Folk-pop with Okemos roots

Lord Huron’s 2010 EP, “Mighty,” plays like the backdrop to a group of outdoorsmen, gathered around the campfire, strumming and weaving melodic, folkpop songs. The title track brings together an assortment of percussion and world music sounds, and lead singer Ben Schneider’s evocative vocals carry it all to the next level. In just one year, Lord Huron — the brainchild of Okemos graduate Schneider — has gone from playing its debut show in California to booking one of the country’s biggest festivals, Chicago’s Lollapalooza, this August. Schneider checked in with NOISE to talk about the Los Angeles-based band’s Michigan roots and his gig Monday, May 2, at the Magic Stick in Detroit. NOISE: What are your first memories of making music? Schneider: I started when I was really young. My dad always had a guitar lying

Michigan. Mark and I have been playing since we were kids, and he knew Peter (Mowry, guitar) and Miguel (Sanchez-Briseno, bass, theremin) from childhood. Later, we hooked up with Brett (Farkas, guitar) in Los Angeles, and he just happens to be from Michigan. NOISE: Congrats on booking Lollapalooza. That’s huge! Schneider: Thanks. It’s one of those fests that has been around for so long. I went when I was a kid, and it’s so well-established. It will be great to play for people who might not get a chance to hear us otherwise. NOISE: You guys played SXSW in Austin this year. How was the experience? Schneider: It was fun and incredibly intense. We made the decision to play 10 shows in four days, so that’s a lot of running around ... We gave it our best, and I think good things will come out of it.

In middle school, I started playing with friends and in bands, and it’s funny, the drummer I first played with (Mark Barry) was the first drummer I played with in middle school. NOISE: Is it true you recorded this album completely on your own? Schneider: Yes, that’s right. NOISE: What instruments did you play? Schneider: Mostly guitar, keyboards, synthesized sounds, drums and some random items I had lying around. I used samples and sequences and a lot of guitar. I’m excited to record with a band on the next album, though. NOISE: You recorded the EP in Michigan, right? Schneider: Yes, most of it was recorded in Michigan. My folks have a place on Lake Huron, and my friends were getting married up North, so I had a week to hang out and see old friends and recorded at the cabin. NOISE: Tell me about the band’s Michigan roots. Schneider: We’re all from

‘Bloom County: The Complete Library, Vol. 4: 1986-1987’

BY BERKELEY BREATHED (IDW PUBLISHING)

I cannot tell you how giddy I am for the release of this collection, nevermind the fact that I already own everything it contains in the original paperback format, well used and well loved. The moment I discovered Bloom County, the hilariously absurd yet incredibly astute comic strip that perfectly punctuated the ‘80s, I was obsessed, wearing my Bill the Cat T-shirt til it literally began to disintegrate; listening to the scratchy floppy Billy and the Boingers LP single while reading and re-reading the strip collections until I had them memorized. This edition is especially dear to my heart because it contains my beloved Bill and his ne’er-do-well Boingers, a brash satire of the ‘80s hairmetal scene. Like all genius comics, Bloom County had an appeal to all ages — I adored it even when I didn’t recognize names like Caspar Weinberger, then enjoyed it on a deeper level when I went back to it as an adult.

The driving range at Forest Acres East Golf Course in Lansing was packed with golfers on a recent rainy afternoon. These dedicated golfers saw a spring rain in the forecast and chose to acknowledge only the first half — spring. 1

Have a bead on your ball. This sounds comically simple, but many novices neglect to keep tabs on their own ball in play. After you attempt to whack it, track it. This is extremely frustrating for playing partners and your wallet. Titlelist ProV1’s aren’t cheap. (As if.)

2

Stay off the short grass. Driving on tee boxes and greens is definitely frowned upon by most establishments. Seriously, if no one tells you this and you’re driving a golf cart for the first time: it can get you booted from a course. Trust me.

3 4

If someone offers you “Birdie Juice,” take it. Don’t ask any questions, just partake. Be ready to hit. When you pull alongside your ball (or dig it out of the woods), be

5

Forget the iPhone. There are a few situations where a cell phone just isn’t appropriate anymore. The doctor’s office, the movie theatre, the bedroom ... and the backswing. Shut the thing off and walk outside for a few hours. I promise, the device will not die without your ear and/or thumbs attached to it.

6

Know your audience. If you’re playing a nicer course, wear a collared shirt. If you’re asked to play in a golf outing, wear a collared shirt. Hell, if you’re confused about what to wear, wear a collared shirt.

7

Don’t assume anything. Even if you’re sporting the newest, shiniest sticks and the whitest, high-tech kicks — there will be a 62-year-old out there with Ben Hogan wooden woods, a bright green dealer visor and Jesus-like sandals that can beat the living snot out of you. Even if you can hit your drive 300 yards, there is a minx on the links that can pitch in

on every bunker shot and render your tee box bombs completely useless. Never assume you’re better than anyone. Until you see them swing. Then it’s fine.

8

Keep your own score. Some might opt to forego scoring at the outset of their golfing careers. I’ve always liked to keep a tally. It shows improvement over time, and occasionally, allows for bragging rights. I’m waiting for the day when I can frame a certain scorecard and gift it on Christmas. You know who you are.

9

Tip the beverage cart attendant. They’re not driving around because it’s fun. And if you want to see that cart again (and you DO), you’ll stuff a few extra bucks in the coffer. Also, don’t trick yourself into thinking that they’re enjoying being ogled. They’re not.

10

Shut your yap. Golf is a competitive and challenging sport ... but amateur play is all about the peace, quiet and pristine time spent on the course. It’s a break from work, traffic, cleaning, shopping: the blah blah blah of life. Take time to hit good shots, but take more time to enjoy the walk. Andi Osters, 28, is a Michigan State graduate.

COLLEGE FIELDS GOLF CLUB

Five years ago, when I bought a discount set of golf clubs (from a big-box store that shall remain nameless), I never imagined that it would lead to my most fervent hobby. Picking up the game of golf is more than swinging a piece of metal around. When I started, my knowledge of how to behave around the golf course extended no further than the beverage cart. Now, I’m able to share with you what I’ve learned — in no particular order.

ANDI O ST E R S

There are plenty of golf apps that try to match GPS with your 18 holes, but there’s a reason the folks at Apple included Golfshot in an iPhone commercial. It’s good. The app uses Google imaging to show you aerial views of the course, calculating distances for every stroke and includes a scorecard function. It’s available for $29.99 in the App store and is also available for Android phones. Go to www.golfshot.com for more information.

PGA TOUR

Never miss a stroke of favorite tournaments. This app includes live score updates from PGA events, plus player bios, course descriptions, video highlights and a schedule of upcoming tournaments. Find it free for your iPhone or Android phone. Search “PGA” in the App store or go to www.pgatour.com/iphone for more information.

MY GOLF SWING

This app promises to increase the consistency of your golf swing’s tempo. Set your ideal swing tempo and then practice from anywhere. The app includes presets that match the tempos of some of the sport’s best players. It’s good to be skeptical of anything that claims it can improve your swing, but for just $1.99 in the App store, it’s worth a try. Go to www.brightspark.com/ mygolfswing for more information and a demonstration video.

Dig country? Then you might want to take a listen to Brian Lorente and the Usual Suspects. The down home, rockin’ country guys will release their new CD, “2:45,” Saturday, May 7, and they’re doing some pre-release celebrating with two back-toback shows at the Whiskey Barrel in Lansing this Friday and Saturday. The guys recorded the twangy disc at Dimondale’s Epiphany Studio. Scott Owen (19 Wheels) produced the release, and East Lansing’s Glenn Brown later mastered it. Frontman Lorente has already shared the stage with some big country names — Gretchen Wilson, Uncle Kracker, David Allen Coe and Montgomery Gentry, to name a few — so catch ‘em before they blow up. As for summer plans, the band has gigs lined up at the Whiskey Barrel’s Birthday Bash, the Lansing Lugnuts’ Country Night, Grand Ledge Yankee Doodle Days, Detroit’s Hoedown, Charlotte Frontier Days and beyond. HOUSE OF BALLOONS (SELF-RELEASED)

This semi-mysterious R&B outfit has been annihilating Internet buzz for months, and garnered serious mainstream love (Drake and Donald Glover are fans), but do they live up to the behemoth-like buzz? In a word: Yes. More beautiful, twisted fantasy than Kanye, “House of Balloons” mines the dark side of R&B and hip-hop and the results are as intoxicating as the myriad substances rhymed about. Every track on “House” seems thick with drink, powder and clandestine encounters, smuggled into your ears via sputtering beats, indie-friendly sampler (Beach House, Siouxsie and the Banshees) and the smoothest voice you’ll hear this year. The album is one long highlight, but “The Morning,” with its Durutti Column-like guitar opening that swirls into a codeine-fuelled ballad with a singalong chorus, is my standout track. As menacing as it is melodic, “House” is a master class in contemporary R&B and expect to hear it from car windows all summer.

Flatfoot joins Fencemen for band’s debut show

Lansing-based The Fencemen makes its debut Friday at Mac’s in Lansing. The band consists of members of several notable area bands — Small Brown Bike, Charlevoix, Hawks and Snakes, to name a few. Band members are long-time friends, so working together was somewhat inevitable. “… Most of us have spent the better part of a decade (even more for some of us) together in some proximity,” vocalist Tyler M. Blakslee said. “… We are all older now and are more interested in collaborating in ways we never really had before ...” Friday’s lineup also includes Brooklyn-based Your Skull My Closet for their CD release show, East Lansing’s Hot Goss and longstanding Lansing rock-country group Flatfoot. Flatfoot is prepping to enter the studio next month to record their fifth album with Ann Arbor’s Jim Roll. “We’re going to take what we did with Wild Was Our Mercy and stretch it a little further,” Flatfoot guitarist and vocalist Aaron Bales said. “We plan to try a few new things like horns and also want more acoustic instruments in the mix. The record will still be very tight and high energy, and we’re really happy with the songs we have. I expect to see it out sometime in the fall.” » Flatfoot, The Fencemen, Your Skull My Closet, Hot Goss » 9 p.m. Friday, April 29 » Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave. » $8

Cult film trailer compilations, when curated well, provide near nonstop entertainment as well as whetting ones appetite for movies teased. Synapse Films (out of Novi) “42nd St. Forever” series are the high-water mark and must-see viewing for all genre fans. The wonderful trash mavens at Something Weird have their own trailer reel, and what it might lack in focus and flow, it more than makes up for in quantity and madness. As expected with a catalog of films as extensive as Something Weird’s, “Extra Weird” runs the gamut from blood horror to ’60s roughies, trashy sci-fi to skin flicks, and everything in between. Clocking in at more than three hours, you are guaranteed exposure to dozens of jaw-droppers you must see. And dozens you probably must avoid. Riotous, interest-piquing and perfect party background fodder at a bargain price.

Everyone’s budget is crunched these days, which is why 2 for $20 goes frugal this week — trying to find a meal for $6 or less out the door. Having a satisfying lunch doesn’t mean you have to shell out the big bucks.

THAILAND 401 E. Grand River Ave., Lansing, 372-8992 This popular, no-frills Thai restaurant in Old Town offers six lunch combinations served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $6, which includes white or fried rice, egg roll and a can of pop. Each menu item comes with its own picture and description, which makes it extremely helpful to those not as familiar with some of the food choices. The Pad Pa’ is a stir fry dish consisting of mushrooms, bamboo shoots and green beans with chicken and curry — a low spice level. If you’re looking for something more spicier, the Kang Kai is chicken, bamboo shoots and basil leaves in a hot curry with coconut milk. There are no plates or silverware here — it’s either Styrofoam or plastic, making it convenient to take home any leftovers. You might just end up wanting to dish out a few more dollars for extra egg rolls, however. They’re worth it.

WHAT UP DAWG?

127 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, 332-4696 Lunch specials at this Chinese-Korean restaurant cost no more than $5. Choose from a variety of main dishes. The combinations includes white or fried rice, egg drop soup and a crab rangoon. Chinese dish selections include the orange chicken ($4.75 at right), sweet and sour chicken, mongolian beef and more. The bulgogi ($4.25, at right) is a marinated beef dish, which in Korean means “fire meat,” for how it should be cooked — on an open flame. The meat is tender and very juicy, and has no spice. During lunch time, which goes on until 3 p.m., it’s a cafeteria-style service, so don’t forget to toss your trash.

317 MAC Ave., East Lansing, 351-3194 www.theyummydawg.com This new hot dog eatery recently opened in East Lansing, featuring cheap dogs and cheap beer. What more could you ask for? The setup is pretty simple: Order at the register and seat yourself at the “bar,” a stool near the window or a table/booth. TVs also are set up. The Chicago dog is $3.50 and comes with all the essentials: tomatoes, onion, pickle, sport peppers, mustard and relish. It’s one messy dog but will fill you up. The pickle could’ve been a little smaller, but the meat had a lot of flavor. Pair a hot dog with the house-cut fries — $1.50 for a small or $2.50 for a large, which is plenty enough to share for two. The eatery serves a variety of meats, including soy and chicken Viennas and dogs come on either a plain or poppy seed bun. You can even build your own, but prices vary.

307 S. Washington Square, Lansing, 482-2326 Come to this downtown restaurant for breakfast until 10:29 a.m. Monday through Friday, when all burrito and taco entrees are under $5. It includes eggs and hash browns. Try the sausage burrito on a flavored wrap for 60 cents more. Additional items like onions, however, are a little extra. But you still can’t beat the deal.

EAST LANSING — Over two decades ago, renowned golf course architect Jerry Matthews explored one of the most unique parcels of land in Lansing. Planted in the late 1940’s, this hilly, mature tree nursery also contained diverse marsh lands, and Clinton counties highest point (now the tee box on hole number 14).Along with his father, Michigan Golf Hall of Fame recipient, Bruce Matthews, they carved out one of the most beautiful, and challenging golf courses in the state Timber Ridge. The mature trees created a LJ-0100089197

challenge previously unknown in the Lansing area - tall tree lined fairways that severely punished players if they missed the fairway. In 1999, one of the worst wind storms in the County’s history snapped over 1,500 trees like toothpicks. The result was unexpected. Nature had found a way to somehow improve on the Matthews design. The course became more playable, yet still retained the beauty and seclusion that golfers had come to expect. Shortly after opening, Timber Ridge received national recognition as one of GOLF DIGEST’s “Top 5 New Public Courses”, and one of the “75 Best Public Courses in America.” But maintaining the course amid the heavy shadows of thick foliage became challenging and green consistency suffered. In 1999, new owners

emerged with a new message for players - “It’s about the golf.” They embarked on a substantial face-lift from course to clubhouse with remarkable results. Strategic sections of trees were removed and the green-care regimen included meticulous handmowing. Georgia pine straw replaced the dense underbrush `ju` pde]apu`no chusnba tuhha and resulted in increased playability and faster play as fewer players spent time hunting for their lost balls. In addition, the club house made changes to allow the players to enjoy a cool drink overlooking the panoramic views of the 18th green and the tees on numbers 1 and 10. To further enhance the entire golf experience, the owners brought in management experts QNorth Golf. The founder, long time Lansing resident

and golf fanatic, Quinn Smith ]en `_eno pd_ban fuie`neuepnr club house and restaurant offerings, re-trained every employee, and introduced the new QClub Membership cards that provide preferred pricing. This resulted in an even better golf experience on and off the course. As Timber Ridge became a community icon, it attracted more than just golfers. The unique and spectacular setting of the course has become a status symbol for upscale weddings. With facilities that accommodate over 200 guests, Timber Ridge hosts over 25 Lansing weddings each year. Timber Ridge has also bepdfn queaielga ]ba` pjdipn for charity golf outings. As the most iconic Lansing course, the owners have always felt it is important to give back to the community and host a large

number of Charity outings at the course every year. The owners and management claim they have no intention of resting. Maintaining this historic course icon is their top priority, and making the player experience better remains their mantra. Time will tell. But if the past 22 years has taught us anything about golf,

it’s that you can still pull off a win even after landing in the rough a few times. Timber Ridge has experienced more expected and unexpected change than any other course in Lansing’s history, yet has emerged as one of the most unique, beautiful, challenging, and memorable 18 holes in the state.

It’s finally here! The Lollapalooza 2011 lineup dropped today, and many are saying this, honestly, is the best collection of performers to ever play the fest. Good job, Perry Farrell. “As excited as I am to watch this year’s legends perform at Lolla, I am also feeling the enthusiasm for the younger groups who are just now breaking,” festival founder Farrell said, in a statement released to the press. “I take great delight in knowing that for the past 20 years we’ve given so many new artists a prestigious stage and a massive audience to play in front of.”
