Ebben Nurseries Landscape architects, urban planners, green contractors, arborists, students and other green specialists can find a huge amount of information about trees and their applications in an extensive tree tool: the TreeEbb. The digital tree platform has been developed by Ebben Nurseries and allows you to find the right tree quickly and easily for every green project based on specific wishes. The TreeEbb is a digital search tool for thousands of characteristic plant species; crucial for planting the right tree in the right location and creating as well as maintaining the desired final look. TreeEbb users can select not just on species but also on various characteristics. These include location, shape, a certain seasonal colour or geographic location, in connection with winter hardiness. The tool adjusts the search results to the selected requirements and whenever an extra characteristic is added, the range becomes more specific. On the extensive tree pages, the user can find detailed information and inspiring photos for each species. The information is arranged clearly by type, application, location, characteristics and plant properties. The TreeEbb is different to all other online tree-finding tools as it gives the exact width for each tree, a crucial piece of information for green designs. After all, in a street, the width of the tree is more important than the height. Winter hardiness zones and pH values are also indicated with exact figures. Host and food plants section has now been added, so users can put together an ecological planting plan for bees or owls, for example. Root systems and the seasonal colours (in an overview per month) are also being mapped out to be added as new sections. So the TreeEbb forms a digital tree library in which absolutely all relevant information can be found, unique thanks to the exact characteristics. Find out more on the Ebben Nurseries stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Perennial Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including all those working in or retired from landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough. Perennial saw another increase in the number of people it helped last year, continuing a general rising trend in client numbers since 2003. The biggest increase was seen in the number of people using the ‘advice only’ service, delivered by caseworkers and debt advisers usually by telephone. The almost 100% increase has prompted the charity to extend its monthly late night telephone advice service to weekly. Trained Caseworkers and Debt Advisers are now available to speak to by telephone every Wednesday from 12:00 noon – 8:30pm. Rising client numbers can, in part, be attributed to growing awareness, however, with an estimated 500,000 people working in the UK horticulture industry there is still some way to go before Perennial, and the free and confidential help it offers, is known by everyone. You can find out more about the work of Perennial in a series of new client films. Visit www.perennial.org.uk/films to hear clients talk about the help they received in their own words. The continuation of the charity’s work relies heavily on support from the horticulture trade and there are plenty of ways to get involved – from becoming a Perennial Partner to taking part in a fundraising challenge. Visit Perennial’s stand at the LANDSCAPE Show in September to find out how you can help.

Europlanters A new development project at the corner of Hanover Square and Oxford Street connects two properties that were previously separated by an internal courtyard. McLaren construction was appointed by Aviva Life & Pensions to completely demolish the existing office and retail buildings of 287 Oxford Street and 11-12 Hanover Square in Westminster to construct the new eight storey building producing a much larger space comprising of retail space and commercial offices the £2.4M new development, built over seven floors and basement, was designed by Campbell Architects. On the sixth floor where the building steps away from Oxford Street the space was developed into a large roof terrace which now overlooks the hustle and bustle of the shoppers below and across the city skyline. A second smaller terrace sitting on the seventh floor overlooks the larger green roof. Europlanters were involved in the design of the large terrace, working with McLaren and Campbell to create a secluded garden area made for the clients using the office space. The design included Corten clad GRP planters with Sapele timber floating seats and tables. LED lighting was added to create a relaxing ambiance and Sapele timber screening to frame the view of the city skyline. The project comprised of 21 metres of floating seating made from Sapele timber. An L’ shaped planter 11.4 Metres long /1500mm wide /1100mm high across the back with a further 9.2 Metres of the same dimensions down the right hand side. (Plan view) A large planting bed in the centre of the roof terrace with floating seating arranged to create three private spaces. The planter which is 3.2 Metres Long / 5.7Metres wide/ 1100mm high was made from GRP panelling to create one very large planter. 7 Metres of Sapele timber screening at 550mm high was then used as a wind break and to frame the skyline. LED lighting was also fitted to the planters and seating which lit up the garden creating a relaxing atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city below. Come and talk to Europlanters about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Step Change Design
Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell are garden designers. Their design and consultancy business, Step Change Design, helps designers and other outside space specialists to work cost effectively and successfully with care sector clients They’ve been on an eye-opening research journey into the care sector to answer a deceptively simple question, “Why aren’t care home gardens more actively used?” It was during their very first site visit to one of the 17 care homes in their study that they were presented with some serious home truths about attitudes as designers and this will form the centrepiece of their presentation at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show. The garden was quite scruffy: there were lots of weeds, sharp corners and bare patches in the borders. It was not a very impressive or well-looked after space, from their point of view, for residents living with dementia. What took place on that June afternoon, however, was a watershed moment for them. They saw a magical interaction take place between a resident and the activities manager who used what this modest garden already had (weeds and all) to create an authentic, engaging and skilful interaction that visibly lifted the mood of the resident. They realised that it wasn’t the garden design or the quality of the physical space that made this interaction meaningful. It was about the skills deployed by the person who accompanied the resident in the garden. The garden was typically domestic in feel and scale; there was a washing line in one area, bird feeders and some generationally-familiar plants like lavender, rosemary and wallflowers in another, but it didn’t seem to matter. Or rather, this was actually good enough. Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell are two of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen to their presentation to hear more about how this moment has informed their design practice, about their new approach to working with care settings that they call ‘RelationshipCentred Design’ and the ‘Hidden Dangers’ that designers can inadvertently create for our care setting clients. Anderton Concrete
Sugg Lighting Ltd Sugg Lighting was founded in 1837 and are one of the oldest gas lighting and flambeaux manufacturers in the UK. Working alongside top landscape designers they produce true living flame flambeaux units. Totally UK manufactured and approved for use in both public and private landscapes they can manufacture bespoke and portable units for every application. Sugg Lighting supply both mains and LPG gas variants with hard wired remote control ignition systems. We also are the only major manufacturer of gas lanterns too. Six Sugg Lighting 550mm diameter Bowl Flambeaux luminaries were supplied to the new Radisson SAS Hotel in Djerba, Tunisia to illuminate their new reflection pool. The project uses a combination of down lights and colour projectors to colour the water in conjunction with the gas flame units. This combination provides the flame movement that reflects in the water. The flambeaux are controlled via an electronic controller situated in a pump room below the restaurant decking. The units are switched individually for ease of operation, and provide a stunning illuminated addition to this modern restaurant area. Come and see examples from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
Anderton Concrete will be attending the LANDSCAPE Show for the third year in September and will once again be focusing on the outdoor environment. From DIY enthusiast to Landscape Designer the emphasis is always on the most cost effective method of creating an outdoor space that provides the optimum of space and simplicity of maintenance. Maximising space can be difficult, but by using one of the dry lay concrete block retaining wall options offered by Anderton this can be a relatively easy and cost effective method. Of the three products on offer, Slopeloc provides a very simple entry into the retaining wall market yet still providing an aesthetically pleasing solution. Unlike most walling products already available, Slopeloc leans back at an angle offering a more sympathetic and softer solution than other vertical walls. The system is simple to construct and requires minimal skill, ideal for the keen DIY enthusiast. Keystone is a larger format unit and builds near vertical walls and is available in two different face finishes, Split or Smooth. This product will retain greater loads due to its size and can be engineered to incorporate steps and curves. The final product on offer will be Stepoc, which is a more functional product using for engineered landscaping walls and swimming pool construction. The benefits of all of these products are the speed of construction and ultimately the cost savings. Come along to their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to find out more about the range of products on offer.

BCA Materiaux Anciens Thanks to their experience and extensive stocks of reclaimed French antique materials, BCA Antique Materials were approached by 6a Architects to supply for their project at Cambridge University. The architects Takeshi Hayatsu and Tom Emerson of 6a Architects were influenced by the brick, glass and wood facades of the architecture of the 20th century Churchill College campus.
Azpects Azpects reports that their leading scientists have developed a product that will give a uniform enhancement to faded Black Limestone.
The architectural objective was to achieve a contemporary interpretation, with a comparable esthetic, retaining a square footprint around a central courtyard. The landscaping features birch trees to create an informal garden, a natural and convivial space for the students.
Black Limestone is notorious for turning patchy grey, often just months after being laid, and it doesn’t look great. Whilst Azpects already have a Slate & Limestone Sealer Enhancer, due to the differing porosity of the stones surface, the enhancement can fall sort of the users expectations.
BCA’s export manager and designer David Ackers liaised closely with 6a architects and the Bedford contractors SDC, and detailed specifications were laid down for the series of overlapping reclaimed railway wagon boards in oak. The three floor levels of the new buildings are clad in these old oak boards in their natural untreated state, with half-lap profiles, thereby evoking the colour tone of the neighbouring brick-built buildings already on the Churchill College complex. Along the upper row of wagon board the architects specified a milled curved relief in each board to echo the subtly curved façades of the buildings, and each storey features a subtle inward curve and overhang.
For a deep, uniform finish and damage concealment use Back to Black. Back to Black Limestone revives faded, acid damaged and scratched Black Limestone and the one litre bottle will cover up to 30m². This unique formula also gives the surface a stain and water repellent finish, it’s ready to use and over-coatable.
This project has been nominated by The Guardian’s architecture specialist as one of the world’s top buildings of 2016. David Ackers and the BCA Matériaux Anciens team are proud to have contributed to the success of this project.
Back to Black Limestone has been added to the ‘Azpects’ EASYSeal Range, a formidable range of specialised quality sealers which are in stock and ready to order.
Come and talk to David on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
Back to Black Limestone enables landscapers and builders alike to give their customers a significantly cheaper option than ripping up an existing Black Limestone patio. Back to Black is easy to use and quickly applied producing instant and pleasing results.

Kate Gould
Kate Gould is designing one of the featured show gardens at this years’ RHS Chelsea Flower Show. “City Living” is a contemporary garden on several levels imagined in a typical urban apartment block. While these dwellings are often cold and slightly forbidding in appearance they could easily be transformed with the addition of attractive green outdoor spaces for residents use with comfortable and sheltered seating areas surrounded by appealing planting and tranquil water features. This garden could be added to existing buildings or easily inserted into new builds to effectively ‘green up’ city spaces and provide valuable habitat for wildlife and birds. The garden is set on three levels with a mezzanine floor and is positioned directly adjacent to the dwellings making use of the space beneath and alongside the building, providing an interesting and ‘green’ route to and from the resident’s homes. Green walls and a water feature are incorporated into the scheme to add a sense of tranquillity and movement. The hard landscaping will include sustainably sourced bamboo decking from Loknan , luxury decorative tiles and a specialist back lit concrete which will be particularly eye catching when the garden is lit in the evenings. Two Anglepoise® giant outdoor lamps will light up the garden while solid teak stools by Mark Gabbertas serve as stylish seating on the mezzanine. The idea of greening up city spaces is one that is close to Kate’s heart. She has explored this theme twice before at the RHS Chelsea Flower shows in 2009 and 2013 receiving highly coveted Gold medals on both occasions as well as a ‘Best in Category’ for her 2009 ECO Chic Garden Kate Gould is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Lumena Lighting Lumena are looking forward to exhibiting in Battersea again this year, where many exciting new products will be showcased.
Isabel Coulton Isabel Coulton is delighted to showcase her new project ‘Sentinels’ at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. Inspired by the ancient crosses that traverse Dartmoor, they are a celebration of light, colour and geometry juxtaposed with natural form found in gardens and parkland. Primary colours red, blue and yellow when they come together in light produce white, symbol of harmony and peace. Rising silently like the standing stones of old, they emanate peace. Made from the Monterey cypress; a wood that is rot and bug resistant and keeps it’s colour when oiled, these unique pieces incorporate coloured glass with a specially designed cast iron base which keeps them upright in the strongest of gales. The warm glow the wood lends to any space is usually a part of Coulton’s work. Unless working in stone, she appreciates the wealth of colours and shapes found in wood. The organic mixture of elemental and sustainable materials is an important part of this project and is always considered in Coulton’s art.
Exclusive to Lumena is the revolutionary ‘Ultra-Spikelight 360’, quite possibly the most versatile garden spikelight ever seen. The concept was created in house by Lumena, and is now a registered UK design. This simple, robust design enables up to 4 spot lights to be attached to a single pole via a unique screw-on wheel system that allows easy angle adjustment of each light. Once fixed to the wheel from above or below, each spotlight can be adjusted to shine up or down in any direction using the new strengthened ‘swivel’ neck joint that adjusts via a serrated clamp. The benefits of this are fantastic, as low planting can be highlighted at the same time as up-lighting smaller trees or garden statues. Alternatively, all spotlights can shine in the same direction to create a stronger light beam if preferred. The ‘Ultra Spikelight 360’ is available in 240v and 12v in several different finishes including Natural Copper, Matt Black and elegant new ‘Rustic Brown’ aluminium. For the latest in garden lighting products please visit the Lumena stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
“I find the dialogue between the customer and myself an exciting process, and produce strong, eye-catching and unique pieces when I have the inspiration of problem solving for specific environments and tastes.” Coulton’s sculpture can grace the home, corporate building or garden. Her love for her work means standards are high, deadlines are met and communication is clear and constant, leaving no room for worry. Come and see examples of other works at her stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. @landscapeevent #Landscape2017 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Ebb & Flow For a recent project that Ebb & Flow worked on, their client had an idea to bring a little of the outside into the inside of a play barn. So they created tiers of trays to hang from the roof, with lines of raindrops which children can walk between on stopping stones below. The intention of the whole visitor centre (Williams Den near Hull) is reconnection with nature, so they wanted to make the rain interactive. By chance they found that waves in the trays created swaying in the raindrops in a wonderful way. With the help of ingenious fabrications they have wave generating flaps operated by levers and cables. As far as they know there is nowhere else where one can play with freefalling rain. This could make weather forecasting even more difficult for the Hull area… At Ebb & Flow they would be happy to make playful rain in other arid regions, inside or outside. If you know of one please get in touch. Come and talk to Simon on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Star Uretech Star Uretech have become the first resin bound/bonded manufacturer to receive accreditation from The Living Wage Foundation.
Chic Teak Luxury Furniture Chelsea Gold Medallist and judge Michael Balston designed the beautiful and tranquil gardens at the five star Grove Hotel in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Set in 300 acres, Michael Balston designed a formal seating area around some garden sculptures. Rather than deploy a conventional teak garden bench, he chose to include five Cheverell benches from Chic Teak to go around the perimeter of the circular paved area. These benches were originally designed by Michael Balston himself, who also commissioned Chic Teak to make them to his specific drawings. Being modular in design, these benches can be made to order dependent on the size required, from two to seven seater. The delightfully ornate high-backed Cheverell bench with its gently sloping top, decorative finials, ornate legs and softly curved seat is expected to be very popular in the hotels grounds, which attract visitors from all around the world. The Grove hotel also includes a luxury golf resort, a health spa resort and some of the most beautiful gardens just outside the M25. Come and talk to Chic Teak about your furniture requirements on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Star Uretech, regardless of whether they are permanent employees or third-party contractors; receive a minimum hourly wage of £8.45 - significantly higher than the national minimum wage of £6.95 and the new minimum wage premium for over 25s of £7.20 per hour introduced this April. Mark Almond, General Manager at Star Uretech says “As a company our ethos differs from what has become standard practice and paying our staff a decent wage for a hard day’s work is just one of the changes we have made to how Star Uretech operates. We place great importance on the wellbeing of our staff, our honesty regarding our products and a general desire to do the right thing. Morals and profit are not mutually exclusive and our ethical approach to business not only helps us to retain our customers but is playing a large role in securing new customers and helping our business grow. We have always been a market leader in our industry and hopefully other companies will continue to follow our lead and make the living wage commitment.” Living Wage Foundation Director, Katherine Chapman said: “We are delighted to welcome Star Uretech to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer. The best employers are voluntarily signing up to pay the Living Wage now. The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day’s work with a fair day’s pay.” Star Uretech are exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park.

Hook Up Solutions Hooka offers landscapers and builders a unique machine for moving bulk materials. At only 1 metre wide, yet with a lift and carry capacity of 1.5 tonnes, the Hooka has been ‘size matched’ to hard landscaping materials including bulk bags, pallets of blocks, York stone etc. and gives unrivalled delivery performance into restricted access sites. Its rubber tracked base offers outstanding stability combined with ‘turn on the spot’ manoeuvrability without causing ground damage. Additionally, the Hooka makes light work of transporting / installing mature root-ball trees, outdoor sculptures, street furniture, etc. By eliminating barrowing and double handling of materials it significantly reduces the risk of manual handling injuries / claims, as well as providing huge savings on time and labour costs. It also allows waste materials to be stored around the site in bulk bags and moved to kerbside at ‘time of collection’ – removing the need for skips and the hassle of their planning permits. The Hooka’s unique technology enables it to transport materials safely whilst only weighing 1.8 tonnes itself! This means it can be transported easily to site by the HIAB truck at the same time as your material delivery, or towed behind a 4x4 on a standard plant trailer. Hooka has already won favour with the Canals Trust, as well as Kier construction and Vinci PLC. To view the latest case studies, which give an idea of her capabilities and versatility, visit the Hooka stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Carolyn Willitts
Carolyn Willitts is a landscape architect and garden designer with a passion for creating bold and thoughtful landscapes and celebrating creative outdoor places. She originally trained as a professional theatre designer and worked in theatre for eight years, an experience that brings a unique and creative approach to her designs. Founded in 2012 by Carolyn, CW Studio recently designed the landscape for Moneypenny’s new £15m headquarters in Wrexham. Set in a ten-acre landscape, the striking new building has its own “village pub”, a tree house for meetings and dramatic views over meadows, orchard, woodland and the countryside beyond, all designed to create a happy, relaxing and inspirational setting for employees and visitors. Employees and visitors enter along a blue Irish limestone walkway through a landscape of tall, swaying grasses, echoing the natural landscape of the meadow beyond. Hornbeam hedging gives structure and defines the space. A timber deck leads to a wetland filled with filtered surface water, while a wet meadow detention basin holds any overflow in severe weather. An orchard provides apples, damsons, plums and black cherries for the staff to enjoy. All species were chosen to provide fruit for the staff to enjoy throughout their working day. Carolyn Willitts, Director of CW Studio said, “Moneypenny have been the perfect client and it is so wonderful to see the staff enjoying their new home. There are even picnic baskets and blankets so that people can sit in the meadow at lunchtime and eat apples from the trees. It’s no wonder they recently came 4th in the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for”. Carolyn is one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. Trans European Stone Nestled in Covent Garden’s Conservation Area, Mercer’s Yard looks vibrant after it’s £22m makeover. Designed by Ian Ritchie Architects, the development provides restaurant and retail space at the ground and basement levels, with 24 residential apartments on the upper floors. On site restrictions within Covent Garden’s Conservation Area, meant that both stone storage and deliveries were a concern. To comply with the Conservation Area’s vehicular restrictions Trans-European Stone arranged for the Belgian Blue to be offloaded at a temporary storage facility in Kent. Once in the UK, the stone was then re-loaded onto the smaller vehicles and with 48 hours’ notice from the stone contractor Maylim’s site manager, delivered to site. The process worked remarkably well; in total 13 articulated 24 tonne trucks were despatched from Belgium, and 29 rigid 12 tonne vehicles made early morning deliveries to site. The finished chequerboard design looks incredible and three eye-catching benches with an untreated, rustic quarry face complete the design. Jérôme Berteloot of Ian Ritchie Architects Ltd said “We have specified Belgian Blue on previous projects because we enjoy the subtlety of its colours, natural variations (fossils) and the wide range of finishes available. The setts and slabs provided were of the highest quality in terms of dimensional accuracy and of consistency of finish”. For more information on the range please visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. @landscapeevent #Landscape2017 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Shoot At Shoot they have been listening to their professional members and have recently launched a new and improved garden care calendar. Shoot automatically suggests the best horticultural practice for each plant you add to a Shoot garden profile. For example, they know which pruning group your clematis or rose is in just based on the plant name you add to your list. This saves you time at the garden handover phase and can be passed on to clients or to a garden maintenance teams to ensure the proper development of each client garden. The new and improved care calendar also now has a new modern design and larger font sizes. You can toggle between a plant view and task view and you can now easily jump to any calendar month. The care calendar also comes along with your logo so you stay front of mind with your clients. For any care task you can read more detail and see the plant images for the plants the tasks relate to. As a professional member of Shoot you also get extra care calendar edit permissions, which allows you to edit the standard care advice to get it exactly right for each garden. You can hide suggested tasks and you can also add your own new ones. This can be helpful if you have a particular aesthetic you are looking to achieve, for example, ‘prune box balls into spheres’. Or you may wish to pass on specific guidance to garden maintenance teams such as ‘do not to sweep up leaves’ in a naturalised woodland garden. Come and talk to the Shoot team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Proludic At Proludic they always ask “What is our starting point when designing play spaces? The brief, the budget, the environment, the child? In reality these factors will all have an influence but how should we prioritise them?” In truth, they cannot sit in isolation and to achieve the best outcome we need to be mindful of who we are designing for. We should seek outcomes from play that will support the intrinsic needs of a child; to sustain their development throughout their childhood years and provide differing play experiences which are age appropriate and use a wide range of sensory materials. Our aspirations cannot always be met because the spaces given over to play are not the utopian environments from yesteryear. 21st century living has irrevocably changed that but let us not lament. Proludic’s offer to children today is still imaginative, innovative, challenging, engaging and inclusive with play equipment design that will inspire children to play across a spectrum of age and ability. Proludic have redesigned Kanope in 2017 and have taken the key elements of nature and created a modern twist incorporating an urban interpretation of nature. Contemporary design has been created through geometrical shape, transparency, discovery and imagery using urban materials such as steel, ropes and composite to provide a robustness to sit within any challenging environment. Play is far from compromised, in fact it is enhanced by a footprint for play that delivers a plethora of play opportunities and an aesthetic that upholds the aspiration of Genius Loci – ‘the prevailing character or atmosphere of a place’ and a great place for children to play. Come and talk to the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
