• Girl in a Coma’s name actually comes from a song called, “Girlfriend in a Coma,” by The Smiths. The Smiths was one of the band’s biggest influences starting out. • Girl in a Coma has toured with famed English singer/ songwriter Morrissey. “It was amazing. When we got the call to join the tour, we were excited and terrified at the same time,” drummer Phanie Diaz says. “We met him the first night, and he was so sweet to us, and he has great fans. It was a blast.”

Girls rule in pop-rock trio Anne Erickson | NOISE

Dressed in skull-decorated T-shirts and sporting trendy, ironed-out hairdos, the gals of Girl in a Coma aren’t your typical debutantes. But on the trio’s latest full-length, “Trio B.C.,” the group is proving the most important thing in rock has nothing to do with image: It’s the music. “I think getting out to the people and playing every night and getting into the music is the best part of this whole experience,” says drummer Phanie Diaz, who along with her sister Nina (vocals/guitar) and Jenn Alva (bass guitar) play Friday at The Loft. Girl in a Coma’s story starts small. The girls built their fanbase starting in San Antonio, Texas, playing anywhere they could, every weekend. After a year together, they decided to go on tour and left Texas with $500 in their pockets. Adventures ensued. Like the time they got stuck in San Francisco with-

out enough gas money to get back. “We would go into bars and have people listen to our CD, and if they liked it, they would pay for it,” Phanie says, laughing. “We raised enough money to come home that way.” Shortly after that tour, the trio was asked to do a pilot show for a Spanish/ English channel documenting what it’s like to be in an up-and-coming band. One of the segments was supposed to feature Joan Jett giving the girls tips on how to improve their music. Instead, after Jett saw them play a show in New York City, she was so impressed that she offered them a record deal on her Blackheart Records label. “It’s like a dream come true for a band, to get signed on the spot,” Phanie says. On the band’s latest album, “Trio B.C.,” power pop riffs stand against a surging backdrop of punky rhythms and gutsy, chick-rock vocals. Grammy winning producer Greg Collins’ (Gwen Stefani, U2) mix allows the

bass lines to pop and move with grease, while three-chord guitar arrangements give the music a punk rock flavor. Girl in a Coma’s forthcoming release, “Adventures in Coverland” (out Oct. 19), is a compilation of all cover songs from the band’s biggest influences: The Beatles, David Bowie, Patsy Cline, The Velvet Underground. “We wanted to show why we sound the way we do and to educate people,” Phanie says. “If there are some younger kids who don’t know who Joy Division is, we wanted to show those influences and teach them.” The cover album comes just one year after the band’s last release. Why the push to release new material so quickly? “We try to stay busy. Writing is a non-stop thing for us and we want to keep releasing albums,” Phanie says. “We want to be like a Sonic Youth and have 20 albums under our belt before we’re finished.”

Blackened Earth tour Those who watch music television channel Fuse on digital cable likely have seen Mistress Juliya. The exotic, dark-haired beauty hosted the network’s popular metal shows for years, and more recently, the “No. 1 Countdown.” Juliya also hosts the Slave to the Metal Music Festival: a national heavy metal music festival with the goal to nourish local metal music scenes across the United States by giving local bands a chance to play a high-profile event. Bands from each tour city are picked to perform, Mistress Juliya and Juliya hosts. The tour travels through Riverview, Mich., Friday and Saturday, and Lansing/Jackson/ Detroit-based Blackened Earth is playing. “We are really pumped about the chance to showcase at the Slave to the Metal Music Fest for Fuse TV,” lead vocalist Brian Osborne said. “It’s a honor to be picked out of thousands of bands. This is an excellent way to reach out to new fans and industry people.” In other band news, Osborne, Shane Lantrip (drums), Greg Snider (guitar) and Ray Smetana (bass) are recording a new, yet-to-be-titled album. Until that release, they’re riding high on the success of single, “This Is Your Pain,” which is being played as theme music for the national Mixed Martial Arts (M.M.A.) radio show. • Slave to the Metal Music Festival • 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11 • Rack N Roll Nightclub, 13634 Sibley Road, Riverview • $10 from Blackened Earth (www.blackenedearth.com); $13 at the door

mber Shinn and Josh Hovey live and work in downtown Lansing. They spend their days tied to computers and there’s rarely a lunch hour that doesn’t double as a meeting. Their careers are competitive and each has a Pavlovian response to the buzz of their Blackberries. That’s why sometimes — Thursday afternoons, to be exact — they slip away for a few hours and learn about spinnakers and sails. “It’s part of our slow plan to become pirates,” Shinn said. Shinn, 32, and Hovey, 27, who have been dating for 2½ years, love to hike, bike, kayak and ski. This summer, they decided to expand their outdoor repertoire and take sailing classes.

“Lake Lansing is just big enough (and) has enough diverse wind,” Shinn said about the Lansing Sailing Club’s location. “It makes you learn how to tack and deal with really variable wind in a short period of time. It’s a great learning experience in a relatively shallow space.” They’re grateful that it’s a less stressful place to learn than the ocean or Great Lakes. “As a person who’s totally new to it, showing up in the wrong shoes, and the wrong clothes, they were so nice,” Shinn said about the classes. “They take it down to kindergarten level. They’re very welcoming. They’re so excited to find new sailing buddies.” Hovey, a senior account executive at The Rossman Group, and Shinn, a public relations and marketing consultant, said living in Lansing gives them unique opportunities to get their “green fix” without driving for hours.

“YOU SIT ALL DAY AT A DESK. TO GET OUT AND BE OUTSIDE AND BE ACTIVE IS REALLY REFRESHING.” - JOSH HOVEY “I think it would be frustrating or disappointing in any other city that offers this much urban activity,” Shinn said. “You can get into serious woods really quickly.” And those nearby woods are a blessing and a curse for the smartphone-wielding couple. Instead of losing cell service on a hike, now it’s crystal clear. “I try not to have it on,” Hovey said. “But it’s tempting to just check in on email. When you do, it’s nothing that can’t wait when you think about it.” Rush Clement said plenty of Lansing residents make the half hour drive northwest to Portland to wander the river trails on weekend afternoons. His favorite way

to see the river — tubing — is one that is not conducive to taking phone calls. “It’s one of the nicest things about our town,” Clement said about the trails on the Looking Glass and Grand rivers that converge in Portland. He owns a business incubator in downtown Portland, and one of the businesses inside offers two ways to see the river. People can rent bicycles to ride the paved trails or inner tubes to lounge on the water from Portland Pedal Paddle. “We’ll take them out on the Looking Glass or Grand (rivers) and they float back into town,” Clement said. Hovey bought Shinn a mountain

bike for her last birthday to encourage her to take on the trails at Burchfield Park with him more this fall. She’s not so sure. “I’m not quite brave enough to go on the hardcore bike trails,” she said. “It’s crazy. Josh is a very proficient mountain biker. He’ll bike along things that I know I’d fall straight off of. Cartoonishly. It’d be like one bad Wile E. Coyote (episode).” Adventuring has always been more their style than participating in other recreational sports because it provides a chance to get outdoors. “You sit all day at a desk,” Hovey said. “To get out and be outside and be active is really refreshing.” Shinn said the rest of her life is competitive enough without adding that element to her free time. “It’s nice to just check out and be peaceful.”

Buddies Pub & Grill has locations in East Lansing, Okemos and Holt — each are ideal spots for football Saturdays if you’re looking to watch the game at a place that’s less rambunctious and farther from campus. Paul and I hit the Okemos location, on the corner of Marsh Road and West Grand River Avenue, to take in MSU’s season-opener Saturday.

THE SCENE The restaurant is separated into a bar area and another dining area. We sat in the bar section. There is no bad viewing spot in the bar area, as there’s a clear vantage point to a television whether you’re sitting at a table in the middle of the room or near the window, where we were.

The menu at Buddies is quite extensive: It took us about five minutes to read through it. Entrees range

from sandwiches to salads, wraps and their famous nachos. There’s also a separate menu for summer salads and oven-baked subs. I had a difficult time deciding, but went with the chicken veggie pita ($7.99). It came out very hot — nothing beats a warm pita. It was stuffed with grilled chicken breast, sauteed onions and green bell peppers, mushrooms and topped with Monterey jack cheese. A big side of crunchy,

slightly salted fries came with it. While the pita was filling and there was an abundance of ingredients, it needed some sort of dressing or sauce to give it more flavor. Paul had the New Orleans pasta ($11.99) that came with garlic toast and salad. The salad was brought out first, a big portion of iceberg lettuce, croutons, cucumber and cheese — and a strong, flavorful ranch dressing that I believe is

homemade. Paul was more than satisfied with the overall dish, which had chicken, Cajun sausage, green and red bell peppers, onions and penne noodles in a spicy sauce. The spicy level is pretty low. The garlic toast was more buttery than it was garlicky.

THE DAMAGE $21.18 (including tax, but not tip)

NEXT TIME Spinach chicken wrap — grilled chicken breast, spinach, bacon and ranch dressing in a spinach wrap ($7.99).

I know we are legion!), The Church is primarily, if not exclusively, known for its U.S. breakthrough single, the majestic “Under the Milky Way.” But long before that song crested (and its “Donnie Darko” fueled renaissance), The Church crafted an equally remarkable song for its debut album, “Of Skins and Heart.” And that song is “The Unguarded Moment.” The entire album is sturdy, melodic pop with a new wave slant, but the whole affair is overshadowed by “Unguarded Moment.” Surrealistic lyrics about “friends with cameras for eyes,” sung in Steve Kilbey’s detached but emotional way, ride an insistent melody of ringing guitar. The listener is left contemplative but also somehow inspired. Other tracks, like the buoyant “For a Moment We’re Strangers,” stand out but the core purpose of “Skins and Heart” is to deliver the flawless “Unguarded Moment.”

Nonpoint tour stop Nonpoint established itself in the alt-metal scene in the late-’90s, scoring top 25 rock hits “Bullet With A Name,” “What A Day,” and “The Truth.” By 2005, the guys inched into pop territory with their ubiquitous cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” Now with new lead guitarist Zach Broderick in tow, Nonpoint is back with a new release, “Miracle.” Recorded by Chad Grey and Greg Tribbett from Mudvayne, the album, packed with dropped D, hard rock riffing, entered the Billboard hard rock chart at No. 6 in May. When asked about his new role as Nonpoint’s guitarist, Broderick says the biggest challenge was writing in a way that would please current Nonpoint fans, while still putting his personal stamp on it. “I knew it was going to sound a bit different with me playing guitar, so that created a little anxiety about seeing how people would take the different sound of Nonpoint with a new writer in the band,” he says. “At the same time, I was confident about the process, and we ended up loving this record.” The Miami-based outfit plays The Machine Shop in Flint on Saturday, Sept. 11. • Nonpoint, Egypt Central • 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 • The Machine Shop, 3539 South Dort Highway, Flint, (810) 715-2650 • $15 in advance at etix.com Anne Erickson

DIRECTIONS: • Combine oil, lime juice, vinegar, sugar and crushed red pepper in a bowl. • In a plastic bag, combine red pepper, onion, pineapple, chicken and shrimp. Pour in lime marinade mixture, seal bag, and place in the refrigerator. Let marinate for about four hours. Just about any of your favorite kabob vegetables could be added into this recipe and will taste great (peppers, cherry tomatoes, etc.) • Heat grill to medium (about 350 degrees). • Using tongs, remove chicken, vegetable chunks, pineapple and shrimp from marinade. Alternate the pieces of chicken or shrimp, red pepper, onion and pineapple to fill each skewer. Do not mix chicken and shrimp on the same skewer, since they have different cooking times. • Tip: If you’re using bamboo skewers, remember to soak them in water for 20-30 minutes before use. • Place kabobs on the grill, cover with lid, turning occasionally. Chicken should cook for about 15 minutes, shrimp for 6 to 8 minutes.

“You know what Bruce Lee movies need? To be turned into a semi-musical, transported to a more ‘urban’ setting and all filtered through the high-gloss sound of ’80s Motown. And I’m just the man to do it.” Those had to be the exact words uttered by Berry Gordy when concocting the ridiculous, entertaining misfire that is “Last Dragon.” Plotwise, we have ‘Bruce’ Leroy searching for the mythical Master, longing for foxy VJ Laura Charles, all while preparing for a final showdown with the villainous, iconic, Busta Rhymes lookalike Sho’ Nuff. Heady stuff. The definition of camp, “Last Dragon” works because it takes itself at least 50 percent seriously. Nonstop fun from the first frame (and featuring some great tunes courtesy of El Debarge), “Last Dragon” is a shot of pure ’80s nonsense, and you owe it to yourself to see it.

Down for Lucious? Time Sanctions Courts failed in SPORTS

Explore some new barley-and-hops brews

Shiner Smokehaus

A visit from out-of-state relatives almost always means new beers for me to try, and my sister-in-law did not disappoint a couple of weeks ago. Tammi made her annual summer trip from Fort Worth, Texas, and brought some Shiner beers that I hadn’t seen yet this far north — Smokehaus and Shiner 101. They are both very good beers in different ways. Smokehaus is a German lager made with the addition of grain smoked over mesquite wood coals. Mesquite is native to Texas and its wood is commonly used there for barbecues. The beer is a good example of moderation — the smoked grain in a couple of German styles of rauchbier, or smoked beer, that I’ve tried, is overwhelming and seems best when eating grilled food. Smokehaus, though, has a more delicate smokiness to it that doesn’t explode your taste buds right off the bat, but slowly builds through the tasting before becoming more prominent in the aftertaste.

Our pop culture experts tell us what’s on their radar

B O O KS

‘I T O DD HA EFER beerman@postcrescent.com

What prevents the beer from being a gimmick is that the base lager is also quite nice, with the pale malt noticeable on the first sip with a hint of sweetness. This is a smoked beer that will not only go well with a variety of food but is fine just by itself. Shiner 101 was no slouch, either. This 4.6-percent Czechstyle pilsner was crisp, malty and had a nice grassy hop flavor throughout the tasting. It finished dry with a touch of bitterness, just like a pilsner should. It seemed to have a bit less malt and bitterness than most authentic pilsners, but I didn’t see that as a detriment — just a variation. Spoetzl Brewery beers are available in most of the country. Clicking on the “Spoetzl Brewery” link on its main web page will take you to another link showing distribution.

Todd Haefer writes about beer for Gannett. Some of the beers have limited availability. Check brewers’ websites.

handling baller’s underage DUI Sometimes, you come home from a long Labor Day weekend and have no idea what to write about for your weekly sports column. Sometimes you find yourself with fewer brain cells after said weekend. Sometimes your friends help you out. That said; here are some suggested topics thrown out on which I’d like to opine. Bear with me.

Drink For a Reason’ BY DAV I D C R O S S (GRAND CENTRAL)

I have been a huge David Cross fan since the days of Mr. Show on HBO in the mid’90s, through every awesome cameo and small role (my faves are his appearances on “Wonder Showzen”), up to his recognition as Tobias on “Arrested Development.” I’ve loaned out and played to destruction multiple copies of his stand-up double album “Shut Up You F*#@ing Baby,” including a recommendation given to Jeff Daniels before I realized what was coming out of my mouth. His first book — with another utterly fabulous title and now out in paperback — is most comparable to his stand-up routines as a wellread, witty and brutally caustic rant comic. While I admit that the book didn’t live up to every hope I had — at times his rants sound a little more selfdefensive than self-deprecating — it’s still very much worth a read and will elicit more than one audible laughter outburst. And any true Michigander won’t want to miss the chapter “Scrapbooking in Michigan!”

LUCIOUS IS AN IDIOT

I don’t necessarily agree with this sentiment, but I do think the kid made a serious error in judgment. MSU hoops junior guard Korie Lucious was arrested after being pulled over late at night near downtown East Lansing on suspicion of operating while intoxicated … which he was, and he’s only 20. His blood alcohol content was 0.09 at the time of the offense. On Friday, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving. In case you were wondering, it is illegal to drink under the age of 21, and even (more?) illegal to drink and drive. Makes you wish you were a D1 scholarship athlete, doesn’t it? You get to go to all the cool parties, wear the latest and greatest MSU duds, and skirt the legal system at will. I’m really hoping that sanctions imposed by Coach Izzo and the university teach Lucious a lesson, because the courts definitely failed.

Ohio State University and current member of the Harlem Globetrotters. Prior to his graduation in spring, Titus tweeted random thoughts, links to his sometimes unsavory blog posts, and general thoughts about college hoops and sports. Admittedly, the feed was entertaining and garnered quite a following (he has more 21,000 fans today). However, it became a major focus for me when watching OSU basketball. Like many things in the college game, Twitter allows for (as Titus proves) even mediocre athletes to usurp the notion of team. Titus, a self-proclaimed bench-warmer, was (and still is) more popular than many of his former teammates in the Internet world (think Greg Oden, Evan Turner and Mike Conley), despite his lack of personal success as a basketball player. Needless to say, it scares me to see that all five starting players for our MSU hoops team have Twitter accounts … riddled with spelling errors and tweets like this: “I’m not trying be a good college player, it’s about much more … that league money callin me I swear.”

GET HYPED FOR FALL

There are two football films that I feel the need to force you to watch again, if you haven’t already. There is nothing that gets me pumped for fall gridiron action like a decent sports movie involving (but not limited to) musical montages, yelled clichés and pubescent romance. For wholesome and Disney, pick up “Remember The Titans” and bask in the greatness of Denzel fighting racism, ridicule and rowdy teens in the 1960s. For raunchy grit, throw in that old VHS of “Varsity Blues.” Please, I know TO TWEET OR NOT? For me, the answer is tweet (@andio- you have it somewhere. Quarterback James Van Der Beek and rage-aholic Jon sters). Voight go toe-to-leather for a cuss-filled For many professional athletes, its 90 minutes to the tune of anthem-ish tweet ’til the cows come home (some’90s grunge rock.
