Indie rock band Mike Mains & The Branches spent the past four months touring in support of its debut full-length, “Home,” and if you ask Mains for a favorite memory from the road, he rattles it off quickly and definitively. “The best moment was in the end of July, when Matt Baird [lead singer in posthardcore band Spoken] at the end of our tour walked up to me and gave me a real nice mic, because he noticed I had a crummy mic,” says the Owosso-based lead singer and guitarist. “He said someone really special gave him that mic, and he wanted me to have it. That was his way of saying, ‘I believe in you. I believe you’re going to make it.’ “That experience shaped the enthusiasm with which I approach this career. When someone like him, who’s been touring for 14 years, says they believe in what we’re doing, that means a lot.” Mains, Shannon Bolanowski (vocals, keys), David Denison (drums) and Jacob Burkhart (bass guitar) definitely have enthusiasm for
their music. No one can deny the path they’ve taken — giving up their jobs and spending months on the road — hasn’t been easy. But it was the only way to go. “We figured we had to go for it, and we go out in faith, believing we’re going to make ends meet,” Mains says. “It’s been awesome so far. On nights where we don’t get a solid guarantee through the venue, we usually do well enough in merchandise sales to pay for the tour.” For Mains, the sacrifice is worth it. “It’s the dream of all of our lives to be touring, and it’s something we’ve been longing to do since any of us can remember,” he says. “It’s a blast. You meet so many new people and it’s such a learning experience. You learn a lot about who you are, the people around you.” Musically, Mike Mains & The Branches brings the best of its influences together — Mewithoutyou, The Killers, Modest Mouse — and mix in its own ideas, packing rambling, shambling guitar exercises into straightforward indie rock. As for songwriting, “Home”

is a conceptual work of sorts about youth and longing for understanding and meaning in the sense of self-fulfillment. The album, recorded at First Street Studio in Cleveland, Tenn., shows Mains as a mature lyricist . “I think overall the theme of ‘Home’ is communicated well, as far as the human spirit’s desire to connect with its surroundings and make sense of this life,” Mains says. At the core of the group, which plays Mac’s Bar on Friday, Sept. 24, is an unwavering desire to make a positive difference with their music. “We play music with a goal to allow the faith we have affect people through our music,” Mains says. “We’re all Christians and Christianity definitely plays a role in the music we write, but my goal is to share my views and the love I have for Christ with the world without coming off offensively.”

Hawking says that when he wrote “A Brief History of Time” (over 20 years ago!), it left some crucial questions unanswered, including why there’s even a universe in the first place. It’s the big WHY that shapes this volume, presented in a beautiful package, with color illustrations throughout. It’s definitely heady stuff, but Hawking does his best to make it intelligible, starting from the very nature of scientific thought and its evolution through human history, before diving into the notion of reality as a whole, merging scientific fields with philosophical thought to lay the groundwork for the overarching theme of the book, M-Theory. (Don’t even think I’m going to try to summarize in a paragraph what he develops through an entire book — suffice it to say that it stands for a view he calls modeldependent realism, which he says is “the only viable candidate for a complete ‘theory of everything.’”)

After losing the weight, the 26-year-old Grand Ledge resident noticed a lump in her breast during a self-exam. “(I wonder) if I had not lost the weight, would I have found it?” Mason said. Probably not, she’s concluded. It wasn’t a large mass, and even after she found it, it took doctors months to determine it was cancer. Mason is one of the youngest women to take part in Terri Shaver’s “Be Bold, Feel Beautiful” photography project. Shaver has photographed more than 50 midMichigan women, who are bald from cancer treatments, without the hats, wigs or scarves many wear after losing their hair. The non-profit “Be Bold, Feel Beautiful” project’s goal is to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage women to get tested and stay tuned to warning signs. The campaign continues through the end of September. In October, billboards and businesses around Lansing will display some of the photos. Mason learned about “Be Bold, Feel Beautiful” at her oncologist’s office this summer. Posing for a portrait session — especially one that could result in her face on a billboard — was out of Mason’s comfort zone. She brought along her mother and a friend from work for support. “I wasn’t too sure of myself before all this happened,” Mason said. “The pictures helped show me my hair doesn’t make me beautiful, it’s who I am. I’m realizing I don’t have to rely on what other people think.” Mason told her doctor’ about the mass in her breast during her yearly physical in February. A genetic test came back negative for cancer. Mason has no family history of breast cancer. The doctor told her not to worry, but sched-

uled a mammogram just to be sure. Nothing appeared on the mammogram. They did an ultrasound to doublecheck the results of the mammogram. Nothing out of the ordinary showed up on the ultrasound. A surgeon told Mason in April it was probably just a fatty tumor, but they could remove it if it would make her more comfortable. “When I went in later that same week (after the surgery), they said we were wrong, it is positive, it is a tumor,” Mason said. She had another surgery the same week, and eight of the 12 lymph nodes tested came back positive. She’s fighting stage three breast cancer. “I’m better for it even though it wasn’t easy and it wasn’t fun,” Mason said. “The biggest thing that’s helped me is having people to talk to who understand there are good and bad days, and it’s not just physical. Even though you try to have a positive attitude and think of everything positively, you still have those days when you just want to cry.” Some good has come from this bad situation, Mason said. It’s been educational for the kids she works with in 4-H. “For them to see me be up and doing things and still being able to interact has helped them,” Mason said. “I’ve been able to help them understand (what cancer is).” She said one of the younger kids didn’t like seeing her without hair. He was too nervous about the change to talk to her. “How do you know it’s her?” he asked one of the older kids. “Just ask her to smile,” was the response. That did the trick.

As someone who never responded to the bluesinspired, Zeppelin-esque fuzz of The White Stripes and similar groups, I could never be bothered with The Black Keys, writing them off as another throw-back group kneeling at the altar of Robert Plant. But a brazen recommendation by a trusted sonic ally persuaded me to give “Brothers” a spin, and I’m still picking gravel from my chin where my jaw hit the ground. To these ears, “Brothers” is a near-perfect collision of Marc Bolan swagger and Spoon’s grittier moments, and it is one of the most exhilarating albums I have heard this year. My first thought was the bizarro compliment that every song sounds like music from the most stylish sporting event in history; stirring, amped-up anthems that retain their potency and sense of attractive menace. The record is one long highlight, but “Next Girl” inches ahead, so full of soulful vocals and raw, squelching guitar and leads “Brothers” to the short list for year’s Coolest Record.

Thriving Ivory is varied San Francisco-based five-piece Thriving Ivory makes music that’s incredibly varied. Sometimes the band leans toward pop exploration, other times it’s straight-ahead, gritty rock. Still, one thing is consistent: The group’s songs are well-crafted and melodic, with catchy, sing-along choruses and no filler. There’s a lot of piano and an anthemic feel. Think Coldplay meets Our Lady Peace. The band, which plays Friday, Sept. 24, at The Machine Shop in Flint, hit pop radio big in 2008 with the track, “Angels on the Moon.” It scored on TV, too, as VH1 had the video in regular rotation. Lead singer Clayton Stroope says “Angels” was inspired by the events of 9/11. “There are some literal references to 9/11 in it, and basically, it’s a song about hope,” Stroope says. The band’s latest album, “Through Yourself & Back Again,” dropped in September on Wind-Up Records. Facebook-inspired art The new “Creative Community” at Scene Metrospace in East Lansing showcases the result of three sub-exhibits that gave local artists a chance to show their creative flair. I don’t know. There’s a reason for everything.” Allen hopes seeing the bald women’s portraits will make people think before they speak. “I’ve had some really nasty comments,” Allen said. “Like now I’m racist because I’m bald. Are you kidding me?” She was diagnosed with an the aggressive form of leukemia in June. She lost her hair after the first round of chemotherapy this summer. Since then, strangers have asked Allen why she’s “pulling a Britney.” And then there was the day she hopped out of the car to pump gas and forgot to put her hat on. “This guy was just staring so much that he didn’t notice a car backing up and they hit each other,” Allen said. Allen has weathered two rounds of chemotherapy, spending weeks at a time in the hospital. The treatments started with doctors pumping liquid she called “Rocket Fuel” through her veins. It made her sweat bright orange like an athlete in a Gatorade
commercial. “(The aftertaste) is like sucking on an exhaust pipe from a vehicle, Allen said about the chemotherapy. “It’s awful.” Allen’s fiancee, friends and family have been there every step of the way, many shaving their heads, too, and spending afternoons playing Skip-Bo in the hospital. “I don’t ask why it happened or how it happened,” Allen said. “They’re the kind of questions I wouldn’t get answers to. Supposedly it’s nothing to do with genetics. I just try to focus on how I can stay happy for today. I’ve got too much to live for. My fiancee and son, my family, doing nursing and helping other people. I can’t slow down a whole lot.” She has one more batch of hospital visits and procedures to go through in the coming weeks. This time, she’ll have her little brother Johnny, 22, by her side. Her best bet for remission now is a stem cell transplant from her brother, who they recently found out is a 100 percent match. “I always knew we were quite a bit alike, but I didn’t know we were that much alike,” Allen said. Her brother finished his military service last week. (I told him) you’re right on time,” Allen said. “Because I need your body to go fight my body and save my life.”

When a friend recommended Thai Kitchen recently, I was clueless as to where it was. Across from Coral Gables? In the same plaza as Plato’s Closet? Oh. The restaurant is kind of tucked away, and if you’re not looking for the place specifically, you might miss it.

THE SCENE Right after we were seated, we were served waters — with a pitcher. I love when places do that so you’re not flagging someone every time you need a refill. The restaurant is one big open dining area, with tables taking up as much space as possible. While there was a handful of other diners during our visit, I’d imagine it can get fairly packed.
THE FOOD Paul was a newcomer to Thai food, so I suggested he
go with the safe choice — pad Thai. It comes with your choice of chicken, beef, pork, tofu mixed vegetables, or shrimp or scallops for a bit more. He ordered his with shrimp ($6.13). I wanted to get something different than a noodle dish, so I ordered the tofu delight ($5.66), which comes with steamed rice. We also ordered the crab rangoons as an appetizer ($2.95). They came out right away, four crispy fried rangoons filled with warm cream cheese, and a side of
sweet and sour sauce. They were definitely a hit, and the fact they weren’t greasy made them even better. The portion of Pad Thai was fairly big — stir-fried rice noodles with Pad Thai sauce, bean sprouts and shrimp. Ground peanuts and shredded carrots came off to the side and had to be mixed together. The dish was both tangy and sweet, the noodles a bit mushy with the sauce. My tofu delight was very heavy on the ingredients — broccoli, baby corn, bean sprouts, nappas (type of cab-
bage), carrots, mushroom and onion, stir-fried with brown sauce, which tasted peanut based. It was quite a lot to eat, especially with the rice. It didn’t have a lot of bite to it, but it got the job done of filling me up. While I was looking to try something different, I’ll stick with a noodle dish next time.

DOWN, SET, HIKE GRANOLA BARS INGREDIENTS • 3 cups quick-cooking oats • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk • 2 tablespoons butter, melted • 1 cup flaked coconut • 1 cup sliced almonds • 1 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips • 1/2 cup sweetened dried cranberries • 1/2 cup raisins DIRECTIONS • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch pan. • In a large bowl, mix together the oats, sweetened condensed milk, butter, coconut, almonds, chocolate chips and cranberries with your hands until well blended. Press flat into the prepared pan. • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, depending on how crunchy you want them. Lightly browned just around the edges will give you moist, chewy bars. Full spectrum of emotions Elation after MSU win dampened by coach’s heart attack The thing about writing a weekly sports column is that you need to attempt to plot out a vague schedule for yourself in order to stay current, fresh and remotely sane. I try to plan columns based on big games, controversial issues and hot topics getting tossed around cubicles, tailgates and water coolers. However, there are times when the plan gets scrapped. Lives (and sports) don’t always adhere to an agenda. Sometimes, you’ve just got to react and wing it. I wasn’t planning on cracking open the can of Spartan football goodness until we started conference play with Wisconsin on Oct. 2. I wasn’t planning on jinxing what I hoped would be a stellar start prior to our first true road test in Ann Arbor the week after that. In the gloriously simple words of everyone’s favorite local mouthpiece on television and radio: “It is what it is, and that’s the way it is.” There’s no question that our guys in newly minted Spartan green didn’t plan on winning an overtime thriller against Notre Dame on the most audacious fake field goal play-call in the last decade. They also didn’t plan on almost losing the man who orchestrated it on the same night. In the first hours of Sunday, at a time when he should’ve been basking in the satisfaction of a victory and well-deserved nationwide attention for his players and staff, Coach Mark Dantonio experienced something that no one plans for. His “mild heart attack” hit the Spartan football community with a second adrenaline jolt in a matter of four hours. Many woke to morning TV programs

sprinkled with few details of the incident. We all clamored for good news. It came, eventually. Coach D is now resting at home, recovering with family. He’s undoubtedly starting to coordinate his return to his team and his sideline, and we’ll anxiously await that time. It’s difficult to quantify the lessons taken from this past weekend for the roster of young men Coach Dantonio is charged with — but I can be certain that the sequence of events on Saturday evening will remain with all of them, and us, for a long time. The sheer juxtaposition of emotions was enough to warrant a Bob Costas special. (Seriously: c’mon NBC.) To state the obvious, it’s things like this that remind us that the games we watch and the people we cheer are somewhat trivial in comparison to the lives we lead outside of sports. Coach Dantonio is expected to make a full recovery and lead MSU for the remainder of the 2010 season, and that news is more satisfying than any victory. I think the players in green and white this season will be playing with something new in their hearts — something bigger than desire for wins and losses, something more poignant than passion. They’ll be playing with knowledge of how fleeting triumph can be, and how overcoming the unplanned, together, can make them stronger and more powerful than ever before. Horn Dog Barley Wine Style Ale
Flying Dog has everything going for it — a history with the late author Hunter S. Thompson, labels by Thompson’s longtime illustrator, the outrageously original Ralph Steadman and, yes, really good beer. The brewery made its name with a variety of strongly hopped ales but can also make quality traditional beers when it wants to. Its Kerberos Tripel, for example, is a fresh-tasting, well-balanced example of the Belgian style. So it’s no surprise that Horn Dog, its barleywine offering, is among the better choices on the shelves. Horn Dog is rich, creamy, malty, chewy and warming in all the ways you want a barleywine to be. It differs a bit from many examples of the style with its darker color — light brown with red highlights instead of tanorange. This shows up in the taste as dark fruit and caramel malt, where many barleywines have more of a caramel-vanilla profile. Horn Dog is low in carbonation, so don’t expect

much of a head or a prickly mouthfeel. It’s not a still beer by any means, but it definitely invites sipping, as opposed to big gulps. The use of hops is interesting. Their presence is low-key during the initial taste — just enough bitterness to keep the sweet malt from becoming too overpowering. In the aftertaste, however, the hops become a bit more prominent without lending any off-flavors. Although you can tell Horn Dog is a strong beer, there is no vodkalike presence at any time, indicating a decent amount of aging before bottling. The only downside to my taste of Horn Dog is that it made me think of the coming winter. Bar spotlight Nuthouseisn’tjust forsportsenthusiasts Festive bar is a go-to for young professionals The day I visited the Nuthouse in downtown Lansing, I was under the impression that I needed to beat the crowd as there was some sort of basketball game occurring that day. Or maybe it was football. Football is in the fall, right? I say this to express exactly which type of sports fan was walking into and about to evaluate this sports bar: the so-not-asports-fan type. I typically steer clear of sports bars, lest I get overwhelmed with the chestbumping, booyah-ing, 400-footHD screens. Imagine my surprise and delight to find none of these at the Nuthouse. Sure, it’s undoubtedly a sports bar and there were many televisions displaying sporting events, but even with the pre-MSU-Notre Dame crowd beginning to fill up the high-top tables (yup, it was football), the place was downright tasteful. Pleasant even. “The main difference (between us and the typical East Lansing sports bar) is that we basically have professionals and older alumni here for the games,” said Nuthouse manager Jason Evans. “It’s just as intense, just as much fun, but everyone is just looking to have a beer and watch the game.” Now this is a sports bar philosophy I can get behind. And while this still did not inspire me to watch any games, I did have a really good beer. The Nuthouse just increased its taps to 16, including more craft beer varieties, such as the Frankenmuth Brewery’s Munich Dunkel and Shorts’ Bellaire Stout. The food selection is grow-
ing as well. While the menu’s variety and depth is already around 435 percent better than your typical sports bar, Evans reported that new dinner options are on the way. “Come January, we’ll expand to include seafood, pasta dishes and chicken dinners for a more well-rounded menu,” he said. Most popular currently is the Nutty Cheesebread, featuring a smattering of delicious herbs, fluffy pita and melted cheese. It comes with dill sauce too. The Nuthouse is now celebrating its 15th year. “In the summertime we’re al-
ways busy with Nuttyfest and Thirsty Thursdays,” Evans said. During these days the bar fences off their adjoining parking lot and throws outdoor parties complete with DJs, live bands and liquor luges. Throughout the year, in addition to sports, the restaurant/ bar features deals all week long, including $2.50 pints and call drinks on Tuesdays and Game Day specials.

Hook-up factor: Strangely high, considering the aforementioned family friendliness. I get the feeling that after the kiddies go to bed and the fourth quarters are running out, the Nuthouse is awash with young professionals. On the horizon: A specialty drink called the “Nutty Bowl.” Rumor has it there will be “gummy somethings” involved. In case you didn’t know: Not down with football or other highly-organized sports? The Nuthouse plays all of those games, but also frequently hosts large crowds of people watching pay-per-view cagefighting matches. Which is, evidently, something that exists.
