Lansing-based rap artist Wil McFadden says his latest (and final) CD, “All I’ve Known,” sums up his musical journey in hip-hop. “I began at the rise of lyrical content and consciousness, so I’ve seen a lot. I’m so pleased with my presentation on this album that I chose it to be my exit,” he says. While McFadden is putting down the mic, he’s not leaving music completely. He’ll continue to produce other artists’ albums, including his nephew Shoney’s album. “He’s been featured on a few of my albums,” he says. McFadden’s going favorite on the release is, “Let Him Make It Home,” a personal track he wrote about dealing with his father getting ill. “What I went through with my father’s illness spilled out all over that song, and I’m very proud of it,” he says. “My father and I got closer the last five years. The growth of our relationship inspires my everyday life,” he said of his now-strong relationship with his father. “Most of my life I never had a relationship with my pops, so this is very inspiring at this point of my life.” • Lansing-based rapper Wil McFadden • New CD, “All I’ve Known” • Release date: Aug. 3 • ; $.99 per track online and $10 for the entire album at CDBaby.com, Amazon.com, iTunes.com, Napster.com, Emusic.com and various local record stores including Communication Palace/Metro Music and Paging and Anne Erickson Flat, Black & Circular.

Metalheads everywhere are bonded by a universal love for everything heavy. In that spirit, Adam Ray and the guys of Endless Aisle kick off Capital City Chaos Metal Fest, a celebration of metal music with a Michigan lineup, in what Ray hopes to be a bi-annual event. “I like that metal can bring people together,” says the lead singer. “Since I’ve been in this band, I’ve met so many amazing people through shows, from local shows to Detroit. This is a community of people, and there’s no bad blood out there.” Detroit-based death metal band As They Sleep headlines. The group is signed to Solid State Records, a Christian hardcore metal label out of Seattle, Wash. Ray has listened to As They Sleep for years. “I like their sound, plus being a Michigan band

makes it even better, because I like that more bands out of Michigan are getting signed to bigger labels,” he says. “I basically called them to see if they would do it, and after some convincing, they said, ‘yes.’” As for the rest of the lineup, it includes Blacktooth Brigade, One Without Reason, Hillside Barrier, Shell Shock Brigade, Black Hearts Now Sing and Psylesus. Most bands are from midMichigan. “We figured there’s never been a big metal fest in Lansing, so we thought to get together some of the area’s best bands and have them all play together,” Ray says. “I talked with the other band members about what kind of a lineup we wanted, and we wanted a diverse collection of metal and rock ... bands with different metal sounds and unique flavors.” As for Ray and the rest

• Capital City Chaos Metal Fest 2010 featuring As They Sleep, Endless Aisle, Blacktooth Brigade, One Without Reason, Hillside Barrier, Shell Shock Brigade, Black Hearts Now Sing, Psylesus • 7 p.m. Saturday, July 31, The Loft (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. of Endless Aisle — lead guitarist Erik Jacobsen, drummer Tyler Babcock and bass player Greg Maher — after the show, the band will return to writing songs for an upcoming CD, due out late fall or early 2011. They’re going on three years together making raw, pulverizing metal that incorporates the best of Machine Head, August Burns Red and Pantera. Ray can’t wait to see his hard work culminate in the first Capital City Chaos. “I’m just looking forward to having a good time and playing with the great crosssection of bands coming to play with us.”

Maker Faire

Robots playing soccer, a cupcake on wheels and fire sculptures are among the creations at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit for the Maker Faire this weekend. Thousands turn out for the annual event in California and New York, and Michigan’s hosting the first Midwest installment of the event that celebrates creativity. Maker Faire is sponsored by MAKE, a quarterly magazine leading the charge in the growing do-it-yourself movement. make a pill or something. The eternal question for everyone trying to improve is this: now that I know I’m capable at this level … how do I get better? Golf Digest runs a monthly column titled, “Breaking: 100/90/80/70.” In this column, various experts detail the swing mechanics, mental prowess (or lack thereof) and general game notes for each of the four scoring player types. Let me tell you: I could spend YEARS reading tips on this stuff. Yes, my pauper-like set of clubs could use a significant upgrade. Yes, my duck-hook fade shot-shape is not the prettiest to watch. And yes, if I hit into a cat-box bunker, my mental attitude craps the bed. But really: what is the ideal thing (or things) to manipulate about my game first? Do I drop the dough for new sticks? Spend my afternoons at the range? Tirelessly scan the hundreds of online forums for non-troll posts about breaking that next scoring plateau? It’s almost too much. I’ve come to realize that while a low number on the card leaves me grinning for days, the mere promise of golfing on a Tuesday evening is enough for me. I’ll continue to strive for birdies and pars, but bogey golf is just fine by me. I can hold my own in a scramble, I’m confident in my ability to keep pace and I genuinely enjoy the game for its pure entertainment value. All of that aside, if any of you loyal readers happen to hold any words of wisdom for this weekend warrior links lover, please feel free to let the comments fly. I still really want that 85.

Due to mostly empty threats from my high school softball coach, I diligently abstained from the sport of golf until my college years. Once I bought my first complete set of clubs from a big box store ($100), I was off to the races. Golf is a leisure sport that perfectly aligns with my favorite activities: competitive individual skill paired (occasionally) with adult beverages. While my fervor for the links was strong from the start, the summer of 2010 has catapulted me into a new stratosphere of adoration for the game. I’m sure a few of you will relate to this column — simply because I sense there are many of us struggling with the same dilemma. I’ll lay it out from the beginning: I’ve broken 90 in each of my last two rounds. The first time, I felt like it was a fluke: a single shining moment in an otherwise lackluster scoring streak. Then, it happened again a week later. I’ve played enough golf this summer to know that my game has reached a new level — directly correlated (undoubtedly) with the amount of time and money I’ve spent at various courses throughout our great state. For those of you wondering just how miraculous my 87 and 89 are in comparison to the rest of my recreational résumé, let’s just say that I prefer to hang out just below the triple digits. I’ve managed to snap something loose in my swing — and it’s paying off on the scorecard. It’s difficult for me to explain the satisfaction that comes from scoring well in golf to you non-golfers. Suffice it to say that I was more excited about breaking 90 than I was about receiving a raise from my employer. After my par on the 18th, I literally was thinking, “How quickly can I get this card laminated?” Completely ludicrous, I’m aware. It’s a sickness. They should

THE MSU DAIRY STORE: FROM COW TO CONE

Trucks called milk haulers work like a giant thermos as they transport the raw milk to a processing plant in Ovid. Because milk is a mixture of oil and water, it separates into cream and skim milk until standardized (blended) and pasteurized (heated to kill potential bacteria). The milk and cream products needed to make ice cream are driven back to the MSU dairy plant. Powdered skim milk, water and cream are among the first ingredients mixed together at the MSU dairy plant to make ice cream. Base flavors are added (like vanilla extract), then sterilized air is whipped in to these large batches of liquid ice cream. Nuts, fruit and chocolate are added to make the desired flavors.

The mixtures are poured into three gallon tubs and sent into a hardening freezer that’s minus 20 degrees. Prior to being served, the tubs are softened to a point where they can be scooped by spending time in a cooler that’s 5 degrees.

Students in the food science program at Michigan State University work in the Dairy Store, which also sells cheeses made on site at MSU.

An exhaustive, fascinating documentary narrated by Heather Langenkamp (Nancy from the original “Nightmare”) that chronologically dissects the behind-thescenes activities of each “Elm St.” film, “Never Sleep Again” breezes through its four hour runtime, providing anecdotes and insight into the evolution of Freddy and his legacy. Gathering a remarkable array of personnel involved in the franchise (no Johnny Depp though), the film shines a light on the business and creative motivations of each film, the labor of love that is special effects, and how much each cast enjoyed being tormented by our modern day boogeyman. The much-maligned “Elm St. 2” has the most interesting segment, with almost the entire crew claiming pure naivete when confronted with the notion that they created the “most unintentionally gay horror movie” (they did). Freddy devotees and horror fans in general, this is flat-out required viewing. You will not be disappointed.

‘Uglies’

BY SCOT WESTERFELD (SIMON PULSE)

This 2005 release — the first of a four-book bestselling series — is recommended by book-geeks and critics alike. I have devoured the first three books in a day apiece. It’s that gripping and that fast-paced. Some 300 years after us “Rusties” have been wiped out by an oil-consuming bacterium, advanced technology has led to a purportedly egalitarian society where everyone undergoes surgery on their 16th birthday to make them uniformly beautiful. Social ills like anorexia and war have been wiped out and time is passed in endless parties. But there may be an ugly side to all this, and Tally Youngblood’s new friend Shay isn’t sure that she wants to be made Pretty. When Shay runs away to join an undercover rebellion living as Uglies in the wild, Tally is trapped between betraying her friend or being forced to remain Ugly her entire life. The book raises important questions about beauty and perception, yet manages to avoid preaching by layering it into an action-filled plot. A movie version is slated to screen in 2011, and this could easily become the next Twilight phenomenon. Get on board early!

I ordered the Michigan whitefish sandwich ($7.95) — beer battered in a Ciabatta bun with tartar sauce and lettuce. Although it’s fish, it’s listed under sandwich so I had one side choice: sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries are what gets me coming back for more. I’ve had sweet potato fries that are mushy before, but at MBC they’re always crispy and not greasy.

It could have been kicked up a notch with some kind of sauce, though. My sandwich was a big chunk of whitefish that was battered to perfection (not too crispy). The bun was soft, and the tartar sauce wasn’t overwhelming. Kris went with the twisted turkey sandwich ($7.95) — smoked turkey breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion on a pretzel bun. He substituted the mayo for honey mustard. The turkey sandwich was pretty massive, with the turkey piled high. The bun was

It was crowded during lunch hour — a baseball game was on at the bar (there’s one TV), and that may have attracted some mid-day drinkers. Wooden tables fill the majority of the restaurant, with one area set up more casually with club chairs and side tables, which might be a hot spot during, say, Pub Quiz nights on Tuesdays. There’s also outdoor seating.

School of Seven Bells’ debut “Alpinisms” was a heady, near-masterpiece of shoegaze guitar and dreamy vocals, wraped around lovely melodies. With “Disconnect,” SVIIB has cashed in some of the atmosphere and mystery of its debut, choosing to further highlight the ethereal vocals and ’80s-insipred artpop, and the result is arguably the superior album. Coming across as a more muscular (and vocally coherent) mid-period Cocteau Twins album, “Disconnect” weaves layers of electronic blips over sheets of chiming guitar, but the luminous, twin vocals remain front and center, blending seamlessly and hypnotically. While “Alpinisms” could be accused of being almost too cool in its icily detached vibes, “Disconnect,” despite the name, is a more immediate, organic record and with songs like the beguiling “Windstorm,” a more welcoming one. With “Disconnect,” SVIIB has baffled any expecting a sophomore slump and delivered an Album of the Year contender.

AMIGURUMI

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting toys, often animals or dolls. The dolls are created by using in single crochet in the round. They’re made up of parts that are crocheted, stuffed, and sewn together. Sometimes felt is used to add embellishments. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.

MORE THAN SCARVES

If you’re an old pro at knitting scarves and winter hats and looking for an outside the box project, take a page out of author Anna Hrachovec’s book “Knitting Mochimochi: 20 Super-Cute Strange Designs for Knitted Amigurumi”. Krachovac says making amigurumi toys lets her inner child and inner geek join forces. Her book includes patterns for crocheting a toy television, grouchy couch and skyscrapers.

Crochet artist turns wool yarn into mini masterpieces

L

isa Hoffman in a Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts store is like a kid in a candy store. Scratch that — like a kid in Wonka’s chocolate factory. Until recently, the 26-year-old Grand Ledge crochet enthusiast worked at the store, where stocking the yarn was her favorite task. HOFFMAN Now she’s anxiously awaiting the birth of her first child, and instead of twiddling her thumbs, she’s cranking out crocheted toys for her Etsy.com store. She practices the Japanese art of Amigurumi, creating purple elephants, floppy giraffes, and fuzzy watermelon slices out of wool yarn. Her favorite items to make are hamburgers about the size of a hacky sack. “The hamburger one was my pattern I wrote up, so the next time I make it I don’t have to think about it,” she said. Hoffman makes two or three items a day, each one taking several hours to complete. She’s been crocheting since she was a teenager but didn’t make the jump to opening her own Etsy

store until last year. (Etsy.com offers artists a chance to sell their creations online.) Hoffman said it’s fun to get notes from customers, who order her creations from around the globe. She’s sold to people in Australia, France and Italy. She finds inspiration from other Etsy artists, and having the online store gives her the flexibility she’ll want as a stay-at-home mom. “It’s easy, you can do it at your own pace,” she said. “If you want to take a break, you can go ahead and take a break.” Hoffman has sold over 100 items so far, which range in price from $15 to $45. “When things are slow, I try to come up with new designs,” she said. “I usually make everything ahead of time, once it sells I make another one.” Her creations are safe for babies and pets — which she discovered after her two cats couldn’t destroy the yarn toys. “It’s a lot of hard work, but very rewarding in the end,” Hoffman said. “I probably work more hours than most part time, or full time employees do. But it is worth it.” She named her store Seventy Two Stitches after her favorite number. “Someday I would like to make something with exactly 72 stitches, but I haven’t come up with anything yet,” she said.

Whisk the egg in a wide, shallow bowl. Dredge each chicken cutlet through the egg, then through the breadcrumb blend. Melt the butter in a large skillet. Graffiti as ... Before demolition, Deluxe Inn will be canvas for artists, then exhibit Tricia Bobeda | NOISE

Before the Deluxe Inn is torn down later this month, it’s transforming into a hot spot for urban art. More than 25 graffiti artists will turn the old motel into an art project Saturday and Sunday. “We want to show there is a need for public spaces for public artists,” said Joe Manzella, who works for Lansing Economic Area Partnership Inc. The grass-roots group Accelerate Lansing will coordinate the art project, which is meant as an opportunity for the public to watch the graffiti unfold and be able to ask questions of the artists.

any alcohol bite in the aftertaste, although this may be common with 6-percent Belgian beers — a prominent alcohol aftertaste is common for the stronger duppel and trippel styles. Like most Belgian ales, the hops are low key and bitterness is not a factor. The full flavors and refreshing body of Brugse make it the kind of beer that invites refills. Brugse Zot translates as “Bruges Fool,” hence the prominent jester on the label. The De Halve Maan brewery that makes it is the only one still actually brewing in Bruges. It also makes a 9-percent Belgian trippel called Straffe Hendrick that I will have to look for. This Web link makes it easy by not only telling you the distributors of Brugse Zot, but also specific retailers by state: www.globalbeer.com/ body_pages/pages-whereto-buy/WhereToBuy.html (the closest locations are near Ann Arbor).

Wine deals a draw at E.L. bar When most people think about Beggar’s Banquet, they immediately think Wine Wednesdays, as well they should. The place gets packed early and goes all night long, just like it did last week. Our friend Terry reserved some tables for his going away party, and about 20 of us ate, drank and became merry. Sure, it’s a great bar ... but keep in mind that Beggar’s is equally a stellar restaurant. If you want to sit and talk with friends, Beggar’s is a place to do just that. The music playing in the background is unobtrusive, but on Wednesdays the conversation can get to almost earsplitting levels. Earlier this year, Beggar’s remodeled the front entrance/bar area, tearing out walls and adding more seating. The back entrance/ bar area got a face-lift as well, with new paint and the removal of heavy drapes. It looks really nice; more open and airy. The middle section still looks like you’re sitting in someone’s old barn, but in a cool way. Thanks to my attention deficit disorder, sitting for any amount of time gets to me. I’m good for about an hour, but after that, my leg starts bobbing up and down. A half hour after that, I gotta move, and Beggar’s isn’t the kind of place where you can just get up and move freely around for an extended amount of time. Beggar’s has amazing food, and when hung over (or still a bit tipsy from the night before), they have

Most of my experiences with Belgian ales have been with witbier (white ale, think Hoegaarden), duppels and trippels. Except for the witbier, I don’t come across the lesser-alcohol Belgian golden ales and pale ales that often. If Brugse Zot is any indication, I’d certainly like to try more of them. The ale has its own distinct personality, like many Belgian beers do. It has the lighter body of a witbier, but its malt flavor seems more pronounced and biscuity. Its spicy orange and lemon presence from coriander — also something in common with witbier — is helped along by the fruity aromas that are a byproduct of the Belgian yeast used. Using less or no wheat gives Brugse Zot a deep golden color, as opposed to the pale straw color of a wit. The Brugse also has a crisper carbonation that is a good match with the fruitiness and slight sweetness of the ale.
