Lansing metal band packs melodically brutal tracks In more than nine years of intense thrashing and rocking, Genocya have learned how to fashion tunes that are musically challenging and melodically forceful. Along the way, the Lansing-based metal band has opened for majors, ala Testament, Anthrax and 3 Inches of Blood. The outfit’s first fulllength, “Ever Descent,” is packed with a combination of gritty riffs and captivating melodies. They release the album Saturday at Blackened Moon Concert Hall in Lansing. Lansing’s Shaun Peters (Wasteland) mixed and produced the album and metal producer Dave Otero (Cobalt, Arcanium) mastered it at Flat Line Audio in Denver. Influenced by different sounds, the album doesn’t shadow any one metal subgenre or artist. “The only thing that inspired us to do this was the fact we wanted to put something out that represented the lineup of this

band, and we didn’t want to sell people something we weren’t happy with,” bass player Jim Albrecht said. Many modern bands shoot for an overly polished, studio-squeaky clean album, but not Genocya. “I’m most proud of the fact that the album represents how we are live,” Albrecht said. “It’s not an overproduced album to the point where we could never reproduce it live. What you hear on there is what you’re going to hear going to a show. “For me, it represents us in a good way, and we’re happy with how it sounds overall. We’re simply happy for the fact it’s out because for us, not having anything out for as long as we have has made it something we’ve wanted to do.” There’s another factor that contributed to the album’s overall cohesiveness and welcoming vibe. The fact that band members — Albrecht, Dane Brown (vocals), Brad van Staveren (guitars), Matt “Yukon” Cunningham (gui-

They’re true friends. “This whole nine-year journey has had its ups and downs, but overall, it’s been so fun, and I feel lucky to even be here doing this and making music with these guys,” Albrecht said. “The fact we all get along so well and that there are no egos in our band means a lot.”

Cults, “Cults” (CD) The secret to Cults’ success is the way the group takes reference points that have been cited to death by now and breathes new life into them, putting a twisted twist on what only appears to be lovey-dovey girl-group pop through their edgy, inventive compositions and the effed-up romances Madeline Follin sings about. It might be easy to become a prisoner of the moment when it comes to a flavor-of-themonth like Cults, but this initial effort is one that shows off strong enough pop chops to win them their fair share of true believers, now and hereafter.

Younger viewers might also want to tune in and find out just how hard they will need to work to live in a world with neither certainty nor optimism.

I made it about a quarter-mile before I sharply pulled up. Time to take stock of what was happening. I could feel my heart beating against my sternum (I think); I was sweating profusely and open-mouthed panting on the side of the road. I also briefly thought about turning directly around and driving my car to the nearest orthopedic surgeon — the joints were aching.

And brace yourselves: It’s about running. Something bizarre happened last week while I was walking into my airconditioned office. I took a step, and after I had planted my foot, something behind me … wiggled. Pardon the reference, but have you ever watched a flatulent canine become confused about the origin of an aroma? They quickly flip around and are all at once shocked, bewildered and generally dumbfounded by the event. This is exactly how I felt when my rump moved without my consent last week. I promptly walked into my office and decided that I was going to run. I didn’t know where or how, I only knew why: the Unwanted Wiggle. Nina Santucci and Anthony Maiale of The Purple Carrot Food Truck are taking working in close quarters to a new level. The couple’s been dating for six years and have worked together in restaurants nearly all that time. Before moving to Michigan, she was a general manager and he was the chef of a Philadelphia restaurant. “We were there 70 hours a week but there were days when I wouldn’t see him all day because we were in completely different parts of the restaurant,” Santucci said. “Now I’m a foot apart from him.” “And she’s in my kitchen,” Maiale said. The East Lansing couple opened a mobile restaurant in May, inspired by the popularity of food trucks in other cities. “I had lived in Austin (Texas) and they have a ton of food trucks there,” Santucci said. “It’s such a fun idea. It’s so cool to be able to go up to a truck and get some gourmet fare that’s cheap and casual.” The couple hopes to build a customer base using the food truck so

Santucci said one of the big draws for starting The Purple Carrot in East Lansing was the potential for using locally sourced ingredients because Michigan is second only to California in agricultural diversity. “The kind of food that we want to do is a little less mainstream than what you see in the area,” Santucci said. “We thought this was a pretty safe way to introduce our concept and feel out the market to see how people like it before we go into a brick-and-mortar type of an establishment.” High-volume foot traffic areas are ideal for food trucks, but for now Lansing and East Lansing development offices haven’t issued permits to allow the mobile restaurants to set up in downtown shopping districts. Instead, Trailer Park’d and the Purple Carrot have found businesses with parking lot space to spare a few blocks

off the most beaten paths and received permits approved to set up there. Trailer Park’d sometimes calls the car wash on the corner of Cedar and Liberty streets near Old Town home. The Purple Carrot food truck can often be found at the Hannah Center at 4660 Hagadorn Road. They both make the rounds at local farm markets. East Lansing planning and zoning administrator Darcy Schmitt said the city is working on an ordinance to accommodate food trucks. “We still have a long way to go with it,” Schmitt said. “Right now our concessionaire ordinance would allow food trucks. We’re looking at determining an area or a zone these food trucks could be accommodated (in). “We have everything from a food truck to a vegetable stand to somebody selling T-shirts. There are a lot of different things starting to pop up on a regular basis. Times are changing and our ordinance is a little bit outdated in that area.”

‘Streamlining’ process

City officials are updating language for concessionaire’s licensing and then the East Lansing City Council will have to approve the new ordinance. “We don’t want to discourage people from going through the process because our language is confusing,” Schmitt said. “We’re trying to streamline the process.” The policies determine how, when and where a food truck or trailer could operate. As part of the licensing, the mobile restaurants have to pass health department inspections.

The Purple Carrot food truck serves Hi 5 Potato Salad. The truck serves sandwiches, soups and salads.

Working toward a cause

The Purple Carrot’s signature dessert is a trio of carrot cake pops dipped in purple icing.

“Of course you’re going to get different opinions across the table from business owners and the downtown development authority but I think overall they see it as a positive thing,” Schmitt said. “I think things like that have been proven in other communities (and) have the potential to bring people downtown to go to other businesses as well.” Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope said food trucks and trailers can get transient merchant permits to operate in the city and need to get each location approved before serving food. “There is a requirement for transient merchants that they cannot be in any location within 300 feet of a permanent business dealing in the same goods,” Swope said. That means a food truck selling tacos couldn’t get a permit to open next door to a Mexican restaurant. Hahn is disappointed he hasn’t been able to get a permit

to set up in downtown Lansing. “Right now we’re just trying to keep day-to-day operations going,” Hahn said. “Our business model changed quite a bit (since) we’re not located where we were planning on being. “We’re paying our bills and making payroll and figuring it all out. It’s a work in progress. If it was easy everybody would do it. ” Much of the appeal for business owners is the low overhead cost. The Purple Carrot crew found a food truck on Craigslist for about $10,000 and put in about another $6,000 to get it ready for business. “Anything that you can create in a commercial kitchen you can make in a food truck,” Santucci said. “Because it’s on a small scale, there’s less risk involved.” Hahn said it costs him about $20 a day in gas to power his generator and $90 a week in propane to fuel the kitchen.

Even though startup costs are less, mobile restaurants are impacted more by the elements than a traditional storefront. “If it’s too hot, we’re dead, if it’s raining, we’re dead,” Hahn said. “You have to catch those perfect days or you have to have really, really good food to get those people to come regardless.” The restaurants’ locations vary based on the day of the week, and they use social media tools like Facebook and Twitter to publicize where they are on a daily basis. “It’s pretty cool how quickly word travels on the Internet and the added bonus is it’s at no cost to us,” Santucci said. Many major cities, including New York City and Los Angeles, have seen food truck scenes expand exponentially in recent years. The restaurants often gather and form temporary food courts. “I think it’s a great community event to get people together to try different foods that maybe they otherwise wouldn’t have,” Santucci said. “We would love to have a bunch of food trucks come to the area and do what they do in Austin and all set up together and form a community.” Hahn agrees. “I’ll have some people stop by and they’ll think the Purple Carrot is our competition but the Purple Carrot is an ally,” Hahn said. “They’re helping our cause, we’re all in it together. The competition is Applebee’s and McDonald’s and people that are doing food the wrong way.”

Finding a home

“If you’re a brick-and-mortar you can’t really pull that off,” Hahn said. He bought his trailer from a caterer in Grand Rapids and outfitted it with the help of family and friends, putting his startup costs at about $45,000. The Purple Carrot and Trailer Park’d said it’s taking some convincing to make customers comfortable with the idea of food from a mobile kitchen. Hahn hopes the menu speaks for itself. “They see that we’re serious about what we’re doing and not a roach coach, we’re not just slinging hash,” Hahn said. “We’re serious about food and barely sleep because of it.”

area that seem like they are underutilized.“ The mobile restaurants buy many of their ingredients from local farmers and artisans. Hahn’s menu features breads from Stone Circle Bakehouse in East Lansing, meat from Clear Creek Farms in Eaton Rapids, produce from Owosso Organics and cheese from Calder Dairy in Carleton. The Purple Carrot has partnered with Ten Hens farm in Bath, Chapman Farms in Eagle and Roma Bakery in Lansing. The menu at both restaurants changes almost daily based on what’s fresh and in season. “We take a minimalist approach to things and let the ingredients speak for themselves,” Hahn said. “We’re pulling out of asparagus and rhubarb and ramps and morels and pulling into berries now.” Trailer Park’d serves hearty burgers ($7.50), pork sandwiches on corn bread ($7.50) and chorizo tacos ($3.99). Even the salad ($7.50) is served with crispy pork belly and a fried egg on top. The Purple Carrot’s menu tends toward the lighter side, with Vietnamese-spiced sandwiches ($7) and a bold beet borscht ($4). Their signature dessert is a bundle of bite-sized carrot cake pops dipped in purple icing ($1).

‘Go the F*** to Sleep’

BY ADAM MAN S BAC H AND RICARDO CORTES (AKASHIC BOOKS)

This book is genius. Period. The buzz surrounding this kids’ book for grown-ups was so great that they bumped up the release date so that it’d be available in time for Father’s Day, and it was very good move. Illustrated in the soothing style of classic picture books like “The Night You Were Born” and “I Love You Forever,” this is the perfect gift for sleep-deprived parents everywhere. (Considering my mother had to literally sit on me to make me sleep at night, I’m considering sending one to her, even though she’s long since given up trying to get me to bed at a decent hour.) Written in four-line rhyming stanzas, sweet, calming words are juxtaposed with hilarious exasperation and parental despair over another glass of water, the need for a teddy bear or a final bathroom trip. The clever cadences had me guffawing as I recited passages to every co-worker I could find. Should be in every parent’s library.

Summer concert series The city of East Lansing will kick off its annual outdoor Summer Concert Series, which brings seven weekends of live music to downtown East Lansing. Friday brings popular Lansing-based folk and old-time jazz performers Jen Sygit and Sam Corbin. Sygit is known for her mean mix of guitar, banjo and ukulele, while Corbin brings acoustic folk tracks with a sharp, modern edge. Saturday’s performer, Flatfoot, mixes rough-and-tough alt-rock with classic country, bringing dangerous-sounding roots rock arrangements. Using a collection of instrumentation that ranges from accordion to banjo to ukulele, they spit out rock ‘n’ roll with country and punk character. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for the event. » East Lansing Summer Concert Series Kick Off » 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 10 and 11 in East Lansing at Fountain Square on the corner of Albert and MAC avenues. If it rains, the concert will be canceled. » Free » For more information, go to www.cityofeastlansing.com/ summerconcertseries. Anne Erickson

Known in pop circles as Mr. “Barely Breathing,” Duncan Sheik is also a songwriter and musical composer of serious measure, and has the Tony awards to prove it. With this release of — you guessed it — cover songs from the ‘80s, he also proves he has seriously good taste in music. But how do his acoustic stylings compare to the originals? Unsurprisingly, not well. With covers of Japan and The Smiths, the content is beyond reproach. But Sheik’s disconcertingly mellow take on every tune aims for ethereal and winds up in Starbucks. Take his mishandling of Talk Talk’s lurching, vital “Life’s What You Make It.” In Sheik’s hands, the driving rhythm and commanding vocals are reduced to tinkling piano and whispery voices, robbing the tune of its surging power. I’m sure he has a solid record collection, but “Covers ‘80s” has little to recommend it to anyone but Sheik’s most reverent followers.

The Vixens are 4-2 in their 2011 season and are hoping to continue their three-bout winning streak. A portion of the ticket sales from the bout will be donated to Gateway Community Services. “They have such a wide array of services that they offer, but one of the things that they do is counsel and assist gay and lesbian teens,” said head coach Ryan Knott. “Given that June 11 is also Pride here in Lansing, we thought that was a nice tie-in.” At previous home bouts, the Vixens raised $1,000 each to donate to the Capital Area Humane Society and Eve Inc. “We pick a different (nonprofit) each time so we can spread the love around,” Knott said. » Lansing Derby Vixens » Saturday at the Lansing Center » Doors open at 6 p.m., bout starts at 7 p.m. » Ticket info: www.lansingderbyvixens.com

MGM (286 min. Not Rated)

I am no fan of how most studios treat genre films, tossing off barebone releases that barely pass muster then packaging and repackaging them in budget multi-disc collections. Hardly does many of the truly unusual and excellent films out there justice. But once in a while, a set is still worth a recommendation. Packaging three unique horror films for a budget price, this set delivers the eerie sci-fi masterpiece “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” the atmospheric, gruesome haunted fields of “Scarecrows” and the mindwarping, other-dimensional horrors of “From Beyond”. “Body Snatchers” is easily the best film of the trio and a genuine classic. But for my money, the gory, gloriously ‘80s “From Beyond,” ripe with beasties and hamfisted “Hellraiser”-esque psychosexual babble, is the most fun in the collection. Priced below $20, this set is a no-brainer for anyone who hasn’t already procured these three essential tales of terror.
