100 percent in the artists. NOISE: Your new album, “Connect the Dots,” dropped in July. What subjects did you find yourself writing about on the release? Clark: Everything. I write about life and the things I go through, and that includes everything from disappointments to things that effect me personally to politics to careers to relationships. A lot of people have a misconception that I only write about love. It’s a lot deeper than that. NOISE: Out on the road, do you feel like one of the few girls doing music? Clark: We are definitely outnumbered. Statistically speaking, there are more guys in bands than girls. But I don’t feel less committed. You just have to be strong and driven and passionate. You have to really love it.

Stacy Clark brings a certain aura: one of high-spirited energy and old-fashioned, creative enthusiasm for writing folk-based pop songs. In recent months, that quality seems to have paid off. First, Clark booked a gig playing for 15,000 in her hometown of Buffalo, NY. That show also entailed opening for ’70s classic rock band America. “That was one of the most amazing shows,” she said, “because I was in my hometown, so it was so special to open for an amazing band in the town where I grew up.” Next, she inked a contract with Vanguard Records. That’s the same label behind American Idol’s Kimberly Caldwell, country legend Merle Haggard and Grammy-winning songwriting pair Indigo Girls. And now, Clark has hit the No. 7 spot on iTunes Pop Album chart, above Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Not bad for a girl who’s touring the nation alone

with her acoustic guitar. She stops by Mac’s Bar Friday. NOISE caught up with Clark as she was navigating busy Los Angeles traffic to talk about her new album, giving up everything to pursue art and why she writes about much more than love. NOISE: You moved from Buffalo to California when you were a teenager to pursue music. How did that move help your career? Clark: I think it helped in the fact there are more opportunities out here and a better chance of meeting people who can help you. NOISE: You just signed with Vanguard Records, who also represent Merle Haggard and American Idol’s Kimberly Caldwell. Excited? Clark: Yeah, I’m thrilled. Finding the right label is a process and negotiation. It’s like dating: You have to court each other to see if it’s going to work out. They get me, and they get my music. They’re not trying to change me. A lot of labels are like, “We really like your music, but we want you to look this way or sound this way.” They want to put you in a box to fit their needs. Vanguard is real, and everyone who works there believes

Gwen Stacy is known in the post-hardcore world as one of the biggest bands in the Christian music label. But, that doesn’t mean their music is only for Christians. “We believe there’s a certain respect everyone deserves, and we don’t think less of anyone who thinks differently than us,” drummer T.J. Sego said. “We’re not ashamed of our faith and we definitely talk about it, but we share the stage with people who don’t always agree with our views. “Our values are a huge part of why we do what we do, but as far as being pushy, we flat-out think that’s wrong,” he said. As Sego further describes it, he thinks people of all religions and backgrounds “get” their music: “A lot of our message is that even though we’re Christians, we can relate to you. What we write is really for everybody, because we write about a lot of different things.” The Indianapolis-based band, which reaches The Loft today, is trekking the country with a fairly new album in tow. “A Dialogue” came out on Seattle’s Solid State Records in December of 2009, serving up a thunderous metalcore mix of growling vocals, tumultuous, edgy guitars and hauntingly dark atmospheres. • Gwen Stacy, Amarna Reign, Siren the Escape, It Lies Within, The Red Handed • Doors 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2 • The Loft (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. WIN TICKETS TO A HOME SPARTAN FOOTBALL GAME!

Spartan tailgating gurus share what it takes for a pre-game party almost a decade, Dan and Anna Oginsky were happy tailgating near the Communication Arts and Sciences Building before Michigan State University’s football games. Anna said that’s because they didn’t know what they were missing. They moved to Lot A — much closer to the stadium and Sparty statue — several years ago.

Tailgater Dan Oginsky stands in front of the Sparty statue, near where he and his wife Anna set up their festivities on game days.

“When we moved to Lot A, we realized that there’s a parade, and the team comes through and the band comes through,” she said. “It’s so fun to see them. It gets you really pumped up for the game.” The Oginskys, now 37, are among the thousands of Spartan fans chomping at the bit to kick off tailgating season this weekend in East Lansing. It’s the All-American party, said Patrick Sutka, 43, of Wyandotte, whose tailgate party is a well-oiled machine that feeds more than 100 people on some game days. “Besides being able to relive our youth and pretend like we’re in college again every football Saturday, it brings us together and our families,” Sutka said. “My kids wouldn’t know my college buddies’ kids if it weren’t for Spartan football Saturdays.” Snagging the prime tailgate real estate requires getting up at the crack of dawn for noon games. “I like to get the best spot we can,” Dan said. “And you can’t line up and wait for the lot to open up, so you pretty much have to get there really close to 7 a.m.” “Sometimes we’re strategically circling the lot so that we’re not there before 7 a.m.,” Anna added. The Oginskys, of Brighton, meet up with a core group of about a dozen friends from their campus days. By 7:20 a.m., they’ve set up their canopy, table, camping chairs and grill.

Instructions: • Saute onion, spinach and chile pepper in a pan until onion is tender. • Beat eggs in a bowl, add to pan. Add in ham, onion and peppers. Reduce heat to medium-low, and continue cooking and stirring until eggs are scrambled and cooked through. • Warm spinach tortillas in the microwave for 30 seconds. Spoon mixture into the middle of each tortilla and top with shredded Cheddar cheese. Roll up like a burrito. - Source: Tricia Bobeda

TAILGATING TIPS • Recycle: MSU Grounds staff members wearing bright green vests will hand out free green-and-white garbage bags to tailgaters a few hours before kickoff. All fans are encouraged to deposit their trash in the appropriate receptacles and to do their part in keeping the campus “green and clean.” • Remember to stay hydrated and well-fed • Designate a driver

Now on Thursdays SEPT. 02 – SEPT. 08

TAILGATING SCHEDULE • When kickoff is set for noon or 1 p.m., tailgate lots will open at 7 a.m. • If kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., tailgate lots will open at 9 a.m. • For evening games, lots will open at 1 p.m. All fans are encouraged not to come before these times because traffic lineups are not permitted.

MSU TAILGATING OFFICIAL RULES • Munn Field is an alcohol-free parking area close to the stadium that is ideal for family tailgating. In the event of heavy rain, Munn Field will be closed. • No couches or upholstered furniture. • No kegs or other common source containers. • No drinking game structures and/or paraphernalia. • No trailers of any type including pig roasters. • Oversized trucks must park in RV parking. • Trash shall be disposed of in available receptacles. • No tents larger than 10x10.

For a Spartan-themed breakfast of champions that’s easy to eat with one hand while you hold a beverage of your choosing in the other, try this recipe for a green eggs and ham breakfast burrito (serves 6). You can eat them in the car on your way to the lot, or stack them in a Tupperware and then reheat them on the grill when you arrive. Ingredients: • 3/4 pound of ham or prosciutto, diced • 1/2 cup chopped red onion • 1 green chile pepper, seeded and diced • 6 eggs • 1 cup fresh spinach leaves • 6 spinach tortillas • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

SPARTY’S GREEN EGGS AND HAM

“Sometimes the best moments are when we’re there, the only people on the lot at 7 a.m., just kind of reading the paper and drinking coffee waiting for everybody to get there,” Anna said. Those moments of peace only last a few minutes before the deluge of Spartan fans stream onto campus. “People start to show up and the day starts to come alive,” Dan said. “The students start coming out on campus, the band’s walking by. Then it rolls up to game time and by that time it’s really busy out there.” About 20 minutes before game time, they break everything down and shove it back into the car. Priority No. 1 is to get into the stadium in time for kickoff. “It’s a pretty strong rule of mine to stay there until the game is over, no matter what’s going on,” Dan said. “No matter how bad we’re losing or how bad it’s raining,” Anna confirmed. “Dan is not a fair weather fan.” The couple brings its three young children to a few of the games, but often use football Saturdays as their “date day.” “Tailgating and going to the game is a really fun thing that Anna and I get to do together,” Dan said. “We don’t have a ton of time where just the two of us get to hang out, so the games tend to be something that we both have a passion about and get to share that together.” The Oginskys’ tailgate feeds anywhere from 20 to 40 people on any given Saturday. They try to mix up the menu and said it changes with the weather. They’ll start with grilling hot dogs in sweltering file photo hot weather this weekend. By the end of the season, they’ll Jason Rogalewski, Tassa Patrick, Tracie Rulewicz,

Zombie walk is a food drive for the Lansing Food Bank

It takes 29-year-old Steven Ward about an hour to turn into a zombie. Once he does, the Lansing resident has to spread a towel across the seat of his car so that the bloody handprints (made of red cake frosting) on the back of his leather serape don’t stain his car’s upholstery. He uses toilet paper and liquid latex to make his skin look more ghoulish. “This is new,” Ward said, picking at the gash made of frosting on his forearm. “I bloodied the serape last night before I went to class.” Ward is organizing the Downtown Lansing Zombie Walk. It starts at noon on Saturday at Ferris Park. The only requirement for participation is to bring non-perishable food items to the park, located at the corner of Walnut and Shiawassee streets. All donations will be given directly to the Lansing Food Bank, which will bring a collection truck to the park. The food bank can accept cash donations, too. From the park, the zombies will walk (those who are committed actors are likely to stagger) from the park to the lawn of the Capitol building. “Three generations in my family have been helping out the food bank,” Ward said. “As crazy as it sounds, it’s also a religious thing (for me).” Based on response to the event posting on Facebook and the quantity of fliers posted around town, Ward expects at least 1,000 zombies • Meet at Ferris to descend on Lansing this weekend Park in Lansing at to test his theory that the undead noon on Saturday, can help feed the living. According to Teri James Bellis, PhD., in her landmark book on Auditory Processing Disorder, When the Brain Can’t Hear, “as sound travels through an imperfect auditory pathway, words spoken to the afflicted listener may become jumbled, distorting original meaning and rendering those words unintelligible.”

When the Brain Can’t Hear When you think about a conversation with all the sounds, the inflections and tempo changes, it makes communication extremely complicated. When a hearing loss has been present and untreated, the ability to follow the conversation can become extremely difficult. Without receiving the appropriate stimuli, the brain stops processing sounds like background noise and can no longer filter speech clearly. Dr. Shea went on to say, “When presented with amplification, or hearing aids, speech understanding becomes clearer. However it is a continual process of improvement. Stimulating the brain with sound may help to overcome the auditory deprivation process, and getting help early is critical to a long term success.” Now, the goal is to do everything we can to maintain the speech recognition you have. The consequences of an untreated hearing loss are real. Since we collect sound with our ears and process the sound in our brain, over time and without hearing assistance, we can lose the ability to understand the spoken word. This documented process is called “auditory deprivation.”

According to and article in Post Graduate Medicine, by Dr.’s Shohet and Bent, “Loss of hearing is a national health problem with significant physical and psychological repercussions.” Although there is no cure for certain forms of hearing loss, many patients can be helped, especially when the problem is recognized early.” Wearing amplification (hearing aids) has been shown to help preserve the remaining hearing and speech clarity.

leypop, especially its doppelbock varieties, has gone the opposite direction with Supper Club Beer. It’s direct competition to the majors. I tried Supper Club along with a Pabst as a control sample, since Pabst was the overwhelming winner a couple of years ago in our 10-person blind taste test of popular American beers. There’s not much to tell — Supper Club had the tiniest extra hint of citrusy hops, while Pabst had the tiniest bit of a sweeter aftertaste. Other than that, they were indistinguishable. I guess that’s a compliment as far as Capital accomplishing what it set out to do. The biggest roadblock to Supper Club is its price. If a brewery is going to make a beer that tastes like a mass-produced one, $7.49 a six-pack (one price I saw) cannot compete with $15 for a 30-pack.

Capital Brewing of Middleton, Wis., recently introduced a new beer that is unusual for a microbrewery: a beer that tastes like what the majority of Americans drink. Most of the beer Americans consume are a combination of barley, rice and/or corn. The latter two are substantially cheaper than barley and are considered adjuncts, so a common technical term for such beers as Miller and Budweiser is American Adjunct Lager. Craft beer sales have been steadily increasing for years, growing from about 1 percent of the U.S. market to the current 7 percent, as recently reported by the Brewers Association trade group. The sales of Budweiser and Miller-Coors are still ridiculously huge, accounting for about 80 percent of the total U.S. beer market. The craft beer strategy so far has mostly been to provide quality beer without adjuncts. But Capital Brewing, makers of some fine bar-

$15 parking refunded with food at E. Lansing bar “In the beginning, there was Duke’s Shell, a happy little business on the corner of Harrison and Michigan, but inside loomed a spirit too strong to be caged by a mere gas station. So, in October of 1981 the Roadhouse was born. The evolution of the original building (including the use of service bay doors as windows) into what is now one of Michigan’s premier “fun stops” has taken years.” This is what you’ll read when you visit the Roadhouse website. It also explains why there’s an old Shell gas pump at the bar, and why there are so many license plates from all over the nation screwed into the walls. Yes, The Roadhouse is a great place to fuel up before and after sporting events, or just to catch up with friends. Now that football season is in full swing, consider tailgating at The Roadhouse. A $15 parking fee gets refunded if you order food inside, which anyone drinking at 8 a.m. is likely go-

ing to do anyway. Inside, you’ll find plenty of big screen TVs, indoor and outdoor seating, great food and of course, a bar. I’m no stranger to The Roadhouse. Their Jack Daniels Steak Chili, served year-round, is perfect for a snack anytime. I’ve often considered keeping re-

SOARING EAGLE CASINO & RESORT

Billy Idol, Slash tour stop Countless great songs have come out of the ’80s, but Billy Idol’s “White Wedding,” “Eyes Without a Face” and “Sweet Sixteen” are among the most enduring. The English rock musician leapt from underground punk sensation to pop star in mere years. The fame is partly thanks to Idol embracing the new MTV music video era, with his rock star good looks, flashy effects and pop hooks. Billy Idol plays Saturday at Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. Guitar thrasher Slash opens, performing with vocalist Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge). “Soaring Eagle is very excited to welcome two powerhouses of the rock world,” says Mike Dini, Advertising and Public Relations Manager at Soaring Eagle. “Billy Idol is such a dynamic performer, and we knew we had to get him here after we saw his performance on (WTTW concert television series) “SoundStage.” “And about Slash? What can you say about Slash? He’s a rock icon who’ll no doubt deliver a powerful show.” • Billy Idol, Slash, Myles Kennedy • 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 • Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, outdoor show (rain or shine), 6800 Soaring Eagle Blvd., Mount Pleasant, 888-7-EAGLE-7 • Tickets $40, $69, $79 available at the Soaring Eagle Box Office, all Star Tickets outlets, online at www.StarTickets.com or by calling 1-800-585-3737. SUB I Z A (MATADOR RECORDS)

With LCD’s overrated “This is Happening” keelhauling eardrums and dance floors, it is frustrating that the much more euphoric and danceable “Subiza” is mostly overlooked among the sea of DJs and rock acts taking a swipe at the turntables. Trading in the same Balearic vibe as fellow blissdance act jj, Delorean crafted nine tracks of dense, sonic release. While not heavy on vocals, and even lighter on substance, “Subiza” builds layer upon layer of samples, synths and beats, with the sole purpose of tweaking headphones and elevating a tangle of moving bodies. Along with Hot Chip’s equally potent “One Life Stand,” “Subiza” hearkens back to New Order’s masterpiece “Technique,” in style and execution. And that is no small compliment. A glistening dance-pop record that delivers hether you’re looking to augment your party playlist or generate a ‘back to mine’ wind down vibe, “Subiza” has the goods.

The charbroiled teriyaki chicken bento ($10) is a big meal in a box, with meat, tempura, vegetables, sushi, rice and more.

The decision to expand and relocate within the Hannah Plaza seems to have paid off for SanSu. The sushi spot has been in the new location for a couple of years, and it always seems to be busy, as it maintains its reputation as one of the top sushi destinations in the area. For college students, Tuesday nights are the time to go: Those with a student ID get 20 percent off their order. Be sure to check restaurant hours before you go, because SanSu is closed for a few hours in the middle of the day.

THE SCENE A good portion of the restaurant is regular chairs and tables. Just off the entrance, though, is an area with short tables and floor cushions for you to sit on. It’s a more traditional approach to eating in Japanese culture — and definitely worth a try sometime.

4750 Hagadorn Road, East Lansing 333-1933 www.sansu-sushi.com • 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 10 p.m. MondaySaturday • 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday

The spicy tuna ($5.50, left) and TNT rolls ($7) are both spicy rolls.

THE FOOD The SanSu menu, more specifically the sushi options, are quite extensive, with a variety of house specialities. There’s also a separate lunch menu that has roll combinations, noodle options, and beef and chicken entrees. Items from the lunch menu come with miso soup and house salad, except for Udon choices; the roll combinations also include side noodles. There’s a couple of bento selections, which are familiar in Japanese cuisine. It’s basically a meal in a box, where you get your rice,

fish/meat and vegetables all packed together. What I love about the bento is that it’s a little bit of everything — a mini buffet. At SanSu, I got the charbroiled teriyaki chicken ($10), which comes with white rice, tempura shrimp and vegetables, pieces of California roll, dumpling, and fruit, all served in a sectioned off lacquer box. The chicken was very tender and rested in the teriyaki sauce. I don’t like eating plain rice so it was nice I could spoon some of the sauce onto the rice to give it more flavor. For Kris, SanSu is his

go-to place for sushi. He swears by the fresh ingredients and consistently great service, and he again wasn’t disappointed. Kris ordered the TNT ($7) and the spicy tuna roll ($5.50). Each roll comes with eight big pieces. The TNT roll is a spicy roll — tuna, avocado, cucumber with pepper and hot sauce. The spicy tuna has tuna and avocado.

THE DAMAGE $22.50 (including tax, but not tip)

NEXT TIME I was extremely satisfied with my bento, so I’d like to try the salmon bento ($11).

be huddled over a pot of chili and hot cider. Tailgating is a big part of how the Oginskys stay in touch with college friends too. “We all have small kids, and things going on in our lives, but I look forward to that time of year especially because we see them so often and we all can catch up,” Anna said. Their food doesn’t need to have a Spartan theme — they leave the green and white to their apparel. One year for the Ohio State game, a Buckeye fan brought a plate of buckeyes to the tailgate. “Those were only acceptable because we were devouring them,” Dan clarified. For Sutka, the cuisine is a major part of the appeal. He and three others have been deemed godfathers of their tailgate. They’ll serve up seared ahi tuna, lobster tails and crab legs. They’ve even been known to deepfry a turkey. Feeding more than 100 people takes organization — that’s what makes Sukta’s e-mails (which border on novel length) so important. He divides up menu items and assigns them to each attendee. Without the list, they’d run the risk that the menu would be one pot of lobster tails and a half ton of chips and salsa. “It’s kind of like a tailgate newsletter as the season goes on,” Sutka said. “If someone does something silly or foolish, we’ll definitely cover it in next week’s email with the updated food assignments.” Sukta said the best way to describe tailgating at MSU is as the circus coming to town. “We’ve come a long way since eating (mostly) raw hamburger and potato chips out of the trunk of the car (as students),” he said.

MSU OPEN CONTAINER ORDINANCE All fans are reminded of the “open container” ordinance adopted by the MSU Board of Trustees. The ordinance bans open containers of alcohol on campus and in all public areas of campus buildings. However, on home football game days, enforcement of the ordinance will be suspended on campus for those of legal drinking age, during the hours parking lots are open for tailgating. Munn Field remains alcohol-free, as do the pedestrian areas immediately adjacent to Spartan Stadium as well as all public areas of campus buildings. Source: Michigan State University

When mutilated dog corpses, then human remains, are found in Venice Beach, city officials quickly blame a psychopathic cult. This seems reasonable enough, but mild-mannered science teacher Wayne Connors isn’t buying it. After discovering the true, horrifically radioactive nature of the killings and hitting a wall of disbelief with authorities, Connors realizes he must stop the carnage by confronting ... the Slithis. An atom age monster movie throwback (albeit with more gore), “Slithis” falls victim to that dreaded seventies genre movie trapping; the talky middle act. Exposition and “character development” don’t belong in a Z-grade Black Lagoon rip-off. Just set the stage, toss a guy in the suit, and let the mangling commence. Speaking of the suit, while the rubber budget clearly shows, it still somehow manages to vaguely creep you out. Cheap yet effective. If you dig retro sci-fi or creature features and aren’t clamoring for quality, “Slithis” is worth a gander.
