Local record label marks 50 releases Anne Erickson | NOISE

Lansing’s Bermuda Mohawk Productions (B.M.P.) eschews traditional record label routes and puts out creative, independent releases in true D.I.Y. fashion. Punk, alt-country, New Wave, edgy pop — it all resides on the homegrown imprint. Cale Sauter, who is the owner and co-operator of B.M.P., got his start on guitar before dabbling in the record label game. He still makes music (in area groups Cavalcade and The Cartridge Family). But now, he devotes much of his time and artistic energy to B.M.P. Artist/designer Craig Horky and booker Scott Bell run the label with Sauter, and B.M.P. offers a full line of services to its artists. The label releases vinyl and CDs from local and national artists such as The River City Rebels, Cheap Girls, Only Thunder, Wastelander and more — an average of six releases per year. B.M.P. started out in the early 2000s. At first, the operation was small.

“I was living with (Lansing musician) Ryan Tarrant, who recorded music. Craig Horky started doing design stuff, so we had a deal where a band would come to us, record with Ryan, get art done by Craig and I would press their CDs and make tees,” Sauter says. “As time went on, it really changed and we started getting into doing national releases, and it just grew.” Fans and friends will hear an entire weekend of B.M.P. musical mayhem at the third annual Mohawk Fest. The festival runs Friday and Saturday at Mac’s Bar and continues Sunday at a location to be announced at the Friday and Saturday shows. The show is, in Sauter’s words, “mostly a thank you to our local friends and supporters and a way to offer a full weekend of entertainment for them.” Sauter says he’ll be playing tracks from an upcoming B.M.P. compilation disc at the show: “We’ll give people a sneak preview by playing them over the PA.” He’s stoked for the lineup. “I’m excited Mustard Plug is playing, too. It’s kind of symbolic, because one of the things I saw when I first moved here was Mustard Plug playing outside of the College Store at MSU. It feels full circle.”

DETAILS{ • What: Bermuda Mohawk Productions is a local, independently owned, all-service record label. • Friday, Sept. 17: The Arrivals, The Slow Death, Young Dan Tucker and a surprise guest, 6 p.m. Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 484-6795, $7. • Saturday, Sept. 18: Mustard Plug, Jason Alarm, CBJ, Chernobyl Babies, Ailat, Quicknote, more, 5 p.m., Mac’s Bar, $10. • Sunday, Sept. 19: Featuring a cookout and surprise guest acoustic artists, this show will be held at a secret location to be announced at the Friday and Saturday shows.

Despite the ups and downs that go with starting any business, Sauter is unequivocally proud to be part of a group of people who are bringing fresh entertainment to mid-Michigan. “The mission from the very beginning was to create an umbrella environment where all the creative and motivated people I knew could work together to make something tangible,” he says. “That’s why we do the shows: to keep things interesting here in town. We like to give people a chance to hear some good, fun, creative stuff.”

BY E MM A D O N O GHU E (LITTLE, BROWN & CO.)

I have been talking about this book non-stop since I first read it last May (one of the fabulous perks of working at a bookstore). Now you all have been blessed with an early release date, so you too can read the best book I’ve read this year. That’s right, the BEST. I’ve already read it twice. “Room” has already received incredible critical (and bookseller) buzz — including its recent inclusion on the Shortlist for the Man Booker Prize (the Brits’ version of the Pulitzer) — and I’ll eat my shorts if it doesn’t make many best-of lists come year end. The gripping novel unfolds entirely from the perspective of Jack, an utterly charming 5-year-old who has lived his entire life within the confines of Room, with only his mother and companions like Chair and Rug to keep him company. The grim story of a woman and her son held captive becomes a touching exploration of motherhood and human resilience under extreme circumstances. I could not put this down, and you won’t be able to either.

ond-year phenom quarterback Matthew Stafford got bounced out of the game with a partially separated shoulder after a somewhat decent sack that lead to a fumble and ensuing Bears possession. Stafford, our crown prince to the tune of $70 million a year, has now played in a total of 11 games and gotten hurt in four of them. It appears that he’ll be out for a considerable amount of time. There’s chatter in the media about Stafford being “weak” and “frail” and “not built for the rigors of professional football.” I can’t buy into any of that quite yet. Much like I can’t buy into any drivel about U-M QB Denard Robinson winning the Heisman Trophy. Both sentiments seem a bit clairvoyant to me. Stafford has had some serious bad luck on the injured list, but isn’t part of that because he’s in a Lions uniform? As head Coach Jim Schwartz has to know by now: there’s no easy road to travel in Detroit. The going may be a little rougher without MStaff at the helm of his offense, and team morale will need multiple 5-Hour Energy shots this week before facing the Eagles on Sunday afternoon. But there were glimmering moments of hope when the defense stopped Chicago time after time after time, or when viewers finally looked at Calvin Johnson and went, “Whoa, that dude is really tall and really fast and really good.” I’m still gunning for seven wins. Call me an eternal optimist, or mentally unstable, but I truly think we’re capable of it. The Lions are one year away from being a legitimate contender in the NFC North, and this year’s road will be rough but worth it — for all of us.

Last weekend gave pro football fans in Michigan one of the great moments in recent Lions history: a game-winning drive. Down by five late in the fourth quarter, our boys pushed downfield on the arm of Shaun Hill (who!?), back-up quarterback and complete stranger to everyone. Then, with one final hurl into the corner of the end zone, gargantuan wideout Calvin Johnson leapt into the air and caught the probable game-winning touchdown. I also did some leaping at that time: from my couch to my kitchen and back to my couch when I heard the inevitable. The infuriating realization that there was a problem with the play, justification for us to lose another road game, and further reason for everyone to doubt that Detroit is on the up-and-up. I was livid. To clarify: I wasn’t livid with the call. Officials can only enforce the rules given to them; and the crew officiating the game did exactly that. The rule is clear, and I believe that their interpretation and application of the rule in this situation was accurate and fair. And now that I’ve made my conciliatory sportsmanlike comment in three sentences or less … The rule itself is complete and total bull fecal matter. The NFL is now charged with viewing this catch (and others) where the officials on the field are held accountable for a shoddy rule about process that needs to be clarified, amended, or given a healthy dose of Wite-Out in the books. Regardless: no change in the rule is going to give us our first road win in three years. Working in reverse chronological order, there was another significant incident in the Lions game this past weekend that will factor heavily into our success, or lack thereof. Still-unproven sec-

Larry McCray Greg Nagy (7:30 p.m.): Originally from Flint, he caught local attention in Root Doctor. Now on his own, Nagy has drawn praise for his guitar work, writing and voice; this year, he drew a Blues Music Association nomination. That’s the beauty of blues, he said; “I can be a 47-year-old bestnew-artist.”

(9 p.m.): In the 1970s, he says, blues music was scarce in Saginaw. “It’s been like an underground thing.” He worked on a General Motors assembly line and finally had an album in 1991. “This stunning set was a convincing hybrid of blues, rock and soul,” Bill Dahl wrote in allmusic.com.

his was not a spot where you’d expect guitar greatness. Jim Karshner was visiting an Old Town nightclub, once called Rendezvous on the Grand. “The place was totally empty,” he recalled. “There was this Rastafarian-looking dude playing.” That was E.J. Phillips, whom Karshner had just heard about. “The next song, he launched into ‘Voodoo Child’ and just blew me away .... I hadn’t heard anything like that since (Jimi) Hendrix.” It was the start of a friendship that continues into this weekend’s Old Town BluesFest.

It’s also a reminder that surprising blues talent shows up here. “We’re lucky,” said Frog (that’s his musicworld name), who is organizing the all-star band that closes the festival. “There are a lot of really good players in Lansing.” Greg Nagy, who spent a few years in Virginia, agreed. “You have to move away for a while,” he said. “You see other cities and you think, ‘Wow, what a depth of talent we have here!’” That talent — homegrown and visiting — will be in town this weekend. “Our idea has always been to have a big party for Lansing and have all the best people,” said Mike Skory, who organized it.

Twyla Birdsong Birdsong grew up with church music, but didn’t start singing on her own until 14. “I always thought I could sing,” she said, “but I wasn’t sure if anyone else thought so.” She doesn’t know if she’s related to Cindy Birdsong of the Supremes, but loves the name and adopted it. “It was my mother’s name. I was always jealous of my cousins with that name; then I thought, ‘Hey, I’m a Birdsong, too.”

Frog has been a key to the local music scene since arriving in 1976, as part of Shotgun Express. He leads Frog & the Beeftones and assembled the all-stars. “I decided to use two piano players (Mike Skory and Doc Yankee) because we’ve got two really great ones,” he said. He’s adding singer Jill Messing and harmonica player Bill Richards, plus Art Phelps, a fellow Beeftone.

This Virginia singer is new to local audiences, but she’s been compared to the late powerhouse Koko Taylor. Alex Henderson of allmusic.com calls her a “gritty, big-voiced blues singer who can also handle soul and gospel.”

Big Ben’s Acoustic All-Star Jam The host of “Accidental Blues” on WDBM (88.9-FM), he’s assembled a combo that includes Big Willy, Will Rideoutt, Eric Payne and Ramsey Hussain. At various points, they’ll be joined by pianist Doc Yankee, harmonica players Andy Wilson and Bill Richards and more.

Lee’s guts, guitar endeared him to New Orleans blues scene For a while there, Bryan Lee was an extreme outsider. Fresh from small-town Wisconsin, blind and living alone, he was sampling New Orleans. “I was young, I was great with the cane, I was Hell on wheels,” he recalled. He brought guts and a guitar. People asked him to sit in. “I just couldn’t get over the hospitality.” Now, 28 years later, Lee is embedded in the city. “He’s considered a New Orleans institution,” Richard Skelly wrote in allmusic.com. He’s so entwined in that city that people assume he’s always been there. “I was really surprised to hear he’s from Wisconsin,” said Mike Skory, who booked him as a blues festival headliner. Lee’s hometown, Two Rivers, is a paper-factory town of 13,000, along Lake Michigan.

Both parents were factory workers, but his mom was almost a band singer. Lee — who lost his sight at 8 — got a guitar at 11 and started singing at 13. He already had found the blues, listening to latenight, Southern radio shows sponsored by record stores. Soon, he was ordering records from them. “Stamps were three cents, maybe five cents then.” Lee made pilgrimages to Chicago and in 1979 visited Louisiana. Three years later, he was considering a move. “I found there weren’t any knock-out guitar players. I thought, ‘Wow, I’d love to move there. It’s February and not too cold.’” He led a house band until the sheriff closed the club. Even in New Orleans, it seems, it’s against the law to hot-wire utilities. That’s when Lee began

touring the city’s music scene, with cane in one hand and guitar in the other. He became a key part of New Orleans, which was a good thing — until recently. “Since Katrina, it’s changed so much,” Lee said. “A lot of the club owners took the insurance money and got out; a lot of the new owners don’t care about traditional music.” In the five years since the hurricane, hip-hop has grown here and the blues have slipped. In October, however, he’ll start leading the house band for a Bourbon Street spot called The Saloon. That will be a relief, Lee said. “Man, I’ve been travelin’ a lot since Katrina.’” And sometimes, he travels to a spot where bluesmen are greeted festively. — Mike Hughes

Why would the Southern-bred blues sound do well in Lansing? People talk about: w Schools. “Lansing is very lucky to have the colleges,” said Larry McCray. “They have a wider spectrum of music.” w Clubs. Bryan Lee, now a New Orleans star, talks about stops at Rick’s in East Lansing and the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Nagy recalls years with the Acme Jame Company, the house band at the Green Door. w The lure of Elderly Instruments, an Old Town spot with a national reputation. “It’s a magnet,” Frog said. “I’ve met a lot of people I wouldn’t have met otherwise — Bill Kerchen (the guitarist on Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln”), Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett.” w And the draw, a generation or two ago, of Michigan’s factories. When McCray was 11, his family moved from Arkansas to get factory work in Saginaw. He got a guitar and learned to play a kind of music that is at the core of Americana. “The blues is the crux of everything that’s rock ‘n’ roll,” Skory said. “When you hear E.J. Phillips, he sounds like Hendrix. When you hear Larry McCray, he sounds like Greg Allman. When you hear Twyla Birdsong, she sounds like Queen Latifah.” The difference is that they have to scramble more. McCray had factory jobs. Frog — like many talented musicians — works at Elderly. Birdsong got her first singing job from a co-worker at Fisher Body. Nagy (a fulltime musician) jokes that he and his wife (a pharmacist) have the perfect jobs for seeing the country. “She can work anywhere; I can be out-of-work anywhere.” And Phillips? In New Orleans, he was a waiter. “I didn’t start playing the guitar until I was 20 or 21.” He played it well and got gigs in Fort Wayne and Lansing and more. Karshner heard him in that near-empty club and promptly told people. “The next night, we practically filled the place.” Phillips had lots of Northern friends; he needed them, after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. His brother joined the evacuation with their mother — who was leaving Louisiana for the first time, at 82. Phillips stayed with the house, until the levees broke; then he headed to the Superdome and frustration. “We were standing in line, in the heat, for hours and hours.” Friends helped him get a new guitar and new gigs; he provided a new attitude. “I’m much stronger now, much more aggressive,” he said.”My music is harder than before the storm.” Now he and others will be at the festival, which may be a natural habitat for the blues. “There’s nothing like playing music outdoors,” McCray said. “Most musicians love it; it’s freedom.”

Musical to help rebuild Owosso theater

Garrett Bradley has performed on big stages, black box theaters and in the bellows of cruise ships. The 26-year-old is between shows now and returned to his hometown Owosso for the summer to co-direct and choreograph the Owosso Community Players’ latest “Back to Broadway” revue. Bradley joins a group of performers who’ve come together for the “Out of the Dark” benefit show. All proceeds will go toward rebuilding the town’s iconic Lebowsky theater, which a fire destroyed in 2007. “It’s brought a group of people together from the past of the theater and the present of the theater,” Bradley said. “Everybody really wants to see this happen.” The show includes songs from shows new to Broadway like “Avenue Q” and “Spring Awakening” and recent revivals like “Hair.” NOISE spoke with Bradley during the

production’s hectic tech week, where the cast and crew spent any free moments between musical numbers adding the finishing touches to the new studio theater space where the show will perform this weekend. NOISE: You shot a cast photo inside the burned Lebowsky theater. What was it like being inside the space? Bradley Bradley: All of us the first time we went in there got a little choked up. The theater for me was my second home. They let me start directing at a young age, I directed my first show when I was 18 there. I lived in that theater. I hadn’t been inside it since the fire. I’d driven by it a lot, but I’d had not been inside. NOISE: The studio theater is still being built around you. How does that affect rehearsal? Bradley: I wouldn’t have it any other

way. The theater is becoming a great space. Now every seat in this intimate space is a great seat. NOISE: How did you pick the music for the show? Bradley: So many exciting things have happened on Broadway since 2007 when the theater burned. We wanted to focus on those new shows and recent revivals. NOISE: What’s the best part about coming back to work with Owosso Community Players on this show? Bradley: Working in the entertainment industry is so difficult and sometimes people view it as a job and forget how much fun it is. That’s why it’s so great to work with people who make it a priority. There are extremely talented people who could be doing this as a career who are doing something else. We have people who work full-time jobs and then come and dedicate hours upon hours every day to do this show. They truly have such natural talent and that blows me away.

The combination of organic, locally grown ingredients on a pizza that’s made in a traditional brick oven can’t be beat. Pizza Pi in East Lansing opened just in time for the start of the new school year. While I thought at first it was on the pricier side, ($8-$12 for a 10-inch pizza), I cared less about the cost after leaving satisfied.

THE SCENE Pizza Pi is hidden from the main Grand River Avenue drag. It’s next door to Rice Kitchen, taking over the part where Flat’s used to be. There’s seating for about 10-12, so I’d imagine it’s popular for the delivery/takeout crowd.

Devil’s Backbone

The Real Ale Brewing Co. has been in operation since 1996 and is located in Blanco, Texas, about an hour west of Austin and an hour north of San Antonio. The brewery’s Devil’s Backbone is a Belgian-style tripel that made its first appearance this year in bottles and is a welcome addition to the ranks. It’s a nice yellow-gold color with a fluffy white head and medium carbonation. The flavor profile of the ale is on the side of light fruit, such as pears, with some orange and banana hints to it. It’s a tad sweet, but some strong, yet delicate, hops at the end provide a dry finish that balances the beer. The malt profile is prominent and light on the tongue with a lingering mouthfeel that is pleasant, not cloying. The ale has esters that would make you think that it has spices such as coriander, cloves and orange peel in it, but that is not the case — all those aromas and flavors are provided by the yeast. Real Ale stays traditional with the tripel, using Saaz hops and Belgian can-

di sugar, a type of hard candy, made right at the brewery. The grain and hop flavors are fresh and the whole product comes across as high quality. The brewery has slowly been growing since it started, but its beer is only distributed throughout Texas. My samples came from a visiting relative who lives in Fort Worth, so when those are gone, I’ll have to wait until next summer for some more malty goodness from the Lone Star state. I recently received some new statistics from the Brewers Association trade group on the state of craft brewing in the U.S.: “The number of U.S. breweries is at its highest level (1,599) since before Prohibition. In 2009, overall beer sales decreased 2.2 percent, while the craft brewing industry grew 7.2 percent by volume and 10.3 percent by dollars.”

Todd Haefer writes about beer for Gannett. Some of the beers have limited availability. Check brewers’ websites.

Live music keeps playful atmosphere outside ‘campus bars’ Although technically in East Lansing, Reno’s East is off the beaten path in terms of student-frequented bars, which can be a good thing. I’m no stranger to Reno’s East, normally going there with a group of friends after geek outings — user groups or meet-ups and the like. But hanging out with some old college buddies on the tiki-style patio on a random Tuesday presents a whole different side to Reno’s. One I really liked. The evening started with a text from my buddy Topper, who had been there for at least an hour with his friends. They had grabbed a table near the entertainment for the night, a singer/ keyboardist/guitarist with a drum machine. It might sound cheesy, but it really worked. I grabbed a burger on a pretzel bun (Why don’t more places serve pretzel buns?!) and a Labatt Blue Light on tap, $11 total, and tried to play catch-up with the group. While Bobby Standal was playing,

Topper, a notorious flirt, was chatting up the table next to us. The unsuspecting ladies, a group of 40-somethings with their mom, had no idea what was in store for them. When one of the ladies got up to dance to a Journey song, Topper decided the woman needed a dance partner. “Kim” (names were changed to protect the innocent) was immediately game for his shenanigans. Needless to say, ballroom dance moves busted out, complete with the Big Dip at the end.

But the dance party didn’t end there. Topper, after buying a round of shots for our table and the birthday table next to us, got several others to hit the dance floor later in the night. Seeing that Mom needed to get her boogie shoes on, Topper asked her to dance. Nothing like a 20-something guy dancing with a Centrum Silver cougar. That aside, Reno’s East has a solid selection of Michigan beers on tap, including North Peak Brewing Co.’s Archangel Summer Wheat, Frankenmuth Brewing Co.’s Hefeweizen, Atwater Block Brewing Co.’s Dirty Blonde and Dark Horse Brewing Co.’s Sapient Trip Ale Belgium Style. The usual suspects are there as well, Oberon, Two Hearted, Founder’s Pale Ale, as well as 312 and Blue Moon. If you decide to head inside, there’s ample seating, a large banquet type area and plenty of TVs to go around.

Weezer HUR L E Y (EPITAPH)

Weezer’s latest album, “Hurley,” is full of the same high-energy quirk rock that got the band to this point in their career. It’s a passable release, but it firms up the notion that they have little interest in moving beyond their proven peppy formula. A quiet intro, followed by a little Rivers Cuomo vocal groundwork and a buzz saw guitar attack and presto! you’ve just described nearly every Weezer song ever written. The thick-rimmed, altrock set gobbles them up, so why ruin a good thing on “Hurley”? No reason to, evidently. The first single off the album, “Memories,” leans on a fondness for days gone by. “Playing hacky sack back when Audioslave was still Rage (Against the Machine),” Cuomo sings, yearning for the late 1990s and some sort of high-water mark of artistic ethos. “Memories” is a good song and rightfully the single to put forth for radio consumption. But it’s middling from there. “Ruling Me” is a love song full of hackneyed phrasing and timeworn turns. “Hurley” works by Weezer’s established standards, but barely. Mostly, it comes off like a Best of Weezer compilation, with all new material. You’ll swear you’ve heard this before. Ron Harris | Associated Press

Decade for Metalcore band Few bands have the good fortune of celebrating a decade together without killing each other off first. Know Lyfe is one of the lucky few. The Lansing-based metalcore band celebrates its 10th anniversary Saturday night, Sept. 18, at The Loft in downtown Lansing. Know Lyfe mixes scream-sing vocals and a hardcore guitar attack with pop-metal hooks, creating a musical cocktail that goes from melodic to abrasive in moments. As for the longevity, vocalist Alfonso Civile says the group has managed to keep united by staying rational and finding alternatives to fighting when things get crazy. What’s the best memory for Know Lyfe, thus far? Playing alongside major-label bands such as Atreyu, Lacuna Coil and Demon Hunter had to feel good. And getting booked on the Vans Warped Tour multiple times. But above all, it’s the fans. “For me, it would have to be the general idea that we have come so far and done so many amazing things by simply putting our minds and hearts into this and just doing it,” Civile says. • “Know Lyfe 10-Year Anniversary Party” with Know Lyfe, Adrenachrome, Fifth Sin, Atrium, Coal Mine Canary, MC Jackyl; Presented by Raza Clothing • Doors 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 • The Loft (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. 2 0 T H C EN T URY F O X “Glee” was one of the breakout hits of the 2009-2010 television season for good reason. The writing is clever, the performances are strong and the music is just plain great. The show centers on the members of a show choir at a fictional Ohio high school, and the first season follows their efforts to keep their alwaysstruggling program afloat long enough to win at sectionals. Key players include choir director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison); his star performer, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele); jock-turned-singer Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith); and Finn’s girlfriend, Quinn (Dianna Agron). Also playing an important role is Jane Lynch, a wonderful comedian who gets to ham it up as the pompous school cheerleading coach. Each episode of season one features a handful of beautifully orchestrated songs, and a number of them became hits on iTunes. If the music and cast don’t win you over, the storytelling might because “Glee” is filled with oddball characters and the type of wacky plotting that always keeps viewers guessing. From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, metered parking spots at Washington Square and Allegan Street in downtown Lansing will become a creative public space. The public is invited to come use the space and take part in activities as part of the event. The one-day event’s goal is to encourage participants to re-think how space is used in cities by temporarily creating public art and park space in parking spots. “We want to encourage people to think creatively about the possibilities for using space in Lansing,” said Sean Mann of Let’s Save Michigan. “Gardens, parks and playgrounds are so important to healthy, thriving urban communities and this is an opportunity to initiate a public conversation about how we develop as a city.” PARK(ing) Day started in 2005 when an art and design studio in San Francisco transformed a single metered parking space into a temporary public park. On Park(ing) Day 2009, 700 parks were created in more than 140 cities in 21 countries. “Lansing is developing really innovative approaches to revitalization — we can truly become a model for building a livable city,” said Lansing resident Rory Neuner, state network manager for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. • For information about PARK(ing) Day, go to www.parkingday.org
