Mr Denton on Doomsday You know a band is serious when it has shared the stage with heavyweights like The Misfits, Nonpoint, Adema and Sponge. That’s the case with Lansing-based metal outfit Mr Denton on Doomsday. Since getting together four years ago, the guys have played with those acts and more, everywhere from Mac’s Bar in Lansing to Harpo’s in Detroit. What vocalist Travis Floyd, guitarist Brian Alspaugh (aka “Fate”), bass player Matt Bush, violinist Phoenix and drummer Benjamin Walnut offer is an experimental metal sound mixing classic influences (such as King Crimson and Black Sabbath) with a contemporary edge and even some blues-rock. Lyrics-wise, they write about everything from personal reflections to the world of politics. Mr Denton also has seen success in the radio realm. The guys’ single, “Karo,” has been played on more than 400 Internet radio stations, and they’ve also stopped by the studio at 88.9 The Impact’s (WDBM-FM). Catch the band Friday at The Loft in downtown Lansing. • Mr Denton on Doomsday, Atrium, Pistol Day Parade, The Trip, Pselsus • 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 • $8 • The Loft (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. Once the rumors started, there was no turning back: Stone Temple Pilots — the legendary grunge group featuring lead singer Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bass player Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz that broke up in 2003 — would, according to reports, be revived for a reunion tour in 2008. Sure enough, the buzz turned out to be true, and team STP got back together for a nationwide tour. And they’ve been going strong ever since. With a new, selftitled album in tow, they bring new songs and classic hits such as “Between the Lines,” “Plush,” “Creep” and “Wicked Garden,” tonight to Detroit’s Fox Theatre. Alternative rock band Cage the Elephant opens. Like many bands, STP dealt with their demons. For Weiland, it was a heroin ad-

diction. But all the fuzzy rumors, cryptic stories and press-mucking just made the group more mysterious, more rock. Weiland, for one, is everything you could ever want in a frontman. Charismatic and controversial, his compelling onstage presence is undeniable. Wherever there’s mediocrity or boredom, Weiland meets it head-on, megaphone in hand. They say all good things come to an end, and in 2003, STP parted ways. Weiland joined the Guns N’ Roses supergroup Velvet Revolver and released some solo stuff. Meanwhile, the DeLeo brothers hooked up with Filter vocalist Richard Patrick to form hard rock outfit Army of Anyone. Until 2008. There are plenty of reasons STP decided to reunite after five years. Some are tangible, like money and fans. Others, not as much. “This is home for us,” Dean DeLeo told MTV News after the band officially announced the reunion. “I’m fond of our legacy, and I’m fond of our band — I’m

a fan. I get off when I’m riding down the highway and an STP track comes on the radio.” “The ultimate goal of this band was to leave a legacy, to have our songs make an impact, to be on the radio still 30 years down the road, and to be enjoyed by the people,” Weiland told MTV News. “Whether it’s something that gives them a feeling of heartache, or something that they relate to because of a struggle they went through in life. “Music is just something that makes you feel, believe and be inspired. That was the goal always, to have our music out there and for it to continuously, over a period of years, inspire.”

Regular Noise readers might remember my recommendations of the previous two novels in this powerful young adult trilogy (“Hunger Games” and “Catching Fire”). Both books were No. 1 New York Times bestsellers, highly critically acclaimed and multiple award-winners, and I expect the series’ popularity to grow even bigger with the release of final book “Mockingjay.” Main character Katniss Everdeen has accomplished the unheard of by surviving two Hunger Games competitions, but will she be able to survive becoming the iconic face of the rebellion attempting to overthrow the cruel Capitol government? I am obviously a huge fan of the previous books, so I am incredibly pleased that the third book manages to maintain the emotionally charged, fast-paced plotting of the others. Adults and teens alike will be ripping through the story’s conclusion in one or two sleepless nights.

Among the quirky, fun instruments at Elderly Instruments is Red Hot Chili Peppers bass guitarist Flea’s neoncolored Fleabass ($499, $399 junior)

J

ohn Mayer, Lyle Lovett, Elvis Costello and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: What do these influential musicians have in common? They all found their dream instruments at Elderly Instruments in Old Town, Lansing. The locally owned instrument sales and repair shop, which celebrates its 39th anniversary this year, has grown into one of the world’s biggest dealers of vintage instruments. Elderly has also become a meeting place for local musicians to jam out on instruments, meet like-minded music-lovers and find just about everything they need to gig out.

Sam Pratt (above and right) plays a guitar in Elderly Instruments, which is a common occurrence in the store that specializes in music. Pratt is a guitar instructor at Elderly.

Step into the showroom on North Washington, and it’s easy to see why Elderly is a favorite stop: Guitars of every make hang from the walls. That’s not to mention mandolins, banjos, ukuleles and a collection of other music makers. On the high end, it has a 1944 Martin D28 — the same kind of guitar Hank Williams played — running $35,000. Even higher, a Gibson F5 mandolin for $250,000. Others may opt for the 1960 Gibson Les Paul Custom for $120,000 or a 1956 Gibson Les Paul Special for

$12,500. The store also carries more reasonably priced instruments ($100 and up) and models from all the major guitar makers. The connection between Elderly and one guitar manufacturer, C.F. Martin & Company, is especially tight. Elderly, in fact, is the No. 1 single-store seller of Martins in the world. It sells around 1,000 a year. “We have a special relationship with Martin, because they started out small, and as we kept dealing them, we got a reputation for quality service,” says Jeremy Rapp, who is the special events coordinator at Elderly. “Now people know they can buy a Martin from us and it will show up and be ready to play, and they don’t have to deal with any quality issues.” Then, there are quirky, fun instruments. Case in point: Red Hot Chili Peppers bass guitarist Flea has his neon-colored Fleabass ($499, $399 junior), or there’s also the Fender and Squier Hello Kitty guitar (around $200) online at Elderly.com.

JAM OUT Spontaneous jam sessions happen daily as employees and customers take instruments off the walls, plug ’em in and give ’em a whirl. That’s not always the case at shops that carry vintage choices. “I think a lot of people get freaked out by it, because they’re not used to being able to do that,” Rapp says. “That’s something the store has been known for since it opened. The main thing is that

you can pick up and play all the instruments here, all the time.” Local musician Randy Ladiski, who sings and plays bass guitar in metal band Dagon, goes to Elderly anytime he wants to try out a new bass. “The sales staff are always more concerned with making sure that you get the right instrument for you than with padding their commissions,” he says. As for famous clientele, Werbin believes that’s a reflection of Elderly’s credibility worldwide. “Being here so long gives us some advantage, because if we were selling bad guitars, I think most people realize we wouldn’t still be here, serving people.” Werbin’s favorite thing about walking up the steps into Elderly every day is being surrounded by music. “I love music. I play music. I get to work with instruments every day,” he says. “It’s not all I do. I still have to run a business, and that’s hard work. But it’s nice, because it’s like having a hobby you love very much and getting to work around it all the time.” For Rapp, it’s the customers. “You get such a variety from day to day with the people you meet, and a lot of them are just starting to make music, so it’s nice to see that and give them that means to express themselves,” he says. “Between the people who come in here and the employees, it’s a great place to be.”

Stan Werbin, who is the president of Elderly Instruments, believes one of the shop’s biggest assets is the respect its staff gives customers. “We have what they want at good prices, it’s a welcoming atmosphere and we also listen to them,” he says. “We’ve always listened, because it’s impossible to know everything about everything, so we love to talk with musicians to get their opinions.” The store serves musicians who play everything from bluegrass to punk to metal: “We don’t discriminate against any kind of music. Everybody has their own personal preferences in that regard, and we respect that,” he says. Werbin opened Elderly Instruments in 1972, after graduating from the University of Michigan. Early days were humble. “I started this in Ann Arbor with a partner, Sharon Burton, and the idea was to find old instruments at antique shops and sell them at a profit,” he says. “We came up with the name, Elderly Instruments because we were initially dealing with only old instruments. “We had the good fortune of meeting Ray Walsh from Curious Book Shop (in East Lansing), and he happened to say, ‘Hey, you have some interesting stuff here. Why not open a store?’ He told us about a hallway open in East Lansing, across from where he was at the time, and it was only $60 a month to rent.” That was something they could afford, so they took the plunge and never looked back.

(87 HOURS, 32 MIN, NOT RATED)

Whether you loved or loathed the revelation of the final episode (I lean toward loathe), “Lost” was a series like no other, and it helped change the way everyone thought about how television can tell a dramatic story. Over six seasons of varied quality, though for this show that means fluctuations between good and great, “Lost” told the tale of survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious, mythladen island. But as the story progressed, it became clear that all the fantastic machinations were just the means by which the survivors, particularly habitual “fixer” Dr. Jack Shephard, would find redemption. With “Lost,” I am squarely in the “myth” camp, preferring the intrigue and fantasy to the more overt, character-driven aspects. Unfortunately for me, the series writers were not. So while I am disappointed in a lack of resolution for so many intriguing mysteries, I still easily say that “Lost” remains my favorite dramatic show of all time.

Serotkin a Lansing native Even though singer-songwriter David Serotkin lives in the San Francisco Bay area, he calls Lansing home. He was born and raised in the Capital City and moved out to California at age 22 to pursue a career in music. Serotkin makes a stop Sunday at Gone Wired Café in downtown Lansing to release a new full-length, “Not Alone.” “I’m proud of how I’ve grown as a musician and songwriter, and I feel that this new album reflects that,” he said of the pop-rock release. “I’m thrilled to have gotten such great musicians to play on ‘Not Alone,’ including my brother, drummer Curt Stoneham. And I loved having the opportunity to create richer layers than on my first album, including cello on several songs and multiple vocal harmonies throughout.” Releasing the CD in Lansing is a must for Serotkin. “Lansing will always be a part of me,” he says. “I’m excited to be back playing in my hometown.” • CD release for singer-songwriter David Serotkin • 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29 • Free • Gone Wired Café, 2021 E. For subs, the bread is longer for a giant option, as well. We were both hesitant to get the regular size because we thought it wouldn’t be enough. Thanks to the cashier, we went with the regular size and were proven wrong. Melissa ordered off the deli menu, the No. 2 Grand River Avenue — pastrami, coleslaw and Russian dressing ($4.99) on wheat bread. Sandwiches come on double-baked rye, but it can be

We also shared a side of fries ($2.49). By the time we got our drinks and found a place to sit, my sub was already made. The sub came out warm and the bread soft. The meat was so juicy and flavorful that it would’ve tasted just fine without any of the other stuff in it. Melissa thought there was much more than three ounc-

Explore some new barley-and-hops brews

Blithering Idiot Barleywine

One of the best side effects of the craft beer explosion is the shattering of seasons. It used to be that bock beer was only available in spring, imperial stouts and barleywines in winter, etc. Although many breweries still release seasonal beers, almost any style can be found at any time of the year. I have no problem drinking heavy, strong beers in the summertime. No, I don’t drink them to cool off while chainsawing in 90-degree humid weather. But after dinner in an air-conditioned room? No problem. That’s why I was excited to discover Weyerbacher’s Blithering Idiot Barleywine a couple of weeks ago in a local store. It is still difficult to find barleywines in the summer unless they’re leftovers from winter stock. Weyerbacher offers its version year round. It’s labeled a “barleywine-style ale,” and Weyerbacher’s offering is probably the closest to an

authentic English barleywine that I’ve had from an American brewery. Blithering Idiot has the tawny color, medium carbonation and strong toffeeish, buttery caramel malt flavor that is common for the original style. There are some interesting fruit flavors in the background such as dates and cherries. The 11.1-percent alcohol content is a bit high (some barleywines are as little as 7 percent), but there is no strong alcohol aftertaste, and the beer still has a head. The hops are just right, adding enough bitterness to cut through the heavy (but not thick or syrupy) body and sweetness. Many people have not had the pleasure of drinking an authentic Englishstyle barleywine, which differs greatly from most American versions. I give kudos to Weyerbacher for staying true to a centuries-old style that most people have never had.

Todd Haefer writes about beer for Gannett. Some of the beers have limited availability. Check brewers’ websites.

THE LANDSHARK RAW BAR & GRILL 101 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, (517) 351-8973 Hours: 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily. BOTTOM LINE On any given Friday or Saturday, you can often find wedding parties, including bride and groom in full attire, celebrating after their reception ends, and this Saturday was not any different. As we were walking out, a wedding party was walking in. Know of a bar we should feature? Contact Mike Weber at LSJ@ELBar Star.com. More info, including other bar reviews can be found at www.EL BarStar.com.

Bar reviewer Mike Weber and friends polish off a Shark Bowl.

Landshark management swaps just before students arrive Wrapping up the downtown East Lansing bar tour, my posse and I hit The Landshark on Saturday. The bar had been closed most of the summer for renovations. Walls are now painted an aqua-blue color reminiscent of an ’80s Florida lanai, barstools and bar-rail pads are also new, and our group of men and women all enjoyed a much improved bathroom experience. As basement bars go, Rick’s is my top choice. I have nothing against The Landshark — it’s like being at Rick’s, only smaller and louder. There are a lot of MSU athletic types who hang out there (I’ve spent entire evenings with the MSU field hockey team and have seen football players make fools of themselves.) I can’t put my finger on why I don’t go to The Shark more often — I tend to reserve it as the spot to end the night with a Shark Bowl. Our night started out at two different places, then we headed over to The

Shark for a Shark Bowl, a combination of every clear liquor in the well, plus cranberry juice and 7-Up. You never taste the alcohol going down, and if you consume too many, you certainly will feel it the next day. These concoctions are best shared by a large group: We grab a handful of straws and time ourselves to see how fast we can get to the bottom of one. It was fairly slow when we got there at 12:30 a.m. The traditional Top 40/R&B/Rap mix was pumping out of

the speakers from the DJ, just like every other establishment in East Lansing on any given night. (You know how I feel about this.) My group and I polished off our Bowl and took a look around the place. The Shark has an oval “loop” that takes you around the stairs, with seating all around. There are two separate bars, the main one at the bottom of the stairs as you walk in, and the second by the dance floor/stage. Speakers are strategically placed at ear level as you walk around to ensure hearing loss the following day. I stopped in to talk with the management on Monday night to see about hours and drink specials and was surprised to learn The Shark was under new management. Nicholas Demasi told me that he and his partners took over that day. I’m looking forward to what they have to offer and what changes will be made. Just leave the Shark Bowls alone. They’re perfect in every way.

looking forward to seeing Mr. Mariotti get his deserved punishment … and I’m also excited that I can now watch “Around The Horn” without having to stare at his mug.

F IS FOR FOOTBALL

L IS FOR ‘LOVE DETROIT’

We’re on the very cusp of a football explosion. It’s time to call your friends in Ann Arbor and give them hell about their squad. It’s time to throw in on that weekly NFL office You-Pick-’Em pool. Head back to your alma mater’s homecoming and relish in the purest form of the game: high school action. Oh, and lest we forget the best part … Bust out that tiny Coleman grill, dust off the camp chairs and invest in a hefty supply of Solo cups: it’s most definitely time to tailgate. Don’t lie. You just got totally amped thinking about it. Also exciting? The Spartans are going to be legitimate contenders this season, and the Lions might win more games than you can count on one hand (in the same season!).

While his first season hasn’t been all rainbows and sunshine, Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon announced this week that he won’t be ditching the D. On Tuesday, Damon said, “I love playing for Detroit, the city, the fans and these teammates.” He blocked the waiver trade back to Boston, and solidified his place Damon as a clubhouse leader. While the Tigers have a serious mountain to climb in the AL Central division (5.5 games out of second place), Damon said he believes the team can make a final push. The Tigers still play first-place Minnesota and second-place Chicago 13 times (combined) — it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we could make a run. Keep those fingers crossed.

A NDI O S T ER S

We’ve got one more glorious week before the population of East Lansing balloons by nearly 50,000. Instead of showing my advancing years and writing about how nonplussed this prospect makes me, I thought I’d wax poetic about the things I AM excited about for F.A.L.L. in the sports world.

Last week, ESPN commentator Jay Mariotti was arrested for domestic assault. If you’re not familiar with Mariotti’s work, congratulations. You’ve managed to miss out on one of the most obnoxious personalities known to sports telecasting. Mariotti Perhaps the most ironic part of Mariotti’s arrest is that he’s been one of the most vocal condemners of athletes who’ve committed similar crimes. He has dragged names like Albert Belle, Randy Moss, Wilfredo Cordero and Jason Kidd through the proverbial mud after allegations arose about violence against women. The hypocrisy here is blinding. BIKE LIGHT POWERED BY PEDALING

|

While looking for a bike light that wouldn’t run through a gazillion batteries every month, I discovered the Reelight. It’s a light that uses your pedal power to run — no batteries required. You install two magnets on your bike spokes using a screwdriver, screw the light onto your hub, and an electric current is produced when the magnets pass the lights, which have a copper wire inside. Every time a magnet rotates past the light, it flashes. While it can be a bit tricky to get the magnets in the right position so they are close enough to the light, once on it is simple and effective to use. You never change batteries and never have to remember to turn it on or off. You just get on and go. It also is practically theft-proof because it’s attached so well to the bike. The website for Reelight, a Danish company, says the LEDs will last 100,000 hours, and the magnets, of course, don’t ever run out of power. The model I bought is the SL100, the simplest and cheapest ($39.99 on amazon.com). Other models can store

power so they stay on when you are stopped at an intersection (The SL120, $59), or they burn steadily instead of flashing (The SL150, $62.99 on amazon.com). I carry an additional light so I am not invisible to motorists while waiting at a stoplight. Also, the lights, while sufficient to make you visible to others on the road, are not bright enough to light your way. Read more at www.reelight.com. - Merrie Leininger

Green Day and AFI brought their highenergy punk to DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston on Monday. The sold-out show drew more than 15,000 people. NOISE was there to catch the action. For more on the music scene, check out www.lansingnoise.com/localmusicbeat

(SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23)

Don’t indulge in senseless melodrama. Mercury is increasing your tendency to get a little hot under the collar and to lash out when you feel threatened or annoyed. Try not to take out your frustration on your sweetheart if you’re simply in a bad mood.

Your creative side is taking over, thanks to the moon. You’ll be inspired to write a love poem or romantic letter to your sweetheart. Or, if you like music, you might decide to compose a romantic song in honor of your special guy or girl.

TAURUS

(OCT. 24 - NOV. 21)

SHRIMP AND POLENTA Prep: 20 minutes Cook: 10 minutes Makes: 2 servings 1 cup diced asparagus 2/3 pound raw shrimp, peeled, deveined, tails kept on for dipping 1 ½ cups prepared polenta 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 to 4 tablespoons hot water 1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated 1 teaspoon chili powder, or to taste Tabasco sauce, lemon wedge

• Prepare a grill or broiler for mediumhigh heat. Heat a small saucepan of water to a boil over high heat; add asparagus. Cook until just tender, 3 minutes. Drain. Grill shrimp until pink, about 3 minutes. Set aside. • Meanwhile, stir together polenta, olive oil and 2 tablespoons of the hot water in a large saucepan until polenta is smooth and soft; add more water, 1 tablespoon at a time, if necessary. Stir in tomatoes and ¼ cup of the Parmesan cheese. Heat, stirring occasionally, until warm, 3 minutes. Add asparagus; heat until mixture is warm and cheese is melted, about 2 minutes. • Mound polenta in center of two plates; sprinkle each with chili powder to taste, remaining Parmesan cheese and Tabasco. Place shrimp around edge of plates; squeeze lemon wedges over shrimp.

12 ounces whole wheat spiral pasta 1 pound lean ground turkey 1 medium onion, chopped 1 (24-ounce) jar gardenstyle pasta sauce 1 (14 ½-ounce) low-sodium diced tomatoes ½ teaspoon dried basil ½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 4 ounces sliced turkey pepperoni ½ cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

• Cook pasta according to package directions. • Meanwhile, cook turkey and onion in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until meat is no longer pink. Stir in pasta sauce, tomatoes, basil, oregano and Worcestershire sauce; set aside. • Drain pasta. Transfer to a 9-by-13-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle pasta with Parmesan cheese. Top evenly with sauce mixture and pepperoni. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. • Cover and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until cheese melts and pasta is hot. Makes 8 servings.

You’re feeling restless, thanks to an intense sun. If things are boring with your sweetheart, it could be time to stir things up a bit. Don’t just sit in front of the TV eating pizza on a Saturday night. Get out and do something together.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21)

You could find out that someone you thought was in your past is trying to become part of your future. Mercury is increasing passionate feelings between you and an ex. You’ll have to figure out whether it’s worth it to attempt getting back together.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22)

Mars is traveling through your sign for several weeks, and this will increase your confidence and sexual charisma. If you’ve been thinking about asking someone out on a date, you’ll find it easy to do so now. And in an ongoing romance, things will start to heat up.

LEO

(JULY 23 - AUG. 22)

You’re longing to spend time with a soulmate. If you’re single, you’re wondering if you’ll ever meet that special someone. If you’re with someone, you’re hoping that the relationship will keep improving over time.

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEPT. 22)

As Mercury slows down, it’s best not to make any sudden moves. Don’t get engaged or agree to move in with someone. Avoid talking about big commitments like getting married or having children.

SCORPIO Emotional Mars is increasing your tendency to obsess about your partner’s flaws. Don’t go to extremes. So your honey isn’t perfect. You aren’t, either. Have more of a sense of humor and forgive those minor imperfections.

LIBRA

(MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)

(APRIL 20 - MAY 20)

PIZZA PEPPERONI PASTA

Green Day lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong pumps up the crowd at the sold-out show with AFI Monday at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston.

ARIES

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)

Someone is falling for you in a big way. Venus is increasing your powers of attraction, and an acquaintance or business associate could be growing fond of you. You’ll have to decide whether or not you want to pursue this entanglement.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)

Mars will be opposite your sign for a few weeks, and this means you shouldn’t push yourself too hard. Don’t overwork, and don’t stress out if a relationship hits a rough patch. You need to relax, focus on improving your health, and maintain a positive outlook.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)

Just when you had your love life figured out, it all goes weird again. Venus moving opposite your sign is keeping you on your toes, making you wonder how your honey really feels about you.

PISCES (FEB. 19 - MARCH 20)

Sometimes you tend to be shy, but friendly Mars is making you extremely bold. You’ll find it easy to dominate your partner and get what you want in the bedroom. If you’re single, you’ll fearlessly seduce and amaze sexy new friends.
