Scaffa Home Garden Furniture Scaffa Home Garden Furniture started life in 2012. A great approach to supporting the circular economy as well as meeting the needs of discerning customers, Scaffa uses reclaimed scaffolding planks as raw materials. The planks are sanded four times along their journey to becoming stylish new furniture items, and are ultimately treated with an environmentally friendly colour wash to give them a distinct yet natural look as well as a protective layer. All items are designed in-house and handmade to order. A Scaffa piece is equally at home in the back garden, as it is inside a home or office environment as it is in a pub garden or park. Scaffa customers range from individual home owners to large scale corporate clients all looking for something that little bit different to grace their homes or places of work.

Benjamin Pope “It’s August in the garden, three days of grey cloud and rain followed by bright sun with temperatures almost reaching thirty degrees, what could be more English! Unlike people, the plants seem to be really enjoying the rain and the garden is bursting with flowers and produce. Both soil and air temperatures have reached an optimum level promoting the growth and ripening of fruit; whilst the shortening day length had kick started all the late season performers. A time of abundance, when harvesting is high on the agenda. The brasicas are coming on steady, as are the leeks and many root vegetables. Cucurbits, tomatoes, legumes and salad leaves are all in abundance. The last of the gooseberries and currants have been picked and the blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are in full swing. Soon to follow will be the grapes, apples, plums and pears. The garden takes on a softer aesthetic, herbaceous borders overflow whilst hedges become fluffy. Trimming, clipping, deadheading and cutting back are all that is required to ensure the display continues and the garden looks its best. As well as being a time to enjoy, it’s a time to plan and prepare. Autumn maintenance and the planting season will soon be here, so seek out suppliers of trees, fruit, hedging and bulbs. What better way to spend an afternoon than in the garden, thumbing through some plant catalogues with a nice brew?” Benjamin Pope is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

Air Garden Air Garden helped with the regeneration of the Market Square in Palencia. Ricardo Carracedo, project architect and project manager of Works on the Market Square of Palencia said: “The projected intervention, away from the sad devastation caused by historical falsifications, takes place under a contemporary language, bordering on the minimalism, mute faced with the symbolism and the presence of both buildings – the Market Square and the Council Palace-. This new urban scenario is conceived as a revitalizing and articulating element that will deal in a flexible and reserved way with our cultural heritage, which recovers and renews as a source of profit and enjoyment” “I’m happy because we have carried the project out as we thought” The Market Square “gets rid of its unfortunate additions, the outdoor marquee is removed and this new space is recovered for the city being colonized by two simple elements which as kind of ‘glass boxes’ are arranged symmetrically, ruling over the immediate environment. A slender canopy, more or less closed according to the needs or seasons, provides continuity of the whole while defines and differentiates the outdoor spaces, enabling multitude of uses to his shelter. The intervention reaches its highest point by means of the placement of two green axes which, acting like carpets of greenery (a vertical one and a horizontal one), soften and transform a highly degraded area on the minds of the people of Palencia.” Air Garden would love to talk to you about the project, come and talk to them about it on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BALI Following the success of the BALI Pavilion at last year’s Landscape Show, BALI is delighted to support the following BALI members who will be exhibiting on the pavilion this year: · Composite Wood Company, suppliers of composite decking, fencing and railings; · Designscape UK, Surrey-based landscape contractors; · Gordon Low Products, manufacturers of pond liners and suppliers of EPDM geo-membrane sheets; · Johnsons Wellfield Quarries, producers of natural Yorkstone quarry products. BALI Affiliate members are companies that supply products and services to the landscape industry. Add to that timely deliveries of quality materials it makes sense to look for the BALI Registered logo when you specify materials for your landscape project. And for garden and landscape designers who want the reassurance of working with a professional landscaper who will work alongside them to realise their design, look for the BALI Registered logo – it represents, quality, expertise, accountability and peace of mind. Kebony A distinctive Edwardian home in north Aberdeenshire was recently given a new lease of life with the addition of an extension inspired by contemporary minimal design. The extension features Kebony cladding which introduces an element of Scandinavian design aesthetic as well as bringing with it all the benefits of resilience and durability that its technology allows. The owners were taken by the beauty and durability of Kebony which acquires an attractive grey patina over time. A sustainable alternative to tropical timber, Kebony is treated with a natural alcohol under conditions of heat and pressure to ensure structural stability and robustness even in exposed coastal locations. HRI Architects first discovered Kebony when it was sourcing timber for the new Forestry Commission offices in Inverness. Local, sustainably-grown Scots Pine was treated with Kebony and used for the project with great success.

20

@landscapeevent #Landscape2015 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Mark Williams of HRI architects in Inverness said: “Buildings are exposed to extreme weather here in Scotland, so materials need to stand up to the forces of the intemperate climate and the test of time. We discovered a number of years ago that you can successfully use timber cladding in Scotland but only if it is carefully considered in terms of material selection and detailing. We use Kebony in many projects; it is ‘pickled’ with a natural alcohol that gives it the robustness required for the often challenging Scottish climate.” Come and visit the Kebony stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and see the range for yourself.

Gardeners Guild At The Gardeners Guild we regularly receive calls or emails from the public asking how much a gardener should charge. They typically hope to find a qualified and reliable gardener for around £10 per hour. Qualified gardeners typically charge between £15-£30 per hour. By charging the right amount, they are able to cover their expenses and overheads. This means that they stay in business. This means that they are reliable year after year. But there is more to a professional gardener than qualifications alone. At The Gardeners Guild we help our members with legal contracts, letter templates, advice lines and research. We also help our members stay up-to-date with changes in relevant legislation. This year has already seen changes announced to: - Customer cancellation rights - Dispute resolution - Pesticides rules - Consumer rights Our contract template, complaints procedure templates and other documents help members, not only be aware of the changes, but also how to comply with them. If you would like to increase your professionalism by keeping up-to-date with changes in trading legislation, come and talk to us at LANDSCAPE 2015! We will be happy to discuss the changes and answer any questions you may have. We will also be happy to talk to you about business insurance, online marketing and any other concerns you may have about providing a garden maintenance service.

Two brand new shades, ‘taupe’ and ‘cream’ were the inspiration for the Schellevis Dutch Chocolate garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. Award winning garden and landscape designer Carien van Boxtel took the opportunity to reference the work of landscape artist Louis le Roy in her design: He stacked used pavers without cement in his masterpiece De Ecokathedraal, allowing plants to grow freely and creating a perfect marriage between manmade and natural material. Exquisite planting at Chelsea in caramel, cream and brown shades with accents in bright orange matched the warm chocolate colours of the paving perfectly and some of the flowers even smelled of cocoa, giving the garden a truly mouth-watering look and feel! It proved a hit, catching the eye of garden writer Sarah Raven and described as ‘My find of the show’ by Dan Martyr of Node Urban Design. Contemporary and timeless style is combined with optimum low maintenance, non – slip performance and environmentally friendly credentials, being made from natural, recyclable material. Schellevis paving is shortlisted for the Society of Garden Designers Product of the Year Award this year. Come and see their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Wendy Perring Forest Lodge is a new home with a difference. The clients, who had been living in a static caravan for 15 years on their stunning five acre property in the New Forest National Park, wished for a new, low energy dwelling, flooded with light and with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape: Importantly, the new dwelling should not resemble or feel like a mobile home, but also had to comply with the 1968 Caravan Act. PAD studio’s approach to design is deeply rooted in place. This particular site, located at the edge of a clearing in the heart of the New Forest is accessed from a long gravel track that slowly revealed views of the existing property. This progression through the landscape became a generating idea for the new home which continues the journey, inviting nature into the home through carefully placed window openings. These large apertures focus and frame the stunning views, displaying them internally as if paintings on large canvases. Internally, the material pallet is restrained and natural with oak, limestone and white panelled walls. This deliberately muted array of materials provides a neutral backdrop onto which is painted by the forest’s changing light and rendered by the colour of the landscape beyond the building. PAD studio has exceeded the client’s aspiration for a low energy house by designing this building to meet the rigorous PassivHaus standard. The architects also designed the landscaping surrounding the house. It is difficult to imagine that this ‘mobile home’ was prefabricated, built away from site and craned into position in two separate pieces. Forest Lodge is an excellent example of what can be achieved through imagination, innovation and careful consideration. Wendy Perring from PAD Design is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park. Come along in September and listen to her.

Perennial Historian, writer and garden designer Sir Roy Strong, has agreed to bequeath The Laskett Gardens to Perennial. The Laskett Gardens, which cover some four acres, have been described as the largest formal gardens to be created in England since 1945. Dougal Phillip, Chair of Perennial’s Board of Trustees, says, “We are delighted to have been offered the opportunity to carry out Sir Roy’s wishes to preserve the integrity of his outstanding garden for future generations.” Sir Roy Strong and his late wife, the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman purchased the house and the undeveloped four acre site in Herefordshire in 1973. Inspired by the great gardens before 1914 such as Hidcote, by those of baroque Italy and of Tudor and Stuart England, they embarked on designing and planting the incredible garden visible today. This is a garden of rooms underpinned by dramatic vistas and elements of surprise which draw the visitor through the terrain, which uniquely abounds with autobiographical and historical references. Speaking about his decision to leave his Gardens to Perennial, Sir Roy says, “It is no secret that the creation of the Gardens was a shared passion with my late wife and that they will remain a monument to a marriage. Now that we have opened to the public that passion is shared with the thousands of visitors each year which we welcome. I am heartened that that will continue and also that the Gardens will continue to change and develop in the future. I see it not only as a bequest to Perennial but also to the county of Herefordshire.” The garden will be left to Perennial with a generous endowment to ensure its maintenance for years to come. The charity will continue to open the garden to visitors for periods of the year, as it does its two other open gardens, York Gate near Leeds and Fullers Mill Garden in Suffolk.

QuickGrass Show homes without question need to exude quality, promise and warmth, something to make the buyer feel as though they could potentially be standing in their brand new home. Interior design is a fundamental part of the buying and selling process; nobody wants to take on a renovation project, but what about the exterior of the home? Most people dream of a beautiful and spacious garden, but can be put off by the idea of constant maintenance and upkeep. That’s why Pentland Homes in Scholars Green, Folkestone, decided to have stunning artificial grass from Quickgrass installed in their gorgeous show home. The builders of the show home at Pentland Homes wanted a clean, streamlined garden that would be easy to maintain, while still looking realistic and be soft and natural underfoot.

The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) exists to promote excellence in garden design and their members are committed to providing you with the best service. Each registered member of the SGD has undertaken a rigorous adjudication process, adheres to a professional code of conduct and is experienced in delivering gardens of the highest quality. This year the SGD are wholeheartedly supporting LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park. They will be welcoming existing and new members to talk to them on their stand and are also holding their Product Of The Year competition at the event. The finalists of which will be displayed actually at the show alongside their stand. The winner will be chosen at the show itself. For more information about the benefits of membership please speak to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Quickgrass carries many great quality artificial grass systems, the higher end style being the Woburn Soft Touch. The pile thickness of this particular artificial grass makes it incredibly luxurious, oozing quality and comfort. Twenty square meters of Woburn Soft Touch artificial grass was installed at the show home in Scholars Green by a Quickgrass approved installer, Newbuild Landscapes. It looks absolutely just like natural grass, and what’s more, the grass is completely UV stable, enabling the colour to remain fresh and vibrant all year long. Woburn Soft Touch artificial grass is available exclusively from Quickgrass, and with landscape gardeners, designers and contractors recommending the use of Quickgrass when the use of artificial grass is specified, you can rest assured that the quality is second to none. Come and see the range for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Tim Gosling Tim Gosling is always delighted when a client’s brief is to design a piece of furniture or a room, which harmoniously blends the interior with the exterior. Over the years there have been many fashions for interiors but it is perhaps Chinoiserie that lends itself so beautifully to both the gardener and the interior architect. There is always much evidence of our love with Chinoisierie at flower and garden shows and it is there to be enjoyed in countless stunning landscaped gardens all around the UK. A fine example is The Chinese House in Stowe, a beautifully crafted wooden structure with Chinese letters, flowers and animals. It is thought to have been designed by William Kent in 1738 and is a landmark in the rising fashion for Chinoiserie at the time.

30

@landscapeevent #Landscape2015 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Earlier this year Tim Gosling was commissioned to design a mirror for a client wishing to have a piece that would reflect a much loved Chinese style red garden bench and garden. Tim started by doing incredibly detailed hand drawings, which enabled the client to get a wonderful visual impression. This was then sent to the workshop, where highly skilled craftsmen spent 8 months hand carving the pine frame and creating further fullscale hand drawings. The mirror was then gessod before being hand carved again to create the depth of work in the gesso before guilding. Tim’s inspiration came from the 1790’s and includes the mystical birds, the Ho Ho bird which is so popular in Chinoiserie and comes from the mythical Japanese version of the phoenix. To make the Ho Ho birds seem less harsh and crow like a pearl was carved in each of their beaks opening up the Jaw line and making them almost smile. Tim Gosling is one of this years featured speakers at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

Rigby Taylor One of Rigby Taylor’s success stories in the past two years has been the promotion of EuroFlor urban flower meadows and soon we will see the launch of two EuroFlor Discovery Boxes containing popular mixtures from the range. Purchasers can sow the seed mixtures to try out different colour collections, growth habits and flowering periods before deciding which ones suit the particular areas. Many of these mixtures are RHS ‘Perfect for Pollinators’ species. EuroFlor sowings are economical, save money and have a positive public impact. Perfect for eye-catching displays along roadsides, at roundabouts, community gardens, central reservations, parkland features, in fact anywhere where a visual impact can be achieved. The Autumn Discovery Box contains five flower mixtures sown through September and October and can be under-planted with a selection of FloraNative spring flowering bulbs. The Spring Discover box contains ten flower mixtures that should be sown from March to Early June. Flowering will continue throughput the summer to the early frosts. The sowings of these urban flower seeds has been to much acclaim from councils, clubs and organisations who have benefited from their colourful impact and financial savings when compared to plug plantings. In Gloucester, Paul Sutlow, senior grounds maintenance supervisor for Amey, and his team, working in partnership with Gloucester City Council and Gloucester City Homes, have designed a fabulous garden for the public to enjoy. Paul commented, “We’ve had unprecedented numbers of comments about our various urban meadow plantings. EuroFlor urban flower mixes are low maintenance and have multiple wildlife benefits.” Come and talk to Rigby Taylor on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

M-Tec M-tec is an architectural metalwork specialist with over 35 years’ of stainless steel fabrication expertise. Working closely with artists and architects, the fabrication experts manufacture a range of innovative public art products such as sculptures, canopies and bespoke architectural metalwork pieces in-house. m-tec were recently chosen by public artist Jephson Robb to manufacture two eyecatching sculptures which have now taken pride of place outside Gartnavel Royal Hospital in Glasgow. The monuments reflect the experiences and stories of those using the hospital’s mental health services. The Sun-Moon sculpture is made up of a two and a half metre convex diameter circle with two different sides to represent the contrast between the Sun and the Moon. It draws its inspiration from the hospital motto ‘Let there be Light Again’. One blasted stainless steel side features highly polished dished sections to reflect the shape of the Moon, and the opposite side is made of a highly reflective, polished mirror to represent the Sun. The second sculpture, Two Hearts, was fabricated using 316 grade stainless steel. The four metre mirror-polished reflective platform supports the powder coated Two Hearts figure. This particular project is the latest in a number of high-profile architectural metalwork sculptures manufactured by m-tec, which stand as impressive pieces of public art in towns and cities across the world. Please stop by stand F71 at the LANDSCAPE Show to discuss how m-tec can bring your stainless steel project to life.

South West Play In collaboration with Erect Architecture and Wayward Plants South West Play are pleased to present the first glimpses of the Cloud Kingdom at Torriano Junior School.

The Firepit Company Following the highly successful launch of The Firepit Company in 2013 they have gone from strength to strength creating over 600 fireballs for customers, the vast majority of which have been bespoke designs. They work closely with Garden Designers and Landscapers to achieve a Fireball design that is individually tailored to their clients interests and highly complimentary to the design scheme. In July 2015 they were asked to create a center piece for a prime time garden makeover show called ‘Love Your Garden’ on ITV with Alan Titchmarsh. They have continued to create new and exciting designs for people to choose from if they do not desire a bespoke design, in the last few months they have developed several new themes including an Equestrian themed design, an Oriental Dragon design and also a Country Pursuits design.

The Camden Active Spaces project provides more active community spaces by upgrading school playgrounds and opening then to the community outside school hours. It is a preventative healthcare initiative. This project was very challenging, as challenging as you’d expect when tasked with making a Cloud like structure out of rope! It demanded all of their combined expertise and using commercial play grade rope and their portable press, they have achieved what they once presumed was the impossible - Cloud Kingdom, a cloud made from rope. The structure is so impressive that the children of Torriano Junior School could not wait to get the chance to climb, crawl and balance about in the new active space. After having patiently waited throughout the term watching it evolve, we are sure that the both the children and staff will now take full advantage! When is it my turn next? Why not come along and talk to South West Play about this project and yours on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Country Pursuits Fireball has been their most popular theme in summer 2015, long may it continue to be popular! Come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Terrazza MC Terrazza MC has developed the TMC Terrace Cleaner. The solution will clean any surface just using water. Without pesticides or chemicals the TMC will clean the surface as well as the joints of the terrace or drive way. Unique in the fact that TMC combines the solution to two problems that keep the gardener or landscaper puzzled these days: weed control and cleaning/ renewal of hard surfaces in the garden. A lot of private and public buildings have lovely gardens that combine green parcels with hard surfaces that come in a big variety of material types. Some have chosen wooden decking, natural stone, concrete or pavers, and sometimes composite materials or rubber and even metal are used. All these materials are under attack from invading mosses, algae and weeds. Gardeners and landscapers are often asked to the rescue or are expected to maintain these surfaces. However there are no solutions to the market that fulfill the need of the professional. Now the Terrazza Terrace Cleaner brings the answer to the market. Being introduced for the first time last year the solution has found a place in the equipment set of the professional gardener in many countries. Now at LANDSCAPE the system will be introduced to the UK garden and landscape market. The solution has been awarded with 3 worldwide patents. The technology is compressed in a very special brushing system that cleans the surface and the joints while it polishes the surface bringing the original colors back to life. The joints are cleaned and weeds are removed without any damage!! Come and see it for yourself at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bathgate Horticulture At Bathgate they have noticed a significant increase in demand for their Urban & Structural Tree Soil thanks to the upturn in the economy and the long awaited start of several urban projects. The tree soil is designed to withstand compaction in urban planted locations such as paved areas, pedestrian walk ways, traffic access routes, concrete planting pits, green areas, roof top planting, and roundabouts etc. The new installation of our bespoke mixing plant now enables them to incorporate additional products to enhance performance and can be tailored to suit individual requirements and varying growing environments. Products such as long term controlled release fertilizers can be very beneficial, providing essential nutrition to assist in the establishment of freshly planted trees and shrubs. Bathgate can also offer ph. amendments to accommodate specific plant tolerances. The product is available in 50 litre sacks, bulk bags or loose bulk and can be supplied nationwide from a single pallets to full loads. Fitrite Fencing & Decking Fitrite’s new range of lighting is perfect for any environment. Whether it’s around your garden or a park home, this unique system enables you to fit it without the need and cost of an electrician. From deck lights to spot lights, Festoon or colour changing LED lighting, all your needs are covered. Easy Connect is also the only system on the market that doesn’t use a transformer, which allows additional benefits such as distance and the number of lights you can add onto the system. Fitrite’s, Easy Connect expert Antony Kirk shares his top fitting tips: “Always make sure you have enough fittings and cables, once you start a project things always tend to change, but the great thing about Easy Connect is it allows you to make changes at any stage, creating less time and headaches for everyone involved. Any issues with where it is placed, just disconnect a cable and put another one in, it’s that simple. Also, you don’t have to use it on decking, this product allows you to be creative, I have customers who have put it into stone walls and used it for the kids outdoor play areas. This lighting doesn’t just have to be your standard outdoor lighting. The festoon lighting is popular with weddings and outdoor venues as there’s no issue of the British summer rain ruining the lighting and is easily adjustable if more or less is needed, quickly and easily”. Helen Elks-Smith designed the innovative Reflecting Photonics Garden, based on this years light theme. Helen paid excellent attention to detail and beautifully portrayed the affect of light splitting. The array of plants display a full spectrum of colour and have been planted in a way that they reflect refracted light. White plants can be seen at the beginning of the garden slowly transitioning into a rainbow of colour, when passing the awe inspiring, light filled, pavilion. Each individual panel within the pavilion was carefully selected and placed so that they either reflect colour onto the garden or mirrors parts of the garden, depending on the position of the sun at specific moments in time. Helen used CED’s White Marble Aggregate and Cedagravel to create a white meandering path. At each bend in the path a rainbow of SureSet was added, to illustrate the spectrum seen when light refracts or is caused to bend. The garden was built by Turf ‘n’ Earth and deservedly received a Gold Award as well as the People’s Choice Award. Helen said: “We have used CED products for many of our client’s gardens to great success and indeed in my own garden, but this is the first time we used them for a show garden. From initial conversations to completed works everything was very smooth and straightforward. CED delivered everything as discussed – which is exactly what is needed for all projects and show gardens even more so!” CED are always proud to be involved in the RHS Flower Shows and look forward to next year where we hope to be given the opportunity to be involved once again. We would like to wish Helen, Tamara and Ben the best of luck in their future endeavours and hope to work with them again in the near future. Come and talk to CED about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Greenwall.pro A countryside kindergarten is the site of the latest and loveliest project from Greenwall. pro.. According to the concept, the wall was designed to be as colourful as possible. It consists of 30 modules and even in that small case automatic irrigation system with pipeline in two rows is included that ensures the necessary amount of water and nutrients. Greenwall.pro designed a nice carriage box – looks like a treasure box – that hides the dosing pumps and the input part of the irrigation system. All the plants were selected with special carefulness as Greenwall.pro are keen on doing their very best even on a mini-scale. The modules were carried fully planted to the spot. The planting process and the construction of the wall lasted altogether a little bit more than three working days. The cheerful atmosphere of the greenwall will surely make the life of the children and their nursery governess happier. Come and talk to Greenwall.pro about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Platipus Anchors Platipus Anchors, the leading manufacturer of tree anchoring systems for over 30 years, has recently enhanced the work of Landscape Architect David Sarton on the Woodland Garden project. This garden is the final part of a 15-year project to transform a watermill and to create from A to Z a serene garden to offer moments of tranquillity. 73 mature trees were planted using the Platipus Rootball Fixing System with Plati-Mat. This system is the preferred method for supporting trees underground and consists of driving three anchors into the ground, and setting them into their working position. The Plati-Mat is the protection placed on top of the rootball to help secure and protect newly transplanted trees. The system naturally degrades to release the rootball after three to five years and creates an aesthetically pleasing finish to the landscape. The Platipus Piddler irrigation and aeration system was also used to deliver water and air evenly and laterally around the rootball. David Sarton, the Landscape Architect said “This was the best option for the trees as 150 or so visible stakes would have spoilt the overall look of the garden. Come and talk to Platipus about your project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Lumena Lights Lumena have been concentrating on developing new copper and brass outdoor and garden lighting. They love Copper as in its pure state it has a very bright attractive finish but when exposed to an outside environment quickly changes colour to a darker variegated shade which integrates well with the garden background. Some people love the original shiny finish. To retain this finish they recommend using a clear, acrylic spray lacquer which is easy to obtain; Lumena stock this also. If it has already weathered then it’s easy to revert to the original bright finish by using “Brasso” or similar. Vinegar can also work really well, with the added bonus that most homes will have it in their kitchen cupboard. Lumena have a beautiful traditional style copper wall light called the Swanage, which, in their opinion, is one of the most attractive lights in their range. Alongside this, a brand new Copper Twin Spike Light (the Smartspike 260) is a real stunner. Each spotlight head can be directed individually at any angle, up or down. Both 12v and mains 240v options are available which are supplied with an extra-long 5 metre cable. This reduces the need for cable joins resulting in a quick and easy installation. As well as their new copper designs, they are now offering a number of innovative brass 12v garden lights including an “under cap” flood light ideal for hidden mounting under overhanging steps, seats and eaves etc. A variety of our existing in ground lights will also be available in the same brass finish in the next couple of months. Come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bituchem Hard landscaping product specialists Bituchem will be exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE Show this year to introduce the latest addition to its popular asphalt Natratex Cotswold range. The Gloucestershire based company has introduced a porous alternative to the material, known as Natratex Cotswold Porous. This sustainable drainage system (SUDS) is designed to replicate the natural infiltration process of rainfall and eliminates the need for a conventional drainage system and exposed pipework. Laid on a porous receiving layer, the open-structured asphalt material allows water to permeate through the material into the ground, steadily finding its way to a natural watercourse. Bituchem’s Natratex Cotswold material has been specified for a large number of projects across the UK due to its durable qualities with a natural looking finish. Suitable for a wide range of applications, such as public parks, residential areas, public sector projects, university and school developments, the asphalt material can be supplied in a range of colours to complement or contrast with the colour scheme of the landscape. The Natratex Cotswold material was supplied in Buff to assist in the regeneration of Raphael Park in Romford, Essex. As part of a Heritage Funded Project, the material was specified to restore the park’s footpaths. The natural colouring of the buff aggregate blends into the natural surroundings of the park whilst providing a durable pathway for visitors. The versatile material is suitable for a variety of application and can be used to brighten up any area, including domestic or commercial driveways, pedestrian footpaths or school playgrounds. It can also save a significant time and money in applications such as safety routes or multi-use games areas as it can be used to highlight designated areas without the need for expensive markers.

Landscape Forms FGP is an integrated collection of site furniture and lighting created by Milanbased designer Francisco Gomez Paz. The range includes five elements: a bench, litter receptacle, bike rack plus LED pedestrian and path lights. The forms have a fluid simplicity with subtly curved structural frames that give them a soft appearance. “The FGP Collection is really beautiful, with a visual language that is elegant and light,” declares Kirt Martin, Landscape Forms Vice President of Design and Marketing. “While it is contemporary, it references familiar forms, especially in the bench. FGP is proof that you can do great product with a great aesthetic at an attractive price point.” All structural parts of the FGP Collection are cast aluminium and slats on the bench and litter bin are wood. The back height of the bench was designed to allow a sitter to rest an arm on it, making it feel relaxed and welcoming. The top of the litter bin is hinged to swing up for easy servicing. The inclusion of pedestrian lighting enables the FGP Collection to create public spaces that are viable 24 hours a day. The bike rack has a visually arresting shape that echoes the form of a bicycle frame, lending it fresh appeal. All parts come together elegantly with no welding and minimized or hidden fasteners. FGP is the latest addition to Landscape Forms Global 45 Collections. These are products designed by international designers to have global appeal, come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Treebox Sensescape is a new-age tuning consultancy involved in the design, implementation and maintenance of living plant walls and other sensory elements such as sound and scent – to create environment out of space. Partnering with Treebox was down to the Easi-Wall’s robustness and proven installation base across a number of countries. Property management in Belgravia requires a high standard of finish for it’s discerning clientele. The brief was two-fold: Primarily aesthetics but also to improve air quality and ambience. Increasingly – improving air-quality is a factor in London based residential and commercial development. London has some of the dirtiest air in Europe – a fact those living in the city are not particularly proud to highlight. The exterior living plant wall here is a great example of what can be done with a small but striking north facing space with complications of reflected but strong patchy incident light. The plants create a soft and lush texture without being overly intrusive – a drawback to those who want foliage – but not a jungle. Sensescape worked very closely with the client to come up with a planting scheme externally that matched the high quality interior finish of the building. The end result was commenced in March of 2015 and in full and vibrant bloom just three months later in June. Further similar work is planned on an adjacent property in the near future. Come and talk to Treebox about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Tony & Marie Newton The Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus Atlantica Glauca) is often seen as a magnificent, large, spreading parkland tree, reaching more than 20m(65ft) at full maturity. However, it is likely that an Atlas Cedar would quickly become too large for an ordinary garden. By careful, selective, pruning of little shoots this mighty giant has been tamed and successfully incorporated amongst other plants within a quarter-acre plot. At ‘Four Seasons’ garden in Walsall, West Midlands, owners, Marie and Tony Newton, designed and created their award-winning ‘Four Seasons’ garden. Over twenty-five years they have succeeded in keeping their evergreen plants looking attractive and to a readily manageable size. A fine example is their Blue Atlas Cedar, which is eye catching because of its large topiary shape and blue colour, contrasting with neighbouring plants such as their Japanese maples.

Landscape

When this Cedar was planted 23 years ago they decided to keep it to a height that could be safely managed. They chose a height of 2.5m (8ft) but allowed it to grow 0.5m taller before cutting the lead shoot. Over the years the tree has been gradually pruned into elegant cloud shapes. Each year, in late summer, they prune off the fine new shoots to restore the cloud shapes. The chosen height has been maintained without difficulty for the last 15 years. Tony & Marie are featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen to how they maintain their garden.

Brilliant Little Planet Brilliant Little Planet (BLP) and Adapt Low Carbon Group, have found that the use of biodegradable and biobased plastics in the agricultural, forestry and landscaping sectors is still low due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of full life cost benefits. BLP and Adapt carried out a market survey between November 2014 and January 2015 among 52 respondents in the named sectors across Europe who supply in bulk or use products such as tree spirals, mulch mats or tree anchors. The study reveals that while 8 out of 10 respondents use biodegradable products they believe the following matters hinder market growth: Some 53% believe that businesses don’t know that these type of products exist. More than half (53%) think that the cost of a biodegradable product is deemed too high One in four (26%) respondents feel that products are not easily available William Coulet, Managing Director of Brilliant Little Planet, said: “It’s been eye-opening because while it’s considered ‘the thing to do’, many sectors are not embracing more sustainable solutions or buying eco-products. The most important thing that I would take away from this survey is that there is a great need to increase people’s knowledge of biodegradable alternatives to oil-based plastics. Ultimately, this is the most commercially and environmentally viable solution. We believe that BLP has a role to play in education and making a wide range of biobased and biodegradable products easily available.” Come and talk to him on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Graduate Landscapes There’s no reason why the productive part of a large garden should not be as beautifully designed as the rest of the outdoor space says Graduate Landscape designer, Chris James. When your brief from a client is to design a vegetable garden inspired by the restored Kitchen Gardens at Hampton Court Palace you know you need to create a space that is not only highly productive - producing lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables - but visually stunning too.

Our client, a keen vegetable gardener, left behind a productive allotment at her previous address and so understood that our very first step to realising this design needed to be a comprehensive soil analysis which, in turn, showed us what we would need to do to treat the soil and make it more productive for her. And of course no self-respecting vegetable garden is complete without strawberries, rhubarb and, with a nod to our English heritage past, tayberries. Christopher James is the general manager at Graduate Landscapes, an award-winning design consultancy based in Liphook, Hampshire. Come and talk to him on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The King’s Kitchen Garden at Hampton Court was originally built for William and Mary in 1689 on a site that had been Henry VIII’s Jousting Arena. For our project - a new build and a somewaht imposing manorstyle house at Durford Wood, Petersfield we had a 3,000 square metre blank canvas framed by surrounding woodland which we have effectively harnassed to ‘cradle’ our modern take on a Walled Vegetable Garden.

Anne Curry Sculpture Anne Curry’s monumental sculptures are specifically designed for the outdoors and offer a perfect focus point whether in a garden, at the end of an avenue, in a courtyard or a large terrace. A keen gardener herself, she finds inspiration in plant forms and strives to evoke, in her sculptures, the structures and the power underpinning plant growth and to impel the viewer to reassess his own vision of the natural world. She strongly believes that sculpture outdoors should not be an ornament but should form integral part of the landscape. She exhibits regularly here and abroad and finds her work in demand on both sides of the Atlantic. Whatever the background, in formal English gardens, on the slopes of an olive grove in the South of France, on the shore of an ornamental lake in the Netherlands or under the brilliant light of a California setting, her work has always, quietly but powerfully, enhanced its surroundings. Her sculptures are cast either in resin or in bronze, with an array of different patinations, come and see them for yourself on her stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Eurobollard Eurobollard is a company that produces “responsive street furniture” that physically adapts to the needs of those who move around it. The use of street furniture in any place contributes to the appearance and the safety of the area. There are many elements which come together to make an overall more pleasant living space, whether it is a large community project, a small neighborhood or just an individual block of flats. With a large amount of people living within a small area, litter can be an issue. The provision of litter bins will encourage people to responsibly dispose their litter and take pride in their area. Consideration should be given to appropriate placement of bins and their capacity should suit the footfall of the area and the local emptying regime. Litter bins also offer the opportunity to segregate general waste and recycled content at source with dedicated dual-use units or separate side-by-side bins. For example Eurobollard offers with their litter bin LECA or litter bin AGRA a solution for cities with a more ecological, prettier and unique design. For the urban areas with green spaces it’s also important to prioritize the best street furniture to put here. Eurobollard has several solutions. For example their EGO bench, very comfortable and lovely for any cities. EGO is made of stainless steel tube and tropical wood, with only two feet. Come and see examples of their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Europlanters Europlanters have been working with Quinn London Ltd who have recently completed a refurbishment of the historically significant, idyllic courtyard of old houses. Dating back to 1930’s owned by the Thrale Almshouse and relief in Need charity, whose history in the local area can be traced back to 1584 and is named after the Thrale family. The charity’s main function is to manage Almhouses for women over 60, therefore it was important to keep this in mind when focusing on the new design, whilst retaining the features of the old buildings. Consequently the old buildings were gutted, enlarged and refitted inside to create new homes for 8 people. Then two new buildings were added at the front and back of the site, to provide a further 9 new homes, including two which have been specially adapted for women with limited mobility.

Forkway The Forkway Group are the authorised national distributor for Ausa, supplying the full range of the compact rough terrain and telehandler forklift trucks, together with the leading articulated dumper range throughout the UK. They support the products with a comprehensive service support team and parts stockholding for all of their customers. On demonstration at the LANDSCAPE Show will be the Ausa T144H Telehandler. This unique machine only weighs 2400kg and therefore can be transported by trailer behind a conventional 4x4 which makes this very useful for this type of industry. Other features include very low machine height of 1980mm and reach 2180mm with a 550kg load. Full cab and quick hitch coupling ensures maximum versatility.

In the middle, there is private courtyard and garden, so the peace and tranquillity of the old Almshouses has been retained. Europlanters large GRP planters were used to create raised planting beds to enable the elderly residents to enjoy planting in the garden. These were sprayed in a matt finish RAL 7031 to compliment the exterior of the building then planted up with lavender and other lilac and purple flowering plants to blend with the external paintwork.

All new Ausa products are now fitted with the latest Kubota engines including the Tier4 IIIB-EU engines, offering low emissions, reliability and low running costs required for this type of equipment.

Europlanters created new GRP bin stores to keep the area neat and tidy. These were made in various designs to suit the layout of the courtyard and the space outside each apartment.

With the trucks having such a low overall height, the Ausa range of compact equipment is ideal for applications where accessing containers and low buildings, greenhouses and car parks etc would be require, and particularly where the ground conditions are not ideal.

‘It was exciting to be involved in such a worthy project and to create a new product at the same time’ said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters. To find out more information on Europlanters and the projects that they get involved with visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The forklift range includes the unique “quick hitch” carriage which allows forks, buckets, clamps and jibs etc., to be changed in around 20 seconds, giving maximum truck utilisation in any application.

Demonstrations of the Ausa range are readily available to highlight the build quality and ease of operation; and flexible finance packages and extended credit facilities can also be tailored to suit your needs. Green-tech The Barbara Hepworth inspired Summer Garden, located at the front of Tate Britain, opened to the public on 24th June. With five tonnes of Green-tree top soil and Mona Irrigation materials supplied free of charge by Green-tech, this is Tate Britain’s first ever garden installation and boasts bright, vibrant colours and scents. The Summer Garden, inspired by a Barbara Hepworth textile design, is free for visitors to explore and enjoy. The garden, which is positioned at the front of Tate Britain overlooking the Thames, reflects the bold lines and simplicity in Hepworth’s work. Barbara Hepworth was a British sculptor, who was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1903 and studied at Leeds school of Art. She was a leading figure in the international art scene throughout a career spanning five decades. Her Yorkshire roots remained important to Hepworth and she spoke frequently of the effect her surroundings had on her formative years before her death in 1975. Rosie Irving, former lawyer turned horticultural researcher for TV and trained Garden Designer, came up with the idea for the Summer Garden and teamed up with award-winning Garden Designer, Antonia Young, to come up with the design. It was important to the designers to recognise and celebrate Hepworth’s roots and they approached Green-tech to supply topsoil that is manufactured in Yorkshire. Barry Browne, Technical Development Manager, Green-tech said, “We were delighted to be involved in this project and take a little piece of Yorkshire to Tate Britain. Knowing how important Yorkshire was to Barbara Hepworth makes the topsoil even more integral to this garden.” The Barbara Hepworth inspired Summer Garden, will be at Tate Britain’s café lawn, until 2nd September, at which time it will be donated back to the residents of Vauxhall and be permanently relocated in the recently renovated Pocket Park Piazza where it will be maintained by award winning social enterprise group, ‘Streetscape’ who offer apprenticeships to long term unemployed 18-25 year olds. Come and see Green-tech on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Gripsure UK A Cornish inn has transformed a neglected garden into a spectacular decked terrace with exotic plants, walkways, ponds and waterfalls. The Waterwheel Inn, situated in the historic White River valley near St Austell, has created an idyllic outdoor space as part of the property’s ten-year renovation. Mark Willis the owner of The Waterwheel Inn said: “When we took over the business, the garden was really overgrown, with horrible old crazy paving and a falling-down pergula. It needed a huge amount of clearing but we knew there was potential for this to become a real asset to the business: somewhere tranquil for guests to relax with their morning coffee, or enjoy a family meal on a summer’s evening. “Because traditional timber decking can be dangerously slippery, we never imagined we would be able to use timber to achieve such a spectacular result.” Made from Scandinavian Redwood timber, Gripsure decking gives the warm, natural look and feel of traditional decking but its nonslip aggregate strips ensure it stays safe, keeping you on your feet even in wet weather. Comes and visit the Gripsure stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Nustone Products Creating a whole new look for a garden was the task set for Living Gardens and this is something they excel at. After careful thought and consideration, Living Gardens selected Nustone’s high quality blue-black slate paving in the large 600x900 size. These slabs and the Cedar Planking were used to create 2 patio areas, that frames a water feature, creating an aesthetically pleasing garden space. Nustones black slate split face mosaic tiles were then chosen to create free standing feature walls, and to create a waterfall feature. Spotlights added the final finishing touch to this masterful project, casting shadows underneath the more protruding sections of slate mosaic tiles to really reinforce the 3-dimensional quality of the feature walls. The results are an amazing, smooth and vibrant garden that has a great contrast between the use of 2 natural products, that the homeowners are very proud of. Nustone supply a range of stunning natural stone paving products including slate, granite, sandstone and limestone, suitable for all types of garden transformation projects come and see the range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Jacksons Fencing After choosing a worthy winner for their RHS Hampton Court show garden competition in Jon Sims, with the Jacksons Secret Garden Party, Jacksons then went into full tilt in the planning stages of how the garden was to be built. It was quite a task ensuring they had thought of everything and adhere to the strict RHS guidelines on every detail – no pressure then! It was an interesting design, which recreated a street scene centred around a street party, based on a real party Jon witnessed in South London. Around the party were six gardens that express the very different characters of the individuals who have created them. It felt like a show garden that visitors to the show could relate to, with something of interest for everyone. Visitors were able to view the gardens, up close by standing in a virtual doorway in to each of the six areas. Come and talk to Jacksons about the garden on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Probst Handling Equipment With immediate effect, the companies ALMI and Probst have entered into a strategic partnership, with Probst becoming the exclusive worldwide distributor of the ALMI range of block cutters. These will feature the Probst logo, and the “made by ALMI” label. To launch the new partnership, Probst and ALMI are presenting the proven cutters with a new face, the surface is electroplated, and a thick passivation layer is applied. Probst customers are already familiar with this durable finish. On a lot of their other products, it is virtually indestructible, so the products always look good, and don’t have scratched or rusted surfaces. The ALMI block cutters separate the slabs and stones cleanly without dust, noise or dirty water, so no harmful emissions are produced, helping to protect the workers and the local environment. Unlike diamond blade disc cutters, which are subject to wear, and have regular operating costs, the block cutters, have virtually no replacement part costs over an astoundingly long service life- 20 years is not unusual, added to the fact there are no water or energy costs involved in its use, it makes perfect sense to invest in one of their cutters. Come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BRICKWORKER Slab Cutting Guide

DO YOU USE A PETROL CUT-OFF SAW TO CUT SLABS OR BLOCK-PAVING?

Working everyday with the safer use of petrol saws, BRICKWOKER are regularly been asked by Professional Landscapers about cutting paving slabs using a cut-off saw (or disc cutter). Here is why the BRICKWORKER Slab Cutting Guide is the answer to the their key questions. We need to cut a straight line in the right place? – Some landscapers tell you they can cut a straight line in the correct position, some tell you many factors mean it’s not always that simple. If you lock a Slab Cutting Guide on to the slab at the start and finish marks, not only will you cut straight and accurate, you will cut quicker.

I really want to be cutting ‘wet’ to suppress dust? – Dust on any site (even a residential garden) is a major issue, the saw user can be risking a serious fine by cutting dry. Slabs are usually‘dry cut’ because if you use water suppression you cannot follow your own line. The Slab Cutting Guide allows you to cut wet using a pertol saw (not an electric grinder) because you are not following a line, you follow an edge.

How can the saw be used more safely? – Safety is a major consideration with petrol saws and in many instances Professional Landscapers often feel that using a petrol saw ‘freehand’ can risk accidents. The Slab Cutting Guide gives you an edge to cut to and greatly reduces the chance of a‘kick-out’of loss of control. You can also do the new 'Cut-off Saw Training Certificate' offered by the CITB and become a qualified saw operator. I want my labourer/assistant to do all our cutting? – Many Professional Landscapers don’t get anyone else to cut because of accuracy, wastage and safety. This means they have to keep stopping to make a cut themselves. The Slab Cutting Guide gives them the tool to allow others to cut the slabs.

TRAINING NEWS

Petrol Cut-off Saw Operators Training Certificate

Industry is demanding greater training in the use of petrol saws and soon many companies and many sites will require cut-off saw operators to hold a certificate proving they have been properly trained to use a petrol saw. A new half day training course covering all aspects of how to use a cut off saw safely, including selection and fitting of PPE, operating the machine and refuelling through to safely transporting the machine. Successfully completing the course will enable operators to use a cut off saw safely and will result in an Industry recognised 3 year Certificate from the Cskills Awards, the awarding organisation of CITB. The training is a blend of theoretical and practical hands-on study, with attendees knowledge being assessed at the beginning and the end of the course, and a practical assessment – The training is Pass/Fail. Courses are run at local Health & Safety Training Companies, selected Construction Colleges and In-house by Construction Companies who have a training requirement for use of cut-off saws on-site.
