Weird Al’s new album out in June NOISE

“Weird Al” Yankovic has made a living for the past 20 years brilliantly trivializing the biggest musical hits, everything from arena rock to new wave to gangsta rap. Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Madonna — nobody is safe from his parodies. While Yankovic has kept a low profile the past few years, he’s back June 21 with a new album, “Alpocalypse,” and he’s heading out on a summer tour in support of the release. He will entertain Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on Friday. NOISE caught up with Yankovic to talk about the new album and why Lady Gaga almost didn’t let him parody her song. NOISE: Were you always funny? Yankovic: Well, it depends on your sense of humor. I guess I was always a little odd, which some people might find funny and some people might just find plain old

odd. I always stood out when I was in school. I don’t think anybody thought I was the funniest kid in class, though. I was always the weird kid. It took a while to develop my comedy. NOISE: Let’s talk about “Alpocalypse.” Is it hard to believe this is your 13th studio album? Yankovic: Yeah. But it’s what I enjoy doing. I’ve slowed down a bit. Back in the ’80s, I was putting out an album almost every single year, and now I have a lot of other stuff going on in my life. I’m touring more. I have a family life to consider, obviously. And I’m feeling a lot of internal pressure, meaning whenever I put out an album, now I want it to be more of an event. NOISE: You got the OK from Lady Gaga to release “Perform This Way,” after her team initially resisted any parodies. Were you relieved when her camp finally let you do the song? Yankovic: The bottom line is it had a very happy outcome. It turns out Lady Gaga was not aware any of

that was going on in the first place, and she loves the parody and the album is coming out, so it all worked out. NOISE: What should we expect from your Soaring Eagle show? Yankovic: This first leg of the tour is going to be pretty much like last year’s tour, except we’re doing “Perform this Way.” That’s because the album isn’t out yet: It comes out the 21st. This leg of the tour ends before then, so this isn’t quite the “Alpocalypse” tour yet. We’ll do a lot of new material, but in general, it’s all my greatest hits, a few random deep cuts from an old album and a pretty good sampling of the entire Weird Al collection.

KROGER GOING BPA-FREE If you shop at Kroger supermarket you are about to get one step closer to BPAfree shopping thanks to a proactive move by the chain to ban BPA from its canned foods and receipts. Cincinnati-based Kroger announced recently that in addition to making sure there is no BPA in the baby products it sells, the store is ridding the chemical from its store brand canned foods and purchasing BPA-free paper for its store receipts. Kroger spokesman Keith Dailey said the move was in response to customer feedback and emerging concerns regarding the safety of BPA. “While there is no conclusive scientific evidence that minimal exposure to BPA in can linings poses any risks to consumers, Kroger has begun

a process that we believe will result in the removal of BPA in the linings of canned goods in all of our corporate brand items,” he told the Columbus-Times Dispatch. “Customers are interested in the issue and what the company is doing on the issue.” Kroger’s move affects its private-label brands, which include Kroger, Value Brand, Private Selection, Comforts, Mirra, Active Lifestyle and Fresh Selections. Grocery store analyst David J. Livingston thinks Kroger’s move might encourage other retailers to take make similar changes. “This stuff could be perfectly safe, but if the customers think it’s not, then Kroger is making this move to keep them happy,” he said. — MCT News Service

Beer

Explore some new barely-and-hops brews

Latitude 48 Series

T O DD H A EF ER

BOSTON BEER CO., BOSTON, MASS.

www.samueladams.com; 6 percent APV The Boston Beer Co., known for its Samuel Adams brand, is one of the few craft breweries in the country with the ability to offer something like the Latitude 48 series. The specialty 12-pack features the same base India pale ale with a twist — two bottles each contain a different type of hop grown on the 48th parallel, and the sixth IPA is made with all five of the hops. The hops featured are Hallertau Mittelfrueh from Germany and East Kent Goldings from England and Ahtanum, Simcoe and Zeus from Washington’s Yakima Valley. Sampling a 12-pack called for help from fellow craft beer aficionados, so Mike Champion, Mark Maglior and I started out with the Ger-

beerman@postcrescent.com

man- and English-hopped samples, reasoning that their more delicate hops would be overwhelmed by the pine and grapefruit properties of the American hops. The Hallertau and Goldings hops did not fare well in the sampling. The Hallertauinfused beer was missing the wonderful spicy and floral hop flavor that is present in Samuel Adams lager on tap and the Goldings example lacked the tea-like properties I find in the best English ales. They both seemed to have a dull citrusy presence, with some additional grassy notes in the Hallertau, and were both lacking in hop aroma. My favorite of all the IPAs was the Simcoe, which was highly citrusy, but low in the piney taste, and this combination seemed to bring the

sweetness of the malt out the best. The Zeus was the opposite, very resiny with little citrus character, leaving a dry harshness in the aftertaste. The Ahtanum seemed to be a balance of the two properties and, like the Zeus example, was dry with a slight ending harshness. The actual Latitude 48 ale, containing all five of these hops, seemed unbalanced after sampling the ales with the individual hops, but Mike preferred it to the others. Mark sided with me in regards to the Simcoe ale. The Latitude series is a fantastic idea that anyone interested in hop varieties should sample. Samuel Adams is distributed in every state, and the Latitude 48 12-pack should be available through mid-June. Todd Haefer writes about beer for Gannett.

NOISE

Summer concert trends show lots of country, classic rock and pop

6 | NOISE

| lansingnoise.com

Music lovers are serious about their concert picks. They want blockbuster rock shows. They want twang-y, big country names. They want music fit for long, memorable nights under the stars. This summer’s concert schedule is packed with shows to please most tastes. Rock, country, rap, pop — it’s all there. The big three — DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Meadow Brook in Rochester Hills and the Palace of Auburn Hills — are offering high-profile rosters that include Maroon 5, Rihanna, Katy Perry, The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, Glee Live! and more. Jeff Corey, vice president of public relations for Palace Sports and Entertainment, which runs all three venues, sees a few trends this year, including a strong summer for classic rock and country, as well as a burgeoning number of pop performers. “Classic rock and country are two of the most popular genres with the most loyal followers, so I think you will see them well represented again this summer,” he said. “If there is any noticeable change from last year, it may be that there are a few more that fall somewhere in the pop music category, and they are

all at the Palace for some reason, including Glee Live! (June 13), Rihanna (June 14), New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys (June 16), Katy Perry (June 28) and Josh Groban (July 16).” As for sales trends, in line with the past few years, concertgoers are waiting until closer to the show to buy tickets. “This means fewer people are purchasing right when the show goes on sale and more people are purchasing closer to the show,” he said. “With the economic situation we’ve been through in Michigan, this

makes sense. In the big picture, by and large, the attendance for our shows has remained approximately the same, but it does affect how we market the concerts.” Major tours are a different story. Corey says those sell out quickly. “For the big, blockbuster tours, people will get their tickets early to avoid getting shut out,” he said. “That is always the case when Jimmy Buffett comes. His July 21 show at DTE Energy Music Theatre sold out the same day it went on sale.” “Believe it or not, one of the most popular shows of the summer is our early season Eddie Money show. It has become a tradition. Some years it is the first show of the summer, some years it isn’t, but it always kicks off the Memorial Day weekend and it is concertgoers first real chance to enjoy an outdoor show.”

‘Diabolique’

C R ITE R I O N CO LLEC TI O N

(117 min. Not Rated)

One of the most vexing decisions a DVD collector can face is whether or not to ‘double dip’ — purchase a second version of a film already owned — and the cruel folks with the storied Criterion Collection are some of the worst instigators. They routinely remaster and rerelease films, putting a strain on one’s patience and wallet. However, far more often than not, the double dip is worth it, as the new version is vastly improved and features new supplements. Such is the case with their new edition of Clouzot’s Hitchcockian “Diabolique.” Replacing the earlier, bare bones DVD, this newly mastered edition retains the soft hues while still looking sharp. Also included are a shortened video commentary and incisive essay booklet. A spellbinding, compelling murder mystery, “Diabolique” shows that Hitchcock wasn’t the only one who could masterfully pull of clockwork suspense.

Yuck YUCK

(Fat Possum Records)

Nobody told me that the mid-’90s are the new 2011, but I can’t say I disapprove. Neo alt-shoegazers Yuck dropped their gloriously noisy self-titled LP in February, and along with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, are proving that a healthy dose of Dinosaur Jr. and Smashing Pumpkins debt is owed. But more than just an homage group, Yuck stamp their music with a sense of youthful abandon and infectious sincerity. Lead-off track ‘Get Away’ is an immediate stand-out, wasting no time in bringing the squelching guitar and coolly detached vocal that turns into triumphant holler, and it could be the band’s calling card. The melodic lilt of ‘Shook Down’ and extended fuzzout drone of ‘Rubber’ leave the listener wondering what else this young group is capable of. A pristine example of the quiet-loud school of guitar pop, “Yuck” makes an early case for ‘Best of Year’ list consideration.

Television

Michael Scott’s exit tops season’s surprises Neil Justin MCT News Service

Stare at the small screen long enough, and television starts to become as predictable as a Swanson’s frozen dinner. Not that we’re knocking meatloaf and mashed potatoes, but sometimes it’s a pleasant surprise to pop open a box and discover a perfectly prepared smoked salmon. Of course, playing the Mystery Meal game has its risks, as you’ll discover when you peel back the tinfoil and come face to face with a mess of steamed turnips. Here are five from the 2010-2011 season I didn’t see coming: » Michael Scott’s poignant goodbye When Steve Carell announced his exit from “The Office,” I expected a goodbye as long, tedious and hammy as the end of a Wayne Newton performance. Instead,

the writers came up with some of the most heart-tugging moments of the show’s entire run, including a candlelit marriage proposal that appeared to be designed by the dream team of Jerry Lewis and Oprah Winfrey. The decision to have the once-egocentric Scott skip his own going-away party showed us just how far both the character and the show have come. » ”Glee” loses its grit Talk about your sophomore slumps. “Glee,” once a celebration of Broadway melodies, silly love songs and misfits, has lost its spirit, relying too much on hot musical artists, hot guest stars and hot bodies. It’s like the cast has suddenly become too cool for school. Most unforgivable of all: Turning Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester into Yosemite Sam. Let’s hope creator Ryan Murphy uses the summer break to get back to basics. » ”American Idol” stays on

top When Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez joined the gang, I predicted fawning critiques and bland stabs at humor. I was right. “Idol” resident grouch Simon Cowell is deeply missed. What I didn’t see coming Lopez was the finest field of talent in the show’s history. And the new judges deserve props for discovering them. It’s the voices on stage — not the ones on the panel — that kept “Idol” on top. » ”Running Wilde” runs amok Will Arnett reuniting with his “Arrested Development” boss Mitchell Hurwitz? Keri Russell as his tree-hugging love interest? What could go wrong? Everything, it turns out. “Running Wilde,” the

NBC UNIVERSAL

A scene from “The Office” episode titled “Goodbye Michael, Part 2.” most disappointing sitcom of the season, is proof that all the talent in the world doesn’t guarantee success — or laughs. Better luck next time, gang. » ”The Good Wife” gets great The drama with more twists than a Chubby Checker concert outdid itself late in the season with the revelation

that Kalinda (Emmy winner Archie Panjabi) once did the horizontal bop with her colleague’s hubby. Even more surprising — and it shouldn’t be — is that “Wife” continues to be one of the few straight-ahead dramas where the gals get most of the juicy lines without turning into lovesick surgeons or desperate housewives.

Cadillac Casket East Lansing-based Cadillac Casket rocks tough with a combination of metal, progressive and acoustic. While the four-piece spent their first three years playing in and around Lansing, since then, several members have moved to Chicago. Obviously, this makes rehearsals tricky and hometown shows sparse. But the guys play a special hometown show Saturday, May 28, at the Loft in Lansing. “The key to maintaining a band in two different states is staying in close communication,” guitarist Ben Warner said. “We rely on each-other to continue practicing on our own. New song ideas are sent via email and when we meet, we piece everything together. We’ll talk on the phone with each-other at least once a week.”

Warner is raring to get back with singer John Gapp, bass player Dustin Stoner and drummer Jake Greenwood and simply make music. “Personally, what I enjoy about creating rock music is the energy that it gives,” he said. “It’s a very ‘in your face,’ raw, loud, aggressive style of music. I’m not an angry person, and I don’t think it’s angry music, but it is a great way to get your blood flowing. “There is nothing more rewarding than to see some-
