Kate Gould Gardens

Kate Gould has given lots of advice over the years on how to design a small garden and she shows us how to do exactly that, in this gorgeous example of a courtyard garden. This city courtyard is a small garden at the rear of a terraced house; it leads off the kitchen/diner and is required for full time family use year round. The clients needed space for their two young boys to play, so artificial grass will be used yearly. This also removed the need for a lawn mower which would have had to be stored, saving them space. The scheme included a full sized barbecue and space for relaxed adult entertainment in the evenings. The planting was light and pretty with a percentage of evergreen planting, as well as a green wall and lots of exterior lighting to make the garden useful and attractive all year. Powder coated planters were used to create raised beds around the artificial lawn, antiqued mirrors reflect the planting and bounce the light around making the garden feel much larger than its actual size, while overhead festoon lighting creates drama at night. Come listen to Kate’s seminar session at the LANDSCAPE show this September at Battersea Park, by registering for your free ticket at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

AIPH

Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our world for the future. Architectural Plants Ltd

Architectural Plants specialise in plants that are shapely and exotic, a mixture of Japanese and European topiary, hardy palms, bananas, bamboos, plants for screening and a range of rare evergreen trees. The Architectural Plants nursery showcases their extensive range of plants across 8 polytunnels and 8 acres of outdoor displays. Everything is clearly visible and labeled by using their famed ‘traffic light hardiness system’. They do not like waste at Architectural Plants so they have put in place a ‘Pot Recycling Scheme’. Not only is this beneficial for the environment but it will also benefit you as you can earn money back for each pot returned to them. They can pick up your old undamaged Architectural Plants pots or you can bring them into the nursery on your next visit and they will give you a voucher. The more pots you return, the more vouchers you’ll get to spend with them. They have also increased their trade discount to 30% to support their growing trade customers and their specialist home grown stock remains at 20%. They offer free educational tours of the nursery to trade customers and their clients. To speak to them about their range visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

APL

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. The rigorous inspection process to join is the toughest within the industry. Along with the initial inspection, each member is inspected annually to ensure each member has up to date insurances, complies with health and safety law and their quality of work is to the highest possible. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. Over 330 APL members and representatives from across the landscaping industry came together for the APL Awards held at The Brewery in London in March where the work of members was celebrated in style. Many congratulations to all those award winners. It is not too late to enter this the 2018 Awards as the deadline has been extended to the end of May 2017. Don’t miss out on this opportunity and find out more at www.aplawards.co.uk APL are once again looking forward to being part of the LANDSCAPE Show in September and seeing you there to discuss how you can become part of the APL Community. Europlanters LTD If you love the shabby chic look then you’ll love Europlanters new fusion of stainless steel frames with distressed timber. These new planters give an eclectic feel with vintage and contemporary styles. The rustic beach hut style planter was inspired by the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay in South Africa and is also available in a variety of other colours. ‘There is something special about these wooden planters’, said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters. They are lined with GRP to ensure that soil and compost do not rot the timber from the inside and the timber is treated on the outside making it suitable for both interior and exterior use. Europlanters are British manufacturers of quality planters and street furniture used in many prestigious projects all over the UK and beyond. The marketing department is very busy at the moment preparing a new brochure and portfolio which will be out just in time for the LANDSCAPE show. The shabby chic planter is just one of the many planters in their exciting new range, along with various new GRP planters and street furniture styles. Make sure you come along to see them to find out more at LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Arboricultural Association

Haecksler Trees have been a vital part of our culture since the dawn of time, providing warmth and shelter, it’s no wonder we have a deep connection with them, even the presence of a few trees in an urban environment can have a soothing effect on the soul. Haecksler truly love their trees but when they get too big they need to be controlled, in environments with limited access they can pose a real problem. Haecksler and Skarper both have effective professional compact wood chippers which can get pretty much anywhere. Imagine for example, a huge pile of felled branches in a back garden 100 metres down a narrow access way with a 90 degree turn into a garden gate.

As the leading voice on all matters arboricultural in the UK, the AA provides a home and membership for all those employed within the sector; championing the sustainable management of trees in places where people live work and play – for the benefit of society. We provide the standards, training, support and recognition that put our members - in the UK and overseas - at the peak of their profession. We support the LANDSCAPE Show as we strongly believe in collaborating with our partner organisations as part of our vision. The LANDSCAPE Show are also an important member of the All Party Parliamentary Group, helping us to lobby MPs to recognise the importance of our industries. We look forward to meeting members and possible new members at this years event.

The smart way is to take your Haecksler or Skarper chipper down the alleyway through the gate and right to the job. Turn that big pile of branches into a small pile of chips and spray them directly into wheelie bins then take them away (except of course if the customer wants them for their borders, saving you another job!) These amazing chippers will chip branches up to 90mm or 3 ½ inches diameter and process wood so quickly you have to see it to believe it. Anything that’s too big to go through a Haecksler is basically firewood. No more trips to the dump, no more trailer loads of branches to sort out, these machines can seriously change your life at work. Come see their range of wood chippers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The importance of

Pineapples Discovered by Christopher Columbus on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe in 1493, pineapples became a rare delicacy in Europe, with associations of power, wealth, and hospitality. Architects, artisans and craftsmen adopted the pineapple as a motif, sculpting it into gateposts, railings, weather vanes and door lintels. The ability of a hostess to have a pineapple adorn her dining table for an important event said as much about her rank in society as it did about her ingenuity. These beautiful fruits were in such high demand, but so hard to get, that colonial confectioners would often rent them to households by the day. Later, the same fruit was sold to other, more affluent clients who actually ate it. While fruits in general - fresh, dried, candied and jellied, were in great demand, the pineapple was the true celebrity. Its rarity, expense, and striking beauty made it the ultimate exotic fruit. Visitors confronted with pineapple-topped food displays felt particularly honoured by a hostess who obviously spared no expense to ensure her guests’ dining pleasure. In this manner, the image of the pineapple came to express the sense of hospitality characteristic of gracious home gatherings. The most famous example of the pineapple craze would be the Dunmore Pineapple in Scotland. The 14m high folly is said to be one of the most bizarre buildings in Scotland. The elaborate garden retreat was used, among other things, to grow pineapples. The plant was more commonly referenced on a smaller scale, such as through finials on staircases and gate posts, to welcome guests as an expression of hospitality and to give them an indication of the luxury that they could expect to encounter.

Gordon Low Products Ltd These lovely curved structures are lily ponds built into a terrace in a garden. Firestone EPDM which was to be fully adhered using Firestone Bonding Adhesive was chosen, and then Splice Tape and Quick Prime Plus joined the liners together. The Form Flash was applied to the detailed work and provided a fully water tight seal throughout. The pools had to be connected so that their water quality was consistent thereby making sure they didn’t turn into different colours or behave differently. The flexibility of the EPDM liner and accessories made this intricate job easy with a clean and unobtrusive finish. This is just one example of some of the beautiful ponds that Gordon Low have been involved with; they’ve been supplying pond, lake and reservoir liners to the trade for more than forty years. They are one of the UK’s leading distributors of SealEco EPDM and Firestone PondGard, they can supply sheets in one section up to 1800m2 and can also create the most intricate of tailor made liners. To see more of their designs and products come see their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Wonderwall

Make your garden or living space the best room in your home with Wonderwall vertical wall planters. This summer has seen some great displays from the two owners Richard Mckeever and Simon Fitton, with being part of the award winning HTA show Garden at the Royal Chelsea Flower show 2017. The displays were to show people that you don’t only need to build a full vertical wall on a side of a house, you can also grow your own fruits and herbs, even on the side of a garden shed. Strawberry plants cascaded down one side of the shed, whilst the other was filled with a variety of herbs, showing that you can create a wall for growing all your favourite edibles. Vertical gardening has never been so easy and is a great way of creating some amazing environments from balcony displays, full walls and fences in your garden to an internal display, the uses are endless. Landscapers and designers have found the planters the simplest to build and most reliable to use. Traditionally vertical planters have been designed to be a complete modular install with plants already planted however, Wonderwall planters are completely different. With Wonderwall planters you can either bed in soil and grow within the planter or simply place up to 13cm pots directly into one of the three inserts. The system has been designed so that should a summer display be planted and then perish at the end of a season, the pots can be simply removed with little effort and another season of plants can replace them. Come visit their stand and find out more about vertical planters at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

LATIN SQUARES Light is magical, it sets the scene and creates the mood. It also draws attention to detail and diffuses a landscape. For one man, it is his life. In 1985 Davide Groppi was working as a mechanical designer, based in Italy, he can’t explain why he made the decision to start making lamps. “I don’t know why… but certainly the lamps gave me the opportunity to express my personality and to do something real.” His first workshop was very small, in the centre of Piacenza, a town of about 100,000, with many historical palaces situated in splendid gardens. Like many artists who make things because they are inexplicably compelled to do so, he persevered. In 1994, his work was recognised by Maddalena de Padova, an Italian entrepreneur and founder of the furniture company De Padova. She is noted for her ability to spot brilliant designs. Some of the world’s most prestigious chefs have chosen Davide Groppi’s lights for their restaurants: Massimo Bottura, Massimiliano Alajmo, Moreno Cedroni and Giancarlo Perbellini. His table lighting is particularly adept at highlighting the detail of carefully prepared and presented food. Visit Latin Squares at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and experience some of Davide Groppi’s work.

CIH

The Chartered Institute of Horticulture is open to any professional within the horticultural industry, from those at the beginning of their education or career, to those already well established within the field. We are the professional voice for horticulture, uniting a growing profession.

GRAHAM HEELEY STUDIOS LTD Graham Heeley created a pig to create a charming quirky presence in the grounds of a beautifully designed and maintained garden in Surrey. He sits on a patio looking towards the main house, he is life size and commands a demanding presence in the locality to any passer-by, but also shares the area with a number of other sculpted animals. The inspiration at the beginning was to produce a large beast with a slightly clumsy and lazy nature. ‘Winston’ was the first of an on-going series of animals, which make up a set of familiar creatures that occupy our psyche to a certain extent. They have achieved an amount of admiration and also gentle loathing for their habits, to which we sometimes subconsciously confer human attributes.

CIH provides the opportunity to associate with colleagues through technical and social gatherings, through its publications and on its website. Membership of the Institute provides a unifying force that draws together horticulturists who may be pursuing very different career paths and ‘uniting a growing profession’. We also support Grow Careers, an initiative set up to help bring young horticulturists into the industry by helping them explore the options available to them. Our mission is to both increase the number of new entrants into the sector, and inform progression and diversification of careers within the industry. We will be returning to the LANDSCAPE Show this year to take advantage of the networking opportunities with other organisations. The various lectures and seminars have proven to be insightful and informative and with such a varied audience of visitors the event is like no other.

To see more of Graham’s sculpture range he will showcasing at the LANDSCAPE show, make sure you come to see him this September in Battersea Park.

LEWIS QUARRIES LEWIS QUARRIES, suppliers of the finest Purbeck limestone, has introduced Purbeck Bank Retention Blocks to their extensive range of products for building and landscaping. The unique parallel bedding planes of Purbeck make it an ideal stone for creating retaining walls as it is easier to lay and create vertical faces than some other stones. These bank retention blocks come into their own particularly when creating a scheme, which incorporate different levels in order to maximise available space. When increased load bearing capacity is required, reinforced rods set in resin should be used to link blocks and concrete foundations, forming a secure and robust barrier. An alternative is dry laying the retaining blocks by virtue of their even planes, which naturally provides not just a level surface but also a ‘plantable wall’ making use of the gaps between the blocks for additional planting space. Where required, Bank Retention Blocks can be supplied predrilled with holes for easy installation using traditional Lewis Pin lifting. To complement Purbeck bank retention blocks LEWIS QUARRIES also has a range of structural landscape products including rockery stone and landscape boulders. For more details come and meet the team on their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Isabel Coulton Sculpture

Isabel Coulton Sculpture will be exhibiting in a month’s time at the 2017 LANDSCAPE show. Isabel has highly individual sculptures, perfect for both indoor and outdoor environments. She is comfortable working finely with a chisel or boldly with a chainsaw. “On my stand I will have a portfolio of previous works for you to sift through, as well as a selection of new works. I am happy to work to commission and have many pieces of mine sitting happily in public spaces.” Living in Devon, Isabel comes across many interesting natural objects, which become beautiful features in town and country homes, whether indoors or in the garden. The piece, ‘Driftwood Form’ was found on the tide line at Bigbury bay, and its unique character and form is brought out by Isabel. Working with the freedom of a chainsaw, she is able to give a certain movement and grace to an otherwise static piece. She then waxes and polishes parts of the wood grain so it is shown to its best advantage. Left raw in the centre, the juxtaposition of worked and unworked wood is pleasing. It has a knot from a large tree and the bark still being a part of it, this piece endlessly draws the eye around it, giving great pleasure to the onlooker. Visit Isabel on her stand and have a chat about what might be possible for you at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

ASTRO BOYZ TAYLOR FORD DESIGNS ASTRO BOYZ were established during the spring of 2015, designing and creating beautiful, functional gardens and patios providing venues and events with stunning astro artificial grass landscapes and features. During September 2016, they were asked if they could design and supply an astro artificial grass deckchair for a corporate customer, as a gift, without hesitation, they said yes of course (even though they had little idea how this would work best, or even look) After 2 weeks, they contacted the customer to say your deckchair was ready and she was delighted, as were ASTRO BOYZ. In fact, she was so delighted; she placed an additional order for 4 more deckchairs. They have since that time, gone on to create and design a variety of bespoke astro grass furniture designs. This includes sofas, tables, chairs, stools, podiums, deckchairs and various unique designs. Their most recent project for the University of Reading where there brief was to design and supply various pieces of astro grass furniture for their “Sustainability Showcase Event”. IFLA

Europa Lifestyle Ltd Europa Lifestyle is one product with multiple identities. The main configuration of Maestro is a self-supporting, aluminium structure where the roof can be with a sliding foldable canvas or adjustable blades. The canvas can be equipped with curved tubes for a very dynamic appearance, particularly efficient in the management of rain water; taught with spacers or alternating trapezoidal. There is the option to reach up to 700 x 700 cm in the 3-runner-model with spacers or trapezoidal canvas, without needing a central pillar and with a single canvas it makes Maestro particularly competitive and certainly original. The 25cm front beam, the 12 cm height retreated gutter, the integrated screens and the column-beam connection, without any visible connections, complete the unique characteristics of the product. This provides clean lines to the design, typical of the Corradi way of outdoor thinking, both of the configurations, canvas or blades, allows coupling of structures without doubling the pillar and are then able to efficiently and elegantly cover large surfaces as well. To inquire about their products and to meet the team come see their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

ILP

The Institution of Lighting Professionals is an open and collaborative organisation that works proactively with architects, interior designers and specifiers to integrate quality lighting into the built environment. We promote best practice by uniting the skills of engineering, design and technology to deliver great spaces for people. Visit www.theilp.org.uk for more information. We are supporting the LANDSCAPE show because we promote excellence in all forms of lighting one area including lighting landscapes. Our publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ gives guidance on implementing successful lighting within the public realm. It starts from one basic premise – that public space, is a crucial component of successful, well functioning towns and cities in which people can work, relax and socialise in a harmonious manner. But at the same time, even the best-designed public squares, parks, pedestrian areas and gardens, which may be havens of sociability or serenity by day, can become unprepossessing, and even threatening, places after dark. One major aim of our guide is to inspire those responsible for commissioning and funding to recognise the numerous benefits of good landscape lighting and put such lighting at the centre of the design of new or refurbished urban spaces, parks and gardens. Visit www.theilp.org.uk/resources/ ilp-general-reports/lighting-landscapes/ for more details.

Decori

Decori deliver high quality, British manufactured metal artwork for outdoor and indoor use. Their metal screens are becoming increasingly popular due to the versatility they offer. The screens can be free standing which allows them to be used as partitions to create flexible spaces, or fixed with spiked feet to permanently fix. The panels can be used to create a variety of themes within gardens, such as Moroccan, modern minimalist, traditional or oriental. An example of this is their standard bamboo pattern with an oriental garden. Decori are able to produce screens in Corten (weathering steel), stainless steel and aluminium and can be painted to any RAL colour. One of Decori’s latest commissions was to create a bespoke fence and gate to the rear of one of their very important Client’s garden. This beautiful ‘Dahlia’ design has been laser cut out of Corten material. These panels and gates have created a fantastic transformation in the garden, giving complete privacy whilst allowing plenty of light into the garden. You can see from the photographs how the light changes the appearance of the panels as they reflect through the garden. To see more of their products and chat to them come see their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) is the leading organisation that represents professional and volunteer groundsmen and women. Founded in 1934 by W H Bowles BEM, Head Groundsman at Eton College, the first 11 founder members formed the National Association of Groundsmen which became the Institute of Groundsmanship in 1969. The original purpose was defined as being to improve the status of groundsmen and the standard of groundsmanship. Our vision is to promote quality surfaces and quality services and establish the IOG as ‘the’ leading professional organisation for grounds management, recognised by the National Governing Bodies of Sport and the public, private and voluntary sectors for its industry knowledge and technical expertise. In 2011, the IOG set up the Young Board of Directors (YBD). The YBD are leading the Institute’s ‘Get into Grounds’ strategy encouraging 14-16 year olds, school leavers and young people to consider a career in groundsmanship. Most members of the group entered the industry by volunteering at a local sports club and learnt the skills and gained the experience they needed as they went along. You can follow the YBD on Twitter; @iogyoungboard or on Facebook; ‘The IOG Young Board’. Alternatively you can e-mail us at youngboard@ iog.org and head to www.iog.org for more information on the IOG and the Young Board of Directors. 2016 was the first LANDSCAPE Show that the IOG Young Board of Directors attended. We found the variety of exhibitors along with the quality of attendees invaluable, and therefore made no hesitation in deciding to come back for 2017. Due to the quality of exhibitors and visitors, the IOG Young Board made many useful connections that we have greatly benefitted from since the show last year.

NLA

New London Architecture (NLA) is London’s centre for discussion, debate and information about architecture, planning, development and construction in the capital. Our mission is to bring people together to shape a better city.

TREE AID TREE AID works in the dry lands of Africa, planting trees and helping to build thriving and sustainable communities. TREE AID’s projects are teaching villagers the nutritious and financial value of tree products, which is having a particularly positive impact on the lives of women. 70% of the participants on their projects are women; TREE AID is passionate about providing women with access to trees because tree products provide the whole family with an income and livelihood. In Ghana and many West African countries although education is free, children cannot attend school without owning a school uniform. Being part of a TREE AID project is providing women with the income and ability to give their children access to vital education and opportunities for their future. It wasn’t long ago that women were excluded from honey making altogether. ‘Traditionally it was the men of the village who produced honey, and we women were excluded. TREE AID approached women in the village, and showed them that they could also produce honey.’ said Suzanne, who is president of the Women’s Forest Group for Women’s Forest Livelihoods project.

A year-round programme of events, research, exhibitions and awards examines all issues affecting London’s built environment and invites all those with a stake in the future of the city to have their say - built environment professionals, politicians and the public. NLA has established itself over the last decade as a broker between all those involved in planning and designing the future of London and as an independent champion for the capital’s built environment. Our work is supported by a growing membership of some 500 organisations from across the public and private sectors. The NLA galleries at The Building Centre in WC1, centred around our giant interactive model of central London, are free to visit six days a week. NLA are proud to have supported the LANDSCAPE Show for the last 4 years, finding the show to be the perfect place to both help educate and forge new relationships. This year we will be having focused sessions on the built environment, hoping to demonstrate the importance of the landscape and architectural sectors working together.

To find out more about the charity and their work, come to the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Perennial

Proludic Ltd What if we could build playgrounds that took children by surprise? What would we build? The answer to this of course lies with the imagination of the designer. There are some amazing play spaces all over the world that have taken inspiration from nature, land forms and buildings. Often on a large scale these play structures are works of art and sit within city locations and large conurbations, as playground designers we should all aspire to emulate this within play spaces that are accessible to children and in reach of their homes. Children do not have the freedom to ‘roam’ as they once did; the reasons include parental restrictions borne out of fear of harm and the safety issues brought about by the dominance of traffic in today’s world. It is therefore, as important as ever to make play opportunities accessible in every way for all children. What if we emulated through a unique bespoke structure that was beyond their imagination? In August 2017, Proludic saw the launch of the Queen Elizabeth Class Carrier. They sought to create a playful space that was inspired by this great vessel. Within this theme the design team crafted 4 main bespoke play equipment items – The Flight Control Tower, The Ship Control Tower, The F35 Fighter Jet and the Merlin Helicopter. There is a balance and synergy between design and play, with 63 individual play activities; it is rich in play value. The large bespoke pirate ship installed in Markeaton Park Derby transports children into the world of play, stimulating their own imagination irrespective of gender, age or ability.

Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough. Life’s challenges such as illness, injury or loss of income can strike at any time and their effects can be devastating, especially for those working in jobs that rely on physical health and fitness. Perennial helps by offering free and confidential advice as well as practical and emotional support, which also extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Its team of Caseworkers and Debt Advisers across the UK tailor the support they give to the specific needs of each individual. Many of us support charities as a way of giving something back, and what better than choosing a cause close to home that helps the people within our own industry? Perennial relies on income from its supporters to deliver its services to those that need them. There is still a way to go before Perennial and the help it offers is known by everyone in the industry. As the leading landscaping trade event, LANDSCAPE is a very valuable platform for Perennial to raise awareness and increase support.

RHS

Johnsons Wellfield Situated on the outskirts of Huddersfield in the Yorkshire Pennines, Johnsons Wellfield is one of Britain’s leading suppliers of natural hard Yorkstone. ‘Crosland Hill’ Yorkstone is one of the most versatile natural stones available and its technical capabilities are renowned throughout the industry, making it the stone of choice for prestigious building and landscaping projects.

RHS Shows aim to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture in all its many branches, showcasing an exhibit will inspire visitors to enrich their lives through plants and make the UK a greener, more beautiful place. RHS Shows run throughout the year and offer a wealth of opportunities for designers, landscapers, growers and providers of garden products. We look forward to see you all at the LANDSCAPE Show and sharing the fantastic opportunities on offer at all of the RHS Shows.

The latest robot technology combined with computer aided design manufacturing control systems complement the traditional diamond and shot-sawn cutting processes, which provide ultimate flexibility in product manufacture. This hi-tech manufacturing environment offers designers the freedom to see imaginative and innovative proposals being transformed into an almost limitless range. Furthermore, Johnsons Wellfield donated 3 large blocks of Yorkstone for the creation of three 2 metre figures representing agriculture, mining and the monastic heritage of Pateley Bridge. The sculpture forms part of the ‘Way of the Roses’ public art trail, a coast to coast cycle route of 170 miles from Morecambe to Bridlington created by Sustrans. This route is very popular with cyclists and tourists. Pateley Bridge, being almost half way along the route, was selected as one of the major sites for a new piece of public art. The finished sculpture is an amazing sight. If you’d like to see more images of this unique creation or are interested in how the sculptures emerged from initial concept drawings through to completion, then come visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Society of Garden Designers The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has been championing excellence in garden design for over 35 years. It is the only professional association for garden designers in the UK and counts some of the UK’s leading garden and landscape designers among its growing membership. The SGD will be back at the LANDSCAPE Show for the 4th year, this September. Terrazza UK Eco Clean Tech Ltd There’s no feeling quite like returning after a long day to a well-presented home to be proud of. But getting your property to that state can be tricky without the right tools. Surface specialist, Eco Clean Tech, understand the desire to be house proud from the moment you enter the property while not wanting to spend hours getting it to this pristine state. That’s why, after selling the product nationally, they have decided to offer an exclusive cleaning service tailored to Cornwall. Jason Smith, director of the company, has a wealth of experience in helping home owners to protect their investment by restoring their property back to its former glory. He recalls one client with a lovely house and swimming pool, which was surrounded by beautiful sand stone that had only been laid two years before. Due to the nature of the surroundings the sand stone had become infected with black spot. After several attempts to clean the sand stone with pressure washing and numerous chemicals, the problem remained. The pressure washing had started to damage the joints; care had to be taken when using chemicals as their children often played in and around the pool. When the client first met Jason she was considering replacing the whole terrace; at a considerable expense and inconvenience. Jason explained that this would have only been a shorted lived solution to the problem due to the nature of their surroundings. To find out more about how Terrazza can help you, come see their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Stone Federation

Sue Moss Recently Sue has been working on re-developing the Master of Horticulture, which is a degree-level award and the Royal Horticultural Society’s most prestigious qualification. In an ever-evolving horticultural industry, they needed to ensure that their content reflected the latest research both in the UK and internationally. They worked closely with industry professionals to ensure that their new content both inspires and challenges their candidates. After extensive research, they realised the need to make the award even more accessible to their international audience. Traditionally the programme required candidates to travel to RHS Garden Wisley for the launch of each module – this has all changed. The course is now delivered through their online Virtual Learning Environment. This shift has not only allowed them to target previously untapped audiences, but also gives their UK candidates greater flexibility. When redeveloping the programme, it was essential to them that the MHort was flexible, as the qualification is designed for professional horticulturists who wish to study whilst working full time. The MHort has been in existence since 1913, so in some aspects it has been challenging to alter pre-conceptions about the award, as well as ensuring they exceed the RHS’s high standard of education.

JUB Holland The 31st edition of the Horticulture Entrepreneur Prize has been won by JUB Holland in Noordwijkerhout. This leading entrepreneur will act as an ambassador for the horticulture sector for the next year. JUB Holland was presented with the prestigious entrepreneur prize during the well-attended New Year event in January at Keukenhof, Lisse. The jury was impressed by this stable family business because of the long family tradition, but also because of the wide range of activities within the chain. The commitment of five generations has enabled the company to achieve a distinctive position within the international market. The Bike Shed Company At The Bike Shed Company they offer a range of popular three and five bike shed models, as well as, matching bin and recycling storage units for the home and workplace. However, bespoke design has always been at the heart of what they do. They specialise in working with their clients to find the best storage solutions for awkward spaces or to accommodate specific requirements. With all of their designs, their approach has always been focused on three key elements: practicality, security and style. A recent project involved designing a bike shed and matching store for dustbins. Wanting to keep the profile of the units as low as possible, the bike shed was required to be sunk down 300mm to match the height of the lower bin store. Talking directly with the client and discussing future use, they created two identical units and sank both of them. In the bin store they installed a removable floor so the bins could be easily accessed at ground level, but if required at a later date, the floor could be removed to accommodate additional bicycles.

Streetscape Social Enterprise is a London based charity, dedicated to growing the lives of 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, disadvantaged and socially excluded. We do this by providing 15-month salaried apprenticeships in landscape gardening, where apprentices work towards a qualification in Horticulture. Our core aim is to help each apprentice build the skills and experience they need to move into, and retain, work and, in so doing, rise above social exclusion, and reach their full potential. Integral to this is our Social Enterprise model, wherein we offer garden design, landscaping, and maintenance services to residential, community, and commercial clients across Greater London. The quality of our apprentice work has been recognised by gardens built at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in 2015 and 2016. We are committed to Growing lives, Transforming landscapes. We are delighted to support the LANDSCAPE Show once again and to take the opportunity to create greater awareness of our apprenticeships within the industry. As a charity operating as a landscape contractor, the Show links us to new suppliers, allowing us to offer an even better service to our clients. Thank you LANDSCAPE Show.

Liaising with the garden designer and site builder, they ensured that the sunken space for the sheds was exact and with adequate drainage and airflow. They are very proud of the result and the client thinks they look fantastic! They look forward to welcoming you to their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

i-glo Glow in the dark pigments are extremely expensive and as a result are only available commercially in low pigment concentrations. They have developed a process that is able to transfer a thin layer of pigment at high concentrations around the surface of glass beads, which forms the building blocks of their product range. The glass beads allow the absorption and transmission of light, thereby maximising the after-glow both in terms of intensity and duration lasting up to 12 hours in darkness. i-glo is unique in providing a maintenance free light source, as there are no batteries or wiring to breakdown, with the ability to undergo unlimited charging cycles. i-glo decking discs are their latest concept for outdoor areas where aesthetics, as well as safety, are an important factor. A circular recess is created using a 50mm cutting disc to which adhesive is dispensed prior to inserting the decking disc. The glow discs can be charged by natural or artificial light emitting blue and green light as an after-glow, creating a subtle ambience in your outdoor living space. Their block paving comprises a glow in the dark insert within a concrete block which can be installed around the perimeter of a driveway, edge of a path, parking bays or as part of a landscaping feature. To see more from i-glo’s range, visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Simon O’Rourke Ltd ‘The Guardian’, no, not the newspaper, was a project to raise awareness for the charity organisation called BornFree. Simon was contacted by a photographer called Maria Slough, who was producing a photographic exhibition called Pawtraits. The premise of the exhibition was that various people would be photographed with the animals that represent the charity of their own choosing. The BornFree founder Virginia McKenna OBE was one of the sitters and as you might expect, did not want to be photographed with a real lion! Maria did some research on sculptures of lions and came across his work, after a few conversations, Simon was booked to travel down to Virginia’s home and in two days, create a life-size lion from a large piece of oak. The sculpture was very well received and is much loved, being a permanent part of Virginia’s garden. It was an honour for Simon to meet Virginia, and to be a part of a worthwhile cause. Come meet Simon and examples of his work at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

With a vast array of decking products now on offer, how can you be sure you are choosing one that will perform to your expectations? Independent help and advice is at hand from the Timber Decking and Cladding Association whose mission is to help ensure that all decking installations perform to good standards. Properly designed and constructed timber decking will provide years and years of trouble free service with a little annual maintenance. Whether you’re going to do the work yourself or using the services of a professional installer, it is definitely worth doing your research before you start. Using good quality and preferably endorsed products is a must. For decking, the TDCA operates a quality scheme called DeckMark® whereby materials or services are audited annually for compliance with the standards set by the TDCA. This gives you peace of mind that you are dealing with a reputable company. You will find details of accredited installers and material suppliers on the TDCA decking website or the decking calculator APP, available for I-phone and Android. Timber is a truly amazing, natural material. Every piece is unique. With inherent warmth and beauty, timber has the ability to soften and accentuate buildings and landscapes like no other material and offers a winning combination of versatility, economy and environmental credentials to any building project. We are supporting the LANDSCAPE Show this year. It’s a nice show, easily accessible with guest speakers galore and a variety of exhibitors. It provides a great opportunity to see and learn about products and services on offer and network with people from the landscaping industry. To visit the TDCA decking website go to www.tdca.org.uk.

Jo Thompson

In 2017 the first ever RHS Chatsworth Flower Show took place in the spectacular grounds of Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire’s Peak District. The Brewin Dolphin Garden, in the new FreeForm category, was an installation celebrating the landscape of the 1,000-acre parkland and the elegance and beauty of Chatsworth House. Embracing the majestic setting of Chatsworth House, the garden made the most of the beautiful views and natural curves of the landscape, providing a spectacular contemporary viewpoint, from which to enjoy ‘Capability’ Brown’s historic vistas. Sited on the banks of the River Derwent, the scale of the garden reflected the grandeur of its setting, combining contemporary industrial materials with naturalistic planting. Central to the design was an imposing contemporary sculpture crafted from reinforcing steel bars which swept through the space, taking in the shape of the river before cantilevering dramatically out over the water. It hung suspended in mid-air before sweeping back to the riverbank and spiralling into a circular enclosed building. A series of garden areas dotted along the sculpture’s main frame were connected by wildflower turf following the organic shape of the structure. At one end, majestic field maples and hornbeams created a glade of trees surrounded by meadow. At the other, an ornamental garden curved around the imposing steel building, with a soft pastel planting palette of blues and pinks with highlights of apricot contrasted with the patina of the steel sculpture. Jo Thompson will be holding a joint seminar session with Nina Baxter at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park, register for your free ticket at www.landscapeshow.co.uk to hear her speak.

Oxford Planters Ltd

Oxford Planters is a leading Cotswold based manufacturer of high end hardwood planters, garden furniture and hardwood structures. Oxford Planters is a well-established company manufacturing since 2004. They supply private individuals as well as garden designers from around the world. Oxford Planters recently became involved in a project in London where the air conditioning units from an indoor swimming pool vented into the garden. The architect specified the design to cover the vents needed to be in keeping with the current garden design, while also being fit for purpose and aesthetically pleasing. Oxford Planters were given free rein to design a piece of furniture or screening that would accommodate the architect’s requirements. The London Obelisk, was then designed and put into production, it was handcrafted from Accoya, and painted in Smoke Green. The design worked beautifully in the garden and was spray painted to match the existing colour in the garden. The London Obelisk can be made in any size to accommodate specific requirements. Oxford Planters are looking forward to exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE show this September and invite you to view their wonderful range of products in Battersea Park.

Moore Concrete Products Ltd Urban sprawl calls for innovative green solutions that reduce the ecological footprint of concrete based infrastructure. Typical green roofs or green walls systems usually demand elaborate soil and watering system, however this is not the case in ECOncrete® Bio Active concrete wall tile design, that has a bio-enhanced substrate that supports the growth of mosses, lichens and climbing vegetation and doubles as a highly aesthetic decorate façade. The innovative ECOncrete®Bio Active wall tiles differ from standard concrete units on three levels; concrete chemistry, surface rugosity and 3D macro complexity. These three elements work in synergy to mimic the features of natural surfaces thus enhancing the walls ability to support rich flora of plants that require little or no soil. ECOncrete®’s unique Bio Active wall mix is tailored to keep the pH of water encountering the surface low, as opposed to the highly alkaline pH of water accumulated on standard concrete. The high surface rugosity, and the unique 3D design includes micro pores, rugged textures, and varying elevations, increase the walls ability to capture water and moisture, thus further contributing to flora growth as well as increasing their ability to effectively latch onto the wall surface. ECOncrete®Bio Active wall tiles were used in the construction of a biological pond and fountain at the BIG commercial centre (Ashdod Israel). This installation demonstrated the ability of the tiles to receive rich and diverse foliage, mimicking natural waterfall/spring plant life in an urban setting. For additional information please visit the Moore Concrete Products stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

COMPETITION

Architectural Plants Phillyrea latifolia ‘Niwaki’

When Jake Hobson joined Architectural Plants around the turn of the century, his oriental gardening experience was quickly put to use. The idea of growing their own ‘Niwaki’ - rather than continuing to import from Japan - was highly appealing. ‘Niwaki’ is Japanese for ‘garden tree’, this lead to the Phillyrea latifolia as the perfect choice of tree to be ‘Niwaki’d’. They made that decision in about 1998 and have stuck with it ever since. Not only is it shapely in the extreme, but tough as old boots to the point of being impregnable.

Porcel Pave

PorcelQuick System PorcelQuick aims to save you time and money when installing external porcelain tiles. No need for a time-consuming solid base or messy wet bed – the patent-pending Adpeds help you save up to 80% in materials and reduce the carbon footprint of the project. The Adpeds, which need to be filled with sand and cement, are made from strong polystyrene and can easily be snapped to fit edges and corners. A contemporary patio can be installed and grouted within one day. Stainless steel trims are available for quick finishing for edges and the system is backed by a 25 year guarantee.

They selected their finest Phillyrea Niwaki, field grown by Jake Hobson himself. Bask under its glory at their stand.

Grestec Tiles External 20

External 20 is the ideal solution for exterior paving; intended for large-scale commercial and landscape projects. The 20mm thick porcelain slabs can be installed traditionally with screed, placed onto adjustable pedestals, or alternatively dry-laid directly onto grass, sand or gravel. The external system is waterproof, frost-proof, removable and reusable; making it a sustainable choice of surface. It is easy to install and has dimensions to guarantee the longevity demanded by the diverse requirements of outdoor paving.

Harrod Horticultural Metal Raised Beds

Harrod Horticultural Metal Raised Beds successfully combine technical innovation and a contemporary look, creating a stunning range of raised beds which really are built to last. The planters are powder coated for a stylish weather-proof finish and are available in a range of sizes from 0.6m to 2.4m and 3 heights. They are designed and manufactured in the UK by their award winning design team. They have double folded plank construction for strength and prevent bowing and come with a 10 year structural guarantee. They are also powder coated inside and out using their unique 7 stage, state of the art, high temperature powder coating process, and have bolt together construction with stainless steel fixings.

This year with the help of our speakers, trade associations and media partners, we have chosen a short list of the submitted products to be judged at our ‘Best in Show’ competition. To choose your favourite, simply take your token to the competition display area at the front of the hall and drop your token into your chosen winner’s box! The winner will be announced on Wednesday 20th September at the show. Every vote counts so dont forget to have your say!

Hy-Tex

Versiwall™ VersiWall™ is an extremely versatile, easy-to-install, low maintenance modular vertical green wall system, which offers a cost-effective and practical solution to turn monotonous walls into aesthetically-pleasing and beneficial living plant walls. At the heart of this professional system is the planting tray which can be mounted in a variety of ways (plastic panels, weld mesh or steel rods) to suit project requirements and provide creative planting possibilities.

BLOCQ seating range A massive block supported by sharp angles-particularly this contrast has astonishing effect in the public space. The Blocq range also includes trapezoidal single seater stools. Dual-coloured powder coating of the steel frame is the latest unique feature, offered in six colour combinations. The backed models can be fitted with a durable steel table to place a drink, a laptop or a book. The contrast colour of the table also brings a vibrant accent. The USB charging slot will be very handy when you want to spend more time outdoors. The integrated LED lighting comes to the fore in the evening.

Key advantages include: modular design, curved walls, multiple mounting options, flexible tray spacing, secure anchorage, 1.8l planter capacity, efficient irrigation, easy installation, simple maintenance, strong and durable plus fire resistant version available.

Stone Wood Services

The Giulia Sun Lounger & Table The Giulia sun lounger and table, just as all their products, were made from top quality materials. The combination of steel with oak wood makes their furniture extremely sublime. Carbon steel frame is galvanized and powder painted on the customer’s choice from the RAL colour palette and is available in 9 colours. The wood used in these series of their furniture is specially selected oak wood. To provide the best protection against weather conditions, wood is pressure-treated with specialised paints available in 6 colours. They are an excellent choice for urban spaces, private gardens, and green areas around hotels and restaurants.

WaterWood

Outdoor Decking & Terraces WaterWood stands for ecological and highly durably hardwood harvested from the Brokopondo-Reservoir in Suriname. When the reservoir was created, due to the construction of a power plant, the forest in the valley was inundated. Hundreds of thousands trees died, but were also naturally impregnated by the fresh water. Now, 60 years later, the trees are felled and serve as the ideal material for European terraces. WaterWood offers three highly resistant wood species perfectly suited for outdoor decking. So far, hundreds of thousands square meters of WaterWood terraces have been built in Europe - with more yet to come.

Health and wellbeing, air quality, placemaking, bio diversity are the most important issues cities of today have to address. Landscaping addresses them all, but is it well enough recognised by planners and politicians? How do we ensure that landscape is considered right at the start of city-making, instead of being the bit that fills the gaps between the building?

Pots of Distinction Ltd At Pots of Distinction, they are keeping the rare art of handcrafted pots alive. They use techniques that have been around for centuries, each of their large pots are authentically made from natural clay by craftsmen in Southeast Asia and fired in a traditional wood burning kiln that reaches temperatures of 1000-1200 degrees centigrade. At this high temperature, the material becomes naturally frost-proof and tough enough to hold strong in winter blizzards, wind and rain. The large Hanoi Pot is one of their most popular items. Not only is it strong enough to be used in all outdoor locations, but it is rustic and elegant enough to make a feature out of simple trees, such as these olive trees. The warm colour of the Hanoi Pot adds a welcoming, Mediterranean feel and they are large enough to brighten up even the greyest of landscapes. The simplicity of the Hanoi Pot works well in a whole multitude of settings; its size, strength and ease of use make it ideal for large garden projects. It also becomes a great main feature in smaller gardens and its simplicity means it suits both traditional and modern designs, a real all-rounder. Visit their stand to meet the team at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Woodscape Bespoke hardwood slatted seating and picnic sets create an inspiring and relaxing outdoor space for students at Manchester University. The Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, named after the University of Manchester President and Vice Chancellor, opened late 2012 on the University of Manchester Campus, Oxford Road. The £24 million project was considered the most innovative, contemporary approach to social studies in the UK, accommodating 1,000 flexible study spaces with a stimulating and inviting environment for students. The state of the art study and learning centre boasts an onsite café with an impressive atrium. Woodscape worked in close consultation to offer a responsive, bespoke design solution which was tailored to reflect the modern, iconic AGLC building, with the aim to offer an inspiring, multi-use outdoor landscaped space. The curved Clifton Bench was chosen as seating to complement the natural circulation through the outdoor space. The furniture was designed around the state-of-the-art speakers and multimedia screen, strategically placed to accommodate annual events at the University. To see more of their bespoke range and new projects, visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

HARROWDEN TURF HARROWDEN TURF currently offers five varieties of Meadowmat wild flower matting. Production manager Robert Allen is justifiably proud of his product and continually works to improve and develop it. This year Cottage Garden Meadowmat has had an interesting re-vamp. The most popular genera remain in the mix, but there has been a major change in the proportions of species. From summer 2017, Cottage Garden Meadowmat has had the proportion of grasses in the seed mix reduced to just 5%. It’s important to note here that this is the percentage of seed by weight – it doesn’t necessarily mean that the sward will contain 5% grass plants. And of course, as you’ll know, the balance of species will adapt year on year to its microclimate and management. Meadowmat is a pre-grown matting of flowering plants and grasses that can be installed just like turf in order to avoid the hassle of trying to establish wild flowers from seed. The new Cottage Garden Meadowmat contains a mix of 32, mostly native perennials, with a few cottage garden favourites and some colourful annuals thrown in for good measure. Unearth the species mix and find out more about Meadowmat by visiting Kevin and Mark at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Livingreen Design Ltd At Livingreen Design Ltd they try to cover all bases. They specialise in bespoke planters made in GRP which is fantastic for a good light weight solution for roof terraces, but also fantastic for street furniture as well as for every interior job. All their planters are manufactured 100% in their own facility in the UK with a fantastic team of trained horticulturalists and product designers; you can be guaranteed the very best of service and expert knowledge. Not just planters either, they create all sorts of products from GRP. The featured planter benches are situated in the south of France. The original design was for concrete, but the weight loading wouldn’t allow this so the technical team at Livingreen Design worked with the architect and landscaper to come up with the perfect solution, incorporating Iroko wood benches and LEDs. All the benches linked together on site, using only 3 shapes, to create a snaking look as well as grouping together to create planting pockets. Livingreen Design have a small showroom just on the outskirts of Edinburgh and they welcome visitors to the facility to see their products being created. Come and see them at LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park and discuss your next project or simply find out about the possibilities.

The Cleft Wood Co. Having been established over 25 years the Cleft Wood Co. have vast experience in producing cleft oak fencing materials and gates, as well as, major projects for the National Trust at Stowe and Charlecote Park. One project was to replace a tired softwood fence with something more in keeping with the 400 year old thatched house it surrounds. The Stowe Paling fencing is dog proof and will deter all including the most determined two legged intruders. The texture of the oak blends in with the thatch as well as its colour, which will tone down to the same as the thatch too. The rough-hewn Henge forms a bold and iconic frame for the Lambda Gate. The fencing is made by hand from English oak and is split along the grain rather than sawn, giving both a beautifully irregular, charming character and an integral strength. The oak is sourced from thinning’s where the best trees are left to grow on, they produce a range of fencing from Post and Rail to 6’ tall deer paling, gates, and building materials for restoration, all in cleft oak. For more information on their products please visit The Cleft Wood Co. at their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The client required both indoor and outdoor planters to be spread throughout the property; aluminium was the material of choice as this project was an eco-friendly building and is located in a coastal region. Planters manufactured from aluminium are a popular choice with clients due to the many advantageous characteristics of the material. It is a durable product that can be used both indoor and outdoor, as well as in coastal regions, where corrosion may occur on other materials. It is a lightweight material that reduces transportation costs and makes for easier installation on high-rise buildings. There are many different finish options for aluminium, which make it a versatile material for planters. Brushed, satin and powder coated options give clients the choice between natural metal finishes and colour finishes. The client wanted to create a feature by using white powder coated planters in alternating sizes on the entrance balcony area. Round topiary balls were placed in the cube planters to create contrast. Aluminium trough planters and more cube planters were used inside the office building. Visit the Allsorted team at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park to find out more about their exciting products.

Global Stone Stealing the show at this year’s Southport Flower Show was the award winning garden ‘kuro’. In collaboration with others, Global Stone revelled in the sweet success, with its Premium Porcelain Liquorice Paving playing a star role. A fascinating concept, winning not just one but four awards, ‘kuro’ offered two gardens in one. The first garden with its urban tones is set within water, leading the way is a beautiful porcelain pathway guiding you past a sunken firepit through to the second garden, a secluded woodland escape. This design beautifully encapsulated a sophisticated lifestyle with sleek lines framing a social area whilst encompassing an urban retreat. The Petrous Collection offers a superb range of paving with a versatile variation of style and sizes. Within this collection, the Petrous Premium Liquorice paving with its rich and dark tones works harmoniously with a lifestyle focussed approach to modern landscaping. For those wanting to strike a balance with traditional leisure gardening, this modern paving can create a unique juxtaposition for naturalistic planting styles. Easy to maintain and durable, porcelain is fast becoming the paving product of choice for the 21st century. Scratch and slip resistant, combined with its gently textured surface makes the Premium Porcelain Liquorice an ideal choice for patios and around pools. As porcelain is not affected by sunlight or natural weather conditions it retains it colour, keeping your landscape looking fresh throughout the seasons. Come see more from their fantastic range this September at the LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park.

BCA MATÉRIAUX ANCIENS

These photos demonstrate how a large scale conversion project to rationalise a 1900 industrial site, namely a French textile mill that specialised in the manufacture of French military uniforms, that could yield hundreds of square metres of superb antique reclaimed French oak. Many of the interior volumes had to be gutted for redevelopment and partly de-constructed, following the European Health and Safety guidelines. Dating from around 1900, all its upper floors featured thick oak boards nailed down to oak joists. The evaluation visit revealed that although the floors appeared dirty, dusty and uninspiring that in fact once washed, the boards have fantastic patina and that classic greyish antique oak colour with a beautiful grain. Walking through the abandoned levels with their very low ceilings, too low for David Ackers of BCA to stand upright, had the atmosphere of being below decks in an old sailing ship. These rooms where the garments were made were the classic sweat shops of the Industrial Revolution. The resulting thousands of square metres of antique oak floorboards, and other typical antique materials such as antique paving and flagstones are being used by architects and designers on top quality projects for exteriors and interiors, all across France and Europe but also the UK, the USA and Australia. Come see more of their beautiful oak at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Lux Lawns

Lux Lawns are one of the UK’s most experienced artificial grass installers. Based in Derbyshire, their professional fitters have been busy installing hundreds of artificial grass lawns across the UK since 2010. They cater to all-sized projects from small spaces to large lawns, patios to pool sides. Proud to install Luxury Artificial Grass premium quality, highly durable, incredibly realistic synthetic turf, quite simply - a grass above the rest. They were recently asked to install their artificial grass to a beautiful rear garden area that would be difficult to maintain if it was natural turf due to poor access and sloping ground. Their Classic Lux 30mm grass was chosen for its natural appearance, a must for this well landscaped garden set within the Peak District. Stone paving was also considered for the lower part of the area but was found to be less cost effective than artificial grass. The lawn looks sublime in its countryside surroundings with the client having this to say: “We are most pleased with the way it was done and the work carried out by the installation team. They were cheerful at all times and worked very hard on our difficult site. It has made all the difference to the garden and has already been much admired by neighbours and friends.” Their luxury lawns aren’t only suitable for natural turf replacement; they can also rejuvenate tired decking, brighten up bland patios and can add extra appeal to roof terraces. They are hard-wearing enough for high demand areas such as dog runs and play areas too. Visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE show to find out more this September in Battersea Park, where the team will be on hand to answer any questions you have.

NatraTex (by BituChem) NatraTex is the go-to product for hard landscaping! Not only is it colourful, versatile and durable; it’s also cost-effective when set against other aesthetic finishes. NatraTex is versatile, whether you’re looking to surface a footpath, a bus lane, or anything in between, NatraTex is the only product you need. Because NatraTex is hot and laid like conventional macadam, you know that the surface will be durable, providing years of maintenance free use, whatever the application. They’re friendly and straightforward to do business with and they can help from the very start of the design stage to the very end of the project. Their clients were very pleased with the NatraTex surfacing – a great appearance and finish. NatraTex really sets off the new timber school building and the warm tones create a welcoming setting for play. The clients would thoroughly recommend this product and they look forward to working with Natratex again soon. Construction work started on Fossebrook School in autumn 2015 and was completed in 2016 by Wilmott Dixon. This newly built, state-of-art primary school initially provides 210 primary school places to Leicestershire children. As well as the striking single story timber construction, a great deal of thought was given to the external works. Pay a visit to the team at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park if you’d like to know more.

Charlotte Rowe

This tiny courtyard of 35 square meters is squeezed into the centre of a mid-20th century house in Chelsea which was to have a major overhaul. The new layout of the house meant that the courtyard would be accessed and viewed from three sides: the drawing room, the new enlarged kitchen and from the garage. The new design needed to make this small space integral to the rest of the house which was to have a contemporary decorative feel, including a high-spec modern kitchen. Charlotte Rowe created a courtyard which looks good and has a point of interest from all angles. This includes a long narrow water rill raised above the ground with a cantilevered water spout in bronze, which echoes the material used for the canopy over the entrance to the kitchen. Around the water rill are raised beds, bench seating and a day bed all clad in the same pale limestone. This was selected for both the floors of the courtyard and the ground floor of the house, creating a calm coordinated and integrated space. The walls are rendered in the same colour and there is a cedar screen at high level to provide more privacy. Charlotte Rowe is one of the featured speakers at this year’s LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September. Register for your free tickets to hear her at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

Niwaki Ltd As professional gardeners, tool sharpening is second nature but if you haven’t quite got in the habit, Niwaki can help with a full range of products to keep your tools in tip-top condition. The first and most important tip is probably to buy decent tools in the first place, soft steel of inferior tools will not hold its edge or sharpen well, so treat yourself to some Japanese steel and you will reap the rewards. If your tools are old and a bit rusty there is still hope, a product such as Crean Mate rust eraser can be used to easily remove any dirt and rust with water or oil, rub back and forwards just like an eraser. For damaged blades of secateurs and shears use a Diamond Twin File to file back down to a smooth edge, removing any nicks in the blades, start with the rougher side and finish with the finer side. If your tools are new-ish then you can skip straight to a sharpening stone such as, the new range of Niwaki Sharpening Stones. The sharpening stones are especially designed for secateurs, but also great for shears, topiary clippers and other sharp stuff. Come see more of their Japanese steel range at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

CED Stone Group There’s nothing better than a project that shows off natural stone from the UK in the best way possible, like the communal sculpture built at Ruskin Square in Croydon. The sculpture connects the town centre and the train station, this creative space focuses on the raw materials of building developments and their ‘un-made’ state. The brief envisioned a rockery area that would look like a natural rock face when viewed from the surrounding high-rise buildings. Large blocks of Caithness from CED Stone Group were selected straight from the quarry in Scotland. The material’s flat top and bottom creates a dramatic moving effect, the blocks rise up out of trees and planted into a craggy peak. CED keeps an extensive range of natural stone products across their six nationwide depots, they understand that natural stone needs to work in different ways because each project is completely unique, meaning their expert team will take the time to listen and get behind your vision. The CED team will be showcasing their Caithness stone from their Scottish collection at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea, and will also be introducing their new StoneBed range – a selection of paving solutions that will ensure your paving project maintains a flawless finish.

Trans-European Stone Ltd Trans-European are thrilled that the “Command of the Oceans Project” at the Historic Chatham Dockyard on the river Medway in Kent, has been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Sterling Prize 2017. The project has already won 4 RIBA awards including; RIBA South East, RIBA South East Conservation, RIBA South East Building of the Year and the RIBA National Award. The 84-acre site is of great archaeological and historical significance, with a chequered history spanning over 400 years, from the Spanish armada to the Falklands crisis. The project architects specified over 2,300 m2 of Belgian blue limestone paving, with a tumbled finish for the external landscaping. Trans-European Stone supplied the Belgian blue limestone from the quarry Les Carriés de la Pierre Bleue Belge for the external landscaping. The 200mm widths of random lengths between 300-600mm were given a tumbled finish to give an antique and weathered look, seamlessly blending the old and the new. “The architect’s decided to use Belgian blue limestone for the external landscaping on this project due to its colour and range of textures and finishes. Its lasting durability will continue to welcome visitors for many, many years”. Come see more of their range at their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Ashwells Timber

Ashwells Timber has the pleasure of sharing this innovative garden room project, designed to the client’s specification. When asked to summarise their requirements the clients said, “We wanted something that would look natural and fits with the environment. We wanted wood that looks like wood; wood that would be robust and long lasting”. Ashwells were approached to discuss the various options of reclaimed tropical hardwood. It was decided that Jarrah, Eucalyptus diversicolor which originates from Australia, would be perfect. Not only is it a very durable timber but it provided the striking red colour and textures specified by the client. The clients were also pleased that the timber had total ecological merit. Ashwells reclaimed the 230x50mm timber from Tilbury Docks in Essex, where in its previous life it was used as decking boards for pedestrian access on to the ferries. Once it was back at Ashwells premises the metal fixings were removed, and the boards were cut down into 230x23mm to make this striking cladding. Ashwells will be exhibiting a selection of their bespoke timbers at the year’s LANDSCAPE show in September in Battersea Park and would be happy to discuss future projects.

Sunrock Balconies Sunrock Balconies have installed glass balustrades in the Lake District at the Barrow Golf Club in Barrow-in-Furness. Which they say “is a jewel set amidst the splendor of the Lake District and the beauty of the Furness peninsula”. Built on top of a low brick wall on the veranda, the glass balustrades have stainless steel uprights between each panel of toughened glass. Sunrock barbican balustrades can have a steel top rail or handrail, but in this instance to maximise the view it wasn’t necessary. Because of the elevated position, overlooking the Duddon estuary and the Lake District mountains, these glass balustrades allow members and visitors to see the championship golf course, to view it in all its glory, all the while with protection from any winds. You can see more information on Sunrock barbican stainless steel and glass balustrades at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Platipus Anchors Limited

Platipus were thrilled to have been involved in the creation of this imagined space in an urban apartment block, created by Gold Medal Winner Kate Gould. ‘City Living’ invited visitors to a series of greened spaces built across three different levels, using innovative materials and overhead screening to provide privacy to the user. Steel boundary structures echoed those of the building façade creating a sense of enclosure, whilst the use of a water feature, communal seating areas and structural planting brought a sense of peace and tranquillity to the space. This multi-level garden was designed to highlight the importance of greening inner city spaces, not just for residents’ enjoyment but to benefit the environment as a whole. With three trees included in the scheme and all planted on different levels, a reliable fixing system was required to secure them in order to provide a safe environment for the visitors to the showground. A Hippophae Rhamnoides on the top floor and two Crataegus on the mezzanine were anchored using the Platipus Rootball Fixing System with Plati-Mat®. This system allowed for rapid installation of the trees in tight working areas, whilst providing a safe and secure anchoring system, without the need for above ground stakes or guy wires. To speak to Platipus to find out more come visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Landscaper

The Landscaper since it was first published nearly 20 years ago with it’s succinct, no nonsense independent editorial has always been a firm favourite with landscapers, designers, landscape contractors, greenkeepers and groundsmen. The title has had three owners, the founder Chris Floate, Metropolis International Ltd and since 2014 Curtis Media Ltd. The last three years have seen a sharp and sustained growth in the magazines advertising revenue. This is due to a number of factors. The printed version of the magazine has been upgraded with perfect binding, improved paper quality, better design and most importantly a significant increase in pagination with 80 to 100 pages per issue now the norm. The digital footprint of The Landscaper has increased in size by not only increasing its UK readership but also by building a sizable international following. The page turner version of the magazine has achieved an incredible 81,699 impressions and our monthly newsletter gets double the industry average open rate on Mail Chimp 11/7/2017. From the 28 days following August 21st The Landscapers tweets achieved 117, 900 impressions. There is no doubt that the move from a large publishing concern to a family business has also proved to be beneficial. Curtis Media Ltd is dedicated to just one magazine and not in the business of organising exhibitions or award ceremonies. Their costs and staffing levels are therefore kept to a minimum which means they are able to offer extremely competitive advertising rates. Come and meet the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

dot-spot German external lighting manufacturer dotspot are growing from strength to strength and to assist with their aggressive expansion plans appointed London based Flairlight to be its sole UK distributor. “Flairlight were a perfect choice to distribute our product due to their approach, technical expertise and reputation in the UK to supply quality products to high class projects” said Claus Hammer International Sales Manager. The products are fitted with a unique feature called “Thermo Protect” this internal device monitors the LED chip temperature to the heat sink and luminaire body, in the event that the products get dangerously close to the maximum recommended temperature of the chip the “Thermo Protect” system cleverly reduces the wattage to the chip and reduces light output, which in turn reduces heat, thus protecting the chip and safe guarding your investment. Why should it get hot? Usually when the external temperature is higher than normal and the fittings are left on during the day. At night, the “Thermo Protect” system will never be in operation. One of dot-spot’s biggest markets are the Middle East where ambient temperatures are often in excess of 45°C. “The quality and reliability of this range of products is outstanding” commented Mike Eddowes Director of Flairlight, “in 30 years I have never picked up a product and thought wow this is quality, the materials performance and operation are second to none.” Come and see the range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

AZPECTS LTD When timber decking gets wet it gets slippery - people often suffer injuries as a result. Until recently there hasn’t been much you could do about it without drastically changing the appearance of the decking however Azpects have found the solution, they call it Deck Magic. Not only does it give an enhanced slip resistance to wet decking it also resists algae, fungal growth and staining whilst maintaining its natural appearance! It can be applied to new and old, bare or tanalised decking, but not suitable for coated timber. Being a water-based sealer it also allows wood to breathe naturally, preserving the life of the timber. How does it work, Magic? Well not quiet, it contains a clever formula that reacts with water to rise out of the timber, like thousands of microscopic fingers, giving significant slip resistance on wet decking. Azpects have an independently commissioned report stating, ‘Decking treated with EASYSeal Deck Magic provided a higher level of traction than untreated samples and also resisted the build-up of algae. The level of slip risk presented to pedestrians on the decking reduced from high-risk where untreated to low-risk on the treated samples as per HSE guidelines for slip resistance’. So if you have timber decking and want slip resistant decking, without changing its appearance, order Deck Magic now from Azpects on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

AVANT Tecno UK Ltd Owning a honey farm may sound like a relaxing job, but moving the hives around in the middle of the night was no easy task for the Wallace family of Quince Honey Farm in Devon. Each year the hives must be moved to different locations to allow the bees to access particular crops. In Spring the hives are placed in oilseed rape fields, in Summer they are near the wildflowers in the hedgerows, and in the Autumn the hives return to South Molton for the local heather. Each different crop enables the bees to produce honey with different flavours. While making honey might sound easy, Ian explained that moving the hives by hand three times a year was “brutal, heavy work.” Ian doubted there was a machine that would fit the bill until he found the Avant 200, which is compact enough to tow behind a 4x4 or tractor. Ian explained that one year while moving the hives to the rape fields at 3am their cars got stuck, and after much revving of engines, a concerned local resident called the police, which led to the police car getting stuck too! However once the Avant was unloaded they were able to tow all the vehicles out of the field. Avant manufactures a wide range of compact, 4-wheel drive machines, which can be fitted with a very comprehensive range of accessories to meet the many varied requirements of the hire market to make general maintenance jobs, easy and less labour intensive. Come and talk to Avant about their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

WaterWood WaterWood stands for ecological and highly durably hardwood harvested from the Brokopondo-Reservoir in Suriname. The Lake is one of the largest reservoirs in the world. It contains a treasure which cannot be ignored: Millions of cubic metres of wood of the highest quality. Today, 60 years after the reservoir was created due to the construction of a power plant, the trees are felled and serve as the ideal material for European terraces. Harvesting these trees serves the environment enormously, as they would eventually rod and release climate-damaging methane gas. WaterWood offers three highly resistant wood species perfectly suited for outdoor decking: Walaba, Guyana Teak, and Fava. Guyana Teak, for instance, is durable and tough. It impresses with its warm, brown colour and a discreet wood structure. Its weather resistance makes this wood ideal for the construction of high quality terraces. In the maritime sector, Guyana Teak has been used worldwide for decades as a highly resistant wood. All planks are dried and smooth planed in the Netherlands guaranteeing a high quality standard of the finished goods. So far, hundreds of thousands square meters of WaterWood terraces have been built in Europe - with more yet to come. CORNISH CONCRETE PRODUCTS Specialising in the design and manufacture of precast concrete products, CCP offer customers a high level of technical advice and design expertise. Understanding that no two projects are the same, they pride themselves in providing innovative, creative, cost effective solutions to exceed their client requirements. Precast concrete elements are becoming ever popular within the hard landscaping sector due to their capabilities to withstand harsh weather conditions. The design and manufacturing possibilities of precast concrete are virtually endless and can be cast in a variety of different shapes and sizes. In a scheme to regenerate a public space area in Southampton Station Quarter, they provided a series of curved precast steps, seating units and planters. Due to the complexity of the project, their design team led early on discussions with the client to ensure ease of manufacture along with an aesthetically pleasing design. During the manufacturing process they utilised steel, timber, GRP and polystyrene forms to create the multitude of different shapes required. All units were manufactured in a white cement based concrete, using blackhill aggregate. The units were finished with a heavy acid etch. Greenfingers Charity Greenfingers Charity commissioned TV gardener Adam Frost to design the new Courtyard Garden at Keech Hospice, Luton with the help of students of the Homebase Gardening Academy. As an existing good friend of Greenfingers, the charity was delighted to invite Adam to perform the official opening ceremony. This is the 53rd therapeutic and recreational garden built by Greenfingers Charity in children’s hospices around the UK from the Isle of Wight to Loch Lomond. Funding for this project very much relied on the generosity of the Homebase DIY chain who have been donating all the 5p carrier bag tax collected since the levy was introduced in October 2015. The original plain space was transformed from a drab concrete courtyard with the muscles and resources of skilled craftsmen. They created a colourful, three-dimensional garden with easy access for wheelchairs using plants that will delight all the senses of the adults and children who spend time at Keech Hospice Care. This team will also be commissioned by Greenfingers Charity to work on the design and build at another children’s hospice garden in the grounds of St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice, which is due to be created later this year. Until now the garden at Keech Hospice Care, which supports adults from Luton and South Bedfordshire, and children from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes, has remained relatively bereft of interesting plants or features since the hospice opened twenty-six years ago. Find out more about how Greenfingers can help you and others by popping by their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Green-Tech Ltd Green-Tech are proud to play their part in supplying the landscaping materials used in a memorial to honour the many servicemen of World War II who passed through the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Burscough, known as HMS Ringtail. HMS Ringtail is an old World War II airfield in Lancashire. Dalefoot Composts An enterprising Cumbrian family firm, that makes peat free compost from sheep’s wool and bracken, has featured in a new BBC TV series championing rural entrepreneurs. Dalefoot Composts, based on a 120-acre family farm in the hills of the Lake District, was highlighted on ‘Back to the Land’ presented by Kate Humble on BBC 2. The documentary series travelled the UK meeting the growing band of rural entrepreneurs who have forged their own innovative products and businesses from the land. The programme took a behind-the-scenes look at Dalefoot’s eco compost-making using wool and bracken from the Cumbrian fells. The family who run Dalefoot Composts, Jane Barker and husband Simon Bland, were filmed throughout the year for the episode and their 11-year-old daughter Arabella also made an appearance, helping Kate and her parents with lambing. The enterprising couple began manufacturing compost and selling mail order 20 years ago, prompted by diminishing returns from their sheep farming business. Using Simon’s practical farming knowledge and the scientific input of Jane, who holds a PhD in Environmental Science, they began their composting using bracken – a by-product of their environmental and habitat restoration work - before adding wool to the mixture. Their sustainable Wool Compost range, which is now widely used by gardeners across the UK, boasts wool from their own flock. Benefits include natural water retention of wool fibres means up to 50% less watering. Wool provides a steady, slow sustained supply of nitrogen and high levels of natural potash from the bracken promotes flowering and fruiting, healthy growth and hearty crops - no need for any additional plant food. They worked close with the team to design and create a unique ultra-modern looking courtyard for the newly developed student accommodation. The 19metre planter with seating to the front was constructed from heavy-duty sleepers then clad with 4x1 planned boards. They also supplied over 50 planters adjacent from the 19metre planter along with benches with internal lighting. All were then finished with 3 coats of Sadolin Superdec Opaque wood protection in battleship grey which finished it off perfectly. Over 250 pressure treated sleepers used and something in the region of 1000m of 95 x 45mm treated cladding was used. BronzeWork

BronzeWork is a Suffolk-based custom metalwork company specialising in bespoke projects which feature in both historic and modern environments. Pieces range from door furniture through to balustrades and railings. The most successful outcomes are where they can work closely with the client to find the best solution before production. This may involve making prototypes or test pieces to check assumptions, particularly to check the dynamics of a piece. The less successful projects tend to be rushed with ill-defined parameters. Sometimes a simple sketch can go straight to production, but it is often useful to work up the design using Computer Aided Design to evaluate options and to create working drawings as in this garden table designed by Douglas Mackie. Once the design was settled, the parts were profiled, and the whole powder-coated. It is a good example of how they do old things using modern techniques and new things in a traditional way. Hunter Industries For young plants and trees to thrive, they must receive adequate irrigation and a steady exchange of oxygen across all levels of the root zone. This encourages roots to grow deep and remain safely below ground, allowing plants to become strong and fully established. At the same time, water savings remain a top concern for landscape management projects, especially in areas that are difficult to water. The revolutionary MP Rotator from Hunter Industries offers flexibility of design and features a unique, multi-trajectory rotating stream delivery system that achieves water-conserving results in any landscape. Rather than simply “spraying” water onto landscapes, the MP Rotator delivers multiple streams of water at a slower rate that soils can absorb, significantly reducing runoff. This application rate allows even distribution and up to 30% less water use when compared to traditional sprays. Complementing the water-saving features of the MP Rotator is Hunter’s new Root Zone Watering System (RZWS). The RZWS features Hunter’s patented StrataRoot™ design, a series of internal baffles that direct water, oxygen, and nutrients directly to the root zone while providing rigidity to the irrigation cylinder for added durability. The RZWS comes pre-assembled for easy installation, and the enclosed design and grate protect irrigation hardware from vandalism. For efficient, water-saving landscape irrigation and healthy trees and shrubs in any environment, choose the Hunter RZWS and the MP Rotator as the optimal solution. Green Garden Paving

PorcelPave are excited to be bringing the innovative new PorcelQuick system to the LANDSCAPE Show for 2017. Fixing external porcelain tiles can be both time consuming and costly, but with PorcelQuick you can expect to see a reduction in materials of up to 80%. This is a huge advantage when fixing patios for terraced houses where access can be an issue. The benefits of the PorcelQuick Adped System means that there is up to 80% reduction in materials & cost and areduced risk of back ache or injury. It provides shortened installation times, high load bearing strength and it resists structural movement. It will reduce carbon footprint by up to 80% and is guaranteed for 25 years. Porcelain tiles require a solid base to avoid lipping which means a substantial amount of materials are needed, as well as time to let the base dry. With the PorcelQuick system a series of pedestals are created using a mix of sharp sand and cement, which can be tiled as soon as they are hardened. The finished patio can also be grouted, using Grout Backer Rod to support the grout during application and curing. Stainless steel external trims are also available to finish the patio without the need for profiling. Visit the PorcelPave stand at LANDSCAPE 2017 this September in Battersea Park for more information on the PorcelQuick system.

London College of Garden Design London College of Garden Design (LCGD) Graduates have triumphed once again at two of the big summer shows. At RHS Tatton Park Flower Show Lara Behr has won a Gold medal and the Best Back-to-back garden with her Macmillan Legacy Garden, a place of reflection, inspired by the work of the charity and all those involved in continuing their work. The garden referenced the charity’s founder and the work made possible by legacy donations. Lara has said ‘This has been a huge boost to my career so far and has allowed me to build upon the success I have had to date since leaving LCGD.’ Will Williams won a Silver Gilt Medal at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for ‘Streetscape’s Holding Back the Flood’ a striking representation of the actions of Pickering to reduce any recurrence of recent flooding where trees have been planted to slow water run-off after heavy rainfall. Will said “I’ve had a huge reaction to the garden with people interested in what they can do to help by planting trees, especially Alders, alongside water courses. I’m delighted by the response. Tom Massey also won a Silver Gilt medal at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for the Perennial Sanctuary Garden with spiral paths through colourful planting combinations that led to a calm central space away from the outside world. Many of the College’s tutors take part in the main flower shows with James Basson, Kate Gould, Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Andrew Wilson all winning Gold Medals in 2017. Ebb and Flow Ltd For a recent project that Ebb and Flow worked on, their client had an idea to bring a little of the outside into the inside of a play barn. So they created tiers of trays to hang from the roof, with lines of raindrops which children can walk between on stopping stones below. The intention of the whole visitor centre (Williams Den near Hull) is reconnection with nature, so they wanted to make the rain interactive. By chance they found that waves in the trays created swaying in the raindrops in a wonderful way. With the help of ingenious fabrications they have wave generating flaps operated by levers and cables. As far as they know there is nowhere else where one can play with freefalling rain. This could make weather forecasting even more difficult for the Hull area‌ At Ebb and Flow they would be happy to make playful rain in other arid regions, inside or outside. If you know of one please get in touch. Come and talk to Simon on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Boot & Dart Nurseries B.V Working with their local government partners across the Netherlands, over the last few years B&C’s R&D department have bred, selected, introduced and trialed a range of perennials for mass planting, ideal for use on low maintenance amenity planting. Boot & Dart. offer an extensive range of perennials in both a square 9cm or 1 litre size pot. Fleur Robust planting is highly cost effective with the P9 plants typically costing around 10pounds per m2 plus minimal aftercare. HARROD HORTICULTURAL One of Harrod Horticultural’s areas of specialist expertise is a water feature design – they understand the science and behaviour of water, what pumps and valves to use along with water chemistry – including filtration, chemical treatment and corrosive interaction. This recent project for James Basson - Scape Design down in Provence showcases their ability to turn a concept into a fully realised, reliable and low maintenance feature. They were initially approached with a vision for a feature inspired by the historic maze-like network of irrigation canals in the area, scaled for this courtyard location. Taking this outline concept they were able to supply a full set of 3D CAD models which were essential for visualisation and communication to all involved - including clients, their in house fabrication team, designer, installation team and maintenance contractor. Hydraulic circuits were designed with consideration of flow rates along with practical considerations such as maintenance, drain down, ease of installation, levelling, debris, leaf foundation were all included in the design process. A failure mode and effects analysis was carried out as routine to identify any potential catastrophic failure modes and physical models were built to test assumptions about water flow rates and gain clients approval before manufacture. The troughs were manufactured from 8mm steel, laser cut, folded then welded. Much skill is required to prevent such large sections of steel bowing or distorting during welding. The project was delivered on time and on budget. If you want to ask them more about their projects come and see them at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Ebben Nurseries Landscape architects, urban planners, green contractors, arborists, students and other green specialists can find a huge amount of information about trees and their applications in an extensive tree tool: the TreeEbb. The digital tree platform has been developed by Ebben Nurseries and allows you to find the right tree quickly and easily for every green project based on specific wishes. The TreeEbb is a digital search tool for thousands of characteristic plant species; crucial for planting the right tree in the right location and creating as well as, maintaining the desired final look. TreeEbb users can select not just on species but also on various characteristics, these include location, shape, a certain seasonal colour or geographic location, in connection with winter hardiness. The tool adjusts the search results to the selected requirements and whenever an extra characteristic is added, the range becomes more specific. On the extensive tree pages, the user can find detailed information and inspiring photos for each species. The information is arranged clearly by type, application, location, characteristics and plant properties. The TreeEbb is different to all other online tree-finding tools as it gives the exact width for each tree, a crucial piece of information for green designs, as in a street the width of the tree is more important than the height and winter hardiness zones and pH values are also indicated with exact figures. To find out how Ebben Nurseries could benefit you and your company, come visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

Round Wood of Mayfield Despite the current economic climate, Round Wood of Mayfield have been able to actually reduce the cost of their Chippy oak framed garage kits by 10% given the efficiency savings they have recently achieved. In fact the traditional CH2G (two-bay with gable roofline) model has been reduced even further - so is now available for just £3,295 plus VAT. Despite facing the double blow of a falling pound and rising raw material costs they have been able to offset these impacts by analysing and developing their manufacturing techniques. This year long process has required significant investment - particularly in machinery - but has proved more than worthwhile given the savings they are now able to pass on, with oak framed garage kits now available from just £2,395.00. The range of ‘Chippy’ kits comprises 47 standard designs, from 1 to 4 bays, in a variety of roof profiles. Additional options of half-bays, log stores and side aisles. Kit frames appeal to many customers as they are pre-designed, represent excellent value and are typically available on shorter lead times. They even keep some of their frames in stock. A further advantage of Chippy kits is their possible exemption from planning requirements and building regulations providing certain criteria are met. 1-Bays from £2,395, 2-Bays from £3,295, 3-Bays from £5,285, 4-Bays from £7,085. Stark & Greensmith At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Stark & Greensmith had the pleasure of working with Alitex on their prominent trade stand on Main Avenue. They said it is an inspiring and uplifting place to be, full of such creativity and good old fashioned hard work! They had a fantastic week there and came away with a few new ideas. If you visited them at RHS Chatsworth, where once again they were teamed up with Alitex on their beautiful stand, then you were part of history as visitors to the first ever RHS show there, it might have been slightly different weather to London, but in true British style they were enjoying every second of it. Stark & Greensmith are still overwhelmed by the response that they received as part of Charlie Bloom’s “Colour Box” show garden. Charlie created such a positive and happy garden, bursting with colour and character. A stunning simple idea, which really stood out in the company of other conceptualised show gardens. It was truly a garden that you could snap with your camera and recreate at home. This approach is one reflected by Stark & Greensmith – they created a laser cut panel range to be something creative, design focused, beautiful and most importantly achievable for real people to have in their own gardens, to be able to feel that they too could have a piece of show garden in their own homes. Come visit them and learn more about their designs at the LANDSCAPE show in September in Battersea Park.

Chartered Institute of Horticulture The Young Horticulturist of the Year competition prize is a £2500 travel bursary, so let’s give young horticulturists the chance to go on a trip of a lifetime! It’s becoming more important than ever to encourage young people into the horticultural industry, and since 1990 we have been running the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition annually to do just that. Attracting over 2,500 applicants this year the competition came to an exciting end in May 6th at University Centre Shrewsbury where the final 8 competitors fought for the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world with a £2,500 bursary. Previous winners have visited Africa, the Galapagos, Madeira and New Zealand to name a few. The bursary is provided in honour of Percy Thrower, Britain’s first celebrity gardener, known for his work with the BBC on Gardener’s world and Blue Peter. After successfully completing a plant identification round and answering over 10 rounds of questions Lachlan Rae came out on top. He now has the opportunity to plan how he will spend his £2,500 during his extended visit to Australia and possibly Tasmania. We asked Lachlan what advice he would give someone looking to enter the competition “I think the best piece of advice I could give someone considering entering the YHOY competition is to persist and accept any failures in a positive light. I won the competition on my fourth year of entry, making the final three times. Having experience of how the competition works helped me to develop my knowledge and overcome the nerves associated with competing. When soil or any type of fill is placed over an existing root system, it causes a reduction in the oxygen supply to the tree roots and slows down the rate of gas exchange between the roots and the air in the soil pore space. By installing the Retaining Protector around the circumference of the trunk, it allowed levels to be raised without compromising the life longevity of a healthy tree. Additional design features included an external joining plate to give additional strength and multiple connection points, 16mm x 150mm stainless steel studs around the perimeter of the base to aid the concrete footing to key to the Retaining Tree Protector. Perforated Plastic Pipe was installed by the landscape contractor under the root bed for additional drainage and oxygen source. Urban Street Designs is a specialist UK manufacturer of steel street furniture. They have over 35 years of engineering skills and expertise and have been providing a first class service within the industry since 1985. Their customers include architects, construction companies and local government to name but a few. Providing a concept to reality service, all their products are manufactured on site in the UK. Venus Stone The Venus team are delighted to be able to showcase one of their newest and unique imports, Raj Green Sawn and Honed paving. The honed treatment of the Raj Green Indian Sandstone brings a luxurious finish to an otherwise traditional looking paving stone, leaving a smooth, crisp surface that twinkles in sunlight, revealing a compelling variety of tones. The rustic heritage of the classic Raj paving combined with this contemporary finish provides a truly unique paving option, with a Mediterranean style glow. Due to the extensive amount of contacts built up over the past 20 years in the importing business, Venus Stone are proud to be one of the only stone merchants offering this paving at such a reasonable price. Utilised here to create an innovative water feature, demonstrating just how versatile this luxurious stone can be, Raj Green Sawn and Honed will look equally stunning when laid as regular paving. At a time when landscaping is increasingly leaning more towards the contemporary side as premium stone becomes more affordable, honed paving stone is becoming an essential addition to any modern patio or garden. With an engaging and cultured colouring to boot, Raj Green offers more than just modernity, it offers character. Arboricultural Association The move inside the gates of Westonbirt Arboretum, meant that this years’ Arb Show had a huge range of activities and a record number of exhibitors and visitors, all of which combined to make it the most successful ARB Show its’ 19 year history. The new and improved showground enabled more space for exhibitors with more large kit stands on display than ever before. In total a diverse range of 109 organisations presented their wares; from books to wood chippers and climbing kit to tree surveying equipment. 6,834 people attended during the 2 days and despite a couple of torrential downpours, dedicated arborists arrived in scores throughout Friday 12th May. Providing the bar for the first time, Stroud Brewery were busy; even during a heavy shower there was a long queue for a pint of ‘Stump Grinder’, the official Arb Show Ale. The tills of many kit suppliers in attendance were constantly busy, some having to travel back to their headquarters on Friday evening to replenish stock for the final day. Taking center stage at the heart of the showground, and showcasing just some of the many technical skills involved in being a professional arborist, was the Tree Climbing Competition. Nearly 50 climbers took part across 3 skill categories in a hard-fought competition, which drew in the crowds and had many in awe of their daring efforts high in the canopy of Westonbirt’s magnificent cedars. Perennial The Perennial Sanctuary Garden at the recent RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show was designed to raise awareness of the UK’s only charity dedicated to looking after all horticulturists in times of need. Designed by Tom Massey, the garden was awarded an RHS Silver Gilt Medal and received a fantastic response from visitors and the media. It was one of the few gardens at the show that visitors were able to walk through and tens of thousands of visitors experienced the garden up close. The garden took a spiral form with a changing colour palette of plants to symbolically represent the journey a Perennial client makes as they overcome difficulty with Perennial’s help. Garden designer Tom Massey, who will be speaking at the New Starters Conference at the LANDSCAPE show hosted by Perennial, comments: “Perennial makes a huge difference to thousands of horticulturists every year. The garden at Hampton provided a fantastic opportunity to show everyone in the industry that if they are going through tough times, help is available. Visitors especially liked the fact they could walk through and engage with the garden, and hopefully that will mean its message has left a lasting impression.” The garden showcased some of the best in horticulture, bringing together a range of partners including multiple gold medals winning contractor Landform Consultants, as well as top British suppliers including nursery Hortus Loci and stone paving specialists London Stone. Playbark.com Play Bark have a rubber bonded mulch which is available in a delightful range of colours and they cover the entire UK with their installation services. The rubber bonded mulch is ideal for schools, nurseries, special needs environments, parks and domestic situations, their surfaces will provide a cost effective and low maintenance solution to areas which require soft but resilient fall protection. To ensure their rubber bonded mulch performs perfectly and provides great longevity, they are also able to install the sub base for all projects. Recently their services were employed by Barford, Sherbourne & Wasperton Joint Parish Council to rectify a problem they had at the village green play area adjacent to the village convenience store. The area enjoyed functional play equipment but unfortunately the surface which consisted of rubber mats secured on top of soil had become very muddy and were leaving the children dirty after playing. The solution was to excavate the soil and remove from site, to install a sub base consisting of MOT Type 1 and thereafter to apply Play Bark’s ‘Bonded Rubber Mulch’ to a depth of 40mm which boasts a ‘critical fall height’ of 1.7 metres! The customer chose a delightful mix of green and brown which was complimented by the semi-rural location. The area was 165 square metres and was completed over 4 days. Their team managed the project from start to finish (dodging the rainfall!!) and the transformation was incredible. Come and see samples from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Norfolk Olive Tree Company On the back of exhibiting at RHS Cardiff Show, the Norfolk Olive Tree Company were recently featured in the Weekend Telegraph. They sent their photographer Andrew Crowley to Norwich to take their portrait. Whilst arranging their trees and themselves to showcase their beautiful specimens - they had no idea they would use the picture for the front cover of the gardening section. Customers and friends now refer to them as ‘The Pin-ups ‘ of the gardening world. At RHS Cardiff Show their exhibit ‘Live your Mediterranean dream ‘ was awarded silver and with just two years under their belt they were more than happy with the result. With solid feedback from the judges they hope to get gold next time. Feedback is the food of champions they say! They spoke to so many people at Cardiff with olive trees already in their gardens but with no knowledge on how to care for them. This inspired them and they have now formulated a slow release Olive Feed. Their feed is a blend of seaweed, guano and Epsom salts. It’s ideal as a soil conditioner, is excellent at developing strong roots and improving strength and vigour and is now available to buy online. Come and talk to them on their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show in September in Battersea Park.

Long Rake Spar Decorative aggregate supplier Long Rake Spar is celebrating a major milestone in its history as it reaches its 150th anniversary. Set in the heart of the Peak District, the company has evolved from a local mine to one of the country’s leading suppliers of decorative aggregates and landscaping stone. Originally founded in 1867 near the village of Youlgreave, the Long Rake Spar Co. was chiefly concerned with extracting and distributing the area’s famed ‘Derbyshire Spar’. The mineral, well known for its bright white, sparkling appearance was popularly used in Victorian gardens and landscapes. By the 1920s there were 15 miners working tirelessly at the site to extract over 12,000 tonnes of Spar each year and supplied to landscapers and home owners across the British Isles. However the prosperity of the Long Rake Spar Mining Co. was not to last and by the 1970s the company had reached the end of the Spar vein, meaning the business had to diversify. The surface works were already processing aggregates from other Derbyshire quarries but expansion was on the horizon as T&T Broadhurst acquired the Long Rake Spar Co. Ltd in 1985. Through a combination of determination and entrepreneurial thinking, the company thrived, increasing its product offering to include a range of imported materials alongside its UK sourced products. The introduction of the Platinum Range offered landscapers and contractors access to stone that had not previously been available to the UK landscaping market. The unique colouring of products like Flamingo, Onyx and Black Ice meant that builders and landscapers could expand their design options, offering homeowners a wider selection of choices, supplied exclusively by Long Rake Spar. As it celebrates its 150th anniversary Long Rake Spar continues to look to the future with further expansion and an increase in stockholding to provide efficient delivery and competitive pricing to customers. Biomatrix Water Solutions Ltd

Modular floating gardens open up a whole new range of possibilities for water feature design. Biomatrix Water is an ecological technology company that has developed and applied this technology in a wide range of projects worldwide. The modules are produced in their workshop and assembled, installed and planted on site. As they come in differently shaped components and each can be combined, almost any island shape is possible. The islands can be free floating, form archipelagos or can be anchored to the water’s edge to form a green floating riverbank. In this way, wildlife habitat and green space can be created in former lifeless, concrete-lined water features. The aquatic plants that cover the floating islands play an active role in managing and improving the water quality through the microorganisms in their roots. They have also developed a dynamic biofilter media; columns of root-like material hanging underneath the islands that greatly increase the habitat for microorganisms. In this way, their floating islands effectively tackle pollution and algae. Severely polluted water can be treated using their Active Island Reactor system, a floating water treatment system which provides enhanced natural processes to improve water quality. Biomatrix have worked with clients in a wide range of urban settings to provide effective solutions to challenges of water pollution and habitat degradation that areas around the world are faced with today. The team at Biomatrix Water enjoy engaging with diverse challenges, and are passionate about providing solutions that bring water to life. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Thrive Notcutts, the family owned garden centre company, is funding a second bursary scheme at garden therapy charity Thrive. Ten students have already successfully completed their training in social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) at Thrive thanks to a bursary created last year in the name of the late Charles Notcutt OBE. The Charles Notcutt Memorial Bursary was launched in January 2015 to enable five students to complete Thrive’s Award in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH). More than 50 people applied and Thrive shortlisted ten excellent candidates – in light of that Notcutts agreed to fund all ten places. Thrive is one of the UK’s leading authority on using STH and training people in the profession. Social and therapeutic horticulture is a process where horticultural therapists use the garden and the garden environment to build a set of tasks for the people they help; those living with disabilities or ill health, or people who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. STH is a proven therapy which comes under the wider umbrella of green care and is now, more than ever, being widely used to help people. Thrive helps hundreds of people each year at one of its three regional centers, or in the community, and the charity plays an important role in training people from a range of backgrounds, including health, social care and horticulture, or people who are looking for a new career. Thrive’s Training Team run courses across the country, ranging from taster days in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture to a Professional Development Diploma in conjunction with Coventry University. The Gardeners Guild ‘What can experienced gardeners do when they want to reduce the amount of physical labour they offer?’ Many consider leaving the industry. Others consider design. Design is a form of consultancy. There are many other areas of consultancy in horticulture. Gardeners can now apply to be Consultant Members of The Gardeners Guild. This is not designed to be a higher level of member - many members who could be consultants will choose not to be. Their priority at The Gardeners Guild is still Garden Maintenance. Instead, the addition of Consultant membership is designed to help distinguish ‘consultancy’ from ‘advice’ and give members confidence to offer standalone consultancy services. It also gives members another option when they want to reduce the amount of manual labour they offer. The entry criteria is strict and at The Gardeners Guild they are not pursuing a high number of applicants. Their priority is simply to provide this option for members who want it or who want to work towards it in the future. It was also a logical step, other affinity groups (Arboricultural Association) have Contracting members and Consultant members - why should gardeners be any different? Come and talk to them about the possibilities at their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

ECOPROTEC ECOPROTEC, the new water based brand of internal and external stone and paving sealers from UK manufacturer LTP has gone from strength to strength since its launch 2 years ago. With over 30 years of experience in the tile and stone market LTP are already one of the biggest retail brands in the UK and during a three year research and development project the company sourced and tested the most advanced water based ingredients to produce the ECOPROTEC range of sealers and cleaners, which are all on display at the LANDSCAPE Show. Projects have included both interior and exterior stone surfaces at the Bovey Castle Hotel, large sections of the interior of the National Gallery of Ireland including the Portland stone staircases. Interior flagstones and external block paved areas at Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford. Most recently ECOPROTEC has been used externally by Liverpool FC at the Anfield grounds to help protect and seal hundreds of engraved granite tributes used to pave the walkways of the gardens. There is now a noticeable trend for using a variety of stones and designs for exterior use and this provides unique sealing and cleaning challenges especially when the stone chosen is also used internally as well. With interest in the ECOPROTEC products ranging from Budleigh Salterton and Bucharest to Beijing, LTP are preparing for a significant increase in production in 2017/18 including two new products which will be launched at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park. Come along and see them on their stand.
