Editor’s Letter

La urbanización, la tecnología, el aumento de la cantidad de tiempo que las personas pasan en espacios cerrados, así como las restricciones vividas durante la pandemia COVID-19, han causado que, en los últimos años, se agudice la desconexión entre los seres humanos y el medio ambiente. Afortunadamente, hoy en día cada vez son más las personas que están reconociendo la importancia de relacionarse con los espacios exteriores. En esta edición hablaremos sobre la Arquitectura Biofílica, que es aquella que nos ayuda a tener una conexión con la naturaleza, a través de la incorporación de elementos naturales y sistemas sustentables en el entorno construido, creando espacios que promueven la salud física, mental y espiritual del ser humano. Compartiremos proyectos paisajísticos que han respetado, conservado y restaurado el medio ambiente en zonas en las que se han construido, así como proyectos que han incorporado especies vegetales para crear nuevos ecosistemas que permitan disfrutar de los beneficios que nos brinda la naturaleza.

Urbanization, technology, the increase in the amount of time that people spend in closed spaces, as well as the restrictions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, have caused the disconnection between human beings and the environment. Fortunately, today more and more people are recognizing the importance of interacting with outdoor spaces. In this edition we will talk about Biophilic Architecture, which is architecture that helps us have a connection with nature, through the incorporation of natural elements and sustainable systems in the built environment, creating spaces that promote physical, mental and spiritual health of the human being. We will share landscape projects that have respected, conserved and restored the environment in areas where they have been built, as well as projects that have incorporated plant species to create new ecosystems that allow us to enjoy the benefits that nature offers us.

Upon entering the 350-square-meter residence, in the first corridor with 5-meter-high ceilings and original wooden beams and joists, we find the living room on which a painting by Pedro Friedeberg is displayed. The floor design was made specifically for the house, using three different models to create a unique pattern. El área privada de la casa en la zona posterior, parte de la idea de respetar la vegetación existente, por lo que las cinco habitaciones, incluida la principal, se distribuyeron alrededor de los árboles que se encontraban a lo largo del terreno. La volumetría de esta zona es más sobria y pura, tratándose de cubos extruidos con diferentes texturas, como la habitación principal donde el primer cubo es de chukum, el segundo de un acabado típico hecho con mortero y con incrustaciones de barro y el tercero de piedra. El área de visitas es el único con dos niveles en toda la residencia y las texturas utilizadas en los cubos es el cristal y el chukum, en donde una escalinata justo a la mitad funge como eje rector y fuga las visuales hacia los árboles de ceiba del jardín trasero.

La habitación principal cuenta con vista directa hacia la alberca y hacia los centenarios árboles de ramón. Por esta razón el color del piso de pasta es verde-azul, emulando el color del agua de la piscina y de las hojas de los árboles al interior. El baño principal tiene como remate una tina que descansa sobre un deck de madera, conectándose directamente a un jardín. El diseño interior, en colaboración con Artesano, integra el pasado con el presente, creando un equilibrio entre el medio natural y el edificado, y mezclando materiales tradicionales con modernos. Casa Pakaal busca respetar la historia, la naturaleza y su contexto, generando diferentes ambientes y atmósferas para el disfrute de cada uno de sus espacios.

The master bedroom has a direct view of the pool and the hundred-year-old ramón trees. For this reason, the color of the pasta floor is green-blue, emulating the color of the water of the pool and the leaves of the trees inside. La forma y la topografía inclinada del sitio fueron los desafíos obvios a abordar. Con la simplicidad y la eficiencia como atributos de planificación prioritarios, la casa adoptó una configuración de patio exterior en forma de C. Como el jardín en el fondo del valle era inaccesible, el sitio en pendiente dio inspiración para incorporar dentro de la forma de C piscinas y terrazas en cascada que lógicamente fluirían hacia el “valle”. Se integró una exuberante vegetación en cada nivel de la casa para equilibrar la falta de área de césped. El borde de la piscina se vacía como una cascada, que se disfruta al entrar en el vestíbulo del sótano.

Los insectos palo y hoja (orden Phasmatodea) exhiben formas extremas de cripsis, imitando varias partes de las plantas, como ramas, cortezas y hojas vivas o muertas, lo que permite a los fasmatodeos engañar visualmente a los depredadores que les cazan. Estas formas de mimetismo vegetal se perfeccionan mediante comportamientos especializados, como la catalepsia (quietud adaptativa) y la imitación de una hoja meciéndose con el viento durante el día.

Stick and leaf insects (order Phasmatodea) exhibit extreme forms of masquerade crypsis, imitating various parts of plants, such as twigs, bark, and live or dead leaves, which enables phasmatodeans to deceive visually hunting predators. CARACTERÍSTICAS / FEATURES

El orden Phasmatodea incluye tanto insectos palo como insectos hoja. En el caso de los primeros, estas especies de fásmidos tienen formas cilíndricas parecidas a palos, de ahí su nombre. La mayoría de estas especies no tienen alas o las tienen reducidas, mientras que sus patas y antenas suelen ser largas y delgadas. The Phasmatodea include both stick insects and leaf insects. In the case of the former, these phasmid species have cylindrical stick-like shapes, hence their name. Most of these species are wingless, or have reduced wings, while their legs and antennae are typically long and slender.

HÁBITAT / HABITAT Los fásmidos se encuentran distribuidos por todo el planeta, excepto en las regiones polares. Las 3,000 especies conocidas se concentran especialmente en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales. Phasmids are distributed throughout the planet, except in the polar regions. CAMUFLAJE / CAMOUFLAGE: Phasmatodea es un grupo morfológicamente muy diverso, pero todos ellos tienen una extraordinaria capacidad de camuflaje, que es su principal defensa contra los depredadores, utilizando sus formas cilíndricas parecidas a palos para fusionarse con las ramas de las plantas de las que se alimentan. Algunas especies, como Carausius morosus, son incluso capaces de cambiar su pigmentación para adaptarse a su entorno. Otro método que los insectos palo usan para asemejarse más a ramitas y evitar la depredación es entrando en un estado cataléptico, donde el insecto adopta una postura rígida e inmóvil, la cual puede mantener durante un largo período. Phasmatodea is a morphologically very diverse group, but they all have an extraordinary capacity for camouflage, which is their primary defense against predators, using their cylindrical stick-like shapes to merge the branches of the plants they feed on. A few species, such as Carausius morosus, are even able to change their pigmentation to match their surroundings. Another method by which stick insects avoid predation and resemble twigs is by entering a cataleptic state, where the insect adopts a rigid, motionless posture that can be maintained for a long period.

Aunque predominantemente verdes, los insectos hoja muestran una diversidad considerable en color y patrón que representan diferentes etapas de descomposición de las hojas. Es corresponsable del Seminario Permanente de Lexicografía Científica para Arquitectura. Su línea de trabajo en el área del paisaje y del patrimonio se enfoca en el desarrollo de proyectos orientados a la regeneración, planeación, diseño y construcción sostenible del paisaje. Ha desarrollado proyectos en el área arquitectónica, urbana y regional con el sector privado, con colectivos civiles y con el sector público. A pesar de estas permutas que ha experimentado nuestra sociedad contemporánea, es de esta manera que se ha hecho más evidente nuestra creciente fascinación por la naturaleza. En las redes sociales podemos observar una tendencia al alza en el tema de la estética, una tendencia que implementa elementos naturales, principalmente elementos vivos, como resultado de estudios con bases sólidas que respaldan su inclusión. Hoy en día nos enfrentamos a muchos retos que nos impiden incluir vegetación en nuestras viviendas, ya sea por falta de espacio, de iluminación natural o de áreas abiertas, y es por eso que recurrimos a todo el espectro de materiales para vestir nuestros espacios: las imágenes, formas y texturas que emulan el contexto natural del hábitat.
