Streetlife For the Federal Garden Show 2015 (BUGA) hosted by the German Hanseatic city of Havelberg, Streetlife was commissioned to install a unique 40-metre-long Crossline Bridge to straddle the Flethe valley. The impressive St. Marien Cathedral, with the adjoining convent garden, and the BUGA exhibition gardens in Havelberg are separated from each other by the Flethe valley. By connecting the two sites, the new bridge allows visitors to visit both venues together. The bridge was the result of intensive collaboration between Streetlife and the BUGA 2015 event organisers, during which initial plans for a temporary connection evolved into a more permanent solution. The challenge was to find a long-span bridge with a warm, open character consistent with the preserved historic townscape. The beautiful CorTen Crossline Bridge from the Streetlife Bridges & Decking Collection met all of the event’s requirements. Streetlife’s design team custom engineered this unique structure with an exceptional 40-metre span. The bridge was constructed from a combination of sustainable materials, including FSC© hardwood and Streetdeck®40 decking material as well as stainless and CorTen steel. The remarkable aesthetics of the CorTen Crossline Bridge make it a very popular model. By combining robust fence modules with a transparent infill of criss-crossed stainless steel balusters, the design results in a bridge that is both exciting and timeless. The slanted, sleek supports give the impression of a floating bridge and elegantly emphasise the natural height differences of the Havel region’s river landscape. The warm tones of the hardwood combined with CorTen steel lend the structure the appearance and natural colour that Havelberg desired for this historic setting. Come and talk to Streetlife about it on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Tony & Marie Newton ‘Four Seasons’ is a suburban, residential garden that has won two national garden competitions. It was also ranked by Alan Titchmarsh in first place in the ITV series: Britain’s Best Back Gardens for achieving the impossible “Show garden ready no matter what the weather or season!” The owners, Marie and Tony Newton, designed and created the garden. A recent late summer project was to re-felt and create a moss roof for their shaded summerhouse. The existing felt was lightweight so it was replaced with a heavy duty felt. A mud mixture, using garden compost, small pieces of garden moss and water, was spread in a layer over the new felt. This was then planted with old moss that had been removed from other sites in their garden. As a precaution, the new moss roof was covered with fine plastic mesh to hold it in place.

APL

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. The rigorous inspection process to join is the toughest within the industry. Along with the initial inspection, each member is inspected annually to ensure each member has up to date insurances, complies with health and safety law and their quality of work is to the highest possible. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. Discover more about becoming a member of the APL or finding a landscaper to work with at www.landscaper.org.uk. APL are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show, come and talk to them on their stand in Battersea Park this September.

The mosses included both small clumps of Acrocarpous moss and larger patches of the faster growing Pleurocarpous moss. For the first few weeks after replanting, water was occasionally sprinkled to keep the moss moist. Within six months the moss became well-established. Come and listen to Tony & Marie talk about their garden as part of the ‘free to attend’ Seminar Sessions at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September.

Anne Curry Anne Curry’s monumental sculptures are specifically designed for the outdoors and offer a perfect focus point whether in a garden, at the end of an avenue, in a courtyard or a large terrace. A keen gardener herself, she finds inspiration in plant forms and strives to evoke, in her sculptures, the power of life at work in the natural world. She exhibits regularly here and abroad and finds her work in demand on both sides of the Atlantic and in the UAE. Whatever the background, in formal English gardens, on the slopes of an olive grove in the South of France, on the shore of an ornamental lake in the Netherlands or under the brilliant light of a California setting, her work has always enhanced its surroundings. Her sculptures are cast either in resin or in bronze, with an array of patinations for her client to choose. Come and talk to her on her stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Brilliant Little Planet Most trees are planted with a sturdy post and ‘old fashion’ above ground fixings. Yet research proves that trees fixed underground grow up to 30% faster, because this is where roots normally fix the plant into the soil. When transplanting trees with a girth of up to 55 cm circumference (measured at one metre above ground level), these underground systems are exceptionally effective. Planting trees is important for the environment, carbon sequestering and their amenity value. Brilliant Little Planet Ltd promotes the Biobased & Biodegradable Tree Anchor System, called the Keeper System. The entire system is located underground, this makes it resistant to vandalism. It is also better for the trees, because the vulnerable bark and trunk do not scrape against fixings and are not pressurised. Moreover, trees that are able to move freely above ground move more naturally and grow up to 30% faster. The Keeper system is simple and labour friendly, besides its simplicity the system is also characterized by its sustainability and effectiveness. All materials used in the Keeper system are biodegradable, including the biodegradable rope that anchors the tree, biodegradable irrigation pipe that allows for aeration and watering and the biodegradable sheet that guides roots and allows for targeted watering. The entire systems biodegrades after the tree has developed its roots enough to stand on its own. Furthermore after installation the system requires little to no aftercare. Brilliant Little Planet recently supplied an anchoring system for three 4.5m tall pines (Pinus sylvestris) that are now planted at a new development in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BCA Materiaux Anciens Occasionally BCA are involved in partial or complete de-construction of large-scale buildings such as 19th century French military barracks, or a sad chateau decomposing on the site of a chemical works. BCA endeavour to source antique paving and other features suitable for interior and exterior projects from places like these. The architectural stone features from this particular chateau will be available for re-use on garden projects for example, as stone doorways through to different garden zones, follies, pool houses etc. It was built as a vineyard owner’s comfortable home in the second part of the 19th century. Of manageable scale and proportions, it is suitable for a coherent architectural project for shipping and re-builds. An old postcard view towards the chateau across its south-west gardens is evocative of happier times. Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer UK garden designers Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer have just completed planting the new Centenary Woodland Garden at Blind Veterans UK Llandudno. The project to transform 4 acres of woodland into a useful resource for those using the centre and local residents has been completed entirely with volunteer help and support and will be opened during National Volunteer Week on 2nd June 2015 and in celebration of the charity’s centenary. Andrew Fisher Tomlin said “It was a great honor to be asked to provide master planning and design to transform what was an unused but very valuable resource. The new woodland will include a series of experiences linked by a matrix of paths where vision impaired ex-servicemen and women can enjoy the woodland in groups as well as on their own.” Amongst other features the new woodland includes a glade with an outdoor fireplace to make it an all year round destination, a special wildlife and bird watching walk as well as shelters, hides and a walkway through a densely planted tree planting. Fisher Tomlin added “This isn’t just for members of Blind Veterans UK who are visiting the centre but also a great resource for the whole community for example local school children will be able to experience the woodland wildlife as well as learning about vision impairment.” The project was supported with a donation of trees from James Coles & Sons who themselves celebrated their centenary in 2014 and also supplied the woodland plants to the project. Both Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Dan Bowyer are featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen.

Gripsure A Cornish inn has transformed a neglected, overgrown garden into a spectacular decked terrace with exotic plants, walkways, ponds and waterfalls. The Waterwheel Inn, which offers bed and breakfast accomodation in the historic White River valley near St Austell, is creating an idyllic outdoor space as part of the property’s ten-year renovation. Owners Mark and Francesca assumed that timber decking would not be a viable option for the new terrace, which sits under mature plants and trees in a shaded valley and would become very wet and slippery. Mark Willis said “Because traditional timber decking can be dangerously slippery, we never imagined we would be able to use timber to achieve such a spectacular result.” The couple were researching flooring options when they discovered Gripsure – one of the UK’s leading non-slip decking manufacturer. Made from FSC-approved Scandinavian Redwood timber, Gripsure decking gives the warm, natural look and feel of traditional decking but its nonslip aggregate strips ensure it stays safe, even in wet weather. The owners opted for Pro Classic, Gripsure’s original design, which achieves the highest safety rating of any nonslip decking available on the market. The Waterwheel now has a five-byeighteen-metre decked terrace, with a number of walkways around the garden. Guests are now able to enjoy the mild climate of mid-Cornwall as well as appreciating the owners’ extensive collection of tree ferns and observing local wildlife. Come and see the Gripsure range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Kebony Kebony, a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, announced their latest project, in collaboration with Arkitema Architects, at Gentofte School. The new addition to the school in Denmark creates a further 460m² of space, which can accommodate 100 children, spread across two floors. The extension houses three classrooms, a common room and a double height workshop as well as a large roof terrace. The designers, Arkitema Architects, worked in a close collaboration with the school’s management and teaching teams to ensure the space was practical and ergonomic for both the primary classes and the after school activities. The children at Gentofte school age from 5-9 years, as such the building has been completed with special features such as sliding walls that also function as writing boards and can be easily operated by the children. The new space can also be converted into either a single or double-height space and can be divided into compartments to host several classrooms dependent on the needs of the students and teachers. The large south facing princess balconies will similarly afford further dynamic teaching methods by creating additional outdoor and recreational spaces. Sustainability was key to the design ethos, leading to the decision to clad the entire façade of the new extension, just under 400m², in Kebony wood. Produced using sustainably sourced species of soft wood which are impregnated with a non-chemical bio-based product and heated under pressure, Kebony is a highly durable and environmental product. The use of sustainable Kebony wood also means that the façade is totally maintenance free and will not be susceptible to damage through wear and weathering in the future. Consequently, the façade will soon be covered by a ‘vertical forest’ with a depth of up to 60cm and a wall of climbing plants which will eventually house birds and insects. Carsten Løppenthin Møller, Managing Director of Kebony Denmark, commented “Kebony are really pleased to have been selected for this project; the flexible and innovate design is an exemplar for new school facilities but this flexibility has not compromised on the beauty of the building. We look forward to seeing the Kebony develop its silver patina and blend with the new trees and climbing plants.” Come and see the Kebony range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Gordon Low Nick from NEB Waterscapes asked Gordon Low to manufacture a tailor made SealEco EPDM Liner which was one of the more challenging designs that they have been asked to produce with two shelves and split depths. A really lovely example of a tailor made liner and a perfect fit giving the garden a touch of individuality. Martin Kelley, MD of Fairwater Ltd has a reputation for building some stunning ponds with Gordon Lows SealEco EPDM and this was no exception. Martin supplied the template for them to construct this pond with a beautifully curved wall and decking extending over the water into the pond. 250gsm Geotextile was used to protect the liner prior to further construction within the pond. Martin loves the uniqueness that a tailor made liner can bring to an installation and admits that it really is a lot easier than fitting a flat sheet tucking and folding into all those corners. Ecosystems Knowledge Network For outdoor spaces big and small, the landscape industries have a key role in forming people’s view of why the natural environment matters. Recent years have seen a shift in thinking about nature’s place in society. This has been supported by flurry of research initiatives, such as the UK National Ecosystem Assessment, as well as public policy. The landscape industries need a chance to work out what opportunities this new thinking might bring to customers and wider society. According to the new thinking, natural features in the landscape are a costeffective way of addressing some of society’s biggest challenges such as health inequality, flood risk and sustainable local economic development. Nature needs to be managed as a form of capital and infrastructure, as well as something of enormous ‘intrinsic’ value. The Ecosystems Knowledge Network, supported by groups such as the UK Contractor’s Group, is putting a spotlight on examples of what this thinking about nature’s role in society means in practice for individual projects. The challenge is to design and manage natural features that are not simply wonderful to look at, but are chosen because they are providers of ‘services’ such as pollination, carbon storage and health improvement. There will be an increasing need to demonstrate how the natural features in any one project add to the ‘natural capital’ of the landscape in which its sits, not just the confines of a site. All this needs to be done with the involvement of people in and around the site. Dr Bruce Howard from The Ecosystems Knowledge Network is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September where he is looking forward to sharing some of this new thinking.

Historian, writer and garden designer Sir Roy Strong, has agreed to bequeath The Laskett Gardens to Perennial. The Laskett Gardens, which cover some four acres, have been described as the largest formal gardens to be created in England since 1945. Dougal Phillip, Chair of Perennial’s Board of Trustees, says, “We are delighted to have been offered the opportunity to carry out Sir Roy’s wishes to preserve the integrity of his outstanding garden for future generations.” Sir Roy Strong and his late wife, the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman purchased the house and the undeveloped four acre site in Herefordshire in 1973. Inspired by the great gardens before 1914 such as Hidcote, by those of baroque Italy and of Tudor and Stuart England, they embarked on designing and planting the incredible garden visible today. This is a garden of rooms underpinned by dramatic vistas and elements of surprise which draw the visitor through the terrain, which uniquely abounds with autobiographical and historical references. Speaking about his decision to leave his Gardens to Perennial, Sir Roy says, “It is no secret that the creation of the Gardens was a shared passion with my late wife and that they will remain a monument to a marriage. Now that we have opened to the public that passion is shared with the thousands of visitors each year which we welcome. I am heartened that that will continue and also that the Gardens will continue to change and develop in the future. I see it not only as a bequest to Perennial but also to the county of Herefordshire.” The garden will be left to Perennial with a generous endowment to ensure its maintenance for years to come. The charity will continue to open the garden to visitors for periods of the year, as it does its two other open gardens, York Gate near Leeds and Fullers Mill Garden in Suffolk.

Greenwall.pro We are moving towards a future of increased city living where technical innovation is essential to create liveable and sustainable cities. The integration of green spaces is a climate and ecological objective; linking them together with vertical planting creates a coherent and intact environment. Both inside and outside plants improve our personal well-being. The design and production of the Greenwall. pro system is committed to the concept of sustainability and its role in improving the environment for a healthier community. Research proves plants’ ability to actively reduce air pollutants, contribute to stabilising inner city temperatures by cooling and insulating buildings, and countering the city phenomena of the heat island effect and reflected noise pollution.

Developed by a team of specialists from engineering, architecture and landscape design fields, the Greenwall.pro system meets the requirements of the building and provides optimum plant conditions. Behind its environmental role, a vertical green space should be pleasing to the eye; the 3 litre rooting volume ensure healthier, stronger, visually nicer plants; the decorative front panel maintains this appearance when plants are changed or the system is integrated into an “gardened” site. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Greenwall.pro’s all stainless steel system has been designed and built as an architectural cladding system with a building lifespan, and ultimately is completely recyclable. Its rapid construction minimises disruption in a busy city, the automation and remote monitoring options reduce site visits and yet ensure an immediate response to third party issues such as power outages.

Trellis Direct Trellis Direct have recently launched a brand new slatted screening panel which is now available to order via their website. The demand for the contemporary slatted panel style is currently very high and though their smaller slatted garden and privacy screening panels are hugely popular as an alternative to traditional trellis panels, having spoken to some of their main trade contacts regarding new products they would like to see offered, Trellis Direct felt that a new design using wider slats would be an excellent addition to the range. These new panels are already proving very popular with both new and returning customers. Using the same high quality timber, planed & sanded for a luxury finish as per the other products in our range, the slatted screening is available to order in a natural or painted finish. These come in one panel size of 1853 (w) x 600mm (h) and are sold singularly or in packs of 2 or 3 with the intention that they can be fixed above each other to build the fence up to the required height.

The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) exists to promote excellence in garden design and their members are committed to providing you with the best service. NBB Outdoor NBB’s recycled furniture focuses on providing eco-friendly outdoor furniture which has been manufactured from 100% recycled plastic – using premium manufacturing processes. Furniture from 100% recycled plastic is far better than traditional wood or even metal furniture as it’s more robust to withstand the heavy demands of the commercial world. In fact NBB’s very own 100% recycled plastic standard picnic table can withstand over 1000kg. When you bear in mind that the world record for bench pressing is 488.47kg – you’ll struggle to find a table that’s more robust! All of their range now also comes with a 15 year guarantee for complete peace of mind. With the ever changing world we live in, we all need to be more aware of the materials we use and ensure we use sustainable products where possible – all of our recycled furniture is UK sourced to our manufacturing plant in Dorset and made from recycled plastic milk bottles. Their range is growing all the time and they have the benefits of being able to produce bespoke products. Earlier this year they provided outdoor furniture to a famous premiership football club, which included poseur tables, A frame tables, and condiment stations – all manufactured from 100% recycled plastic. Streetscape Streetscape is an award winning social enterprise. They provide apprenticeships in landscape gardening to 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, helping them to build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfil their dreams and move into and retain work: growing lives, transforming landscapes. In so doing they design, landscape and maintain gardens across South London for residential, commercial and communitybased clients. Streetscape was founded by James Gubb and Guy Watts. They are driven by one, simple, overarching goal: that each and every long-term unemployed young person they provide an apprenticeship to then moves into, and retains work, following their time with them. Recently, Streetscape were contracted to relocate and build the Gold medal winning RBC Waterscape Garden, designed by Hugo Bugg for the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This garden is open to the public, so if you would like to see Streetscape’s work first hand, please visit at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Esthec In a villa designed by architect Carlos Morales on Lanzarote, Esthec® Terrace was chosen as the finish material for the terrace. This luxury system is known for its style and durability, which also makes it suitable for use in residential projects. Esthec® Terrace was therefore highly suited to this home on the Canary Islands where it was successfully integrated into the overall design. The freedom of colour choice was also crucial. Incorporating Esthec® Terrace in the Essence colour, has contributed to the overall stylish concept of the villa. The owners’ strong preference for the Esthec® Terrace system quickly convinced world famous architect Morales, which now sees the terrace used as a unique addition to the natural style of the villa. The Essence colour scheme blends the connection between the villa and terrace; also the porch with its comfortable lounge area – that includes a large hanging chair – is equipped with Esthec® Terrace. The water level of the pool is at the same height as the terrace. As a result the villa radiates an unprecedented luxury, which is enhanced by the modern and rustic appeal of Esthec® Terrace. Style and design come together in Esthec® Terrace, but the fantastic product durability has also influenced the choice for Esthec®. Esthec® Terrace is made from composite materials and therefore splinter-free, nonslip and easy to maintain and install. Altogether the Esthec® Terrace excels in both functionality and design, which makes it an excellent choice for individuals. Perennial’s show garden at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park marks the launch of a new legacy fundraising campaign, highlighting how vital gifts in wills are to the charity. Supported by Glendale and designed by Paul Hervey-Brookes, the Perennial Legacy Garden brings together a team from across the horticulture industry, showing support for their trade charity. A large proportion of Perennial’s work is funded by the generosity of those who remember Perennial in their will. Legacy donations currently make up over a third of Perennial’s income, playing a vital role in ensuring the charity is able to continue providing support for those who have nowhere else to turn. Perennial has a long history of helping horticulturists, originally founded by the custodians of Britain’s great estates to help the gardeners who worked to hard to create and maintain them. Reflecting this heritage, the show garden is based on elements of a large English country estate, featuring long, richly planted herbaceous borders, a pavilion and a separate walled working garden with gardener’s bothy and nursery beds. Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Development at Perennial says: “The garden has been a huge team effort bringing together a top designer, a great sponsor, quality suppliers and landscapers. It highlights why it is in the interest of everyone working in this industry that Perennial is here, to provide a safety net if ever they should need it.” The garden not only won a Gold Medal for Designer Paul Hervey-Brookes but also won Best In Show. Come and listen to Paul Hervey-Brookes, one of our featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and take the time to visit the Perennial stand to find out more about leaving a gift to Perennial in your will.

The Pot Company Industry professionals were left scratching their heads when the brand owner of the ‘Fibreclay’ planter range decided to cease production late last year. The development was both puzzling and a cause for concern; Fibreclay has driven the development of the faux lead container market over the last decade, so gaps in supply could result in lost or delayed projects. Whilst alternatives have sprung up in the past, as you would expect with any successful product, they have lacked the durability and authentic finish of the originals, so have struggled to last the test of time. The Pot Company, however, feel they have now sourced a high quality, direct replacement and have already started bringing containers into the UK. Their new ‘Clayfibre’ range is manufactured using similar eco-friendly techniques and recycled materials that will weather gently and realistically. “Fibreclay has been an important part of our business for a number of years,” explains Natalie Sharp, manager of the Pot Company, who held one of only two licences to bring Fibreclay into the UK. Clayfibre – which is made using techniques that require only 10% of the energy needed for ceramic and plastic equivalents - is available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including classic Chelsea boxes, troughs and cylinders. It also represents the same excellent value as Fibreclay.

Bituchem Hard landscaping specialists, Bituchem has completed the first application of its advanced Natratex Cotswold Porous material at the recently redeveloped Royal William Yard in Plymouth. Approximately 2000sq.m of the porous material was applied to the ‘secret garden’ car park, giving both a practical and aesthetically pleasing finish to the site. Designed by Dartington-based Gillespie Yunnie Architects the new car park is situated within a number of Grade II listed walls, formerly a Grade I listed Nursery Walled Garden. The 140-space car park has used Bituchem’s Natratex Cotswold Porous material as well as real grass with plastic trays for reinforcement, to give the entire car park a natural drainage system. Bituchem re-designed its popular Natratex Cotswold material to replicate natural infiltration methods, in response to the demand for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). The asphalt material is laid on a porous receiving layer and has an open structure to allow water to permeate through the surface into the ground and eventually finding its way to a natural water source. The material has been designed to remove the need for conventional drainage systems, thus eliminating the likelihood of blocked drains and water contamination. Come and talk to Bituchem about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

“As part of our commitment to hold as many 2014 prices as possible, we have decided to offer Clayfibre at last season’s rates for Fibreclay,” adds Natalie. “We will also continue to allow our customers to buy the exact sizes they require and not insist on them buying full sets.” Come and see some of the range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Round Wood of Mayfield In line with their ongoing commitment to supply responsibly harvested timber, Round Wood of Mayfield ensure that all Balau Decking from Indonesia is sourced with SVLK certification. Indonesia boasts some of the largest natural forests in the world. Its 80 million hectares are the biggest in Asia and third largest in the tropics, so it is no surprise that timber products are seen as a key export for the archipelago. Unfortunately, potential growth in this area has not been fully realised over recent decades. Concerns over forestry practices and rampant illegal logging have seen consumer nations often hesitate to trade, particularly those in North America and Europe where regulation is increasingly strict. In order to open up these markets, the Indonesian government introduced SVLK certification in 2010. Despite some initial hitches, Indonesia is now rapidly improving its level of timber exports, which include hardwood decking, flooring. Come and see it for yourself on the Roundwood stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Wendy Perring from PAD The replacement dwelling set within an RHS listed woodland garden seeks to echo the U - shaped stable block on site that it replaces, creating a sheltered courtyard. The building nestles into the slope behind and brings the stunning setting of Spinners Garden into the house. The design objective has been to create a new building that is articulate, yet economic in form. In keeping with the local context, it draws upon the vernacular language of the New Forest and interprets it in a contemporary manner. The replacement dwelling will enable the owners and their family to live and manage the garden and nursery from home, retaining a valuable and much enjoyed public amenity. The design seeks to minimise the environmental impact of the building both during the construction and the life of the building by utilising a super insulated fabric and discreet renewable energy options. The architectural objective has been to develop a building whose form, scale, materials and detail reinforces the character, distinctiveness and history of the site both locally and within the wider context of the New Forest. Planning Approval was achieved in December 2010. Construction is due to commence at the end of 2013. Tobermore Developed by Rosther Hill Developments, Beswick Green is a unique, period-style development in the very heart of Staffordshire. In a private courtyard setting on the outskirts of the historic Swynnerton village and the picturesque countryside, the development comprises a selection of 22 classic cottages, houses and apartments, constructed by Speller Metcalfe. The impressive homes blend traditional architectural style and craftsmanship with twenty first century amenities. Built on green-belt land, the flawless landscape has been designed by Staniforth Architects Ltd, and enhanced with the installation of Tobermore world class products. Tobermore’s Tegula Trio block paving and Kerbstone in Bracken was chosen by Lord and Lady Stafford of Swynnerton who oversaw the design aspects of this project. Tegula Trio evokes timeless style and elegance, complementing the style and ambiance of Beswick Green perfectly. Tegula Trio displays a naturally weathered stone appearance and is available in a wide range of solid and blended colours. Kerbstone embodies a unique aged appearance and harmonises beautifully with Tobermore paving products. As well as selecting the landscaping products incorporated on the stunning development, Lord and Lady Stafford of Swynnerton also created the name ‘Beswick Green,’ naming it after two very special long-serving members of staff on their family estate, Bert Beswick and Rudd Green. Sadly as Mr. Green passed away in 2012, Lord and Lady Stafford gave Mr. Beswick, aged 82, the honour of officially opening the development at a recent ceremony. AVS Fencing Supplies It was back in 1998 that AVS Fencing Supplies opened the doors of their 3rd branch, in the East Sussex town of Ringer, Lewes. Since then the company has expanded somewhat, with the opening of their 9th branch at the end of 2014. As part of a recent evaluation of the company’s direction and continued growth, it was decided that a new brand identity was needed to deliver a defined message of who AVS are along with reflecting their values. This includes ongoing investments being made back into the company’s branches, starting with an extensive refurbishment at AVS Lewes. The project was overseen by AVS Managing Director, Neil Beglin, who commented on the project: ‘Whilst it was important to achieve a more contemporary appearance, the design and build was led by the needs of the customer. This was very important to AVS, to reflect our brand values in the branch’. Key features of the refurbishment include a new contemporary glass shop front, bespoke trade counter, new floor and ceiling, and a lifestyle browsing area. Branch manager Klaus Mills, comments ‘The feedback on the new look and layout has been very positive. The design allows us to merchandise more effectively and showcase products from brands such as Grange, Paslode, Draper, and Q-Deck, to name but a few’. Lewes is the first of several investments being made into the AVS branches, with the next refurbishment project due to commence at AVS Guildford this Christmas. For more information about AVS Fencing Supplies, please visit their stand (E33) at the LANDSCAPE Show, Battersea Park 2223 September.

The Lapa Company The Lapa Company recently designed, built and supplied a bespoke outdoor kitchen in southern England. This customer was looking for an outdoor entertaining space to compliment the modern interior of their home and wanted to use premium products with exceptional performance to fulfil this. In the customers words they were looking for a result that was ‘stunning but practical’. The Lapa Company, as the exclusive distributors of Fire Magic premium outdoor kitchens across Europe, were a perfect fit for this brief. Upon meeting with the client at our showroom, we explored the range of premium barbecues and accessories that The Lapa Company could offer, and settled on a Fire Magic Echelon Diamond Series Grill with Rotisseries and Backburner, a double side burner, a cut & clean combo with hidden bin, access doors, an under mount sink and tap, 2 outdoor fridges and a wood fired oven. The site survey allowed us to draw up an accurate plan for their outdoor kitchen, ensuring inclusion of a bar area for entertaining guests. The design had a rendered finish to match the main residence, and was topped with a black granite work surfaces. From initial enquiry to completion the project took 10 weeks, including the importing of their Fire Magic selections from the USA, where the barbecues are manufactured from marine grade stainless steel to the highest level, and provided with a life-time warranty. The Lapa Company and Fire Magic are delighted to be showcasing their range of garden buildings and premium outdoor kitchens at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September. Come along and visit them.

Wildflower Turf Wildflower Turf is a mat of pre-established wildflower plants, nursery grown and set in appropriate quantities to provide an even distribution of species. The turf is a densely networked root mat that supports established and instantly competitive wildflowers, whilst acting as a weed suppressing carpet, smothering any seeds that are in the soil and on the point of germinating. The result is a complete meadow much further along the evolutionary scale than one could hope after 5 years of seeding or naturalising, giving the landscaper a guarantee of an instant wildflower meadow. Accurate measurements are required to ensure there is no excess or shortage of turf whilst working on site. The turf can be laid throughout the year except when there is frost or snow on the ground. If laying in the summer, turf will require a good water every couple of days until the roots are down. The turf is relatively light, being soil-less it is easily manipulated on uneven ground and embankments. One annual cut is required, the timing of which can be experimented with. A mid-season cut can keep control of meadow growth but in most situations it is an autumn cut that is essential. The sward should be taken down to 2-3 cms and completely cleared of all clippings. This ensures that rotting plant material will not disease existing plants within the meadow and not feed back into the soil to re-invigorate grass growth. Wildflower Turf offers a pragmatic approach providing sensible and realistic solutions that are essential if our natural landscapes are to benefit from the current resurgence of interest in wildflower meadows. It is now possible to avoid the many nemeses of the landscaper seeking to create wildflower meadows and the lengthy wait for results and risks of failure have been eradicated. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Adbruf Flamingo Land Resort is a zoo, theme park and luxury resort covering 375 acres (152 hectares) in Kirby Misperton, Malton, North Yorkshire. Their aim was to replace an old decaying macadam area, covering approximately 1800m², known as Riverside One, which was prone to flooding and in need of a major facelift: to create an outdoor space that was a colourful, highly durable, slip resistant, permeable, even surface that wouldn’t pool and would be practically maintenance free. It also had to include colours, shapes, logos and lettering with UVR properties to minimise fade. The contractors, EC Surfacing of Brigg, Lincolnshire recommended the use of GeoPave Standard and GeoPave UVR; resin bound aggregate surfacing system manufactured by Adbruf. GeoPave is a two part polyurethane hybrid resin binder system which when combined with a blend of selected aggregates gives a highly attractive, smooth finish. The old macadam surface had to be excavated, removed and a suitable substrate reinstated. Geopave and GeoPave UVR based resin bound paving was then laid 12mm thick using both natural and coloured aggregate mixes to create a vibrant surface area. GeoPave and GeoPave UVR are resin bound systems formulated using bio-mass materials. It is environmentally friendly, durable, but flexible due to its thermoplastic characteristics, it expands and contracts with the substrate. GeoPave and GeoPave UVR are pervious and so an ideal solution for tree pits, swimming pool surrounds or to be used as part of a SuDs compliant surfacing system. GreenBlue Urban RootStart is a microbial-based product designed to breathe life into soil and to lay the ‘biological’ foundation for sustainable urban planting. Mycorrhiza occurs naturally in forest situations and is hugely beneficial to root systems, increasing the ability of roots to absorb vital water and nutrients from the soil. With the majority of new urban tree planting projects, locally sourced ‘manufactured’ soils are used and although they are made to exacting mineral specifications and contain green waste and organic matter, they are frequently biologically inert and deprived of natural mycorrhiza. With this in mind, GreenBlue Urban suggest that in order to achieve an increased establishment rate of an urban root system, a small amount of RootStart mycorrhiza should be added.

Guillot Bourne With over 350 varieties of deciduous and coniferous trees and shrubs, the Guillot Bourne nursery wants to focus on diversity and quality rather than quantity. As they have very specific climate and soil conditions, every year they plant some new varieties, so they can test them and see how they acclimate themselves in those conditions. Doing this year after year, they have now gained a very wide knowledge about the best varieties to choose regarding the plantation’s conditions for your landscaping projects. They have been strongly cooperating on different projects like a French botanical garden of a public castle where the goal was to focus on matching the rights botanical varieties with the climate and pedology conditions. Last year they transplanted many different kind of topiaries essentially for botanical gardens, although diversity of trees is also essential in avenues for a variety of different reasons: esthetic, less propagation of diseases and better solutions for the landscaping of cities. At Guillot Bourne, oak trees are produced as standard trees in 30 different varieties, they produce other varieties in standard and multistem forms.
