Welcome to Landskrona and Ven! I hope you take the opportunity to discover all the beautiful places in our town, in our villages and on our island, Ven. You will find almost everything you need here, especially if you like nature, culture, beach life and a rich, lively city centre. A big challenge for any holiday is finding things to do and places to go that everyone in the family appreciates equally. This new summer magazine gives you inspiration for your holiday in Landskrona and on the island Ven. The sea is a big attraction here, with everything from kayaking and fishing trips to swimming, crab fishing and boating. There’s also spectacular nature with trails that follow the coast line and offer beautiful views over the Öresund Sound. We locals are spoiled, with so many hidden gems close by. Sometimes I forget to visit them often enough. That’s why I’ll book a trip to Ven this summer and paddle a kayak for the first time. I really hope I don’t end up doing an Eskimo roll! I’d also like to make time to pat the alpacas, a little further down the track on the island. What’s on your bucket list this year? LANDSKRONA&VEN | 3

WITH SPACE IN FOCUS by maria andré photo mickael tannus and niclas lundblad

The Tycho Brahe Museum is on the highest point of the island of Ven. It’s a pilgrimage for both young and old people who are curious about space or who just want to enjoy the beautiful environment. There’s an exciting playground and a thriving Renaissance garden.

T

he reason astronauts from NASA have visited Ven is because it was here that space discovery really began 550 years ago. The scientist Tycho Brahe studied the celestial bodies from the highest point of Ven for two decades. His work laid the foundation for how we look at our solar system today, even during a time when religion had a great influence on science. Tycho Brahe did not abandon the doctrine of the earth as the centre, but he was pioneering in other ways. He was one of the first scientists to make longterm and systematic observations of space, which formed the basis for a new worldview.

10 | LANDSKRONA&VEN

It was here on Ven that modern space research began with the Danish king Frederick II giving the island to Tycho Brahe as a grant. It was a way to tie the scientist closer to the court. “At that time, Ven was an island inhabited mainly by fishermen and farmers. The myth is that they were not happy when Tycho Brahe here because he became lord of the island and had the right to collect taxes. The culture clash was great and their worlds were probably very different,” says Tina Jönsson, Operations Manager at the Tycho Brahe Museum. Tycho Brahe was born in 1546 into an influential Danish noble family on Knutstorp’s farm north of Svalöv. Skåne belonged

to Denmark at the time. He studied at several universities on the continent before settling on the island of Ven and started his own research centre. He built an Italian-style Renaissance castle with a garden and observatory at the highest point of the island. Here he could see both Helsingborg and Copenhagen, where he had lived. At the same time, no one could get there quickly. He was able to conduct his research fairly undisturbed and he appreciated the isolation. tycho brahe is a central figure in history among scientists studying space. He provided the research world with the data and observations needed for

Johannes Kepler to “crack the code” on what our solar system looks like. Tycho Brahe was not just interested in astronomy and space. He was a classical Renaissance man who studied medicine, botany and astrology. “This means there is a breadth here at the museum. For example, we have the beautiful Renaissance garden recreated according to Tycho Brahe’s drawings and shaped according to the symbolic ideal of the Renaissance into squares, triangles and circles,” says Tina Jönsson. the idea was that the garden would represent the Garden of Eden. Fruits and herbs were grown here which were later

used in Tycho Brahe’s alchemical works. The great thing about the Tycho Brahe Museum is that there is something for all ages and interests. The “Naked Eye” exhibition suits people that are interested in history, and outside there are activities for people who like to run around. there is a playground next to the museum with pulleys, stilts, skittles and balls. You can try fourteen different ways to play from the 16th century. Each station has instructions and information about the background of the game. Choose between testing your strength in a tug of war, try to knock each other off a log with

pillows or compete in an older variant of curling. “Another highlight of the museum is the Stjärneborg observatory, a reconstruction of Tycho Brahe’s observatory. Go into the ancient monument and experience what it could be like to observe for a night. The lights are switched off and an actor tells you what it was like to research space in the 16th century. It is an awesome experience”, says Tina Jönsson. What happened to Tycho Brahe after he had been researching on Ven for the two decades? According to history, a conflict started between Tycho Brahe and the Danish court in 1597 and he was forced to leave the island. He went into exile in

Prague where he continued his research and was appointed Johannes Kepler’s assistant. Tycho Brahe died in 1601. And what happened to Tycho Brahe’s Renaissance castle and the Stjärneborg observatory? When the scientist left, the islanders had no interest in preserving the buildings. Building materials were expensive and needed elsewhere. According to history, the bricks from the Renaissance castle are found in several homes on the island. The memory of Tycho Brahe lives on, both in science and on earth.

AN OASIS IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN by emma nilsson photo david elg, moob

Rothoff’s Koloni is a small, green oasis and Sweden's oldest and only preserved museum allotment. It’s in the middle of the Landskrona where the allotment tradition started in Sweden more than a hundred years ago.

O

wning an allotment has long been a strong tradition in Sweden. The Rothoff family bought the allotment, located in the central allotment area around the Citadel fortress at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, it has been passed down from generation to generation, and has largely been preserved in its original condition. “You can still walk on the same wooden floor as Anton and Hilma Rothoff once did when they took care of all the potatoes that the allotment provided,” says gardener Martin Bofeldt. famine was not uncommon in the early 20th century, and the allotments and potatoes became a way to survive. Today, the old raised beds for growing potatoes have been replaced with more adapted themes for allotments. The front of the cottage has been preserved in a classic detached house style with roses, perennials and boxwood plants.

cultivation is a trend that’s been around for a while, but has exploded recently. According to Martin the trend is here to stay, not least as more and more people are owning allotments. If you want to start growing on a small scale at home on your balcony, the most important things to keep in mind are solid pots and balcony boxes. “The more water a pot can hold, the less you need to water,” says Martin Bofeldt. people from all over the world come to experience Rothoffs. Landskrona residents appreciate their local oasis and see it as a bit like their own living room outdoors. Anyone is welcome here during daylight hours. Why not buy coffee and enjoy it in the beautiful alcove? Or sit down and read a news paper under a flowering tree? Whether you are looking for garden inspiration or just want to enjoy a moment in a dreamy environment, Rothoffs is the place for you. Sustainability is important for Martin. BIKE AROUND VEN AND TASTE ITS DELIGHTS by petra olander

With its own whisky distillery, durum wheat flour and canola oil, cycling around Ven offers the gastronomic tastes worthy of Tuscany – and a chance to learn more about the island’s forgotten crop heritage.

T

he sun rises from a clear blue sky as we get off the ferry. The island of Ven is shaped like a top hat, and our trip begins with exercise as we walk up to the bike rental place. Once we’ve rented our bikes and we’re on the plateau, cycling is comfor table, and the wind is pleasant. The island is small and cycling

wherever we want to is quick. “Ven Runt”, the circular path of the island that is part of the Skåneleden trail is only twelve kilometres long. we look forward to discovering the island’s gastronomical and geographic highlights. On the ferry to Ven we are fascinated by the island's nature with its soaring cliffs and wooden

houses, like small colourful pearls on the brim of Ven’s top hat. The scent of Ven is like a taste of everything culinary. The canola, the mallows and the meadows offer the taste of summer and the beautiful houses with their colourful gardens fill your senses. cycling on ven is easy and pleasant as bicycles and pedestrians own the roads. Cars have to wait their turn. An hour’s biking on cycle paths at a leisurely pace takes you from Bäckviken to the small harbour in Kyrkbacken. Just above Kyrkbacken harbour is St. Ibb's medieval church. Stop and enjoy the fantastic view. Blue sky, blue sea and Denmark oh so close. bread on wine, one of the restaurants in Kyrkbacken, uses bread as its base. Organic sourdough baked without yeast. The focus is on genuine ingredients: simple, locally grown, organic, wholesome, tasty food. Sitting in the harbour watching the boats and eating roast Ven plaice with potatoes, browned butter and forest mushrooms is as good as life gets. Content in body and soul, we walk along the quay to the bikes, parked along with 100 others. The queues at the port's kiosk are so long that we guess they offer something extra. But we go in a different direction: towards the centre of the island and the Spirit of Hven whisky distillery. The maize fields spread on both sides of the Norreborgs vägen road, which leads to Backafallsbyn and Spirit of

Hven, a family-owned company that runs a hotel, restaurant, shop and one of Sweden’s foremost whisky bars with its own distillery. A distillery that has become famous as it is one of the smallest in the world, where every thing from mashing to fermentation, distillation, oak barrel storage and bottling takes place under one roof. A tour here takes about 45 minutes among pipes, scents and boilers. Here is a boiler that looks like a chest of lots of drawers made of wood. We learn that it is a kind of perpetual motion machine for producing spirits. In the evening we take a seat in the facility's dining room and enjoy locally produced food with a wine package. Outside the window the corn grows close to the yard, something we now know is turned into whisky, along with barley and rye. the next morning we cycle to the northeast side of Ven and the Norreborg bathing area for a cooling dip. Then we follow Skåneleden along the coast to the south and turn back towards

the central parts of the island, where Pumpans Café is the next stop. Swimming and cycling have made us very hungry and the pizzas are irresistible. The food is made from organic ingredients, the apple juice is homemade and the coffee, which comes from their own roastery, is ground when we order. Flour is ground from their own stone mill – raw materials used with love. other people who appreciate the local ingredients are the restaurateur couple Wojtek Marczynski and Liselott Marklund. They have been running Pausa in Kyrkbacken harbour on Ven since 2020. Everything they serve is from Ven or Skåne and the wine selection mostly consists of natural wines. Their small restaurant consists of two red fishing huts built together and you can enjoy wonderful views of the harbour on one side and the sea on the other from the glazed veranda. The menu is all about a genuine Skåne love of ingredients without additives. The restaurant is small, there isn’t really room for families with children. But for us adults, the evening becomes magical when the sun slowly begins to set and we enjoy cod and mussels, fished by Ola the local fisherman; and try natural wine while the sea and sky explode in tones of yellow, orange and red. We let go of the thought that we will soon have to leave Ven.

EXPERIENCE VEN FROM THE SEA by sara ströberg photo oskar fäldt

Karl Hertting had always dreamed of living on an island. So when a plot of land with a sea view appeared on Ven, he went for it. Now he’s started Venkajak where he rents out kayaks so that more people have the chance to enjoy the beautiful nature around the island.

I

t’s a foggy spring-winter day when we visit Karl and Veronica Hertting in their house on Ven. Karl originally comes from Höganäs which is a few miles north on the mainland but has always had a romantic dream of living on an island. One day he got lucky when he found a plot with a sea view on Ven and immediately went for it. Karl has always been fascinated by the sea. Sailing and boating have been a big part of his life. When he saw a couple paddling a kayak past his jetty in the morning sun, he immediately wanted to try it. He found an old kayak on his neighbour’s land and paddled out onto the water. “It started with an involuntary Eskimo roll. Me and the kayak ended up upside down,” says Karl with a smile. He and Veronica bought a kayak each and began exploring Ven. They soon came up with the idea of renting out kayaks. “We wanted more people to experience what we love to do and we appreciate meeting 20 | LANDSKRONA&VEN

other people. So we decided to start Venkajak where we rent out kayaks. The kayak is a smart means of transportation, as it is easy to drag onto the beach. Karl Hertting suggests stopping and

swimming at a deserted beach or paddling into Kyrkbacken harbour and buying an ice cream. “It’s really nice experiencing Ven from the sea. A kayak gets you close to the beaches and the imposing Backafallen cliffs

which slope down to the water,” says Karl. Kayaking is an excellent combination of nature experience and exercise. You don’t need any previous experience and you don’t have to be well-trained. You must be able to swim to rent kayaks. Öresund is welltrafficked so you should have respect for the water and stay close to the beach. “We always check the marine forecast” says Karl. “We want to be able to inform customers about where the wind blows from most and where there are currents.” You get clear instructions on how to go paddling and what to think about before you go out. You can also hire life jackets and waterproof bags where you can store your lunch. “Today we focus on renting out kayaks, but in the future we hope to offer guided tours, courses and vacation packages of different kinds”, says Karl.

EVERYDAY LUXURY AT MATSCENEN by maria andré photo oskar fäldt and niclas lundblad

Tobias Nord and Elias Tingström had only met a few times before they decided to start a restaurant together. They couldn’t resist the venue in Landskrona’s 120-year-old theatre and started Matscenen, a place for everyone who likes decadence and flair.

LANDSKRONA&VEN | 25

T

obias Nord went to catering school in Landskrona in his teens and moved to Malmö to broaden his culinary horizons. He worked in the restaurant industry in Sweden and abroad for 15 years, testing all the main cooking styles. “I’ve always been curious and wanted to try different things. I’ve worked with traditional

Swedish cooking, American, Italian, Japanese, French. That’s the way my life was for many years. I worked with everything from local shacks to fine restaurants and broadened my food horizons. The restaurant industry is tiring, with late nights and long shifts. When Tobias started a family and moved back to Landskrona, he took a break from restaurant life for a while. “I missed working with food

and having a team around me. I started looking for premises in Landskrona. My idea was to run something on my own, like a small wine and tapas bar. When I saw the venue in Landskrona theatre I fell for it. I saw the opportunities here, to develop cooperation with the theatre and open up to the beautiful Theatre Park next door. The project became much larger, and Tobias needed someone to cooperate with. Tobias' sister is married to Emil Tingström, Elias Tingström’s brother. Elias worked as a chef in Stockholm. He and his partner Sanna had thought about moving to a smaller town, preferably in Skåne. “When I was thinking about moving I got a call from Tobias who asked me if I wanted to open a restaurant with him. When I came to the site in Landskrona we saw the potential immediately, with an open kitchen and a “living room”feeling. I’ve always been a bit of a gambler and felt we had to do this. We had a similar idea of creating Landskrona’s best restaurant”, says Elias Tingström. his roots are in French cuisine, and he trained at the School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts & Meal Science in Gryt hyttan, which has educated many of Sweden's best chefs. With experience from the Michelin starred Thörnström’s kitchen in Gothenburg, he felt ready to start together with Tobias Nord. They opened the doors to the Matscenen in the summer of 2020. The concept is small dishes and snacks you share.

They both like French cuisine but are open to other influences. Their food philosophy is all about having respect for ingredients. They make sure they keep the highest quality by being thorough with everything they buy. vegetables are from Sweden and mostly locally grown. In the summer they offer tomatoes from Tomatens Hus in Vallåkra, a few miles north of Landskrona. They strive for simplicity in cooking, where ingredients should not be overloaded with too many flavours. “Our menus are not purely French. We serve what is tasty with inspiration from around the world. If we are going to make a hummus for example,

“Our guests should feel seen and at home. Our restaurant is luxurious but not expensive.” then we make sure we create the very best we can prepare. Everything from scratch, of course,” says Tobias Nord. Pure food together with a warm welcome are important cornerstones in their concept. “For us it’s important to have high quality and perfection in everything we do. Even in our welcoming. Our guests should feel seen, and at home. It should be luxurious, but not expensive. You should get the feeling that

you don’t want to be anywhere else right now.” They want Matscenen to be a lively restaurant and have already developed lots of different concepts. Like bubble Thursdays with a Champagne theme and Pincho Fridays with classic Spanish dishes. “Tobias is the driving force for new ideas. I often get text messages in the evenings that start with “what do you think about..?”. We are different

people. I am more withdrawn and thoughtful. Tobias is more creative and outgoing and wants to test things,” says Elias Tingström. “Luckily, Elias thinks things through one more time”, laughs Tobias. They also want to develop several different parts of the restaurant and let guests take part in the Theatre Park next door. “We had a plan from the start to build a boules court and an outdoor restaurant just outside to make the best use of the space. We also have a cocktail bar at weekends with a DJ playing lounge music. We are passionate about this, to have parties, gatherings, fun and sit in the sun with a glass of rosé.” matscenen.se

“IT’S ABOUT GOOD MOOD AND GREAT FOOD” by maria andré photo whyland

Simon Tollesson was absolutely not going to work in a pub like his parents. Now he runs the Smörtaxen restaurant at Citadellet. Here he talks about his wayward journey and what it felt like to work at one of Sweden’s best restaurants.

T

wo “smala med mos” – a phrase that usually means a couple of hot dogs with mashed potato. The dishes at Smörtaxen look simple but they are a play on words. You don’t get two sausages on your plate. The first appetizer is a tartlet on almond potatoes with a filling flavoured with foam made from smoked sausage, mustard seeds and tomato powder. People obviously love this playful concept. When the restaurant opened for bookings in June 2020, they received 750 requests in 3 minutes. Then it was fully booked for the next three months. But how did Simon Tollesson end up in a former garage at Citadellet in Landskrona? Actually, it's not that strange. He grew up in a restaurant kitchen. His parents ran Farbror Elofs Skafferi in Billeberga and Tuna Krog on Ven. One day he had to work in the kitchen because his mother went home a bit earlier. “I had to do simple things,

30 | LANDSKRONA&VEN

like making mayonnaise from scratch. I thought it was great fun to cook. It came naturally, and I wanted to learn more.” He worked at reputable restaurants in Stockholm and Jönköping for several years before returning to Skåne and starting

at restaurant Vollmers in Malmö. Vollmers was awarded two stars in the 2017 Michelin Guide. “It was one of the biggest days of my life. I thought of all the hard nights, all the toil, all the nervousness, all the anxiety. It was definitely worth it.”

At the end of 2018, he heard about the vacant premises at Citadellet. Could be a restaurant? What do you want to create with Smörtaxen? “I loved the way we cooked at Vollmers. It was sophisticated food, but always tasty with pure flavours. At the same time we don’t want to create a fine dining restaurant, we want Smörtaxen to be high volume with a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. At Smörtaxen the feeling is more living room than dining room. ”I think atmosphere beats food quality every time. It’s about creating a good mood with great food. You should get the feeling that you’re in for a fun evening. Although Smörtaxen has been a success so far, Simon isn’t taking it easy. “I want to develop all the time. I'm always thinking about how we can get even better. And I’m grateful, especially to Sebastian and Elin for our great cooperation.” smortaxten.se

LANDSKRONA & VEN A great

brewing culture has grown up in Landskrona lately. Brygghuset Finn is an award-winning Skåne brewery working according to traditional methods combined with innovative engineering know-how. Brekeriet is another microbrewery in Landskrona run by three brothers producing sour beer and brett beer of various kinds, often with a touch of fruit and berries. 1413 Bryggkultur is a phantom brewery producing its beer at other breweries according to its own recipe. Their beers are named after places in Landskrona and 1413 is the year Landskrona was founded. Hvens Bryggeri is a nano brewery at Tuna Krog on Ven.

Martina’s Market - for the good life LANDSKRONA Fishing was a large industry in Landskrona

over a hundred years ago. Martina Liljeblad was one of the largest retailers in the fish market in the basement of the City Hall. She was a source of inspiration for the food market at Rådhustorget in Landskrona that has about 15 stores selling locally produced ingredients and delicacies. Martina's Market takes place on one Saturday in spring and one in the autumn. Visit iLandskrona.se for more information about dates.

A DAY OF ADVENTURE by petra olander photo david elg, moob

“look mom, it bites!” To our surprise, the little guy is right – the float gets pulled and everyone wants to help wind in the fish. But of course, he does it himself and soon he’s standing there with a live trout fished out of the Citadel's moat. His eyes glow with pride and we note that it weighs just over half a kilo before we drop it into the moat again. The fish are planted and you can rent spinning and fly rods to fish – great fun for people like us, complete novices as fishermen. Filled with excitement and searching for a reward for the big fisherman we walk to an ice cream bar. Dockside Ice Cream in the middle of Stadskajen has a great selection of soft ice cream, scooped ice cream, milkshakes, slush and more. It’s a sugary heaven for children. We look over the quay from the outdoor seating and see Landskronabåtarna which offers trips to the country's best

Landskrona is more than ice cream and swimming. After a day in the city we played big fishermen, discovered one of the Nordic region's best-preserved fortresses and tried out the fun sport of frisbee golf.

sea fishing waters. The M/S Linda chugs out with its bow full of enthusiastic fishermen. We decide that the next time we fish we’ll do it for real, out in the sea on the M/S Linda. Now it's time for the next adventure for our little ones with restless legs: disc golf. Everything in Landskrona is centrally located and close to the Citadel, one of the Nordic

region's best-preserved fortresses from the 16th century with its own moat. Close by is the city's 18-hole disc golf course. An easy walk from the harbour, through a lush green forest park past Landskrona Art Gallery, where we almost drop into be fore the children drag us away. Soon we’re at Landskrona citadel disc park with its lush landscape and the sun shining through the leaves. We download the UDISC app. We can enter the results and find the baskets using GPS in the app. It’s perfect if you’re visiting the city for the first time. Disc golf is also called frisbee golf and the idea is super-easy: Throw a disc or frisbee into a basket with as few throws as possible – like golf but with much lighter equipment. The starting order from tee is easy, the smallest goes first, then we throw in order of age. Our six-year-old is first off. The disc slides in a beautiful arc and

after a pizza each at cosy Mamma Teresa, we walk back to the Citadel where the eightyear-old suddenly exclaims: – Mom look! He’s amazed. There’s a cool playground inside the Citadel area with a medieval theme. There are jumping stumps, a play prison, balance beam, boat

and climbing frame. We sit down while the children climb around. We spot an augmented reality experience inside the Citadel's courtyard. Curious, we all go there. A sign explains that we can download an app and get stories from people who have been part of the castle's history. The little guy points his phone at the tower and sees the very

lands perfectly. Is our child a disc golf genius? The game continues mixed with pancakes. We get around, feel excited, happy and full of fresh air. The way back is along Kärleksstigen (the Love Trail) in the beautiful allotment area by the Citadel, scenic and romantic in one. Our bellies start to growl. Luckily, it’s never far to anything in this town. We walk through the city's magnificent centre, with monumental buildings from the last century. We point out and tell the children about lost and won battles in this once Danish city. Think that all this was once Danish!

last person sentenced to death in Sweden – the angel maker Hilda Nilsson. And I can see Tycho Brahe at the main building. We learn that the Citadel was a military fortress, a prison, a women’s prison and a refugee reception centre after the Second World War. That the most modern fortress in the Nordic countries was given up after a two-week siege during the Skåne War – but that no one really knows why. before we go home, we promise the children a visit to Citadellbadet with its jumping tower, slide, water carousel, bubbles, fountain room and hot pools with salt water from Öresund. We just can’t miss it. And the 50-metre pool means we adults enjoy stretching out in the water. 25 degrees in the water is almost like swimming in the Mediterranean. And just like on an Italian holiday, we promise even more ice cream after the swimming baths. LANDSKRONA&VEN | 37

Children Family HIKE WITH ALPACAS

A DIFFERENT TOUR AROUND VEN by sara ströberg photo oskar fäldt

Christel Ericsson’s alpacas are a well-liked feature on Ven. Everyone who meets these funny animals leaves with a wide smile on their face. Alpaca hiking is suitable for young and old alike who get a chance to get to know the alpacas’ special personality and Ven’s beautiful nature.

C

hristel Ericsson has lived on Ven since 2002 but she got the slightly different idea of offering hiking with alpacas from another part of Skåne. “A few years ago I was going to Österlen with friends and was responsible for planning the activities. After a lot of searching, I found Österlen Alpaca in Simrishamn. I was really excited and we went to check it out. The animals made a big impression on me, it was love at first sight.” Christel says that alpacas originate from South America where they are bred for their wool. The animals are sheared once a year and their wool is very soft and exclusive. After visiting Simrishamn Christel couldn’t forget the lovely animals that took her by surprise. She took a few courses at Österlen Alpaca and then made a field trip to an elk and 38 | LANDSKRONA&VEN

alpaca farm to learn more about caring for these animals. “Alpacas are like cats, they can’t be tamed and they do as they please. I think that’s cool. They are very charming too”, says Christel.

She has her own alpacas and has offered alpaca hikes on Ven for a few years now. Christel’s alpacas are tame and used to humans. The hikes are suitable for both adults and children over 6 years. During the tours,

Christel talks about alpacas and about Ven's history. The hikes are slow and the idea is to feel calm. “It’s not possible to stress alpacas, we follow their pace. That’s what makes the hike meditative”, says Christel. And usually guests have to adapt to the alpacas’ mood and behaviour. “I remember a hike when there was an unexpected rain shower. The animals crawled under the bushes and refused to move until it stopped raining. We just had to get on with it and wait until the rain stopped”, says Christel. Christel has noticed that most people experience true happiness when they get to spend time with her alpacas. “They become calm and happy. Several people have come back and recommended their friends to come here.”
