AIPH Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. We support and promote the work of our members – the grower organisations around the world. Our statistical yearbook gives an unrivalled view of industry trends and developments. We celebrate the most progressive growers through AIPH International Grower of the Year Awards. Our Green City initiative promotes the essential role of plants in creating vibrant urban areas in which people and businesses can thrive. We are responsible for the world’s finest horticultural expositions and provide organisers with expert guidance to create world class spectacles. The AIPH are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show and wish all exhibitors and delegates a successful event.

APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) has been formed to help consumers make that informed choice. Formed in 1995, the APL, which operates as a Specialist Group of the Horticultural Trades Association, represents landscapers who have met a required standard of professionalism. Members of the Association are registered with the government endorsed TrustMark Scheme and are regularly inspected and agree to follow a customer charter with clients. All APL members also hold the appropriate insurance and have traded for a minimum of two years. The APL provides homeowners with an even greater choice when selecting a landscaper. As a customer, you can feel confident that the APL landscaper you have chosen has met prescribed professional standards. The APL chooses to exhibit at the LANDSCAPE Show as it is the essential trade event for landscape designers who we can highlight the Trustmark accreditation to and show them how it can benefit their business. The APL host regular cluster group meetings around the country. These meetings offer members networking opportunities and sharing of ideas and best practice in the industry through the course of the year. Joining the APL at the LANDSCAPE Show will boost and enhance what is already a thriving community.

Crews Hill Wholesale Plants Over the past 5 years Crews Hill have seen the quality of plants produced in Spain improve immensely. As suppliers they have taken full advantage of these improvements by stocking a large selection of Spanish plants this year which has seen increased sales and produced very positive feedback on the performance of these plants in the UK. Crews Hill have seen significant demand for two particular key lines such as Myrtus Communis and Jasminum Glaucum from landscapers and designers which leads them to believe that Spanish plant products are both suitable and affordable in the UK and add something new to either a commercial planting plan or a suburban garden. Another plant which is in demand this year as a focal piece is the Cloud Tree Olive, suitable for both small and large gardens, this plant enhances any environment. Another landscaper favourite is the Acer Sango-Kaku which can be containerised or planted directly into the ground which produces year wonderful year round interest for both its foliage and red stem. Come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BALI Back in the early seventies when BALI was formed, the landscape industry as a cohesive entity really didn’t exist. There were however companies providing garden construction and maintenance who wanted their professionalism recognised and, even more importantly, wanted to differentiate themselves from the ‘cowboy’ element attracted by a largely unregulated industry. Since 1972, BALI has been setting the industry benchmark for landscape construction and maintenance. In 1976 the first BALI National Landscape Awards took place and this year celebrate their 40th anniversary. Industry names such as designer Andy Sturgeon cite the BALI Awards as instrumental in fuelling their early ambitions as they entered the industry. Suppliers of industry-related products and services have always been a part of BALI’s membership history in acknowledgement of the fact that, no matter how good the design and the skills of the contractor, quality products and specialist services are fundamental to the success of a landscape project. BALI’s Affiliate (supplier) members support BALI in a host of ways and provide invaluable technical expertise to the membership. Their products grace the show gardens at Chelsea and probably every prestige scheme across the country. 2016 also marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of BALI’s Registered Designer membership. This was a major landmark for BALI and acknowledged the importance of designers and contractors working together, each understanding the challenges of the other, rather than the two disciplines working in isolation in their own bunkers. BALI’s current membership stands at just shy of 850. It is the UK’s largest trade body for the landscape industry and the only one that brings design, construction and maintenance together. And 44 years after it was founded its members continue to be the ones setting the industry benchmark for landscape design, construction, maintenance and product excellence. BALI believes that the LANDSCAPE Show offers its Affiliate members an outstanding opportunity to present their products and services to top flight designers and contractors. Their clients expect the very best in innovation, design and quality and this important event in the industry calendar is exactly the place to find it.

Esthec速 Terrace A sophisticated appearance and exceedingly strong material: the high quality system of Esthec Terrace is incomparable with systems made of wood or other composite products. Esthec Terrace is made of fibreglass reinforced composite which makes it much stronger and extremely durable. With its distinctive product advantages Esthec Terrace is applied worldwide in gardens of private homes and terraces at hotels, resorts and beach clubs. Esthec Terrace is also used for balconies, roof terraces, jetties and as decking material around swimming pools and in outdoor spa areas. The terrace is resistant to different weather conditions and is easy to maintain. In addition, Esthec Terrace is extremely wear resistant. The lightweight and indestructible material does not warp like PVC or wood, does not splinter and is comfortable to walk on with bare feet. Esthec Terrace does not absorb water. That is why the material will keep a clean appearance and will not be affected by algae and bacteria. No absorption of water also means that the terrace system remains slip resistant in wet conditions. Whereas wood can quickly become slippery in rainy weather, Esthec Terrace provides excellent grip. Esthec Terrace can be used in shaded areas without any problems. For architects and landscape gardeners Esthec Terrace offers several functional properties. The material provides the highest level of design freedom, because there are no limits in design and colour. Esthec Terrace is available in 7 colours, but also custom made colours are available, providing unlimited design opportunities. Due to the computer-controlled processing, the designs end result is known in advance. Come and see the range for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Cirencester Civil Engineering Cirencester Civil Engineering Ltd were very pleased to be asked by Volker Highways, to install 700m2 of their Resinset ‘Beach Comber’ resin bound surfacing at Cromer Promenade, as part of the Regeneration Project for the resurfacing of Cromer’s iconic Promenade. Winter storms in December 2013 swept away beach huts and damaged the 1930’s Historic Building on the Promenade, and left the Promenade surface in front of the Pier, in very poor condition. The weather was against them for several days, and was dependant on the sea conditions, but eventually the sun came out and the result was a beautiful new ‘Art Deco’ design in front of the Pier. Please come and talk to us on our stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park.

GLDA The Garden and Landscape Designers Association (GLDA) is synonymous with professional garden design and is currently celebrating 20 years since its foundation. The association represents some of Ireland’s leading garden and landscape designers in Ireland, and its growing membership provides a wide range of services nationwide. Through its ongoing training opportunities in various aspects of design, its practical workshops and field trips, its intelligence gathering network, and most publicly, its highly acclaimed annual international design seminar, the GLDA disseminates new information on methods, techniques and current best practice in landscape design and horticulture, and has created a new demand for improved quality and increased availability of a much wider and more interesting selection of plants. The GLDA has set standards for its members which allow them to stand out from the crowd. In addition, in a profession that can be quite insular, it allows the pooling of ideas and knowledge and a valuable social network. As part of this ever expanding network we are delighted to be involved with the LANDSCAPE Show where we can connect with a wider audience and showcase our design skills.

Step Change Design Garden designers Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell from Step Change Design self-funded a research project to answer a deceptively simple question: “Why aren’t care home gardens more actively used, even when they followed the latest design guidance?” Debbie explained, “The journey we embarked on has transformed our understanding of ourselves and forced us to address some underlying beliefs and conditioning we held about our role as designers.” Mark added, “As a result of this project we are changed designers and people, too. By drawing on our other skill sets from management and training, particularly, we were able to grasp the role of care culture (the care setting’s work habits, regular practices and procedures) in determining attitudes towards the outdoors and activity levels in the garden.” For a long time during the study, the designers were facing the prospect that a garden designer is not essential to activate a care setting garden or increase usage by the residents. Debbie said, “We have created a practical tool called The Map that helps a designer work out how best to support their care setting clients.” You can hear about where their research journey took them and how they discovered the approach that a designer needs to make to work effectively with care sector clients during their presentation and Q & A session on Wednesday 14th September at 1pm at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park.

Bronzino The Bronzino artisan workshop was founded in 2005 by sculptor /designer Kenneth Topp to maintain traditional European metalwork techniques . They began by looking back at traditional copper riveted cauldrons – originally made for boiling water in great kitchens and laundries. During the 20th century the antique versions were often used as planters in gardens. Bronzino was the first workshop in recent times to remake these classic containers , updating slightly for contemporary use although still making them entirely by hand and without use of moulds. Which means the workshop can make any shape or size. For 2016 Bronzino has again looked back at an antique design however this time re- fashioned in its original proportions and detail. These new designs are vase shaped and perfect for narrower spaces and where vertical accents required. These are available in copper, brass or zinc in Bronzino standard sizes or made up to order. In 2005 the first Bronzino Collection was photographed in the beautiful gardens of The Vineyard in West London and one of the first Bronzino cauldrons sits at the end of a long walk. Once the home of Lord Beaverbrook the garden features in the Private Gardens of England by Tania Compton published in 2015. In 2016 Bronzino were privileged to return to The Vineyard to photograph their newest designs a selection of which will be on their stand at LANDSCAPE 2016 in Battersea Park this September.

Perennial Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough.
Terrazza MC This year has seen a particularly warm and wet winter which means algae and mosses will be flourishing right now. With the gardening season around the corner there is an excellent opportunity for you to provide your customers with a complete and ecological cleaning solution. The TerrazzaMC brush gets all surfaces remarkably clean providing neat and tidy garden care and is the signature of the modern gardener. The solution (having been recently launched at the LANDSCAPE 2015 show in the UK, has been very popular throughout Europe for some years) uses only a small amount of water and no detergent. It is able to clean all, yes all types of surfaces: wood, concrete, natural stone (in tile form or clinker), modern composite pavements and even artificial turf. It can clean all of these surfaces as new, in no time at all, cleaning between joints and removing weeds with absolutely no damage to the surface or joints. It can even remove lichens. It can also remove cement residue, residue from chemical grouting and efflorescence. For more information please visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
Challenges such as illness, injury, debt, bereavement or redundancy could strike any of us at any time. Perennial is there to offer free and confidential advice, as well as practical and emotional support, for as long as it is needed and that extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Many of us support charities that are close to our hearts as a way of giving something back, and where better to direct that support than close to home to help the people within our own industry? An easy way for companies to show their support is by signing up to the Perennial Partner scheme, where the business makes an annual donation by choosing the level appropriate for their business - Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze. The continuation of the charity’s work relies heavily on support from the trade, but there is still a way to go before Perennial, and the help it offers, is known by everyone in the industry. By exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September, Perennial aims to raise awareness and increase support. Please visit Perennial’s stand at the show to find out more.

Streetscape Streetscape is an award winning social enterprise. We provide apprenticeships in landscape gardening to 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, helping them to build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfil their dreams and move into and retain work: growing lives, transforming landscapes. In so doing we design, landscape and maintain gardens across South London for residential, commercial and communitybased clients. Since 2010 we have earned a reputation for delivering beautifully constructed gardens to suit all plot sizes and budgets. We are driven by one, simple, overarching goal: that each and every long-term unemployed young person we provide an apprenticeship to then moves into, and retains work, following their time with us. As a charity operating as a landscape contractor, the LANDSCAPE Show also links us to many new suppliers, meaning we can provide an even better service to our clients. The show gets bigger and better every year and we’re looking forward to another successful show in 2016!

Timber Decking and Cladding Association The arguments for utilising timber as the material to grow our carbon economy are multi-faceted. They include the fact that roughly one tonne of carbon is stored for every metre cubed of timber used – this makes timber one of the safest and most effective carbon stores available. Also in managed European forests there are more trees planted than harvested, making timber the only truly renewable mainstream building material. And the list goes on.
Probst Handling Equipment Probst Handling Equipment have been a supplier of materials handling equipment within the UK for 30 years, their equipment is manufactured at their head office in Germany, and has been in operation for over 50 years. Over this time they have become a trusted name for quality products. Their range of items include: landscaping and block paving equipment, vacuum systems, mechanical grabs, hydraulic grabs, all of which are used primarily for the lifting of concrete products. For 2016, they have a variation on a similar theme- the AL33 block cutter, which is now available in a hardened galvanised finish, so your Probst equipment will not only perform great, but will also look great. This is a superb tool to use to minimise dust when cutting block paving, either on domestic or commercial jobs.
There are even stronger arguments to use timber correctly to get the most out of this miracle of nature. The Timber and Cladding Association (TDCA) exists to provide you with independent guidance through a range of resources and services that will help you to build your decking and cladding structures with long term performance in mind. The TDCA website at www.tda.org.uk covers all you need to know in order to effectively design, install and maintain timber decking or cladding. With publications free to download, technical guidance, where to source good quality materials and even a 90 second video to give you basic know-how in an instant, it is a ‘must visit’ for anyone thinking about designing or installing a decking or cladding. As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance.
LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 13th of September 2016, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online in August at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.
On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.” Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend.
Register for your FREE tickets to attend by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk
Categories that are eligible: All schools with students up to Key Stage 2 (i.e. up to age 11) All schools with students up to Key Stage 4 (up to age 16) All special schools
As part of the continuing initiative to engage and enthuse young people with the world of horticulture and landscaping the LANDSCAPE Show are launching a new competition to all schools. With the aim of generating conversations covering environmental and ecology issues the competition will hopefully enable students to talk about birds, their habitats and their needs. The hope is that conversations will be had about the local environment, the need to provide for wildlife in our future plans and what they bring to us on a wider scale. Topics should cover schools, high rise living, shopping centres, individual housing and office developments and their impact on the local wildlife and how we can make sure that we continue to live in harmony.
The Brief Build a bird house! Be as creative as you like but do say which birds you would like to live in it by providing a 200 word description of the ‘house’ . Perhaps as part of an English project you could write about where you would put the bird house and what would happen inside it. (Perhaps instead provide a short video presentation for those that are unable to write.) Don’t forget to make the entrance the right size for the birds you want to attract. Send through the working drawings with dimensions and describe what materials it is made from. The finished ‘house’ should be no more than 30cms x 30cms x 30cms and suitable for wall mounting.
The Prize The winners will receive an exclusive visit from Ann-Marie Powell who will present a special trophy. (Ann-Marie is from BBC2’s The Great Chelsea Garden Challenge in 2015 and BBC coverage of the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show alongside the likes of Alan Titchmarsh, Monty Don and other familiar faces.)
Only one entry per school in each age group is allowed. All entries must be registered by close of business on 27th May 2016. Please email Jeremy@landscapeshow.co.uk in order to do so. Please advise the name of the school, the age group, the person responsible at the school and a contact telephone number. You will then be sent a confirmation email that you have been accepted and forwarded further relevant information.
Do check out the website for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, who have lots of facts and figures about birds and how to look after them. www.rspb.org.uk/forprofessionals/teachers/
Delivery All finished bird houses must be delivered to a London address at the expense of the entrant. No responsibility will be taken for damaged deliveries or lost entries. All finalists will be displayed at this years’ LANDSCAPE Trade Show Event in Battersea Park where they will be judged by a panel of industry experts. They will then be on public view within Battersea Park after the event so that schools may visit and see the winning entries. (Further details to follow.)

Wildflower Turf The journey of the British bee will be brought to life this summer at Kew Gardens when the award winning Hive installation from the 2015 Milan Expo, is relocated to the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Hive was the centrepiece of the UK Pavilion at last year’s global event in Milan and stood as a visual symbol of the pollinators’ role in feeding humanity and the challenges facing bees today. It will fulfil a similar role at Kew, hoping to show visitors how they can make a difference to the life of bees with a multi-sensory experience, including architecture, science, music and wildflower landscapes. Visitors will be drawn into The Hive via a lush and vibrant wildflower meadow that Wildflower Turf Ltd are delighted to be growing for Kew Gardens. James Hewetson-Brown, Managing Director at Wildflower Turf Ltd says “We are delighted to have been asked to grow the meadow to surround this magnificent structure by Wolfgang Buttress – it really will be a sight to behold this summer for wildflower and bee enthusiasts. More importantly, it offers the chance for visitors to reconnect with nature and understand in detail why looking after our pollinators is so important and hopefully encourage even more people to consider bees when designing and planting gardens and amenity landscapes.” The Hive’s official opening date to the public is Saturday 18th June but you can see samples of the wildflower meadow they will be using on the Wildflower Turf stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Frederic Whyte The Perennial Giving Garden at this summer’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will raise awareness of the only trade charity dedicated to helping all horticulturists in need and highlight the importance of gifts in wills. Designed by Frederic Whyte and Darran Jaques, this contemporary water garden is a stylish urban space, conceived for a philanthropic professional couple who want to leave a lasting legacy in the form of a garden. Both Frederic and Darran are established in the industry and long-term supporters of Perennial. They understand how important legacies are to Perennial’s ability to continue its work and have both made provision to leave gifts to the charity in their own wills. Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at Perennial comments: “We are delighted to be working with Frederic and Darran to create a garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2016 that highlights the work we do. None of the wonderful show gardens would be possible without the skilled horticulturists, growers and everyone else in the profession involved in creating them. Perennial exists to support all of those people if ever they face difficult times. Thanks go to Frederic and Darran for leading by example and generously promising a gift to Perennial in their wills. Legacy donations form a large and hugely important part of our charitable income and all gifts of whatever size will make a difference to our future.” This will be Suffolk-based Frederic Whyte’s third garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and he is also creating his third show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. For Frederic, show gardens provide opportunities to advocate worthwhile causes and he has previously worked with The Bounce Back Foundation and Amnesty International among others. Frederic is one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September, come along and listen to his story.

Lumena Lights Lumena’s expanding range of lights elegantly crafted from solid brass and real copper are naturally durable, and co-ordinate beautifully with the diverse colours and textures of the garden. Garden designers’ favourites, the ‘Smartspike 60’ single spike light and ‘Smartspike 260’ 1m twin spike light, are the newest additions to the solid brass range, both available now in 12v and 240v with a rustic bronze finish. Materially, brass is made up from a combination of copper and zinc, neither of which can rust or corrode. The ‘Hilospot’ up and down wall light is now available in real copper, which will naturally oxidise to change colour over time, creating a darker finish and eventually a ‘verdigris’ effect. Clear lacquer can be applied to retain the shine if desired. Both materials are ideal for ‘Rustic’ landscape design, the concept of which can be applied to either traditional or modern gardens, and tends to reflect natural surroundings. Lumena’s range would look equally as impressive in any style of garden. The term for lighting such as this is ’Transitional’ lighting, which by definition is versatile and decorative, bridging the gap between old and new. It can blend in where desired, but also stand out in order to provide a charming twist of personality. All fittings accommodate replaceable LED bulbs, including longer types. Lumena have many new additions for 2016 which are available online and will be showcased at the LANDSCAPE Show in September.

Nilufer Danis The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and Turkish Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Union (OAiB) recent show garden aims to provide inspiration and ideas for city designers, planners and home owners showing what can be done to turn the cities where we live into truly Green Cities. The AIPH/OAiB Green Oasis garden is based on ‘Green City ’concepts and spans 1045m2. The aim of the design is to demonstrate the value of ‘living green’ in cities and encourage investment in sustainable green spaces. The garden includes 21 trees, water fountains, a green roof, a rain garden, a pool, pathways, solar panels, sculptures, a planted table and insect hotels. The green roof lessens the urban heat island effect as well as capturing particulates and pollutants in the air, producing oxygen and providing insulation to enable energy saving. Solar panels on the top of the building absorb the sun’s rays to generate electricity.
The rain garden provides sustainable drainage to prevent flooding and storm water runoff and the planted table enables food to grow right where you eat it! The table includes a mix of edible green plants and fruit to encourage healthier and more sustainable living, demonstrating a way to grow food at your own home. The insect hotels promote biodiversity providing place for hibernating insects like ladybirds and butterflies. The permeable paving surface allows the movement of storm water through the surface and reduces water runoff. Tree planting provides a habitat for wildlife and helps cool the air, reducing the so called ‘heat island effect’. The proposed planting scheme contains the exported plants from Antalya to the world to promote international plants growers. The garden was designed by Nilufer Danis from Lotus Designs who will be one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

David Austin Rose Nursery
David Austin Roses are very pleased to be introducing a wonderful new rose to mark the centenary of the birth of one of our best-loved authors – Roald Dahl ‘Roald Dahl’ is a remarkably free-flowering variety with flowers of a perfect peach colouring. The young buds are a beautiful soft orange-red, the red reminiscent of the blush found on an actual peach. When fully open, they form medium-sized, cupped rosette blooms which are produced almost continuously. Despite their delicate appearance, they are robust enough to withstand even the most inclement weather our climate may throw at them. They have a lovely medium strength Tea fragrance with leafy elements and dark fruit notes. Over time it matures into a very attractive, rounded, bushy shrub with mid-green foliage and few thorns. Overall, this is a charismatic rose that will be a valuable addition to any garden. This variety was named with the approval of Roald Dahl’s wife, Liccy Dahl, as its colouring immediately brought to mind the eponymous peach in James and the Giant Peach, one of Roald Dahl’s best-loved novels. A percentage of the sale from each rose will be donated to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, which helps make life better for seriously ill children in the UK. Come and see it for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Gripsure UK One of the UK’s leading anti slip decking companies is launching its first decking tiles. Created by Gripsure, they give the option of decking that is not only quick and easy to install but also stays safe in wet weather. Gripsure predicts the new timber product, which feature its unique anti slip aggregate inserts, will be a popular choice for roof gardens and balconies where the size and weight of traditional decking can be a problem. Quicker to install than decking boards, because there is no need for a sub frame, the decking tiles are also far easier to remove for access to the ground below. Available in softwood or hardwood, the tiles are approximately half a square metre. Managing Director Mike Nicholson said: “At Gripsure, we are constantly reviewing our product range to ensure it meets the fast-changing needs of home owners as well as architects and commercial developers. We have seen the recent growth of decking tiles, as a no-fuss option that is ideal for smaller spaces, and felt there was a gap in the market for an anti slip decking tile. “The last few years have seen good growth in the timber decking market, but more and more people are discovering that traditional decking gets lethally slippery in wet weather. Our new decking tiles combine our innovative safety features, with the beautiful look and feel of real timber, and additional convenience.” Come and see the range for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Perennial Will you rise to the challenge for HortAid 2016? Trade charity Perennial is challenging people across the industry to show their support by signing up for one of the HortAid 2016 challenge events. Whether your preference is running, skydiving, cycling or tackling a muddy assault course, Perennial has a calendar of exciting fundraising events. Taking part is a great way to get fit and perhaps push yourself to do something new, while raising vital funds that will help support horticulturists in need. Perennial has teamed up with organisers of the Nuts Challenge to present a special Go Nuts for HortAid Challenge on 18 September in Surrey. Teams will battle it out in one of the muddiest assault courses around. For the adrenaline junkies out there, Perennial is putting together a team of skydivers to take part in the Guinness World Record attempt for the most tandem skydives in 24 hours. They will take to the skies on Sunday 11th June with hundreds of other skydivers to set a new world record while raising money for Perennial. Someone who has a very personal reason for getting involved is Peter Mills, who has signed up for the London to Brighton bike ride on 11 September. Less than two years ago he contacted Perennial for help after an accident at work left him severely injured. He explains: “By raising money for HortAid, I want to help give back to the brilliant charity that was there for me and my family when we most needed it. To find out more about any of the events, come and talk to Perennial on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer A disease that mainly affects young people, for which there is still no cure, is under the spotlight with a show garden at the world’s largest flower show and designers Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Dan Bowyer will make a rare show garden appearance at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this summer in order to highlight it Of the 3000 to 6000 cases diagnosed each year, one in six sufferers of Crohn’s Disease are under 16 years old. A life-long condition, and for some life-threatening, treatment is expensive and becomes more complicated over time. Though, with the right care, it is a condition that a person can live with. This city garden for a young Crohn’s sufferer aims to engage visitors with its unexpected planting scheme and colour palette. It tells the story of how vital and vibrant a young person’s life can be even with this terrible disease. The pair are using hardy exotics, alongside British native plants, in a way that will challenge conventional show garden planting schemes and palettes. They hope it will encourage gardeners to rethink their plant choices given the impact of climate change. The garden’s canopy of tree ferns, its jungle-like plants and traditional ground foliage demonstrate a design approach for our warming cities. Cool tropical plants, chosen for their foliage and colour – and not for their short-lived flowers - appeal to a younger gardener. Hardy exotics like a Butia Yatay Palm, tree ferns, canna and ginger lilies sit with English native ferns and hostas in the shady and sunny parts of the garden. The bright blue steel pool and the misters, which bring drama and add a tropical touch, reinforce the importance of hydration to bowel health. The gastrointestinal shaped, precision-cut, stone path and fire-pit allude to where Crohn’s strikes and what it can feel like. It is no coincidence that individuals associated with the charity are advocates of the therapeutic properties of gardens and gardening. Charity founder Gary Douch, who has Crohn’s Disease, relaxes in his family garden; trustee Professor Devinder Kumar, a leading bowel disease surgeon and consultant, is a proficient gardener and Andrew Fisher Tomlin designs active horticultural therapy landscapes. Over 10 suppliers have made generous donations of plants, materials and a unique humidity system for the more unusual shade plants. The charity will work hard to make sure the garden goes on to raise funds for the appeal. If the garden is not bought at the show it will be relocated to a private garden and become a fundraiser for an event later in the year.

QuickGrass Recently QuickGrass were approached by a family wanting artificial grass for their children. Not an uncommon occurrence at QuickGrass, however this time, things were a little different. Matt and Lisa have two children, Sam and his little sister. Sam is five, and he has autism. Sam is nonverbal too, and often finds life challenging because of this. One of Sam’s favourite things to do is to play in the mud, as sensory wise this was fun for him. He also loves to be constantly on the move. His mum and dad were finding things difficult and so was Sam, especially as he was always dirty and had to have his clothes changed very time he played in the mud which meant his cyclical routine was interrupted. With Sam being nonverbal, he couldn’t communicate how this made him feel, and he would often become distressed. Matt and Lisa had tried other artificial grass manufacturers but were disappointed with the quality. That was, until they discovered QuickGrass! They immediately fell in love with Richmond grass and within a week had installed it themselves in their back garden which was previously very soggy and unsafe. Sam, even though he can’t say it, is delighted with the grass and finds laying on it very soothing. Matt and Lisa can now sit watching their children play in a safe environment, something they’ve always wanted to do, whilst relaxing themselves at the same time! The Soft Touch artificial grass used in this story will be on display at the LANDSCAPE show on stand A11 in Battersea Park this September.

Oxford Planters Oxford Planters have announced the launch of a new collection of planters, seats and tables designed by leading UK designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin and handcrafted in their Cotswolds workshop. The new planter has already been short-listed for the prestigious ‘RHS Chelsea Product of the Year 2016’ and will be available for the first time at the show. “The Stud Collection” was designed with both practicality and sustainability in mind. Last year’s wet weather contributed to an outbreak of slugs and snails in many gardens but Fisher Tomlin couldn’t find a stylish solution. The result, a series of planters with a copper studded band as a design detail proved effective in repelling the pests during trials. Andrew said “we wanted to use traditional gardening methods in a new, stylish and high performing planter that were also capable of withstanding the challenges of an urban climate.” The new collection is made from long-lasting sustainable Accoya® & Medite®Tricoya®Extreme which comes with a 50 year guarantee. Both materials outperform most natural hardwoods and are 100% sustainable. As Sarah Pierce of Oxford Planters says “we know that designers like Andrew are very demanding of the quality of product that they source. We wanted to develop his designs using a gold standard in sustainable timber and a product that we have lots of experience in using.” The collection is one of the first outdoor furniture ranges to use the new sustainable materials and has been developed to include a range of 2 and 3-seater benches, side and coffee tables, is available in a wide range of colours and all include the signature copper studded band. Come and see the range for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Butter Wakefield We spoke to Butter Wakefield, one of the featured new designers who is speaking at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September. She said “Recently, I had the great pleasure to design and create a second garden for lovely clients in Bath. The first was completed only in May 2014. My brief was to address the issues in the Main garden to the rear of the house as everything was very overgrown, and felt rather neglected. My clients wanted me to create a beautiful outdoor space where they could entertain, relax and enjoy the view. They wanted more lawn and less fussy planting, the garden was overstuffed with variegated shrubs and leggy old roses. The paved area needed extending to accommodate their stunning Gaze Burvill dining table which they brought with them from their previous house.
The garden is graced by glorious Bath stone walls and four rather splendid mature Acers, and a pair of chubby Buxus domes. I took my lead from the Box and added 4 Taxus Bee Hive shapes to frame the border facing the house. The rest of the planting was very similar to the planting I used in their first garden. There was a testing time half way through the build when the landscapers recommended by the main contractor let us down. So we lost a few weeks and a bit of momentum, but found a firm we had used to maintain our first garden. Blue Water Landscapes graciously picked up the reins, and delivered a finely finished main garden on time. The project was planted and handed over on Friday 29th April, the client is now a firm friend and we are all thrilled to bits!” Come and listen to Butter at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Europlanters Situated on the banks of the River Thames in the famous and prominent building, Sea Containers House, the Mondrian Hotel brings a bold new energy to what was a former office block in London, blending the style and sophistication of a boutique hotel with Southbank’s eclectic vibe. Sitting between the OXO Tower and Black Friars Bridge, this hotel was designed by Tom Dixon and was built to look and feel ‘like a transatlantic liner that has just docked. Guests can opt to stay in a suite offering a river view balcony directly on the Thames, which uniquely reflect the urban feel of the Southbank neighbourhood and its rapidly changing skyline. Each private balcony is divided by planters with ivy screening to give a feel of a secluded garden in an urban environment. One hundred and twenty eight trough planters 1350mm/450mm/500mm high were used to create screening on each luxury, river view balcony each one interlinking to make it look like a continuous run. Hedra Screens planted the ivy screens in the troughs forming instant screening to create privacy for the guests. The planters were manufactured ahead of schedule for the project and Europlanters team worked closely with Hedra Screens with the installation. Retouching then had to be done after the construction group had finished, which completed the project before opening. To complement the lavish style of the hotel and its surroundings the aesthetics needed to be luxurious and therefore the sumptuous metallic colour RAL 9003 was chosen by the client to create shimmering hue and texture. ‘We were privileged to be involved in such a prestigious project and I am proud to say that our team produced all planters ahead of schedule once again!’ said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters ‘We have a wide range of metallic finishes available for our Glass reinforced Plastic planters and as they have a crisp edge to them they look like metal but have the longevity and properties of GRP. It’s amazing how many people think that the planters are metal’ Europlanters work with architects, landscapers, garden designers and contractors and are happy to discuss projects to suit a variety of budgets. Why not come along to the LANDSCAPE show and meet the team to discuss your project.

A stunning London property has recently been completely renovated and a large basement constructed which meant that both front and back gardens had to be revised and rebuilt. Much of the back of the house is now glass and with that in mind a palette of evergreen and clipped shapes were used to provide colour and form all through the year. The clients use the lawn for football and so the clipped shapes of Buxus protect the more delicate perennials from too much resultant damage. Herbs planted underneath olive trees add shade to the terrace and are conveniently situated near to the BBQ for Al Fresco meals. The front garden allows space for two cars to be parked off the road, a valuable asset for any London property. Dense Taxus hedges provide some privacy from the street and the hard landscaping materials reflect the street scene with York Stone and Limestone setts. This Hampstead garden is just another example of the work of Kate Gould, who is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. British Association of Landscape Industries Contractors and designers will be spoilt for choice on the BALI Pavilion at this year’s Landscape Show, where members will be exhibiting stylish and innovative products for use in the most prestigious of landscape schemes. Private urban gardens, rural idylls or major public realm projects are created using high quality materials from BALI Affiliates (suppliers).
Landform Consultants
Willerby Landscapes
The relationships established between BALI designers, contractors and product and service suppliers have delivered many of the country’s most stunning landscapes. BALI members establish a level of professional trust and integrity between them that removes any concerns over product quality, customer service or ability to deliver. And that trust is priceless when contracts contain punitive clauses covering delays and poor performance resulting from inferior products or a supplier’s failure to deliver on time. BALI Affiliates know about their products and how they should be used. They will be on hand at the show to provide the technical expertise and guidance needed to ensure designers and contractors use them to best effect and to achieve the very best results. Their BALI membership requires that they comply with the BALI Code of Conduct, acting in an entirely professional, honest and customer-focused manner, and that they follow sound business practices. Come and talk to BALI on their stand alongside the Pavilion of Members at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Tom Massey The UNHCR ‘Border Control’ Garden - is a conceptual show garden appearing at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show - 5th-10th July 2016. Designed by Tom Massey in collaboration with John Ward, built by Landform Consultants and sponsored by the charity UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency - the garden highlights the current refugee crisis and the desperate risks many people take to find shelter. A beautiful, fertile and tranquil island of seemingly native British planting sits across a treacherous moat bordered by razor wire fencing. Outside the fence, struggling amongst rubble, starved of nutrients and water, non-native plants fight to survive, desperate to reach the protected island. As visitors approach, their view is from the non-native refugees’ perspective, a land full of danger, despair and suffering with only glimpses of the sanctuary beyond. However, dispersed amongst the rubble, surviving against the odds, a number of beautiful non-native plants shine, colourful displays of strength and hope in the face of adversity. Inside the garden a path runs under a traditional wooden gazebo, taking visitors through the space. The physical structure represents sanctuary and shelter. At first glance the central planting appears to be a traditional British wildflower meadow, but on closer inspection, many of the plants from the outer zone have made it across, integrated amongst the native wildflowers, blending in, harmonising and adding to the overall beauty of the fertile sanctuary. Inside the garden the visitor is enveloped in a lush and beautiful oasis; but how much can this beauty truly be appreciated when surrounded by the suffering beyond? Tom Massey is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen to him by registering for your free ticket at www.landscapeshow.co.uk

Mark Ridler Thomas More Square is a commercial estate owned by Land Securities and was previously soulless and uninhabited. Neighbouring residents complained about the columns that lit the spaces uniformly but with uncomfortable glare. Land Securities through the conversion of ground floor office space to retail / restaurants and fundamental re-landscaping, wished to create a vibrant and well-loved space inhabited at night by residents and workers alike that would maximise the office rental values. The challenge was to provide safe light for the high pedestrian flows but to do so in a sophisticated way that removed the need for columns. In the Arrival Square this was achieved with many layers of light. The entrances were refurbished to ensure that they created primary focus and their contribution to the ambient allowed us to minimise other interventions. Thereafter the raised planters lit the space using a combination of bollards, recessed floor wash and integrated handrail lighting. Feature lighting was provided by uplighting planter walls and trees. Timber seating had lighting integrated within to create a glow and cast patterns on the paving that encouraged people to sit and socialise. Secondary entrances to the estates are marked with corten portals uplit in warm light with soffits within using a common linear recessed motif. This has created a visual focus that aids estate legibility and provide a welcoming atmosphere. This is one of the projects designed by Mark Ridler, who is one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Schellevis Beton
Being voted runner up in the SGD’s product of the year award at last year’s LANDSCAPE Show was especially pleasing for Schellevis, having launched in the UK only eighteen months earlier. But while September’s event is firmly in sight, much closer on the horizon is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this month, where Schellevis are once again hoping to win awards.
Bespoke Resin Surfaces A brand new luminescent product to be used in resin bound applications is being launched at LANDSCAPE this year. The Daltex Luminescent gives an ambient natural glow to exterior locations and prepare to be amazed as you will see it quite literally glow in the dark. This product has a wide range of potential uses, from a safety perspective, to a purely aesthetic application. The Daltex Luminescent can be used in a mix with other gravels to give an overall glow, or in specific areas to highlight areas where a clear demarcation is needed for safety or guidance purposes , for example in the edge of footpaths, steps, car parking spaces, the list of potential uses goes on and on. This product has also has green appeal from an ecological stand point it is a great alternative for use on footpaths in parks and other dark areas instead of using traditional lighting. Using the latest technology, the Daltex Luminescent, after exposure to UV will glow for 10 hours, which is far greater than other similar products that are available. For more details and information why not visit the Bespoke Resin stand at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.
Schellevis commissioned designer Sarah Naybour to create their stand. The layout is split level featuring two contrasting outdoor spaces where the versatility, style and character of Schellevis paving and landscaping elements fit beautifully. The first is an urban landscape inspired by the plans for Battersea Power Station, the second a private residential garden. The lower level will be a loosely planted contemporary gravel garden with a scattering of Schellevis planks leading to giant 1m x 1m cantilever steps set into the edge of the upper terrace. On one of these sits a life size wire figure with copper wire hair, created by British artist Rachel Ducker. Put to various uses in the two areas, the paving’s extensive natural colour palette, unique broken Basalt finish and wide range of formats enable it to connect and define the tiers with effortless effect and maximum impact. So the atmosphere on the upper level will be very different. Minimal and laid out on a grid, it features the new cube seating from Schellevis, used as a plinth for another sculpture. Smaller Schellevis pavers in a chequer board pattern will clad the back wall, with laser cut rusted steel panels in a twig pattern. See Schellevis at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show or visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Readyhedge Unprecedented demand for Readyhedge instant hedging has meant a busy start to this year. Being a UK grower of portable instant hedging this Worcestershire based company delivers all over the country. The Readyhedge instant hedging is available in clipped units with flat sides and top up to 2 metres tall. All the hedging is container grown allowing it to be available all through the year with none of the problems of field grown production. Each hedging unit is a metre long allowing it to be transported with ease and to be positioned in areas with limited access. It also means that no specialist equipment is needed to deal with these products on site. With the demand for their hedging still growing the nursery has expanded over the winter to increase production by 10 000 metres of hedging. Simon Williamson the owner of Readyhedge says “this expansion allows us to produce more high quality hand crafted hedging and improve on our already high quality finish”. Working alongside Readyhedge is Hedgegrow which supplies screening panels of different plant species and with a range of clear stem heights, as well as a range of individual topiary shapes. Come and see examples of their work on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

PRO Landscape by Drafix Software Drafix Software, Inc., makers of the industry leading PRO Landscape design software for landscape professionals, has announced landscape CAD design for iPad is now available in their PRO Landscape Companion app. PRO Landscape Companion is the iPad and Android tablet design component for the desktop/laptop version of PRO Landscape. The new CAD component allows users to measure and design the site in a scaled drawing right on the tablet. They can then transfer the design right to the computer and do additional work. “One of frustrating parts for landscape designers has always been creating the site plan so they can actually do their landscape design,” said Pete Lord, President of Drafix Software, Inc. “We’ve always allowed users to import an AutoCAD file, survey or plot plan or even Google earth image to help save time. But there are still cases where the site needs to be hand measured. They’ve had to write down the measurements on a piece of paper and then redraw them on the computer. Now they can measure the property line, house or building, pavers and even start designing on the tablet. From there they can then import the plan directly into the desktop software.” Drafix Software, Inc. opened for business in 1994 and continues to be the worldwide leader in providing professional photo imaging and design solutions for landscape contractors, designers, architects and garden centres. Come and see it in action on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bituchem Bituchem’s specialist hard landscaping material, Natratex Cotswold, can play a key role in the design of new housing developments, offering an attractive solution for pathways, driveways and roads. Based on the colour of Cotswold stone, which is growing in popularity for modern-build houses, Natratex is great for creating a matching landscape to the surrounding buildings. The company has seen many applications of the material to new housing development sites, where the product has proved to be a striking alternative to standard black tarmac to add to the aesthetics of the site. The material uses a range of naturally occurring coloured aggregates and is bound using a clear binder to ensure the finish is durable and does not fade in appearance or performance. With minimal maintenance requirements, landscapes using the material will not need to be closed for lengthy periods of time, which would cause unnecessary disruption or inconvenience to residents or local businesses. Natratex’s hard-wearing qualities also make it a particularly safe material for applications in residential areas where is it is regularly used by pedestrians, and in particular, children and elderly residents. The material is resistant to cracks and potholes and therefore ensures a constant, flat and smooth surface that will not create a trip hazard. Bituchem has developed Natratex to create a porous alternative, suitable for domestic areas that are susceptible to regular flooding. In applying Natratex Porous, water build up and large puddles are avoided for a safer and more pleasant environment. Further information is available from the Bituchem stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Alloway Timber Alloway now stock Trex decking, which is an innovative and stylish way to transform a house into a home and make any building project come to life. The high performance composite decking brand is increasingly becoming a popular choice with architects and designers alike who are looking to use WPC (wood plastic composite) in forthcoming projects. Comprised of 95% recycled materials, Trex, unlike other wooden decking’s, will not rot, warp, crack or splinter thanks to its advanced shell design. With a shell on the surface protecting it from moisture, Trex decking can last well over 20 years without degradation, meaning it is even suitable for the rather wet British weather. A strong and durable decking with scratch and stain resistance properties, it is a home owners dream as it never needs sanding, staining or painting, so there won’t be any need for time intensive and costly maintenance work. Compared with woods such as teak or sandalwood, Trex is not only cost-effective due to its long lasting properties but also cheaper to begin with. With a fully conversant technical team with years of experience, Trex is both quickly and efficiently installed at any project. Looking sleek and smart in all photography, Trex’s crisp lines bring out the qualities of the outside space and building design. No longer do builders or designers have to rely on imported tropical wood, with all its flaws, fading and maintenance issues. With natural tropic looks, Trex Transcend comes in a variety of shades including grey finishes (Island Mist), streaked matt finish and tropical light grey. Trex decking is available locally through Alloway Timber Branches, why not come and see the samples for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Association of Professional Landscapers The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) has been formed to help consumers make that informed choice. The APL regularly exhibit at flower shows across the country, such as RHS shows, BBC Gardeners World Live and Harrogate Flower Show with their domestic garden builds, showcasing simple ideas to the consumer and highlighting the importance of using an accredited landscaper. This has resulted in many medals being awarded to the APL and its members, most recently at the Harrogate Flower Show where the APL garden won a prestigious Gold medal. The APL teamed up with Paxman Landscapes at this year’s Harrogate Spring Flower Show to build a garden that has the family unit at its core; an outdoor space to enjoy the company of your nearest and dearest, to dine, to relax and to build beautiful family memories. The APL is the organising partner for the landscape gardening section of the WorldSkills UK competition which encourages young people and adults to be ambitious in their pursuit of skills to the highest level. The APL provides homeowners with an even greater choice when selecting a landscaper and assurance that the contractor has met prescribed professional standards. Tobermore Aura, an award-winning new development from Countryside Properties, features an attractive landscape created with Tobermore’s fabulous Fusion block paving and Hydropave Tegula Duo which has been incorporated as an effective SuDS solution. Situated on the well-known Long Road in Cambridge, Aura is one of the most desirable new addresses in the area. The development was designed by Southwark Council and comprises a variety of properties ranging from spacious one bedroom apartments to executive five bedroom detached homes. BBUK was appointed as landscape architect on the project and was set the task of sourcing suitable hard landscaping materials that would meet the aesthetics of the site and provide long-term sustainability.
