When a psychiatrist promises to “tell all” about his 15 most unusual cases in 30 years of practice, a reader gets his hopes up. In “The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head,” Dr. Gary Small delivers on his promise with some fascinating tales (though some cases he writes about, including the naked woman, are less interesting than others). Apart from describing the patients, Small details his own puzzlements as the cases proceed, giving a look at both sides of the chess match as he and his patients deal with each other. Sometimes he finds out his patients have been deceiving him, and sometimes he discovers the real problem is much different from what it appeared at first. We read about Small’s sudden insights, as when he realizes that a healthy-sounding habit was clogging the mental machinery of an executive. We meet other patients, like a plastic surgeon with nightmares about turning into Pinocchio who wants to marry a woman obsessed with all things Disney. LJ-0100043013

German band ‘Accept’ back after 14 years Anne Erickson | NOISE
It’s entirely possible that if it weren’t for German metal band Accept, speed metal wouldn’t exist. After all, many call Accept’s early-’80s song, “Faster Than a Shark,” the first speed metal song ever, inspiring musicians to make a whole career out of the lightning-bolt fast genre. “Again and again, I hear people took that song as an inspiration to start down the whole speed metal path,” guitarist Wolf Hoffmann says. “That’s one of the nicest comments I hear, and I’m proud and happy that we as a band achieved that.” With their swift, aggressive riffing and explosive live shows, the guys of Accept gained international success in the ’80s, before lead vocalist Udo Dirkschneider called it quits. Now 14 years later, the band is back with new singer Mark Tornillo. They play Saturday at The Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens, along with metal legend King’s X.
Hoffmann spoke with NOISE about how the industry has changed since the ’80s and the band’s new album. NOISE: How has the music industry changed since the ’70s and ’80s? Hoffmann: In so many ways. Back in the day, it was all about selling records, and you would support the records by going on tour. Now, you make records to support the tour. The Internet changed everything. But one thing is still the same: If you’re into heavy metal and like good music, you have to go out there and see it personally. NOISE: What was it like going back into the studio 14 years after your last release? Hoffmann: Oh, man, it was great. So much has changed. Now everything is in Pro Tools and works on laptops. Before, it was all analog and recording on actual physical tape. NOISE: Tell us about the songwriting process on the new album, “Blood of the Nations.” Hoffmann: It was all written in steps. Usually, Peter (Baltes, bass player) and I did the initial song writing. We wrote 30 or 40 songs out of which we picked the

strongest ones, and Mark did the lyrics. NOISE: What’s the most memorable thing about making music again? Hoffmann: Just to be back in the business, talking to people like you and the fans. It feels pretty nice that we have this opportunity and that people still remember us after all these years. NOISE: It must feel great to play shows again. Hoffmann: It’s a thrill like you wouldn’t believe. We recently played some shows with AC/DC in Europe in front of 80,000 people, and if you told me that a year and a half ago, I never would have believed it. But there were people there, singing along, raising their arms. These people really came to see AC/DC, but they loved our stuff, and to have them get into it like they did is really mind-blowing and nice.

ever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Especially if they have Hamburger Helper. Lunch with a Purpose started on a frigid February afternoon in Lansing. Six friends served 10 pounds of Hamburger Helper for lunch at the Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of seriously ill children who are hospitalized or receiving treatment at Lansing area hospitals. Among the inaugural members of Lunch with a Purpose were former NFL football player and MSU alum T.J. Duckett and Justin Caine of Good Fruit video. “I was taking pictures on my phone of everyone cooking and having a good time,” Caine said. “When I got back to the office, my Facebook was totally covered with messages that said this is awesome, I want to get involved, are you doing it again?” That’s when Caine, 27 and Duckett, 29, realized they might be onto something.

The odd couple has teamed up before for the Battlefield Brawl, a flag football tournament that raised money for the Sparrow Foundation. They’re both drawn to volunteer service that doesn’t just consist of stuffing envelopes or stumbling through the multitude of forks at a fancy dinner. It’s not that they have anything against silent auctions, but it’s not their style to do something without making some noise. “We want to be able to find things that are going to excite people and make them want to give their time, to make it not feel like a chore,” Caine said. “A lot of people giving a little bit of time makes a huge difference.” Lunch with a Purpose visits a different local non-profit each Thursday, tackling a project in about an hour. So far, its lunches have ranged from giving blood to giving out stuffed animals to kids at the hospital, painting a shed to clearing debris at a playground. Caine calls it diversified giving, and said that young people are often more willing and able to give time than money. More than 600 people came through the doors in the first 45 minutes Deb Brown volunteered at ArtPrize last weekend. “It’s amazing,” the Williamston resident said. “There’s so much energy downtown.” ArtPrize runs through Oct. 10 in Grand Rapids, where 1,713 artists’ work is showing in 192 venues, almost all of them in a 3-square-mile patch of downtown Grand Rapids. The top prize winners are picked by popular vote (not by a jury of experts like most art competitions), with more than $450,000 at stake, including $250,000 for first place. April Gober’s piece, a mosaic, is on display at the B.O.B. The Holt resident’s piece is a portrait made up of 2,500 smaller pictures of her two young sons, Ty and Mason. Tierney Sutton Band Tierney Sutton had a musical epiphany in college, unleashing her massive, soulful voice onto the national jazz landscape. It seems only appropriate, then, that her list of all-time favorite vocalists includes singers across the musical landscape, equally powerful and influential. “I love Stevie Wonder,” said the Wisconsin-born singer. “Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, Joss Stone, Steely Dan, Sting. There are so many great singers in all genres. I try to listen to different kinds of music as much as possible.” Sutton, who headlines the Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre Friday, holds a long list of accomplishments: three Grammy nominations, numerous JazzWeek awards, tour stops at Carnegie Hall. She calls jazz the “melting pot” of musical genres. “Jazz is American in the sense that America is this melting pot where you can go to Michigan and go to an Indian restaurant, and the people running the restaurant are Americans, because it’s America. If those people went to France, they would never be considered French,” she said. “This country is unique in that you can become American no matter where you start out, and jazz is the quintessential American music because anything can become an element of jazz music. There is a fairly recent cooking trend, if you’ve seen television shows, that involves the “deconstruction” of food. One method of deconstruction simply involves taking a familiar dish like Eggs Benedict and serving the ingredients separately on the plate so that the diner can one by one complete the whole dish. The argument is that deconstruction intends to take the individual components of a dish and put them back together in unique ways. It seems a pretentious and pointless way of charging more money for a meal. Odell Brewery has taken this concept with a beer, sort of. De Construction starts with a finished golden ale. It then blends together 44 percent of that beer with 33 percent of the ale that was aged in oak barrels, 20 percent in bourbon barrels and 3 percent in wine barrels. The concept is that adding in the three components at the end of the cycle will help highlight those characters.

The initial sweet, light fruit flavors of De Construction give way to funky leathery Belgian yeast and darker fruit flavors, along with a wine-like tartness. A bit of caramel sweetness throughout helps bind all these flavors. This is all good. There’s a lot of complexity here to enjoy, helped along by a nice mouthfeel. The end result, however, does not match up with the percentages used. The oak barrel characteristics seem right, with some oak and vanilla aromas, but the wine characteristics stand out much more. This shouldn’t be the case (3 percent wine barrel-aged presence vs. 20 percent bourbon). Is any of this relevant? Not at all. De Construction would still be a good beer whether the brewery told me it was deconstructed or not. De Construction comes in a 750ml bottle that retails for around $15.

Williamston bar beats two fires and tornado Some say the third time is the charm, and honestly, after all CB’s Bucket in Williamston has been through in the past four years, it had better be. In 2006, a grease fire shut down the bar for several months. Then, just six weeks after the re-opening, a tornado blew through town, taking the Bucket’s roof with it. And then there was the arson in 2008. At that point, no one would have blamed a business owner who decided enough was enough. But that isn’t the Bucket’s Craig Banwell. He and his staff agree that the bar looks, feels and is better than ever. “It’s insane enough to physically rebuild your business three times,” he said, “but the real trick is rebuilding your reputation.” Since its re-re-reopening this summer, CB’s Bucket has been working to do exactly that.
A new menu, new beer and wine selections and a new elevator leading to the bar’s “Club Rumorz” upstairs are just some of the changes to the downtown Williamston landmark. The drink selection includes 12 beers on tap that Banwell describes as a “standard beer selection,” though it was my first time ordering a pint of Apple Cherry Hard Cider from Uncle John’s Fruit Winery in St. John’s outside of the cider mill itself, which I found hand-clappingly delightful. The standout beer, however, has to be The Bucket Brew. I can’t tell you a lot about the beer — other than it’s made specifically for The Bucket and it’s
on the lighter side — because the staff just won’t tell you any more than that. The wine selection is worth a mention as well, not only because it includes a couple of Michigan and several California varieties, but also because the wines were chosen to be paired with items from the menu. What you’d never expect from the classy bar-and-dining experience on The Bucket’s first floor is that a second floor exists. Club Rumorz, the urban club-style loft setting has its own bar, pub tables, dance floor and VIP lounge. Club Rumorz is open Wednesdays through Saturdays and features live music, DJs an all sorts of special events.

THE SCENE The restaurant offers an expansive (and impressive) view of the golf course no matter where you sit. The dining area isn’t very big, however, so be sure to make a reservation if you’re heading there on a weekend.
THE FOOD For an upscale restaurant (at a country club no less), the prices are reasonable. Sandwiches top off at $10, entrees range from $15-$20 and steaks are no more than $28. CHEDDAR-STUFFED PRETZEL BREAD INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup (about 1/2 medium) diced yellow onion • 1 teaspoon olive oil • 1/3 cup roasted red bell peppers, cut in 1/2-inch strips • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese • 1 cup diced ham • Salt and pepper, to taste • 4 (6-inch) pretzel rolls DIRECTIONS • Preheat the oven to 375°F. • In a small skillet, sauté the onion in oil until soft, 3 to 4 minutes. In a medium bowl, toss the sautéed onions with the peppers, parsley, thyme, cheese, and ham. Season to taste with salt and pepper. • To hollow the pretzel rolls, cut off one end and set aside. Using a thin-bladed knife, gently cut the center out of each bread, leaving 3/8 inch around the edge. Use a small spoon to scrape out the inside of the bread, and discard or save for another use. • Stuff one-fourth of the filling mixture into the pretzel breads by using the end of a wooden spoon to gently push the filling into the bread. Replace the cut-off end, and wrap each bread with foil, leaving the foil open on top. Place the stuffed breads on a baking sheet.
