New Hampshire’s And Then There Were None got its start in the early 2000s playing metalcore — the heavier, the better. But unlike many bands, the group did a 180 and got into the groove on its latest album, “Who Speaks For Planet Earth?” Rapid-sequenced drums, a strong bass rhythm and synthesized hooks make up And Then There Were None’s new, Eurodanceinspired sound. Drummer Ryan Manning says that’s the music the band has “in their hearts.” “It’s dance music,” he says, chatting from Boston. “We were touring and listening to dance music all the time while we were playing metal, and we finally just took a risk and said, ‘Why don’t we just play techno?’ “We went ahead and started accumulating material slowly and

started experimenting with new beats and sounds, and we loved it,” Manning said. “We completely embraced it.” They got busy posting on social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook, which got them noticed by Seattle’s Tooth & Nails Records, who signed the band and helped put out their release. The album “Who Speaks For Planet Earth?” debuted at No. 16 on the Christian rock chart and No. 14 on Billboard Heatseakers in 2009. Clearly, Manning has a love for sequencing and looping. “I love talking about the technical side of things,” he said. “When you’re at a show, the drums are live and everything you hear is

me. In the studio, it’s very intense, because we’ve really embraced sequencing and doing everything note by note. We’re most known for that super bass-y kick drum.” If the band has a message, it’s tied into their love for humans, animals and pretty much all living things. Members — Manning, lead singer Matt Rhoades, Nick Massahos (guitars) and Sarah Graziani (synthesizer) — are either vegans or vegetarians, and Manning makes no secret of their work with peta2 (PETA’s young adult division). Lansing promoter Fusion Shows brings the band to MXTP in Grand Rapids today.

Helmed by Beck and Radiohead megaproducer Nigel Godrich, the soundtrack to Edgar Wright’s effervescent graphic novel adaptation is a mishmash of the sound of ’90s slacker rock, classic rock and more current indie pop. With the heavy emphasis on music in the film (Scott is bassist for a power trio; a battle of the bands turns highly literal), the care with which the original songs were written and the previously released songs were selected is obvious. The tunes Beck turned in for Pilgrim’s band, Sex Bob-Omb, are the perfect balance of catchy grungepop while still bordering on amateur. Even better are near-forgotten gems by Beachwood Sparks and Plumtree, whose song gave Scott his name. While the extraordinarily entertaining film is playing, every soundtrack note rings true, complementing and enhancing the story. Divorced from the images, however, the music never quite takes hold and you may not often return to it.

If Brett Favre shows up for practice with the Minnesota Vikings today, it will be exactly (to the day) one year since the last time he made a decision on his playing future at the very last possible second. Is it OK that I’m planning to root against him for the rest of his career? I know I’m not the only one who has lost her patience with No. 4 and his offseason antics, and that only has a tiny bit to do with the fact that his team happens to be in the same division as the Lions. I hope Detroit trounces the Old Gunslinger this season when they play in Minnesota on Sept. 26. (Actually, I just hope Detroit trounces anyone this season…) Andi Osters, 27, is a Michigan State graduate.

‘I’d Know You Anywhere’ BY L AUR A L I P P M A N (WILLIAM MORROW)

Eliza Benedict is a stay-athome suburban mom with a sweet young son, a surly teenage daughter and an adoring and understanding husband. Walter Bowman is a serial killer who has been on Maryland’s death row for 20 years. He has finally exhausted his avenues for appeal. One day, an envelope arrives in the mail and shatters Eliza’s peaceful existence. The letter is from Bowman. “I saw a photograph of you in a magazine,” he tells her. “You are older now,” he adds, “but I’d know you anywhere.” Years ago, when Eliza was just 15, Bowman kidnapped her, raped her and held her prisoner for weeks. While she was his prisoner, she saw him murder another girl. Police finally rescued her when they pulled Bowman over for a routine traffic stop. Over the years, Eliza successfully walled off her past, but Bowman’s letter brings it all back. Why, she wonders, did this monster let her live? Eliza loathes the very idea of any contact with Bowman, but he is the only one who can answer her question. Meanwhile, the mother of the murdered girl, who has been impatiently awaiting Bowman’s execution, has a question of her own: Was Eliza really a victim, or might she have been an accomplice?

race day is better than Christmas for some of them. The campgrounds looked like the exterior of the United Nations building — but instead of country colors raised on poles, we had Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart flags a-flyin’. There were RVs bigger than my entire apartment. There were campsites that resembled small traveling circuses. It was a feast for the eyes … and many other senses at various times. I was amazed at how well things went, considering the sheer volume of people. MIS ran a great event, and I’m seriously considering buying an actual ticket to get inside the track next year. I never thought I’d say it out loud, let alone write it for all to see: NASCAR might just be for me.

Pudding, NASCAR, Pringles and camping with six guys: What do all of these things have in common? Well, Michigan International Speedway, if you must know. Last week, I traveled south to Brooklyn to soak up the stock car racing experience in all its glory. To preface: I did not attend any of the actual racing — it was more about the surrounding activities. We arrived Friday evening, found our 20- by 45-foot campsite and pitched tents ... then sat around and toasted S’mores and told campfire tales. That’s not entirely factual, but for the sake of my dignity we’ll leave it at that. Saturday morning came far too early, thanks to a wicked combination of sunshine-induced inner tent heat, strange neighbors talking about large aviary creatures (?), and the overwhelming desire to visit the freshlycleaned portable toilet facilities. Graphic, I know. After rousing, eating something that resembled potatoes from the “convenience store,” and main-lining fluids, it was time to venture toward the track. Without question, for the first several hours of the day, anytime an engine revved I felt my stomach drop a bit. This could’ve been due to the pistachio pudding concoction I consumed the previous night ... or the ungodly loud noises that forced grown men to wear earplugs while walking around the outside of the racetrack. The most important thing I took from MIS (other than a 2nd place finish at the Monkeyball doubles tournament!) was a healthy appreciation for a unique subset of American culture. you’ve grown accustomed to low-key summer strolls down Grand River Avenue, short lines at the grocery store and the ability to browse Bed Bath and Beyond without battling a crowd, we have news for you. The students are coming. Michigan State University’s upperclassmen are already starting to trickle back into East Lansing, but the onslaught comes during freshman move-in on Aug. 29. East Lansing in the summer is a little like a resort town in the off season. The city’s permanent residents claim downtown as their own. On the weekends, they often fill the streets with music and art festivals. On weekdays, they lounge on their laptops at coffee shops without having to fight for a seat. “The vibe is really great,” said 32-year-old East Lansing resident Samara Valla. “There still seems to be a lot of really positive energy in East Lansing (during the summer). There’s constantly activities, and festivals and events going on and they’re all family-friendly. We lug the kids everywhere we go.” She and her husband, Justin, graduated from MSU in 1999, and still live within walking distance from the main drag of campus.

Elissa Fountain, 20, is ready to head back to school at Michigan State University. Returning students can move in starting Aug. 30. Classes start Sept. 1. Photo by Tricia Bobeda.

They love being able to take their daughters to experience all that the university has to offer, from the Butterfly House to the 4-H Children’s Gardens. As much as she loves the slower pace of the summer, Valla said she’s ready for the return of students. “We really look forward to it,” she said. “The energy that comes back to the town is incredible. You live it vicariously through them all over again. Living in a community like this really keeps you connected to the youth and to what’s happening.” Connie Harper of Spartan Corner, which sells Spartan apparel and gear, is in the same boat. She couldn’t be happier to see the students roll back into town. “This town is built around students,” Harper said. “There’s a different feel in the summer. It’s more relaxed.” That relaxed state is something East Lansing’s businesses are used to. The veterans have learned to budget so they can survive the slow summer sales by rationing the profits from bumper months surrounding the football and basketball seasons. Luke Hackney’s glad to see the students come back to campus. It’s definitely good for business at Retro Duck, the custom apparel store where he works. But he likes to avoid the city on the days full of moving vans and U-Hauls. “We tend to stay away until they’re all moved in,” the 28-year-old East Lansing resident said. Hackney said it’s a good time to slip away and visit friends out of town for the weekend. In between ringing up customers at Agog Arts, Laura Hall, 33, said she’s not shy about taking part in MSU Welcome events that are open to the public. Agog Arts sells classic college posters

FOR EAST LANSING RESIDENTS: • Don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry. You can do everything you usually do, it just takes longer. • Michigan State students are diligent supporters of two things: recycling and adult beverages. If you’re going to return recyclable cans and bottles to the grocery store, we suggest doing so in the morning. And by morning, we mean before 3 p.m. • Take advantage of the Welcome events open to the public. Some offer up Velcro jumping walls, or cheap movie screenings in Holden Hall. Plus, there are plenty of vendors around giving out free samples of food and drink or coupons. • If you’re an evening grocery shopper who frequents the Okemos Meijer, it would be a good idea to either stock up this week or hit the store in the morning. Whole buses full of students are shuttled back and forth from campus to the store during the first week of the fall semester. Don’t get stuck in line behind 15 teens with carts full of Easy Mac just to buy a carton of eggs.

We asked undergraduates, recent graduates and longtime East Lansing residents for some tips on how to make sure the return of the students is as fun and stress-free as possible. Here’s some of their advice.

DO’S AND DON’T OF WELCOME WEEK

and goofy items that are essential to a dorm room or first apartment’s decor. Its employees are busy this week stocking up on prints and throw pillows. Hall said she wouldn’t miss events like Meet the Spartans, which turns Ann Street Plaza into a whirlwind of school spirit. Sometimes, Hall said, they bring in a Velcro jumping wall. How can you pass that up? Valla agrees. “The experience is what you can’t get anyplace else,” Valla said. “Coming down to see the marching band before games. Going to a hockey game. Having the butterfly house right here. The access to the Wharton Center. The benefits are kind of endless from having this type of community.” There are things they’ve learned to avoid during Welcome Week (although it’s not really a week anymore) —

such as driving on Grand River Avenue. “The congestion is just not worth it, Valla said. “Families and kids are lollygagging and checking things out. “It seems like there is always somebody driving the wrong way on West Circle. Without fail there is somebody who turns out of a parking lot and is coming at you.” Hall has seen enough new students cycle through campus to know that fall move-in, no matter how wellplanned by the city and university, is always hectic. She said residents just need to budget more time into their travel across town. And her advice to students is simple: Have fun. Drink plenty of water. Call your mother once in a while. She has one other piece of wisdom. “Follow the street crossings,” Hall said. “Don’t just walk in the middle of the street. Pedestrians aren’t first come, first serve here, not like Ann Arbor. You will get run over.”

Fall welcome isn’t the full week it used to be, but it’s still important to make time to get to know your surroundings. Check out the area’s businesses and restaurants. • Get your books early. The last day for full refunds varies from store to store, but the longer you wait, the more you risk getting stuck with an expensive textbook for a class you drop or swap. • Learn to use the CATA buses, and make sure you know the schedule of when the routes start and stop running. • Have a local cab company’s number in your phone in case you need a safe ride home. • Write down important numbers — including one for a cab — and keep them somewhere safe in case you lose your phone, or drop it in the Red Cedar River. • Respect the locals — you might become one someday.

STATESIDE DELI

Five spots to grab a bite before the students return

Now on Thursdays AUG. 19 – AUG. 25

Two people eat cheap for just 20 bucks

The second location in the area opened last week (the original location is in Okemos) and if the food there is any indication, this New York-style deli will become a hit, fast. On its second day, there was shortage of seating in the front of the restaurant during lunch hour, so try to avoid that time, if possible. There’s a ton of sandwiches and grilled subs to choose from, which have fresh ingredients and are made on the spot. • Best bet: The Stateside — pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on double baked rye. • Info: 313 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, (517) 853-3033 • www.statesidedeli.com • Read a review of the Stateside Deli in next week’s NOISE.

SANSU SUSHI & COCKTAILS There aren’t too many people who don’t consider SanSu the best sushi spot in the area. That might be because there’s a high-class feel there, the menu goes beyond traditional sushi rolls and includes a lot of creative options, and the ingredients are always fresh. Even if sushi isn’t your thing, don’t pass on a trip — there’s plenty of other cuisine to choose from. • Best bet: Super spider roll — tempura shrimp, soft shell crab, avocado and cucumber. • Info: 4750 Hagadorn Road, East Lansing, (517) 333-1933 • www.sansu-sushi.com

Thanks to its outdoor patio right on Grand River Avenue, the Peanut Barrel is packed even in the summer. So there’s no doubt that students will flock to this East Lansing mainstay once they’re back. For prime seating under the sun, stop by late morning or later in the evening. And be prepared to wait. All of the food, ranging from burgers to wraps, are cheap. And the chili cheese fries are massive. • Best bet: The garden burger ($5.25 with fries) will satisfy even meat eaters. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with the rodeo burger, a quarter-pound burger with bacon and cheese ($5.75 with fries). • Info: 521 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, (517) 251-0608 • www.peanutbarrel.com

The end of August drawing near means one thing — school is soon in session. You can already see it happening, as returning students are moving back and eventually, thousands of newbies — at Cooley Law School, Lansing Community College and Michigan State University — will be roaming and driving the streets of downtown Lansing and East Lansing. Lines at bars or restaurants that seemed reasonable during the summer may end up testing your patience. So visit these favorite eateries now and enjoy some peace while you can.

If you’re looking for a quick bite and the usual sandwiches, this is the spot. You’ll find BLTs, clubs or you can build your own. • Best bet: Big T’s reuben — corned beef or turkey, coleslaw, Swiss, Thousand Island dressing ($6.79). You also can’t go wrong with any of the soups, with about three choices available daily. The portobello and roasted tomato soup is a favorite. • Info: 119 S. GENO’S PIZZERIA The newest pizza joint in Lansing is an East Coast style eatery. The dough is made fresh daily, with sauce made from handcrushed San Marzano-style tomatoes, basil, garlic and mozzarella cheese. • Best bet: Pizza by the slice ($2.50 plain, toppings extra) or 14-inch chicken Parmesan pizza ($17). • Info: 208 S. Washington Square, Lansing, (517) 580-7124 • www.genospizzeria.com

Renegade spirit Theater festival brings dramatic mix to Old Town Tricia Bobeda | NOISE

A weathered plastic patio table on director Jason Carlen’s deck and three wine glasses are the only props used to turn the backyard into a French restaurant. The 31-year-old Lansing resident will use the same meager set for performances of the one-act play “Unfinished Business” during the Renegade Theatre Festival in Old Town this weekend. The only difference? It’ll be draped with a fancy tablecloth. Ah, the magic of theater. Starting today, Old Town will be bursting with productions of

new one-act plays, improv, and performances of new and established works by theater companies from around mid-Michigan. All of the performances during the three-day festival are free. “Renegade has always been focused on the kinds of material that theaters may not have a chance to put on their mainstage,” said festival organizer Melissa Kaplan. “It gives theaters a chance to experiment or try out new material.” The event is fueled by volunteer actors, directors and playwrights. Local business owners donate the use of their spaces for performances. This is the annual festival’s third year in Old Town. It was held in East Lansing in 2006 and 2007. The festival offers a section

of shows for young audiences on Saturday afternoon, a forum of community of business and arts leaders and live music between shows. Carlen is directing one of the eight plays that make up the New Original Works (NOW) portion of the festival, a new addition to the event. He moved rehearsal out of the sticky afternoon heat in his backyard last week and into an empty music classroom in the basement of a Lansing Community College building. He’s a recent graduate of the LCC theatre program and enlisted the help of fellow actors to be his cast. No more than three strides away in each direction, music stands marked the edge of what will be the black box style stage. The festival is Carlen’s directorial debut, and he’ll also take

part in the LCC improv show. Carlen said staying active as an actor makes him a better director. “You know what bad directing is when you’re an actor,” Carlen said. “Directors don’t necessarily know they’re giving bad direction. It helps me to know what things irk actors and (how) not to do those things.” Carlen seems as excited about attending the festival as he does directing in it. “Most of the people I talk to have been to Jazz Fest or Blues Fest. Take that (idea), but instead of great bands playing, you’ve got all these great theater shows you can see for free,” Carlen said. “If you like theater at all, you need to go. It’s an amalgamation of all the talented artists (here). For the middle market city that Lansing is, we have an amazing theater community.”

All of the venues for the festival are located in the heart of Old Town, surrounding the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Turner Street. Street and lot parking for all performances is available within walking distance. Stop by the information tent on the corner of Grand River Avenue and Turner Street for a map of the performance spaces, which include: • Perspective 2 Studio • Studio 2010 • Creole Gallery • The Warehouse • 1223 Turner • Mustang • The Red Cedar Friends Meeting House

FESTIVAL SCHEDULE Performances for the festival begin in each venue at 7 and 9 p.m. today through Saturday, Aug. 21. NOW pieces will perform in The Red Cedar Friends Meeting House. The Renegade Kids performances will take place Saturday at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. The “Feed Your Festival” forum featuring business and arts leaders exploring how festivals impact the community is at 5 p.m. Saturday at 1223 Turner St.

Green Day swings through Sure, iconic East Bay punks Green Day have sold millions of albums and boast a huge catalog of hits including “Welcome to Paradise,” “Brain Stew,” “When I Come Around,” “Minority” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Now they’re taking on a new challenge: Broadway. Green Day’s “American Idiot” musical opened in April at New York’s St. James Theatre, and it was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical this year. The roaring, highenergy one-act show is an adaptation of the band’s Grammy Award winning concept album, “American Idiot,” plus tracks from the new release “21st Century Breakdown.” In other words, seeing “Idiot” the musical is a lot like seeing the band live: loud, action-packed and unapologetic. With Green Day taking over almost every art form, it’s a good thing they still do old-fashioned touring. Lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bass player Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool perform Monday at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston. Fellow Cali punks AFI open. For those who couldn’t make it to Lollapalooza to see both bands this year, consider this a second chance. • Green Day, A.F.I. (A Fire Inside) • 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23 • DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road, Clarkston • Tickets $35-$85 plus charges available via Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com

PRIMATOR A.S., NACHOD, CZECH REPUBLIC WWW.PRIMATOR.CZ 7.5 PERCENT ABV

Primator is another of the breweries that is bringing more attention to the beers of the Czech Republic. The country’s brewing skills always have been top rate — after all, it is the birthplace of the pilsner style — but the Soviet days were not kind to them economically. The past few years, however, have seen a good number of quality Czech lagers making it to our shores. Primator Maibock is a bit stronger than a typical maibock and enters into the blonde doppelbock category. It pours with a nice, rocky head that leaves sticky lacing on the sides of the glass — a good indication of a malty beer. Sure enough, the first taste is of biscuity, slightly sweet caramel malt with a honey-vanilla background. The carbonation is between medium and crisp, and a bit of hop bitterness helps cut the sweetness at the end. Since the Czech Republic is home to the excellent Saaz hop variety, I was expecting more hop flavor and aroma, but it is subdued. This may be due to bottling; except for bittering, hop properties traditionally do not last long in bottles. It’s all in all, though, a very good beer, which

I couldn’t say about Primator’s Double Bock, a dark doppelbock with a 10.5 ABV. Whereas the Maibock’s slight sweetness was right for the style, the Double Bock was way too sweet and cloying. I really couldn’t form an opinion on the flavor of the beer because I couldn’t get past the sugar blast. Primator would do well to put the Double Bock sugar levels about the same as the Maibock, and it would be a much better beer. Distribution information on Primator is tough to find — the company’s website basically just gives brewery contact information, and distributor El Dorado Beverage Co. of Cameron Park, Calif., only had one webpage working at the time of this writing. I bought my bottles in Wisconsin and have seen it referenced online from all U.S. regions.

IN SEARCH OF THE LOST FROGS Costa Rica. Colombia. Australia. Guatemala. Researchers have launched an unprecedented search of the planet’s remotest spots to try to find 100 “lost” amphibians — ones feared extinct, but that may be holding on in a few isolated places. Conservation International and the Amphibian Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature made the announcement today. They said the search is being conducted in 14 countries on five continents. Globally, more than 30 percent of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction, the groups said. Naturally, this has repercussions beyond even amphibians. In a discussion not long ago with a Drexel researcher, she told me her students are looking into how the loss of amphibians in a particular spot in Central America is affecting populations of fish, which eat the tadpoles and other young. According to the groups, “many of the amphibians that the teams of scientists are looking for have not been seen in several decades, and in some cases, nearly 100 years. Establishing whether populations have survived or not is vital for scientists looking to understand the recent amphibian extinction crisis.”

From Albany, Young and Divine brings upbeat tunes By combining positive energy, super-charged choruses and mighty guitar lines, Albany pop-punk trio Young and Divine hit a pop-rock nerve with the band’s self-titled RCA debut, out last March. ‘Super Fuzz’ SOMERVILLE HOUSE (97 MIN, PG)

Sometimes, when you crave action and hardboiled badassery, you need a gritty, hard-hitting cop action film. Something with Eastwood ... maybe Pacino. Then, sometimes, you need “Super Fuzz.” Directed by spaghetti Western great Sergio Corbucci, “Super Fuzz” is the epic saga of Officer Dave Speed, a mild mannered cop who winds up with super powers after being exposed to nuclear radiation. He is framed for murder, and after some harrowing/zany execution attempts, heads out to take down those responsible and clear his name. With tongue firmly in cheek, “Fuzz” is the misguided (but royally enjoyable) attempt to shoot some exploitation mojo at wacky buddy cop movies. And while the results are decidedly less than mixed, “Fuzz” is still a wacky romp with loads of nostalgia value for those raised on ’80s HBO. Did I mention Ernest Borgnine rides a giant, flying chewing gum bubble? Now you have to see it.

Add the eggplant, zucchini, red bell pepper and garlic. Saute 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the tomatoes. Lower heat to medium and cook 5 minutes, stirring once or twice. The summer bounty of garden-fresh vegetables makes this dish a special treat. I first tasted this dish at a restaurant in France. The sauce was made right at the table, and the aroma was so wonderful we couldn’t wait to eat. The sauce is made with eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, ripe tomatoes and tangy goat cheese that melts, coating the vegetables. Use the best quality vegetables you can find. If really fresh vine-ripened tomatoes aren’t available, use good-quality canned plum tomatoes. HELPFUL HINTS: • Place water for pasta on to boil first and then cut all of the vegetables. • Minced garlic can be found in the produce section of the market. • If crumbled goat cheese is not available, use any type of goat cheese and break it into small pieces.
