, for instance. Esthec® Terrace was installed around the water features with a view across the open water. Naples is not the only place where Esthec® Terrace can be seen. Esthec® has also installed its Terrace system at several luxury residences in Miami. The owners of one of these villas made a conscious choice for Esthec® Terrace because of its high-quality appeal. In this case there was no other option than to choose a decking product that perfectly matched the quality and style of the villa. And Esthec® Terrace met this aesthetic requirement. Other advantages become apparent as soon as you set foot on the decking material; it is comfortable to walk on with bare feet. It does not splinter and is slip resistant, even in wet areas around swimming pools. The entire range of products will be available to see on the Esthec stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Cranborne Stone The Knebworth Main Gate project was completed last year by Cranborne Stone and focused on the refurbishment of all four decorative stone piers that make up the dramatic entrance to the main house. From the start, the project involved the production of many highly detailed and intricate clay models from which moulds of the entire pier could be made and casts taken. Two key elements in this extensive refurbishment were the reclining Beasts and Bat Beasts holding barrels, which sit on the gate piers. Both elements had to be skilfully reproduced by our restoration team, however, very little of these highly original features remained on site, so what was identifiable, had to be carefully cross referenced with archive photos in order to enable the sculptors & craftsmen to reproduce the originals successfully. With a project such as this, Cranborne’s cast stone can be extremely economic compared to the natural stone alternative. The process of multiple casts, where one mould can be used consistently, works perfectly in a restoration project of this scale and budget. A very good example of this would be the Reclining Beasts, which rest either side of the gates. As four casts are required to complete the project, reproducing these elements in natural stone, perfectly every time, would be prohibitive in time and budget. Cranborne’s restoration team take great pride in their work helping to maintain and restore historic properties and have built a strong reputation for their attentive service. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Animal & Plant Health Agency We are facing an unprecedented threat from exotic plant and tree pests and diseases which if they were to become established have huge potential to change how our landscape looks and severely impact our biodiversity, economy and food security. The responsibility for preventing outbreaks of exotic notifiable diseases, reporting suspicion and managing eradication or containment action when they do occur is shared between government and stakeholders. Stakeholders include those who plan, manage and maintain green spaces. Familiarity with pest and disease threats can be gained by making use of the Risk Register. Over 700 organisms have so far been rated for the likelihood and impact of them becoming established in the UK or spreading further within the UK. The Risk Register is not intended to produce a simple list of the “top ten pests”, but to establish different priorities for regulation, research, contingency planning, publicity, surveys and detailed risk assessment, depending on the characteristics of the organism. There are practical steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of accidental introduction of exotic pests and diseases. Consider where you source your plants and trees, check that appropriate plant passports are present and quarantine imported material before planting out. Contaminated wooden packaging holds the risk of Asian Longhorn Beetle, a serious threat to trees. Asian Longhorn Beetle hatches out of exit hole of approx. 10 mm diameter, if you see this beetle please capture it in a container and contact the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate immediately. The Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate is part of the Animal and Plant Health Agency and will be exhibiting at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.

MCM MCM are a key supplier for the Embassy Garden development and have been for the past year now, supplying an array of aggregates and providing muck away services to several key contractors. The Embassy Garden project is a vital part of London’s growth as a world leading Metropolis paving the way to greener city living by developing the surrounding areas and building parks, playgrounds and sports pitches alongside affordable housing, shops and business opportunities. Embassy Gardens is also having green roofs installed to further showcase the green side of life that is becoming so popular in London and other major cities across the country. MCM also follows the same ethos of promoting green roofs and sustainable products through material development and the supply of compliant materials for SUDS and as a company are starting to engage with the growing market of a ‘Green London’ that the construction industry is starting to turn towards. Other services MCM provided to the Embassy Garden project is the removal of Asbestos that was identified and removed on a 2 day turn around as it the discovery of asbestos put a hold on the digging until the contaminated material was removed and disposed with so the site could resume normal working – This was a major problem as due to the size of the site as 2 days without the removal of muck away put a major dent in the timescale a site like this needs to work to. MCM are proud to provide materials and services on time and in the least environmentally impactful methods as possible for such a prestigious project and would like to talk to you about your current projects on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

David Austin Roses Wynyard Hall is set in the beautiful rolling countryside of County Durham. It was built in the 18th century by the Londonderry family but is now owned by Sir John Hall who restored it to its former glory and, for a number of years, had the ambition to create a wonderful new rose garden that would be open to the public. This ambition is finally coming to fruition as the garden covering just over 2 acres is being built and planted with the official opening planned for late July 2015.
The garden has been designed by Alistair W Baldwin Associates in collaboration with the world renowned rose specialist David Austin Roses. There are 3000 roses in the garden but it is very much a rose garden of the 21st century in which a wide range of English Roses, Old Roses, assorted shrub roses as well as climbers and rambler are displayed alongside a carefully composed series of companion plantings. While some spaces will radiate warmth, with deep yellow roses mingling with oranges and deep clarets, others will be cool and serene, where white and pale pink roses complement pale blues and violets. The garden is divided into a number of distinct areas each with its own character and colour theme. The Eastern end is more formal with a number of raised beds and water features that takes its inspiration from the original productive walled garden. The middle section takes its reference from the arts and crafts movement while the western end evokes the watery idyll of the enclosed paradise where surrounding columns are reminiscent of the cloistered wall and winding paths encourage the visitor to wander amongst the plants. David Austin Roses will be one of the exhibitors at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

New Wood Trees From the weeping willow to the majestic oak, everyone loves the impact of a beautiful tree. The only problem is that it takes half a lifetime, if not more for these trees to acquire their aesthetic charms. As a result, buying a tree from new can often test the patience of even the most committed designer, as it can take at least ten to fifteen years to begin to see the benefits of your investment. You can of course buy older, larger specimens however this is an expensive undertaking that is out of reach of most budgets. Originally imported from Europe but now grown in the UK, multi-stem trees have been cultivated for those who don’t want to wait. Instead of a single and somewhat formal vertical stem, a multi-stem tree has three, five or seven stems that grow and spread to enhance the overall presence of the tree. The multiple stems also act to broaden the canopy of the tree giving it a size worthy of a much older specimen. The art of producing a beautiful multi-stem originated from coppicing and involves cutting a tree right back and leaving it to regrow multiple stems from its base, or stool. This is followed, by skilful pruning and shaping, throughout the early years of the tree’s life. New Wood Trees can provide a complete range of trees, come and visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE 2015.

inspired me and started to develop wearable musical instruments with scientists, using motion sensors to map the movement of the wearer to different sounds. I was later approached by the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London, to be artist in residence at the School of Electrical Engineering, and design new sonic instruments with their students. I love my job!
Tell us about the inspiration for your project… During a residency at Eyebeam Centre for Art and Technology, in New York City, I was often drawn to the Brooklyn Bridge in search of inspiration. I became struck by the sounds that I could hear as I sat there- the clonking of footsteps on the wooden walkway (which reminded me of a giant glockenspiel), the whirring of bicycles, the drone of the traffic from below and sound of voices of the visitors as they walked by. It was at this point that I noticed the bridge reminded me of a giant harp and that all of these ‘journey sounds’ were resonating through its steel cables. Inspired, I began wondering if I could collaborate with scientists and musicians to develop a clip-on instrument that would enable pedestrians to play the bridge like a giant harp. The project involves several technical instruments, have you always had an interest and background in technology and sound? In 2004 I left my job as a fashion designer to explore the field of wearable technology. I was invited to The Banff Centre in Canada to collaborate with a team of engineers and develop a dress that could map the wearer’s gesture and emotional states to different soundscapes. This was the start of a new adventure in the world of research and a completely new way of thinking – I was addicted.Residencies followed in Montreal, Rotterdam, Boston and New York City. My projects involved wearable technologies that triggered light, movement and sound. I quickly realised that sound was the area that
How do you start making a wearable harp? Human Harp was inspired by reoccurring sketches that I drew of a woman attached to the Brooklyn Bridge via colourful musical strings. I liked the idea of the body connecting to architectural space in a really visual way. In my mind, these chords were an extension of the bridge’s cables, they were also a visual and sculptural representation of sound- enabling the user (or movician) to control pitch, intensity and volume of the vibrations as he or she lengthens, shortens and twangs the chords. I invented the term movician to describe the user of the harp - a hybrid artist who explores sound through expressive physical movement. We used these early sketches to develop the retractable string sound controller that was later tested on the Brooklyn Bridge. Tell us about the first Human Harp performance. In September 2012 I discovered that the 130th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge was imminent. I approached Mark Plumbley at the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary University of London, to see if they would help me develop an instrument that would ‘play’ the Brooklyn Bridge. They agreed and a London team was gathered, with a mission to develop eight string sound-controllers in time for the anniversary. Because of the tight deadline we split the design questions up between researchers at Queen Mary and the students at Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design. The day before the anniversary, dancer Hollie Miller and I packed the sound-controllers into our suitcase and headed to NYC. There we were met by Kathleen Flood from Intel’s Creators Project, who made a documentary describing our aspirations to transform the Brooklyn Bridge into a giant harp. We then spent the 130th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge filming Hollie on the bridge demonstrating and exploring the Human Harp.
The Creators Project documentary amassed 370,000 hits on Youtube and we received media attention from around the globe. Your next project will celebrate the 150th birthday of The Clifton Suspension Bridge, what do you plan for that? Working with musicians, dancers and scientists in the Bristol area, we plan to transform Clifton Suspension Bridge into a giant harp to celebrate the bridge’s anniversary and the opening of a new Visitor Centre in March 2015. We will develop the technology for the instrument and also ideas for the performance and composition through workshops on the bridge throughout 2014. So far we have managed to record the different frequencies running through the bridge’s hangers, or cables. These sounds will then be played by movicians who will use the retractable string sound-controllers attached to the bridge’s cables to release the deep rumbling murmur of Brunel’s iconic landmark. Each bridge structure is very different; does this mean the instruments used and performances will also differ? Each bridge has its own structural personality, which means the sound will differ dramatically from bridge to bridge. In Bristol, for example, we have already started working with civil engineers who are researching the bridge’s vibrations caused by wind, traffic and pedestrians. We have discovered that the frequencies on the Clifton Suspension Bridge differ dramatically to those of Tower Bridge. This will mean that we will need to create bespoke ways to capture the sounds of each bridge in response to their unique structures. Our performances are also tailored to the individual story of each bridge, drawing inspiration for the composition from its history, as well as local people’s memories and connections to the structure.
WORDS: DAVID MORRIS — IMAGES: © MARCUS PEEL — DRAWINGS: © JONH DOLAN
What comes next for the Human Harp, and what are your own future plans? We have been approached by different communities both in the UK and abroad to play their bridges. Before setting off on a global tour of other suspension bridges our main focus is to make the harp sound-controllers more robust and versatile, so that the Human Harp is intuitive, enjoyable and inspiring both to play and to watch. Treebox It’s widely known the East London postcode comes with a permit to be alternate, original and creative, in fact beyond that, this behaviour is actively encouraged and is what makes the area renowned for it’s forward and exuberant flare in design. It was no surprise then when Treebox received a call last year from Director, Harvey B-Brown, at his converted trendy warehouse in Shoreditch. Treebox consulted closely with Harvey to discuss how we could best create the smooth transition between the high-spec design features of the indoors to the adjacent courtyard. The completed design included a variety of evergreen plants to ensure the wall remained green throughout winter, in addition to a number of herb species which would not only pack a colourful punch but entice the other senses with their fragrance. The project was finished perfectly with the incorporation of a full length outdoor mirror, resulting in a Narnia of cascading green and illusively doubling the outdoor space.
Landscape
The story doesn’t end there though, in late February when Treebox revisited the wall for routine maintenance expecting some wilting from over the winter period, however, they were greeted with a thriving green wall, which looked rather enchanting coming from the somewhat barren surrounding streets. This project demonstrates sustainability and design working effortlessly for compact city living and displays the scope living walls can offer, not only for their aesthetic characteristics but as interactive features such as edible walls, pollution control and energy efficiency to name a few. Lumena Lighting Lumena have been bringing an exciting project to life over the last weeks – a brand new 12v Garden Lighting Showroom at their premises in Daventry, Northamptonshire. The aim was to present an elegant garden scene to customers and trade professionals for ideas on how 12v lighting can be used to greatly enhance gardens. Decking stretches across the main area of the showroom, along with 3 large raised flowerbeds which contain various plants and trees, illuminated with uplights, spreadlights, spike lights and more. The installation of Bricklights show how they can be incorporated into decking, not just walls, as well as a variety of decklights and step lights from the 30+ designs available. Step lights and in ground lights are often used as markers along edges of steps for safety purposes, but can look fantastic in their own right and installed to create soft or dramatic lighting effects dependent upon the design and positioning. After encouragingly positive feedback about our stands at the LANDSCAPE Show from trade professionals, the brand new showroom extends this experience throughout the year with the same high level of expertise on all aspects of 12v Garden Lighting. Come and talk to us this year on our stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bailey Artform The Facilities Management team at Loughborough University approached Bailey Artform to assist on external building works as part of their ongoing campus master plan. After sharing initial ideas, they were subsequently invited to work alongside the designated Landscape Architects, BCA Landscape of Liverpool responsible for the overall design of a large open space at the heart of the campus. The scheme consisted of two distinct areas; an open plaza plus a more formal, secluded seating garden. The landscape architect was looking for a simple yet considered design made from quality materials. In addition to providing an aesthetic appeal that complimented the inspirational nature of campus life, it was also important that the products chosen were tough and durable. After a relatively short process of discussions, the final products and layout were selected, with similarities echoed between the two different bench designs used in the separate seating areas. The overall weight of the Giada Benches was an additional feature that influenced product choice, as it would help to deter any unwanted movement once installed. Finally Salgueiro Granite Blocks were chosen for their simplicity, exceptional value and effortless functionality. This flexibility of use was aptly demonstrated by their application on site, acting both as a plinth for the Campus signage and also as a part retaining wall. Perennial A new trade initiative has been launched by London Stone, a leading supplier of natural stone paving and bespoke stone products to the trade. The Trade Club, which is free to join, offers its members unique benefits including exclusive discounts and early offers, access to the new ‘24/7 Stone’ online sales platform, online company profiles and much more, and for every new member, London Stone will donate £10 to charity. Perennial, the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping all horticulturalists in need, will benefit from donations, along with Greenfingers, the charity that creates gardens at children’s hospices. Steven Walley, Managing Director of London Stone says, “The landscape industry’s greatest strength is the people it attracts. They make our industry so special and unique. Coming from landscape backgrounds, my fellow directors and I are always looking for ways to help strengthen and support the industry and London Stone Trade club does this, in many ways.” Perennial is the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting all horticulturalists, working in or retired from horticulture. The charity offers free and confidential advice and support to people affected by disability, illness, poverty, financial hardship, old age or any number of life’s challenges. Trade support for the charity has significantly grown in recent years and there are now many ways in which companies can support the work of the charity. Anita Bates continues, “It’s absolutely fantastic that so many companies are seeing the benefits of supporting the charity that looks after horticulturalists. Some see us a little like an insurance policy – you never know when you might need to turn to us for advice, support or financial assistance. But with so many projects on the go, we have opportunities for all companies, large or small, to make a real difference to our work.” Come and talk to Perennial on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to see how you can help.

Guillot-Bourne 145 years of passion for plants has meant that for Guillot-Bourne delivering the right tree at the right place is a permanent target and 2014 has been a successful year with some magnificent private and public European projects. On one hand Guillot-Bourne has provided specimen trees planted in modern pots or specimen coniferous or standard trees for outstanding city projects. On the other hand they have completed some conscientious planting in some of the nicest private gardens in France and Switzerland. In our nurseries specimen-trees are always selected by the customer themselves. The hand-digging guarantees a perfect root-ball and best growing opportunities for the biggest specimen trees. They also carefully load the trees onto special trucks which is very important for an optimal delivery to the construction site. Guillot-Bourne know how much quality matters to their customers, and take extra care to ensure the best quality every time. To assist the planting further and the final lifting, they can offer their customers the opportunity to work with some of their best technicians, which are sent to the construction site to assist with the actual planting itself. Their technicians will help with all aspects of the planting with one common goal, the satisfaction of the customer. Q Lawns While plants and gardens were hibernating this winter, the folks at Q Lawns were busy re-inventing their online image. Early in March 2015, the new Q Lawns website went live. This is first of the three websites to be revamped. The super new website is mobile responsive and has some great features. First and foremost is the automated turf selector to help visitors decide which of the 11 grades of turfgrass featured on the website is the best choice for their project and budget. All the visitor needs to do is answer 5 simple questions about the lawn they’re planning, how it will be used, its immediate environment and the amount of ongoing maintenance desired. The website will then flag up the turf grades that best meet the requirements. Another unique feature is the turfgrass information centre. This is a central hub for the website and helps the visitor to find help with any aspect of turf, turfing and lawn care. From finding the best prices, to learning how to lay turf and working out the best lawncare regime for the season, this website has it all. Turf may not be the newest or most glamorous landscaping material out there but because the lawn is the backbone to so many garden designs, knowing where to buy good quality grass is absolutely essential. With their new website, Q Lawns aim to help designers and contractors source and buy turf with ease. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

The Garden Trellis Company The Garden Trellis Company were approached by Andrew Wenham, a North London based Garden Designer, to look at a major re-development project he was working on. He had been commissioned to design a garden for a site which was in the process of being excavated. His design included living walls and required some very bespoke contemporary panels to compliment and add interest to what was going to become a very high garden wall. Using their extensive knowledge and experience they designed panels and used materials to ensure exceptional levels of accuracy and stability. In a scheme of this nature The Grden Trellis Company understand that their customers and their clients will accept nothing less, to achieve this they used a specially modified timber species to provide the required stability and worked to very small tolerances in the manufacture process.
Landscape
This scheme also required precise installation by their team of skilled and dedicated fitters. The Garden Trellis Company ensured they carried out the necessary ‘eye for detail’ demanded throughout all stages of this project. The final results speak for themselves and needless to say the designer and his client were thrilled with the overall effect. Come and taljk to The Garden Trellis Company about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

SmartFire Outside space can be kept warm even during the winter, thanks to revolutionary new bio-fuel technology. EcoSmart outdoor fireplaces use bio-ethanol, a renewable and clean burning liquid fuel that produces heat without the smoke, soot, ash or embers of a traditional fire and results in a clean emission. The stylish fireplaces do not need a power connection so can be moved to different locations and cast an ambient glow around the venue. The eco-friendly fireplaces are available from Smart Fire UK, the only distributor for EcoSmart Fire in Britain. The fires can transform a garden area, courtyard, terrace, patio, pool area or deck and create an inviting focal point for guests. Unlike traditional outdoor fires, they do not require daily cleaning and are made from weather resistant materials, meaning they will last for years. Among the stylish designs is the award winning Stix, which offers a contemporary twist on the traditional campfire. Created by acclaimed international designer Hiroshi Tsunoda, Stix consists of tubular stainless steel sticks secured around an EcoSmart burner. London Stone
Outside of the usual worlds of designing gardens for private clients and at shows Paul is passionate about community projects and skills training. This year he became a Trustee of Walworth Garden Farm, a charity community garden in south London who offer a range of education and outreach programmes along side engagement and learning.
London Stone are excited to introduce Trade Club, completely free of charge to join and offering a wealth of exclusive benefits. 24/7 Stone, available exclusively to Trade Club members, allows you to check stocks, place orders, obtain quotes, review order history and pay bills online at any time, saving valuable time and helping you to work efficiently.
Paul is Mentor for the RHS Young Designer of the Year competition which has run now for a few years. Paul has mentored the designers in 2014 and has returned to mentor again this year to continue that role. The Young Designer competition is a show case for emerging talent and Paul holds monthly sessions with the young designers on everything from evolving their designs and planing for show site conditions to touring nurseries and specialist growers to give the young designers an opportunity to see what is available. This year the young designers have been set an additional challenge of creating in collaboration, a garden for one of the Royal Horticultural Societies London shows in spring 2015.
Spec Uploader is an innovative function, aimed at streamlining the tendering process. Designers can upload their project specifications and invite their chosen contractors to quote for the work. London Stone will then send quotes for the stone materials to both the designer and the specified contractors.
For part of this year Paul spent time with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society working on a variety of pop-up gardens throughout the city and business district along with some outreach programmes rejuvenating neighbourhood parks. Paul is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September.
Trade Club members will each receive their own professional Connect profile on the London Stone website. Connect profiles include company contact details and a biography, plus an image gallery of completed work. These profiles can be searched by others in the garden design and landscaping trade, or by homeowners embarking on a garden project. On top of all this, Trade Club members can enjoy an additional Club Discount, a free London Stone Sample Box and can also take advantage of free, on-site training in the GftK pointing and Dry Treat sealant product ranges. For every new sign up in 2015, London Stone will donate £10 to be split between their horticultural charity partners, Perennial and Greenfingers. LANDSCAPE SHOW, BATTERSEA PARK, LONDON TUESDAY 22 & WEDNESDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2015
Gary Scott St Ives in Cornwall has long been a mecca for artists and its standing as such has been crystallised with the success of Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. For a sculptor then, it doesn’t get more exciting and challenging than to be commissioned to create a new sculpture at the heart of the town. The work entitled ‘Free Spirit’ commemorates the life of Kenneth Lindon-Travers who developed St Nicholas Court where the sculpture now resides. The brief was for a contemporary work which would reflect Kenneth’s love of the sea, art and St Ives.
As well as being commissioned for work Gary has been in prestigious exhibitions such as ING Discerning Eye, the Cork Street Open and the Affordable Art Fair and shown at venues from KPMG’s Canary Wharf to Waterperry House, Oxford. He has recently won the Art Academy London’s Mixed Media Sculpture Prize and was shortlisted for the Threadneedle Sculpture Prize. ‘I aim to produce work which feels dynamic and conveys life and energy. For me it is these qualities that make sculpture feel powerful and ultimately mesmerising.’ Come and talk to Gary on his stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
‘To be commissioned to undertake a sculpture for St Ives is a huge honour and I hope that the work reflects the free spirit that Kenneth was,’ says Gary Scott. ‘In working up my proposal, I drew upon my own love of the sea and of the human form; characteristics I also observed in the paintings undertaken by Kenneth himself’.

Adbruf Adbruf was recently involved in the refurbishment of the pathways at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire. The zoo’s walk ways were in need of resurfacing where the crushed stone surface had become uneven over the years from the 500,000 annual visitor footfall which could create problems for disabled access, pushchairs and elderly visitors. The area had also become prone to ponding in wet weather which had both practical and aesthetic issues. The total area in need of resurfacing was 3,000/m² and work was split into two phases on a tight schedule to minimise disruption to visitors, staff and animals. The brief was to design pathways that would be aesthetically pleasing, practical, low maintenance and free draining to a set budget. An Adbruf Resin Bound surface was applied to a depth of 18mm over the entire surface of the sub base. This created an excellent hard wearing surface that blends in with the surroundings. The newly surfaced areas are now accessible to all and will help to enhance the overall experience for visitors Come and talk to Adbruf about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.
Jardinieres The first orange planters were invented in the 17th century by André Le Nôtre, the gardener of King Louis XIV for the château, the Palace of Versailles, near Paris. Exotic fruits were “fashionable” at the royal table in Versailles, but delivering them from their countries of origin was not successful. So it was decided that the trees would be growing directly in Versailles. Since the plants were sensitive to the harsh winters in Versailles, an orangery was built to accommodate the fragile exotic trees, citrus trees and palm trees, where they will be moved to spend the winter months, from November to April. Rather than planting and replanting these trees two times a year, André Le Nôtre conceived the idea of the portable planter where the trees could remain permanently all year long, instead of stressing the plants and trees by transplanting several times a year from the gardens to the orangery. Because of the severity of the harsh climate in France and the heavy weight of the trees, the orange planters were manufactured with an exceptional solidity. Today, the garden planter boxes from Jardinierres are still fabricated in this traditional way to sustain those rough conditions. A true orange planter must have four removable sides, so that over time, as the plant develops its root system by searching for nutrients, to allow the growth of the tree, it is necessary to prune the roots and add new soil at times. Removing the plant from the box is often very difficult, almost impossible for the large boxes. The four removable sides make this work easier. Come and see more in the range from Jardinierre at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

H Crowther Limited For over a century H. Crowther Ltd has been able to reproduce true copies of 18th to 20th century lead statues that have been lost over the years. Within the last year alone they have had the pleasure of being involved in one restoration project and the creation of two new gardens. For one of which they were able to replace a complete set of the “Bromsgrove Seasons”. Working alongside the clients they were able to produce the “Ellermans Water Cistern” when once in place complimented the large seasons perfectly. “The Walker Farm Cistern”, an impressive 9ft cistern with Kalides “Swan Boy” as its centre piece is another client’s vision which they were able to bring to life. In addition to that they have had the honour of restoring many antique pieces, ranging from an immense fountain by Gilbert Bayes to a pair of just as important early 20th century Vases. H. Crowther has possibly one of the largest collection of lead garden ornaments, ranging from bird baths and figures to fountains, planters and cisterns. To the rear of the house, swathes of long grasses and meadow flowers are animated by the breeze giving the terrace a wharflike feel.
Meadowview is situated on the edge of a rural village in Bedfordshire and was designed as a family home for a retired couple. The plot, enclosed by hedgerows and mature trees, borders onto an expanse of arable fields. The site has been divided into different areas by the house and hard landscaping, setting up an interplay between the building, gardens and distant landscape.
The abstract nature of the surrounding agricultural landscape and vernacular buildings has informed the design, resulting in a house with a simple linear form with a horizontal emphasis. Small differences in height make a big difference to what you can see in a flat landscape so three datums were struck across the site expressed in bands of slate, white render and timber cladding to mark the viewing platforms. On the ground floor, areas of glazing set up close, sensual relationships with the garden whilst the first floor offers a more detached experience of the landscape with long views framed like pictures on the wall. The sweet chestnut clad box overhangs the ground floor so that from across the fields it looks like it is floating over the hedgerows.

Tamata During the last year Tamata (UK) Ltd have been involved in some glorious projects dealing with all walks of life. Hillier Nurseries used some of their trees in their gold medal winning garden at Chelsea Flower Show in 2014 (amazingly, their 69th consecutive Gold) and Tamata are thrilled to say that they will be incorporating their trees again in their 2015 garden. Emerald Lace is a beautiful dissectum variety with bright, lime green leaves that turn red in autumn. It requires shelter from the wind but it is generally quite sun and heat tolerant. Four of these plants have been ordered by Hilliers and will be included in what we all hope will be their 70th consecutive gold medal winning garden. The Tamata trees will only be a small feature in what will undoubtedly be a spectacular garden, but Tamata are very proud to have been given this exciting opportunity. Emerald Lace is just one of many varieties that Tamata supply. Come along to their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and see them for yourself.

Tobermore Almost 60 years after Her Majesty the Queen opened the original Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport in 1955, HM and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the new Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal at a prestigious ceremony attended by over 1, 000 people. The new terminal, which is complete with an incredible expanse of world class paving products from Tobermore, is a £2.5 billion project and marks the latest phase of an £11 billion private sector investment that has transformed Heathrow. Heathrow’s Terminal 2 is steeped in airport history, and so, it was inevitable that the exciting development of the new Terminal 2 would earn a wealth of media attention. The spectacular redevelopment plan at Terminal 2 has taken place over a period of four hectic years. The amazing new terminal has been designed by Grontmij, the leading European Consulting & Engineering practice and the landscape masterpiece was devised by global architecture and design practice, Aedas. The incredibly renowned Zaha Hadid Architects also designed the breath-taking glass roof incorporated on the building. The project was then constructed by Laing O’Rourke, the privately owned international construction and civil engineering enterprise. An extensive expanse of Tobermore’s fabulous Sienna and Sienna Duo block paving in sparkling Silver has been installed on the grounds at Terminal 2. Sienna complements the new Terminal 2 building perfectly and has achieved a sharp, contemporary look. Sienna encompasses a coarse textured surface, exposing glittering granite aggregates which produce a sophisticated, distinctive appearance, similar to natural granite. The aesthetic qualities of Sienna permit incorporation on any type of application. Come and see samples on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Paul Hensey Paul Hensey drifted into Garden Design around 1999. Originally an Industrial Designer, he now has an approach to landscapes and gardens that builds on his disciplined use of materials and engineering skills. Heading the practice, Green Zone Design, he has won several RHS medals, including Gold, Best in Show and Most Innovative Garden at Chelsea. The constraints of smaller gardens are a challenge for a designer and Paul has a fondness for designing intimate spaces, alongside the occasional wildflower meadow. In addition to designing gardens Paul is a Member and Director of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD), having responsibility for the Adjudication and Assessment of new members. Paul is also a very active lecturer, presenting in excess of 20 talks a year, tutoring at The London College of Garden Design and University of Portsmouth at Sparsholt. Paul’s appreciation and passion of technology and materials appears monthly in the Garden Design Journal; with a monthly column since early 2010 and over 50 articles to date. Paul runs regular courses on CAD across the UK and further afield. His approach and skills are also used to support the work of several companies as they develop CAD versions of their product ranges as well supporting other designers as they make the transition into a CAD based design workflow. Alloway Timber Timeless Timber, a new brand of garden buildings and sheds, is now available from Alloway Timber. Designed to take centre stage in gardens, Timeless Timber sheds create additional living space without the hassle or expense of traditional home extensions. New homeowner research shows that one in five people in the UK can’t find space to be alone in their own home and have considered constructing garden buildings to create much-needed “me space”. With half of Brits admitting all of their storage space is full of clutter, and one in three (32%) finding their current home too small, high-quality garden sheds are now being seen as a solution for homeowners craving extra living space. Neil Horton, sales director, said: “We carried out this research to highlight some of the challenges facing homeowners across the UK. We found that more space is longed for and that most people would rather extend their existing home than move house, but all too often an extension is unaffordable. The traditional cluttered garden shed at the bottom of the garden is a thing of the past. A Timeless Timber garden building creates stylish living space at a fraction of the cost of a traditional extension, but with all the same benefits. The needs of the homeowner are changing, and this product range responds to that by offering durable, secure and stunning looking designs that transform outdoor space into an extension of your home.” Come and see the entire range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

London College Of Garden Design As part of their one-year Garden Design Diploma students at the London College of Garden Design have helped plant a new garden at Warren House in Kingston upon Thames. The garden is the brainchild of author VKL Good who was inspired by the gardeners that have worked there for over 150 years and the famous Victorian plant hunters who worked for the Veitch Coombe Wood Nursery upon which the gardens partly stood. Ms Good and Warren House have commissioned garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin to redesign the walled garden that will feature many of the plants that were brought back from around the world. Ms Good said “We wanted to acknowledge the skills of the Warren House gardeners over many decades who have maintained this garden for future generations to enjoy.” The Veitch Nurseries and family were famed for sending out legendary plant hunters such as EH Wilson and William Lobb and introducing iconic plants, trees and conifers to Britain. Many are now instantly recognizable in European gardens and all started out being propagated in Coombe Wood when they were sent back by the plant hunters from distant countries. Designer Fisher Tomlin said “This is a rare opportunity to celebrate the plant hunters who risked their lives to bring back exotic plants to Britain for a public that was hungry for new and unusual specimens for their gardens and parks. So this is very much a celebration of plants and gardening and it has been great that students have been able to be involved and get practical planting design experience for a real heritage project.” Come and listen to Andrew Fisher Tomlin who is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September.

Graduate Landscapes Lazing in the garden with friends and family is an important ritual not to be missed out on during the long, and hopefully hot, days of summer. Designing and building your garden during the cold seasons gives you the opportunity to enjoy yourself during the summer. When considering your garden design, it is important to take the needs of the users of your space – you, your family and friends – in to account to make the experience a comfortable and inviting one, which will have them wanting to come back for more. It is important to locate your terrace, deck or patio in a warm, sunny position. Often afternoon gatherings soon lead on to evening ones, so it is best to have a position which receives the last of the evening sun and if possible much of the afternoon. To provide ultimate comfort for your guests it is important to furnish the area correctly. Similarly to inside your home, terraces should be well sized to allow an appropriate table and seating to be incorporated. Engage the senses if you can. Planting should be attractive and inspirational, as well as in keeping with the rest of the garden. Summer scent and colour are always on people’s wish list but it is important to consider all year round structure and form of the planting. In design terms Graduate Landscapes sometimes consider planting as the walls of the outside room we are creating and often in such a space, overhead planes or your ‘ceiling’ is created from either trees or arbours. Providing this sense of enclosure to your space will keep your guests content, as they will have a similar feeling to being in a living or dining room. Come and talk to Christopher James, General Manager and Landscape Designer of Graduate Landscapes Ltd on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Quick Hedge Not without pride Quick Hedge are pleased to announce that their brand new website is online. Quick Hedge took the premium brand approach. QuickHedge is not exactly a product for the masses, not evidently mainstream, so they challenged their web agency to develop a prestigious, seducing and inspirational design, look & feel. Having searched for inspiration with prestigious brands like Breitling, Riva, Weber and others, they believe they have successfully created what they set out to do. You will notice that they are single mindedly focusing on getting their core message across: “Privacy within one day”. Of course they sell instant hedges, but in terms of ‘benefits’ they have a strong and appealing promise to the customer offering ultimate privacy within one day. As differentiating values we highlight the ultimate quality, the mature age upon delivery, the beauty of the hedges, the shape, health and durability Why not see some hedges in action on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Urman Joop Bardoel, runs a company called Urman, an independent international supplier of baked paving bricks from the Netherlands. Just like their parent company, de brabander, they are specialists in characteristic bricks for landscapes and the public space. The warm, natural colours of bricks create a special atmosphere of very high quality. The natural look of baked bricks in the urban environment gives plazas and parks a friendly effect. Streets made out of bricks last decades. Bricks are a very environmentally friendly product, they are made out of a variety of clays. A product created by nature itself. During the process of baking, the bricks get their pure colours trough the combination of heat and oxygen. Over the years a special patina coating envelops the bricks. This process causes the bricks to get a worn out look, which creates a very pretty and timeless character. Joop Bardoel has passion for bricks in every fibre of his being. Joop knows all of the varieties and how each and every one of them can be implemented in public space. This love and passion has developed itself since his 14th birthday, when he started working during vacations in one of the oldest brick baking factories in the Netherlands. The scents, the baking process, the variety of colours, Joop knows them all. This knowledge allows him to be able to determine what variety of brick is best suited and the prettiest for the job. All according to the wishes of the landscaping architects and developers of the urban environment of course! If you want to be able to make your project shine and get that unique atmosphere that you have been looking for then come and talk to Joop Bardoel on the Urman stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and see for yourself what possibilities lie ahead to make your project in the city or landscape stand out.

Designed to encourage more young people into sport through play, rope and net obstacles feature heavily throughout the park. The Scots Pine play area is Intermingled with the pine, felled oaks were installed supporting an undulating net structure that spans a valley and allows easy access to canopy height. As the valley sides steepen the net gives way to tree houses, tunnels and bridges. The highest point, a giant ‘hollow’ tree allows a clambering route up within the thickness of the trunk to the loftiest perch. The scale, range and challenge of the structures leave plenty of scope for children to test limits of courage and ability. Soft Mulch Soft Mulch (UK) Ltd has recently been awarded a ÂŁ66,000.00 contract with Fleet Town Council to supply and install a network of new pathways through the sometimes in-accessible woods.
Long Rake Spar Technology continues to play an increasingly important role within landscaping and a successful website can make the process of sourcing materials simpler and stress-free. At the beginning of 2015, Long Rake Spar launched a new website, building upon its experience as a decorative aggregate supplier to landscapers and garden designers. The new site has been developed to give landscapers the opportunity to access information about individual products and the process of supply at Long Rake Spar. Each product can be viewed in high resolution representative images; both wet and dry, to give a realistic impression of how materials, in numerous sizes appear in different weather. In addition to this, the website includes a unique quoting tool allowing the in-house team to provide immediate feedback to landscapers, with tailored information depending on their individual decorative aggregate requirements. Users can also follow developments within the company through the News tab and find inspiration in the Case Studies section, alongside exploring the import and export resources which make Long Rake Spar such a distinguished supplier. The new website has been developed to aid specifiers by being easily navigable and accessible on a range of devices, allowing to it be viewed on the move on a day to day basis, whilst with clients, in the office or on projects.
Following a successful playground surface installation in 2014 the council worked closely with Soft Mulch (UK) Ltd to create a long term solution to a constant issue with the pathways there. The chosen surface for the pathways was PathBond, a specially formulated recycled rubber bonded surface designed to withstand the elements, traffic, wildlife and irregular flooding of the Fleet Forest, whilst giving a very natural look. PathBond is a completely porous product which is extremely robust and durable and will not freeze making it a perfect choice for pathways. PathBond is available in a range of natural colours. The almost one mile of PathBond in Fleet will be Earth Brown. Come and see the range of Soft Mulch products on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
