London College of Garden Design London College of Garden Design (LCGD) Graduates triumphed once again at the Society of Garden Designers Awards with two Graduates receiving two awards each. Emily Erlam won in the ‘Small Budget Garden’ category for “The Experimental Station” for which the judges said ‘A modest design that is fundamentally more interesting because of it. Simple but fun.’ Emily was also jointly awarded the Future Designer award for her ‘Interesting modern take on a country garden” built by Landform Consultants. She said ‘To win an award is an amazing feeling. For me the award was an opportunity to take a pause and reflect on the success of the garden and know for this moment, this garden was recognised for being great.‘ An LCGD Graduate once again triumphed in the Student of the Year Award with Tom Massey, who graduated in 2015, winning both Domestic and Commercial categories for work completed on his one-year Garden Design Diploma course. Tom said, “having my work singled out and praised by judges Sarah Eberle and Cleve West, both multiple award-winning designers, was an honour. LCGD provided me with an inspiring education, hopefully winning the awards will provide the catalyst I need to launch my new career.” Andrew Wilson, Director of Garden Design Studies at LCGD said ‘we’re delighted that our students are leaving the college with a firm basis in design that is recognised by the Society of Garden Designers. To have graduates winning awards so consistently is testament to the skill and professionalism of our tutors and lecturers that they meet on the course.’ The London College of Garden Design will be holding seminars at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park, come along and listen to some of their past students and current tutors.

Michael Blow MRBS Michael Blow is one of the featured exhibitors at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park. We caught up with him recently to discuss his work. Michael said; “The inspiration for the public art commission ‘Bee Wing’ sculpture came from a workshop that I ran with year 5 at St John’s Mead primary school in Chipping Sodbury.” “The children had a fun afternoon drawing pictures and writing poems about bees, some of which were very insightful. A couple of the children drew with such intricacy that I couldn’t help but use aspects of that for the final design, both honeycomb and the wing imagery stood out and I decided to combined them, choosing just a few of the words to run round the outside.” “I carved and finished the sculpture by hand using traditional tooling techniques to bring the stone to life picking out bits of the honeycomb with gold leaf to add an extra dimension.” Come and see some of Michael’s work up close on his stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Squareroot Planters Squareroot Planters began developing a range of clever interchangeable planting systems nearly 10 years ago, and coming from a product design and engineering background has always embraced a challenge when solving site specific problems or general product innovations. Abandoning wood in favour of aluminium to deliver life time durability and dramatically reduce weight took the planters into a different league, particularly for roof terraces where loading calculations became an issue. No two sites or jobs are ever the same and when it comes to truly bespoke work involving gradient slopes, staggered walls and access for maintenance issues, Squareroot have the technology, the engineering skills and years of experience. A recently completed job on a Kensington roof terrace meant that valuable floor space was gained enabling the owners to have a table and chairs in their confined outside space as well as an extensive planting scheme. This was possible by utilising the low walls and railing plinths to accommodate the bespoke planters. As well as an extensive survey, Squareroot provided 3D CAD visuals showing various design options as well as incorporating variations in floor level for drainage etc. The computer model was then transferred into Squareroot’s manufacturing facility ensuring a first time fit everytime. Squareroot is currently working on a similar project in Southern France where a sloping site, specific planting requirements and the strict local vernacular were all part of the design process. Squareroot has its own in-house design, manufacturing, spray painting, delivery and installation facility in the UK so that every project is nurtured through all stages of its development. See their range and discuss your ideas on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Kate Gould Kate Gould is one of our featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park. In this preview magazine we feature one of her recent projects. A garden which was designed for a couple who love to entertain and therefore it included designated areas for dining and comfortable seating. The original garden was overgrown and waterlogged so the new wish list was to open up the space and include a fireplace, water feature, vertical green walls for year round interest, a small lawn, electric sun awning, designer furniture by Fendi and a sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn. (The green wall established itself quickly and within two weeks of being planted a pair of robins were making a nest in one of the cells.) Bespoke Moorish influenced mirror backed bronzed ‘trellis’ breaks up the green wall boundaries and creates reflection whilst cream limestone on the floor opens up the space. Warm buff coloured Norstone ‘Sahara’ stone cladding and bespoke metal finishes have been used on the fireplace, storage cupboards and water feature to create a unified and stylish garden that can be used year round. Come along and listen to Kate Gould at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park at 1.00pm on Wednesday the 14th of September.

Candice Bees Fine Art We recently spoke to Candice about her work, “When I look at a subject, I am not just looking at form, I am looking at behaviour and character. I believe that this is the key to bringing my creations to life.” “I spent many years creating art in 2D using pencil, oils and watercolour to study the diverse animal kingdom. Often I was asked to paint a portrait of someone’s pet. My main request was that I could meet the animal myself. When I met the animal, I was looking for that subtlety of behaviour which was a key identifier to that specific animal. When people saw my completed pieces, the common reaction was I don’t understand, it’s not just any dog / cat / horse, it’s mine. How do you do it?” “Since I discovered the amazing property’s of wire I have been inspired to create in 3D. Once again I have turned to the natural world for inspiration. With wire I have the ability to create fluidity and delicacy without sacrificing form. I have continued studying behaviour and character to ensure that my pieces are truly representational of the subjects. I have now taken on a large studio which has given me the opportunity to create the larger pieces. My current commission is a 2m high tree with a flock of starlings flying through it. Recently I exhibited and sold a sculpture of group of starlings at the Society of Wildlife Artists exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London. Other recent pieces include a life sized whippet and a life sized urban fox. With each creation I am working to ensure that the character of the animal is evident. Unlike bronzes and other cast sculptures, each piece has its’ own unique character which, in turn makes it extra special.” Come and see samples of her work on her stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Lumena Lights Brand new for Spring 2016, Lumena’s elegant hanging lights, the ‘Starlight’ and ‘Pergolux’, are fantastic examples of ornamental landscape lighting – decorative during the day, and eye-catching, functional lights when darkness falls. Available with different chain lengths, they are ideal for outhouses, verandas, outdoor seating areas, BBQ areas, pergolas and trees. Once dark, the 12v ‘Starlight’ creates a beautiful 360° ‘twinkling’ lighting effect to sheltered areas with the light shining through its patterned cylindrical body. The smaller ‘Pergolux’ is designed to shine downwards, perfect for hanging over eating areas and is available in 12v and 240v. A protective glass lens produces a higher weatherproof rating than many other hanging light at IP54. Coloured dichroic lenses can be used with the ‘Pergolux’ for instant and effective coloured light. Three finishes are available, suitable for different gardens and lighting schemes. Satin Silver anodised aluminium is great for more contemporary surroundings, whereas Rustic Brown powder coated aluminium and Natural Copper blend in well with outdoor surroundings such as brick, plants and tree bark. Importantly, both lights can be used with replaceable LED bulbs (MR16 or GU10) which reduce running and maintenance costs due to long lifespan and low wattage. Another great feature of the ‘Starlight’ and ‘Pergolux’ is the long 5m length of cable supplied for easier installation, less cable joins and more choice on the position of the light fittings. Lumena have many new additions for 2016 which are available online and will be showcased at the Landscape Show in September. Step Change Design Garden designers Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell from Step Change Design went on a research journey to answer a deceptively simple question: “Why aren’t care home gardens more actively used?”
British Sugar TOPSOIL Sheffield-based landscape contractor John Oxley of JE Oxley Landscaping Limited has worked with garden designer Rosemary Blakesley for 25 years. Their latest project – returning the uninspiring grassed gardens and paddock area of an old rectory near Newark in Nottinghamshire to their former Georgian glory – has demanded some major changes to levels, achieved with retaining walls and over 500 tonnes of British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Landscape20 topsoil. John has already been on site for three years with his team developing this extensive private garden to Rosemary’s plan, which includes formal lawns, traditional herbaceous borders, a children’s play area and a kitchen garden. John’s long association with Rosemary, who receives all her commissions through personal recommendation, means he is acutely aware of her insistence on the quality, consistency and sustainability of all materials used in her projects: “We use Landscape20 topsoil because it is fully certified to BS 3882:2015, which means we can be confident it will be of a high standard and produce good results” explained John. “We can buy much cheaper soil delivered to site but we can’t be sure that it won’t be contaminated or contain glass, so the certification gives me, the homeowners and Rosemary peace of mind. She works to very high standards so the fact that she can see a full analysis of the product helps her make informed decisions.” Garden designers and specifiers will be able to talk to the TOPSOIL team on their stand at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show and see for themselves why Landscape20 is the choice of design and contracting professionals.
“We had little idea at the beginning just what a transformative experience this would be,” said Debbie. 50 care homes across the UK and Ireland wanted to take part. The designers could see they weren’t the only ones asking this question; the care sector had concerns too. They scaled up their modest ambitions to work with 6 care homes and recruited 24 into the study in the summer of 2013. This was clearly an opportunity to gather definitive data to find out what the design sector may be missing in its work with care sector clients and particularly for those with residents living with dementia. “When we look back at ourselves immediately prior to the research, it’s clear that we held some really powerful conditioning and beliefs about our work as designers and the design guidance we followed,” Mark said. “We aren’t the same people now as we were then. The research journey we embarked on has transformed our understanding of ourselves as designers and connected us to our other skill sets from earlier career paths in management and training.” They had thought the answer would lie outside in the care home gardens themselves. However, a patch of weeds in a scruffy care home garden on their very first site visit turned these assumptions upside down. They needed to look inside the care setting, too. Debbie and Mark are two of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. You can hear about where their research journey took them and the uncomfortable findings they made that affect the way designers need to work with care sector clients during their presentation and Q & A session on Wednesday 14th September at 1pm.

Streetlife The grand opening of Park Nauerna has recently taken place in Assendelft. Streetlife provided several benches and pedestrian bridges for the Dutch town’s new green public space. The new park was built on a landfill site managed by waste management company Afvalzorg that had become redundant. The site is set to be transformed into a 60-hectare nature and recreation park in three stages. The grand opening celebrated the first 12 hectares as ready for public use. For the project, Streetlife provided R&R Curve Benches, R&R Circular Benches and a Solo CorTen Bridge. All products are equipped with All Black beams. All Black is a compound of recycled plastics (polyethylene and polypropylene) with a rough texture that takes its name from the fact that it retains its colour throughout a structure. This extremely durable and environmentallyfriendly construction material has a long life and is maintenance-free. Ink and paint have a hard time adhering to All Black and cannot penetrate into it. UV stabilisation also allows it to permanently retain its black colour. The combination of All Black beams with CorTen or galvanized steel give the Streetlife products an even sturdier, more robust appearance. The names engraved on the All Black backrests of the R&R Circular Bench will serve as a permanent reminder of the driving forces behind the park’s creation. With the construction of the park, waste management company Afvalzorg is giving the area back to the community. Plans for this ultra-sustainable park came about in an active project group involving stakeholders from the local area. Park Nauerna will be expanded in phases over the next few years with Streetlife contributing more products to the project. Come and see examples form the range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bespoke Resin Surfaces Bespoke Resin Surfaces specialise in the installation of resin driveways, patios and footpaths and cover a broad spectrum of work including commercial and private commissions. Projects include playgrounds, tree pits, car parks and highways in addition to private driveways, footpaths, patios and swimming pool surrounds. They use only quality products that have been specifically prepared for resin bond and bound surfaces. Resin “bound” surfaces consist of a natural stone aggregate encapsulated with resin and trowelled to a smooth durable finish whilst resin “bond” surfaces are created by natural aggregate spread over a bed of resin which produces a texture and appearance similar to loose gravel. Bespoke Resins Surfaces use stone, recycled glass and rubber in a wide range of colours and textures alongside top grade organic resin which is eco friendly. They specially select natural stone from a leading dried aggregate supplier for its grading and because it has been kiln dried to allow moisture to escape and they can create the perfect finish. Their permeable Resin Bound and Bond systems can be applied over existing surfaces such as concrete and Tarmac or onto a SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) compliant base which allows the water to seep through to the ground underneath the sub-base leaving the area puddle and flood free (resin bound only). Not only is resin practical, natural, eco friendly and compliant with the new SUDS regulations but it is also visually stunning adding a wow factor to your home creating a lasting impression whilst standing out from your neighbours. Come and see samples from the range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Glendining Parks & Drives At Glendining Parks & Drives they specialise in both resin bound and resin bonded surfaces ideal for a wide variety of applications. As both of these surfaces are aesthetically pleasing and customisable with a range of aggregates, they are popular for locations where their appearance is important. One of the most popular locations for their resin bound or resin bonded surface options are council-operated parks and green spaces in London where their resin paths have been a key feature of the landscape. Also urban and green-space tree pits where this resin bound aggregate system provides a surface which is attractive and highly porous , as the open matrix allows water to pass through , draining to planted areas or land drains. As Glendining carry out works for all the major house builders all of their surfaces are SuDs compliant, reducing the impact of urban development on flood risk and allowing water to flow into water courses. They are familiar with and use a wide variety of decorative aggregates and are more than happy to advise on the use of resin bonded or resin bound surfaces in your project. As resin surfaces require a good quality base to lay on, they can advise on any preparation works that will be necessary. Parks and green-spaces play an important role in the health and happiness of the local community, and at Glendining they continue to strive to make this a reality for all our towns and cities. Bituchem Bituchem has developed its leading Natratex product to create a new porous alternative to the popular asphalt material. Natratex Porous has been designed to replicate the natural infiltration methods of water and doing away with the need for conventional draining systems. The company has introduced Natratex Porous in response to the demand for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in commercial and domestic landscaping due to the prolonged periods of rainfall, whilst maintaining the natural aesthetics of the Natratex product laid on a porous receiving layer, the asphalt material with its open structure allows water to permeate through the surface and steadily absorb into the ground, following the natural process to a river or other water course, eliminating the likelihood of blocked drains and contamination of lakes and rivers from the build-up of waste or rain water. Natratex Porous is suitable for areas that see pedestrian and light vehicular use such as footpaths and recreational parks, and especially areas that are susceptible to flooding. Available in a range of colours, the colour co-ordinated aggregate and pigments combined with a clear binder provides a decorative yet durable hard landscaping surface. The application and maintenance of Natratex Porous is significantly easier than other infiltration or drainage systems due to the lack of deep earth work or additional drainage systems needed, reducing the overall time and cost of the project. Each application is assessed by Bituchem’s technical department to ensure that all of the requirements for the project are considered before supplying the material. Further information is available from the Bituchem stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Hooka offers Landscapers and Builders a unique machine for moving bulk materials, a lift and carry crawler. At only 1 metre wide, yet with a lift and carry capacity of 1.5 tonnes, the Hooka has been ‘size matched’ to hard landscaping materials including bulk bags, pallets of blocks, York stone etc. and gives unrivalled delivery performance into restricted access sites. Its rubber tracked base offers outstanding stability combined with ‘turn on the spot’ manoeuvrability without causing ground damage. Additionally, the Hooka makes light work of transporting / installing mature root-ball trees, outdoor sculptures, street furniture, etc. By eliminating barrowing and double handling of materials it significantly reduces the risk of manual handling injuries / claims, as well as providing huge savings on time and labour costs. It also allows waste materials to be stored around the site in bulk bags and moved to kerbside at ‘time of collection’ – removing the need for skips and the hassle of their planning permits. The Hooka’s unique technology enables it to transport materials safely whilst only weighing 1.8 tonnes itself! This means it can be transported easily to site by the HIAB truck at the same time as your material delivery, or towed behind a 4x4 on a standard plant trailer. Hooka has already won favour with the Canals Trust, as well as Kier construction and Vinci PLC. Come and see it for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Oxford Planters Oxford Planters have worked in collaboration with Andrew Fisher Tomlin to design and develop their exquisite new Stud Collection which is now a “Product of The Year” finalist for RHS Chelsea. The collection was designed after Andrew observed the wet weather contributing to an outbreak of slugs and snails in a number of his gardens. Using copper strips around planters is a traditional solution for discouraging slugs and snails but Andrew wanted something that was integrated into a stylish planter and furniture range. As well as designing the planter collection Andrew met with Oxford Planters’ craftsmen to discuss the very best timber to create a longlasting sustainable system. Accoya® & Medite®Tricoya®Extreme were chosen because the performance of both materials to outperform most natural hardwoods and which are 100% sustainable. Each piece of The Stud Collection is handcrafted to order in our Cotswolds joinery workshop. Come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Kingcombe Aquacare Kingcombe Aquacare have been designing, creating and maintaining water features of all types for nearly 30 years. Landmark projects include the Glasshouse Lake at RHS Wisley and the UK’s only public natural swimming pool at Kings Cross, London. Water play parks or ‘Splash Pads’ were a real feature of 2015 for Kingcombe Aquacare. They built 8 new parks in conjunction with Sun Safe Play in various locations open to the public around the UK. Every park has been a resounding success, and an investment that has proved to be a wise move. One client saw an increase of 40% in visitor numbers over a two month period following construction of their splash pad. 2016 is set to be the same with two orders already secured. The first project in Nottinghamshire is due to start in mid April with another soon after. Kingcombe/SSP splash pads are interesting, fun and of course safe for use. Children (and big children) absolutely love them and the range of interactive features available provide hours of fun. The water treatment systems are designed to ensure they fall in line with strict PWTAG recommendations. A straightforward and robust maintenance regime keeps the feature at its best year on year. Quickgrass It’s been a great year already so far, but the most exciting news from QuickGrass HQ for 2016 is that they have had a massive overhaul to their grass! Their Parkland, Stratford and Woburn styles are now even better than they were before, with more natural looking elements to their designs. They also have two brand new, luxury high end styles of grass, Marlborough and Cheltenham, which have an incredibly plush pile thickness! All of their grass styles incorporate differing shades of green and light brown as well as a mixture of straight and curly fibres for a natural look, and their installers love it! Their new soft touch Woburn grass was used by JS Garden Projects to create a visually interesting and stunning angular design garden for a family in Bowdon. Differing levels of architectural style planting were fused with colour and texture to create ‘grown up’ elements and beautiful visuals for Mum and Dad whilst allowing for safe spaces for the children to roam freely. Their gorgeous soft touch Woburn was the perfect ingredient for this family friendly and dual purpose garden, taking away the stress of gardening for the parents and at the same time giving a healthy and lush looking, soft and comfortable space to entertain, socialise, relax and play in, and at a competitive price too! Esthec® Terrace In a growing number locations around the world, architects are opting for the innovative, comfortable Esthec® Terrace system. This contemporary terrace system does more than embellish and enhance any space with its sense of luxury and functional features: with its freedom in colour choice, the architect can integrate it into any design scheme, indoors or out. Italian architect Daniele Lotti of Studio Lotti agrees. Through his architecture firm Studio Lotti, Daniele Lotti has been providing a wide range of services, from design to construction. He speaks highly of Esthec® Terrace and has used it lately in two prestigious residential projects in the Italian town of Livorno. Mr Lotti said: “We use Esthec® Terrace especially in our high-end projects, such as the prestigious beach apartment in Livorno. The lively colour nuances of Esthec® Terrace is an interesting choice. It is truly its own material, not an attempt to imitate wood. It’s also maintenance-friendly, durable and easy to install, all major benefits.” The other project for which Mr Lotti selected Esthec® Terrace is a residential building. “Because of the uniformity of material, I opted to use Esthec® Terrace here as well. Both the double whirlpool and the terrace have been fully finished with it. Even in wet conditions, the product had to stay beautiful, provide good grip and never look weathered. There’s no comparison between this product and other, non-composite materials.” Come and see how Esthec can help you by visiting their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
