Landscape THE INDUSTRY TRADE SHOW
As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
YOU CAN GAIN UP TO 11 POINTS AT LANDSCAPE SHOW!
CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance. LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 18th of September 2018, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online nearer the time of the show at www.landscapeshow.co.uk. On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.”
Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend. Register for your FREE tickets to attend by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk
AIPH
WOODEN GARDEN OBELISK Founders and Directors of The Wooden Garden Obelisk Company, Colin and Kay Thompson are very much looking forward to exhibiting a select range of their innovative products at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show. At LANDSCAPE 2018, The Wooden Garden Obelisk Company will also be featuring a focal piece from their stunning Large Obelisk range. This range along with their standard obelisks are intricately crafted in a beautiful long lasting Accoya timber, created mainly for the larger garden to create both a standout point and impact in a larger space. The Large Obelisk was gorgeously crafted with several details. For example it has a unique double cap giving an extra point of interest and character on the Obelisk. They come in two standard sizes within the range, however The Wooden Garden Obelisk Company also offer these as well as all their other product offerings in bespoke sizes to allow their clients to achieve the perfect size and style for their garden. The Wooden Garden Obelisk Company has received great reception to their Large Obelisks particularly within the commercial market. For example, recently their Large Obelisks were placed at the Belfry Hotel in Warwickshire as well as within Highclere Castle in Berkshire. To find out how The Wooden Garden Obelisk Company can support you on your next project, be sure to visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park. You can see their amazing products on display and also can speak to a member of their team.
Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our world for the future and we are happy to be supporting the event for another year.

APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) accredits landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK against a strict inspection process on an annual basis. This ensures that we can promote our members to the public knowing they will offer a professional service to the best of our ability. The rigorous inspection process to join is one of the toughest within the industry. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. With garden designers, landscape architects and contractors all visiting The LANDSCAPE Show, the APL believe it is an important event in the landscaping calendar to support and take part in. Networking with industry peers is a great way to share information and promote the benefits of APL membership, so it would be foolish to miss out!

ADRIAN GRAY Monumental stonebalancing sculptures by their very nature are awe inspiring and visually exciting. To see colossal boulders in balanced equilibrium can play havoc with one’s reasoning and that of course is the objective. The shape of the rocks is crucial so Adrian spends a great deal of time sourcing his stones. Granite boulders are one of his main materials to use, being beautifully sculptural with the strength and unusual forms that Adrian looks for to create a mind boggling composition. The granite boulders are shaped and fractured by ice during the last great glaciation 24,000 years ago. The flow and plucking of the ice carried many great boulders along and these ground out the valleys and sculpted the great hilltop tors of Bodmin moor. When the ice eventually melts a considerable litter of exposed granite blocks are left on the higher ground to gradually weather down over the millennia. After which, rain will slowly soften and round the exposed surfaces to produce beautiful and unusually curvaceous shapes that make the perfect materials for Adrian’s sculptures. Adrian’s recent purchase of a 14 tonne crane means the balancing process has been vastly simplified and once the rocks have been balanced and a film is made as evidence, the stones are fixed for safety and longevity. To find out more about Adrian Gray Sculptures, be sure to visit his stand at the LANDSCAPE Show and speak to him about his incredible creations this September in Battersea Park!

NEACO LANDSCAPE Show visitors seeking a maintenance-free decking solution are advised to head for stand E47, where Neaco are showcasing a range of grille flooring which offers outstanding durability and lasting visual appeal. Neaco manufacture their systems from aluminium which is corrosive-free and has a design life up to 120 years, providing far greater longevity than wood-based decking. Aluminium retains its colour extremely well, unlike other materials which become bleached with extended exposure to sunlight and it also scores exceptionally high for fire resistance; the metal is A1 Fire Rated and fully compliant with Class 0 of approved document B ‘Fire Safety’. Neaco decking features a patented swage-locked construction between bars which enables high structural efficiency and high load-bearing capability. The choice of grille profiles provides a surface contact area ranging from 10/6% to 100%. One of these profiles is Neaco’s innovative Neatdek 188 footwear, including stilettos. Neatdek 188 is ideal for a wide range of landscaping projects, including public spaces where pedestrian safety is a vital consideration. The decking is precision engineered to provide anti-slip surfaces which can be further enhanced with a serrated option. Neaco’s advanced manufacturing facilities also allow them to incorporate special elements such as bespoke holes cut into the panels to accommodate existing garden features such as trees. The modular decking panels are lightweight (1/3 of the weight of steel) and enable fast installation without requiring welding or other hot works. To find out more about how Neaco can support your next project visit their stand C27 at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park!

BALI Founded in 1972, The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) is the UK’s leading Trade Association for landscaping professionals; promoting, supporting and inspiring over 900 fully Registered organisations and individuals, including Contractors, Designers and Affiliate members.
VECTORWORKS Futurity is a Landscape Architecture based in Chicago, Illinois within the US that designs creative landscapes for residential, corporate and civic clients. Anna Arbetter, Chartered Landscape Architect at Futurity, shared how the firm contends with challenges in their already complex workflow and how she recently found success using Vectorworks’ built-in algorithmic modelling tool, Marionette, to streamline the design process. Arbetter explained “we were able to use three sequential Marionette scripts that did a number of important things. The first script would review ‘dumb’ survey data (circles and text boxes) to associate a text box containing a pre-assigned tree ID number with a generic tree symbol.” The second script places an Exisiting Tree symbol at the centre of each generic tree circle and automatically applies the pre-assigned tree ID number. The additional worksheet data gathered by the third Marionette script is automatically sent to the Object Info palette in Vectorworks, removing the need to type this information over and over again or copy and paste by hand.
Working across over 50+ disciplines, including hard and soft landscaping, irrigation, playground installation, green roof, living walls and design facility, BALI members are vetted against the highest standards of excellence. BALI members have been transforming domestic and commercial landscapes for over 45 years, deploying the very best skills and the latest products and materials to deliver projects that not only renovate spaces but also inspire future generations to enjoy the rich and diverse landscapes around them. BALI is delighted to be returning to LANDSCAPE 2018 on Stand A21 and are happy to continue supporting the event this year. BALI’s Marketing and Communications Manager Darren Taylor alongside Sales Officer Carly Button are looking forward to meeting and supporting BALI’s Registered Affiliate members who will be exhibiting.
With this successful experience, Arbetter can turn to Marionette in the future to customise Vectorworks in a way that will optimise her work – a benefit she previously didn’t realise could be possible for landscape architects. To find out more about Vectorworks and their Marionette service, visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park!

PLATIPUS ANCHORS BBC1’s Countryfile 30th Anniversary Garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2018 was designed by award winning Garden Design Ann-Marie Powell to celebrate one of Britain’s best loved and most watched TV programmes. The tiered landscape represented different areas of the British Isles, from Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire dales and moors to woodlands in North Wales, streams, rivers and coastal areas of the south and Ireland. Each area has its own characteristics with unique stone, plants, trees and wildlife habitat. The Scots Pine was anchored using the Platipus Deadman Fixing System with Plati-Mat which was used to give the large tree the support and stability that was required for a prestigious show garden visited by many RHS members and public alike. Since being founded in 1982, Platipus Anchors have become renowned as the market-leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of mechanical earth anchoring products after earning the reputation of providing some of the most cost-effective, innovative and easily-installed anchoring solutions to a wide range of industries throughout the world. To find out more and how Platipus Anchors can support you on your next project, visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park where you can see their products on display and speak to a member of their team.

We also support Grow Careers, an initiative set up to help bring young horticulturists into the industry by helping them explore the options available to them. Our mission is to both increase the number of new entrants into the sector, and inform progression and diversification of careers within the industry. We will be returning to the LANDSCAPE Show this year to take advantage of the networking opportunities with other organisations. THE GARDENERS GUILD LLP THE CLEFT WOOD COMPANY We caught up with Alex from The Cleft Wood Company this month on his experience within the industry and he said; “One of the pleasures of this job is to go into the woods and select the timber that is going to transform into our cleft oak fencing. We are lucky enough to have some excellent woodland managers who understand our quite specific needs; oak that is straight, relatively knot free and untwisted, that’s rather more uncommon than you might think.” The Cleft Wood Company uses traditional hand tools to split down their products. With regards to traditional hand tools, first wedges are used, then the froe and then trimmed up with a side axe. He goes on to describe a key estate The Cleft Wood Company purchases from. Based in Hampshire, near Basingstoke where there are hundreds of acres of well managed woodland as well as parkland, pasture and arable. The beautiful woods are accessed through a network of little lanes which are thinned on a regular basis, where a proportion of secondary trees are taken out to allow space for the best to grow on.
The Gardeners Guild is a national trade network for professionally qualified gardeners. With over 570 active, qualified members we have grown to become one of the largest paid member groups in professional horticulture since we started over 10 years ago. The Gardeners Guild is pleased to exhibit at LANDSCAPE Show for the 5th consecutive year. We encourage our members to attend this trade show as part of their continual professional development. It will help them keep up-to-date with industry trends and new developments. It is also a great venue for us to meet our members and for our members to meet each other. Gardening is hard work; Battersea Park is a great venue for a well-earned day off from normal activities to attend the trade exhibition for our industry. Professionals will benefit from the ever increasing range of industry speakers and have a unique opportunity to network. It is not unusual for our members to be on first name terms with the CEO of large suppliers as a result of meeting them at Landscape. As well as speakers and exhibitors, visitors will benefit from networking with other professionals they meet. We look forward to seeing all the familiar faces of our industry colleagues at LANDSCAPE 2018! We will also be happy to talk to anyone who is considering garden maintenance as their career.
Alex then exclaims “The guys who do the selecting and felling have a deep understanding of the country. They live locally and work locally. It’s brought up to our workshop by artic, twenty six tonnes at a time. Then all we have to do is break it down…” To find out more about The Cleft Wood Company visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park! @landscapeevent #Landscape2018 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

GARDEN MEDIA GUILD DUPONT Dupont is pleased to be sharing a stand with TCS Geotechnics at the LANDSCAPE Show this year. TCS are Dupont’s dedicated distribution partner for its range of high performance professional landscaping, weed and root control fabrics in UK & Ireland. The range includes weed suppressant fabrics Plantex Platinium and Plantext Gold and root barrier solutions Plantex RootProtector and Plantex RootBarrier. TCS are particularly excited about Dupont’s Plantex Platinium product which offers a water and air permeable solution to the problem posed by invasive weeds like Japanese Knotweed. Japanese Knotweed has long been an issue for landowners and occupiers of all types, given its aggressive and pervasive nature and the structural damage and ecological havoc that it can wreak. Recent high profile court cases involving Network Rail and neighbouring properties have reinforced just how important is it to keep this veracious species under control. Plantex Platinium delivers ecological solutions, without the need for toxic herbicides and its permeability to both water and air, provides some key advantages over impermeable membranes. The permeability encourages the maintenance of soil health and stability by facilitating normal microbial activity and the opportunity to lay Plantex Platinium horizontally, without creating issues of waterlogging and ponding, offers a range of, otherwise impractical, containment solution opportunities. TCS Geotechnics deliver throughout the UK & Ireland, everything from one roll of fabric upwards. To find out more about Dupont and TCS Geotechnics and how they can help you on your next project, visit their stand G19 at the LANDSCAPE Show this September!

POUF DADDY Pouf Daddy, designer and manufacturers of bean filled furniture and relative newcomers to the outdoor furniture market, have just completed a large order for a new Hylatt Hotel in Aqaba, Jordan. Their client specifically wanted a flexible solution to traditional poolside furniture for the beach club attached to their hotel. So Pouf Daddy sourced a solution of dyed acrylics from Barcelona based Agora fabrics with identical technical characteristics to brand leaders Sunbrella. They then used existing Pouf Daddy patterns as well as creating a new lounger as described by the client. The result was over 200 pieces of bean filled furniture including an ottoman design with a table top tray. HTA TREE AID TREE AID helps people in the drylands of Africa to lift themselves out of poverty and protect their environment. Genet Atabe is 39 and lives in Bongo, Ghana, three years ago she watched the banks of the river in her village crumle into the water and wahs away. In Genet’s village, increasing drought and hunger meant villagers cut down the trees by the river to sell as firewood and use the land to grow more food. When heavy rains came, the soil, parched by the sun and lack of vegetation, could no longer absorb the sheer volume of water. The river banks which previously held in place by a network of tree roots, started to crumble and wash away. The river course silted up, leaving less water available for the rest of the year. The harvest suffers and so the cycle of poverty deepened for Genet. TREE AID works with communities to prepare them for climate extremes, training them in how to sustainably manage their trees and generate income from them. Genet and others from her village worked with TREE AID to put trees back along the river banks and encourage regeneration of trees elsewhere. Three years later things are going well, “we have learned how to plant and care for trees and visited some communities that have already transformed their own river banks. The benefits will increase every year as the trees grow and our children will thank us.”

LINCOLNSHIRE POND PLANTS LTD Seed collection is underway for Lincolnshire Pond Plants’ next year plants and germination is taking place. Their new catalogue is now being designed and new plants are being added, with the steam heating some tropical vegetation to be grown. Further greenhouses are being covered to make space for all of the seedlings. Nissan huts are almost all covered ready for winter as they start thinking about plant development and care. Water lilies at this time of year offer immense colour to a pond, but also provide vital shade to prevent the build-up of blanket weed. The ranges of lily flowers vary from almost black to the purest white and many colours in between. Lincolnshire Pond Plants takes pride in growing plants that love to be in the water, at the edge of the water or just like to be in the area on damp ground. Their range of moist, damp ground, plants can help solve that awkward corner where very little grows. They are a family nursery and take great pride in providing a personal service. To find out more about how Lincolnshire Pond Pants Ltd can support your next project be sure to speak to someone at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park!
Our publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ gives guidance on implementing successful lighting within the public realm. It starts from one basic premise – that public space, is a crucial component of successful, well-functioning towns and cities in which people can work, relax and socialise in a harmonious manner. But at the same time, even the best-designed public squares, parks, pedestrian areas and gardens, which may be havens of sociability or serenity by day, can become unprepossessing, and even threatening, places after dark. One major aim of our guide is to inspire those responsible for commissioning and funding to recognise the numerous benefits of good landscape lighting and put such lighting at the centre of the design of new or refurbished urban spaces, parks and gardens.

LANDSCAPEPLUS The brand new Ortus Lights LED range is exclusively stocked by Landscapeplus and sits perfectly in the lighting spectrum between entry level fittings such as LightPro and the familiar brands of Hunza, Collingwood and LuxR. There are currently five different Ortus Light LED fittings to choose from including Spike Spots, Wall Lights and Pole Lights. Each fitting is beautifully finished in a choice of powder coated bronze or matt black and comes supplied with 5.3w warm-white LED lamp. But that’s only half the story because light fittings are nothing without the system that supplies them and this is where Landscapeplus has the advantage. Landscapeplus supplied its own fully potted, IP67 outdoor transformers which, if used with Landscapeplus’ EasyTee connectors, ensures a waterproof system that will work from day one and still be working years later. Alongside stocking a huge range of lighting favourites, Landscapeplus is also the main trade supplier of many other ranges including Davey, Bega, Boom and Astro as well as “built to order” suppliers such as Delta Light and iGuzzini. KATE GOULD KATE GOULD GARDENS
Kate along with her two project managers, Keith Chapman MBE and Colin Evans travelled to Singapore last July to begin building a show garden for the ‘Landscape Garden’ category at the Bi-annual Singapore Garden Festival. Kate teamed up with implementing partner ISS Hydro culture based in Singapore to bring her design to reality with hard and soft landscaping. Work began on the 10th July and judging took place on the 20th July.
The courtyard space was intended for the use of a community, living in surrounding apartment blocks. They can garden there in small numbers communally or on their own. Separate seating and lounging areas provide the residents with relaxing spaces, whilst one area, over a calm pool is covered by a lightweight pergola which shielded people using the garden from windows and balconies above, offering both privacy and shade.
Kate said “I am so pleased and overwhelmed at the chance given to be a part of the Singapore Garden Festival. We are extremely lucky to have worked with such an amazing group of people who have made our experience, especially in the extreme weather conditions, so pleasant and to help bring the garden to life in such a short period of time. This garden has to be credited to the ISS team who shared their vast knowledge of tropical plants as well as the hydro culture planting system.”
Be sure to come along to the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park to hear Kate’s Seminar Session on Planting Design!

WWOO WWOO are still reeling from their wonderful new project, with the WWOO outdoor kitchen taking front stage in their client’s beautiful country garden. The client wanted them to design a WWOO to incorporate their bespoke under floor heating system which pumps hot air up through the paving slabs to keep feet and legs warm during the cooler UK Spring / Summer evenings, enabling the WWOO kitchen and fireplace to be enjoyed for longer periods. WWOO created a product with extravagant features such as a six, two metre high and one point five metre wide WWOO wall sections in Anthracite (very dark grey) including a WWOO corten steel fireplace to enjoy year round. They also included a Jamie Oliver pizza oven, Everdure by Heston Blumethal BBQ and spit-roast, shelves below for storage and keeping wood dry and shelves above for herb pots, cookery books, utensils and an ideal spot for keeping glassware and wine bottles out for reach of little hands! They also included a one point three metre lower WWOO wall section with a shelf and WWOO hardwood storage box to complete the ‘L’ corner shape. WWOO and the client were extremely happy with the end result, as the kitchen was really eye-catching including the vibrant green trees as a backdrop and WWOO were sure it would be enjoyed for years to come! DEBBIE CARROLL STEP CHANGE DESIGN
This month we caught up with Debbie Carroll ahead of her talk at the LANDSCAPE show, who touched on the topic of whether we can afford to design gardens that won’t be used after the novelty has worn off. She says ‘Designers risk their reputations by creating gardens that are not used as much as their care sector clients expect them to be. A key factor that can lead to this situation is to simply focus on the outside space whilst ignoring the practices, processes, attitudes and values of the care setting as a whole. Understanding the actual care culture in operation is a vital
piece of information that should guide the designer’s overall brief in the same way as knowing other site analysis data gathered at the outset of the design process.’ Debbie continues ‘We have developed an approach to working with care settings called ‘Relationship-Centred Design’ that places greater emphasis on this aspect of the data gathering stage. The approach we promote is not on simply making the garden neat or pretty, nor believing that we have to redesign the whole space in one go. Instead we advocate
focusing on the identified needs of the residents and care setting whilst working with a clear understanding of the current care culture in operation. We need to draw on a wider range of skills than simply design in order to ensure that our involvement results in more active, well-loved and meaningful engagement outside for the residents, staff and families, wherever the care setting lies on the care culture spectrum, and that the investment made in our services and the outside space represents good value for money for the longer term.'

MOORE CONCRETE With over 80% of the UK’s population living in urban areas, removed from the wellbeing benefits of rural settings, there is an increased emphasis on developing green environments within the urban landscape. Taking the lead in developing this concept the University of Greenwich is holding the ABC Activating Biophilic Cities conference on the 4th and 5th of September to celebrate the 5th Biophilic Cities Day, which they state is ‘a day to celebrate how we incorporate nature into our urban environment’ they further comment ‘Today the ecosystem services that city vegetation delivers, through avenues, parks and gardens, urban forests, green roofs and living walls, are well known and largely celebrated. The necessity for clean air, natural light, sunlight, natural materials and plants are also a prerequisite for health and wellbeing outside our buildings as well as inside.’ ECOncrete’s Bio Active Living Walls provide a sustainable, no maintenance green solution that can be incorporated into new or existing buildings. The composition and texture of the Bio Active wall tiles create ecologically active infrastructure, which is specifically designed to induce rapid plant wall coverage. This significantly improves the aesthetics of construction whilst providing cleaner and healthier air and reducing the ecological footprint of urban development. To find out more about how Moore Concrete can support you upcoming projects, speak to a member of their team at their stand C71 in the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park.

CAROLYN WILLITTS CW STUDIO
Situated on Lake Windermere, the lakeside garden designed by CW Studio, slopes down past the existing timber jetty and boathouse and into the water. The owners were keen to retain the natural beauty of the existing site with its long grass and undulating slopes, sense of openness and space. The proposed new home sits within this natural setting facing the stunning views across the lake. The main terraces steps
down to a raised pool, flanked on one side with a stone path leading down to a second terrace by the boathouse. Slate seating steps extend out into the sloping grass and additional slate seats are half buried into the slope to create social spaces by the lakeside. A disciplined palette ensures the natural feeling of the existing site is retained and additional boulders are added to those already along the shoreline to create impromptu seating for lakeside gatherings.
The lawn is retained as long grass with spring bulbs and new areas of wildflowers were added. Existing woodland planting is enhanced with rich tapestry of ferns, spring flowering bulbs and herbaceous perennials. Permission for this project was granted in August 2017 and construction work starts later this year.
Carolyn Willitts, founder of CW Studio, is a Landscape Architect and Garden Designer who takes joy in creative collaboration and is passionate about creating thoughtful landscapes and celebrating outdoor places. She will be speaking as part of our inspiring PechaKucha sessions at the LANDSCAPE Show this September. @landscapeevent #Landscape2018 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

ANDREW WILSON WILSON MCWILLIAM STUDIO
This multi-award winning roof terrace by Andrew Wilson and Gavin McWilliam explored the idea of rooms in the exterior gardens spaces which in themselves are a surprise feature of this property given its location above the shops of Notting Hill. Each level of the garden has a different character due to the diverse levels of enclosure, light and shade. The lower levels are more enclosed and private, the upper levels light and with expansive views. They aimed to
expansive views. They aimed to create a feeling of hidden glamour with individual finishes, colour themes and subtle but interesting lighting effects. Planting is used a specimens to articulate a space or create a viewing focus. Elsewhere it is used to soften or to add colour and texture. At the highest level it is used a as a low groundcover, rich in nectar for feeding insects and butterflies in particular. Materials were selected for darker tones to
create mood or for bold highlights as focal points. Glass balustrade is used to minimise shadow or enclosure, and lighting brings the garden to life after dark with some dramatic set pieces. With the client’s interest at heart, the wanted to design a space in which found objects collected sculptural pieces or antiques could be displayed informally through the garden. They aimed to create a feeling of space but also privacy.

CAROLE ANDREWS Established sculptor Carole Andrews is best known for her creations for private clients within their gardens. Her client base includes many projects around the country and mainland Europe. Her favourite medium is aluminium that is teased and stitched into organic sculpture, then strengthened with resin and painted to render the two-three metre sculpture weatherproof. At LANDSCAPE 2018 Carole will be answering questions about all aspects of the commissioning
process. This month we caught up with Carole and she said 'working with private clients is full of surprised and always interesting. I had a local enquiry after a client has seen my work at an exhibition. She admired my rounded forms and commissioned a large abstract onion shaped piece with multiple layers, for her husband’s birthday. When it came to delivery time she wanted it wrapped and left outside the front door then I was to ring the doorbell and hide behind a hedge.
Her husband opened the door and looked a bit non-plussed at the strange parcel but he opened it up and looked even more non-pussed when both she and I jumped out with a loud ‘Surprise Surprise!’ My client spent quite some time explaining to her husband who this strange woman was and why he had a huge onion on the doorstep. He cheered up quickly though and we spent a glorious afternoon siting the sculpture in the garden and enjoying a celebratory glass of wine.”
Carole Andrews will be speaking as part of a panel discussion with Almuth Tebenhoff and Caroline Worthington on the topic of ‘Commissioning Art for Cities and Private Clients’. Come down to the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park to hear more!

ROBERT MYERS ROBERT MYERS ASSOCIATES
This month we caught up with Robert Myers from Robert Myers Associates who said: “I’m honoured – and, to be honest, a little terrified! – to have been asked to present a PechaKucha at this year’s Landscape Show, on the theme of ‘Things that make me go Wow!’ For the most part, my inspiration comes from quite tangible sources. Every site and every client is different, and each one provokes a specific creative response. I like nothing better than meeting a client for the first time, walking the ground which we will help to redesign, sketching out ideas and solutions to problems as we go. I get to meet so many interesting people, in a wide variety of locations. This is one reason that I never tire of my job!”
He goes on to explain “My experience designing medal-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens has allowed me to develop more experimental design ideas, and innovative uses of planting and materials. However, Robert Myers Associates is best known for the quality of our designs and our attention to detail. I’ve been lucky to work with many landscape professionals who are as dedicated to these principles as I am. It’s always exciting to watch my designs emerge from paper into three dimensions; in the hands of people I both trust and enjoy working with.”

EUROPLANTERS Europlanters were proud to have been asked to manufacture the large ‘S’ shaped bench made from Iroko timber and steel legs, that sat within the Laced with Hope artisan garden designed by Laura Anstiss for the Chelsea Flower Show. “It was an honour to have been involved with this project”, said John Wilkes of Europlanters. Laced with Hope told the story of a child’s journey following a diagnosis of cancer and the work the charity Supershoes does to empower that child in their fight. The use of art to frame the garden represented the way the charity used art on shoes to inspire sick children. Sculptures represented children and their families. The lace sculpture extended up, over and through the plants, binding all elements together and the bench provided a place for friends and support staff to sit and reflect. Europlanters supplied the bench in six sections, which when assembled the “S” shape was approximately 3.6 metres long. The seat itself is 400mm wide by 450mm high, with an external radius of one meter and was crafted using 96 blocks of Iroko timber and seven steel legs. This stand-alone bench is now part of the Europlanter range and can be adapted to fit different spaces. GENUS PLANT SOURCING Wholesale sources and suppliers of hardy plants for Garden Designers, Landscapers, Architects and Retail Nurseries, Genus Plant Sourcing have had numerous discussions in the Genus office about what information they want to convey to their existing and potential customers in their PREVIEW feature. Even Seb, the office dog, has been getting involved. Matt points out that it’s all about the customers, so they decided to canvas a few to find out why they came to them to source their plants. A few phone calls later and they’ve been told that it’s their reliability and good service that stand out. Their customers also liked the fact that they can call on their expert knowledge to help them with their plant choices. “They know what they are getting with us” pipes up Sue, a statement reiterated by their customers. RACHEL REYNOLDS REYNOLDS DESIGN
As a relative newcomer to the landscape industry, Rachel Reynolds is keenly aware how hard the first few years in practice can be. Life as a garden designer for Rachel begun two years ago when she graduated from London College of Garden Design (LCGD) and set up her practice Reynolds Design. Since then she has completed a variety of projects; a Memorial Garden of Dulwich College, a number of domestic gardens and is now working on the redesign of the wider campus back at Dulwich College.
Earlier this year her LCGD graduate entry to redesign Bernie Spain Gardens on the South bank was also shortlisted in a major design competition. So it has been a busy couple of years, but life in the big wide landscaper world can be a very steep learning curve for a newly qualified designer and Rachel remembers the first trade show she attended after she graduated was the LANDSCAPE Show and how the seminar programme was really valuable to her continued professional development. So when asked to
contribute to this year’s show she jumped at the opportunity to give a little back to the industry. Rachel will be taking part in two sessions. Firstly, a panel discussion about surviving those first years in practice and going on to establish a successful Design Practice and secondly she will be chewing the fat with Andrew Fisher Tomlin, focusing on the role of the narrative within garden design, what that means and whether it is always relevant.

HEDGES DIRECT Hedges Direct recently made a summer visit to their network of growing sites to review their stock for the upcoming bare root and root ball season. The trip allowed Hedges Direct to prepare for the rush that will come this Autumn by assessing the stock and making sure they are of the highest standard. With the extreme weather conditions creating concern, both here and in Europe, Hedges Direct now have the confidence that they are prepared for the upcoming season which is set to be chaotic with pre-orders already being made. The trip also gave the team a greater understanding of the processes that are in place to ensure a smooth journey from point of ordering to customer delivery. The grater insights allow Hedges Direct to inform their sales and service staff of current situations, creating a better service for their customers. The trip also made for a great photography opportunity for the team in which they can use to create exciting new content for their customers and give them a better insight into the products they are ordering. These trips are very beneficial to the team as they want to deliver the best possible service they can and having this contact with the stock allows Hedges Direct to do so. Come and have a chat with the team and find out more about their visit to their growing sites at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park!

PATRICIA FOX ARALIA
An average garden can take several years to fully develop after the initial build and install process. This means waiting for trees, hedging and shrubs to mature, leading to initially and unfinished look. Aralia has a wealth of experience in Instant Gardens. They are experienced in designing and installing high impact mature gardens for architects, developers and private clients. As a growing trend in Landscape Design and one that Aralia have practiced for years, Instant Gardens prevent the waiting for gardens to mature and
flourish. Growers can now provide fully mature specimens which can be placed straight into your garden or roof terrace for a more immediately finished look. One of Aralia’s more recent Instant Gardens, ‘Viburnum Gate’, and their clients wanted a garden to be completed in time to serve as a showstopping backdrop for their upcoming celebration party. Aralia worked closely with the clients to create the perfect design for them, creating a garden bursting with lush evergreen layers including sunken garden areas, green walls and
pleached-trees for screening. Features included a bespoke water feature, contemporary dining areas and a living wall. All these instant impact features were implemented into the garden complete alongside mature shrubbery, ensuring the garden was at its full impact for the party. Patricia Fox, founder of Aralia will be taking part in the LANDSCAPE Show’s PechaKucha session where she’ll be sharing her insights and experience as a well-established Landscape Architect.

GREEN GARDEN PAVING Designed to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living spaces, the Valverdi Indoor-Out range consists of coordinating 10mm internal and 20mm external porcelain tiles. Available in a range of colours, sizes and designs, Valverdi has become one of the top names in indoor-outdoor flooring. Portico is a particularly eye-catching range inspired by quarried Cumbrian slate with a rich grey-blue colour. The natural patterning combined with the large format sixe 1200x600mm, give these titles a contemporary and luxurious look. Advances in inkjet technology have allowed modern porcelain to replicate natural stone almost perfectly, meaning that homeowners get the look but with all the benefits of porcelain; frost proof, stain resistant, hard wearing and fade proof. The external tiles also have an anti-slip surface which makes them perfect for a range of uses including patios, terraces, swimming pool surrounds and steps. Slate is notorious for fading or changing colour over time, something that will not happen to Valverdi Portico porcelain. There’s also no need to seal them and they can be cleaned easily using a stiff broom or power washer. Visit stand A29 at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park to find out more about the Portico range and pick up Valverdi Indoor-Out brochure.

CED STONE GROUP The UK imports huge amounts of stone from China and India. The sheer scale of production and variety of stones available from the Far East makes these imports a more economical choice than European or British Stone. However, CED Stone Group knows their customers are becoming more conscious of creating landscapes sustainably, so they continue to source British stone products as alternatives to imported stones. So what quality British stones are available now? Caithness is a riven stone with dark grey and brown tones from the North of Scotland. There’s also a stunning new Green Schist from the West Coast of Scotland. Whinstone from Central Scotland is a popular material for kerbs and setts due to its dark colours and strength. Grampian Granite from the North East of Scotland is ideal for both commercial and domestic projects. England’s classic Yorkstone in all its formats is one of Britain’s most renowned natural stone resources. Delabole Slate, Cornish Granite, Monmouth Red Standstone, Cumbrian Slates, Purbeck Limestone are all great options from our own doorstep. Some projects require larger quantities of materials quickly which European stone is perfect for, however this may be problematic in the not-too-distant future. Whatever Brexit “deal” transpires, importing from the EU is likely to become more expensive with increased customs administration, exchange rates and delays at ports will all contributing to a rise in prices. Maybe now is the time to look again at the best of British? Visit the CED Stone Group at their stand in the LANDSCAPE Show this September at Battersea Park to learn more about British stone!

IAN DRUMMOND INDOOR GARDEN DESIGN
It wasn’t so long ago that event planting was the exclusive preserve of florists, but over the last few years all that has changed and now its big business. Indoor Garden Design transforms both interior and exterior spaces for a huge variety of social and corporate events each year, each one frequently more challenging and ambitious than the last. 2018 marks the tenth successive year that IGD has been tasked to
decorate the grounds for party goers at the annual fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. This year, the brief included the creation of a stunning 5m x 3m photo backdrop for the celebrity guests to use on both arrival and departure. Peonies, hydrangeas and roses in various hues of pink and lilac, chosen to harmonise with the colour theme, were mixed with
foliage and moss and finished with the logo of event sponsor Bvlgari. The installation occurred in soaring temperatures so it was imperative that everything was planned to the last detail in order for the planting to happen as quickly as possible, using plants of the finest quality to withstand the heat. The final challenge was to ensure the 1.5 tonne wall was mobile enough to be moved to the departure area at the end of the evening.
Ian Drummond from Indoor Garden Design will be speaking as part of a panel discussion within the LANDSCAPE Show CPD Accredited Seminar Programme on the topic of ‘The Space Between; Where Indoors Meets Outdoors’. Be sure to come along this September at Battersea Park to learn more!

HOOK UP SOLUTIONS Why use the Hooka Machine? Landscape projects are frequently faced with the problem of how to get the materials onto the site, once they have been dropped off at kerbside from your material’s supplier. The Hooka machine overcomes this problem by being just one metre wide and weighing only 1.7 tonne, which means it can transport your materials through a one metre gap to the heart of your site! Being tracked, it has very low ground pressure so keeps ground disturbance to a minimum. Materials are simply loaded onto the bed of the machine, so when transporting the load is locked into position making the machine totally stable to safety lift and shift into position. Offering incredible versatility, the machine can move bulk bags, pallets of brick, blocks, pizza oven, concrete fence posts, sculptures, fencing, root ball trees and many more! Then at the end of the job (or start) it can also be used to clear site getting the waste away to kerbside for collection, removing the need for tedious permits for skip hire. The Hooka machine will save you time, money and back ache and also offer a safe solution for moving landscaping materials. To find out more about how Hook Up Solutions and their Hooka Machine can support your next project visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park!

ANDREW FISHER TOMLIN LONDON COLLEGE OF GARDEN DESIGN
Over the past decade the planting of new public landscapes around the world has pushed boundaries of sustainability and community-based solutions. Yet over this same period planting design for gardens has generally become stuck in a constant repetition of the words structure, meadow and perennial. But young designers are bored with this. And they’re doing something about it by throwing out the celebrity designer shortcuts to planting design and trying new ideas that excite and experiment.
At LCGD they firmly believe that there are many different ways to a successful planting scheme and offer studies that explore different processes with different reasons for their use and their potential outcomes. They believe copying what a celebrity designer tells you are the top 100 plants means you’re dismissing every other reason for selection and risk creating a planting scheme that needs forever refreshing. Instead you need to investigate and increase your knowledge of the different process, tools and plants available to you.
At the LANDSCAPE Show this year, LCGD are hosting a panel of four designers; SGD Award-winning and LCGD Graduate Emily Erlam, Warnes McGarr & Co’s Michael McGarr and Robert Warnes as well as LCGD course leader to their own Planting Design Diploma, Andrew Fisher Tomlin. The panel will be discussing ‘How to Shake up Your Planting Design’ touching on new process, ideas for planting design and facing up to climate change.

RICHARD BARLEY KEW GARDENS
In May this year, the extraordinary Temperate House at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew was reopened after a five-year restoration programme. The Grade 1-listed Temperate House was built in two phases between 1859 and 1899 and remains the largest pre-20th Century conservatory in the world. Its purpose was to enable Kew to grow and display exotic plants that would not survive in London’s winter frosts. At around 190 metres from end to end, it is twice as large as the iconic Palm House at Kew.
During the project, every element of the building has been fully cleaned, restored or replaced from the top of its decorative urns (119 of them!) to the intricate metal and wood frames, the heating system and around 15,000 panes of glass.

The plants that were growing inside the Temperate House were removed in order to protect them and then many were re-propagated to ensure that we had more vigorous young stock for the replanting. Some of the rarest temperate species (some now

GREENFINGERS Greenfingers celebrates its 20-year anniversary in 2019, having been founded in 1999 by gardening journalist, Richard Jackson, who identified a need for therapeutic gardens in children’s hospices across the country. The charity’s ethos is to improve the lives of the children, families and carers at these hospices. There is a strong belief that time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment, whilst creating special memories. To date, 55 Greenfingers gardens have created with more in the pipeline for later this year and 2019. They include a sensory garden at Claire House Children’s Hospice (The Wirral), designed by Carolyn Willitt, an all-weather garden at Little Harbour Children’s Hospice (St Austell) which will be designed by Darren Hawkes and a woodland garden at Richard House Children’s Hospice (East London, designed by Andrew Fisher Tomlin, with more on waiting list. Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Greenfingers Charity said 'Our work is only possible thanks to all those who get involved. Whether it’s designing and building gardens. FUNdraising or donating gifts in kind or at cost, every penny raised and every penny saved really is helping to make a difference to thousands of children and their families.' ARTISANS OF DEVIZES As the breeze rustles through the tress outdoors, there is a tranquil feel to this countryside oasis. Commissioned by interior designers Gramlick Designs and architect Jonathan Rhind, Artisans of Devizes sourced and supplied terracotta tiles for the interior living space floors and hard wearing stone for the external areas. Working with Jonathan Rhind, they created a secret garden at the client’s residential home, with a bespoke stone fire pit, wall copings and flagstone patio. Their bespoke team visited the site and took digital templates for the fire pit, patio wall cappings and swimming pool copings. They used Buscot Etched limestone to design the fire pit and bespoke copings, because of its contemporary look and feel. The stone fire pit is the perfect spot for alfresco socialising, while the swimming pool and surrounding patio area offers a great place for relaxing. Artisans of Devizes used Buscot Tumbled and Etched flagstones in bespoke widths for the pool terraces, to work with the linear slot drains and complete the modern, sleek summer house look the client desired. For the walled garden, the client wanted to create a time-worn look. They supplied Hampledon Sandstone Riven flagstones, because of their rustic appeal. Indoors, their terracotta rectangle bricks were used in a herringbone pattern on the living space floors, while their white Aybury ceramic tiles were stacked in the bathroom to create that rustic Wiltshire cottage look. GAVIN MCWILLIAM MCWILLIAM STUDIO
This contemporary take on an Arts and Crafts garden is one of the most recent projects by Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson and certainly one of their more ambitious. The clients wanted to retain the Arts & Crafts character of the house extended into the wider garden. However, they also wanted a contemporary quality in the development of the garden with spaces to socialise, relax, entertain and play. The design concept was ‘hide and seek’, a play on the sense of
compartmentalisation common in the gardens of Arts & Crafts Movement. This sense of discovery and partial revelation was given a contemporary take by the use of screen walls and box Pleached hedge forms that created a sense of spatial structure without a sense of total enclosure. Dry limestone walls ran across the garden from East to West creating bold structural ribs defining a series of spaces or axial views. The walls were frequently broken to revealed secondary views through the garden or
perforated with narrow Cor-ten lined apertures to provide playful glimpses of other spaces. Alongside the main dining terrace simple pools fed from cascades through the brick retaining wall provides moments of reflection and gentle sound. To find out more about Gavin McWilliam of McWilliam Studio visit his Seminar Session alongside Andrew Wilson on the topic of ‘Perfect Imperfect’ where they’ll be sharing their industry experience with the audience of the LANDSCAPE Show.

KEBUR GARDEN MATERIALS Whilst hot weather this summer has been great for outdoor living, it has caused problems for many landscapers installing natural stone. With stone slabs warming during the day and retaining heat well into the evening, it can be difficult to get the required conditions for applying sealant. Application at the wrong temperatures commonly leads to lasting damage. In its first year, Kebur Garden Material’s pre-sealing service is already proving extremely popular and saving landscapers precious time by delivering stone pre-sealed and ready to install. Kebur pre-seals any stone including its own range of over 20 varieties of granite, limestone, sandstone and slate. Unlike many sealers, the deep-penetrating Dry-Treat sealants create a permanent bond, which repels water and oil and prevents growth of moss and algae. This can be a great solution for more porous stone like honed sandstone, and to avoid picture-framing in paving such as granite. As well as Dry-Treat Stain-Proof which gives lasting protection, Kebur can also seal with Intensifia, which protects and enhances the colour and character of the stone, making natural features more visible. Cliff Mosey, Business Partner at Kebur says, ‘our pre-seal service has really taken off this year and is proving a great option for those who prefer a natural product with a more durable finish and hassle-free sealing in any weather’.
