Michigan-grown talent The Loft in downtown Lansing hosts a night of pure Michigan rock on Friday, with Davison-based alternative rockers Syndicate headlining. The band is made up of all University of MichiganFlint students, and it’s the guys’ fifth show at The Loft. “Even though Syndicate is out of the Flint area, we can’t seem to stay away from the Lansing crowd, and this venue is one of the greatest

Gossip in the Forest knows what makes a good folk song: honest, from-theheart songwriting, chemistry between musicians and a simple love for genuine indie art. In the tradition of acoustic and indie folk music, every Gossip song tells a little story. Each has its own distinct musical style and personality. There’s a jazzy, ’20s-style speakeasy tune about a hairy man (“Big Burly Guy”); another song sung partially in French (“Secrets”); and a ’50s doowop number (“Back in Town”). The Lansing group appears Friday at the Ingham County Fair’s Shirley Clark Pavilion (next to the Lions Club). NOISE caught up with co-lead singer and flutist Quinn White — who along with Tom Cocozzoli (lead guitar/songwriter), Dennis Hunt (rhythm guitar/banjo/ recorder), Drew Cocozzoli (bass guitar) and Faith Herrick (co-lead singer) make up Gossip — to talk

struments as part of the band, you have a lot going on musically. How do you make all the elements work together? White: Each person has their own style, and we just eventually found our sound. We’re all like a big family and have a great relationship with each other, and I think that really helps. NOISE: You and Faith Herrick have beautiful harmonies. Is that a big part of Gossip’s sound? White: Definitely. We can’t do a song without harmonies. It seems empty. I think our voices flow, and we do better together than we do separate. Even in songs where we can’t find harmony, one of us sings something in the background. I have a deep voice and she has high voice, so the harmony blends well. You either have the ear for it or you don’t, and luckily, we both have the ear for it.

Lansing folk band is stories and harmony

about the band’s beginnings on www.craigslist.com and more. NOISE: Lead us down the path that culminated in you establishing Gossip in the Forest. White: Tom Cocozzoli has been writing music a long time, and he was looking for a certain sound. He posted an ad on Craig’s List last year, and I saw it and sang for him. He and I ended up forming the project at first, and later we put together the rest of the band members. We booked our first gig in May, and now we have so many people calling us that we’re having to turn down gigs. NOISE: What draws you to the folk genre? White: I’ve always liked the story aspect of it. I like being able to tell a story and not just repeat a chorus or sing a bridge. I think another reason is because people pay attention to folk music. I’ve been in bands for 10 years, and folk is in its own realm as far as its fans in the indie world. When you go to bars to listen to bands, people don’t always seem to be there for the music. But when people go to a folk concert, they’re there to listen and appreciate the music. NOISE: With so many in-

It all adds up to a chill-out record that stages a thumb wrestling match between relaxing and disorienting. The EP is a svelte 18 minutes or so, and as such, the fractured pop songs don’t quite have time to develop, resulting more in impressions than lasting moments. But for its brief runtime, you are transported.

Smooth sassy 16th annual JazzFest attracts big talent

It’s inevitable JazzFest will attract firsttimers to Old Town.

ld Town Lansing’s 16th annual JazzFest kicks off Friday, bringing two days of free music from local, regional and national jazz acts. From 4 p.m. to midnight Friday and 1 p.m. to midnight Saturday, the streets of Old Town will overflow with soulful music, cheery faces, families and vendors selling food, beverages, art, clothing and crafts. Topping the bill are Derrick Gardner and the Jazz Prophets Friday and jazz-fusion guitarist Stanley Jordan Saturday. “Stanley Jordan is so talented, and his jazz comes from so many different areas of influence,” says LaToya English, promotions director for the festival. “What he does with his tap technique on the guitar is very dynamic, and I love the string sounds. To hear that will be exciting for me. “With Derrick, he’s toured a lot of different places, so it will be great to see him pull all those influences into his live show.” More on the major draws: w Derrick Gardner and the Jazz Prophets play Friday. Gardner formed The Jazz Prophets in ’91, bringing together a three-man horn line of Gardner, his brother trombonist Vincent Gardner (from the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) and tenor sax player Rob Dixon. Gardner was also the trumpet soloist in Broadway’s, “Thou Shalt Not,” with music and lyrics by Harry Connick Jr. w Lansing-based bass player Orrick Ewing has backed some of music’s biggest names, from Aretha Franklin to Mavis Staples to Smokey Robinson. He plays Friday. w Latin salsa-style band Orquestra RITMO, performing Friday, brings together musicians from Lansing, Grand Rapids and Flint. GoingGreen JazzFest proudly continues its greening efforts under the direction of the Sweaty Mouse Old Town Green Team, led by Erin Slayter. Schupan recycling bins will facilitate waste management. The Board of Water and Light has also donated the use of two watering stations for all guests to refill their water bottles for free. The festival has taken other measures to reduce waste production, such as a reduction in printing and repurposing of materials.

The band started in 1993, when founder and lead saxophone player Phil Denny put together Too Smooth for Notes for a talent show at Lansing Everett High School. w New this year is the “Kidz Beat” music tent, with Marshall Music’s Instrument Petting Zoo. Kids will play music makers and design their own using repurposed items, plus take home a free, small instrument (kazoos, recorders, wood flutes). They’ll also enjoy “musical exploration time” — singing, dancing and more — with parents and instructors. “It’s a way to incorporate children in the educational process and get them interested in fine art and jazz,” English says. With big headliners and (fingerscrossed) good weather, organizers hope the festival draws 15,000 people this year. Last year brought 13,000. “As we add more things and try to make it more accessible to the community, it grows, because it’s a free event,” English says. It’s inevitable JazzFest will attract firsttimers to Old Town. “I’m from the city of Flint, and my first experience in Old Town was at a jazz festival. I didn’t know Old Town at all until going to that festival,” English says. “I think the biggest thing is that we reach out ... statewide ... and try to promote JazzFest and get people to come to Old Town, because it’s a huge center for arts,” she adds. “It’s great to bring people into the community. It has a lot going on with a wide variety of art galleries, venues, shops and Michigan businesses that are working hard to thrive.” This weekend, expect that cozy Old Town feeling. “I’m looking forward to having a great time with a great bunch of musicians and seeing the smiles on peoples’ faces and their heads nodding and feet tapping,” says Ewing, who plays Friday. “I love to see people come together to enjoy one thing and have a great time within a great community,” English says. “It’s something that brings me here every year.”

Before the Old Town JazzFest kicks off on Saturday, join a huddle of volunteers at Perspective 2. As part of ePIFanyNow.org’s latest “Pass it Forward” event, volunteers will meet at 11 a.m. to come up with ideas for impromptu acts of kindness they can spring on neighbors in need. Next they’ll break into teams, do their good deed, and return to swap stories by 1 p.m. “The idea is to come together and create an energy of excitement; enthusiasm that creates continuous momentum,” founder Bob Hoffman said. “This isn’t a fundraiser, or religious or political in nature. It’s just likeminded people helping others for the sake of helping.” At a previous “Pass it Forward” event, participants cleaned an elderly neighbor’s home, gave out oranges at a bus station, bought a stranger’s groceries and collected clothes for a homeless shelter. As I write this, my ire for our beloved Tigers has subsided momentarily due to a rebound win over the White Sox. But seriously: everything about Detroit baseball since the All-Star break has made my stomach turn. The pitching has been downright abysmal. Our defensive juggernauts are all laid up, forcing us to start rookies who look greener than some Grand Ledge guys I’ve witnessed at Municipal Park in the spring. By my count, we’ve gone 5-15 since the break, dropping us all but out of the AL Central pennant race. Granted, it’s only August — but we’ve got serious work to do if we’re going to scrounge up a playoff spot in October.

‘Wildboyz: The Complete First Season’ MT V (172 MIN, NOT RATED)

With “Jackass 3D” only 73 (!) days away, now is prime time to revisit the less popular but equally (I saw even more) hilarious exploits of everyone’s favorite wild dudes, Chris Pontius and Steve-O. “Wildboyz” is “Jackass” meets “Crocodile Hunter,” as our two intrepid, ready-toparty hosts travel the globe, mingling with wild animals on both land and sea, and being exposed (and exposing themselves) to the cultures of dozens of different nations. While the show’s M.O., like “Jackass,” is to make the stars look ridiculous (and probably suffer), the animals are revered, and within the gross-out hijinks lies some real educational value. Various “Jackass” alum (including Johnny Knoxville) make appearances throughout the series, but this is Pontius and Steve-O’s show, and their off-kilter chemistry is magnetic. If you never “got” “Jackass,” you won’t find much to enjoy here, but if equal parts lewd humor and Animal Planet tours sound appealing, you need to get totally rad with the “Wildboyz.”

There are two things I want to highlight prior to this weekend ... and I scored a bit of help with one of them. NOISE reporter Tricia Bobeda caught wind of a little event called the Sixth Annual Monkeyball World Championships (10 a.m. Saturday in Dimondale). This event draws leisure sport enthusiasts from all over the country (ahem, WORLD) to test their skills on a grand scale: over 100 players compete for the golden monkeyballs. It’s near and dear to my heart, and I’m so thrilled that someone with actual journalism experience decided to cover it. Confused? Check out Tricia’s story on page 17. Secondly, if you’re not busy on Sunday evening, feel free to join me for what promises to be both an enlightening and intimidating experience: GUTS Frisbee. At 4 p.m. at Grand Woods Park (off North Willow Highway), the reigning World Champion GUTS squad known as the Boomtown Saints will be holding practice, which sounds more like a full-on scrimmage. From the little I know about GUTS, it involves two teams, standing about 45 feet apart, whipping flying discs at each other at upwards of 60 mph. Add those numbers together and what you end up with is a sports columnist shaking in her Pumas. I’ll be there, gloves on, ready to dive into something new. It should be quite a spectacle, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Monkeyball fill the weekend schedule

Cut the eggplants into 1-inch chunks. Place in a large plastic bag, add ¼ cup cornstarch and shake to coat evenly. Heat peanut and sesame oils in a wok over medium-high heat. Coat entire interior of pan. Stir-fry eggplant 3 to 4 minutes, until nicely seared and tender. Transfer to a platter. Combine broth, soy sauce, vinegar and sugar. Mix the 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water, add to liquid, mix and set aside. Add spices and bean paste to the wok, still over medium-high heat. Stir-fry 1 minute. Add the broth mixture and cook 1 minute. Return eggplant to the wok and toss until most of the sauce is absorbed.

Then, in the summer of 2006, Happendance teamed up with Lansing Community College to bring the showcase into the community, renaming it the Community Dance Project. This year’s project, directed by Missy Lilje of Happendance, includes performances in LCC’s Dart Auditorium, at (SCENE) Metrospace gallery in East Lansing, and at Old Town’s Jazz Fest. At each program, choreographers talk about their work; audience feedback will be invited. All shows are free. Sixteen dances will be shown at this year’s project

— enough for two separate programs. Professional choreographers, from Happendance and elsewhere, and emerging choreographers, are represented on both programs. Larger group works can be seen Thursday at Dart, and again Saturday at Jazz Fest. “This is the first year we’ve had a lot of work from professionals,” said Lilje. “Bill DeYoung (professor of dance at University of Michigan) was here teaching some master classes at the studio, and offered to give us a dance to perform for the project. There’s a big need among choreographers for places to show works.”

The term “homey” takes on a literal meaning at the RiverHouse Inn, a beautiful brick building that was a private residence for decades before it was turned into a restaurant. Inside, the layout of the house has remained the

same, with rooms serving as dining areas and outdoor dining in the “backyard.” It was a beautiful day, and no one was eating indoors anyway, so Melissa and I took our cue from those already dining outside.

on seafood (oysters, shrimp, calamari and scallops), salads, sandwiches and entree items. There’s also a dinner menu that’s along the lines of fine dining, and a small weekend brunch menu. I had the grilled salmon shrimp club ($11), with a side of fries. I don’t think I’ve

ever described a sandwich as “pretty” but that’s what it was. It’s served open-faced on Texas toast, piled with lettuce, tomatoes, salmon, pancetta (also known as Italian bacon), topped with two pieces of shrimp. The sandwich came with a side of ginger-lemon mayo that I put off to the side, and ended up forgetting about it. But that didn’t matter because the sandwich didn’t need anything extra. It was juicy enough from the shrimp marinade and the salmon. The salmon was perfectly

grilled, and I was surprised at how big the piece was. The fries were lightly salted and very good. Melissa ordered the chicken Caesar wrap ($8) — grilled chicken, Parmesan, lettuce, red onion and tomatoes tossed with homemade Caesar dressing all in a tomato tortilla, with a side of house-made chips. The wrap was packed with chicken, and the addition of red onion and the dressing made the wrap one of the best Melissa has had.

I ran into an old friend the other day. It has probably been 15 years since I last had an Anchor Steam Beer. No reason for it — my memories of it are positive, but whenever I see it in a store, I always end up buying the Anchor Porter instead (also a fine beer). Surprisingly, what it most reminded me of was a German alt beer, with its strong malt backbone and prominent bitterness. Anchor may technically be a lager, not an ale, but the steam beer style calls for fermentation at higher temperatures than is normal for lagers. The biggest revelation was how much I enjoyed the bitterness, something I am not known for. The more hops that are used during the boiling of the liquid malt (called wort), the more bitterness is imparted. There is something about the Anchor process that produces a pleasant bitterness, even though it is present and prominent from start to finish. It isn’t as penetrating or harsh as many bitter beers, where the sensation clings in the mouth. Despite the pleasant malt background, the amber beer has a light body and is not sweet, and

was quite refreshing on an 85-degree day. Anchor is a forerunner of the modern microbrewery movement. The brewery was purchased by Fritz Maytag in 1965 and he began bottling Anchor Steam in 1971. Now in his 70s, he sold the company to the Griffin Group earlier this year and it has not affected the quality of the beer. Anchor’s reputation and longevity have made it readily available around the country. I don’t expect anyone in lesser-populated areas to try to make a living specializing in craft and import beers — there’s still too much of the “I only drink (insert mass-produced beer product here)” mentality. However, that shouldn’t stop any establishment from experimenting. There is no need to have a huge selection, as long as there are some quality choices. In that kind of situation, everyone wins.

Can’t go wrong with $.99 drafts in a chilled mug After three late nights in a row, my buddy Justin and I decided to start early on Sunday. So at 3 p.m. we headed over to Los Tres Amigos to grab some food and libations on the patio. We’d been riding around in the Jeep for awhile, and while the weather was perfect for top-down riding, it was even more perfect for a leisurely round on the patio. We were greeted and seated quickly, homemade salsa and chips were whisked to the table and our server let us know about the drink specials. A $.99 beer (in a chilled glass!) and $2.50 margarita made it to the table in record time.

With a full bar, you can order your ’rita top shelf. And if you’re drinking with pals, they’ve got a $21 60-ounce pitcher of margarita. But I went with a regular 12-ouncer (my man card

would’ve been revoked if I ordered strawberry) on the rocks, and it went down fast — so fast, that I ended up with two One of Justin’s friends showed up soon after, and after catching up with her for a while, we perused the menu. Everything looked so delicious it took us some time to decide on what to eat. I was looking for something out of the ordinary, so I went with the Fajitas Pionero (Ham, bacon, beef, chicken and pineapple, $12.50). Justin grabbed a single beef fajita ($11.50). Audrey just stuck with water. After putting away those two margaritas, I switched to beer (in a chilled glass!),

and soon after our food arrived. The fajitas — which were full of flavor, but not overly spicy — are HUGE! I ate two and it looked like I hardly touched the skillet. Justin felt the same way. We each got a box for our food that weighed somewhere north of two pounds . What used to be the Spartan Sports Den and the Varsity Club before that, the guys at Los Tres have done a great job remodeling the place. Colorful walls and seating make the place eye catching. After letting our dinners digest for a while, we rolled our bodies out the door and back into the Jeep — massive leftovers in hand.

I was lucky enough to attend Book Expo America in NYC in May, and even luckier to have been witness to a fantastic author breakfast hosted by Jon Stewart with speakers Condoleeza Rice, John Grisham and Mary Roach. You’re wondering: “Who the hell is Mary Roach?!” Fair question. Mary Roach is a top-class investigative journalist who has devoted her unerringly hilarious books to the study of bizarre sciences, from cadaver science (2003’s “Stiff”) to paranormal science (2005’s “Spook”) to the science of sex (2008’s “Bonk”). Her newest book is an fascinatingly humorous look at the strange world of space travel. Think about it: how does a toilet work when there’s no gravity? Or, as she delicately put it, “Does dandruff in space make you look like a snow globe?” I guarantee you’ll be completely absorbed into this and even more mind-boggling topics of concern for astronauts and the people who work to make them safe, even from skin floaties.

If you’re looking for a fun and easy project that helps the environment, try The Great Sunflower Project (www.greatsunflower.org). The project requires participants to sign up on the website and plant annual Lemon Queen sunflowers (Helianthus annuus). Then users go online to describe their garden and give their specific location. After the garden has grown, participants watch their sunflower for 15 minutes a day, twice a month and enter specific data on a data sheet provided by the website. The project is looking to see how many bees come in contact with a sunflower in a given amount of time.

Bees are very important to the production of food, especially fruits and vegetables. Little is known about bee activity in home and community gardens, according to the site.

So, the goal of the project is to learn about the state of bee activity by collecting data from “citizen scientists.” Bees, the project’s leader argues, should be protected and people should try to understand them. More than 100 people from around the state will gather to compete in the sixth annual Monkeyball World Championship tournament on Aug. 7. Tournament organizer and avid monkeyball player Andy Frushour said anyone with some “competitive fire” in them will love it. “What starts as a social event with a little competition on the side, the longer the day goes, the more competitive it gets,” he said. “As we whittle the field down to 16, eight, four and two, it gets pretty competitive.”

The participants range in age from 8 to about 60. Monkeyball is a version of ladder golf, a popular game at campsites and tailgates. Players toss golf balls connected with rope and try to land them on the rungs of a makeshift ladder, each rung worth a different amount of points. The tournament is held at Old Orchard in Dimondale, 3426 N. Michigan Road. Players can sign up for the tournament online or register on site the day of the event. The cost is $10 per player, and the tournament guarantees at least two games per person. “I think it’s all about people,”

Frushour said. “We try to amp up the level a little bit by making it a big tournament, and having a PA system and shirts and a website, (but) it’s all about having the set, some lawn chairs and some good people.” Keith Hagen of East Lansing competed last year as a rookie and won fourth place out of more than 100 players. He said he is hoping to do well again, and knows it’s in part a mental game so he needs to stay focused. “I’m just going to try to simulate what I did last year,” Hagen said. “(I’ll take it) one game at a time, try not to out-think it too much.” He’s recruited several of his classmates at Cooley Law School to learn

the game so he has people to practice with throughout the year. Hagen will need practice and focus if he wants to land among the top four again, Frushour said. The top 20 contenders in the tournament are very good, and the top four are “extremely good.” Frushour is a top ranked player, but he’s never won the World Championships. “The computers do have me ranked number one right now,” he said. “(I have) won a lot of tournaments but never won this big one that I organize.” Frushour plays weekly to keep his skills sharp. He’s ready for the main event this weekend. “I’d like this to be the year I take the golden monkeyballs,” Frushour said.
