What to do the day after Thanksgiving? Shop, of course. But after you’ve hit all the stores you can handle, head to An Evening of Smooth Jazz at the Holt Performing Arts Complex-Livensparger Theater to enjoy a night of soulful, pleasing jazz tracks. Smooth guitarist Tim Bowman headlines. His latest, funky single “Sweet Sunday” sat in the No. 1 spot on the Smooth Jazz chart for 12 weeks, and he’s the only smooth jazz guitarist to finish in Billboard’s 2009 Top 10. The lineup also features local jazz group 496 West and Lansing-based bassist Orrick Ewing. If you’re part of the local music community, it’s a given you know Meegan Holland. She earned a name booking national and local performers at the Creole Gallery in Old Town for years before tragedy struck and owner Robert Busby passed away in 2007, leaving the future of the gallery in question. After taking some time to mourn and gather her thoughts, Holland started bringing performers back to the Creole in September 2009. She began slowly, but now, she is back to booking regular gigs and even heads her own booking and promotions company: Small Things Productions. Holland’s latest show, featuring the MSU Professors of Jazz, takes place Sunday at the Creole. The remaining concerts in the series are Feb. 12, April 30 and Sept. 30. “I can’t resist booking bands that I respect, and my next three concerts certainly involve such bands,” Holland says. “I can’t book as
much as I used to, but I want to keep my hand in it.” This particular series was sparked by a grant the band received from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. “The point of the series is to have one of the professors compose a piece and then perform it publicly,” Holland explains. “The grant supports a partnership with Pattengill Middle School and with our series at Creole Gallery. It’s meant to expose young people, especially, to the idea that you can listen to music, you can play it — and you can actually create it.” As for the community’s response to bringing shows back to Creole, it’s overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve sold out every show since I came back to booking concerts in 2009,” she says. “It’s a testament to how much this community supports homegrown and touring bands, thanks to a long-standing tradition nurtured by the Ten Pound Fiddle, Elderly Instruments, MSU, various music festivals and of course, the people who are willing to leave their homes at night and come out to a concert!” When asked about the MSU Professors of Jazz, Holland calls them “stellar players, brought together by leader Rodney Whitaker, a

world-renowned bassist who also leads the MSU Jazz Studies program.” “I can’t say enough about how this band has raised the bar for jazz not just here, but around the region. Rodney has been especially good about taking the band’s music to Michigan communities,” she says. “The Creole is such a special venue. Yes, it has great acoustics, but there’s also a wonderful community vibe that’s almost palpable during concerts there,” she says. “It’s not just a musician playing in front of people. I often sit in the back or alongside the stage during concerts, and I watch how the audience and the performer engage each other. “I love the intimacy of small concerts, where on a really good night, everyone feels like they’re a part of creating something special.”

Maybe best known for the hit “Cruel to Be Kind,” Nick Lowe has been crafting romping, rockabillyflavored rock and touching ballads for decades. With 1994’s “Bird,” Lowe began his “Brentford Trilogy” and a late career renaissance, producing arguably his finest work. By mostly jettisoning the glam and swagger of his earlier work, Lowe dials in on what he does best: immaculate, heartrending balladry. As filtered through Lowe, these country-tinged takes on love and loss feel lived-in, but not blatantly so. He doesn’t push the delivery or oversell the emotion. It’s pure pop for real people. The album’s heart and highlight, “14 Days,” has him, resigned but maybe a little proud, walking away from a damaged relationship. But it feels like he could be walking away from a lot more than that. Flawlessly crafted and performed, “Impossible Bird” is a career highlight for Lowe and adult pop music at its finest.

Hey, kids, there’s a new music venue in town, and it’s called Blackened Moon. in fact. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such coordination in a bar before. Oak furniture matches the oak bar and oak wood paneling, framed art and well-positioned televisions hang from the walls. Baughman emphasized this by being the first bartender I’ve ever encountered who looks like she came directly from Talbots in her fashionable cowl neck sweater and gold hoop earrings. I learned that there’s no entertainment, there’s no really regular crowd, though out-of-towners are more common than locals. Friday is the biggest night, though they usually try to get out of there by midnight, and people mostly drink beer there. Labatt and Bud Light are on tap. Given the limited selection of draft beer and the $2 special on domestic bottles that coincided with my visit, I examined the Miller Lite “vortex bottle” I’d heard so much about. And I have confirmed its ridiculousness first hand. What were we talking about?

“Have you seen our bathrooms?” I was visiting Fool’s Gold Saloon in Webberville, and we were having a difficult time coming up with what makes the small bar on Grand River Road really special. By “we” I mean myself and the bartender Gwen Baughman, the daughter of owner Carol Stowe, who has owned Fool’s Gold for 22 years. The bathrooms were her suggestion. Indeed, I had been in the bathroom, and it was like no other bar facility I’d ever visited. A spacious, flowery smelling oneseater, the little room offered a cupboard full of bathroom necessities, a stately pig statue assists with the toilet paper, and the painted walls are adorned with smiling portraits of children of various ages. So assuming you’re cool with someone’s kids appearing to watch you do your business, I do indeed recommend stopping in the lovely restroom. The whole place fits the notable tidiness of the bathroom,

Students scurried around every inch of the commercial grade kitchen at the Capital Area Career Center last week to prepare a massive Thanksgiving menu. Kyle Mitchell, 26, is in his first year as the lead instructor for the culinary arts program. He said cooking for 200 was “no sweat” but the sheen on his brow suggested otherwise. Mitchell’s class collaborated with Trinity Church to feed a cafeteria full of Lansing residents a hearty Thanksgiving meal at Bingham Elementary on Nov. 18. Trinity picked up the grocery bill and Mitchell and his students prepared 10 turkeys weighing 20 pounds each, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, cloverleaf rolls, cranberry sauce and a cream cheese frosted pumpkin cake. “It’s a good 15-hour day for me,” Mitchell said. About 45 students take part in the culinary arts program, available to juniors and seniors who attend one of the 11 area high schools affiliated with the career center. Many of the students volunteered to stay after their regular class hours to make sure the Thanksgiving meal was finished in time. “This aligns with real world,” said assistant instructor Gina Schmidt. “It’s intense.” Shelby McAlister’s neon pink hair peeked out from her chef’s hat as she sliced carrots and passed them to a classmate so they could be paired with green beans and tied into bundles with blanched leeks. “I didn’t really know what I was doing after school, so this is putting me in a direction,” McAlister said. In the staff cafe adjacent to the school’s kitchen, several students took a quick lunch
break, eyes glued to a television tuned to the Food Network as celebrity chef Tyler Florence seasoned a turkey. Career Center principal Jeffrey Bohl credits the popularity of the Food Network for ensuring the culinary arts program continues to fill to capacity each semester. “That program is pretty much maxed,” Bohl said. “(Food Network) has brought the joys of that work area and that career path into people’s homes so they understand it at a different level.” Mitchell’s love for food came from his grandmothers’ cooking, but his technical skills came from a career center similar to the one where he now teaches. His goal isn’t just for his students to learn knife skills, but also work on customer service and interviewing skills. Students will start serving more meals at the staff cafe after Thanksgiving weekend. Next year, the second year students will be in charge of running the cafe. “They’re going to have to do the inventory, they’re going to have to come up with the menu, price out the menu, and oversee the first years as they’re doing production for it,” Mitchell said. “When they walk out they’ll be able to do entry level jobs for sure. Going into college, they should have a few classes underneath their belt.” He hoped the community service project will also help his students see what culinary arts are all about. “You have a chance to make an impact on everyone’s life that you encounter,” Mitchell said. “Somebody could come into the restaurant and have the worst day of their life. You give them good service, good conversation, they leave with a full belly. You just completely brighten their day, turn it around, they walk out with a big smile on their face.”

It’s hard to beat a hot turkey sandwich on the day after Thanksgiving, but here are three ideas to spice up your extra helpings of turkey so they won’t feel like leftovers.
TURKEY AND MASHED POTATO CROQUETTES
FILLING • 2 cups minced turkey • 1 cup mashed potatoes • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 clove garlic, minced • 4 tablespoons flour • 1/4 cup chicken broth • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 teaspoon salt
INGREDIENTS: • 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons chutney • 3 to 4 teaspoons curry powder, to taste • 1/4 cup celery, chopped • 1/3 cup raisins • 1 tablespoon chopped green onion • 2 tablespoons chopped pecans • 1 cup diced turkey PREPARATION: Combine mayonnaise, curry powder and chutney. Combine celery, chopped raisins, green onion, pecans and turkey. Stir in the curried mayonnaise. Serve on greens or as a sandwich filling.
TURKEY AND SPINACH QUICHE
INGREDIENTS: • 1 9-inch pie shell • 3/4 cup chopped spinach • 2 tablespoons chopped onion • 1 tablespoon butter • 3/4 cup chopped turkey • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese • 3 eggs • 1 1/4 cups half-and-half • 1 teaspoon curry powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt
PREPARATION: Cook spinach and onion over medium low heat stirring frequently, until tender. Spread spinach, onion, turkey and cheese in the pie shell. Beat eggs, half-and-half, curry powder, and salt in bowl. Pour over turkey and spinach mixture. Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Reduce heat to 325 degrees and continue baking for about 20 minutes. Source for recipes: Adapted from recipes found at www.about.com

CURRIED TURKEY SALAD
PREPARATION Combine turkey, mashed potatoes, parsley, and black pepper in a bowl. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add flour and stir until blended. Stir in chicken broth and milk. Stir for 2 minutes. Add salt to taste. Combine with turkey mixture. Refrigerate for about two hours. Put 1/2 cup of flour in a plate. Beat eggs in a bowl with 1 tablespoon of water. Put finely ground bread crumbs in another bowl. Shape croquette mixture into 1 inch balls. Roll in the flour to coat, then in the egg. Coat with bread crumbs. Place on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Heat oil to about 360°. Fry the balls for about 2 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve with cranberry sauce.

Three steps to taming Lions Penn State poses a threat to Spartans’ slice of Big 10 crown
Three months ago, as the leaves began to turn and students began to crowd our summertime solace, how many of us knew that our Spartans would be 10-1, ranked in the top 10 in the nation, and playing for a share of the Big Ten title in the final game of the 2010 season? If your hand is raised, I hope you bought a crap-ton of lotto tickets back in August, too — and are now wealthy enough to fly us all to the New Year’s Day bowl game MSU is hopefully destined to play in. I can tell you that I had notions of predictive grandeur in late August: to the tune of ... oh, let’s call it a 9-3 record. (It was really 8-4. Shhhh.) But we of little faith have been reminded, week after week, of the cockroach-like ability of State to just keep coming back. Seriously. Last week, after playing three quarters like a pack of zombies, MSU came back in the final frame to beat Purdue by four. It was a heart-stopping methodic madness that turned a loss into a tenth win, and broke many a Boilermaker’s spirit in the process. This weekend, we travel to Happy Valley to play the Nittany Lions on their Senior Day for a share of the Big Ten title. Talk about a hostile environment — I feel like our fans should wear HazMat suits if they plan to attend the game. Penn State will be looking for a state-

ment game to end their season, and dashing hopes of our first Big Ten title in 20 years would do just that. A few game notes for this weekend? Sure. Glad to oblige: First, it’d be great if MSU came out and decided to play to their potential from the first snap, instead of after the bands play at halftime. If we get down early in this one, PSU has the defensive schemes to stuff us for the rest of the game. Score early. Second, our offensive line has got to protect Kirk Cousins to prevent that extremely annoying habit of his: hurling ducks off of his back foot. I can’t think of an interception he’s thrown this season that happened when he threw it from the 5-step drop. However, when Cousins gets happy feet, the football ends up in the hands of a guy wearing the wrong jersey. Third, exploit the youth. (This probably applies to other areas, but let’s stick with football for now.) PSU is talented, but raw around the edges. They’re a young team with young leaders — we are an experienced group with tested leaders. If this game is close: look for the latter to rise to occasion. It’s the time of year to know what you’re thankful for, and I can say quite honestly that I’m loving writing about a winning football program. It is a LOT more entertaining that writing about losses; as evidenced by my transparent lack of Lions pieces. Enjoy the game this weekend, and don’t forget to root for Michigan (if you can stomach it) to beat Ohio State. It’d also be great if Northwestern gave Wisconsin a sound whooping. Stars have aligned before ... it could happen.

Drawing heavy influence from Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182, pop-punk outfit Amely started as a studio project for lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Petie Pizarro, who recorded his own EP in Jacksonville, Fla., before going the band route. He soon added bass player Patrick Ridgen, drummer Nate Parsell and guitarist Brandon Walden to round out his energetic pop-punk sound and named the group, Amely. Denied a respectable DVD release for far too long, Charles Laughton’s classic tale of good vs. evil is finally done justice by the storied Criterion Collection, presenting the film in a gorgeous transfer, and piled with informative, captivating supplements. The unforgettable story of a killer preacher (Robert Mitchum) with “Love” and “Hate” tattooed on his knuckles who will stop at nothing to uncover a hidden fortune protected by two young children, “Hunter” is a haunting, tense morality tale that is as much art film as it is mystery thriller. Criterion’s treatment of film is the first thing noticed, and the transfer alone is worth the price of admission. With shadows so essential to the mood and atmosphere, the rich blacks seen finally summon the full grim, yet poetic oppression of the film.
