You would think that after playing hits like “Iris,” “Name” and “Black Balloon” for 20-plus years, The Goo Goo Dolls lead singer Johnny Rzeznik would be tired of it. But, not so. “Those are the songs people
know the most and they seem to connect to the most,” he says, chatting on a rare day off. “Because we wrote those songs, we’re able to make a living doing what we love to do.” The Goo Goo Dolls, who headlines DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston on Sunday, has enjoyed 17 top-10 singles and sold nearly 9 million albums (“Dizzy Up the Girl,” “Gutterflower”) over the course of its career. “Iris” is the band’s big breakthrough: The starry-eyed, modern day classic launched The
Goo Goo Dolls all over alternative rock radio. The making of the band’s latest album, “Something for the Rest of Us” (out August 31), was more hands-on than past ones. For starters, the guys had a major hand in the production of the disc — a first. Musically, The Goo Goo Dolls’ signature infectious guitar hooks and swelling choruses are still there, but the stories are a little different. Rzeznik found himself writing about “what happens to people emotionally during hard times and

Outside of a devoted cult fanbase in the States, The Housemartins are best known as Norman Cook’s (Fatboy Slim) pre-electronic days band. But with their post Smiths, highly literate jangle pop, the Martins deserve to be remembered as more than a trivia tidbit. Like their more famous, Mancunian peers, the Martins wrote lyrically subversive and cerebral songs, and wrapped them in upbeat, almost jaunty musical arrangements full of melodic guitar pop. But where the Smiths relied chiefly on Morrissey’s tunes of relationship and identity struggles, the Martins were class warriors, penning thinly veiled anthems raging against the treatment of the working class. The highlights are many, but the stirring “Sitting on a Fence” resonates both musically and lyrically. The album breezes by swiftly, but the melodies and lyrics stick with you, keeping you humming and thinking. There is no shortage of unsung Britpop bands, and now you can add the Housemartins to the list of must-hears.

Frank and Earnest
Frank and Earnest is set to release its debut album, “Old Francis,” on Friday at Mac’s Bar, and the band is bringing honest, energy-packed indie rock to the effort. “We are who we are, and we are honest with how we feel and where our emotions are coming from,” says singer and guitarist Ben Hassenger, who along with Ryan Horky (drums), Otis (guitar and vocals) and Paul Wittmann (bass and vocals) make up Frank and Earnest. Hassenger chatted with NOISE about the new album, produced by local musician Tommy McCord (The Plurals/GTG Recordings). NOISE: Why the name Frank and Earnest? Hassenger: Otis came up with the moniker from the comic strip of similar name. The characters in the strip, Frank and Ernest, were adapted from the phrase of being “Frank and Earnest,” and we simply brought the phrase back to its original origins of being honest and to the point. NOISE: What really stands out to you on “Old Francis?” Hassenger: We’re honestly pretty proud of the entire package. We all had a say in the track listing, recording, artwork (done by local artist Craig Horky)— everything… It is a clear and accurate representation of the band. NOISE: What do you love about playing in Frank and Earnest? Hassenger: Being onstage and just getting lost in the songs and emotions. I can’t speak for everybody in the band, but I know that when I get on the stage, everything that triggered our songs comes rushing out when we play, and each show takes on a new meaning. Great meal in green environment You wouldn’t really know it, but The Draft House in DeWitt is one of the “greenest” restaurants around. Three years ago, it became the first mid-Michigan business to meet the standards of the Green Restaurant Association. Some of the changes include using products made out of recycled material, serving fair-trade certified coffee and no longer using Styrofoam. Not only is their food great, but you feel a little better about eating there.
THE SCENE
The Draft House isn’t too big, so the tables and booths were packed. The restaurant, with a Western theme to it, is dim and feels cozy. You can tell the place gets a lot of regulars.

The BBQ chicken pizza ($8.50) is a 9-inch thin crust with shredded BBQ chicken, red onion and jack and cheddar cheese. my judgment may have been clouded or everything really did sound good. I’ve heard the burgers are a must-try (along with the olive sauce), and there are also Mexican entrees, sandwiches and a variety of appetizers. On the waitress’ recommendation, I went with the Cajun chicken pasta ($10.25). It came with a side salad and garlic toast. Melissa went with the spe-
cial of the day: a personal BBQ chicken pizza ($8.50), which came with a side salad. The generous portion of pasta comes with sliced chicken breast with sauteed onions and bell peppers tossed with pasta in a Cajun Alfredo sauce. The sauce was excellent — creamy and not as spicy or as overpowering as I thought it would be. The pizza was a 9-inch thin crust, topped with
shredded BBQ chicken, red onion and jack and cheddar cheese. If your meals come with a salad, I recommend the raspberry vinaigrette, which was very light and not too sweet. It took a regular Iceberg lettuce salad and kicked it up a notch.

You know that one movie or program that you are still resistant to? Sure, it is critically acclaimed and adored by everyone you know (and they are sure to remind you of this) but you have remained decidedly indifferent. For me, that has always been “Dexter.” “It’s a black-comedy, horror-show! Practically tailor-made for you!” they extol. But after a couple episodes during its first run, I was left unconvinced. Thank goodness for Netflix Watch Instantly, without which I probably still wouldn’t have realized what an entertaining, wicked show “Dexter” is. As the titular serial killer with a moral code, Michael C. Hall is a revelation, perfectly embodying a man whose entire life is one gruesome façade. The supporting cast is also roundly excellent, some offering Dexter support, others suspicious of his every move. A few episodes threaten toward TV predictability, but by and large, “Dexter” is a slice of riveting, entertaining television.

A new paper by American and British researchers suggests that thousands of rare flowering plant species will go extinct before they are even discovered by scientists. The researchers say habitat loss and climate change are to blame. Their work is published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. “Scientists have estimated that, overall, there could be between 5 million and 50 million species, but fewer than 2 million of these species have been discovered to date,” says lead author Lucas Joppa of Microsoft Research Cambridge in England. “Using novel methods, we were able to refine the estimate of total species for flowering plants, and calculate how many of those remain undiscovered.” Based on data from the online World Checklist of Selected Plant Families at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the scientists calculated that there are as many as 20 percent more undiscovered flowering plant species than previously estimated. The new, more accurate estimate can be used to infer the proportion of all threatened species, says coauthor David Roberts of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent. “If we take the number of species that are currently known to be threatened, and add to that those that are yet to be discovered, we can estimate that between 27 percent and 33 percent of all flowering plants will be threatened with extinction,” he says.

is the one I keep coming back to. When ice cold, it goes down quickly. Sometimes too quickly. A variation on a theme is Raspberry Wheat. Take Spartan Wheat, add raspberry juice. Ferment. Harper’s Ale is reminiscent of an English Ale, light and crisp in taste. On the other end is Grove St. Pale Ale, with a strong, hoppy flavor. If you like malted beers, Belgian Whit might be for you, flavored with orange and coriander. Blackstrap Porter is like drinking chocolate milk. On Wednesdays, Harper’s offers halfoff everything: food, beer, wine, alcohol and bottled beers. They offer an impressive menu and most of their food is really good. The pizza, salads, wraps and burgers are great. I tried a pasta dish a few years back and wasn’t all that impressed, so I can’t comment past that; things may have improved. If you’ve been thinking of heading to Harper’s, Wednesday’s are the day to do

If you’ve lived in the area long enough, you’ll probably remember Dooley’s as THE place to hang out in East Lansing, offering such cutting edge acts as U2 and Wall Of Voodoo back in 1981. After a few alcohol violations and street-filled brawls, Dooley’s threw in the towel in the late ’90s. Harper’s Restaurant & Brewpub took over, offering five constant microbrews and two or three rotating seasonals, all brewed on-site. The ’80s are still alive with a couple of bands that pass through Harper’s, but in cover-band form. Other acts as well as DJs fill the void the rest of the time. Harper’s floor space is vast and cavernous, offering multi-level seating and an impressively large bar area, a private dining/ banquet room along with a couple of pool tables, and that’s just inside. They also offer one of the largest patios in East Lansing. But enough about the space, it’s the beer we really care about. The only beers on tap are Harper’s microbrews. I’m a huge fan of Spartan Wheat. I’ve tried almost all of their beers, but this

He says that while “Sexes” is packed with partyready club tracks, the real key to sustained success is mixing in songs with deeper messages. “I would say there’s no one way to pinpoint my music,” he declares from his home base of Atlanta, Ga. “I think I’m very versatile, so some songs are for the club and in some I’m trying to teach a lesson.” Luda, who headlines Common Ground’s Capital Region International Airport Stage on Saturday, says he injected a much-needed shot of femininity into the album, writing about and for “women of the past, present and future.” “I don’t feel there’s been an album in rap or hip-hop where the theme is men vs. women,” Ludacris says. “Usually when hearing songs, you hear mostly the male perspective, but it’s very rare when you get a whole album where you hear the female perspective or both. “Men and women have been trying to understand each other since the beginning of time, and we still can’t seem to figure each other all the way out.”

Ludacris knew he had mad rap skills early on. “I wrote my first verse when I was nine, and it was called, ‘I’m cool, I’m bad, I might be 10 but I can’t survive without my girlfriend,’” he laughs. “I was lying saying I was 10 because I wanted to rhyme with girlfriend.” He moved from Champaign, Ill., to Atlanta as a teenager to pursue music. Friends in high places
With fame comes famous friends, and Ludacris and rapper Diddy are tight. So tight, in fact, they have what Ludacris calls a “playful bet” about who will have the next No. 1 single. “It’s funny. It’s a loving bet in that it’s just a competition-type thing,” he laughs. “Basically, we’re tied for the most No. 1 singles on Billboard [they each have five], and we’re just talking smack to each other to see who’s going to be the person who’s going to get that next No. 1 track.” Ludacris also recruits famous friends to guest on albums. Lil’ Kim, Eve, Ne-Yo, Ciara and Monica are among the world-renowned artists and emcees on “Sexes.” How does Luda pick peeps to collaborate? “It’s really who I’m a fan of at the time, and sometimes it’s just an artistic thing where some people have the gift of knowing what beat or hook I will love,” he says.

I just want to continue to work as hard as I can until I feel like the album is done, and then I’ll let you know,” he says. “But I would say early-2011.” Also on tap: “Fast and Furious 5.” “They’re bringing a lot of the people back from the previous, ‘Fast and Furious’ films: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese,” says Luda, who starred in 2003’s “2 Fast 2 Furious.” “So, it’s going down in a major way.” On Saturday, expect a spontaneous, energy-infused spectacle with witty rhymes. “My shows have a lot of versatility, and sometimes I have surprises,” he says. “I bring out special guests and a great mixture of songs. Being that I have seven albums, I can do songs from any of those albums at any given moment.”

Even rock stars get starstruck. Just ask Casey Walker, lead singer of chart topping, hard rock band Cavo. When Walker played Crüe Fest 2 last year, he got to meet one of his musical idols: Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx. And it was a thrill. “It was funny, I got a request from Nikki Sixx to come to his box, and he wanted to do an interview for his radio show,” Walker says. “We got to talk to Nikki Sixx on his bus, and he’s really such a great guy.” Growing up in St. Louis, Mo., Walker always had a knack for music. But it wasn’t until he saw Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder onstage that he felt called to be a singer. “When I saw Eddie singing, I was floored,” he says. “My whole world changed. You can just tell that what he’s saying is important to him. He puts his heart and soul into every song.”

When you hear Cavo, who headlines Common Ground’s Pearl Vision Stage on Thursday, the Pearl Jam influence makes sense. On the band’s major-label debut, the guys delve into straightahead, post-grunge rock with catchy, brisk riffs and raspy vocals. The title of the album, “Bright Nights, Dark Days,” is a reference to how the band’s life has changed since getting together in 2001. “It’s a contrast, because our job is done at night now, but in our old lives, our jobs were in the daytime,” Walker says. “Now we
usually sleep all morning, go into the studio in the afternoon and work until 2 in the morning. It’s like our world has been turned upside-down.” His answer couldn’t be more true, especially considering how much time Cavo spends playing late-night gigs. The band has been on the road most of the past year. That includes Crüe Fest 2, nonstop tours with Chris Daughtry and Shinedown and headlining gigs. Despite long days and nights
on the road, touring never gets old. “The best thing about the journey of being in this band is getting to play our music. These songs are all snapshots of periods in our lives, and when you see people appreciate that, it’s the best feeling,” Walker says. “When a person says, ‘Your song got me through the hardest part of my life,’ that means so much to the whole band.” Cavo’s second single, “Crash,” is a universal story about “wanting someone there for you, and finding that one person who is there no matter what.” “Yesterday my wife and son came up, and it was amazing spending time with them, but it reminds you of how much you miss home on tour,” he says. “You never really get used to it. It just gets less painful. But this is the life we signed up for, and it’s the best thing that’s happened to us. I’m grateful.”

‘Nightmare’ on the riverfront

Andrew Leahey wrote in allmusic.com, “in keeping with their unpretentious, blue-collar roots.” Still, they succeeded. “They did produce one of the era’s most respectable bodies of work, including three consecutive platinum-selling albums.” FRIDAY Tesla had two top-10 singles (“Signs” and “Love Songs”) and four top-20 albums. It dropped Skeach in 1995, folded in ’96 and Capital Region revived with him International in 2000; after he Airport Stage left for the sec- with Alice ond time, Rude ar- Cooper rived. His real surname, he said, sounds a little like Rude. “People said, ‘Oh, (Rude) will be your punk name.” It stuck, even though this is definitely no punk band. “They’re surprisingly down-to-Earth,” Rude said. He plays Skeach’s old riffs — sometimes copying them precisely, at other times improvising. It will be fun, Rude said, albeit done in the daylight. “To me, rock is supposed to be after dark.” Still, Tesla doesn’t need the fancy lights; the act that follows it at Common Ground does. “Alice Cooper is one of the great performers of all time,” Rude said. He’ll bring the flash and fury. First, Tesla will bring the basic, blue-collar rock.

Since ’the 80s, band keeps tradition, with new addition

Here’s a handy hint for musicians: Keep freshening your MySpace page; it may make you a rock star. At least it did for Dave Rude, who now trades guitar riffs with Frank Hannon in Tesla. “Frank happened to come across my MySpace page,” Rude said. “He said he liked my music and he thought I looked like a rock guy.” So Rude (who isn’t) joined the group a few years ago, stepping into a rock tradition. The Tesla songs and musicianship are strong, he said, and there’s a bonus: “Jeff Keith is one of the best singers around. He’s one of those rare people, like Bono, who seem to be singing right to you.” The band was formed in 1985, with Keith, Hannon, Tommy Skeach, Brian Wheat and Troy Lucketta. Once called City Kidd, it renamed itself after Nikola Tesla - the mad-genius AustriaHungary native who developed alternating current and much more. The name was exotic, but the rest was solid. The Tesla guys avoided glam-band trends, Steve Huey and

Right now, Matt Giraud’s career is at an in-between stage. People don’t seem to understand that. “Some will say, ‘Oh, do you still sing?’” he said. Yes, often. He cut a spectacular version of “You Don’t Know Me,” with Nashville singer Anna Wilson. And now he’s busy in his home state. “We did five or six sold-out shows in Michigan,” Giraud said. “That was a huge deal for us.” Now he’s at Common Ground, as part of his homemade, handmade career. To envision that, consider Giraud with Scott MacIntyre on “Idol” in 2009 during downtime: “We’d go down and jam together.” That was proof that people can reach the same place by opposite routes. MacIntyre had started classical piano lessons at 6. Giraud had … well, taught himself to play piano in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in Kalamazoo. At Western Michigan University, he majored in organization communication and African-American studies. You could say Giraud’s entire life has been an adventure in black studies. “My family is multi-cultural,” he said. “I grew up in a big, multi-cultural church.”
As an Ypsilanti teen, he made 35-mile trips to the church to sing with its group, Joyful Noize. “I was one of two or three white kids in the group, so I got my name.” He was “White Chocolate,” which carried over to “Idol.” Contestants were required to form groups; the White Chocolate quartet drew praise. Half of that quartet soared: Kris Allen was the champion; Giraud finished fifth. Judges liked him. “I don’t think you’ve had enough credit in this competition,” Simon Cowell said. Afterward, during a Larry King interview, the other finalists billed him as the “class clown.” “I don’t like depressing situations,” he said. “I got nervous, too, but then I’m likely to make a joke.” It’s an upbeat attitude that takes him to the next part of his life. There’s the song with Wilson. And an upcoming single with writer-pianist Jim Brickman … and concerts and an album.

If there was a single, defining moment when Gregg Rolie knew his band Santana had “made it,” it was Woodstock ’69. “I had no idea what 500,000 people would look like. But it didn’t strike me, because everyone looked like ants on a hill,” says the keyboard player and vocalist, speaking from Austin, Texas. “We played the gig, and at first, it was just another gig. But when we drove out, it took forever SUNDAY to get through half a million people. If I had known that going in, I probably would have been nervous.” After Woodstock, the Latintinged, blues-rock Capital Region band blew up: “SanInternational Airport Stage with tana playing WoodThe Machine stock was like a performs Pink slam dunk,” Rolie Floyd and says. Rolie, who headlines Common Ground’s Capital Region International Airport Stage on Sunday, was with Santana from day one. “I had a friend who saw him play at the Fillmore [in San Francisco], and he said, ‘I’m going to

find this guy and you’re going to play with him.’ He tracked him down, and we got together at this old farm house to play.” Apparently, they made so much noise the cops came. “We ran and hid in this tomato patch until the police left,” Rolie laughs. “And that was the beginning of Santana.” After Santana, success struck again, this time with rock band Journey. Unlike Santana, the road for Journey was long. Rolie remembers spending years developing Journey’s sound. “It was much more difficult. Santana exploded after Woodstock, but Journey took three or four years to build. At that time, record companies allowed artists to build themselves into being successful, so we put out three albums and toured, but at first, we sold more tickets than records.” Journey ended up selling over 75 million albums worldwide. These days, Rolie keeps busy playing gigs with his band, The Gregg Rolie Band. The group has a live CD out, “Rain Dance Live,” and jamming from city to city is a driving force for Rolie. “For the most part, I just like going out and playing live.” At Common Ground, he’ll play some Santana songs (off the first three albums) and other tunes. “I appreciate the fact cities and counties are bringing music to the fairs and festivals,” he says. “It’s great for people to experience and enjoy.”
