Young Hort YoungHort is a new initiative, set up in December 2013 by Jack Shilley using social media networks to springboard the idea into the public domain. Jack was inspired to start the group after one simple tweet stating that ‘there should be an event for young horticulturists to get together, network and meet industry leaders to help support the industry for future generations.’

Since then YoungHort has grown massively with 200 YoungHort members and a dedicated team of YoungHort ambassadors who are responsible for the promotion and running of all the YoungHort projects that are currently underway! The first YoungHort conference that was organised by the ambassadors was a huge success with great reviews, inspiration talks and speeches and great connections built for all the horticulturists (young or mature) attending.

See us at LANDSCAPE The Young Horts will meet again on Wednesday the 24th of September 2014 with a specially focused student day which has been specially arranged at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September. Meet Jack Shilley at the YoungHort seminar on Wednesday 24th September at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park. Register for free tickets to come along and listen at www.landscapeshow.co.uk

In a more manicured garden, a wildflower border can be a lovely juxtaposition to clipped hedges and perfect lawns. With the right seed mix you can provide a continual flowering season, the succession of bloom will extend from April to October and can be lengthened further with under planting of spring bulbs. This offers a great opportunity to get creative with colour and design. Wildflower turf will grow up to about 75cms so designed areas at the back of an existing manicured lawn look great set in drifts. Regularly mown paths through an area of the meadow allow access without disturbing the wildlife and a seating area immersed within wildflower would be perfect for a nature lover. Likewise, for new developments and council maintained areas, wildflower landscapes offer the perfect solution to adding biodiversity back into an area or managing a difficult to maintain plot. Landscapers need to be providing cost effective, biodiverse solutions to developers and Councils to encourage the use of sustainable landscaping particularly in urban areas. Please visit their stand within the BALI pavilion at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Wild Flower Turf

To include wildflowers within any planting scheme encourages biodiversity and a link to the surrounding green areas. A patch of wildflowers, big or small, will provide a natural habitat for birds, insects and animals to breed and feed. Whilst also offering a great deal of scope with design and an ever changing height and look throughout the year, a wildflower area is a beautiful, tranquil haven for urban and country dwellers alike.

Streetlife

It is also possible to opt for All Black, a durable material made of recycled agricultural plastic sheeting. The All Black beams are black throughout, which means that scratches are hardly noticeable. As the material has a matt appearance due to its beautiful surface texture, it does not look like plastic. Various curved All Black benches have been placed in Newport city centre. By playfully positioning the benches around existing trees and creating different configurations, attractive meeting points have been realised. All Black fits perfectly with the traditional preference for black street furniture in the UK. In coastal zones, due to periodic flooding landscape architects are often faced with limited options when deciding how to landscape an area attractively. All Black landscaping elements offer a solution to this problem as the material is extremely resistant to salt and moisture. On the coastline at Redcar, beautiful configurations have been installed with curving benches, topseats and picnic tables.

To make a streetscape more attractive, an area can be landscaped with shrubbery and trees to create an appealing recreational space. In Sunderland, the Streetlife Big Green Benches were applied to combine seating areas with greenery. The benches are fitted with a closed base structure so that they remain mobile and can be easily placed elsewhere. A bottomless version is also available, which allows large trees to take root in the open ground. Streetlife will gladly inform you about the possibilities afforded by the various options, such as Hug a Tub and CarrĂŠ Benches.

We spoke to Guy Watts, Co-founder & Head of Business Development at Streetscape, “I’ve been a keen gardener pretty much all my life. Post-university, I spent four years working at one of Europe’s most prestigious plant nurseries, Architectural Plants. It became clear to me there was a real lack of new and enthusiastic talent entering the horticulture industry; and a real opportunity for young people, eager to learn a trade, to gain employment.” “I work on a consultancy basis for Streetscape and am passionate about sharing my love for gardening with our apprentices, and getting in the business and funding that makes Streetscape tick. Guy has also been a BALI South Thames Regional Committee member since February 2014. Also a bit of a fan of extreme sporting challenges, on 31st July 2009 I broke two world records as part of the first and fastest pair to row unassisted land to land across the Indian Ocean in 102 days, 13 hours and 40 minutes Guy is one of the featured speakers who are part of the Master Classes being run by The London College of Garden Design.

Perennial Having recently completed the Dirty Dozen Races, raising over £5K for UK horticulture’s trade charity Perennial, and not content with sitting back on their laurels, the Twitter formed #GrubbyGardeners are back. Eight hardy members of the 15 strong team celebrated World Naked Gardening Day (3 May 2014) in style by posing naked at the world famous Roof Gardens in Kensington.

Head Gardener of The Roof Gardens, David Lewis, said, “Perennial supports horticulturists, young and old, who need support, advice and assistance in times of crisis.”. Michael Perry, Grubby Gardeners founder, gardening expert and presenter, is thrilled that the team is still coming up with fundraising ideas, he said, “The team has formed a real bond and we’re united in our aim to raise as much money as we can for Perennial this year. The shoot at The Roof Gardens was one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunities and we had brilliant fun setting up the pictures.”.

See us at LANDSCAPE Celebrating 175 years in 2014, Perennial is keen to raise its profile in order to reach more horticulturists who need help than ever before. A new website now makes it easier for people seeking help to get in touch with the charity and there are special events and fundraising activities happening throughout the year to raise a £175,000 target this year. You don’t have to get naked to show your support for Perennial just text your donation (GRUB89 to 70070) to help horticulturists in need or visit them at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Lumena Lights

The Gardeners Guild The Gardeners Guild now has a Maintenance Contract / Terms of Business Template for TGG members to download for free as part of their membership package. Members asked them to create a maintenance contract / Terms of Business Template that they could use. After consulting with members in their forum about what they wanted the document to achieve, they engaged a solicitor who is a specialist in contract law - after all, a poorly written contract is a useless document.

See us at LANDSCAPE

Whether you are a garden designer who already offers lighting as part of your service, or you are thinking about incorporating lighting into your projects, Lumena can supply, advise and simplify all lighting related issues. The current focus is on the high end ‘Charleston Cobra’ (Copper & Brass) 12v garden lights with versatile mounting options. All garden spotlights and spreadlights within the range are supplied with either a ground spike or a wall/tree bracket and are adaptable to any surface for any purpose. A variety of adaptable accessories are available, such as brass extension poles, mounting spikes and mounting bases. These enable all of the lights to be mounted on any surface, such as in soft ground, on decking or on a tree. The products use the same size thread stem (0.75 inches) which makes them extremely versatile and interchangeable when considering mounting options.

The result is a document that members can download and personalise. Used on its own, the new document template can act as a general Terms of Business. However, the document can also be a client specific maintenance contract when combined with a formal written quotation. By specifying payment terms as well as client and contractor responsibilities and liabilities, members can have greater confidence to grow their business. The aim is to help qualified, self-employed gardeners compete with larger firms by giving them affordable access to essential business tools. Membership is currently just £35 per year. TGG members can now benefit from over 14 different member benefits including free legal advice and over 50 other document templates and spreadsheet based tools, why not visit them at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September to find out more.

Focused on versatility, durability and price, Lumena offer exclusive discounts to trade professionals, and really are the perfect choice for the discerning garden designer, keen to offer a more complete service. See their entire range on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

CPD Certification

As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance.

LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 23rd of September 2014, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online in August at www.landscpeshow.co.uk.

On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.” Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend.

The interior of the cabinet is lined in leather, with the glasses housed on a series of handmade curved Harewood shelves. ESF

ESF have developed their Island Range. With a large Island for sitting, the higher one can serve to lay the laptop, the highest one as a backrest. The unique shape based on simple geometry of several oval features and three levels of horizontal surfaces offer a new perspective on the seating elements in urban spaces. Modules can stand alone or be linked in a playful archipelago. Intersection of shapes, various orientations of wooden panels and different colours of corpuses complete the overall effect. Wood on the horizontal surfaces may be replaced with high-pressure laminate (HPL) whose smooth surfaces, colour and graphic diversity create yet a different graphic character. Possibility of combination is not unlimited but is so wide that it will satisfy any creative architect who desires something new and unusual for his project.

Come and speak to ESF about all of their ranges at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Twenty-five years ago, ten European professional landscape architects met in Vilvoorde (Belgium) to create the European Foundation for Landscape Architecture (EFLA) inspired from the international experience they had witnessed, in 1948 with the creation of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), and who believed that our way of perceiving and understanding the world –derived from our profession- could contribute to its development. The European Foundation for Landscape Architecture has since then grown up and changed in many different ways. One of the changes being its name which from “European Foundation for Landscape Architecture” (EFLA) moved to “European Federation for Landscape Architecture” and finally to “IFLA Europe” further to a “Coming Together” agreement between IFLA and EFLA turning the organisation into the European region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects. Today, we celebrate IFLA Europe Silver Jubilee as a recognition of landscape architects unceasing work. A rich complexity of the landscape mosaic characterising their work, which deals with nature and culture, and considers man and society the focus of their beliefs. IFLA strive to establish the importance of all matters relating to landscape and landscape architecture as the physical, socio-economic, cultural, visual, conceptual and spatial context of our European communities and their holistic vision demands we establish, support, and promote the landscape architectural profession across Europe, contributing to international discourse, shaping and disseminating European initiatives, facilitating the exchange of information, whilst promoting excellence in professional practice, education and research culminating in a culturally rich, diverse and sustainable Europe. IFLA are proud to support LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

The Roof Gardens The Roof Garden’s commemorative 75th anniversary garden design has been awarded an Artisan Garden plot at the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Roof Gardens in Kensington has long been one of London’s most spectacular and extraordinary landmarks and the 9th May 2013 marked the Garden’s 75th anniversary. The Spanish Garden, originally designed by Ralph Hancock in the 1930s, is the base for the design featuring brightly coloured herbaceous planting to reflect the garden along with the original pillars, iron gate and balconies all used by Ralph Hancock in his show garden at the 1939 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Spanish Garden design is inspiring and vivid, representing the past and present characteristics of The Roof Gardens whilst showcasing how accessible they are for all. Head Gardener, David Lewis, commented: “Nowhere makes gardening more fashionable than the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. A catwalk of colour and creativity, the brightest new ideas, the latest trends and the pinnacle of garden design make this show the one the world wants to see and we are very privileged to be able to showcase aspects of our Spanish Garden at such a prestigious event”.

To celebrate The Roof Garden’s attendance at Chelsea Flower show we will be hosting a pop up Afternoon Tea on Saturday 24th May, where guests will be welcomed into the Tudor Garden and Spanish Hideaway to enjoy a delectable Afternoon Tea from 1pm – 5pm. David will be one of the featured speakers at the ‘free to attend’ CPD accredited Seminar Sessions at this year’s Battersea Park in September. The granting of a Royal Charter has been an aspiration of the Institute since its inception in 1984 in view of the major benefits it will bring to the Institute and its members. A Royal Charter will enhance the Institute’s ability to present our profession through increasing the profile, recognition and standing of professional horticulture. As a Chartered body the Institute’s ability to raise standards will be strengthened and the Institute will be better placed to represent and support horticulture as a profession and assist members in the practice of the profession. Leigh Morris FI Hort, Institute of Horticulture President commented: “The IoH is THE body representing professional horticulture and being granted a Royal Charter will reflect that to a much wider audience. Such status will undoubtedly give our members a higher status, stimulate more to join us, give the IoH much greater gravitas in our advocacy for the industry and it is something the horticulture profession deserves. The work done to date by IoH Council on taking this forward on behalf of horticulture is tremendous and all of us should recognise their vision and application in achieving this. The Institute has raised the bar for professional horticulture in the UK and Ireland. This is a landmark moment and exciting times ahead!” The Institute of Horticulture are delighted to be back at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September and look forward to welcoming new and existing members to their stand. www.horticulture.org.uk

Wednesday House is a detached country home in Hertfordshire and Aralia Garden Design recently completed a project for them. With the owners only wanting to remain in the house for 5 – 10 years, the emphasis was for Aralia’s design to add value to the property, making it both functional and more aesthetically pleasing. With minimal kerb appeal and little logic to the parking area, the front garden was given an overhaul with a complete new layout including extensive planting beds and a seating area. The back of the house also suffered from a lack of unity which Aralia addressed through thoughtful garden architecture and planting.

The artist, Peter Barney, has created a collection of paintings from one of the world’s most beautiful locations. After taking the time to immerse himself in the light, colours, shapes, textures, climate and culture he is delighted to be exhibiting his unique work at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September. Peter says, ‘Marrakech, basking in the blistering heat of midsummer, is a unique place that overwhelms and inspires all in the same instant. Enter the city through its famous pink walls, and lose yourself in the Medina’s bustling stalls. Sunlight sparkles on every smooth tile and tinkling fountain. Fabric in every shade imaginable festoons the Souk’s blind alleyways. Bewildering arrays of exotic fragrances fight for attention in the spice market. And high above it all, lingers Morocco’s deep endless blue skies. But one colour stands out more brightly and brilliantly: Majorelle Blue. It’s the trademark of French artist Jacques Majorelle. In 1924, he constructed a masterpiece in the form of the Majorelle Gardens. Here the walls, fountains, features and even pots are painted in the same intense shade of blue. In 1980, Yves St. Laurent purchased Majorelle’s house and garden, and the colours and shapes of his home are clearly the inspiration for his iconic branding and many innovative designs.

Gary Drostle Gary Drostle’s unique, colourful and beautiful mosaic works have been gaining a great deal of attention in the last year. Already this year his work has won the Mosaic Arts International award for ‘Contemporary Innovation in Mosaic’ in Houston, Texas. This award is the third time Gary has won at the premier International exhibition of mosaic art winning the award for Best Architectural mosaic in 2008 in Miami and last year winning the ‘Best in Show’ award in Tacoma, Washington. Gary’s best in Show award was given for his mosaic sculpture ‘Entwined Histories’ in Bow, east London. Commissioned by the housing association Poplar HARCA this work stands on the site of the former major rope making factory for the London Docks. Gary designed the sculpture to reflect the stories of the different migrant communities to the local area. Each of the eight different strands of the rope represent a different community that has settled in the area going as far back as the French Huguenots and the Irish Weavers. Each community is represented through it’s own unique textile. Gary will be at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September as part of the QEST Scholars stand.

Thrive is the leading charity in the UK using gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. The process is called social and therapeutic horticulture – put simply it is working with plants to improve physical and psychological health, along with communication and thinking skills. The charity uses the garden as a safe and secure environment in which to develop an individual’s ability to socialise, make friends, and gain practical skills that make them more independent and self-reliant. According to Thrive’s Alyson Chorley, gardening can benefit everyone, regardless of age or ability. “We help older people, and people who have had strokes to improve their mobility by getting their muscles moving. Gardening also improves mental health by providing a sense of purpose and achievement. It’s a very social activity and can reduce feelings of isolation and low mood – making friends is easy for some, but for others it is really difficult and having a shared interest can really help.” Thrive is looking for support – both financial and practical – at each of its four centres in London, Reading, Birmingham and Gateshead.

Streetscape

‘Growing lives’ is what Streetscape do. The South London based award-winning social enterprise works to reduce the skills shortage in horticulture whilst providing training and jobs to 18-25 year olds who are long term unemployed.

The enterprise provides apprenticeships in landscape gardening, helping young people to build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfil their dreams and move into and retain work. They design, landscape and maintain gardens across South London for residential, corporate and communitybased clients looking for that ‘wow factor’: the best possible use of shape and form. For Streetscape, garden and grounds design is about one overriding principle: taking client ideas and working with them to create something that makes them think ‘wow’. Streetscape would not be where it is today without the involvement and generosity of individuals and their corporate partners. They value the substantial impact they can have, both in sharing their expertise and knowledge, and through providing product sponsorship or monetary support.

All of Streetscape’s apprentices are young people who have been out of work for at least six months. Most have never worked. “Before Streetscape, I’d never had a job and was really struggling to find one. I now have my chance. I want my apprenticeship to lead to a career in landscape gardening.” – Graduate apprentice, 2012 Come and listen to Guy Watts as part of the London College of Garden Design Masterclass on Construction on Wednesday 24th September at LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park. Gilkicker

2013 was busy for Gilkicker Ltd. with sales of the Light`n`Shade opening and closing roof in all sectors growing quickly and gaining more credibility as one of the leading louvred roof system on the market. They have recently developed some new louvred roof and canopy products that they will be launching throughout 2014 under the Louveranda product range umbrella. Many of the projects Gilkicker Ltd. undertake are straight forward and simple, however, there are also quite a few that are anything but. These are actually the types of projects which give Gilkicker Ltd. the most fun and enjoyment as they call on them to draw from all their experience and knowledge of roofing, building, sun shading and installation techniques. These projects usually start with Gilkicker Ltd. being contacted by a client or their design team who have a particular need in mind and have often been looking for a solution for some considerable time. Gilkicker will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

See us at LANDSCAPE As well as different kinds of stone, the baskets can also be filled with other materials such as glass, for instance. The new Blicks Kreativ system from Rothfuss makes it particularly easy to implement creative ideas. This means that the stones can be filled in by hand at any time, allowing patterns and structures to be easily worked in, whether house numbers, geometric figures or the outlines of a wide variety of animals. Rothfuss are exhibiting at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Rothfuss

Gabions provide a reliable visual guard that can be installed quickly and, above all, flexibly. The stone material that is filled into the wire baskets can, for instance, vary in shape and colour. The stone wall can then be given a Mediterranean, classic or quirky look to suit the house. Many home and garden owners have come to value the modern, yet natural-looking style of gabion fences.

See us at LANDSCAPE

More and more home and garden owners are discovering that gabions are the ideal way of ensuring privacy on their property. That’s because as well as being quick and easy to put together to form a fence, the wire baskets filled with stone also offer plenty of scope for individual creativity. Now Rothfuss has developed a system that makes it even easier to put these ideas into practice.

Schellevis Schellevis launched their range of attractive concrete paving and other landscaping elements in the UK in March of this year. Following the launch, and the enthusiastic response received from landscapers and architects, Schellevis decided to exhibit at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show. An ambitious project for any company, and especially for a newcomer in the UK market!

The challenge they faced was “How to present an attractive garden site out of concrete products?” Gordon Stevenson, UK Sales and Marketing Manager of Schellevis said; “We wanted to maximize the visual quality of our paving and other landscaping products for Chelsea in a way which showed them in their setting in a garden or other landscape.” Given the task was Antonia Young, of Pod Garden Design who said; “I was delighted to be commissioned. Obviously the main point of the stand is to promote the rather fantastic Schellevis product, but I took the approach of designing this as a show garden space rather than a traditional trade stand. I’ve aimed to show a variety of Schellevis product and it’s flexibility of use as well as using some of the elements in some more unusual ways that will hopefully stimulate the imagination of everyone visiting the stand. “

“The public and media are becoming increasingly aware of the dramatic decline of our bee population, making now the time to take action and do all we can to save this important species,” explained Nigel Clarke, BeeMat Sales Manager. “A recent review by the University of Reading and Friends of the Earth concluded that planting flowers to provide pollen and nectar can make a significant difference to colony survival. BeeMat™ contains mixed flower seeds that have been carefully chosen to provide exactly this, especially in the autumn when other flowers have finished blooming. Plus importantly it controls weeds that can overwhelm some flower species.”

Timber Decking & Cladding Association The Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA) is a virtuoso in how to build decking properly. If you are involved in deck design and installation, their resources should be your first point of call.

The Timber Decking Association and it’s members are proud to support LANDSCAPE at Battersea Park in September.

Timber is an amazing building material. It allows you to create unique and captivating spaces to relax in and enjoy. Timber decking has inherent warmth which enhances its surroundings; the atmosphere is somehow softer, calmer and more harmonious to plants with which timber has a natural synergy.

Private and public areas are both suitable places to install timber decking. Decking is particularly good for sloping sites providing an easy and effective transition between the different levels. It’s a perfect partner to patio, French or bi-fold doors, helping to connect outdoor and indoor living areas and increasing the feeling of space in both. It’s also great for a quiet corner, a secret garden tucked out of the way, or alongside water.

Janet Sycamore director of operations explains more about the TDCA. ‘Our role is to support designers, specifiers and installers in the correct use of timber decking to ensure they get the right level of performance. Properly designed and constructed timber decking will provide years and years of trouble free service. Whether you’re undertaking the work yourself or using the services of a professional installer, it is definitely worth doing your homework before you start. We encourage you to use quality assured products; we have DeckMarkTM accredited installers and materials which are audited annually to ensure compliance with the standards set by the TDCA.’
