My Dear Disco has big things on the way — for one, a gig at Lollapalooza in Chicago this August, one of the biggest music festivals in the country. Before then, catch the Ann Arbor group Friday, July 23, at the Land of NOD Experiment in Jackson. Stick a bagpipe player with an electro-disco rock band and you’ve got My Dear Disco. Genre-bending doesn’t do justice to describe the band’s sound. It’s more like an indie music rollercoaster, fusing pop, techno, funk and rock, with Michelle Chamuel’s fuzzed-out vocals. NOISE caught up with Tyler Duncan, who plays the synthesizer, tenor sax and Irish bagpipes in the band. NOISE: You call your music “dancethink.” How did you come up with that term? Duncan: “Dancethink” is the core, philosophy and description. We’re making “dance” music, pulling on various genres of house, techno and electro. We want to make people move. The “think” part is very well captured by the fact we all met at the University of Michigan

natural. We have a lot of respect for her, and her reputation is hot and cold, but we’re always interested in what she does. Also Phoenix. I love their new record. MuteMath, Metric … I could almost say every single one of these artists, because I love them all. NOISE: What could playing Lolla mean for My Dear Disco? Duncan: It’s already meant so much. It’s turned heads. It legitimizes what you’re doing, because the festival is established and known for hiring established acts. There’s a whole promotional strategy to Lollapalooza, and a lot of compilations go out. We don’t know all the implications yet, but we’ve seen the first wave, and it’s already pretty amazing.

music school and pursued an academic study of music in an intense way. NOISE: Tell me about your new “Over the Noise” EP. Duncan: It’s available through our website (MyDearDisco.com) as ‘pay what you will.’ We’re also excited about releasing a new single through a website called PopMatters.com. It’s for the song, “It Could Be,” and it’s a real high-energy, rocking, raging dance tune featuring bagpipes as a lead instrument. NOISE: It’s awesome to see a Michigan band on Lollapalooza this year. Duncan: Thanks. It’s a festival I’ve always wanted to go to, because the bands I’ve always wanted to see have played there. I’ve never been to Lollapalooza, so it’s a great circumstance to be checking the fest out. NOISE: How did you get hooked up with the gig? Duncan: It’s like anything else: Keep doing what you do and do it a lot, and keep meeting people and hopefully impressing people along the way. If we hadn’t been touring and doing this as much as we had for the last two years, this wouldn’t have happened. This is why you work hard. NOISE: Who are you most excited to see? (HAWTHORNE BOOKS)

I’ve been on a non-fiction kick lately, but this book took me by surprise. It passed my desk and I thought I’d just read a few chapters. Next thing I know I’m reading the final chapter and thinking, “Damn, that’s one hell of a story.” While ostensibly a book about race relations and Frank Meeink’s voyage into and out of the violent underworld of American skinheads, it manages to encapsulate a WH I T NE Y dozen memoir themes SPOT TS into one book: it’s the story of an abused child whitneyspotts@gmail.com with addictive parents; it’s the story of a lonely teen being absorbed into gang-warfare; it’s a snapshot of race relations gone horribly awry; it’s a jail-house memoir; it’s a recovery tale; it’s a cautionary piece. In the end, it’s a lesson on how extremists are created out of despair, loneliness and fear, and how one man learned that hate was not the answer.

Sarah Ball, 26, of Lansing, with her dog Luci Saturday at Ferris Park in Lansing.

Grab your best four-legged friend and hit the town ometimes after a long day of work, Allison Cosgrove doesn’t feel like cooking. But when the 30-year-old Lansing resident walks in the door to a jubilant welcome from Santo and Ohana, her two dogs, it’s hard to leave them behind again and head to a restaurant. That’s why Cosgrove prefers to eat on the patio at dog-friendly spots like Pablo’s Panaderia in Old Town or Brannigan Brothers in downtown Lansing. “I take them everywhere I can,” Cosgrove said. “I love my dogs and I just love being able to take them out instead of having to leave them at home.” It’s easy to see why she loves her mutts. Ohana’s the more mellow of the two, with a carmel coat and tongue that hangs lazily out of the left side of his mouth on hot days. He’s part beagle, part cocker spaniel and part “something big.” Santo’s covered in patches of black and white fur. He’s smaller than Ohana, but can jump high enough to meet Cosgrove’s eyeline on command. He’s part boxer, and Cosgrove suspects he has some Jack Russell Terrier in him, too. “They’re both really well-trained and they’ve been around people since they were quite young,” Cosgrove said. It’s no hassle to bring them along when she goes out to dinner, especially if she walks them to the restaurant. By the time she sits down to eat, they’re tuckered out and just

park themselves next to her patio chair. “(Ohana is) a therapy dog, so I don’t worry about him,” she said. “(Santo is) a little younger, but they both listen. It’s just about the training.” Angela Brown of AnnaBelle’s Pet Station in Lansing said that training can take time, since each dog has different levels of comfort interacting with people, kids and other dogs. AnnaBelle’s offers a myriad of training classes for dogs, including meet and greet etiquette between dogs and/or people. “A dog can love people and not be great with dogs,” Brown said. Brown has two dogs: one that’s good with all dogs and people. The other dog is good with people, but not as well-behaved around other dogs, especially small dogs. “So I am much more apt to take the one dog everywhere with me as opposed to the other dog,” Brown said. “But I like to have them both socialized.” She’s trained the dogs to a point where she’s comfortable having them tag along when she goes just about anywhere. “You don’t want your first outing with your new dog to be the Jazz Festival,” she said. “You want to try your dog at the park where they’re going to encounter maybe a few people and some other dogs so you can assess what their limitations are.” Brown said easing into a setting like a festival or busy downtown street is important. Take baby steps to set your dog up for success.

“I think starting out in a place like a coffee shop, where people aren’t neccessarily sitting there for a long period of time (is a good start),” Brown said. “(Then) you’re not trying to eat an entire meal and watch your dog. You’re just sitting there with your cup of coffee, assessing the situation.“ Brown said careful introduction to new environments helps ensure the experience is a positive one for both dog and owner. “You can build on it and say OK, next time I’m going to walk my dog downtown on a Saturday when I know there’s going to be people out at cafes, and maybe the third or fourth time it’s something bigger (like a festival).” Ann Andrews, also of AnnaBelle’s Pet Station, suggested the sprawling outdoor campus of Michigan State University as a great setting to walk your dog. “That’s a nice place to walk because there aren’t a lot of other dogs there,” she said. “(It’s good) if you just want to have your dog learn to walk and be in a non-home environment.” Once your dog has mastered walking on a leash, the next skill set to consider is if they consistently heed basic commands. “Dogs are situational,” Andrews said. “They have one set of behaviors here (during classes), and getting those to translate to another place? That’s a new skill for them.” For example, she said, if you always teach “sit” at your kitchen ta-

Allison Cosgrove, 30, of Lansing walks her dogs Santo (front) and Ohana Saturday at Ferris Park in Lansing. She and her dogs attended Bark for Life, a fundraising event that benefitted the American Cancer Society. Ohana is a certified therapy dog and visits the sick. ble, that’s where they think that command means they need to sit. But if you never practice it in another environment, they may not respond to it as well in a public place full of distractions. “Getting a good sit and stay is really paramount to having a dog that enjoys going out in public,” Andrews said. Andrews said if all these skills are mastered, taking your dog out to eat at a restaurant and sitting at an outdoor patio can be fun.

Most of the restaurants and cafes in downtown Lansing with outdoor seating are dog friendly. Call ahead to check with restaurants before you go to see what rules apply to bringing dogs to join you for a meal. One of Andrews’ favorite dogfriendly restaurants is Gilbert & Blake’s in Okemos, which allows dogs on the patio and sometimes offers canine cuisine options. “(Sometimes) they have dog lasagna,” Andrews said.

POOP BAGS

Don’t forget to bring a way to clean up after your dog if you’re taking them to a dog park or for a walk downtown. You can throw a couple of plastic bags in your pocket or opt for a more elaborate gadget like this dispenser.

DOG-FRIENDLY EVENTS

Retractable leashes are great for a walk in a park or any setting where there aren’t many people or distractions around. If you’re walking your dog in a more trafficked public space, like a downtown area or festival, it’s best to use a more controlled leash — six feet long for a welltrained animal. If your dog is still learning to handle a busy environment, a four foot leash may be your best bet.

THE SMELL OF PHTHALATEFREE PERFUME

If you’re on the hunt for phthalate-free beauty products — and especially perfumes — you already know they can be hard to find. Patricia Malemes, owner and founder of Agape & Zoe Naturals, was on the same quest. She’d gotten rid of all her old scents and, in her search of something natural and phthalate-free, she created her company, which means “love and life” in Greek. Fresh fries, olive burger pair well with draft beer Every once in a while, my buddy Doug, who isn’t one for the bar scene, calls me up and invites me to lunch. The conversation always starts with, “Do you have lunch plans?” Then, after debating what we might be craving and where he’s gone over the past few days (he doesn’t cook), we usually end up eating a burger someplace. Last week, we landed at a place that normally isn’t on my radar, but has been a favorite for years, Dagwood’s. Dagwood’s has always been an interesting place to me. From the outside, it looks like a dive bar where Hell’s Angels might hang out, but inside tells a different

story. The waitstaff is extremely friendly, and if you get the pleasure to find owner Marji Cheadle behind the bar, you get some extra sass tossed in, free of charge. Dag’s has some amazing olive burgers, of which I’ve been hooked on for several years. Cheadle suggested I add a tomato to that burger, and that made things even tastier. It was one of the only places in town to serve fried pickles before fried pickles were cool to serve. And the prices are on the cheap too, that olive burger and iced tea (I would’ve ordered an Oberon, but I had a cold) was $5.

Fried pickles are $3 more. Legend has it that there was once a pipe organ lodged in the back corner of the bar. The two reliefs in the ceiling, which now feature a sky and clouds mural, were installed to help with the building’s acoustics for live entertainment. Dagwood’s keeps that tradition going with an open mic on Tuesday nights. Cheadle told me that there’s been some great musical acts over the years, but she’d really love to see some stand-up comedy.

SPECIALS All day, every day: Burger, fries and a 12-oz. domestic draft are $5 Sunday: $1 Old Style cans Monday: $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon cans Bottom line: Dag’s offers a full bar with Bud, Bud Light, Miller Light, Labatt, Bell’s Two Hearted and Bell’s Oberon on tap, along with soups, salads and sandwiches. With $2.50 domestic drafts, $3 wells and free entertainment, how can you go wrong?

Ludacris took the No. 1 spot at Common Ground Music Festival this year. The rapper, along with Academy Award-winning hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, pulled in a weeklong high of more than 14,000 people Saturday. That was good news for festival organizers, who were expecting a downturn in ticket sales. National concerts are expected to take a 10 percent to 20 percent decline this season. Malinda Barr, official spokeswoman and media coordinator for Common Ground, says the festival didn’t take as big a hit as many other similar events around the country. Final tallies are still being calculated, but early estimates show around 65,000 people attended this year’s festival. Last year’s total was 77,758. “We are at what we expected, so there were no big surprises in numbers,” Barr says. “We knew would be slightly down with the national trend in festivals down, but we keep our ticket prices affordable, so we didn’t see as big a decline as festivals that charge $50 or $60 dollars a night. “We did our research and were able to

The single-stage night drew 9,300 people. “We were very happy about Buckcherry,” Barr says. “We knew they would pull that kind of number, because our record park night ever was (in 2007) when Buckcherry, Hinder, Papa Roach, (The Exies) and REO Speedwagon played. So it was great that

Monday night, with only one stage, drew that crowd, because those nights tend to be softer.” For double-stage nights, Alice Cooper and Adam Lambert drew healthy numbers: 9,900 and 9,400, respectively. This year’s fest was pretty much dramafree. “We were pleasantly pleased with crowds and how well they behaved and how easily they got in and out,” she says. “For the most part, everybody had a fabulous time this week.”

Festival numbers down from last year, in line with trends

Chants of “Luuuuuuuuuddddddddaaa” were heard from the crowd of 14,000-plus at Common Ground’s Capital Region International Airport Stage Saturday, right before rapper Ludacris slowly and smoothly took the stage, mic in fist. The night drew by far the highest turnout for the festival this year, and Luda gave his fans their money’s worth, with a respectful, hit-packed set that lasted for nearly 1½ hours, buoyed by a chorus of cheers and hollers. “Guess what I got in the 517, Lansing?” he said, referring to Lansing’s area code. Naturally, this led into “Area Codes,” and more chart-toppers followed, such as “Number One Spot,” “Stand Up,” “Money Maker” and current singles, “How Low” and “My Chick Bad.” As for special guests, rapper Lil’ Fate from Disturbing tha Peace, Luda’s imprint, joined him on stage for the whole show. Luda genuinely seemed to have fun, and he fed off the crowd. At several points, he jumped into the photographer pit to touch fans’ hands. On top of his own singles, he surprised the crowd by performing other artists’ songs that he’s rapped on, from Fergie’s “Glamorous” to Usher’s “Yeah!” Saturday’s show also featured WardSkillz with BIG PERM, Yung Rich and .KOM and Academy Award-winning rap group Three 6 Mafia. The guys of Three 6 Mafia brought more than two dozen girls on stage to dance during their set. In the end, Luda proved that he is, indeed, one of hip-hop’s best live acts, without the need for elaborate sets or stagecraft, but simply by relying on his expansive catalog of strong tracks.

Woody’s Oasis is an East Lansing staple for Mediterranean food. The original location is at Trowbridge Road in East Lansing, and the latest spot opened in Okemos. My friend Nick, visiting from Portugal, wanted to go to one of his favorite hometown lunch spots, so we went to the Grand River Woody’s for lunch. Woody’s has a good-sized patio in the back, which is how we entered. There are tables inside, and a counter to order takeout. A short walkway leads to the main dining area. The restaurant was warm inside so next time we’ll sit outside.

Nick wanted the garlic chicken schawarma sandwich, but they were out of the garlic flavoring so he got the regular ($4.99). I got the medium hashwi ($6.49), which is beef and chicken with pine nuts, almonds and spices served over rice. We also wanted to share a medium pine nut hummus,

but they were out of that as well, so we went with the regular ($5.99). The hummus came out on a big plate, with a basket of pita triangles that were warm and soft. The hummus is creamy, smooth and rich. Nick and I both agree: Woody’s is the best place to get hummus — we dare you to find better — and it didn’t disappoint. My hashwi plate had a good amount of rice, beef and chicken with a tasty combination of flavors. I was feeling creative and

mixed some of the hummus with it. Nick’s sandwich at first looked pre-made because it was wrapped with paper, but he quickly figured out it was probably to hold the juice in, as the sandwich is messy to eat otherwise.

Have a haiku, limerick, narrative poem, original song — even an intelligent rant? Bring it. If you can fit it into three minutes, you can perform it Thursday at the Capitol as part of the sixth annual Poetry in the City event. “Everybody is so geeked about doing poetry on the Capitol steps,” said Rina Risper, publisher of The New Citizens Press, organizer of the Nu Poet Collective and event coordinator. “I would describe it as a unique opportunity for budding poets and creatives to express themselves.” Have stage fright? That’s easy to conquer, Risper said. “Come with a haiku. It only lasts three lines,” she said. “You can speak poetry, you can say a few words. We’re going to have a poet who is bringing dancers with her. We have a group that is coming from Big Rapids, we have dancers from Detroit.”

Lansing roller derby team loses to Port Huron in first-ever scrimmage

The final whistle blew and the sound of rubber stops scraping against the worn wooden rink drowned out the Lady Gaga song blaring from the speakers. As the scantily clad skaters slowed to a halt, one spectator asked “Is it over?” “Yep,” her friend replied. “Who won?” “I have no idea,” the friend admitted. “But I liked it.” The Lansing Derby Vixens roller derby team lost its first home scrimmage 121 to 48 on Sunday at Edru Skate-a-Rama in Holt.

Jammer Jill “Velma Revolver” Hodges (left) of the Lansing Derby Vixens lines up with the jammer from the Port Huron Blue Water Derby Girls team. The Port Huron Blue Water Derby Girls (and the skilled ringers they brought in from the Detroit team) took a victory lap that only earned them a smattering of applause. The crowd of about 100 people were there to see their mothers, daughters, coworkers and friends from around Lansing. The Vixens are a rookie squad that started skating just a few months ago. They still have work to do on their hip checks and protecting the jammer, but they didn’t lack hustle. Vixens coach Julie Cotton

said she hopes the team’s league bouts will begin this winter, and that Edru may become its home turf. After the scrimmage, Vixens slapped high fives with fans lined up in camping chairs. Those who sat toe-to-toe with the edge of the roller derby track — marked with neon pink tape on the floor — had to be at least 18. They were warned they might get a skater in their lap by the announcer at the start of the scrimmage. The up-close and personal seating is called “Suicide Alley.”
