The Garden Trellis Company With a recent project in Central London, The Garden Trellis Company gave insight in to how a bespoke trellis and planter scheme can create a highly distinctive, private and desirable living area. The original building just off Eaton Square is overlooked by other buildings; therefore the client was keen to add some privacy to the terrace using trellis on top of walls which would allow climbing plants to grow for a softer, more attractive environment. They first undertook a site visit to discuss the ideas and vision that the client had already developed for the terrace. From this they produced an outline design and quotation to put forward to the client. Then with a second site visit they carried out a thorough survey from which they could accurately draw the scheme and offer a firm quotation and timescale. The project was completed with classic trellis and a planter scheme that allowed plants to grow up the trellis. Each planter had a simple but very effective moulding design to the front face. Although not strictly a ‘rooftop’ terrace, this unusual development gave the opportunity to create an attractive outdoor living area on a flat roof extension from the main building. Check more of their ideas at their stand at this year’s LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park.

AIPH
Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our world for the future. Hedges Direct Ltd
Trading online for over 10 years, Hedges Direct is a specialist supplier of hedging, turf, pleached trees, living screens and topiary. With decades of experience in the horticultural industry and a culture firmly focused on quality and service, they are able to supply specimen plants for any size project, all with an industry leading delivery turnaround. In recent weeks, the product sourcing team at Hedges Direct has taken the opportunity to visit the extensive network of growers both in the UK and Europe. It’s a time to catch up with their existing suppliers to strengthen relationships and to meet with potential new suppliers. This is an opportunity to extend or revitalise their product lines and ensure the highest quality specimen plants for their clients. The team were particularly interested in extending Hedges Direct ranges of the more specialist plants that they sell, namely topiary and pleached trees, which are becoming increasingly popular in the design-led landscaping community. Both types of plants offer a high-end styling and architectural interest to many gardens, urban or rural, with pleached trees in particular now being popular as high level living walls, creating a natural privacy screen with colour and texture in place of an extended fence or wall. The team were also highly impressed by their stock of large, field-grown root ball hedging plants currently being cultivated by our growers. To find out more about their products, visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park.

APL
The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. The rigorous inspection process to join is the toughest within the industry. Along with the initial inspection, each member is inspected annually to ensure each member has up to date insurances, complies with health and safety law and their quality of work is to the highest possible. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. Over 330 APL members and representatives from across the landscaping industry came together for the APL Awards held at The Brewery in London in March where the work of members was celebrated in style. Many congratulations to all those award winners. It is not too late to enter this the 2018 Awards as the deadline has been extended to the end of May 2017. Don’t miss out on this opportunity and find out more at www.aplawards.co.uk APL are once again looking forward to being part of the LANDSCAPE Show in September and seeing you there to discuss how you can become part of the APL Community. Heseltine Design Heseltine Design have built a strong reputation for producing innovative solutions for their customer’s needs, helping architects, garden designers, contractors, and private clients to achieve their aims on a range of projects. Initially designed for The National Arboretum at Westonbirt the ‘Fann Picnic Table’ has been chosen repeatedly for the spectrum of advantages it has over conventional picnic tables. Made from durable PEFC Douglas Fir and stainless steel the ‘all in one’ freestanding design is fanned in profile providing easy access at the wide end and more comfort for children at the narrow end. The ground level cross bars enable use by anyone, and the large table overhang at the end is for socially inclusive wheelchair use. The maintenance free design can be bolted down for security and arranged in interesting formats when used in multiples. They will have a range of designs on show at LANDSCAPE and they look forward to discussing your future projects on their stand this September at Battersea Park.

Arboricultural Association As the leading voice on all matters arboricultural in the UK, the AA provides a home and membership for all those employed within the sector; championing the sustainable management of trees in places where people live work and play – for the benefit of society. We provide the standards, training, support and recognition that put our members - in the UK and overseas - at the peak of their profession.
Sultan Nurseries New to the LANDSCAPE Show this year, Sultan Nurseries were founded in 1971 in North Algeria. In the beginning their activity focused on the production of rare species of ornamental plants and rare fruit trees. They found that there was a lack of some species such as rare Holland roses and yellow Geraniums. So, they imported them from China. Fortunately this partnership with the Chinese was a great success, providing Sultan Nurseries with excellent seeds.
We support the LANDSCAPE Show as we strongly believe in collaborating with our partner organisations as part of our vision. The LANDSCAPE Show are also an important member of the All Party Parliamentary Group, helping us to lobby MPs to recognise the importance of our industries. We look forward to meeting members and possible new members at this years event.
It is down to both this partnership with the Chinese and their plant engineers that has meant the product has succeeded in the Mediterranean climate. These flowers have now achieved self-sufficiency in the Mediterranean climate. The goal of Sultan Nurseries is to produce rare species, and enrich the environment by the beautiful diversity of the plants. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Taylor Made Planters So four years on and over 50,000 people visiting the pop up beach each year down at the famous Newcastle quayside, NE1 decided to revamp and improve the quayside seaside. NE1’s award winning pocket park programme, is now bigger and better with more beach extending to 250 square metres of sand and decking and the introduction of 5 hand crafted beach huts, a boat front with a boat themed climbing frame and a large stage area. Also ten 1400sq Versailles planters for 10m high palm trees. Robinson Landscapes was handed the task of creating something bigger and better than the previous years, so who better to come to than Taylor Made Planters. With experience of fabricating the previous project and working hand in hand to ensure that everything fitted down to the last mm they had their work cut out. After scrutinising the design and improving features they had something solid to work from and soon got to work. Taylor Made Planters then had the task of installing this mammoth project within a tight deadline ensuring it opened on time. The end result is something they are extremely proud of. Come and see examples from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Atech SAS The Levitating Forest is a monumental interior landscape that symbolizes the gateway to the city of Angers and its region. This project is supported by main local economic network: the city of Angers, Végépolys, the University of Angers, Agrocampus west, the national institute of Agronomic research and the International Centre for Agronomic Research for Development. In full respect of the drawing by Alexis Tricoire, artist and designer of the project, this work perfectly reflects the image of Angers and its region. This project is a real technical challenge, which, besides the aesthetic aspect, opens the door to research and studies on the behaviour of the plant in constrained and suspended environment. Five trees satellised by luminous rings, float 5 meters high along the glass facade of the station. At night, this scintillating nature in levitation, gives a new radiation of the station in its urban landscape. On the outer court, two satellites landed to transform into sitting furniture to provide users with spaces of comfort and friendliness. Each 3-meterdiameter satellite weighing one ton is made of brushed stainless steel, including polycarbonate light windows. Three types of lighting, ribbons and led spots in the rings and under-framed spots constitute the luminous covering of each satellite and help the growth of the plants. This project is a prime example of their philosophy which focuses on the importance of introducing nature into urban areas. For further examples from their designs come see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Stone Wood Service Ltd As we know being surrounded by natural materials has proven health benefits and positively affects everyone’s wellbeing. Wood is a natural product; it is one of the most commonly used raw materials in construction work and is incredibly strong when properly treated. One of their wooden gazebos has the potential to completely transform your garden. It is the ideal place to spend time in, its unique atmosphere generating calm and a place for reflection. Their wooden gazebos are made from the highest quality raw materials, making them brilliant protection from wind and rain. They are made exclusively from wood cut from coniferous trees (pine, spruce) which have grown in carefully tended European forests. Before use, the wood undergoes an extensive drying process, which results in the wood splitting less and losing a lot of its natural moisture. Its moisture content after such a process constitutes for approximately 15- 18%. Depending on customer preference, the wood is then impregnated or coated with specializing paint to maximize durability or change the appearance and feel of the wood according to your taste. Roofing shingles available in 4 colors gives additional charm and makes the gazebo attract the eyes. Gazebo is a great addition to a backyard garden, pub, restaurant or park giving shelter from the burning sun or heavy rain They are ideal for spending a moment of solitary calm and a unique and memorable place to entertain guests, in late Summer evenings and then throughout the rest of the year. Biomatrix Water Solutions Ltd
Modular floating gardens open up a whole new range of possibilities for water feature design. Biomatrix Water is an ecological technology company that has developed and applied this technology in a wide range of projects worldwide. The modules are produced in their workshop and assembled, installed and planted on site. As they come in differently shaped components and each can be combined, almost any island shape is possible. The islands can be free floating, form archipelagos or can be anchored to the water’s edge to form a green floating riverbank. In this way, wildlife habitat and green space can be created in former lifeless, concrete-lined water features. The aquatic plants that cover the floating islands play an active role in managing and improving the water quality through the microorganisms in their roots. They have also developed a dynamic biofilter media; columns of root-like material hanging underneath the islands that greatly increase the habitat for microorganisms. In this way, their floating islands effectively tackle pollution and algae. Severely polluted water can be treated using their Active Island Reactor system, a floating water treatment system which provides enhanced natural processes to improve water quality. Biomatrix have worked with clients in a wide range of urban settings to provide effective solutions to challenges of water pollution and habitat degradation that areas around the world are faced with today. The team at Biomatrix Water enjoy engaging with diverse challenges, and are passionate about providing solutions that bring water to life. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

All Sorted All Sorted are a dynamic design team of interior decorators and plantscapers. As a company that takes its commitment to sustainability seriously, All Sorted were eager to assume the task of providing and installing the planters for this energy-saving building. A variety of trough planters were used throughout the building to achieve the modern, exciting and eco-friendly design the client was looking for. The trough planters used in the building were manufactured from aluminium. Aluminium is a recyclable product and utilized on these products had over 50% recycled aluminium content. Additionally, aluminium is a durable, cost-effective material and allows for a variety of different finish options. The building required a large amount of indoor plants to combat the CO2 emissions, creating a peaceful working environment. Trough planters, in an assortment of sizes and finishes, were strategically placed to achieve this look and feel. Medium-sized, pale blue and white powder coated troughs were used against wooden divider walls in the canteen areas, creating a balance between ‘natural’ and ‘modern’. Larger brushed aluminium troughs were placed in the lobby area, in front of a neutral grey wall to create contrast. Shorter white troughs were also used throughout the building’s hallways and offices while the boardroom made use of satin-finish planters against a stone wall. This ensured a constant balance of eco-friendly design and aesthetically pleasing looks was important in this project and resulted in a calm and peaceful corporate environment. All Sorted have other products including litter bins, benches, water features, tree protection and cigarette bins, all stylish, versatile and long-lasting. Come see more from their range at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park.

Harrod Horticultural
One of Harrod Horticulture’s areas of specialist expertise is a water feature design – they understand the science and behaviour of water, what pumps and valves to use along with water chemistry – including filtration, chemical treatment and corrosive interaction. This recent project for James Basson - Scape Design down in Provence showcases their ability to turn a concept into a fully realised, reliable and low maintenance feature. They were initially approached with a vision for a feature inspired by the historic maze-like network of irrigation canals in the area, scaled for this courtyard location. Taking this outline concept they were able to supply a full set of 3D CAD models which were essential for visualisation and communication to all involved - including clients, their in house fabrication team, designer, installation team and maintenance contractor. Hydraulic circuits were designed with consideration of flow rates along with practical considerations such as maintenance, drain down, ease of installation, levelling, debris, leaf foundation were all included in the design process. A failure mode and effects analysis was carried out as routine to identify any potential catastrophic failure modes and physical models were built to test assumptions about water flow rates and gain clients approval before manufacture. The troughs were manufactured from 8mm steel, laser cut, folded then welded. Much skill is required to prevent such large sections of steel bowing or distorting during welding. The project was delivered on time and on budget. If you want to ask them more about their projects come and see them at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park.

IFLA Trans-European Stone Ltd Are you considering natural stone paving, feature wall, bench, table or water feature? Using Trans European Stones Belgian Blue limestone is atheistically, ethically and morally one of the best choices all round. Architects Rolfe Judd specified Belgian Blue limestone rather than black granite imported from Asia or Africa on AMSPROP (Alan Sugar’s Property development business) multi-million-pound redevelopment of Alderman’s House, in the City of London. Benefits included it’s Anti-Slavery Compliance; as the subcontractor sourced the Belgian blue limestone directly from the quarry. With such a direct supply chain, the project team were certain that no bonded or child labour was involved anywhere in the quarrying, manufacturing or transportation of the Belgian Blue stone. Belgium is part of the E.U. and therefore subject to the same EUwide labour laws regulating working conditions as here in the U.K., both the client and the project team are further assured that by using Belgian Blue stone rather than black granite, their Anti-Slavery policies would not be compromised. It also had a lower carbon footprint as the Trans European Belgian Blue quarry is just 228miles from the site in Liverpool Street. This is just 75 miles further than the Portland stone used directly above it, and 75 miles closer than the Cumbrian red sandstone quarry used extensively on the upper floors. With a porosity of just 0.36% and density of 2.7kg/m3, Belgian stone is also known as ‘Petit Granite’ because it’s performance is so similar to most granites.

British natural stone paving is in one of the top leagues - the variety of tones, textures and colours will look at home in any landscape scheme from cottage stepping stones to palatial terraces. They specialise in Purbeck Limestone and York sandstone paving, flagstones and slabs for domestic and commercial flooring and landscaping. NEW to their extensive range is Purbeck Estate Paving which has dressed edges and a combination of smooth and textured surfaces. Available in mixed colours from light beige to grey/blue the subtle tonal variation of this Purbeck slab is perfect for external use and well-suited to country properties. York Riven stone paving and flagstones are popular choices for those seeking a natural, more rustic look. The rough and uneven finish with a dressed edge is created when stones are skilfully cleft by hand along their thin bed layer. These stone slabs are ideal for patios and terraces, their natural shade variation blending with the landscape. Aside from external paving they also draw on a wide range of British sandstones and limestone’s to supply finished products for flooring and walling including cladding, traditional cobbles, setts, pavers and flagstones. They can also supply structural landscape products such as rockery stone, landscape boulders and gravel along with small block which can be used for bank retention. For more details please come and meet the team on their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

ILP
The Institution of Lighting Professionals is an open and collaborative organisation that works proactively with architects, interior designers and specifiers to integrate quality lighting into the built environment. We promote best practice by uniting the skills of engineering, design and technology to deliver great spaces for people. Visit www.theilp.org.uk for more information. We are supporting the LANDSCAPE show because we promote excellence in all forms of lighting one area including lighting landscapes. Our publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ gives guidance on implementing successful lighting within the public realm. It starts from one basic premise – that public space, is a crucial component of successful, well functioning towns and cities in which people can work, relax and socialise in a harmonious manner. But at the same time, even the best-designed public squares, parks, pedestrian areas and gardens, which may be havens of sociability or serenity by day, can become unprepossessing, and even threatening, places after dark. One major aim of our guide is to inspire those responsible for commissioning and funding to recognise the numerous benefits of good landscape lighting and put such lighting at the centre of the design of new or refurbished urban spaces, parks and gardens. Visit www.theilp.org.uk/resources/ ilp-general-reports/lighting-landscapes/ for more details.

VC Garden Design
Starting a new career can be a daunting prospect but for Victoria it was a couple of chance encounters that really got things going. She very quickly found herself working freelance with two separate designers based in the Tunbridge Wells area who helped ensure that the transition from the classroom to the studio was a rewarding experience. This success was swiftly followed by winning an SGD Award in the Student Domestic category at the beginning of the year. She now collaborates with local architects and artisans on a range of commissions and finds that there is no shortage of people seeking help to improve their outdoor spaces. In addition to various private domestic gardens, her work includes a small public space sponsored by local philanthropists who were involved in the re-design and restoration of a natural spring which has become a local landmark. This was a sensitive piece of work with a considerable amount of local interest which required an understanding of local materials and the importance of respecting the integrity of a historically significant feature. Naturalistic planting was required to ensure that the connectivity with the landscape was maintained. The highlight of her year so far has been working as part of the enthusiastic and talented team on the gold-winning ‘Breaking Ground’ garden at Chelsea, designed by Andrew Wilson and Gavin McWilliam from Wilson McWilliam Studio. This was an amazing experience for her and a great opportunity to witness first-hand the incredible process of getting a garden such as this out of the ground in a short time frame. Victoria believes it was the synergy between everyone involved which made a lasting impression and which she says was ultimately crucial to the success. Come and hear Victoria speak more about her success at the LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park, to register for your free ticket visit www.landscapeshow.co.uk to find out more.

IOG
The Cleft Wood Co. Having been established over twenty five years the Cleft Wood Company have vast experience in producing cleft oak fencing materials and gates. This year they completed a major supply and install project at Stowe Landscape Gardens for the National Trust, restoring the 18th century landscape with their cleft oak Stowe Paling fencing. Hawkwell Mead was enclosed to allow grazing and to tie it in with Hawkwell Field across the lake. The fence would not be alien to Capability Brown if he was to stride across the grounds today; in fact most of the tools and methods of construction used would be the same. The fencing is made by hand from English oak and is split along the grain rather than sawn, giving both a beautiful irregular and charming character and an integral strength. It blends seamlessly into the historic landscape at Stowe but is equally at home in gardens large and small. The oak is sourced from thinnings where the best trees are left to grow on. They produce a range of fencing from Post and Rail to 6’ tall Deer Paling; gates and building materials for restoration, all in cleft oak. The company deal UK wide and have exported to Europe, the Far East and the USA. For more info on products etc. please visit The Cleft Wood Company at their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) is the leading organisation that represents professional and volunteer groundsmen and women. Founded in 1934 by W H Bowles BEM, Head Groundsman at Eton College, the first 11 founder members formed the National Association of Groundsmen which became the Institute of Groundsmanship in 1969. The original purpose was defined as being to improve the status of groundsmen and the standard of groundsmanship. Our vision is to promote quality surfaces and quality services and establish the IOG as ‘the’ leading professional organisation for grounds management, recognised by the National Governing Bodies of Sport and the public, private and voluntary sectors for its industry knowledge and technical expertise. In 2011, the IOG set up the Young Board of Directors (YBD). The YBD are leading the Institute’s ‘Get into Grounds’ strategy encouraging 14-16 year olds, school leavers and young people to consider a career in groundsmanship. Most members of the group entered the industry by volunteering at a local sports club and learnt the skills and gained the experience they needed as they went along. You can follow the YBD on Twitter; @iogyoungboard or on Facebook; ‘The IOG Young Board’. Alternatively you can e-mail us at youngboard@ iog.org and head to www.iog.org for more information on the IOG and the Young Board of Directors. 2016 was the first LANDSCAPE Show that the IOG Young Board of Directors attended. We found the variety of exhibitors along with the quality of attendees invaluable, and therefore made no hesitation in deciding to come back for 2017. Due to the quality of exhibitors and visitors, the IOG Young Board made many useful connections that we have greatly benefitted from since the show last year.

BronzeWork BronzeWork is a Suffolk-based custom metalwork company specialising in bespoke projects which feature in both historic and modern environments. Pieces range from door furniture through to balustrades and railings. The most successful outcomes are where they can work closely with the client to find the best solution before production. This may involve making prototypes or test pieces to check assumptions, particularly to check the dynamics of a piece. The less successful projects tend to be rushed with ill-defined parameters. Sometimes a simple sketch can go straight to production, but it is often useful to work up the design using Computer Aided Design to evaluate options and to create working drawings as in this garden table designed by Douglas Mackie. Once the design was settled, the parts were profiled, and the whole powder-coated. It is a good example of how they do old things using modern techniques and new things in a traditional way. Pots of Distinction Ltd This beautiful garden transformation was completed in a very short amount of time, making it all the more impressive. The client wanted a clean space with no fussiness, to surprise a friend undergoing chemotherapy treatment, and isn’t it amazing how quickly adding some ‘wow’ factor pots can give your garden a fresh and updated look? Large pots like these are a great way to add bits of colour or fresh greenery to different areas of your garden while also keeping it low maintenance. Whether you’re going for a traditional or modern look in your garden, Pots of Distinction have a wide range of large authentic pots that suit areas of all shapes and sizes. Highly decorated or very natural, each pot has a different personality and will add lots of new character to any planting scheme. Each pot has been handmade from natural clay by craftsmen in Southeast Asia, where they are fired in traditional wood burning kilns that reach temperatures of 1000-1200 degrees centigrade. Firing pots at these high temperatures makes them naturally frost-proof, tough enough to survive the UK’s cold winter temperatures and strong enough to withstand all elements. Handcrafted pots are an increasingly rare art form, so why not browse their unique range and enjoy them while they’re still available.

Lumena Lights Lumena Lights have created the new “LightWatchman” is an incredibly simple, yet very effective way of controlling all garden and exterior lighting. With a retail price of £59.00 plus VAT it is far less costly than more complicated systems. It consists of an outdoor weather-proof mains socket with a built-in timer and photocell (dusk to dawn). To operate, simply set a known daylight time as the “on” time e.g. 3pm, and then set the time you want the lights to be extinguished as the “off” time e.g. 11.30pm. Set the control switch to timer operation and that’s it! The timer then works alongside the photocell, which will only switch on the lights at dusk; the timer will then switch them off at 11.30pm. As winter approaches with darker evenings the photocell will automatically switch on the lights earlier, within the set time frame, with no need to alter the timer throughout the year. The socket can also solely be controlled by the photocell by switching the control switch to permanent “on” and also turned off completely. Either 12v lighting, via a plug-in transformer, or 240v lights can be operated up to a maximum of 700W. The “LightWatchman” must be installed by a qualified electrician. An ideal location is next to an existing outdoor socket.
Chic Teak Luxury Furniture Chic Teak received a residential tree bench commission to cover a sewage pipe which had been used as huge concrete planter, which housed a large fig tree in the grounds of a beautiful garden overlooking Falmouth estuary. A standard tree bench and their roll topped tree bench were too low to cover the unusual planter. The customer also wanted a rolled top to completely cover the planter edge and compliment the look with thick supporting legs. They manufactured a bespoke teak tree bench with a 175cm internal and 290cm external diameter and included a wide smooth top. With limited time to produce the seat before a forthcoming wedding in the garden, they had to draft the requirements, approve the drawings, manufacture and ship all within 3 months. From initial enquiry to installation, we managed to complete the task in less than 11 weeks and within budget. Come and talk to the team and see their range at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park.

Moore Concrete Products Ltd ECOncrete®’s Bio-Active Wall Installation at the Azouri Eco-Tower (Tel Aviv, Israel) contributed to the buildings LEED innovation points and was the first Israeli office building to receive a Gold LEED certificate. LEED is a global standard rating system for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage market transformation towards sustainable design. On this project, approximately a month after planting, the wall started developing noticeable plant coverage. As little as three months post planting mosses started colonising the wall, covering between a few centimetres to over half the tile surface in certain cases. Based on research findings from this project and other prior installations ECOncrete®’s has been able to evaluate its role in decreasing the ecological footprint of urban environment by; promoting high plant diversity and coverage on the structures façade, contributing to air quality through oxygen production of enhanced plant coverage, increasing energy efficiency of the structure envelope, absorption and reduction of atmospheric CO2, acting as a passive acoustic insulation, enhanced foliage cover serves to absorb solar radiation, high foliage cover captures pollutants from the air and increasing the overall aesthetics of the structure. Standard and pocket tiles are 30cm’s square, although dimensions can be adjusted to meet the needs of specific projects. Perennial The Urban Worm Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC), Washington, USA is possibly one the most unlikely of places to find a worm farm, however the power of the humble earthworm is being harnessed to great effect. As part of her Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travel Fellowship Anna de la Vega visited the facility to learn how the worm farming programme has saved $100,000 in tipping fees whilst generating 50,000 pounds of superior organic fertiliser annually. First established in 2010 with only 200 worms the programme has grown into a commercial operation with over 7 million worms housed in bins made from discarded materials. The worms are converting 15,000 pounds of food waste every month into the highest quality organic fertiliser and compost available. The programme at MCC proves exemplarily and pioneers the potential for worm farming as an integral component of sustainable societies. Inmates are not only receiving relevant job training in an emerging and important field they are playing a key role in driving the process throughout the USA. MCC have supplied numerous other correctional facilities, schools and community organisations with information, worms and homemade worm farms. The programme pioneers the potential for beneficial partnerships and cooperation with the wider community by supplying the local county with freshly brewed worm tea to fertilise community parks and public spaces, reducing government spending whilst eliminating the use of synthetic fertiliser. Since her return Anna de la Vega has been facilitating the introduction of the UK’s first HMP Worm Farm in Birmingham.
Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough. Life’s challenges such as illness, injury or loss of income can strike at any time and their effects can be devastating, especially for those working in jobs that rely on physical health and fitness. Perennial helps by offering free and confidential advice as well as practical and emotional support, which also extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Its team of Caseworkers and Debt Advisers across the UK tailor the support they give to the specific needs of each individual. Many of us support charities as a way of giving something back, and what better than choosing a cause close to home that helps the people within our own industry? Perennial relies on income from its supporters to deliver its services to those that need them. There is still a way to go before Perennial and the help it offers is known by everyone in the industry. As the leading landscaping trade event, LANDSCAPE is a very valuable platform for Perennial to raise awareness and increase support.

The gold medal winning Crohns and Colitis garden, “Facing Fear, Finding Hope”, designers approached them and asked if they could create a sculpture that captured the intense feelings experienced during an episode of the disease. Their initial thoughts when hearing the description of how it feels, was the overwhelming urge to cower and hide, hoping in vain to get away from the pain. These thoughts translated into a seat that surrounds you, black inside with a hunched figure hiding his face on top. The spiky texture of the sides is uncomfortable to look at, and the rusty colour the aging redwood produces matches the rusted metal pergola it sits in. The rest of the garden was perfectly executed and flowed as a coherent story, from the darkness into the light. The second garden they were involved with was the Mid Cheshire Hospitals garden focusing on Dementia and Alzheimer’s care. Called “Remember Me”, the garden contained colours, scents and items chosen to bring back memories of bygone days, helping people to recall cherished times. Dan, their talented carpenter, produced some stunning seating from Douglas Fir which complemented the garden perfectly. The “Remember Me” garden won the Silver Gilt medal. Come and see examples of their sculptures on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Proludic Ltd Outdoor Gyms were initially considered to be home to warm climates where they are better suited to the outdoor way of life for users across parks and beaches. This has proved the case as there is an everincreasing programme of Outdoor Gyms across the UK. The key principles for the design of the exercise stations are the safety and benefits to the user. This can be achieved through a controlled weight resistance system along with clear signage and accompanying technology providing guidance and structure to safe independent work outs. Proludic Urbanix was one of the first to the UK market with an outdoor gym range using a unique operating system that utilizes a hydraulic piston. The piston offers controlled movement across both movement planes of extension and contraction of the muscle groups, which means that users are guaranteed a safe and consistent work out. The benefits to this, against a body weight resistant system, means that users can train using the machines regardless of their own body weight and fitness level. The hydraulic piston is integral to the Urbanix system as it enables users to start working out with a resistance setting range of 5kg, increasing to 60kg by the rotation of the operating dial. Tested to over 2 million reps it gives peace of mind when installing in open unsupervised spaces. The ergonomic considerations with the design of the seats and long handles ensure a safe and comfortable training experience. The aesthetic of this equipment is important when placed within a park setting and the muted beige colour ensures it sits well within a landscaped or natural environment, bright colours can act as a beacon for play and these should be avoided. Come and see their innovative range on their stand at the LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park.

SGD
The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has been championing excellence in garden design for over 35 years. It is the only professional association for garden designers in the UK and counts some of the UK’s leading garden and landscape designers among its growing membership. The SGD will be back at the LANDSCAPE Show for the 4th year, this September. SGD Chair, Philippa O’Brien, explains why: “Last year we were delighted to have had over 70 membership enquiries at LANDSCAPE and were able to welcome some talented new designers to the Society. LANDSCAPE is great place to meet up with members and talk through projects and initiatives such as our conferences, workshops and annual awards scheme. It is also the perfect place to introduce ourselves to the new cohort of students who come to the show in droves to get to grips with the industry. The show offers excellent networking opportunities and is an ideal environment to get together with suppliers and sponsors. We are delighted to be returning.”

Thrive Notcutts, the family owned garden centre company, is funding a second bursary scheme at garden therapy charity Thrive. Ten students have already successfully completed their training in social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) at Thrive thanks to a bursary created last year in the name of the late Charles Notcutt OBE. The Charles Notcutt Memorial Bursary was launched in January 2015 to enable five students to complete Thrive’s Award in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH). More than 50 people applied and Thrive shortlisted ten excellent candidates – in light of that Notcutts agreed to fund all ten places. Thrive is one of the UK’s leading authority on using STH and training people in the profession. Social and therapeutic horticulture is a process where horticultural therapists use the garden and the garden environment to build a set of tasks for the people they help; those living with disabilities or ill health, or people who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. STH is a proven therapy which comes under the wider umbrella of green care and is now, more than ever, being widely used to help people. Thrive helps hundreds of people each year at one of its three regional centers, or in the community, and the charity plays an important role in training people from a range of backgrounds, including health, social care and horticulture, or people who are looking for a new career. Thrive’s Training Team run courses across the country, ranging from taster days in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture to a Professional Development Diploma in conjunction with Coventry University. Come and see examples from their schemes on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Stone Federation Step Change
Stone Federation Great Britain is the official trade association for the natural stone industry with over 100 years’ experience in connecting garden designers, landscape architects, specifiers and clients with the finest stone professionals. We act as the source point for all things stone and your impartial reference point.
Step Change advocate a new approach to working with care settings called ‘Relationship-Centred Design’. For designers, this approach calls for more modest and smaller scale interventions that support the care setting, on its journey along the care culture spectrum towards greater and more meaningful engagement with the outside space.
We are delighted to be working with the LANDSCAPE show as this is a sector that has a strong synergy with the natural stone industry. Natural stone is a fantastic material for the landscape sector; from large city centre projects through to domestic gardens.
Designers and outside specialists may need to overcome some deeply ingrained beliefs around their practice, including focusing on aesthetic qualities of a garden, health and safety approaches that recognise and support advanced forms of risk assessment and an assumption that, as an expert, they are ‘in charge’. The emphasis in the approach they advocate is not simply making the garden neat or pretty, nor believing that they have to redesign or alter the whole space in one go or to fill it with features and objects that may well turn out to be irrelevant or gimmicky, but instead focusing on the expressed needs of the residents and working closely to the current care culture in operation.
Our membership is made up of both the most well established and widely respected names in the industry, alongside the most innovative and creative of natural stone firms, which enables us to expertly resource your requirements. We can help you from project conception right through to the end and beyond, covering everything from stone selection and sample sourcing through to finding a stone professional and providing technical advice. To access a wealth of free resources and to help find the ideal natural stone firm for your next project, go to www.stonefed.org.uk or email us at enquiries@stonefed.org.uk.
Above all, we will need to deploy a wider range of skills and competencies than simply design in order to deliver their aim to ensure that their involvement results in more active and meaningful engagement with the outside space for the residents, staff and families now and for the longer term. To learn more about Step Change come visit their stand at this year’s LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park. @landscapeevent #Landscape2017 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Hook Up Solutions Limited Hooka has had a very busy and varied year since they exhibited at the LANDSCAPE show last September. Helping save landscape gardeners many hours of moving materials, bad backs and, of course money. One of their recent customers, used the machine on a 3 month project in Wimbledon, where the Hooka machine was constantly moving materials being delivered at the roadside swiftly into the heart of the site. They commented they would definitely be using the machine again as it had saved them an immense amount of time and money. Recent trends have been moving the very popular pizza ovens in situ into the rear gardens of properties with restricted access. With the ovens being usually a square² and weighing over 500kg, the Hooka is the perfect sized matched solution to move into the desired location. So the Hooka continues to win the hearts of landscape gardeners by taking the grunt out of shifting bulk materials, hot tubs, statues, root ball trees etc into the heart of sites ready for them to transform into beautiful landscaped projects. They are exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park and they are look forward to meeting you to discuss your hire requirements of the Hooka machine.

Stark & Greensmith At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Stark & Greensmith had the pleasure of working with Alitex on their prominent trade stand on Main Avenue. They said it is an inspiring and uplifting place to be, full of such creativity and good old fashioned hard work! They had a fantastic week there and came away with a few new ideas. If you visited them at RHS Chatsworth, where once again they were teamed up with Alitex on their beautiful stand, then you were part of history as visitors to the first ever RHS show there, it might have been slightly different weather to London, but in true British style they were enjoying every second of it. Stark & Greensmith are still overwhelmed by the response that they received as part of Charlie Bloom’s “Colour Box” show garden. Charlie created such a positive and happy garden, bursting with colour and character. A stunning simple idea, which really stood out in the company of other conceptualised show gardens. It was truly a garden that you could snap with your camera and recreate at home. This approach is one reflected by Stark & Greensmith – they created a laser cut panel range to be something creative, design focused, beautiful and most importantly achievable for real people to have in their own gardens, to be able to feel that they too could have a piece of show garden in their own homes.
Streetscape Social Enterprise is a London based charity, dedicated to growing the lives of 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, disadvantaged and socially excluded. We do this by providing 15-month salaried apprenticeships in landscape gardening, where apprentices work towards a qualification in Horticulture. Our core aim is to help each apprentice build the skills and experience they need to move into, and retain, work and, in so doing, rise above social exclusion, and reach their full potential. Integral to this is our Social Enterprise model, wherein we offer garden design, landscaping, and maintenance services to residential, community, and commercial clients across Greater London. The quality of our apprentice work has been recognised by gardens built at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in 2015 and 2016. We are committed to Growing lives, Transforming landscapes. We are delighted to support the LANDSCAPE Show once again and to take the opportunity to create greater awareness of our apprenticeships within the industry. As a charity operating as a landscape contractor, the Show links us to new suppliers, allowing us to offer an even better service to our clients. Thank you LANDSCAPE Show.

Europlanters Ltd The new Rivet planter range from Europlanters was inspired by the bridges over the Manchester ship canal. The planters are made from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. The most popular being the tall troughs and cubes. These have been used for various projects including a roof terrace on an apartment near the Thames as an alternative to heavy cast iron or metal, yet still giving an industrial, maritime or antique style feel to the space. The rivets are made in a separate moulding so that they can be fixed onto any of the planters in the Europlanters range making the possibilities endless. Each planter is hand crafted from a mould and the rivets that were used to make the mould for the planters were from an old ship building yard to give authenticity to the products. ‘It is always exciting when working on new designs’ said John Wilkes, Director of Europlanters ‘we really enjoy the challenge’. Europlanters will be exhibiting many more of their new designs at the LANDSCAPE show, so come visit there stand in September at Battersea Park.

Hosta Consulting Last month Hosta set about installing another landscaping scheme for residents of Nottingham City Homes. Like much of their schemes, the garden aimed to improve an unloved space and increase urban biodiversity, but most importantly it was to become a space the residents would love and enjoy for years to come. The brief included the need for play equipment for children in the surrounding flats, as well as an outdoor space for adults to enjoy. Providing ‘green’ environments for young children is vital to healthy cognitive development, rather than using typical slides and swings, we chose to use Caledonia Play’s agility equipment which is more physically challenging and naturally stimulating. The garden is also host to an abundance of fruit bushes including blueberries and redcurrants, which will be enjoyed in the summer months. Balancing beams weave their way through tall, textural grasses and flowering perennials, for kids a jungle to explore, for adults simply a nice place to enjoy the sunshine. Surrounding the play areas are two separate wildflower meadows. These impactful spaces provide many opportunities for wildlife, especially bees and butterflies, whilst again adding to the natural experience. Come see Claire and Ed speak at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park by registering for your free ticket at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

CW Studio Ltd
CW Studio has recently led a design team to create a concept for an interactive street in Croydon for a competition run by the Architects’ Journal. The scheme is an exciting, technology-led installation bringing joy and playfulness to the people of Croydon and visitors from further afield. CW Studio is among six finalists from over sixty submissions. The large, sculptural yellow letters spelling ‘Croydon’ are placed on a route through this historic market town creating an urban treasure hunt. These vibrant, bold letters are simultaneously street furniture, play elements and sculptural pieces, creating a fun and unique way of experiencing the town. They encourage interaction between people, whether friends or strangers, changing behaviour and celebrating the street. Each sculptural letter contains innovative and integrated new technology, enabling it to sense the presence of people, and respond in a variety of ways. Passive ambient soundscapes emanate and react to the number of people engaging with the letter, while at night, LED lighting incorporated in the surface is responsive to the nearby sounds and movements of passers-by, glowing and pulsing and drawing people in. Carolyn Willits, founder of CW Studio, is a landscape architect and garden designer who has a passion for exploring the stories and history of places and takes joy in creative collaboration to design bespoke spaces that encourage interaction, are playful and bring delight. City Art Gym City Art Gym is a beautiful combination of public art and exercise equipment. The entire body can be trained on five elegant sculptures, regardless of age and fitness level. City Art Gym is designed and made in Sweden of stainless steel. The equipment is maintenance free. The unique sculptures” the ball, the bridge, the barr, the branch and the balance” can be placed in a park, at a square, on a boardwalk, on the beach, on the schoolyard, or the grounds of a residential development. With its elegance, it can be placed in public spaces where a regular outdoor gym is not appropriate or where there is not enough room. City Art Gym can also add beauty and function to a larger indoor space. It is designed with a gender perspective and tested and approved by people with functional limitations. There are instruction plates – images showing the basic exercises – for each sculpture. The feedback from Scandinavian customers has been very positive. They report that a broader group of people use this installation compared to a conventional outdoor gym. Children play next to parents working out, seniors next to super fit athletes. City Art Gym is a great meeting place and facilitates a healthier and safer community. To see more of City Art Gym come visit them at this year’s LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park.

Ebben Nurseries Recent research indicates that ‘tree climbing’ is good for children’s selfconfidence and independence. Climbing into a tree takes daring, courage and perseverance. You come across unexpected situations, have to estimate the best move to make and need to trust in yourself and the branch you’re standing on. Getting back down from the tree is harder. On the way down you learn to be cautious, to concentrate on your movements and to trust in someone else’s instructions. So there are plenty of reasons to plant climbing trees in cities and in other places where the natural space for children to play is increasingly restricted. But what is a good climbing tree? The ideal climbing tree has thick foliage to hide in or instead an open structure that offers a good view out. It shouldn’t be too tall. It should have strong climbing branches and branches that grow horizontally. And most importantly: there should be branches from the bottom, so the crown is not too high. In short, a good climbing tree will invite you to play! Ebben Nurseries grows many tree varieties specifically as climbing trees, the Carpinus betulus for its unyielding branches and the Pterocarya fraxinifolia for its exciting, dense crown. The Acer campestre can take a knock or a multi-stem Tilia cordata for expert climbers. Want to plant a climbing tree? Come see their full range and discover more at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Health and wellbeing, air quality, placemaking, bio diversity are the most important issues cities of today have to address. At RHS Tatton Park Flower Show Lara Behr has won a Gold medal and the Best Back-to-back garden with her Macmillan Legacy Garden, a place of reflection, inspired by the work of the charity and all those involved in continuing their work. The garden referenced the charity’s founder and the work made possible by legacy donations. Lara has said ‘This has been a huge boost to my career so far and has allowed me to build upon the success I have had to date since leaving LCGD.’ Will Williams won a Silver Gilt Medal at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for ‘Streetscape’s Holding Back the Flood’ a striking representation of the actions of Pickering to reduce any recurrence of recent flooding where trees have been planted to slow water run-off after heavy rainfall. Will said “I’ve had a huge reaction to the garden with people interested in what they can do to help by planting trees, especially Alders, alongside water courses. I’m delighted by the response. Tom Massey also won a Silver Gilt medal at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for the Perennial Sanctuary Garden with spiral paths through colourful planting combinations that led to a calm central space away from the outside world. Tree Aid Tree Aid works in the dry lands of Africa, planting trees and helping to build thriving and sustainable communities. In Africa, trees mean life and they provide communities with food and income through selling tree products. Over the last 10 years they have grown 15.8 million trees and helped over one million villagers in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali and Niger. Tree Aid has helped a person like Sintayehu, who is an apple farmer from Ethiopia. Before he joined a Tree Aid project his five children often went hungry, they ate the same meal which was low in nutrition over and over again. The whole family shared a small hut with their livestock and had just one set of clothes each. When he joined the Tree Aid project, his life changed. Sintayheu received apple tree seedlings and the tools he needed to get started. Today, Sintayehu has over 17 apple trees in his orchard, and is able to sell the apples at a local market. Using some of his money, he bought a bee hive, and now sells honey too. With his additional income, Sintayehu has built a new home for his family, so they no longer have to share with their animals. He has bought them more clothes so they can get changed when they go to gatherings and they are able to eat a nutritious diet which stops them from falling ill. Life is a lot brighter for Sintayehu, and will only get better. Come and talk to them about their work on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Nottingham Trent University
It has been almost a year since the MapNotts project started gathering the perceptions of different locations within Nottingham. This summer, the steering group behind the improvement of public spaces in Carrington, which includes the Architecture Subject Group and volunteers from Nottingham Trent University, CTARA (Carrington Tenants and Residents Association), Hosta Consulting, Double T, Nottingham City Council and Marsh:Grochowski Architects, is facilitating a dialogue with the community in order to explore the potential of public spaces in Carrington. The main focus of MapNotts 2017 is Selkirk Way. They have conducted a number of focus groups, observations and interviews to get a better understanding of the area, using a SWOT model to analyse the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the underpass. The findings informed the development of four design concepts, including a greener boulevard; framing and sheltering; materiality and the plaza. On the 21st of July they had their final public consultation, a street party, when the community was invited to participate in the improvement of the underpass. Different participatory tools were used to engage with the audience, including a Carrington Monopoly board; a layered map of the area, portraying histories, stories and memories; as well as a site model with different architectural elements that encouraged attendees to co-design the future of the underpass. The final co-design solution will be presented at the LANDSCAPE show in September at Battersea Park. Come see Ana Souto speak at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park by registering for your free ticket at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

Niwaki The Bakuma Hunter Folding Saw from Niwaki is the perfect all round saw for garden and arb work - the 24cm blade is big enough for quite substantial cuts, but not too big for more careful, detailed pruning. The joy of folding saws is the extra reach gained in the handle - the Hunter is no exception of a great, rubberised grip that gives you 10” of extra reach. Like all Japanese saws it cuts on the pull stroke, requiring far less effort and a lighter touch than traditional western saws. Wear it in Niwaki Double Holster along with a pair of secateurs for the ultimate kit - Niwaki also make a sturdy leather belt pouch just for the saw. Made in Sanjo, up in Niigata Prefecture in the mountainous north of Japan, Bakuma produce a range of garden and woodworking saws that are renowned around Japan for their hard wearing blades and ergonomic handles. The Hunter has become a stalwart of the Niwaki range, and Jake’s go-to saw for general garden use - he prefers the convenience of a folding saw over the fixed models. Come and see the Bakuma Hunter at Niwaki’s stand and other Japanese tools for professional gardeners at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park.

SGD Five world-class speakers from the UK, Scandinavia and Australia have been announced for the SGD Autumn Conference ‘Water Ways’ on Saturday 18 November 2017 at London’s Royal Geographical Society. From the UK, international landscape designer, Tom Stuart-Smith MSGD will join Andrew Ewing, one of the country’s leading water feature designers, and award-winning garden designer Andrew Wilson FSGD, whose recent projects include the Gold Medal winning Breaking Ground Garden at RHS Chelsea 2017 where his use of water was central to the design. The designers will share their own projects to demonstrate how water features and dynamic planting can define a landscape. Also joining the panel, Phillip Johnson, one of Australia’s leading sustainable landscape designers whose design philosophy centers on recreating habitats to accommodate changing environmental extremes. Known for designing natural pools, billabongs and waterfalls combined with rich horticultural colours, contrasting textures and fragrances, his practice is one of the most awarded Australasian firms in the industry. Mette Skjold, CEO of SLA, a Danish based landscape architecture practice designing some of Scandinavia’s most contemporary and climate-friendly urban landscapes and public spaces, will share how her practice seeks to solve urban challenges through a multi-disciplined approach to water. The speakers will explore different aspects of water in the garden or landscape, including contemporary garden water features, natural pools or ponds, sustainable water, water gardens for flood, wetland, bog or seaside salt marsh and the use of water features to engage and inspire the community. Come speak to them to find out more this September at the LANDSCAPE show at Battersea Park.

Isabel Coulton Sculpture Isabel’s work ranges from stone to wood and bronze, is suitable for indoor conservatories, home spaces and offices, and also gardens and patios, corporate, public or private. Cool clear lines and forms are Isabel’s forte, but her training in historical carving has given her the ability to be flexible to answer commissions and deliver the product the client desires. This year’s LANDSCAPE show is an ideal platform to display her talent and having just completed a major commission for a high profile Abbey, and another on the way, Isabel is looking forward to new challenging ideas. This stone figure is one of a series of smaller works that explore abstraction in the human form. It is carved from Bath stone, a yellowish soft stone which gracefully adorns any garden niche. Oxford Planters Ltd
Oxford Planters has been a leading Cotswold based manufacturer of high-end hardwood planters, garden furniture and hardwood structures since it was established in 2004. They have supplied private individuals as well as some of the leading garden designers from around the world. In 2017 Oxford Planters became involved in an exciting new project creating the ‘Beerhive’ for Garden Designers Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Dan Bowyer. Andrew and Dan were designing a Blind Veterans Garden to feature at RHS Hampton Court Palace Show. In the design process they came up with the fun idea of the Beerhive. Andrew then approached Oxford Planters with the concept, and they couldn’t wait to design and create the product for such a worthy charity garden. The Beerhive handcrafted from Medite Tricoya Extreme, and painted in mizzle, was designed to house a home brewery and featured a place to fit your pint glass for pouring the perfect pint! It caused quite a stir amongst visitors to the show garden, with televisions famous cooks, The Hairy Bikers discussing it with great enthusiasm on Kitchen Live and Gardeners World’s Adam Frost voting it as his favourite design idea of the show. Oxford Planters can’t wait to share their products with you on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

mmcite 1 a.s mmcité is not only a designer and manufacturer of high-quality street furniture, the company is also a partner to all those who want to create something special within public spaces. Mayors of cities of all sizes, in the mountains or coastal areas, architects of small teams and large design institutions, construction companies of local or transnational importance – they address all of them with the aim of achieving the perfect project. The concept of Smart Cities is a growing trend lately and mmcité keeps up with the Smarcité range. The real challenge is not technology, but how to design and use it for the real benefit of citizens. They have been thinking how to enrich public realms to manage both, the benefit and high aesthetic value, and are glad to present new elements to complement their successful products. LED back-lighting contributes to a completely new visual effect of public realms. Resistant steel tables integrated into park benches broaden the utilization and provide a place for your laptop or coffee. Unique bicolour coating greatly represents high-level craft and transports the bench into a highlydistinctive element. Since the charged smart phone is needed the most when being in the city, you can get use of the park benches with integrated USB charging any time. The Woody, Blocq, Radium benches and Rivage lounger can be equipped this way. For mmcité, making street furniture is a cultural mission. They can completely change the face of the city by installing just a few small elements. Come see more of their quality furniture at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park.

Greenfingers Greenfingers Charity commissioned TV Gardener Adam Frost to design the new Courtyard Garden at Keech Hospice, Luton with the help of students of the Homebase Gardening Academy. As an existing good friend of Greenfingers, the charity was delighted to invite Adam to perform the official opening ceremony. This is the 53rd therapeutic and recreational garden built by Greenfingers Charity in children’s hospices around the UK from the Isle of Wight to Loch Lomond. Funding for this project very much relied on the generosity of Homebase DIY chain who have been donating all the 5p carrier bag tax collected since the levy was introduced in October 2015. The original plain space was transformed from a drab concrete courtyard with the muscles and resources of Jody Lidgard and his team of skilled craftsmen at Bespoke Outdoor Spaces. They created a colourful, three-dimensional garden with easy access for wheelchairs using plants that will delight all the senses of the adults and children who spend time at Keech Hospice Care and their visitors. This team will also be commissioned by Greenfingers Charity to work on the design and build at another children’s hospice garden in the grounds of St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice, Grimsby – due to be created later this year. Speaking at the opening, Adam Frost said, “I hope this Courtyard Garden surprises people to start with and then puts a smile on their faces. It’s a wonderful space which seriously ill adults and children can use in many different ways.” Come and talk to Greenfingers about their work on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

WaterWood WaterWood stands for ecological and highly durably hardwood harvested from the Brokopondo-Reservoir in Suriname. The Lake is one of the largest reservoirs in the world. It contains a treasure which cannot be ignored: Millions of cubic metres of wood of the highest quality. Today, 60 years after the reservoir was created due to the construction of a power plant, the trees are felled and serve as the ideal material for European terraces. Harvesting these trees serves the environment enormously, as they would eventually rod and release climate-damaging methane gas. WaterWood offers three highly resistant wood species perfectly suited for outdoor decking: Walaba, Guyana Teak, and Fava. Guyana Teak, for instance, is durable and tough. It impresses with its warm, brown colour and a discreet wood structure. Its weather resistance makes this wood ideal for the construction of high quality terraces. In the maritime sector, Guyana Teak has been used worldwide for decades as a highly resistant wood. All planks are dried and smooth planed in the Netherlands guaranteeing a high quality standard of the finished goods. So far, hundreds of thousands square meters of WaterWood terraces have been built in Europe - with more yet to come. Explore their selection at their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Joint-It 2017 has already been a big year for manufacturer Joint-It Ltd with a move to a 28,000 sq. ft. factory and a rebrand of their ready-mixed, paving jointing compound from Joint-It to “Joint-It Simple”, in recognition of the fact that the product is simple to use and guarantees a professional finish every time. Simple’s cement-free formulation, designed for use in all weathers, developed for paving contractors and landscapers by paving contractors, who worked with technical support from industry experts in Germany and the UK. Manufactured and designed for use with Concrete Paving Slabs, Cobbles, and Natural Stones including – sandstone, granite, limestone, slate, concrete slabs, yorkstone, and porcelain tiles. Available in three paving-friendly colours, neutral, grey and dark grey, Simple is a fast, tip-it-out and sweep-it-in product, that is clean to use and withstands both weeds and power-washers. Starting out in 2011, Joint-It directors Martin Fox and Gary Duffy had a vision to replace traditional grouts and mortars with a more modern and efficient product, focussed on meeting the needs of the paving and landscaping industry. Joint-It currently has several new products in R&D based on the principle of ‘made by paving contractors for paving contractors’, with plans to manufacture a range of high quality performance products for pointing, sealing and cleaning natural stone paving. Perennial
The Perennial Sanctuary Garden at the recent RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show was designed to raise awareness of the UK’s only charity dedicated to looking after all horticulturists in times of need. Designed by Tom Massey, the garden was awarded an RHS Silver Gilt Medal and received a fantastic response from visitors and the media. It was one of the few gardens at the show that visitors were able to walk through and tens of thousands of visitors experienced the garden up close. The garden took a spiral form with a changing colour palette of plants to symbolically represent the journey a Perennial client makes as they overcome difficulty with Perennial’s help. Garden designer Tom Massey, who will be speaking at the New Starters Conference at the LANDSCAPE show hosted by Perennial, comments: “Perennial makes a huge difference to thousands of horticulturists every year. The garden at Hampton provided a fantastic opportunity to show everyone in the industry that if they are going through tough times, help is available. Visitors especially liked the fact they could walk through and engage with the garden, and hopefully that will mean its message has left a lasting impression.” The garden showcased some of the best in horticulture, bringing together a range of partners including multiple gold medals winning contractor Landform Consultants, as well as top British suppliers including nursery Hortus Loci and stone paving specialists London Stone. Find out more at their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park and to hear Tom Massey speak, register for your free ticket at www.landscapeshow.co.uk

The Landscaper
The Landscaper since it was first published nearly 20 years ago with it’s succinct, no nonsense independent editorial has always been a firm favourite with landscapers, designers, landscape contractors, greenkeepers and groundsmen. The title has had three owners, the founder Chris Floate, Metropolis International Ltd and since 2014 Curtis Media Ltd. The last three years have seen a sharp and sustained growth in the magazines advertising revenue. This is due to a number of factors. The printed version of the magazine has been upgraded with perfect binding, improved paper quality, better design and most importantly a significant increase in pagination with 80 to 100 pages per issue now the norm. The digital footprint of The Landscaper has increased in size by not only increasing its UK readership but also by building a sizable international following. The page turner version of the magazine has achieved an incredible 81,699 impressions and our monthly newsletter gets double the industry average open rate on Mail Chimp 11/7/2017. From the 28 days following August 21st The Landscapers tweets achieved 117, 900 impressions. There is no doubt that the move from a large publishing concern to a family business has also proved to be beneficial. Curtis Media Ltd is dedicated to just one magazine and not in the business of organising exhibitions or award ceremonies. Their costs and staffing levels are therefore kept to a minimum which means they are able to offer extremely competitive advertising rates. Come and meet the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
