CED Stone Group Following the success of their Emperor Porcelain Paving, CED are excited to introduce a variety of new products over three separate ranges. Inspired by the natural patterning of wood, the four new additions to the Emperor Country range are ideal for those wanting the look of wood but with the benefits and low maintenance of porcelain. Ideal to give your home and garden that country and traditional feel, their Country range consists of subtle patterns and neutral colouring, sure to complement any colour scheme. Suitable for both internal and external use, Emperor Country consists of the longest porcelain tiles available. For the city dwellers and those that just love a more contemporary feel there is their Urban range, which sees the addition of three new tiles. With earthy and urban tones and their square shape, these are ideal for a modern space. This range is perfect for giving a smaller area the illusion of being bigger, which is particularly common in city houses and gardens, and, as Emperor is suitable for external and internal use, you really can create one big space. Joining their successful and established range in Emperor Classic are two new tiles, Kanfanar and Vistum. Like the others in the Classic Range, these tiles are ideally suited for both internal and external use. With moderate patterning and neutral colours, they are complementary additions to the range and will provide a classic and timeless feel wherever used, perfect for creating both traditional or contemporary spaces. Come and see samples of the entire range on the CED stand at LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park.

AIPH Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. We support and promote the work of our members – the grower organisations around the world. Our statistical yearbook gives an unrivalled view of industry trends and developments. We celebrate the most progressive growers through AIPH International Grower of the Year Awards. Our Green City initiative promotes the essential role of plants in creating vibrant urban areas in which people and businesses can thrive. We are responsible for the world’s finest horticultural expositions and provide organisers with expert guidance to create world class spectacles. The AIPH are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show and wish all exhibitors and delegates a successful event.

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) has been formed to help consumers make that informed choice. Formed in 1995, the APL, which operates as a Specialist Group of the Horticultural Trades Association, represents landscapers who have met a required standard of professionalism. Members of the Association are registered with the government endorsed TrustMark Scheme and are regularly inspected and agree to follow a customer charter with clients. These meetings offer members networking opportunities and sharing of ideas and best practice in the industry through the course of the year. Boot & Co. Nurseries Boot & Co. Nurseries were proud to be selected as the main supplier of hardy nursery stock, for the Historical Royal Places high profile ‘Magic Garden’ project at Hampton Court Palace. Not quite a theme park, but undersold by calling it a playground, this unique and hugely imaginative garden was designed by Robert Meyers Associates. Constructed within the 500 year old walls of King Henry VIII’s jousting yard, the theme is carried through some of the design, which also includes mythical beasts and dragons. The garden took shape over a two year period, during which Boot & Co. supplied a large range of large specimens, from mature Magnolia ‘Galaxy’ trees and Tracheocarpus palms to grasses and herbaceous plants. Specialists craftsmen, sculptors and artists were co-ordinated by Frosts Landscapes the managing contractor, who have entered it for a 2016 BALI award, we wish them success. The garden was officially opened my HRH The Duchess of Cambridge in May 2016 and has proven massively popular with children and parents alike. Boot and Co. are exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BALI Back in the early seventies when BALI was formed, the landscape industry as a cohesive entity really didn’t exist. There were however companies providing garden construction and maintenance who wanted their professionalism recognised and, even more importantly, wanted to differentiate themselves from the ‘cowboy’ element attracted by a largely unregulated industry. Since 1972, BALI has been setting the industry benchmark for landscape construction and maintenance. In 1976 the first BALI National Landscape Awards took place and this year celebrate their 40th anniversary. Industry names such as designer Andy Sturgeon cite the BALI Awards as instrumental in fuelling their early ambitions as they entered the industry. Suppliers of industry-related products and services have always been a part of BALI’s membership history in acknowledgement of the fact that, no matter how good the design and the skills of the contractor, quality products and specialist services are fundamental to the success of a landscape project. BALI’s Affiliate (supplier) members support BALI in a host of ways and provide invaluable technical expertise to the membership. Their products grace the show gardens at Chelsea and probably every prestige scheme across the country. 2016 also marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of BALI’s Registered Designer membership. This was a major landmark for BALI and acknowledged the importance of designers and contractors working together, each understanding the challenges of the other, rather than the two disciplines working in isolation in their own bunkers. BALI’s current membership stands at just shy of 850. It is the UK’s largest trade body for the landscape industry and the only one that brings design, construction and maintenance together. And 44 years after it was founded its members continue to be the ones setting the industry benchmark for landscape design, construction, maintenance and product excellence. BALI believes that the LANDSCAPE Show offers its Affiliate members an outstanding opportunity to present their products and services to top flight designers and contractors. Their clients expect the very best in innovation, design and quality and this important event in the industry calendar is exactly the place to find it.

Thrive Did you know that Thrive delivers a training course ‘Understanding Disability in Garden Design’? This one-day course applies what Thrive has learned over its 38 years, training therapists and working with disabled people. Years of experience have shown that the subject is far more complex than simply putting in some raised beds and wheelchairfriendly surfaces. The course considers the factors that need to be taken into account for different disabilities, and addresses inclusivity not just accessibility. Attendees will come away with the knowledge necessary to create actively therapeutic green spaces for disability, recovery and rehabilitation. Thrive began as the Society for Horticultural Therapy and Rural Training in Frome in 1978, set up by Chris Underhill, a young horticulturist inspired by his work with people with learning disabilities in Africa. Training has always been a primary purpose of the organisation. It operates a range of training courses at eight centres countrywide. These range from a one day introductory ‘Step into STH’ course to a one year Professional Diploma run in conjunction with Coventry University. Thrive also runs structured horticultural therapy programmes at gardens in Reading, Battersea, Birmingham and Gateshead. These help people of nearly all ages face a wide range of difficulties including learning and physical disabilities, mental ill-health, stroke and cardiac illness, dementia, trauma and many more. Programmes are also delivered for older people in the community and at residential care homes. Come and talk to Thrive about their work on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Cycle-Works The Cycle-Works Velo-Safe is a space efficient cycle locker that can be arranged in many different ways. The unique, stylish, wedge shape design means that they have a small footprint and can fit into corners and areas that would not normally accommodate a cycle locker. The simplest configuration is in one long row or interlocking, side to side, with access from both sides. However, they can also fit neatly into a 90-degree corner, form a semi-circle or even a complete circle. They can also be configured in waves or doubled back to back. The Velo-Safe individual locker was launched at the Cycle Show at Earls Court in October 2008, to critical acclaim, and it is now European and US Design protected. Since then many lockers have been installed at sites around the UK, with more being done all the time. Locations include hospitals, universities, train stations, council offices and large companies. The Velo-Safe is made of durable high quality materials in a variety of thicknesses, including a 6mm thick top plate for the frame. Clever use of bracing provides extra strength where needed. Combined with the triangular design, this provides an extremely strong structure. Materials used include pre-galvanised and Zintec coated steel, which can be powder coated in any RAL colour.

Arboricultural Association The Arboricultural Association recently organised a tour of the Parliamentary Estate to encourage closer ties between the Arboricultural sector and Parliamentarians. Baroness Fookes, Chair of the APPGHG recognised the ‘Parliamentary Tree Tour’ as making a significant contribution to parliamentarians understanding and knowledge of the value of urban trees. The session was well attended, informative and has provided a springboard for further action and progress in recognising the true social and commercial value of the urban tree-scape and the industry that services and maintains this valuable national asset. 10 peers and MP’s along with other guests, spent the morning touring the Palace of Westminster estate and learning about the establishment of trees in urban spaces, measuring their value through the i-Tree initiative and getting an in-depth insight into the benefits of trees and the initiatives in the sector to develop effective apprenticeship schemes. Chairman of the Arboricultural Association, Jago Keen commented that: “ …the event proved to be an excellent opportunity to showcase the value of trees, tree establishment, those that manage trees and the role of the Association as the ‘go-to’ body for arboriculture in the UK. We engaged, educated, and received questions from all of the attendees and arboriculture is firmly on their radar. We are building a wide array of friends in both houses - we were very fortunate to meet Lord Gardiner who is heading up many aspects of Government business relating to the arboriculture sector.’’ Keith Sacre will be representing the Arboricultural Association as one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Otterbine Water Aeration Systems A Gemini aerating fountain from water specialist Otterbine transformed a lake at the Ballycoolin branch of digital printing company Xerox in Dublin. Chosen by facilities management company Acacia and installed by irrigation specialists Aquaturf Solutions, the 3HP surface spray aerator was favoured for its dual ability to circulate the water, which was at risk of becoming stagnant when the previous 12year old fountain broke, and provide a striking feature for the business park’s canteen diners to enjoy. Gavin Osborne, facilities engineer at Acacia who had the job of finding the perfect fountain, says: “We’d been looking into the right fountain for three to four months before we were recommended the Gemini by a colleague who’d recently installed one at a local golf club.” According to Gavin the Gemini ticked all the boxes: “It was important we found something with a practical purpose to maintain a clean and clear lake and provide an attractive focal point in the commercial landscape of the business park.” The Gemini is both functional and beautiful, as its power can move over three times more water than decorative pattern fountains, yet its simple beauty provides an appealing aesthetic.
Perennial Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough. Challenges such as illness, injury, debt, bereavement or redundancy could strike any of us at any time. Perennial is there to offer free and confidential advice, as well as practical and emotional support, for as long as it is needed and that extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Many of us support charities that are close to our hearts as a way of giving something back, and where better to direct that support than close to home to help the people within our own industry? An easy way for companies to show their support is by signing up to the Perennial Partner scheme, where the business makes an annual donation by choosing the level appropriate for their business - Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze. The continuation of the charity’s work relies heavily on support from the trade, but there is still a way to go before Perennial, and the help it offers, is known by everyone in the industry. By exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September, Perennial aims to raise awareness and increase support. Please visit Perennial’s stand at the show to find out more.
“The level of power and spray were exactly what we were looking for,” says Gavin. “The water is kept aerated and healthy and the 1.5m vertical spray pattern is really striking.” And with that Gavin perfectly summed up the Gemini, for with it you do not have to sacrifice the pretty for the practical. To learn more about Gemini aerating fountains, and other water management solution systems, visit the Otterbine stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park.

Tobermore Tobermore supplied McGirr Architects with an attractive hard landscaping solution for Cedar Villas, a care facility for adults with complex and enduring mental illnesses at the Waterside Hospital in Londonderry. P & K McKaigue Ltd managed the construction of the project which consisted of 16 self-contained units to accommodate living space for patients, staff facilities and communal areas. The units were designed to provide a warm, traditional feel, creating a ‘home from home’ for patients residing within the facility. In perfect balance with the traditional style of the project, Tobermore provided McGirr Architects with Roma, a block paving product that evokes timeless style and elegance. Roma undergoes a tumbling manufacturing process that produces an aged, antique finish and the three-sized block design creates a romantic, courtyard look of yesteryear. Tobermore also supplied Tegula Setts as a bordering product for Roma. Tegula Setts is a tumbled product that produces a charming, rustic look. Come and see examples from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Harrowden Turf St James’s Park in Central London came alive this summer after 800 square metres of Meadowmat Wild Flower Mat was installed beside the lake. Keepers at the park were looking for a wildlife-friendly way of brightening up the lakeside that wouldn’t impact on the water birds that graze, rest and nest beside the water. Her Majesty’s birthday celebrations made it all the more important that the park was as colourful as possible this summer. As always in this day and age, the cost of installation and maintenance were of prime consideration. Even The Royal Parks are not immune from budget constraints. Park Managers liked the idea of using perennial planting that needs minimal long-term maintenance. Using native plants to create habitat for a wild range of creatures was an attractive idea. As was the concept of speedy installation and establishment Meadowmat wild flower mat was spotted at Battersea’s LANDSCAPE Show in 2015 and seemed to fit the bill perfectly – the only point of concern was whether it would be damaged by waterfowl trampling it – or over-grazing it before it became properly established. As you can see from the photographs, those fears proved unfounded.

Mike Turner, Assistant Park Manager is delighted with the results. “The public are enjoying this show of wildflowers just as much as the wildlife” he said “and the beauty of it is that using native species is helping to restore the balance of nature in the very heart of London.” Come and see more examples from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bronzino Bronzino was founded in 2005 to keep alive old European metal work techniques. It began by re-inventing the old style copper riveted cauldrons and to compliment these designed an understated ribbed copper planter that could fit into any environment. These are made in the Bronzino workshop entirely by hand in copper, brass or zinc and given traditional foundry finishes. As a manufacturer Bronzino can easily undertake to make most custom sizes and the ribbed planters have been made up to 2m diameter. For the Spring Restaurant in Somerset House, garden designer Jinny Blom was asked by Skye Gingell to create an unusual garden for her new restaurant. The private dining room is conceived as a garden although it sits in an elegant atrium at the heart of the restaurant. Huge leaves of Gunnera manicata were cast in marble and set in bronze frames to clad the walls. The bronze theme was continued by the careful placing of Bronzino ribbed planters in bronze finish around the restaurant on movable platforms devised by Jinny (Bronzino can also integrate wheels internally). Large ribbed planters were also placed between tables and chairs along the entire length of the passage leading to the restaurant from the main courtyard and Waterloo Bridge. Come and see further examples of the Bronzino range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Streetscape Cirencester Civil Engineering Ltd
Streetscape is an award winning social enterprise. We provide apprenticeships in landscape gardening to 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, helping them to build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfil their dreams and move into and retain work: growing lives, transforming landscapes.
CCE recently were involved in a project which aimed to enhance visitor satisfaction when visiting the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP) by undertaking a park wide resurfacing project, replacing the existing surface dressing in areas where this has gone into decline, aiming to increase the aesthetic value the park provides.
In so doing we design, landscape and maintain gardens across South London for residential, commercial and communitybased clients. Since 2010 we have earned a reputation for delivering beautifully constructed gardens to suit all plot sizes and budgets.
The London Legacy Development Corporation is responsible for the redevelopment of the Park, as they are establishing the QEOP as an international visitor destination, it is essential that the park meets the standards which would be expected of a high profile visitor attraction. The aim is to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle which encourages walking and cycling through safe and pleasant routes across the Park. Acting as main contractor for the project, Cirencester Civil Engineering Ltd, have been instructed to carry out the groundworks, including; breaking out of existing walkways and any remedial works to underlying asphalt or concrete layers; preparing the surface, including any required reinstatement works prior to resurfacing; resurfacing of footpaths with Resin Surfacing; and the installation of ducting for CCTV cameras.
We are driven by one, simple, overarching goal: that each and every long-term unemployed young person we provide an apprenticeship to then moves into, and retains work, following their time with us. The LANDSCAPE Show is a fantastic opportunity for us create greater awareness of our apprenticeships within the industry, in turn giving our apprentices a larger network of companies to approach for work placements once their year with Streetscape is complete. As a charity operating as a landscape contractor, the LANDSCAPE Show also links us to many new suppliers, meaning we can provide an even better service to our clients. The show gets bigger and better every year and we’re looking forward to another successful show in 2016!
Come and talk to CCE about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Butter Wakefield Butter Wakefield recently completed a project for some friends and clients set on the outskirts of a charming little village in Oxfordshire. The brief was to provide the clients with two functional spaces either end of a modern addition located at the back of the house; one off the kitchen on the east side of the house and one off the dining room on the west side of the house. It was Butters task to join the traditional thatched cottage to its new contemporary other half, making functional living and dining spaces as well as creating beautiful planted areas throughout. The clients wanted a simple scheme that would relate to their quirky cottage as well as please the eye. A lot of random field stone from a small existing extension which the main contractors tore down was reused and the stone was combined to make the retaining walls, L-shaped steps and the split stone paths around the house with modern concrete paving by Schevellis. Butter said, “As a designer I was a little concerned the two together wouldn’t really work, but my clients were convinced that it was the unusual look they were after. I specified planting pockets in both terraces to soften the paving and add green wherever possible. As the aspect is south east and south west we used excess sedum from the new green roof over the kitchen and a combination of thyme and erigeron daisies. I placed a multistem Prunus serrula Tibetica in a divine Copper Kettle from Architectural Heritage to add height and interest in dining area.” Butter Wakefield is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen to her.

Timber Decking and Cladding Association Readyhedge Ltd Readyhedge, based at Court Gate Nursery in Eckington near Pershore, Worcestershire, have been growing and supplying top quality instant hedging and screening plants to landscape designers and gardeners since 2003. With a range of instant hedging that is unrivalled in the UK, Readyhedge have built a reputation for uncompromising quality, innovation and reliability. Supplied readyspaced and ready to plant, our hedging is available in a huge range of varieties and sizes and can be delivered to order direct to site anywhere in the country. Supplied in one-metre troughs, Readyhedge plants are irrigated, fed and trimmed regularly in the field or container and before despatch, plants are inspected and cleared of any imperfections by hand – we call it hand-crafted hedging. Now, for even easier handling, hedging is also available in our specially designed Readybags. Readybag hedging, available up to two metres high depending on season and species, delivers a more mature, denser hedge that can be quickly trimmed along the top for an immediate effect within minutes of planting. The instant hedging concept, now adopted by Readyhedge-affiliated companies in Ireland and the Netherlands, cuts planting time by at least half when compared to placing individual plants, and hedging can be bent to conform to any design template, no matter how complex. We also supply pleached and panelled trees for aerial screening in a range of heights.
The arguments for utilising timber as the material to grow our carbon economy are multi-faceted. They include the fact that roughly one tonne of carbon is stored for every metre cubed of timber used – this makes timber one of the safest and most effective carbon stores available. Also in managed European forests there are more trees planted than harvested, making timber the only truly renewable mainstream building material. And the list goes on. There are even stronger arguments to use timber correctly to get the most out of this miracle of nature. The Timber and Cladding Association (TDCA) exists to provide you with independent guidance through a range of resources and services that will help you to build your decking and cladding structures with long term performance in mind. The TDCA website at www.tda.org.uk covers all you need to know in order to effectively design, install and maintain timber decking or cladding. With publications free to download, technical guidance, where to source good quality materials and even a 90 second video to give you basic know-how in an instant, it is a ‘must visit’ for anyone thinking about designing or installing a decking or cladding. The TDCA also operates DeckMark and CladMark quality accreditation schemes to give you added assurance about the materials you are purchasing. The TDCA are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show and look forward to meeting you on their stand at the show this September in Battersea Park.

Gripsure UK Ltd Strength, style and safety are all important when it comes to choosing surfaces for landscaping projects. Hardwood decking from the UK’s leading anti slip decking company, Gripsure, offers all three. With a 50+ year expected in-service life, Gripsure Hardwood is available in a range of FSC certified timbers from yellow balau to larch, oak or cedar, to complement any design. The boards feature Gripsure’s innovative safety design – anti slip aggregate inserts to ensure they don’t get slippery, even in wet or icy weather. Gripsure Hardwood is sufficiently hardwearing to provide a long life in commercial areas with a high footfall. The natural beauty of the timber also makes it a popular choice for homeowners who want to create a decked area that is both stylish and safe. Gripsure Managing Director Mike Nicholson said: “The last few years have seen good growth in the timber decking market, but more and more people are discovering that traditional decking gets lethally slippery in wet weather. Offering next day delivery to 95% of the UK, Gripsure offers a wide range of anti slip decking options for commercial projects and homeowners. Martha Krempel We recently spoke with Martha Krempel who is one of this years featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. We spoke about a recent project in London. “I loved doing this job, the client gave a good brief, and was open to interpretation. The renovations on the house were nearing completion as we started work. As part of the brief I was to incorporate a large stained glass window salvaged from the original house somewhere in the garden design.” She went on to say “The garden itself has four distinct areas. There are Mediterranean Olives, Rosemary and Agapanthus grace the roof terrace, soft ferns and Festucas cushion the ground in the rear garden where a commemorative stone statue of a boy marked the buried ashes of a family member. The stained glass window is sited behind a Betula in the rear garden and is backlit. At ground level, a sunken side garden had a high raised planted area and retaining wall faced in rich cherry wood. To create a screen here, pleached Tillias were planted, alongside Amelanchier and under planted with a profusion of Roses, Euphorbias and Nepeta. The front garden lawn was a challenge, the soil levels had been lowered by the main contractor and we were presented with a bed of unforgiving clay. It poured with rain for weeks preventing us preparing the ground. Finally the lawn went down and looks great complimenting the scheme. To mark the corner boundary of the property and to give to give structure and majesty to the front garden a Liquidamber was planted where the evening sun will catch its’ Autumn spectacle. I’m looking forward to photographing the rusts and fiery reds complimented by the under planting of Achillea Terracotta and Knifophia “Tawny King”, shielded from wind by the original Victorian brick wall. At the front of the property beside the parking area is a smart storage area built in cherry wood. We topped this with meadow turf and under planted with a random mix of bulbs, as the season enters the late summer the grasses have turned golden fawn echoing the architectural timber detail on the front of the building.” Martha will be speaking at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Michael Blow Mrbs Michael Blow is proud to have the opportunity to display a new project for the LANDSCAPE show. This is a unique sculpture that he is displaying within the context of a water feature with the aim of creating a focal point for the garden. The sound and movement of the water is both relaxing but also enlivening. The simple form is completed by the fascinating geology of the stone that gives it a sense of permanence but also movement. Michael said “I enjoy making forms with a flow that draw the eye but leave space for the imagination. This is a sculpture created to allow the mind to wander. I have loved creating a wide variety of art works and features for my clients over the years and aim to make pieces that complement both interior and exterior spaces. Come and visit his stand at the LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and discuss any projects you may have in mind.

Decori There is a strong trend for themed garden spaces at the moment, recent influences have been Oriental and Moroccan inspiration. At Decori, their portfolio of designs now caters for these influence along with the more contemporary and retro designs. The bespoke creative department at Decori was put to good use when the Love Your Garden television program hosted by Alan Titchmarsh and his team approached them to produce a set of panels based on Nepal for a Gurkha who now lives in Canterbury. Gurkha Hari Budha Magar, who lost the use of both his legs in Afghanistan in an IED incident. Hari thinks nothing of going out of his way to help others, his own garden was a challenge, and so the team transform his overlooked plot into a colourful private sanctuary. Decori created a three panel wall mounted art work which encapsulated themes from Hari’s life so that this inspirational gentleman would have a unique visual reminder of his time in the Gurkhas. The Decori Team also designed screens to give privacy to this tranquil garden, these also incorporated a specially designed motif. At Decori they were thrilled to be asked to help with this transformation, making a bespoke art work for such a garden was a privilege. Come and see further examples of Decori’s work on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance.
LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 13th of September 2016, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online in August at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.
On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.” Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend.

AllGreen Group AllGreen Group was proud to be a part of the Telegraph’s Gold medal winning garden at RHS Chelsea 2015. The stunning garden was based on strong lines of rectilinear geometry, textural relief and differing scaled waterways. Working with this brief, Allgreen were commissioned to supply two key products for this inspiring garden – the FONTE Original Basaltite Crystal Paving with the subtle Anticato finish, which gently displays the consistent characteristics of this beautiful stone, and their unique CARREG Selfbinda Cotswold Buff Gravel. A great choice for paths and sunken seating areas – this product brought together the greys of the feature concrete wall and the creams of the furniture and served as a true contrast to the greens and colours of the planting. Come and see products from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Rivelin Numerous examples exist of combining good landscape design with the clever use of materials that seamlessly transition us between both indoor and outdoor spaces, bringing the inside out and vice versa. More and more we are looking to blur these boundaries, improving our use of outdoor spaces and prolonging our enjoyment in them. The patio heaters or wood burners that have traditionally kept us warm into the evening are somewhat dated in their designs and practicality for modern living. These rather unsightly and dirty heating devices haven’t reflected the same developments in landscape design standards. Alternative solutions are now available that offer a significantly improved combination of styling, cutting edge design, clean and consistent heat output, whilst also offering functional convenience. Imagine a fire that was clean burning, with no smoke, yet provided more than enough heat. Imagine that same fire providing the functionality of being a table whilst providing an eye catching focal point. Finally, imagine that through creative design, styling, engineering, and selective use of high performance/low maintenance materials, that same fire table was built for those who love luxury outdoor living. At Rivelin they are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible with their fire tables to enhance the outdoor living experience. Their expert team has a wealth of knowledge so come and see how they can help you on your next outdoor project. Find them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

James Wilkinson Blacksmith A beautiful poppy sculpture was recently created by James Wilkinson Blacksmith for a clients’ garden. Standing at 1.5 metres tall the poppy sculpture, made from solid galvanised steel was created using traditional blacksmithing techniques, and a coke forge. Each petal and stem was worked individually with the hammer and anvil to create their own unique shape and texture. The piece was galvanised and treated with an etch to give a multi tonal, maintenance free finish. The piece was designed by James to enhance the established flower border and make a focal point within the bed. The poppies will blend beautifully with the surrounding flowers within the summer months, and will be more dominant and provide structure to the flower bed during the Autumn and Winter, when there are no flowers in bloom. James takes inspiration from the area around the proposed piece when designing. It might be the period of a property, prominent architectural features and often, as in this case; takes inspiration for one the surrounding flora and fauna. James Wilkinson Blacksmith welcomes sculptural commissions for private houses or public spaces, come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Europlanters Ltd The former Marmite Factory, Vox Studios has become a bustling hub for new and growing businesses with both office space and industrial units. This wonderfully refurbished property with its urban industrial feel is the perfect place for businesses seeking a modern building environment with a zesty vibe. Inside is a superb, contemporary café and just outside is a thriving co-working area with outdoor communal areas. Europlanters supplied 4 huge Brushed 304 grade 2mm thick Stainless steel troughs 4000/750/500mmh and Fifteen 700mm Diameter / 500mm high Brushed Stainless Steel Planters which were used throughout the building. Each planter was made bespoke and given a GRP lining to prevent any chemicals in the compost from corroding the metal. To make the troughs into large planting beds, the planters were made into 2 metre sections and the ends of the planters were cut out with accurate holes drilled for fixings which attached the planters together, making a continuous run for HG construction to plant the topiary into. ‘To me Stainless Steel is the marmite of the landscape industry, you either love it or hate it’ said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters ‘however, here, it is perfect for this industrial location giving that urban look to an old factory site.’ Come and talk to John about their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Carolyn Willitts Carolyn Willitts trained as a theatre designer at the Bristol Old Vic and designed sets and costumes for productions for almost ten years. She is now a chartered landscape architect and the founder of CW Studio Ltd, where she uses her theatre experience to bring a fresh creativity to landscape design. Carolyn is currently designing the landscape for Napier Gateway, which is a mixed-use proposal for a gateway brownfield site in Luton. The masterplan includes apartments, shops, restaurants, bars, and a hotel, all designed by the award-winning GA Studio Architects. Carolyn and her team are designing all landscape elements from the public realm and fountain square to the private roof terraces, the woodland boundary, and the new city park. Theatre is created within the park with curved paths leading through the changing colours and textures of the planting to a circular timber ‘stage’ and amphitheatre seating. Planting includes swathes of ornamental grasses, specimen trees and chalkland limestone meadow. Along the main avenue, the simple geometry of the landscape is overlaid with grids of trees, benches, and bespoke lighting columns. Feature artscape, including etching words and patterns into stone seating and paving, helps to create a unique setting and identity while incorporating references to Luton’s historical and industrial past. Carolyn recently taught on the London College of Garden Design Diploma, where she had fun making theatre-style models with the students for an imaginary frontage and courtyard to a contemporary art gallery. You can listen to Carolyn as one of our featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

Kate Gould Kate Gould recently finished a project in central London. We asked her about the project, “This garden had many original plants and features which were to remain in the scheme including an existing pond, large Lime trees, a Mahonia and Philadelphus. Although fast growers the Lime trees and Philadelphus at the back of the garden provide privacy and these were left in place but pruned to a more manageable shape. The Mahonia set within a Buxus hedge looked poorly but with food and the installation of an irrigation system it, the Buxus and Pleioblastus underneath have all responded well and now reflect the vigour of the new planting.” Kate went on to say, “The brief for the garden was of a designed garden with a wild edge to be gardened by its owners. York stone paving was used for its beauty and permanence and plants that contrast each other in form as well as colour were used within a palette that has interest all year. Paeonia, Polygonatum, Geranium and Asarum work in the more shady areas whilst Sedum, Hemerocallis and Campanula pack a punch nearer the house where it is sunnier. Grasses were also used to soften the Yorkstone and create movement within the scheme. In order to add some height instantly Agapanthus were planted in Urbis Mortar60 planters and in July create a wonderful blue haze as well as attracting pollinating insects and honey bees.” Come and find out more about Kate’s projects as she is one of our featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The conference will also explore the wide range of dramatic applications shrubs can lend themselves to and show how rare, exotic and classic shrubs are being re-worked into contemporary planting plans. Speakers, who range from landscape designers to plantsmen and women, include Arabella Lennox-Boyd, Jennie Gay, Nigel Dunnett, Roger Philips and Juan Grimm. Each of them brings a wealth of knowledge on planting combinations, structural use and shrub species from around the globe. NCC Streetscape Ltd A prestige stone driveway was created using 100mm rumbled magma granite setts, by the natural stone paving specialists from PDG Groundworks, who recommended that the setts be jointed with the slurry applied, self-compacting and non-staining, vdw 850 jointing mortar from NCC Streetscape. This unique material is the ‘state-of-the-art’ and market leader in stone paving jointing today - and provides extremely strong and durable joint installations, especially suitable for trafficked areas such as driveways, parking areas and roadways, including heavy vehicles. The vdw 850 jointing mortar is capable of accommodating frequent and heavy vehicle traffic loads, and it prevents weed growth or boring insect infestations, it is also fully resistant to the use of de-icing salts and freeze thaw action, plus it is suitable for frequent cleaning with mechanical street sweepers. The vdw 850 jointing mortar also has advantages in its application, because it can be applied in cold and wet weather, it is extremely fast to apply and then it hardens rapidly, allowing the job to be completely finished, the contractor to leave site and the customer to put the driveway or other paved surfaces back into service as soon as possible. Come and talk to NCC Streetscape about it on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Gordon Low Products Ltd Brad at Aquamaintanance was contacted by Peterborough based Dencora Ltd who’s head office was in need of a makeover. Their once beautiful 200m long decorative pond had stopped holding water and was becoming an eyesore, they needed a new liner. The re-lining was certainly going to be a challenge with some brick pillars that supported the offices and several pedestrian bridges along the length of the pond. The original liner was installed before the building work began, so replacing the liner and working around so many up stands was going to be a project. Due to the length of the lake, the liner would need to be seamed, and the pillars supporting the bridges and the offices needed to be wrapped and made water tight, not to mention the large fountain right in the centre. Brad started by covering the whole site with Gordon Low’s 250gsm Geotextile for extra protection. The area to be lined had a built up brick edge which had been built on top of the original liner. There was no way that Brad could remove the bricks and start again and so he used termination bars and fixings to secure the liner to the whole of the 200m edge. The fountain feature in the middle could not be removed and again Brad used his Firestone detailing skills to wrap around the base of the fountain and make the whole area water tight. Come and talk to Gordon Low about your water projects on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

APL WorldSkills UK Competition Landscaping students and apprentices from across the nation have taken part in knockout heats over the past few months, run by the Association of Professional Landscapers. The final seven semi-finalists all competed for their place in the final at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park. The public interest in the competition this year was at an all-time high, with many members of the public requesting coverage on the BBC to enable them to see how the competitors had got on. The scores from each heat were all of a high standard and the judges and Joe Swift, who came to announce the result to the competitors, felt that they all deserved to go through to the final. Joe said he was impressed with the quality of the gardens and the talent the competitors have shown, especially considering the challenging weather conditions over the event. Progressing to the NEC for the national final, are: • Jacob Botting, Myerscough College • Aaron Byrne, Reaseheath College • Ross Conquest, Conquest Hard Landscaping • Josh Dow, SRUC Oatridge • Jonathan Long, CAFRE • Shea McFerran, CAFRE • Christopher Page, Dundee and Angus College The semi-finalists were tested on their timber, brickwork and planting over 18 hours to individually build a full 6m x 2m garden, and were marked on the quality of their work and attention to detail by judges Jody Lidgard, Simon Abbott, and Steve Smith. The final of the WorldSkills UK Landscaping competition will once again take place at the Birmingham NEC on 17-19 November. British Sugar TOPSOIL The LANDSCAPE Show is the ideal event at which to launch the new premier planting soil HortLoam from British Sugar TOPSOIL to the country’s leading designers and contractors. British Sugar TOPSOIL’s latest product innovation has been created in response to feedback received from customers of their Landscape20 seeding and turfing topsoil. They wanted a product with the same reputation for sustainability, consistency and safety but with additional reserves of organic matter and a more open, friable texture, which would provide the optimum environment for establishing young plants and encouraging healthy root growth. HortLoam is a BS3882:2015 compliant sandy loam containing PAS100 & CQP accredited ‘green’ compost. A percolation rate of typically 1.44mm/hour is achieved by the addition of a coarse sand, which creates a more open and free-draining structure than Landscape20. HortLoam excels in shrub and vegetable planting schemes, inner city landscape and podium projects, raised beds, rootball tree and ornamental planting schemes. As with Landscape20, its neutral to alkaline pH makes it unsuitable for acid-loving plants. Now, with HortLoam for planting and Landscape20 for seeding and turfing, landscape professionals have premier products designed specifically for the task that tick all the client boxes for sustainability, consistency, quality, safety and efficacy. Visit the British Sugar TOPSOIL stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to see samples of HortLoam and Landscape20.

Step Change Design Ltd. Garden designers Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell from Step Change Design have been reflecting on the key message they want to share with fellow garden designers from their research into the reasons why care setting gardens are not being used more actively. Mark said, “Our message to our designer peers, and other outside specialists, is simple. If we want to avoid the risk that the care setting’s investment in our work will be a waste of money, we need to start from an understanding of where they are culturally.” Debbie added, “For example, if the care setting is not using the outside space they already have, then a brand new garden may not be used after the novelty value has worn off because the setting does not have embedded routines of engaging with the outdoors regularly. It’s important to design from where the care setting’s culture currently is and not from where we think it may be.” The designers studied care culture at work during their research and identified a range of care practices and attitudes towards the outside space. It is this ‘spectrum of care’ that underpins their diagnostic tool, the Care Culture Map and Handbook. Debbie explained, “If a designer uses the Map with their care setting client, it will help to ensure their work and support aligns with their current identified care culture position, resulting in a much more cost-effective design, and matching what the care setting will be prepared to use with their residents.” This is at the heart of their new approach to working with care setting clients. They call it ‘Relationship-Centred Design’, which entails a move away from one-off, entire-space commissions to more modest interventions, working closely with the care setting over a longer period of time to aid the setting along its culture change journey and increasing engagement for the residents in their outside space. Debbie and Mark will demonstrate the Care Culture Map and explain their new approach during their presentation and Q & A session on Wednesday 14th September at 1pm at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park. Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). They work to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.
Online Plant Market Online Plant Market is a new concept for the sale of real garden plants that are planted in sustainable gardens through garden centers, landscapers and architects. A garden is increasingly seen as an extension of a building, an investment which also contributes to the value of your property.
There are many pests and diseases that could seriously damage our crops and plants. The Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI), part of APHA, is responsible for enforcing strict plant health controls in England and Wales. PHSI checks for quarantine organisms (harmful plant pests and diseases). Our island status gives us a natural barrier, and PHSI monitors imports to ensure the risk of importing and spreading new pests and diseases is minimised.
Online Plant Market offers marketing, promotion, knowledge and information in an online network of producers, plant garden centers and cash and carries for architects and landscapers who deliver timber and only want to work with quality garden plants.
PHSI have a programme of surveillance at nurseries, plant retailers and natural environment sites such as parks. We check plants and provide phytosanitary certificates and plant passports for plants being exported.
Offering easy access to garden plants for professionals from more than 450 growers from UK and the continent, over 4,000 species, and 40,000 different batches of plants, available in an Online portal 24/7 and discounted price when booked online.
They engage with industry and the general public to inform and raise awareness of plant pests and diseases and the importance of biosecurity procedures in reducing the risk of their spread.
The Online Plant Market show pictures, description and account related prices. They offer quality products, fresh from growers with their quality brand. They offer design assistance with plant characteristics filters in the shop and many info on the home page and local dealers. They believe in the power and convenience of e-commerce combined with personal contact and attention to the customer. Therefore, your local dealer will be available to give advice while collecting your order. Visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to see how it works and meet your local dealer.
Greater awareness of how diseases can enter the UK, e.g. in untreated wooden packaging or hidden in luggage and the impact they can have, reduces the chance of this happening. Raised awareness of harmful plant pests and diseases increases the chances of finding and eradicating any that do arrive. Even the simplest bio-security actions, like cleaning footwear and equipment between sites, makes a big difference to reducing the risk of spread. Everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment. Come and find out more on the APHA stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Public Outdoor Creations Public Outdoor Creations offers high quality, flexible street furniture for public places. They offer two different collections that could be mixed and matched. The elements are made out of wood and steel. Their products are available in CorTen steel or a RAL-colour of your choice. Besides that, they are easy to change according to the latest trends, requirements and changing environment of public places. That makes their concept unique. A good example of how to apply their modular collection is one of their projects in Terneuzen (The Netherlands). The retail landscape in this inner city has changed drastically due to the rise of online shopping. More and more shops were closing, which had a huge impact on the attractiveness of the city. The city of Terneuzen asked Public Outdoor Creations to come up with a proposal to upgrade their public space. The Design Studio POC made a plan to improve their urban landscape. They delivered several modular design elements to greenify their public space. The combination of green elements with seating areas, creates appealing recreational areas. Beside that they also realized a custom made screen to hide an unattractive façade. On top of that they also supplied several planters. Their planters are designed in a way that they are easy to move with a forklift if this is necessary. These planters are equipped with their Root Care System. Due to the natural water reservoir at the bottom and the special wall insulation, their planters are very maintenance friendly.  For more information about this unique concept, please visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BCA Matériaux Anciens BCA Matériaux Anciens (Antique Materials) stock France’s greatest ranges of antique reclaimed materials for exteriors and interiors and export them worldwide, so the following consignments of antique setts reclaimed by BCA from a 19th century railway station at Versailles are typical finds. They allow good continuity of authentic materials for landscape and garden designers. They now have taken delivery of a large consignment of classic French gritstone (BCA ref 201603) and granite (BCA ref 201604) setts from Versailles. There are two separate consignments, so either gritstone or granite can be specified. On this historic postcard from 1905 we see the paving in front of the station in Versailles near the château. It is actually very close in stone type and worn surface to the antique gritstone cobbles of the « Cour d’Honneur » at the Chateau de Versailles. Come and see some samples for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) LANDSCAPE provides the perfect platform from which to discuss and debate aspects of this diverse and vibrant industry. On the first day of this year’s event BALI is hosting a seminar entitled ‘Developing the well-rounded, and grounded, garden designer’. The industry panel comprises BALI members John Wyer MBALI FSGD, a multi-award winning designer and landscape contractor; Nigel Philips MBALI FSGD, a respected garden designer and lecturer on the subject at Plumpton College; and Paul Cowell CMLI, former BALI National Chairman, a chartered landscape architect and busy landscape contractor. Experience shows that many of today’s young garden designers lack the requisite CAD skills, have little commercial understanding or experience and, crucially, have insufficient knowledge of contracting to inform their designs. Add to this a failure to manage client expectations and it’s little wonder that the designer/contractor relationship can, at times, be strained. This BALI-sponsored panel debate will consider: ‘What is the right training for garden designers and how can we ensure young designers reach the workplace with the right skills?’ On day two of LANDSCAPE, BALI board director and owner of Acre Landscapes Nigel Bowcock will be joining other industry movers and shakers to talk at the New Starters Conference. With an MSc in Landscape Management and a career in landscaping and grounds maintenance spanning more than thirty years, Nigel is well placed to give young people joining the industry a wealth of information, observations and advice. His opinions on the importance of trade association membership at the start of any landscaping career will undoubtedly come to the fore at the conference!

Furthermore, they are appointed to supply Wacker Neuson Compact equipment including Mini Excavators, Skidsteer & Telescopic Loaders and Compaction Rollers. Nordic Garden Buildings The latest story surrounding Nordic Garden Buildings relates to the expansion of the range and flexibility of their buildings. This year, they launched a number of new buildings but the building that stands out from the crowd is the Nordic ‘Berkshire’ Orangerie. As with all of their buildings, the modular approach to ‘create’ your own design is what sets Nordic apart. Each model in the range can be adapted to suit your needs, this could include less glass, a different roof, colours, sizes and so on. Now they are about to re-invent the Berkshire. Due to its design, it fits perfectly in to a home office solution. Swapping out the back and side walls for panels instead of glazing all of a sudden transforms a stunning garden room into a fully functional, light and bright working environment. The Nordic Eco base allows electrics to be installed through the floor and corner posts and due to its insulation properties, it’s usable throughout the year! You no longer only have the option of a dark, dingy wooden building to work from, you now have a clear roof, full glazing front wall, high security door and window locks, to name only a few features. In short, they have helped to create the perfect, inspiring surroundings you need when working from home! Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Global Stone Paving As one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Porcelain Paving and, the first to introduce Porcelain Paving into the UK, Global Stone Paving are delighted to have developed the paving market in a new direction; one that is fit for the demands of 21st Century living. As a market leader they continually like to keep their product offerings fresh and innovative. They do this by keeping track of market trends and they see no signs that the 2016/17 trends for contemporary garden design, increased hard landscaping, and using the outdoor space as an extension of the home, abating. Sales of their porcelain products have taken a massive uplift this year as designers and garden owners recognise how the inherent benefits can meet our desire for both aesthetic pleasure and ease of use. For 2016/17 they are delighted to extend their range further with the introduction of the new Siena Range, available in a new size of 500mm x 1000mm and five different colours. They are also introducing large format project packs, available in two existing colourways, Eldorado and Mocha and a new colour to the range, Crema. Dry-Treat With the right treatment, it’s easy to keep even the most porous natural stone looking great for many years. Treating a porous surface with the right impregnating sealer also makes cleaning easier. Staining is the most common problem affecting porous materials, such as stone paving and steps, but there are other common types of damage. Water can be harmless but if stone or paving is wet for long enough, mold and bacteria can take hold and the material can be softened and weakened. Water also contains minerals (salts) that can leave unsightly residues or stains and even cause major corrosion of pavers and tiles. Dry-Treat’s flagship STAIN-PROOF sealer not only protects natural stone and tiles against stains to keep them looking exceptional, it also maintains the slip resistance of the surface and makes the surface easier to clean, withstanding even commercial pressure sprayers. STAIN-PROOF also protects your porous materials from efflorescence, spalling in saltwater and freeze-thaw environments, and picture framing. Today, STAIN-PROOF protects tens of thousands of homes and many well-known public icons including the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, BBC Scotland headquarters, the Dallas Cowboys stadium, Nirvana Spa UK, city malls, famous hotels and monuments. A 15-year performance warranty is available when STAIN-PROOF is applied by an accredited applicator, although the simple application instructions have made it very popular for DIY use as well. For product information and contact details of Dry-Treat dealers and accredited applicators, visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Wildflower Turf Ltd Standing under the 17-metre-high aluminium installation, The Hive displayed at Kew Royal Botanic Gardens is more than just a sight to be seen. Created by Wolfgang Buttress, Simmonds Studio and BDP, The Hive is a feat of British engineering and formed the centre piece of the UK Pavilion at 2015 Milan Expo. Wolfgang was inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Bencsik of Nottingham Trent University to design the glorious latticed structure. Besides looking incredible, The Hive raises awareness of the steep decline of bees. EU research revealed that 29% of British honey bee colonies died in the 2012/13 winter alone. Pollinating insects are the secret heroes of agriculture and the structure highlights the importance of pollinators to our future food security. Visitors are drawn into The Hive via a lush and vibrant wildflower meadow that Wildflower Turf were delighted to grow for the prestigious project. A mix of Landscape Turf and Border Turf were used within the surrounding garden, with a mix of bright annuals and native perennial wildflowers. The multi-sensory elements of The Hive create an insight into life inside a bee colony. Not only will you hear buzzes and hums around you, hundreds of LED lights glow and fade. The intensity of the light and sound changes as the energy levels in the real beehive serge, creating a sensuous experience. Stark and Greensmith Ltd Founded by Creative Director Martine Le Gassick, Stark and Greensmith is a UK based designer of fence panels and garden dividers for domestic and commercial use. Borne of a frustration with the current restricted range of fencing products available in the UK, they set out to produce fence panels which are strong, long lasting, affordable, and beautiful, requiring practically no maintenance and which outlasts traditional wooden fencing. The panels are made of either weathering steel, which is available pre-weathered or in a natural “raw” finish, or in powder coated aluminium. The panel designs are laser-cut and de-burred for consistency, precision and safety. The panels are affixed by steel clamps to aluminium posts, which themselves are set in concrete, just like traditional fence posts. Aluminium’s resistance to corrosion, and the inherent strength of their boxsection construction means that these posts will stand the test of time. The clamps, posts and end-caps are all powder coated, weather proof and beautiful. They offer 4 designs, available in both materials. Prices start from £250 including VAT for panels, with posts costing £35 including VAT, and clamps £10. They also offer a bespoke service, where they work with you on your projects. They have helped clients with work ranging from garden fencing to detailing on architectural structures, through to gates, pergolas, smoking areas for restaurants and pubs, and other public realm requirements. Please come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Garden Requisites Garden Requisites are looking forward to unveiling their new square planters, troughs and troughs with integral trellis at the LANDSCAPE Show. Each robust, solid steel planter is hand made by Garden Requisites’ team of expert craftsman in their workshops in Bath, Somerset. Beautifully designed, each has a raised base, complete with drainage holes to avoid water-logged roots. The substantial corner legs provide great stability and a handy top rim makes for easy lifting. The trough with integral trellis is the ideal solution for creating divisions or screens within a garden or on a terrace. The trellis panel is available in the traditional diamond woven mesh or the more contemporary square design. These zinc galvanized steel containers are designed to withstand the damaging effects of soil and water, not to mention the infamous British weather. Unlike wood, terracotta, faux lead or fibre-clay planters, they will not crack, rot or crumble, and do not require time-consuming self-assembly. The standard range of Square planters come in four sizes ranging from 40cm to 70cm square, and the troughs start from 90cm wide up to a 130cm wide trough. Virtually maintenance free, these new planters and troughs can be made to measure to suit your requirements. With prices starting at £295 for the Square 40cm Planter and £395 for the 90cm Trough, they represent excellent value for a durable, tasteful solution. Candice Bees Fine Art We recently spoke to Candice about her work, “When I look at a subject, I am not just looking at form, I am looking at behaviour and character. I believe that this is the key to bringing my creations to life.” “I spent many years creating art in 2D using pencil, oils and watercolour to study the diverse animal kingdom. Often I was asked to paint a portrait of someone’s pet. My main request was that I could meet the animal myself. When I met the animal, I was looking for that subtlety of behaviour which was a key identifier to that specific animal. When people saw my completed pieces, the common reaction was I don’t understand, it’s not just any dog / cat / horse, it’s mine. How do you do it?” “Since I discovered the amazing property’s of wire I have been inspired to create in 3D. Once again I have turned to the natural world for inspiration. With wire I have the ability to create fluidity and delicacy without sacrificing form. I have continued studying behaviour and character to ensure that my pieces are truly representational of the subjects. I have now taken on a large studio which has given me the opportunity to create the larger pieces. My current commission is a 2m high tree with a flock of starlings flying through it. Recently I exhibited and sold a sculpture of group of starlings at the Society of Wildlife Artists exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London. Other recent pieces include a life sized whippet and a life sized urban fox. With each creation I am working to ensure that the character of the animal is evident. Unlike bronzes and other cast sculptures, each piece has its’ own unique character which, in turn makes it extra special.” Come and see samples of her work on her stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

David Austin Rose Nursery
David Austin Roses are very pleased to be introducing a wonderful new rose to mark the centenary of the birth of one of our best-loved authors – Roald Dahl ‘Roald Dahl’ is a remarkably free-flowering variety with flowers of a perfect peach colouring. The young buds are a beautiful soft orange-red, the red reminiscent of the blush found on an actual peach. When fully open, they form medium-sized, cupped rosette blooms which are produced almost continuously. Despite their delicate appearance, they are robust enough to withstand even the most inclement weather our climate may throw at them. They have a lovely medium strength Tea fragrance with leafy elements and dark fruit notes. Over time it matures into a very attractive, rounded, bushy shrub with mid-green foliage and few thorns. Overall, this is a charismatic rose that will be a valuable addition to any garden. This variety was named with the approval of Roald Dahl’s wife, Liccy Dahl, as its colouring immediately brought to mind the eponymous peach in James and the Giant Peach, one of Roald Dahl’s best-loved novels. A percentage of the sale from each rose will be donated to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, which helps make life better for seriously ill children in the UK. Come and see it for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Hook-Up Solutions Limited Hooka offers Landscapers and Builders a unique machine for moving bulk materials, a lift and carry crawler. At only 1 metre wide, yet with a lift and carry capacity of 1.5 tonnes, the Hooka has been ‘size matched’ to hard landscaping materials including bulk bags, pallets of blocks, York stone etc. and gives unrivalled delivery performance into restricted access sites. Its rubber tracked base offers outstanding stability combined with ‘turn on the spot’ manoeuvrability without causing ground damage. Additionally, the Hooka makes light work of transporting / installing mature root-ball trees, outdoor sculptures, street furniture, etc. By eliminating barrowing and double handling of materials it significantly reduces the risk of manual handling injuries / claims, as well as providing huge savings on time and labour costs. It also allows waste materials to be stored around the site in bulk bags and moved to kerbside at ‘time of collection’ – removing the need for skips and the hassle of their planning permits. The Hooka’s unique technology enables it to transport materials safely whilst only weighing 1.8 tonnes itself! This means it can be transported easily to site by the HIAB truck at the same time as your material delivery, or towed behind a 4x4 on a standard plant trailer. Hooka has already won favour with the Canals Trust, as well as Kier construction and Vinci PLC. Come and see it for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

With natural tropic looks, Trex Transcend comes in a variety of shades including grey finishes (Island Mist), streaked matt finish and tropical light grey.
Probst Handling Equipment Probst Handling Equipment have been a supplier of materials handling equipment within the UK for 30 years, their equipment is manufactured at their head office in Germany, and has been in operation for over 50 years. Over this time they have become a trusted name for quality products- their range of items include: Landscaping and block paving equipment, vacuum systems, mechanical grabs, hydraulic grabs, all of which are used primarily for the lifting of concrete products. The traditional method to screed a sand or grit bed, is for someone to be on their hands and knees, and use a cut length of timber to level this bed before laying the concrete/ stone product on top. They have another way of doing this, which allows you to be stood up. The easy plan screed system is an extendable metal screed profile, with a handle which the operative holds on to, and pulls the screed back to level the bed. The benefits of this system are: no more kneeling down in damp sand, you can extend the screed profile to suit different size areas, the excess sand or grit, is gathered inside the profile, thus helping to compact the bed. Come and see them on the Probst stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

EsthecÂŽ Terrace A sophisticated appearance and exceedingly strong material: the high quality system of Esthec Terrace is incomparable with systems made of wood or other composite products. Esthec Terrace is made of fibreglass reinforced composite which makes it much stronger and extremely durable. With its distinctive product advantages Esthec Terrace is applied worldwide in gardens of private homes and terraces at hotels, resorts and beach clubs. Esthec Terrace is also used for balconies, roof terraces, jetties and as decking material around swimming pools and in outdoor spa areas. The terrace is resistant to different weather conditions and is easy to maintain. In addition, Esthec Terrace is extremely wear resistant. The lightweight and indestructible material does not warp like PVC or wood, does not splinter and is comfortable to walk on with bare feet. Esthec Terrace does not absorb water. That is why the material will keep a clean appearance and will not be affected by algae and bacteria. No absorption of water also means that the terrace system remains slip resistant in wet conditions. Whereas wood can quickly become slippery in rainy weather, Esthec Terrace provides excellent grip. Esthec Terrace can be used in shaded areas without any problems. For architects and landscape gardeners Esthec Terrace offers several functional properties. The material provides the highest level of design freedom, because there are no limits in design and colour. Esthec Terrace is available in 7 colours, but also custom made colours are available, providing unlimited design opportunities. Due to the computer-controlled processing, the designs end result is known in advance. Come and see the range for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Second Life Products Ltd Second Life Products Wales Ltd are a leading manufacturer and National distributor of 100% recycled plastic products. In 1999, SLPW began the manufacture of their commercial furniture range, offering their long term maintenance free recycled benches and tables throughout the UK. SLPW were being asked for a rigid 8 x 4 (2.240 x 1.220m) sheet/panel product and so then decided to expand their range further by introducing an environmentally friendly plywood alternative to the UK market. EKOply turns waste plastics into 8ft by 4ft sheets, and has been developed as the economically viable alternative to plywood or virgin plastic panels currently available in the UK- with each sheet made entirely from waste plastic that would have ended up at landfill. The EKOply product works well in fabrication and has now been used for a wide variety of applications including construction, living walls, outdoor furniture and marine use - and if required EKOply can also continue to be used alongside traditional materials such as wood, plywood and PVC. The introduction of the new anti-slip surface and coloured sheet range, together with the new range of recycled profiles, decking profiles and ground edging products, ensures that SLPW can meet the needs of the green projects of today. By choosing these quality recycled products and choosing the environmentally friendly option, purchase and on-going costs can be substantially reduced. Trans-European Stone Ltd
Belgian Blue limestone was selected by Tamburlaine Gorst and his wife Sandra Choi (Creative Director of Jimmy Choo) to create a unique table in the garden of their home in Gloucester. The table top which measures 2200 x 900 x 45mm and weighs 300kg was supplied by Trans-European Stone and is set atop two reclaimed sections of Falmouth Pier. With such a distinguished base the limestone table top had to undergo a meticulous process to create an Antique finish in keeping with its surroundings. The finished table looks stunning in the context of their picturesque garden. Tamburlaine Gorst said: “It has been a real pleasure to work with Trans-European Stone developing a Blue Limestone table top. Dirk in particular was very responsive to the brief and then very reactive in sampling until the desired finish was developed. I was very surprised at how quickly this happened once the go-ahead was given. The end result is a table top that looks beautifully authentically antique- just as we wanted it. Belgian Blue is available in a multitude of finishes and is ideal for table tops, benches and all hard landscaping applications. Contact Trans-European Stone for further information on their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show in September to see what Belgian Blue limestone could bring to your next project.

Squareroot Planters Squareroot Planters began developing a range of clever interchangeable planting systems nearly 10 years ago, and coming from a product design and engineering background has always embraced a challenge when solving site specific problems or general product innovations. Abandoning wood in favour of aluminium to deliver life time durability and dramatically reduce weight took the planters into a different league, particularly for roof terraces where loading calculations became an issue. No two sites or jobs are ever the same and when it comes to truly bespoke work involving gradient slopes, staggered walls and access for maintenance issues, Squareroot have the technology, the engineering skills and years of experience. A recently completed job on a Kensington roof terrace meant that valuable floor space was gained enabling the owners to have a table and chairs in their confined outside space as well as an extensive planting scheme. This was possible by utilising the low walls and railing plinths to accommodate the bespoke planters. As well as an extensive survey, Squareroot provided 3D CAD visuals showing various design options as well as incorporating variations in floor level for drainage etc. The computer model was then transferred into Squareroot’s manufacturing facility ensuring a first time fit everytime. Squareroot is currently working on a similar project in Southern France where a sloping site, specific planting requirements and the strict local vernacular were all part of the design process. Squareroot has its own in-house design, manufacturing, spray painting, delivery and installation facility in the UK so that every project is nurtured through all stages of its development. Oxford Planters Ltd Oxford Planters have worked in collaboration with Andrew Fisher Tomlin to design and develop their exquisite new Stud Collection which is now a “Product of The Year” finalist for RHS Chelsea. The collection was designed after Andrew observed the wet weather contributing to an outbreak of slugs and snails in a number of his gardens. Using copper strips around planters is a traditional solution for discouraging slugs and snails but Andrew wanted something that was integrated into a stylish planter and furniture range. As well as designing the planter collection Andrew met with Oxford Planters’ craftsmen to discuss the very best timber to create a longlasting sustainable system. Accoya® & Medite®Tricoya®Extreme were chosen because the performance of both materials to outperform most natural hardwoods and which are 100% sustainable. Streetlife BV The grand opening of Park Nauerna has recently taken place in Assendelft. Streetlife provided several benches and pedestrian bridges for the Dutch town’s new green public space. The new park was built on a landfill site managed by waste management company Afvalzorg that had become redundant. The site is set to be transformed into a 60-hectare nature and recreation park in three stages. The grand opening celebrated the first 12 hectares as ready for public use. For the project, Streetlife provided R&R Curve Benches, R&R Circular Benches and a Solo CorTen Bridge. All products are equipped with All Black beams. All Black is a compound of recycled plastics (polyethylene and polypropylene) with a rough texture that takes its name from the fact that it retains its colour throughout a structure. This extremely durable and environmentallyfriendly construction material has a long life and is maintenance-free. Ink and paint have a hard time adhering to All Black and cannot penetrate into it. UV stabilisation also allows it to permanently retain its black colour. The combination of All Black beams with CorTen or galvanized steel give the Streetlife products an even sturdier, more robust appearance. The names engraved on the All Black backrests of the R&R Circular Bench will serve as a permanent reminder of the driving forces behind the park’s creation. With the construction of the park, waste management company Afvalzorg is giving the area back to the community. Plans for this ultra-sustainable park came about in an active project group involving stakeholders from the local area. Park Nauerna will be expanded in phases over the next few years with Streetlife contributing more products to the project. Schellevis Beton BV
Being voted runner up in the SGD’s product of the year award at last year’s LANDSCAPE Show was especially pleasing for Schellevis, having launched in the UK only eighteen months earlier. But while September’s event is firmly in sight, much closer on the horizon is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this month, where Schellevis are once again hoping to win awards. Schellevis commissioned designer Sarah Naybour to create their stand. The layout is split level featuring two contrasting outdoor spaces where the versatility, style and character of Schellevis paving and landscaping elements fit beautifully. The first is an urban landscape inspired by the plans for Battersea Power Station, the second a private residential garden. The lower level will be a loosely planted contemporary gravel garden with a scattering of Schellevis planks leading to giant 1m x 1m cantilever steps set into the edge of the upper terrace. On one of these sits a life size wire figure with copper wire hair, created by British artist Rachel Ducker. Put to various uses in the two areas, the paving’s extensive natural colour palette, unique broken Basalt finish and wide range of formats enable it to connect and define the tiers with effortless effect and maximum impact. So the atmosphere on the upper level will be very different. Minimal and laid out on a grid, it features the new cube seating from Schellevis, used as a plinth for another sculpture. Smaller Schellevis pavers in a chequer board pattern will clad the back wall, with laser cut rusted steel panels in a twig pattern. See Schellevis at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show or visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Thermory by Round Wood of Mayfield Round Wood of Mayfield have recently introduced a range of eco-friendly, thermo treated timber products, including decking boards that are particularly suited to high end, contemporary projects. As part of the Thermory® collection, which also features cladding and flooring, these decking boards have been cut from ash and spruce sourced from responsibly managed forests in both North America and Europe. The thermo treatment process they have undergone is chemical free and transforms the timber, giving it a durability that rivals that of tropical hardwoods. Thermo-treatment takes place in computer controlled kilns. Finished timber profiles are heated and steamed at temperatures of up to 215°C in order to reduce moisture content, remove resins and bake out the natural sugars that can cause decay. The end result is a decking board with outstanding dimensional stability and a deep, luxurious colour throughout. Decking boards are currently available in both ash and spruce 118mm wide boards, with a smooth face both sides. A training bursary has been created at Thrive thanks to a touching and generous donation in the name of the late Charles Notcutt who passed away last year aged 81. Mr Notcutt, OBE, was an inspirational and popular leader of the horticultural community and was instrumental in the rapid growth of the family firm, Notcutts. The Charles Notcutt Memorial Bursary was launched in January 2016 to enable five students to complete Thrive’s Award in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture. More than 50 people applied and Thrive shortlisted ten excellent candidates – in light of that Notcutts agreed to fund all ten places. Thrive is the leading charity in the UK that uses gardening to help people living with disabilities or ill health, or those who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable, at their four regional centres and in the community, by using plants and gardening to bring positive changes to their lives. If you have ever marvelled at the beauty of a flower, felt that sense of excitement, then satisfaction as your seedlings start to grow or feel refreshed and rejuvenated after a long walk in nature, then you have directly experienced some of the founding principles that have given rise to the profession of social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) which Thrive is the leading authority on in the UK. As well as helping hundreds of people each year, the charity plays an important role in training people from a wide range of backgrounds, including health, social care and horticulture or people who are looking for a new career. Perennial The Immerse garden, designed by first-time show garden designer Cherry Carmen and built and sponsored by Living Landscapes, was awarded a Silver Medal at the world’s largest annual flower show on 4 July 2016. To honour Perennial’s involvement in the project, the charity’s Royal Patron HRH Princess Alexandra, KG, GCVO, visited the garden on Monday 4 July to meet the team and hear all about it. Vertology Living Walls Whenever there is chaos and stress we need somewhere to retreat to and gardens have always been a haven against the everincreasing stresses of life. Yet in urban areas, outdoor space is at a premium and becoming ever more scarce. Putting your garden on the wall in addition, or even instead, of on the horizontal makes a lot of sense. Small courtyards, light-wells and roof terraces quickly become filled with plants that make them beautiful but leave no space for people! Planting vertically solves this issue. Vertology living walls use their own unique hydroponic technology to deliver superior greening into precious outdoor or indoor space, creating a green oasis of calm that enhances the biophilic connection to Nature, increases urban biodiversity, dampens sound, removes air pollutants and insulates buildings. A comprehensive knowledge of plants, their combination and layout is just as essential on a wall as it is on the ground, so vertical gardening should be all about plant knowledge and design; but these qualities are too often neglected when creating a living wall. Mark Laurence, Vertology’s MD has been a landscape designer for 35 years and has designed some iconic living walls both in the UK and abroad. Vertology work with designers and contractors in the UK and licenses its systems out to reputable companies internationally. Visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September to find out how they can work with you.

Sonomuro, a Belgian company, is bringing its new DecoWall range of products to the UK. They are decorative landscaping gabion fences filled with pebble stones. Next to this new range, Sonomuro is offering a range of Sonowalls, sound-fences for the residential market. The DecoWall Gabion Fence panels are as high as a traditional fence, but with only 4cm of width, the gabion system is more elegant and takes up less space than traditional gabions requiring tons of stones to fill.
“We are bringing the gabion in an elegant and refined format for use in landscaping projects where mineral elements are added to create contemporary gardens”, says Michel Corbett, Sonomuro’s Managing Director. “Instead of filling your traditional gabion with larger stones, the pebbles used in the DecoWall makes gabions look much more modern and elegant in a landscaping project than a traditional gabion cage.” Come and see their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Glendining HighwaysLimited At Glendining Parks & Drives they specialise in both resin bound and resin bonded surfaces ideal for a wide variety of applications. As both of these surfaces are aesthetically pleasing and customisable with a range of aggregates, they are popular for locations where their appearance is important. One of the most popular locations for their resin bound or resin bonded surface options are council-operated parks and green spaces in London where their resin paths have been a key feature of the landscape. Also urban and green-space tree pits where this resin bound aggregate system provides a surface which is attractive and highly porous , as the open matrix allows water to pass through , draining to planted areas or land drains. As Glendining carry out works for all the major house builders all of their surfaces are SuDs compliant, reducing the impact of urban development on flood risk and allowing water to flow into water courses. They are familiar with and use a wide variety of decorative aggregates and are more than happy to advise on the use of resin bonded or resin bound surfaces in your project. As resin surfaces require a good quality base to lay on, they can advise on any preparation works that will be necessary. Parks and green-spaces play an important role in the health and happiness of the local community, and at Glendining they continue to strive to make this a reality for all our towns and cities. Faith Ramsay Naomi House and Jack’s Place is a hospice and respite centre for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions based near Winchester. Having been open for over 15 years, the Trustees took the decision in 2014 to completely refurbish and extend Naomi House. During this process the existing gardens were either built on or damaged. Faith Ramsay of My Country Garden Design Solutions was asked to design three new garden spaces to accompany the new hospice. These included a Children’s Garden which encouraged the children themselves to come outdoors and play with their siblings and families, as well as allowing for passive and reflective enjoyment of the garden. This space had to be flexible enough to allow for play by very active siblings and inclusive enough to allow engagement by children of all physical and mental abilities. It included roundabouts and swings, water play, sand play and sensory planters encouraging the children to touch, feel and smell the plantings. It included shaded and quiet spaces as well as multi-textured hard landscaping to allow sight-deprived children to identify their place in the garden. The whole design was based on a circular theme reflecting ones journey through life and the horseshow nature of the hospice itself. This leant itself to the combination of land, beach and sea areas reflected through the hard surfacing and play areas and leading to a fantastic bespoke dual entrance/exit multi-level wooden galleon. In addition, Faith was asked to design a private garden that was for the exclusive use of the families with a child using the End of Life suite. This garden was originally intended to be for the families and siblings to use to be able to access a tranquil and healing space at a time of great distress. However, on consultation with staff and families, the design was amended to allow the child themselves on their bed to also be able to be brought out into the garden. Recognising that gardens have a part to play even at the end of our days. This garden had to be accessible at all times of year and day and night and incorporated light and water features to ensure this. Faith is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen to her talk about Designing for Therapeutic Gardens at 1pm on Wednesday 14th.

Kingcombe Aquacare Kingcombe Aquacare have been designing, creating and maintaining water features of all types for nearly 30 years. Landmark projects include the Glasshouse Lake at RHS Wisley and the UK’s only public natural swimming pool at Kings Cross, London. Water play parks or ‘Splash Pads’ were a real feature of 2015 for Kingcombe Aquacare. They built 8 new parks in conjunction with Sun Safe Play in various locations open to the public around the UK. Every park has been a resounding success, and an investment that has proved to be a wise move. One client saw an increase of 40% in visitor numbers over a two month period following construction of their splash pad. 2016 is set to be the same with two orders already secured. The first project in Nottinghamshire is due to start in mid April with another soon after. Kingcombe/SSP splash pads are interesting, fun and of course safe for use. Children (and big children) absolutely love them and the range of interactive features available provide hours of fun. The water treatment systems are designed to ensure they fall in line with strict PWTAG recommendations. A straightforward and robust maintenance regime keeps the feature at its best year on year. Charlie Bloom We spoke recently to Charlie Bloom, one of this years featured speakers at the LANDSCAPE Show. She said, “As a recreational side line I like to produce Show Gardens for National Shows, with three RHS medals so far. Shows are the polar opposite of my day to day work, which has long term goals and requires patience. Show gardens are pieces of theatre and only need to last a few weeks, this allows me to produce gardens that exist just to entertain the public and show off a few of my more zany ideas. Including a 1980’s Silver Spirit Rolls Royce and a Mad Hatters Tea Party.“ “I would encourage anyone interested in horticulture to design a show garden, it isn’t just for big names, but is a forum to promote good causes, team work and small business and large budgets aren’t necessary to create an exhibit that has some meaning or purpose. All of my gardens have been the result of a beg, borrow and steal philosophy and a team of people who are passionate about horticulture and creating an exhibit to be proud of.“ “I hope to continue designing for national shows, in my attempt to promote understanding of autism and Aspergers awareness and to prove that small budgets, but big enthusiasm can compete with the big boys. Watch this space...“ Come and listen to Charlie as part of our Seminar programme at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer A disease that mainly affects young people, for which there is still no cure, is under the spotlight with a show garden at the world’s largest flower show and designers Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Dan Bowyer will make a rare show garden appearance at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this summer in order to highlight it Of the 3000 to 6000 cases diagnosed each year, one in six sufferers of Crohn’s Disease are under 16 years old. A life-long condition, and for some life-threatening, treatment is expensive and becomes more complicated over time. Though, with the right care, it is a condition that a person can live with. This city garden for a young Crohn’s sufferer aims to engage visitors with its unexpected planting scheme and colour palette. It tells the story of how vital and vibrant a young person’s life can be even with this terrible disease. The pair are using hardy exotics, alongside British native plants, in a way that will challenge conventional show garden planting schemes and palettes. They hope it will encourage gardeners to rethink their plant choices given the impact of climate change. The garden’s canopy of tree ferns, its jungle-like plants and traditional ground foliage demonstrate a design approach for our warming cities. Cool tropical plants, chosen for their foliage and colour – and not for their short-lived flowers - appeal to a younger gardener. Hardy exotics like a Butia Yatay Palm, tree ferns, canna and ginger lilies sit with English native ferns and hostas in the shady and sunny parts of the garden. The bright blue steel pool and the misters, which bring drama and add a tropical touch, reinforce the importance of hydration to bowel health. The gastrointestinal shaped, precision-cut, stone path and fire-pit allude to where Crohn’s strikes and what it can feel like. It is no coincidence that individuals associated with the charity are advocates of the therapeutic properties of gardens and gardening. Charity founder Gary Douch, who has Crohn’s Disease, relaxes in his family garden; trustee Professor Devinder Kumar, a leading bowel disease surgeon and consultant, is a proficient gardener and Andrew Fisher Tomlin designs active horticultural therapy landscapes. Over 10 suppliers have made generous donations of plants, materials and a unique humidity system for the more unusual shade plants. The charity will work hard to make sure the garden goes on to raise funds for the appeal. If the garden is not bought at the show it will be relocated to a private garden and become a fundraiser for an event later in the year.

Tom Massey The UNHCR ‘Border Control’ Garden - is a conceptual show garden appearing at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show - 5th-10th July 2016. Designed by Tom Massey in collaboration with John Ward, built by Landform Consultants and sponsored by the charity UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency - the garden highlights the current refugee crisis and the desperate risks many people take to find shelter. A beautiful, fertile and tranquil island of seemingly native British planting sits across a treacherous moat bordered by razor wire fencing. Outside the fence, struggling amongst rubble, starved of nutrients and water, non-native plants fight to survive, desperate to reach the protected island. As visitors approach, their view is from the non-native refugees’ perspective, a land full of danger, despair and suffering with only glimpses of the sanctuary beyond. However, dispersed amongst the rubble, surviving against the odds, a number of beautiful non-native plants shine, colourful displays of strength and hope in the face of adversity. Inside the garden a path runs under a traditional wooden gazebo, taking visitors through the space. The physical structure represents sanctuary and shelter. At first glance the central planting appears to be a traditional British wildflower meadow, but on closer inspection, many of the plants from the outer zone have made it across, integrated amongst the native wildflowers, blending in, harmonising and adding to the overall beauty of the fertile sanctuary. Inside the garden the visitor is enveloped in a lush and beautiful oasis; but how much can this beauty truly be appreciated when surrounded by the suffering beyond? Nilufer Danis The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and Turkish Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Union (OAiB) recent show garden aims to provide inspiration and ideas for city designers, planners and home owners showing what can be done to turn the cities where we live into truly Green Cities. The AIPH/OAiB Green Oasis garden is based on ‘Green City ’concepts and spans 1045m2. The aim of the design is to demonstrate the value of ‘living green’ in cities and encourage investment in sustainable green spaces. The garden includes 21 trees, water fountains, a green roof, a rain garden, a pool, pathways, solar panels, sculptures, a planted table and insect hotels. The green roof lessens the urban heat island effect as well as capturing particulates and pollutants in the air, producing oxygen and providing insulation to enable energy saving. Solar panels on the top of the building absorb the sun’s rays to generate electricity.
The rain garden provides sustainable drainage to prevent flooding and storm water runoff and the planted table enables food to grow right where you eat it! The table includes a mix of edible green plants and fruit to encourage healthier and more sustainable living, demonstrating a way to grow food at your own home. The insect hotels promote biodiversity providing place for hibernating insects like ladybirds and butterflies. The permeable paving surface allows the movement of storm water through the surface and reduces water runoff. Tree planting provides a habitat for wildlife and helps cool the air, reducing the so called ‘heat island effect’. The proposed planting scheme contains the exported plants from Antalya to the world to promote international plants growers. The garden was designed by Nilufer Danis from Lotus Designs who will be one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at Perennial comments: “We are delighted to be working with Frederic and Darran to create a garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2016 that highlights the work we do. None of the wonderful show gardens would be possible without the skilled horticulturists, growers and everyone else in the profession involved in creating them. Perennial exists to support all of those people if ever they face difficult times. Thanks go to Frederic and Darran for leading by example and generously promising a gift to Perennial in their wills. Legacy donations form a large and hugely important part of our charitable income and all gifts of whatever size will make a difference to our future.” This will be Suffolk-based Frederic Whyte’s third garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and he is also creating his third show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year.
