artists until the mainstream pays attention to them. So we started it, and the first artist I signed was Feist. The roster grew to include Keane, Lady Gaga and Sting. NOISE: This record is a compilation of songs various artists have performed at your Cherrytree office, right? Kierszenbaum: Yes — the Cherrytree House came from my experience in East Lansing and my parents letting me set up instruments in their living room. So now, it’s like a stage set up in my office, and a lot of the instruments I collected over the years from Music Manor and Marshall Music. I actually saved up the money to buy some of these instruments as a kid when I had a Lansing State Journal paper route, and they’re still in my office today.

graduated from U of M with a triple major: Spanish literature, music theory and communications management. I was playing with a hip-hop group at U of M called Maroon, and this was 1984, so there weren’t a lot of hiphop groups. We pressed a record, and it started getting notoriety… When I graduated, I ended up getting into a master’s program at the University of Southern California in communications management. I put everything I had in my Chevy and drove out there. I went to school at night and got an internship during the day, and that’s how it all started. NOISE: You started Cherrytree Records in 2005. Tell me about the label’s roots and connection with Interscope. Kierszenbaum: I had signed a Russian group called Tattoo on my own label, and also worked with Keane, and they were both doing really well … I went to my boss at Interscope and told him I’d love to start my own label and brand it as “pop alternative,” and develop those

Lady Gaga, Kelis, Feist — what do these artists have in common? They all got their start on Interscope imprint Cherrytree Records. East Lansing native Martin Kierszenbaum founded the label. His latest project is the Cherrytree’s first compilation digital album, “The Cherrytree House Sessions, Volume 1,” featuring stripped-down performances from artists including Sting, Feist, Kelis, Far East Movement and more. Kierszenbaum checked in with NOISE to talk about his roots and the idea behind this new compilation. NOISE: What were your first experiences with music in East Lansing? Kierszenbaum: I studied piano as a kid and pretty quickly got into songwriting. I tried to put together bands with kids from Okemos and East Lansing and met other musicians by posting fliers on the walls at Marshall Music. I ended up connecting with musicians from DeWitt, Okemos and East Lansing, and we were playing in high school bands and clubs. It was a different time. Things moved a lot slower because there was no Internet. NOISE: When did you realize you wanted to work in the music industry? Kierszenbaum: Pretty early on. I was going to middle school, and I remember learning about music theory. I learned if I took those building blocks, I could write my own songs. My parents let me have rehearsal space in my living room, and they were the only parents who let us do that, which was really cool. NOISE: When did you decide to move from Michigan to Santa Monica? Kierszenbaum: Well, I

MTV reinvents itself — again — with new generation David Bauder The Associated Press

Over the years, one of the last things you’d see on the youthobsessed MTV was a parent. Now moms and dads aren’t unusual sights, even on the twin totems to wild behavior and its consequences — “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom” — that are key to the network’s latest resurgence. Many young viewers targeted by MTV have no problem with parents being an active part of their lives, even during rebellious years, and expect their presence on television. Understanding such generational nuances is crucial to MTV, which has the brutal imperative of reinventing itself every five or six years to appeal to a

new group of 12- to 24-year-olds. Their viewers eventually grow up. MTV never can. The latest reinvention has MTV with its best ratings in five years. The third season of “Jersey Shore” was the network’s top-rated show ever, and the second season of “Teen Mom” similarly zoomed up the charts. The challenge now is figuring out how to build on that success and know when to be ready for the next reinvention. This spring, MTV has steered in a surprisingly traditional direction. MTV debuts a remake of the “Teen Wolf” series on June 5, brings back “Beavis and Butthead” later this year, has its own weight loss series for teens and two “Jersey Shore” spinoffs

in the works. Between recycled ideas, spinoffs and a new focus on establishing scripted series, MTV’s approach feels more like a typical broadcast network than ever before. MTV viewers “want more from us,” said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music/ Films/Logo Group. Toffler, who has been with MTV since 1986, and newly appointed network president Stephen Friedman, at MTV since 1998, have survived its ups and downs over the years. MTV viewers are interested in the rites of passage — such as young people moving into their first apartments and getting jobs in “Real World” — that are relatable yet more entertaining than their own lives, Friedman said.

The success of “Jersey Shore” has jump-started two spinoffs. ELISABETTA VILLA/GETTY IMAGES

“We’re looking for the lives of our audience amplified,” he said. Blessed with success, MTV is looking to spread the “Jersey Shore” franchise with two spinoffs. In one, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “J-Woww” Farley buy a new house together; the other focuses on what disc jockey Paul “DJ Pauly D” DelVecchio’s life is like. Neither project has air dates yet. For MTV and other networks, taking advantage of a huge success in this manner is like holding your hand close to a fire. You can be warmed or burned, and it can all happen very fast.

The mama at MaMa’s Kitchen must be a bit more relaxed than mine, as two small, flat-screen televisions were on ESPN above the breakfast bar. There also is a bakery right in the front of the restaurant that sells a variety of goodies.

The food

We decided to share the

“BIG breakfast” meal and an order of waffles. The Belgian waffle ($5) comes with choice of blueberries of strawberries, which is what we opted for, and whipped cream. The strawberries were refreshingly fresh and light, and wasn’t sitting in heavy syrup, which was a big plus. The whipped cream got taken off, which, while disappointing at first, was probably for the better in the end. The breakfast platter

($7.95) has three eggs made your way, three sausage links, hot cakes, potatoes and toast. Everything was more than filling. In fact, we didn’t even get a chance to touch the hot cakes. The sausages were Polish sausages, which instantly made it better. My one forkful of eggs were cold, but the rest, thankfully, were warm. The potatoes were big chunks that were crisp and hot.

The Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau has enlisted businesses from Okemos, Holt and Grand Ledge to take part in the 17th annual Be a Tourist in Your Own Town festivities, but the most bustling spots on Saturday will be downtown Lansing and Old Town. Visitors can tour the Capitol and then sprawl out its lawn to watch as brave souls rappel the Boji Tower. In Old Town, visitors can stroll through the streets full of artists competing in Chalk of the Town in between stops at Preuss Pets and Elderly Instruments. There are plenty of bargains on classic summer fun too, including free miniature golf, skate rentals and boat rides around the Lansing area. There’s more than enough touristy fun on tap to tucker out your kids (and you) during the day, but if you have any energy left we’ve put together our picks for the local nightlife events worth finding a baby sitter for, too.

Old Town Riverbash The official Be a Tourist in Your Own Town festivities don’t start until Saturday, but the DeWitt Creativity Group and the Old Town Commercial Association have joined forces to put on the first Old Town Riverbash on Friday. The event will shine a spotlight on local high school talent and introduce the suburban teenagers to the creative community in Old Town with a series of performances and activities throughout the evening. “We’ll showcase high school students’ creativity in many ways and introduce them to the cool atmosphere of Old Town,” said event organizer and DeWitt teacher Jeff Croley. “It’s a win-win for everybody, and all the high school students are really pumped about it.”

DeWitt teacher Jason Lafay said Riverbash is a extension of the DeWitt Creativity Group’s goal to create opportunities for teens to contribute to their community. “Usually, talent retention strategies are focused on college students, but if you start getting them younger when they are in high school, I think it means a lot,” Lafay said. “High schoolers are not so used to being courted in this way. It makes them feel important and it builds a stronger sense of regionalism with Lansing as the anchor.” The Riverbash will include a poetry slam, documentary video and short film showcase, improvisational comedy performances and live music by local high school students and recent graduates.

Sir Pizza will host the evening’s kickoff speakers at 5 p.m. Most performances will take place in Sir Pizza or outdoors at the corner of Turner Street and Grand River Avenue. The Old Town Riverbash also will include a shooting contest by the Lansing Capitals Basketball team at Arctic Corner. Riverboat tours of downtown Lansing will be available for $1. Most of the Old Town galleries will stay open for extended hours for the monthly First Friday Gallery Walk. Teams of four can sign up for a historical landmark scavenger hunt by meeting near the Clark Hill building at 6:30 p.m. and be in the running for prizes. NIGHT LIFE

As Catherine Babcock left a reception at the Lansing Art Gallery last summer, she couldn’t help but notice that downtown Lansing was buzzing with activity. “I thought if we couldn’t get them to come into the reception maybe we could take the art to them,” she said. It inspired Babcock, executive director of the nonprofit Lansing Art Gallery, to team up with the City of Lansing Arts & Cultural Grant Program and Arts Council of Greater Lansing to create the City Streets Exhibition. The interactive outdoor art exhibit features prints of 80 works of art by Michigan artists along the sidewalks near the intersection of Washington Square and Michigan Avenue. It will be on display Saturday during Be a Tourist in Your Own Town. “This is a great way to expose (the public) to art and educate them without really making it feel like we’re educating them,” Babcock said. Artist Tony Hendrick of Grand Ledge was a juror for the exhibition and also has two paintings on display in it. “I’ve participated in ArtPrize for the past couple of years in Grand Rapids so this is a nice thing for Lansing to be able to do to get art out to the public,” he said. “It’s a great beginning, and I’d like to see where it continues.” Each piece in the exhibit is accompanied by a phone number, which plays a recording of the artist describing the artwork when called, and a number to text message if the pedestrian wants to vote for the piece as the People’s Choice Award for the exhibit. Hendrick said he was impressed with the quality of work submitted for the show. “It’s fun to see artists in your own state and the kind of work that they are doing and to realize that there’s a lot of depth in the artists right here in Michigan,” he said. “You don’t have to go to New York City or California to see great art.” The prints will be on display through September whenever weather permits. Each piece also has a web page on the exhibit’s website, lansingcitystreets.com, with photos, artist bios and statements about their inspiration. Voting for the People’s Choice Award is available on the site, as well. Some of the original pieces of art are on display in the Lansing Art Gallery, and many are for sale.

Eddie Vedder, “Ukulele Songs” (CD) Not every musician could pick up a ukulele, write a handful of songs and turn them into an album worth listening to, but Vedder does. Vedder can make a song featuring only himself and his little instrument sound full and complete because his voice is such a weathered, grounded thing. His baritone counteracts the sprightly sound of the ukulele, ensuring that the listener doesn’t get lost in a sea of treble clef and optimism, and the combination allows Vedder a wide range of emotional expression.

Ozzy Osbourne, “Blizzard of Ozz / Diary of a Madman: 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” Obsourne’s two best albums have been spruced up yet again, but this time with much more exciting results. The special “Collectors Edition” box set, which is only available through Ozzy’s official site, is the real draw. The 30 Years documentary is enjoyable, but at 42 minutes, could have been longer. Whether you choose to buy the individual albums or splurge on the $150 box set, the Osbourne camp and Sony Music have done an admirable job putting together a reissue package that does these albums justice.

“Biutiful” (DVD) Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu coaxes an astonishing performance from Javier Bardem, who moves dreamily through a Barcelona underworld marked by flashy strip clubs, grim sweatshops and crowded streets. His face shows every moment of compromise and defeat he has lived. Like Klaus Kinski in “Aguirre, Wrath of God,” Bardem wears his character’s existence so comfortably that he doesn’t seem to be acting so much as inhabiting the part. The colors are rich and saturated, and some of the director’s signature tricks are on display, such as moments of great activity coupled with utter silence. He specializes in fractured narratives, multi-stranded stories that leap across space to provoke unlikely, unexpected connections, and succeeds at this, once again.

READ Alone in the Classroom,” by Elizabeth Hay Hay’s follow-up to the Scotiabank Giller Prizewinning “Late Nights on Air,” has the author conjuring up a story that is multigenerational in arc and that hop-scotches across geography. It’s a stirring, majestic tale that is ultimately about small towns in Canada and the many layered secrets that they harbor. This is a richly textured bon-bon of a read, and it’s often hard to put down because of its dense layers. Hay has another chance at the Giller with this wonderfully delightful concoction.

I AM V E RY FAR (Jagjaguwar Records)

Will Sheff doesn’t get near enough mainstream notice as a lyricist and storyteller, because he belongs in every conversation including The Mountain Goats or The Hold Steady. And the vivid images, wrapped in affecting melodies he crafts on “Very Far,” should go a long way toward propelling him beyond. Ditching some of the Americana-flavored instrumentation for distorted wave of sound, Okkervil dials up the dark synth pop influence both sonically and with the occasional disaffected vocal delivery. But behind it all are the piercing, startling literate lyrics that open a world somehow welcoming and insular. Ending with the building surge of the near-triumphant ‘The Rise’, “I Am Very Far” leaves you exhilarated and drained like the best of challenging music, and its late-night confrontation and reverie rewards your return time and time again.

“Ray Lewis says crime will increase if the NFL season gets locked out for 2011. Is he talking about the fans or the players?” — Michael Jones, Birmingham, AL I rarely know what Ray Lewis is talking about. From the look in his eyes during the ESPN interview you’re undoubtedly referencing here, I’d say he’s worried about the fans. Lewis basically stated in a very apocalyptic way that people depend on professional football to make their lives worth living, and without it, would fall into fugue states and wander the streets looting and plundering. I tend to think that we’ll all find something else to do with our Sundays, but that’s just me. “Will Jim Leyland be fired if the Tigers don’t finish this season strong? AN D I O STE R S ostersan@gmail.com

I definitely don’t think he’ll be gone before the season is through. Leyland and Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski are notoriously close; and both of their contracts expire after this season. Depending on how the Tigers fare in the AL Central pennant race (I think they’ll take 2nd) — we could be looking at a very different management team at Comerica Park in 2012. “How does MSU football’s backup quarterback situation look?” — Dave Mulder, Lansing Many of you may recall the last time we watched the Spartans play football; in the Capital One Bowl against an Alabama team that made our quarterbacks look like toddlers on NyQuil. In the fall, senior quarterback Kirk Cousins returns for his final year boasting a beefy résumé chock full of leadership experience, skill development and wins. Second on the depth chart is sophomore

Andrew Maxwell, who you’ll likely remember for taking a few vicious shots to the head and neck region during that same bowl game. Both Cousins and Maxwell spent their spring break attending a quarterback camp, tightening up their fundamentals before the upcoming season. This season will provide excellent experience for Maxwell from the sidelines — I expect him to have a good grasp of schemes by the time he takes the helm. “Could Gus Johnson make the WNBA watchable?” — Shawn Secor, Lansing Probably? He’d need to come up with a super exciting way to describe missed shots. Ooooooh, burn.

Coachella hoping expanding event is twice is nice Todd Martens MCT News Service

Concert promoter Goldenvoice is taking its wildly successful Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival model and doubling it. Paul Tollett, the architect of Coachella in Indio, Calif., and head of Goldenvoice, unveiled plans to launch a second multi-day music event in 2012 at the Indio site. Coachella will now be held over two consecutive weekends, the first on April 13-15, 2012, and second on April 20-22, 2012. “We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends,” the company said in a statement. “That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.”

Modeled after major long-running European festivals such as Denmark’s Roskilde and England’s Glastonbury, Coachella is coming off its second-consecutive sell-out year, hosting approximately 90,000 people per day. Tickets for the 2011 edition went in a record six days, and the event, held at the Empire Polo Grounds, is considered the unofficial kick-off to the summer festival season. Passes will go on sale via Coachella’s official site Friday and will be available until June 10. In prior years, tickets were not sold until the lineup had been revealed, and were sold via Ticketmaster. Tickets are once again priced at $269, not including additional fees, and for those

who don’t wish to pay in full up front Goldenvoice is again offering tickets through a layaway plan, with 10 percent down and eight equal monthly payments. Coachella 2011, headlined by the likes of

Kanye West, the Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon and Robyn, was one that featured numerous technological and hospitality tweaks. To cut down on counterfeiters and gate crashers, Goldenvoice instituted electronically encrypted wrist-

bands that festival-goers were forced to wear to get within sight of the grounds. Additionally, Goldenvoice has been heavily investing in enhancements to the Polo Grounds and surrounding area, helping to upgrade roads by funding additional lanes, and increasing festival space by 25,000 square feet. Fans will be allowed to buy tickets for each weekend, should they be inclined, but festival passes will be limited to four per household. Additionally, fans will not be allowed to change weekends once a purchase has been made. Passes will be mailed in March, and if tickets remain after the one-week presale, they will be made available once the lineup is announced. Inter-

national attendees will have the option of picking up their passes at an off-site will call. Tollett had earlier told the Los Angeles Times that he had been caught offguard when Coachella sold out in six days, as previous fests had been on sale for weeks, and typically sold out only days before it began. After the sellout, Goldenvoice kept a vigilant eye on counterfeit tickets — photos of which were posted on the Coachella website — and has also taken note of the number of real wristbands being sold on eBay or Craigslist. “Do NOT buy passes from a third party,” Coachella has already warned on its site. “They cannot be authenticated.”

This book hooked me from its first sentence: “My father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist.” Set in 1980s Atlanta, award-winning author Tayari Jones’ third novel tells the story of two families that share one father — the public Witherspoon family with wife Laverne and daughter Bunny Chaurisse, the product of an accidental teenage pregnancy, and the private family born of passion with Gwendolyn and daughter Dana Lynn Yarboro. The fascinating tale of two families inextricably linked yet permanently divided unfolds first through the eyes of daughter Dana, who is painfully aware of being a secret, and then through the viewpoint of Bunny Chaurisse, who is blissfully unaware of the shaky foundations on which her entire existence balances. Jones skillfully weaves a number of themes throughout the girls’ narration, including the definition of family and identity, the nature of sisterhood and the status of race in the South. Beautifully told and fully realized, I highly recommend it.

S H O U T ! FAC TO RY (Approx. 280 min. Unrated, PG, R)

Another dispatch in the Corman Cult Classics line from the superheroes at Planet Shout! this satchel of Southernfried romps from the heyday of mindless drive-in cinema delivers the goods for the less-thandiscerning moviegoer. These dusty pursuit movies are a strange breed of cult film, in that they don’t lay on gratuitous violence or sex. There is a dash of both, sure, but even with an R rating, the goal is a fun, near slapstick adventure as the alluring lady leads outsmart, outshoot or just plain blow up everyone around them. The highlight is “The Great Texas Dynamite Chase,” a proto “Thelma & Louise” story featuring Claudia Jennings (“Gator Bait”) as one half of a why-the-hellnot bank robbing duo, that is full of simple, low-budget explosions and a few laughs. These play great on a sweltering day, so crack a cool one and plan a triple feature.
