Our pop culture experts tell us what’s on their radar

BY M I C H A E L L A R G O (HARPER PAPERBACKS)

I’ve grown to consider Michael Largo the king of toilet-time story-time. His encyclopedic anthologies have covered such unusual subjects as the many ways in which a person can meet her end (“Final Exits: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die” and “The Portable Obituary: How the Famous, Rich, and Powerful Really Died”) and the historically obvious connections between artistic creativity and a life of excess (“Genius and Heroin”), but his newest collection is my favorite yet. “God’s Lunatics” is an A to Z of the fantastic, scandalous and downright bizarre found within the history of religion, exploring self-proclaimed prophets of sexual abandon, notorious religious figures and strange spin-off sects alongside more unusual aspects within the history of mainstream religions that have shaped the way modern cultures function today. While a perfect book for quick-tempo, episodic reading (you can easily pick it up for a few minutes at a time), I actually found myself sucked into reading it for a stretch of some hours.

365 new dresses for $365 in 365 days. That’s the happiness goal of sorts Marisa Lynch set for herself when, just months before her 30th birthday, she got laid off. Losing a job means hitting the streets with a resume to some, wallowing in grief for others. But for Marisa, it meant getting the sewing machine out and upcycling thrifted fashions. Every day. “I was just in this not-feeling-good, crummy kind of mood, and I didn’t know how to kick it,” says Marisa. That’s when Marisa saw “Julie & Julia.” “(Julie) was finding something to do every day that made her feel great. I was jealous. I thought, I want to find that.” Thus, New Dress A Day (newdressaday. wordpress.com/) entered the blogosphere. The task: To make a new fashion piece a day — on a budget of a dollar a day — for an entire year. Think the uber-frugal budget and tight turnaround requirements can only mean shoddy, unfashionable duds? Not for Marisa. All you have to do is take a quick glance at New Dress A Day to see that while this West Hollywood resident may be short on money and time, she’s never short on style. She’s also got an imaginative fashion sense, serious sewing skills, and some awe-inspiring powers of transformation. In each of her daily posts, Marisa shares the story _ and impressively fugly before photo _ of an old vintage dress found at a thrift shop or garage sale. Then comes the chic and cute after photo _ along with details of where she wore the newagain outfit and how it was received. Earlier this month, for example, Marisa took a somewhat frighteninglooking blue gown reminiscent of a Disney magician’s suit, and transformed it into a cool blue shirt perfect for her outing to a Dodgers game! Always a fan of thrift stores, Marisa says she loves the “romanticism of wearing clothes from earlier time.” Marisa grew up seeing her mom — a home economics major in college — sewing things around the home, then learned to sew herself in a home economics class in seventh grade. Though she didn’t sew often, she did carry a DIY purse to her prom, made for just $4 using directions from a Sassy magazine.

World Cup’s draw is about more than plastic noisemakers

A NDI O S T ER S

If you read that headline and were excited to hear yet another sports columnist babble about what a travesty the sport of soccer is … you’re going to be disappointed. I’m not going to follow in the footsteps of ESPN’s Rick Reilly, who essentially wrote a satire piece last week about all the things the world could do to improve his soccer viewing experience. So you’re sick and tired of calling people and hearing the vuvuzelas in the receiver. The “buzz” everyone is both hearing and speaking of is about as pleasant on the eardrum as Jim Carrey’s mind-tingling “most annoying sound in the world” from Dumb & Dumber. I understand. I’ve heard you whine about it for two straight weeks. I love hypothetical situations, so let’s conjure one up. Imagine if the entire nation of … oh, let’s say France (just on spec), decided to watch the Super Bowl on television. Then, let’s say the entire nation of France decides to boycott the use of “terrible towels” by Pittsburgh Steeler fans by opining in print and spouting off on television news channels. Let’s (hypothetically, remember!) say that the reason for their extreme dismay is because the level of distraction that a spinning towel represents in hi-def is ruining their viewing experience. Do you know what Americans would

Oh, those vuvuzelas! ostersan@gmail.com

tell France to do? I can tell you with absolute certainty that my editor won’t allow it through if I were to type it. I simply cannot spend any more of my life hearing about how a 2-foot horn is ruining such a spectacular global event. The World Cup is being hosted by South Africa, a nation which has spent more time, money and effort on the sport of soccer in the last 5 years than any fair-weather cubicle-dwelling video-streaming bandwagon fan. While we lounge on ergonomic Ikea furniture, sip Biggby coffee, and waste thousands of collective office hours while streaming ESPN3’s live feed from Johannesburg — citizens elsewhere are huddled with entire village populations around one tiny pub television, hoping for a glimpse at the screen and even more for a W from their team. It is my one hope that all soccer fans, U.S. and otherwise, embrace the spirit of the World Cup for the final knockout stage of the tournament. That spirit is one of unity — and I can tell you no amount of ambient noise would deter me from wanting to be a part of it. Vuvuzelas or not: the World Cup is about acceptance, pride, class, and dignity. Trouncing another nation’s tradition doesn’t give anyone a good feeling about us. I mean, we’d hate to be the next France. So while we’re all enjoying the event from afar — if your sensitive side head holes can’t take a little hum from your flat screen … turn it down.

What activity fits a warm June day in Michigan? A summer festival, of course. The fest season is going full-speed now. This weekend, it’s the annual Festival of the Sun and Moon on the corner of Turner Street and Grand River Avenue in Lansing’s Old Town. The two-day festival is the Old Town Commercial Association’s big-

gest fundraiser of the year. “We’re continuing with the revitalization of Old Town, and that’s our main focus,” Festival Director Lindsey Dubey says. “It’s about anything we can do to make Old Town thrive and bring people to these great businesses.” Friday’s Festival of the Moon, in its eighth year, offers fun for the 21 and over crowd. A ticket includes a souvenir pint glass and two tasting

tickets, with plenty of beer tasting options. As usual, Bell’s Brewery will be there. This year, it unveils two new brews at the fest. Also on hand: The Lansing Derby Vixens, one of Lansing’s roller derby leagues, skating around, selling drink tickets. Saturday’s Festival of the Sun, going on 11 years, is for all ages. Impression 5 Science Center will have activities for the kids. For big kids, there’s wine tasting. The cost of admission includes a complimentary wine glass and two tasting tickets. Catering to different crowds on different days helps attract larger numbers to the fest. “With the Friday night crowd, the bands are louder and more rock-oriented for a younger, college-age crowd,” Dubey says. “Saturday, it’s fun for the whole family.” Sample food from local restaurants and catering businesses both days, including Vernadine’s Soul Food (Friday), Grand Traverse Pie Co. (Saturday) and Aloha Piilani’s (Saturday). Also view sculptures from Old Town’s second annual Scrapfest: a “green” contest in which local artists had an hour to collected recycled materials and the following week to create a sculpture using those materials. Musical performers range from pop-rocker Cartel to homegrown bluegrass favorite Steppin’ In It. Cartel, Dubey says, is the biggest act ever booked for the fest: “We’ve had large acts before, but we’re anticipating the biggest crowd because of Cartel.” A two-day pass runs $25, with single day tickets available. (See information at right for the cost breakdown.) Additional tasting tickets run $1. Dubey hopes the festival gets the word out on the great shops and businesses in Old Town. “It’s great to have people come to Old Town and experience all the services available right here,” she says. “It’s exciting to come to a new part of Lansing, and once people visit, they realize everything Old Town has to offer.”

Bike tires, busted waffle irons and a hefty dose of elbow grease are all part of the sculptures taking shape in Fred Hammond’s metal working shop in Old Town. His team is one of 16 creating art from junk metal and other found objects for Old Town’s second annual Scrapfest. The artists had just one hour at Friedland Industries on June 12 to choose raw materials from mounds of recyclables and then two weeks to finish their pieces, which will be on display Friday and Saturday during the Festival of the Moon and the Festival of the Sun in Old Town. Hammond said there are two Scrapfest strategies. “One is to go in with an idea and try to find the pieces that will fit your idea,” he said. “The other strategy is find the cool stuff in the yard and make something out of that.” Hammond is sharing his workspace and tools with a team from Ciesa Design, led by creative director Chris

Across town, the Full Metal Tactics team welded, hammered and sawed its hodge podge of scrap metal in a makeshift backyard workspace. Brad Ellsworth, one of the team’s members, said he’s grateful for the extra week — and his neighbors will be, too. In 2009, artists only had one week to complete their work. “Last year, we were working right til we took it there,” Ellsworth said. “(We were) grinding until 3 or 4 in the morning.” Judging and an auction of the finished pieces will be Saturday at Festival of the Moon.

Cartel ‘Cycles’ to Old Town The musician’s life is a gamble. Sometimes it’s hard to know what opportunities to take and which direction to go with your art. The guys of Cartel have faced a few of those nail-biting decisions. When MTV came to them in 2007 and asked them to star in a reality series called, “Band in a Bubble,” they had to think. The premise of the series was a behind-the-scenes look at a band recording its new album. The catch? The guys had to live in a 2,000-square foot bubbleshaped building for 20 days, with every aspect of the recording process — and their lives — on tape. In the end, the guys said, “yes,” and lead singer Will Pugh feels good about that decision. “We took it as an opportunity to put ourselves out there in a way not many people have and increase our exposure to the public,” he said. “We felt it was a good thing, and we’re proud of that record. “It was more of a spectacle than anything else, but

South,” a song based on their Southern hometown. “It originally wasn’t even going to be a Cartel song, but everyone grew into it, and now it’s kind of an anthem from where we’re from,” Pugh said. On the current single, “The Perfect Mistake”: “Lyrically, it doesn’t have any actual experience attached to it. It was written from a vicarious standpoint,” Pugh explained. “It’s from a guy’s perspective ... about getting a relationship back on track.” As for life on the road, Cartel is a pro. The guys have toured six years, and while it doesn’t get any easier, they know what to expect. “... I’ve always been a homebody, so leaving the house and wife and dog is the tough part,” Pugh said. “But having experience touring makes the process a lot more automatic. It’s not new, by any means.”

it was fun. It was basically a mini-series trying to document the process of a band making a record in an unusual circumstance. Sure, if we had to do it again, there are some things we would have changed. But you can say that about anything in life.” Cartel, which headlines Festival of the Moon in Old Town on Friday, got together in Atlanta in 2003 on the California indie label The Militia Group. The group released an EP in 2004 and a debut CD, “Chroma,” in 2005, and through lots of touring and activity on social networking sites, the band racked up 36 million MySpace plays and signed to Epic Records. Now inked to Wind-Up, Cartel has a new album out, “Cycles.” When it came to recording the new album, the guys had a full year to work on material — and they took it. “We took about a year and a half to just write the album,” Pugh said. “That’s the most time we’ve ever taken. Our EP was done in 5 days, our first record in 21 and our second album in about 30 days.” The result? A collection of anthemic emo-punk, with layers of guitars, wild dynamic shifts, big hooks and earnest lyrics. The band’s going favorite on the album is “Deep

Explore some new barley-and-hops brews

ZATEC DARK LAGER

Do my eyes deceive me? According to the label of Zatec Dark Lager, the brewery has existed since 1004! That predates the Crusades, William the Conqueror and Twitter! However, like many historical claims, the actual truth strays far from the statement. According to Zatec’s website, the existing brewery has only been around since 1800. The city of Zatec did have a brewery established in 1261 and there are records of brewing taxes being levied as far back as 1004, which apparently is the basis for the claim. There is no denying that the area has a long tradition of quality brewing. The cultivation of Saaz hops — still among the best in the world — and a climate and soil favorable to growing barley made the region (generally known as Bohemia back then) famous for beer even by medieval times. Zatec Dark Lager is being imported for the first time into the U.S. and it’s a welcome addition to the ranks. Just last week, a reader asked me what a good alternative to Heineken Dark would be. Zatec

would fit the bill nicely. It pours a deep, dark brown with a tan, rocky head, and a heavy cascade of bubbles started making its way up the pilsner glass as soon as it was filled. The aroma was toasted grain and grassy hops. The taste has aspects of chocolate and caramel malt bordering on toffee, and the beer’s profile seems to have more in common with the pilsner style than regular lager — slightly bitter and dry throughout the taste and the aftertaste. This helps limit the sweetness of the malts and provides a clean finish. I was hoping for a bit more of the Saaz hop character in the flavor, although it did make more of an appearance as the beer warmed a few degrees in the glass. All in all, this was a very drinkable dark lager with a bit of oomph to it at 5.7 ABV.

WOODY’S OASIS BAR AND GRILL

After several weeks of shenanigans in East Lansing, I decided last week to chill out, so my buddy Weaver and I went to Woody’s Oasis and hit the patio. The Summer Solstice Jazz Festival was going on, providing ample opportunities to people-watch. If you’re into great Mediterranean food, be it meat, vegetarian or vegan, then Woody’s is probably already on your radar. If you want to wash that down with an adult beverage, then the only location to do that is the Grand River Avenue location, offering a full bar, 32 bottled beer choices and 20 taps — 18 of which are microbrews, 12 being from Michigan. If you’re into the whole “buy local” thing, manager David Mitchell said their burgers are made from local beef. “We also make some great Bloody Marys, which are $3

need to partake, is the Cocaine Lady: a mix of Amaretto, vodka, Bailey’s and cream with a splash of Coke. David assures me it takes like a malt. Woody’s has been around for 10 years now, but I never knew it had a bar until two years ago. Every time I’ve been there, normally after dark, there have been several tables pulled together with large parties chatting and laughing. The music via an iTunes playlist gives it a living room feel. Woody’s has always been off my beaten path, yet every time I go there, I’ve always had a great time catching up with friends. There are no pool tables, no darts, no arcade games or jukebox; just great food, beer and friends from Around The World.

About five years ago, one of the bartenders created a delicious mixture of Stoli Raspberry, Blueberry, Strawberry and Peach vodkas, added a splash of cranberry and a splash of Red Bull and named it “Around The World.” That’s four full shots of vodka for $8 — $2 a shot — a great value for a Know of a bar we should feature? THE SCENE

Inside, it was considerably darker. The restaurant attracts the downtown business workers, as it’s more upscale. There was a plate of sweet potato chips that were crunchy, sweet and had a hint of cinnamon. We munched on those right away. I would’ve ordered a side of it if they offered it.

The sandwiches come with a hot or cold side, which includes nontraditional items like tomato and mozzarella salad, homemade applesauce and sweet pea salad. I got the open-faced tuna melt ($7.95) — housemade tuna salad with melted white cheddar on grilled whole wheat bread from Great Harvest. I chose a fruit salad as my side.

Melissa had the Tavern burger ($10.95) — blackened sirloin cooked medium, American cheese, lettuce, red onion and grilled brioche, with a secret sauce. The burger comes with fries and a pickle. My sandwich was fresh and flavorful. It was essentially one half of a sandwich but it was more than filling. Melissa had a difficult time keeping the burger together — and finishing it. ‘U2 360 at the Rose Bowl’

INTERSCOPE RECORDS (131 MINUTES, NOT RATED)

Though its sure-to-bemonumental stop at Spartan Stadium has been postponed, you can gawk at the spectacle that is a U2 show with this new DVD from its 2009 gig at the Rose Bowl. Live, U2 rarely does “intimate,” instead relying on the audience to find the personal within its massive sights and sound, and this tour is no different. Playing in the round, underneath a behemoth claw structure, the group surges through a selection of tracks from its near-masterpiece “No Line on the Horizon,” as well as a familiar but no less dazzling array of crowd favorites such as “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “One.” The concert highlight is undoubtedly the revival of “Ultraviolet,” a yearning, powerful number and the best track off “Achtung Baby,” which had not been played in more than 15 years. With its mammoth visuals and tremendous sound, “U2 360” needs to be experienced. But until Bono and Co. return to U.S. soil, this exhilarating DVD will have to do.

Grilled salmon cooked on a wooden plank.

Try fish on the grill LisaAbraham | MCTNewsService

Move over burgers, step aside chicken; if you want to grill something that’s truly fast food, consider the fillet over the filet mignon. Many cooks forget fish when they pull out their grills, favoring the traditional beef and pork. But grilling fish produces fillets that are so flaky and flavorful, you won’t think twice about missing the beer batter or the deep frying. Grilled fish is healthy — virtually fat-free save a small brushing of oil or butter to keep it from sticking — and cooking it on wooden planks can add deep flavor without increasing the calories. Karen Adler and Judith Fertig, a cooking duo from Kansas known as the BBQ Queens, said plenty of cooks, particularly landlocked Midwesterners, overlook fish when it comes to grilling and are surprised to learn how easy it is. Adler and Fertig have written more than 20 cookbooks mostly on grilling and barbecuing, including the newly released “Techniques for Grilling Fish and Techniques for Planking” ($12.95 each, Harvard Common Press). The pocket-sized books are full of essential information for learning about grilling fish. “I think the easiest way to grill fish is to plank it,” Adler said. Planking, or cooking on a plank of aromatic wood that has been soaked in water, helps to keep fish moist and eliminates the need to turn the fillet over, so sticking isn’t an issue. Fish on a plank cooks via indirect heat, off of direct flames. It’s important to soak the plank in cold water for at least an hour before putting it on the grill so that the wood doesn’t burn during grilling. Planking comes in handy for very thin fillets of lake fish, such as perch, which can fall apart when grilling. When it’s done cooking, the fish can be served directly from the plank, she said.

PLANKED SALMON WITH MUSTARD-MAYODILL SLATHER 1 salmon fillet, ¾-inch thick, skin removed (1 ½ to 2 lbs.) 1 cedar or alder grilling plank, soaked in water for at least 1 hour FOR THE SLATHER: ½ cup Dijon mustard ½ cup mayonnaise 1 tsp. chopped fresh dill 1 clove garlic, minced Zest and juice of ½ lemon Prepare an indirect fire in a grill, with a hot fire on one side and no fire on the other. To make the slather, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Compare the length of the plank with the length of the salmon fillet and trim the salmon to fit the plank, if necessary. Place the salmon on the prepared plank and spread the mustard slather over the top. Place the plank on the grill grate on the no-heat side. Cover the grill and cook until the fish begins to flake when tested with a fork in the thickest part, 25 to 30 minutes. Serve the salmon hot, right from the plank. Makes 6 servings. —”Techniques for Grilling Fish” Karen Adler and Judith Fertig
