Taylor Made Planters Taylor Made Planters were commissioned by Morgan Sindall on the Hammersmith Palais project early in 2014. They worked close with the team to design and create a unique ultra-modern looking courtyard for the newly developed student accommodation. The 19metre planter with seating to the front was constructed from heavy-duty sleepers then clad with 4x1 planned boards. They also supplied over 50 planters adjacent from the 19metre planter along with benches with internal lighting. All were then finished with 3 coats of Sadolin Superdec Opaque wood protection in battleship grey which finished it off perfectly. Over 250 pressure treated sleepers used and something in the region of 1000m of 95 x 45mm treated cladding was used. A high grade 300micron eco dpm liner was used and all the visible fixings are stainless steel. Over 50 Blok planters were built and painted for this project and all completed within 3weeks. Come and see what Taylor Made can do for you by visiting their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

PorcelPave PorcelPave launched in 2016 with a small range of outdoor porcelain tiles and has been extremely successful so far. Since then they have been on the lookout for exciting new sizes, designs and textures, and in April 2017 are launching five brand new ranges. Their portfolio now includes a selection of wood, stone and cement effect external porcelain tiles, in a selection of sizes including large format, planks and square slabs. At double the thickness of a standard internal porcelain tile, they are perfect for high-traffic and commercial installations as well as patios, balconies, terraces and swimming pool surrounds. All PorcelPave tiles are made from vitrified porcelain, which makes them extremely strong and hard-wearing. It also means that they have very low porosity and are therefore fade and frost proof, as well as being resistant to staining and moss & mould growth. The tiles are engineered for even thickness and size, allowing you to create precise and modern patios. They have become popular with homeowners as well as builders and landscapers, thanks to their range of stylish looks and low maintenance. PorcelPave tiles can be installed using adhesive onto a solid base, or using the new PorcelQuick Adped adhesive pedestal system. PorcelPave are looking forward to exhibiting for the first time at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Kate Gould
An old factory has been transformed into a residential home with a large roof terrace leading off an open plan lounge / diner. The space has views over South London and its industrial landscape. The terrace was designed for eating and lounging with built-in black planters planted for all season interest with Trachelopsermum jasminoides, Buxus and colourful summer blooms. A sculptural piece from Blue canopy and a water feature sit at opposite ends of the terrace and are lit at night. In the evening a bespoke gel fire can be lit and this acts as part coffee table / part fire. Landscaping materials took their lead from the interior of the property which is bright and light and so a pale limestone was used as the main flooring material with a contrasting strip of Ip’e decking under the dining table and chairs. Cedar trellis provides privacy all around the terrace and helps to create the illusion of a private haven in the city. The project is just one of those recently executed by Kate Gould Gardens. Kate is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Register for your free ticket to listen to her talk at www.landscapeshow.co.uk

Woodscape Woodscape has been creating beautiful hardwood street furniture and external structures for some of the UK’s most vibrant public spaces for nearly 40 years, and remains a privately-owned, familybusiness that showcases British craftsmanship at its best. From complex, bespoke designs through to their classic bollard & seating ranges, you can be assured that your furniture is in experienced hands. They are proud to #designthenation alongside the UK’s leading Architects & Landscape Designers, as well as many public and private sector clients, by developing solutions that not only respond to the needs of Britain’s rapidly growing communities, but also contribute to the creation of outstanding public spaces. Harewood House Trust’s aim is to conserve the extensive estate of the Listed Georgian property in a sustainable manner for future generations. The estate, owned by David and Diane Lascelles, Earl and Countess of Harewood, runs a nationally recognised conservation programme which includes the protection and development of wildlife habitats and the maintenance of Listed parkland. At the request of Head Gardener Trevor Nicholson, Woodscape were commissioned to manufacture an exact replica of the original 18th century balustrade parapet in the historic grounds of the Georgian mansion. Using a CNC Router, Woodscape were able to recreate the 13.3m long balustrade parapet as close as possible to the original design, manufactured out of naturally very durable hardwood. The end result showcases a delightful design which was in-keeping with the original Chinese influences and its setting in the beautiful Grade 1 listed landscape. The high quality of the materials and build also met with stringent regulations, in order to ensure a safe environment for the visitors to Harewood House Trust for many years to come. Come and talk to Woodscape about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

CIH Thrive Thrive is the leading charity in the UK that uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people who are living with disabilities or ill health, or are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. This is known as Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) Thrive help people facing a wide range of difficulties including learning and physical disabilities and mental ill-health. Horticultural therapy programmes are run at gardens in Reading, Battersea Park London, Birmingham and Gateshead. Sessions are also delivered to groups within the community. Using knowledge and experience gained from providing training for the past 39 years, Thrive offers horticultural qualifications to their gardeners, and courses and consultancy services to professionals and organisations. Training courses offered range from a one day introductory ‘Step into STH’ course to a Professional Diploma run in conjunction with Coventry University. The ‘Understanding Disability in Garden Design’ course enables garden designers to make provision for people with disabilities. Thrive were delighted when Mark Lane became an ambassador for them earlier this year, joining existing ambassador and TV gardener David Domoney. Mark is the first BBC gardening presenter in a wheelchair and a garden designer. He said: “Garden and landscape designs should be inclusive by default, but it is rare. I had the wonderful opportunity of visiting Thrive’s Reading site this year, and it was so good seeing how productive the walled garden is, how social a space it is, but above all how horticulture and gardening are changing lives.”
The Chartered Institute of Horticulture is open to any professional within the horticultural industry, from those at the beginning of their education or career, to those already well established within the field. We are the professional voice for horticulture, uniting a growing profession. CIH provides the opportunity to associate with colleagues through technical and social gatherings, through its publications and on its website. Membership of the Institute provides a unifying force that draws together horticulturists who may be pursuing very different career paths and ‘uniting a growing profession’. We also support Grow Careers, an initiative set up to help bring young horticulturists into the industry by helping them explore the options available to them. Our mission is to both increase the number of new entrants into the sector, and inform progression and diversification of careers within the industry. We will be returning to the LANDSCAPE Show this year to take advantage of the networking opportunities with other organisations. The various lectures and seminars have proven to be insightful and informative and with such a varied audience of visitors the event is like no other.
Thrive are exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this year, why not visit their stand or come along and listen to Mark Lane, who is one of the featured speakers. Register for your free tickets at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

CED Stone Group
If you’re looking to speak to a stone expert at the LANDSCAPE Show then get yourself over to the CED Stone Group exhibit, where the team will be showcasing a selection of their natural stone and hard landscaping products. Established 40 years ago by stone specialist Michael Heap, today CED is managed by his son Giles and employs over 100 people with six depots across the UK. Hard-wearing, naturally beautiful and diverse, stone is a timeless material that will bring a touch of sophistication to any landscape scheme. CED recently received an enquiry from Aralia’s founder, award-winning designer Patricia Fox, who had been working with the owners of a large country estate in Hertfordshire to re-design their garden. Aralia’s design incorporated a bespoke Oak pergola, a swimming pool and natural planting beds with an arrangement of spectacular dry-stone walls. ‘We literally have hundreds of materials available to choose from’ says Paula Chalmers, CED’s Marketing Manager. ‘We take the time to understand how our clients want their gardens to look, and draw on our knowledge and experience to help them select the best stone products.’ CED worked with Aralia to select Yellow Quartz Paddlestones for the walls, bringing warmth to the colour scheme. The large golden sandy-grey quartzite discs are tumbled to create soft rounded edges, making them a more environmentally friendly alternative to natural river-worn paddlestones. For more information, visit Paula on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Michael Perry Who would have thought the safe and cosy life of the plant world could be so downright rude? However, the slogans of these shiny new t-shirts are actually the real botanical names for plants! Michael Perry, one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show, has a brand new fashionable range of tee’s which display a wide variety of Latin plant names for varieties of flowers, trees and even fungi. The Carry On-esque selection includes eye openers such as ‘Rubus cockburnianus’, ‘Lilium superbum’ and ‘Clitoria ternatea’! All t-shirts come in a choice of 17 bang-on trend colours such as Flame Orange, Sun Yellow and Kelly Green. The hues in the colour range mirror some of the fashionista’s picks for 2017 too. The original purpose was defined as being to improve the status of groundsmen and the standard of groundsmanship. Our vision is to promote quality surfaces and quality services and establish the IOG as ‘the’ leading professional organisation for grounds management, recognised by the National Governing Bodies of Sport and the public, private and voluntary sectors for its industry knowledge and technical expertise. In 2011, the IOG set up the Young Board of Directors (YBD). The YBD are leading the Institute’s ‘Get into Grounds’ strategy encouraging 14-16 year olds, school leavers and young people to consider a career in groundsmanship. Most members of the group entered the industry by volunteering at a local sports club and learnt the skills and gained the experience they needed as they went along. You can follow the YBD on Twitter; @iogyoungboard or on Facebook; ‘The IOG Young Board’. Alternatively you can e-mail us at youngboard@ iog.org and head to www.iog.org for more information on the IOG and the Young Board of Directors. 2016 was the first LANDSCAPE Show that the IOG Young Board of Directors attended. We found the variety of exhibitors along with the quality of attendees invaluable, and therefore made no hesitation in deciding to come back for 2017. Due to the quality of exhibitors and visitors, the IOG Young Board made many useful connections that we have greatly benefitted from since the show last year. The Young Board are present at the LANDSCAPE Show on the 19th and 20th September, so please do come and visit us on our stand.

Perennial
Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough.
Chic Teak Luxury Furniture Chic Teak received a residential tree bench commission to cover a sewage pipe which had been used as huge concrete planter, which housed a large fig tree in the grounds of a beautiful garden overlooking Falmouth estuary. A standard tree bench and their roll topped tree bench were too low to cover the unusual planter. The customer also wanted a rolled top to completely cover the planter edge and compliment the look with thick supporting legs.
Life’s challenges such as illness, injury or loss of income can strike at any time and their effects can be devastating, especially for those working in jobs that rely on physical health and fitness. Perennial helps by offering free and confidential advice as well as practical and emotional support, which also extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Its team of Caseworkers and Debt Advisers across the UK tailor the support they give to the specific needs of each individual. Many of us support charities as a way of giving something back, and what better than choosing a cause close to home that helps the people within our own industry? Perennial relies on income from its supporters to deliver its services to those that need them. There is still a way to go before Perennial and the help it offers is known by everyone in the industry. As the leading landscaping trade event, LANDSCAPE is a very valuable platform for Perennial to raise awareness and increase support.
Chic Teak manufactured a bespoke teak tree bench with a 175cm internal and 290cm external diameter and included a wide smooth top. With limited time to produce the seat before a forthcoming wedding in the garden, they had to draft the requirements, approve the drawings, manufacture and ship all within 3 months. From initial enquiry to installation, they managed to complete the task in less than 11 weeks and within budget. Come and see more examples from the Chic Teak range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Brokopondo Reservoir in Suriname hides a secret treasure under its surface: More than 500,000 truckloads of tropical hardwood. When the Reservoir was created due to the construction of a power plant, the forest in the valley was inundated. Hundreds of thousands trees died but were also naturally impregnated by the fresh water. Now, 60 years later, the trees are felled and serve as the ideal material for European terraces. Harvesting these trees serves the environment enormously, as they would eventually rot and release climate-damaging methane gas. Suriname is also known for its exceptional sustainable forest management. In all of the small country’s forest areas the CELOS system for sustainable management of tropical rainforests is applied – ensuring there is no clear cutting and thus reducing the impact to the sensitive ecosystem. SuriDeck offers three highly resistant wood species for outdoor decking from these two resources: Walaba, Guyana Teak, and Fava. All planks are dried and smooth planed in the Netherlands guaranteeing a high quality standard of the finished goods. So far, hundreds of thousands square meters of SuriDeck terraces have been built in Europe with more yet to come. Come and see samples for yourself on the F.W. Barth stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Lumena Lights Ltd ‘Bright Innovation’ is still the ultimate concept behind Northamptonshire based outdoor and garden lighting specialists Lumena, founded in 2010. They have recently collaborated with fellow LANDSCAPE exhibitors M&M Timber, to present an exciting new range of Solid Timber path lights ready for Spring / Summer 2017. Exclusive to Lumena, this range of impressive wooden path lights are crafted from heavy duty Radiata Pine. This amazing material is sourced from South Africa where the dry weather increases its density resulting in low splitting properties, which means the timber won’t crack or shake more than 5mm. Most domestic softwoods display significant cracks or splitting as the timber seasons. The wood is chemically treated and kiln dried to give it a guaranteed life of up to 15 years. Similar Pine is used in children’s playgrounds and nature reserves.
The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has been championing excellence in garden design for over 35 years. It is the only professional association for garden designers in the UK and counts some of the UK’s leading garden and landscape designers among its growing membership. The SGD will be back at the LANDSCAPE Show for the 4th year, this September. SGD Chair, Philippa O’Brien, explains why: “Last year we were delighted to have had over 70 membership enquiries at LANDSCAPE and were able to welcome some talented new designers to the Society. LANDSCAPE is great place to meet up with members and talk through projects and initiatives such as our conferences, workshops and annual awards scheme. It is also the perfect place to introduce ourselves to the new cohort of students who come to the show in droves to get to grips with the industry. The show offers excellent networking opportunities and is an ideal environment to get together with suppliers and sponsors. We are delighted to be returning.”
To offer something different to their already immense range of illuminated bollards, solid brass lights are incorporated into machined orifices in the pine timber sleepers or posts to create a robust, elegant path light. 12v and 240v options are available and all are LED compatible. These durable lights are in-keeping with the natural surroundings and aesthetics of the garden and are available in two heights, designed for 300mm - 400mm secure in-ground mounting. Please come and visit their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September, where the knowledgeable and friendly team are on hand to help.

Mark Lane
2016 was a very busy year for Mark Lane Designs and 2017 looks to be even busier. He has 10 projects on the go at the moment with 2 very large projects about to come to their practice. Mark is also extremely busy with his BBC TV work for both BBC Gardeners’ World and for the RHS Shows, as well as being the new ‘Health, Wellbeing and Community’ Ambassador for Groundwork, the environmental community charity, and an Ambassador for Thrive, the disability charity that uses gardening to positively change lives. Mark Lane Designs collaborates closely with architects, designers, artists, sculptors and craftsmen on a wide range of projects, to provide an individual, friendly and professional service. They offer high-quality, bespoke garden, planting and landscape designs for small private or large-scale public projects, from an intimate little garden to a landmark outdoor facility. A completely different outdoor space, was the creation of a Malaysian-inspired garden on an acre site with verdant, lush planting and ceramic pots from Malaysia that have been re-purposed as water features. The design is geometric with strong walls clad in Welsh granite stone, a rustic pergola with a mix of materials and a large water feature with resin-bound gravel ‘floating’ stepping stones that lead to a secluded dining area under tropical palms. A Grade II listed thatched barn required a contemporary relaxation and meditation garden with a sunken deck and abundant borders. Keeping in tune with the surrounding countryside, hornbeam hedging, hides this part of the garden from the sweeping driveway under a weeping willow. Mark Lane is one of this year’s featured speakers at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September. Register for your free ticket to come and listen to him at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

Europlanters Europlanters have been privileged to part of an award winning design. The £40m project, designed for LeSoCo College, with a neighbouring 44 home development in Southwark Lewisham, designed to give students the feel of a modern workplace, setting them up for progressing into work, or to university. The scheme consisted of a six-storey education building built, containing flexible teaching space. Within the design is a rooftop terrace which offers stunning views over London including, views of the London Eye and The Shard. The seating area on this terrace is set behind a glass screen providing shelter and an exterior space for socializing. To ensure that there is a green space Europlanters manufactured 24m of planters with floating seats for trees and shrubs, another 11 meters of planters with seating on the top and a bespoke triangle shaped seat, so that people visiting the roof top could sit and enjoy the city skyline. The planters were made in RAL 7021 Matt to compliment the exterior of the building and the timber used for the seating was hardwood Sapele. Europlanters worked closely with Landscapers who planted up small shrubs and trees before adding seating to the planters. On the terrace of level two to ensure safety for people using the area, 60 meters of planters were made with strong metal balustrades powder coated to the same RAL colour as the planters to create a barrier at the edge of the building. ‘Adding balustrades has been a new, exciting challenge for us’ Said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters‘ it is the first time that we have created a guardrail on planters and we have tested it way beyond the necessary limits to ensure that it is fit for purpose’. To add to the green space two large trays were created in GRP which were then bolted together and planted up with sedum to create a green roof. Come and talk to Europlanters on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Gustafson, Porter + Bowman
Despite its proximity to the natural world, Hong Kong has few high-quality green spaces which can temper the frenetic environment of the city. Taikoo Place will create an inclusive open space which includes lush native vegetation and sculptural water features. Its development follows the demolition of two existing towers, signalling the commitment from the developer to create an engaging open space for residents and office workers alike. The 69,000sqft landscape project is comprised of a sequence of areas ranging from small intimate places around water to gather with friends and colleagues, to larger open areas suitable for events such as jazz concerts and outdoor markets. The design for the largest space, Taikoo Square, creates the impression of a series of terraces and is typified by two large longitudinal pools connected by a cascade and a small water table. The carving and sculpting of these water features through 3D modelling allows the water to move in exciting ways, bringing movement and pleasant sounds to the square whilst referencing the former Quays that once existed on the site. The entire design is defined by large bands of brown and white granite which run through the site and extend into the surrounding streetscape and the new building lobby for One Taikoo Place, to the North. This lobby space will also be designed by Gustafson Porter + Bowman. This unification of landscape and interior space embodies a genuinely whole solution which greatly enhances the public realm experience for all users. “Taikoo Place is a cohesion of work, enjoyment, culture, and nature. As landscape architects it is a privilege to be able to transform such a large space between existing and new buildings.” Sibylla Hartel, Partner Neil Porter from Gustafson, Porter + Bowman will be speaking at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Trans-European Stone
If you thought Belgian Blue limestone was only suitable for flooring, the luxury new homes in Roehampton Gate will certainly get you to think again! Roehampton Gate is a magnificent detached residence with seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, adjacent to Richmond Park, in south West London. It was built by award-winning developer Richstone Properties Ltd and completed late, 2016. From the beginning, Trans-European Stone worked closely with Richstone and Brooks architects providing technical advice to ensure the stonework was not only aesthetically pleasing, but also practical and buildable. Trans-European Stone also supplied working drawings and factory cutting sheets for every element of the stonework, from the plinths to the copings and including the all-important portico. Matthew Arnold, an Associate at Brookes Architects said “Trans-European Stone were really helpful on this project. Their stonework knowledge and technical advice saved us a lot of time”. Richstone Developments innovative use of Belgian Blue limestone with a natural light finish enhances the development and contributes to the classic exterior of this sumptuous new home. If you’re designing a new project, whether you need paving, flooring or cladding, then don’t forget that “Blue is the New Black!”. Loknan Architectural Wow, time flies! It only seems like yesterday that Loknan were filling you in on work they’ve been doing with Kate Gould Gardens at RHS Chelsea 2017. Well, that was a whole month ago, and this month they have another exciting update to share with you! As well as Kate Gould, Loknan are also privileged to be working with Sarah Eberle on Hillier Garden Centre’s RHS Chelsea Show Garden, ‘Hillier’s Spring’. As Chelsea’s most highly decorated garden designer, Sarah’s design this year will hopefully see her secure her 14th Chelsea Gold Medal as well as help Hillier win their 72nd consecutive gold medal, furthering their record as the most successful exhibitor in the shows history! From the wide range of decking and cladding timber species Loknan offer, the bamboo does have a wide appeal for many projects. As a highly sustainable product with a striking appearance, this quickly became the species of choice for the ‘Hillier’s Spring’ garden. The decking has been supplied with the FastClick install system (particularly necessary given limited time on site) and the cladding has been milled to a bespoke thickness of just 5mm to allow it to be curved inside the pavilion area. Whilst Loknan has an extensive product range, they love to get involved with specialist projects requiring a bespoke solution, bringing all kinds of visions to reality for their clients! Their stand at LANDSCAPE this year (A31) certainly showcases this well, so be sure to pop by and have a chat with them! Meanwhile, be sure to watch out for next month’s update!

Ebben Tree Nursery With their organic forms, multi-stem trees offer a beautiful contrast in urban environments and are used more and more often for green projects in public spaces. They create a unique atmosphere and natural experience through their characteristic appearance and wide variety of forms. Thanks to their naturally rich variety of forms and colours, multi-stem trees offer infinite possibilities for international green projects, in public, semi-public and private spaces. They are beautiful park trees that create surprising depth and provide a much greater natural experience than high-stem trees. Much more of the tree can be seen at eye level, thanks to the beautiful structure of the multiple stems. Around buildings, multi-stems form a wonderful contrast to the sharp, urban lines, and cast a pleasant shadow on façades. And at natural playgrounds, solitary multi-stems are perfect climbing trees. At Ebben Tree Nursery, they aim to cultivate trees and plants with a unique character in terms of form, colour and application. This is why they started to cultivate multi-stem trees many years ago. Elite Bespoke Planters Four years ago in rural Monmouthshire, experienced stonemason Mick Avery decided to develop a range of high end natural stone planters to showcase his new business venture Elite Bespoke Planters LLP. He spent a long time perfecting his designs, hand crafting exterior and interior planters made out of marble, granite, travertine, limestone, slate, onyx, and local stone. Mick now trades as EBPlanters and the business has been picking up momentum ever since. His initial idea of creating bespoke products is coming to fruition with keen interest from designers and landscapers all over the UK. The next step is creating more awareness of his planters. There are exciting events in the pipeline, but you will be able to visit his stand at The Landscape Show in September. Micks planters are perfect for all design projects because of the diversity in stone: patio’s, terraces at hotels & restaurants, spa areas, pool decks, luxury villas, residential balconies, roof top gardens, country houses, show gardens, and so on. Being totally unique, large or small, the planters offer the ‘wow factor’ to any outdoor design; singularly, as a pair, or multiples of. Their Black Horse Granite Planter is an exhibition piece. It is one of three they are manufacturing out of the same slab that was purchased from Brazil. It has an outstanding pattern and they have captured the continuous movement in its pattern all the way around it. Quality like this doesn’t come along very often. It is 75x61x61cms. They will be for sale. Come and visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September. They will have some amazing products and welcome any questions you may have.

Proludic Play is essential to a child’s physical and mental well-being; it supports development, crucial for children as they transition through key stages. Our local parks provide the ideal environment to facilitate this. Having open spaces is essential for children to run, explore, climb trees, ride bikes and let off steam, however not all children are afforded the independence to play in this environment. ‘Helicopter parenting’ is an emerging phenomenon, the outcome being that children are not given the independence and freedom of play that previous generations of children enjoyed. This means that there is even greater pressure for play spaces to deliver a valuable and high quality experience for all children. How? Through clearly identifiable play spaces within parks. Traditional fixed play equipment within these spaces provides a haven for children to experience moving sensations, such as rocking, spinning, sliding and will be able to assess risk and challenge whilst experiencing pure exhilaration. Open natural landscape alongside quality play provision is crucial and highlights the importance of play to children in a society where inactivity and obesity levels are rising and threatening children’s health. The API (Association of Play Industries) has undertaken research which has uncovered during 2014-15 that 112 playgrounds have been closed and in 2015-16 a further 102 were shut down. The reason cited for this was budget reductions. Therefore, Proludic are fully supporting the API #Nowhere2play campaign which is lobbying for Government funding to arrest future closures and protect the accessible places to play. Come and talk to Proludic on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

M&M Timber Product innovation is at the core of the M&M Timber business; the Worcestershire-based manufacturer of quality long-life timber products for agricultural, equestrian and landscaping sectors. Exploring new products to meet growing customer demand the business is delighted to announce two new additions - DuraSleeper and DuraEdge. Manufactured using Radiata Pine, which is kiln dried then pressure treated with Tanalith E wood preservative, the DuraSleeper range can be used in a variety of configurations to create edging and wall features. The sleepers are available in two finishes, rough sawn and planed, and can come in a selection of lengths. For landscaping projects that include corners in the design, the new DuraEdge presents the ideal solution. It comes with the same specification as the sleeper range and can work in partnership with M&M Timber’s Unilog Pro landscaping timbers. Tanalith E is a tried and tested copper-based wood preservative from Lonza Wood Protection. Treatment of this kind delivers durability and long service life for sleepers. With its high-performance credentials, particularly for ground contact timbers, it helps to protect timber against certain copper tolerant brown rots which can attack and decay the wood. At the start of the year, M&M Timber gained the Wood Protection Association (WPA) accreditation for the quality of its treated wood for the 5th consecutive year. To further endorse M&M Timber as a leading supplier of treated timber the business was awarded the Wood Protection Association ‘Treated Wood Trader of the Year’ for 2017. For further information please visit their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.
Step Change Design
Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell from Step Change Design help garden designers, landscape architects and other outside specialists to work cost effectively and successfully with care sector clients and their residents. A key message they want to share with garden designers and landscape architects is to understand the care culture in operation before you design a new garden for the care setting. This is to avoid the danger of ‘overdesigning’ the space (i.e. providing an outdoor resource that is beyond the current capacity of the home to use it effectively). They widened their research to include observations of what took place inside, as much as what took place outside the care settings they visited. This is because the ingrained and subconscious habits, attitudes, beliefs and norms that are in operation at the care setting have not been addressed to ensure that the new outdoor space will be easily incorporated into the overall care culture in operation. Debbie and Mark are two of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along to their presentation to learn more about their new approach to working with care settings that they call ‘Relationship-Centred Design’ and the ‘Hidden Dangers’ that designers can inadvertently create for care setting clients. Harrowden Turf A large landscaping project on the Norfolk coast has been completed on time and on budget using 17,000 m2 of hardwearing turf from Harrowden Turf Ltd. Pinewoods Holiday Park in Wells-Next-Sea are proud holders of the David Bellamy Conservation Gold Award. They were insistent that the new 116 pitch extension to their park was finished to the highest standards of excellence in time for the start of the holiday season in Easter 2017. Specialist Contractor Warwick Taylor Landscapes was commissioned by Walker Construction Services Ltd on behalf of the Holkham Estate. Chris Taylor of Warwick Taylor Landscapes explained why Harrowden Turf Ltd were selected to supply the turf. “RTF turf was originally specified for this project, however, we were unable to find a supplier with sufficient stock. Having worked with Harrowden Turf in the past, I approached them for advice. After discussions with Harrowden’s technical team and the landscape architect it was agreed to use their premium grade turf. Harrowden have plenty of experience of supplying turf for large projects. The consistency of their product quality and their expertise with logistics made them the logical choice.” Warwick Taylor did encounter with problems due to winter weather and the proximity to the sea. At times, excavations were affected by tidal ingress of water. A well-trained and experienced team with plenty of common sense prevailed. The site was completed on time and achieved zero snagging issues at handover. Come and talk to Harrowden about your next turfing project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Carolyn Willitts
Carolyn Willitts, founder of CW Studio, is a landscape architect and garden designer who takes joy in creative collaboration and has a passion for designing bespoke spaces that connect people to places. CW Studio have recently designed the public realm and private courtyard associated with Ellesmere Street in Manchester. Construction has commenced on this 1.25 acre residential development. A stepped granite terrace with bespoke metallic planters and stone seating steps provides an attractive new public open space and a welcoming entrance to the development, while attractive planting will provide year round interest. The private contemporary courtyard garden will provide a relaxing space for residents. Raised planters allow a variety of plants and multiGstem trees to be grown on the roof, while oversized pebbles create sculptural seating on the lawn. Planting includes clipped yew hedging, ornamental grasses, perennials, ferns and spring bulbs. Carolyn says of the scheme “This is such a wonderful project to work on. We are excited about creating bold public realm and a special outdoor space for residents to enjoy.” Carolyn writes for various journals and is a visiting tutor for the London College of Garden Design diploma course and for Manchester Metropolitan University’s landscape architecture course. Dalefoot Composts An enterprising Cumbrian family firm, that makes peat free compost from sheep’s wool and bracken, has featured in a new BBC TV series championing rural entrepreneurs. Dalefoot Composts, based on a 120-acre family farm in the hills of the Lake District, was highlighted on ‘Back to the Land’ presented by Kate Humble on BBC 2. The documentary series travelled the UK meeting the growing band of rural entrepreneurs who have forged their own innovative products and businesses from the land. The programme took a behind-the-scenes look at Dalefoot’s eco compost-making using wool and bracken from the Cumbrian fells. The family who run Dalefoot Composts, Jane Barker and husband Simon Bland, were filmed throughout the year for the episode and their 11-year-old daughter Arabella also made an appearance, helping Kate and her parents with lambing. The enterprising couple began manufacturing compost and selling mail order 20 years ago, prompted by diminishing returns from their sheep farming business. Using Simon’s practical farming knowledge and the scientific input of Jane, who holds a PhD in Environmental Science, they began their composting using bracken – a by-product of their environmental and habitat restoration work - before adding wool to the mixture. Their sustainable Wool Compost range, which is now widely used by gardeners across the UK, boasts wool from their own flock. Benefits include natural water retention of wool fibres means up to 50% less watering. Wool provides a steady, slow sustained supply of nitrogen and high levels of natural potash from the bracken promotes flowering and fruiting, healthy growth and hearty crops - no need for any additional plant food.
SGD Five garden design companies have signed up to become one of the first Registered Practices of the Society of Garden Designer (SGD) following the launch last month. Acres Wild, The Garden Company, Ann-Marie Powell Gardens, Wilson McWilliam and Mazullo Russell have all listed their companies as having Practice status of the Society rather than their membership being associated solely with an individual designer in their company. The new membership, which came into force in March 2017 allows Fellows and Registered Members to list their business as a Registered Practice. It brings the SGD in-line with other professional bodies such as RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and the LI (Landscape Institute) and enables Society members to demonstrate that their whole practice is committed to design excellence and the highest quality standards. SGD Chair Philippa O’Brien said: “We are delighted to be able to offer our Members a new status of membership which we believe reflects the way in which many of our Members operate as garden design companies today. We believe the Registered Practice status will be of great benefit to our Members, allowing them to stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace, whilst allowing the Society to continue to improve standards in the industry.” Further information on all membership levels can be found on the SGD stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Garden Trellis Company The Garden Trellis Company’s bespoke service offers you expert project planning and design, specialist joinery craftsmanship and painting facilities, giving you the most desirable custom made joinery. A recent project shows the level of design possible with decorative fencing. The brief was to develop a French style, “beau treillage” (or “beautiful trellis”) with an emphasis on distinctive design. The main challenge to overcome was to create a scheme with symmetry even though the garden space available was an irregular shape. The client had a very distinctive idea and vision for the garden design so, to make sure they had what it takes to make it a reality, they visited their design studio and workshop to discuss the ideas in person. The finished design features highly bespoke sculptured trellis panels in a two-tone finish using the colours Manhattan Grey and Deben Green, each with a framed antique-mirrored centrepiece and arched top capping with circular detail and classic finials. Highly designed product samples and bespoke paint samples will be available to view on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September and the team from The Garden Trellis Company will be happy to discuss design ideas with you at the event.

Moore Concrete Products Moore Concrete has recently forged a manufacturing & distribution partnership with the innovative ECOncrete for the UK & Ireland. ECOncrete’s technology provides sustainable solutions in the construction of ecologically active infrastructure, within urban and coastal landscapes. In urban environments ECOncrete’s Bio-active Wall tiles are specifically designed to induce rapid plant wall coverage on inland buildings. Green plant coverage significantly improves urban landscapes, provides cleaner and healthier air, and reduces the ecological footprint of urban development. The physical and chemical properties of the wall tiles strongly influence their capability to support and enhance plant growth. ECOncrete’s bio active wall induces natural growth of wall clinging plants, endolithic algae, lichens and mosses. Its high complexity and porosity create moist niches that support flora, without the need for complex soil systems. ECOncretes Bio active wall’s are a great solution for areas like sunken gardens and facades and can integrate planting pockets for increasing green coverage. Standard and pocket tiles are 30cm’s square, although dimensions can be adjusted to meet the needs of specific projects. For additional information please contact them directly on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Isabel Coulton Sculpture Isabel Coulton is looking forward to bringing her project Aspects of Woman to the 2017 LANDSCAPE show. Perfect for garden landscapes, patios, public spaces and interiors - private or corporate; these sculptures, standing around 200cm tall, add a frisson of unusual beauty and interest to any space. With these totally unique, one off sculptures, you can be sure no-one in the world has another one like it. Using her chainsaw like a pencil, these works emerge as inspiration from the wood itself. ‘Aspects of Woman’ is an ever-running project, which charters the female nude in all her different moods, a never-ending subject! The warm glow of wood enhances any garden or conservatory, and often Isabel’s quirky humour is an element within each piece. Coulton’s work can be seen in public spaces in South Devon, where Isabel lives and works. She enjoys working to commission, and in partnership with landscape gardeners, architects and private clients, councils and foundations. In next month’s publication of Landscape Preview, Isabel Coulton will be proud to announce the completion of a major stone carving for an important ecclesiastical commission. Although Coulton enjoys creating one off unique sculptures, she has also cast in bronze and ciment fondue, etc and is available to talk over your specific needs. Please visit Isabel’s stand CP13 at the 2017 LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park. Isabel would be delighted to talk over possible projects and show you past and present works in her portfolio.
Annika Zetterman Annika Zetterman is one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show. She will be talking about getting inspired by new gardens up north in Scandinavia, which are also featured in her new book, the first book of contemporary gardens in the Nordics. Organized by themes that encapsulate the special ambience and lifestyle of the Scandinavian countries – Simplicity, Silence, Fragility, Nakedness, Attunement, Boldness, Openness and Care – each garden is presented through images and texts explaining its unique aspects, providing maximum inspiration, not just for northern climes but for temperate environments around the world. This book is the first overview of contemporary gardens in Scandinavia, presenting gardens and ideas with aesthetic integrity. The author, Annika Zetterman says “Gardens are long lasting imprints, and should be created with the very best intentions, with respect for our past and for a sustainable future. They should help us, our wildlife and our wider environment to thrive. They should be designed with dignity and worked on with modesty and maintained with persistence.” The timelessness of Nordic design has proven itself around the world for many decades. Now it is time for the quality of its gardens and landscapes to come into the light. Jane Finlay
Jane Finlay is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show. She was recently contact by an architect who prescribed finishes for a renovated Victorian house, the client lifestyle plus brief of an ‘English country cottage garden planting’. ultimately dictated the design interpretation of mystery and enchantment for a small London garden, now in build. New interior finishes include polished concrete floors studded with ochre and charcoal toned aggregate mix; this floor finish is echoed in the water-feature bench combo that demarcates the kitchen/dining overflow area. The same finish is used on the pre-formed concrete bog planter with integral Ipe slatted end-bench. A step-up leads through a walkway to an intimate alfresco dining area of dappled shade, framed by planting. The design aspect visually widens a narrow garden and its optimal positioning gives sunshine to its adjacent planting. British self-binding aggregate underfoot feels organic and replicates the interior colour. Continuing through the loggia the explorer finds the self-framed Ipe decking floor of the pergola lounging area, its integral storageseating within and log store outside. Vertical suspended planting boxes of evergreen ferns add to a lush coziness to give a feeling of being at the epi-centre of nature. Tools hidden from view are hung on the pergola framework. Espalier fruit trees for screening take little room. The garden views are secluded and intriguing; its design is held together with perennial meadow style planting and old-fashioned vertical climbers. Jane Finlay will be speaking about her projects during LANDSCAPE at Battersea Park this September. Register for free tickets to listen to her by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk

Decori Decori deliver innovative design, high quality, British manufactured laser cut metal artwork for outdoor and indoor use. They have many applications for their products, including architectural fence panels, balcony screens, gates and even tables, seats and planters. They have a very experienced design team who will work with you to create your bespoke requirements. Their panels are designed using a combination of the most up to date computer graphic and advanced Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, using this process they can offer a finite number of designs. Decori use only the highest quality steel to craft these beautiful decorative metal panels. The steel used for their outdoor range of decorative panels can be Corten (weathering steel), which is proving to be very popular at present. They can also use Zinc coated steel which is then powder coated in a variety of colours. After Decori were featured on the ITV programme ‘Love your Garden’ it resulted in a client from Switzerland browsing their website to find a pattern she wanted for garden screens to hide the solar panels in her garden. The design she preferred was Autumn Winds, which consists of three panels. From receiving this information they customised this pattern on 9 panels to cover a 12 metre long area. Decori offer a design service which offers customers the opportunity to send a photograph which can be rendered to their specific requirements into the photograph so they can see how the final design will look. For further information please visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
Hunter Industries For young plants and trees to thrive, they must receive adequate irrigation and a steady exchange of oxygen across all levels of the root zone. This encourages roots to grow deep and remain safely below ground, allowing plants to become strong and fully established. At the same time, water savings remain a top concern for landscape management projects, especially in areas that are difficult to water. The revolutionary MP Rotator from Hunter Industries offers flexibility of design and features a unique, multi-trajectory rotating stream delivery system that achieves water-conserving results in any landscape. Rather than simply “spraying” water onto landscapes, the MP Rotator delivers multiple streams of water at a slower rate that soils can absorb, significantly reducing runoff. This application rate allows even distribution and up to 30% less water use when compared to traditional sprays. Complementing the water-saving features of the MP Rotator is Hunter’s new Root Zone Watering System (RZWS). The RZWS features Hunter’s patented StrataRoot™ design, a series of internal baffles that direct water, oxygen, and nutrients directly to the root zone while providing rigidity to the irrigation cylinder for added durability. The RZWS comes pre-assembled for easy installation, and the enclosed design and grate protect irrigation hardware from vandalism. For efficient, water-saving landscape irrigation and healthy trees and shrubs in any environment, choose the Hunter RZWS and the MP Rotator as the optimal solution. Urban Street Designs Designer and Manufacturer of Street Furniture, Urban Street Designs worked with HB Reavis and Kings Landscapes to create a quarter acre stunning roof garden on the corner of London Bridge, project reference 33 Central London. Urban Street Designs developed a retaining housing to cover a building maintenance track 150 metres long. The objective was to enclose the track and allow the landscape levels to be raised. The main design criteria was for the building maintenance unit housing to act as a retaining edge, and also create a return inner edge, for grating panels to sit on. Making it pedestrian safe and allowing the entire roof to be used as a garden. They also produced within the project 250 metres of stainless steel flexible edging drainage system. This allowed the landscape team to set out the sweeping curves and act as a divider between paved, lawned and decking areas. The project which is due to be completed by summer will offer one of the finest office spaces in London to work in. Urban Street Designs have been working with steel for over 35 years and are experts when it comes forming steel. They have made everything from large scale modular projects with complex sweeping curves, to small scale, perfectly formed and seamless shapes. Working with stainless steel, galvanised steel, powder-coated or Corten for a full range of finishes. Come and see samples from their ranges on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
