Blues on the Grand British singer-guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor has a great “how-I-got-discovered” story. At age 16, Joanne played in front of Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, and Stewart was so impressed, he asked Taylor to join his supergroup, D.U.P., and tour Europe in 2002. What really struck Stewart was Taylor’s R&B-infused blues-rock, played “so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end,” he says in a release. Taylor’s latest endeavor is a lively new CD, “White Sugar,” produced and mixed by Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, Jonny Lang). The greater blues community dug the release, and nominated her for a Blues Music Award (the “Grammy of the blues”) for Best New Artist this year. The 23-year-old blues gal plays Blues on the Grand Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Lansing City Market. It’s the last show of the season for Blues on the Grand, so that’s added incentive to head out and enjoy! • Joanne Shaw Taylor, Kathleen Bolthouse, stand-up comedy intermission by Connxtions Comedy Club • 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12 • Free • The Gillespie Marketplace, at Shiawassee Street and Anne Erickson Grand Avenue.

Serenade: ‘Hear Me Now’ Emily Shur photo

New album comes from a deeply personal place Anne Erickson | NOISE

Secondhand Serenade’s John Vesely never thought he’d be topping the charts and making a living as a bona fide musician because, well, he always thought of music as a hobby. Sure, he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area with musical parents (his dad was a professional jazz musician), but music was something he did just for fun. “I sang in my car a lot when I was younger,” he laughs. “I’ve been in bands ever since I was 12 years old, but it was more for leisure than anything else.” And yet, Vesely eventually found himself reaching No. 7 on Billboard’s pop chart with, “Fall For You.” “It was kind of surreal, because it wasn’t necessarily expected at all,” he says. “One thing led to another, and it was really fun to see that happen. “Every Tuesday we would get all our radio ads and

watch what stations would pick the song up. Getting into the Top 40 chart was amazing.” Vesely is really a solo musician who performs under the stage name Secondhand Serenade. Why doesn’t he go with his full name, like most singer-songwriters, aka. Jack Johnson and John Mayer? “My music is more of a rock project, so I wanted to keep that feel to it,” he says. “I wanted to have people enjoy the music more than the person behind the music.” Vesely picked the name, Secondhand Serenade, because he plays his songs in front of whomever they’re written about before playing them live: “Since the fans are the second ones to hear it, it’s like I’m giving fans a ‘secondhand serenade.’” Vesely, who plays Friday at The Loft, released a new full-length album Aug. 3, “Hear Me Now.” Recorded partly by Aaron Johnson (The Fray) and partly by

Vesely, the album shows Vesely’s evolution as a songwriter, with a variety of tunes that go from straightup pop to modern rock to rhythmic. The lyrics on the album come from a deeply personal place. “I found myself writing about self-exploration and forgiving myself and moving forward,” he says. “Everybody does things they’re not proud of from time to time, and I’m owning up to that.” More than anything, the record is honest. “I put a lot of emotion and personal feelings into it,” he says, “and I think it shows.”

Ozzfest’s Goatwhore With Ozzfest about to kick off, many are in the metal mode. The annual heavy metal and hard rock music festival starts Saturday, Aug. 14, in Devore, Calif., and continues for a total of six U.S. dates. The closest stop to mid-Michigan is Tinley Park, Ill., on Tuesday, Aug. 17. (I’ll be there — can’t wait!) But if you can’t make the trip, one of the bands on the tour — New Orleans’ Goatwhore — plays an off-date on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Mac’s Bar in Lansing. Openers are Lansing metal icons Genocya, Serpent Crown and Dark Empyre. “It’s an honor to open for a band like Goatwhore,” Genocya bass player Jim Albrecht says. “They have always had a knack for taking the best parts of oldschool metal and making them sound new and fresh again.” Genocya’s upcoming CD, “Ever Descent,” is currently being mixed by Lansing-based producer and musician Sean Peters (Wastelander) and will be mastered by Dave Otero in Denver at Flatline Audio. Look for it this fall! • Goatwhore with Genocya, Serpent Crown, Dark Empyre • 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18 • $10 pre-sale at http://bermudamohawk.bigcartel.com; $14 door • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. This new release is the third in the utterly charming Ellie McDoodle intermediate reader series, written and illustrated by Lansing’s own Ruth McNally Barshaw. The series is comparable to the uber-popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series, with Ellie McDoodle narrating the action in her journal of doodles which she carries with her everywhere (like McNally Barshaw, who can be spotted in a crowd jotting drawings of the people around her). Despite the similar diary format, these books and Ellie’s voice are original and adorable. The first book — “Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen Will Travel” — follows the very Michigan ordeal of a family camping trip that had me flashing back to my childhood on Lake Michigan. The newest addition features Ellie in a “petscapade,” trying to track down the parrot she lost while bird-sitting. Filled with fun facts about animals and Ruth’s whimsical sketches, this book is a winner from start to finish!

he Great Lakes Folk Festival returns this weekend, now in a compact, concise form. The bad news? Valley Court Park, which gave the festival its evening flavor, will be

T

ignored. The good? “Downtown East Lansing will be a lively place,” said Kurt Dewhurst, who co-founded and codirects the event with his wife, Marsha MacDowell. One view is that compactness is a worthy goal. “We were too spread out for some people,” Dewhurst said. “They were running from one event to the next.” Besides, he said, the park’s daytime concerts wilted in the August sun. “People huddled in the back, in the shade ... We had some unhappy performers who didn’t have many people in front of them.” Nighttime was another matter. Then the park was a place for blankets, for families with picnic baskets, for dancers on one side, teens in the back, the full music-under-the-stars experience. This year, that will be gone. Most of the music will be confined to three spots, with audiences on folding chairs. The City Hall Stage and Dance Stage are under tents; the MAC stage is not. On Saturday, another tent has authors during the day and new touches — a community sing and a jam session — at night. “It will be much more of a participation experience,” MacDowell Alberta Adams said. Valley Court Park is being dropped because of a convergence of events: Last year, rain forced people to the tented stages. This year, it was believed that City Centre construction — now in limbo — would block the path to the park. And in every year, money problems have grown. The festival has a budget of about $700,000 — half in actual money, half in in-kind services. That keeps dwindling with financial troubles, especially for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. “This year, it has no money,” Dewhurst said. “We’re still partners, but we’re unfunded partners.” Still, this year’s festival — free, with donations requested — has key pluses. They include: w A powerhouse singer. Alberta Adams — alternately described as 93 and 89 — will blast the blues and receive a heritage award. “She represents a time when Detroit had this thriving scene,” said Patrick Power, who books the acts. w An emphasis on eco-friendly parts of the folk culture. “There are very creative activities — in some

cases age-old — that conserve resources,” MacDowell said. They range from bee-keeping to quilting, from bottle-cap jewelry to projects that involve solar lanterns and wind turbines. w Styles of music that even this far-flung festival hasn’t had before. “We have been wanting to book flamenco in the festival forever,” Power said. w More festival firsts. Power has booked the usual audience-grabbers — Irish, French-Canadian, polka and Cajun music — but he also has Iranian, Bulgarian and Senegalese performers, plus the fest’s first Hawaiian musician. Kimo Hussey is a master of the ukulele — which is quite logical in his state, Power said. “He says in Hawaii the ukulele is a

piece of furniture; it’s part of every home.” w The festival’s first cowboy poet. That’s D.W. Groethe, a Montana ranch hand who stars at cowboy-poet festivals and general folk events. “I love this kind of festival,” Groethe said. “I get to see all the acts I’d never get to see otherwise.” That includes neat quirks: The Irish band has a Frenchman on fiddle; the Slovenian polka band has an Irishman on accordion. “The United States is definitely a melting pot,” said Ed Klancnik, the Michigan State University grad who leads the polka band. Lots of styles and backgrounds will be melting into one busy — and much more compact — weekend.

Cowboy Poet

D.W. Groethe

People sometimes ask D.W. Groethe how one becomes a cowboy poet. His response? “I tell them:‘Get yourself a degree in theater. It will never get in the way.’” He really has one, from the University of Montana; then he went back to the work he’s always done. “I’m a ranch hand,” Groethe said.“If you want to call me a cowboy, I guess you can.” Well, he does some of the ranching on horseback, so

that’s enough. In between, he writes his poems. After growing up on a North Dakota farm, Groethe tried theater, rock bands and a music solo act. In college, he turned some of his songs into poems.“I had a friendly crowd that would put up with almost anything.” A sibling had the family farm, so he stuck to ranch-hand work in Montana. In 1992, Groethe and a friend visited a cowboy-poetry festival – an event that was just starting to catch on.“That has become a runaway hit in the West,” said Kurt Dewhurst, the Great Lakes festival’s cofounder. And Groethe has become one of the

key people.“My name is fairly well-known now,” he said.“People actually have requests, which is an odd feeling.” And they know some of his poems by heart. Groethe had never claimed to memorize all 175 poems and 75 songs he’s written; in an emergency, he could improvise a little.“If it rhymes, you’re OK,” he said.“But now, they’re actually mouthing the words along with me.” Still, he’s glad to see them there.“My favorite crowd is never over 300,” Groethe said.“You can see the faces of the people.” That’s the kind of crowd he can get in a folk-festival tent. And it’s a lot more than Groethe sees on the Montana prairie.

For folk-festival fans, there’s an annual tradition – Big Irish bands, big stages, big crowds. From Cherish The Ladies to Solas to Eileen Ivers and beyond, the Irish concerts are loud and lively. We assume this is a tradition that has lasted forever. Or not. The whole big-concert thing has emerged in the past half-century or so, Paddy O’Brien, of Chulrua, said. “It was the folk revival that influenced it. That came from here (in the U.S.) first.” O’Brien knows the turf. “He’s one of the leading experts on Irish music,” said Patrick Power, who booked Chulrua to the Great Lakes Folk Festival. And at 64, he’s seen huge changes. Back in O’Brien’s boyhood, traditional Irish music was confined mostly to homes. “I remember the house concerts,” he said. “There was always a conversation about the music. Nobody knew anything about who was good or bad, but they knew the music.” He savored it all as a boy, in a rural setting in County Offaly, then traveled the country learning the tunes and the instruments. “I was an accordion

Schedule:

Even in his Michigan State University days, Ed Klancnik says, he never hid his double life. Sure, he was a rock ‘n’ roll drummer in a Klancnik and Friends successful band; that can make you quite popular. Still, he also was a polka player. “I never really hid that,” he said.“I think everyone knew.” Today, it dominates his career. He’s been heard on TV and in movies; now Klancnik and Friends will be at the Great Lakes Folk Festival.“It looks like a real all-star band,” said Patrick Power, who books the festival. “But he told me this is not just a pick-up band; they play together a lot.” These six men are scattered around the country – Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan – during the week, then convene on weekends. In this case, they’re visiting his home turf. Gaylord Klancnik was a polka star who doubled as a draftsman for Ford. His son Ed was pounding Mickey Mouse drums at 2 and sitting in with the band at 13; at MSU, he majored in building construction management and spent chunks of time drumming with a rock trio, Dimestore Freud. These days, Klancnik works as a recording engineer for others and his own Ranch Recordings. He does session-work drumming and has been involved – playing or recording – on 60 albums. And yes, that includes polkas. Jay Leno once showed him with others, outside the polka hall of fame; when the movie “Cars” gave one of its characters a polka theme, Klancnik was on drums. In 2005, he and his father were laying down some tracks for an upcoming album. That night, Gaylord Klancnik, 60, was killed in a car crash; those tracks became the basis for an award-winning CD.

fanatic …. The fiddle has a long history, but the accordion really only came into popularity in the 1940s.” His timing was perfect. As Americans discovered the music, the Clancy Brothers and others toured. In Ireland, traditional music was nudging into the pubs and then onto the concert stage. O’Brien – who worked as a fitter by day – joined various groups and did concerts in Ireland from 1966-69. He toured the U.S., then returned here in ‘78 with the Bowhand trio, to do concerts and record for Shanachie Records. Soon, he was settling in Minneapolis. Why would an Irish musician choose a Swedish stronghold? “I got some work in Irish bars,” O’Brien said. “There were eight or nine good musicians around there.” That’s where he met his wife Erin Hart, an Indiana native with an Irish soul. She’s an author (her three mystery novels are set in Ireland), theater director, critic and more. “She sings very well,” O’Brien said. From his Northern base, he’s created collections of Irish songs and shipped them around the world. One order for 15 copies, he recalls, came from Tokyo. O’Brien has also organized the trio he’ll bring here: Pat Egan, a guitarist, is from Tipperary; Patrick Ourceau, a fiddler, is from … well, France.

In a recent column, I asked about a sport called Guts Frisbee. I, honestly, didn’t expect anything to come of it. Within hours of print, I received an e-mail from Betsy Banghart, a fan (and a team member’s wife) of one of the Lansing-based World Champion Guts Frisbee teams, the Boomtown Saints. Within a day, I had an open invite to their weekly practice. I was told to bring sunglasses, cleats and gloves. I was immediately equal parts stoked and intimidated. I rolled into Grant Woods Park last Sunday and laced up my decadeold softball cleats, strapped on my moldy batting gloves, and mentally prepared to kick some serious ass. I was greeted by Mike Banghart (Betsy’s father-in-law) with a firm handshake, a knowing smile and Guts memories dating back to the 1970s. I pounded my energy drink and took the field with seven dudes gently tossing orange discs. Warm up. I was feeling pretty sweet throwing at first, when I glanced to my right and realized that the velocity of my tosses could be likened to that of an infant in comparison to what was happening elsewhere. About 15 guys gathered for a multi-squad scrimmage ... and I realized very quickly that I needed to sit on the picnic bench and watch — if I wanted to keep all of my teeth and appendages. If you haven’t seen this before, Guts is a sport played between two teams of one to five players each. The objective is to be the first team to score 21 points. To start play, each team lines up facing each other about 45 feet apart. Play is accomplished by a player attempting to throw the disc toward or at the opposing team and within the reach of at least one player of that team, in such a manner that the opposing team cannot make a clean catch. Scoring is contingent on the success or failure of the throwing team. A good throw, without a catch, results in a point for the throwing team and a bad throw results in a point for the receiving team. They whip these little orange discs so hard I thought someone was

.J. was tall enough to see over the counter at the nurses’ station. Camille had to stand on her tiptoes. At 8 and 5, they’re already a lot older than the children the nurses in the Sparrow Hospital Mother Baby Center spend their days caring for. They handed one of the nurses a bouquet of flowers. Their mother, Kelly McCord, explained that she’d delivered both of her children at Sparrow (and T.J. was a stubborn one whose labor took more than three days). “Just the way they cared for me (was amazing),” McCord said. “They knew I was a new mom, and so they gave me tips and brought in people to help me learn how to breastfeed and be successful, how to swaddle the baby, and all the basics. “Even when I couldn’t move and do a lot for myself, they said just sit down, take care of you, we’re here to

www.ePIFanyNow.org take care of you and the baby. They made me feel comfortable.” McCord always meant to return to Sparrow with a gift for the nurses. The ePIFanyNow.org “Pass It Forward” event on Aug. 7 inspired her to make the time to deliver flowers to the hospital. About 40 participants at the “Pass It Forward” event met briefly at Perspective 2 Studio in Old Town to discuss ideas for their random acts of kindness and pick up the “Pass It Forward” pocket cards before heading out to do their good deeds. Bob Hoffman founded ePIFanyNow.org, and said the movement is not affiliated with any religious or political group. Everyone is welcome to participate by passing an act of kindness forward, and anyone is eligible to benefit. “It’s a structured opportunity versus just dropping in somewhere and saying how can I help,” McCord said about the event. “Now that (my children are) getting a little bit older, I’m trying to bring them to do things. We went to volunteer at Whitehills (Health Care Center) on New Year’s Day and they really enjoyed that. (We’re) real-

ly trying to get them out in the community to volunteer.” ePIFanyNow.org has held several structured opportunities for “Pass It Forward” days so far. It also encourages people to keep the random acts of kindness coming anytime and share stories on its website. “You may get people who say I don’t need any help,” Hoffman said. “Those are the perfect people because then you say, ‘That’s awesome, you’re the person I want to touch because you can help somebody else.’” McCord mentioned at the event’s opening meeting that she wanted to take flowers to the nurses. “Why not buy them from the new flower shop that opened around the corner from Perspective 2?” someone suggested. Then she’d be helping a new local business, too. McCord agreed, and she and her two children picked out flowers from the newly opened Tallulah’s Folly on Turner Street. McCord explained to shop owner David Gregware what they were doing with the flowers. There was an undeniably warm and fuzzy feeling in the air. And it was contagious. Before she could get her wallet out, he gave her the flowers for free.

‘A Concert for the King’ Not everyone can make the trip to Memphis. That’s why Jennifer Thede and her husband have organized “I’ll Remember You: A Concert for the King” in Ionia for Michigan’s Elvis Presley fans this weekend. Elvis died Aug. 16, 1977, in his Graceland mansion, and fans hold tribute concerts and candlelight vigils for the king of rock ‘n’ roll each year in Graceland. “(It’s about) remembering Elvis, honoring Elvis, coming together with other Elvis fans,” Thede said. Thede and her husband founded the Michigan Elvis Presley Fan Club in 2009. They organized a two-part event for the anniversary of the death of Elvis. Sunday’s event will include a screening of “Viva Las Vegas” and a concert by Elvis tribute artist Jake Slater at the historic Ionia Theatre. “He’s a young man, but he really embraces that nostalgia,” Thede said about the Elvis tribute artist. “He got into Elvis when he was younger, and he has a real appreciation of Elvis. It’s not just that he wants to go around trying to be Elvis or sing like Elvis.” Thede said Slater’s old soul helps him connect with the Elvis fans during concerts. “He interacts well with the crowd,” Thede said. “Anybody coming to the concert will see how much he loves Elvis, too.” Tickets are $5 each for the film and concert. They can be purchased online at www.mielvis.com/ionia or by phone from the Ionia Theatre box office at (616) 527-3860. • Film screening of “Viva Las Vegas” starts at 12:30 p.m., tribute concert from 3 to 5 p.m. • Sunday, Aug. 15 • Ionia Theatre, 205 W. Main St. in Ionia • www.goelvis.org or call (231) 796-4467. Tricia Bobeda

Bar near MSU campus popular spot after games The last time I was in The Roadhouse Pub was 1996. For about three years, it was a favorite hangout for my buddy Sumnar and me. Plenty of beer was drank (and spilled), pool games were won and lost and many a plan was crafted to take over the world. When Sumnar graduated and moved to the Detroit area, I never returned to The Pub, as it was considered sacred ground. But last week, I swallowed my pride and headed over to The Pub with my new posse, where I spilled some beer out for my homey, Sumnar. The Pub’s owners also

own Harrison Roadhouse. The two venues share a parking lot, and during Spartan sporting events, $15 gets you a parking spot. After the event, either location honors the parking pass as a $15 credit for food. Justin and I walked in right around 5 p.m., and one of the regulars was there getting his martini, poured in a glass that they keep behind the bar just for him.

(That’s service!) Our bartender, Crystal, was listening to some adult alternative chill-out music that I was getting into. She went to change the channel to classic rock, but I requested some techno. She obliged. Crystal poured us a round of drinks (Jack and Coke, $3) and we sat at the bar talking about our day while perusing the menu. A few minutes later, a couple of

guys walked in and started playing the jukebox. The selection in the jukebox is identical to The Riv, so there was a few ’80s arena rock-band tunes tossed in with some classic rock from the ’70s. We ordered some burgers, which were delicious, and put away another round of drinks. Just like old times, the three of us decided to come back for a guys night out: We plan to wear cowboy boots (none of us owns a pair), smoke cigarettes (none of us smoke) and play pool and darts. Pool and darts are the only thing we really do ... you know, besides drink.

‘Horror Hospital’ DA R K S K Y F I L M S With a simple (though a brief synopsis doesn’t do it justice) plot about a crack doctor performing mind control experiments on unwilling (but awfully groovy) teens, “Horror Hospital” is a pitch black horror-comedy that delivers a consistent number of laughs and shocks. Though the intended satirical elements generally fall short of scathing, the film benefits from a brisk pace, and the style and energy that can only be British films of the ’70s. From the dated, mod clothing to the awesomely inappropriate musical cues, the film wears the decade like a badge. While certain to be viewed as a dark comedy, “Hospital” does amp up the blood and nudity quotient to a surprising degree, trading fear for more lurid, exploitive elements, and the film is all the better for taking that angle. With blade-wielding cars, Nazi flashbacks and hippie zombies, “Horror Hospital” is a cult flick deserving of a slot at your midnight movie night.
