Top selling indie band Clyne & Peacemakers Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers have broken a few records in their day. Recording independently, the first six studio releases from the band all debuted in the top 10 on Billboard’s Internet Sales chart, breaking records across the indie community. Playing between 150 to 200 shows at sold-out concert venues every year, it’s no surprise RCPM has a solid, loyal fanbase, ready and willing to support its music. There’s also the fact RCPM is something of a supergroup, with a collective musical résumé that includes playing in popular alt-rock bands the Refreshments, Dead Hot Workshop and the Gin Blossoms. Together, the guys make something of a pop-laced, Americana rootsrock sound, with just enough flash to keep the music catchy and enough twang to claim birth in the South. Roger Clyne (lead singer/songwriter and guitar player), P.H. Naffah (drums), Jim Dalton (lead guitar) and Nick Scropos (bass) on Sunday take their fast-paced show to The Loft in downtown Lansing. • Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, The Tom Fuller Band, Distill My Soul • Doors 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10 • The Loft (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. Jars of Clay show expresses ‘community’ ted with NOISE: NOISE: Let’s talk about your new release, “The Shelter.” Amy Grant, Derek Webb, Toby Mac and a slew of others guest on the release. Odmark: Yeah, the title of the record is based on this old Irish proverb that says, “It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.” So, the idea is to express the deep experience we’ve had in our community. For us, allowing our communities to shape us has brought us closer to the gospel and Christian community. Since it was a record about community, it needed to be made by community. So, we had an amazing chance to work with these artists we’ve been friends with for years. NOISE: Recording and production of “The Shelter” was at the midpoint of the flooding in Nashville. Did anything happen to your studio and gear during recording? Odmark: Several of us had homes affected in the flood and the space where we were recording the record was in a major floodway. Most of the first floor was filled with water, but we were able to get some irreplaceable things up to the second story. But we lost merchandise and old vintage

instruments that we weren’t able to move in time. NOISE: What really stood out to you during that experience? Odmark: Well, the most traumatic point in the project was after the first night of flooding. My brother, who was engineering the project, was talking on the phone, and I could hear the water was rushing around the building. It was so unnerving. I panicked because the entire record we’d been working on for five months was on a computer in the second story of the building. My brother ended up wading into the building that night, and he took the hard drive out, put it in a plastic bag and waded back out. NOISE: Are there any bands or artists people would be surprised to find on your iPod? Odmark: I always surprise people. But my big curve ball would probably be that the Pandora station I listen to most is Lady Gaga. It’s just one of those guilty pleasures I can’t get away from.

Since coming on the national scene in 1995 with their platinum-selling debut, the guys of Jars of Clay have been at the forefront of contemporary Christian music. With each new release, the band reinvents itself and pushed the limits musically, with albums that favor everything from synth and keyboards-heavy tunes to British alt-pop to straightahead rock and roll. Vocalist Dan Haseltine, pianist Charlie Lowell, lead guitarist Stephen Mason and rhythm guitarist Matthew Odmark met going to a small college in southern Illinois called Greenville. Since then, they’ve won three Grammy Awards, heaps of Dove Awards and sold 6 million albums. The band’s latest effort, “Jars of Clay Presents the Shelter” (out last Tuesday), was recorded in the middle of the horrific flooding in Nashville, and that experience helped shape the faith-filled tracks. The band will play a live, sold-out show Saturday at Great Lakes Christian College for the kickoff date of its tour in partnership with non-profit organizations Blood:Water Mission and Food for the Hungry. Speaking from his home in Nashville, Odmark chat-

Sean Lennon’s 2006 album “Friendly Fire” was a sophisticated, introspective pop record, and my top album of that year. His output since then has been criminally sparse, so when I heard he was crafting a Morriconeesqe score to an independent horror movie, you could say my interest was piqued. The resulting album is a moody, knowing tribute to the atmospheric soundtracks of ’70s and ’80s horror films. As a primarily instrumental work, “Rosencrantz” works best as background music, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t engaging. With touches of Elfman, Carpenter and myriad Euro cult film scores, Lennon knows his influences, and does them justice. The bizarre melody of “Fortenbras” and unsettling insistency of “Yorick’s Skull” could have been lifted from an unreleased Lucio Fulci bloodbath, so authentic they sound. With the only stumble being the misplaced hip hop track “Desire,” “Rosencrantz” is a fine way to set a creepy mood and slip into the spirit of Halloween.

I honestly believe Jon Stewart can do no wrong. Ok, so he’s probably not perfect — I’m sure he forgets to fill the parking meter sometimes or leaves his toenail clippings on the carpet — but he’s the closest thing to intellectual comedic perfection we’ve got. (Can I just say I love him even more after the recent Rick Sanchez fiasco?) Now we’ve got another book by Stewart and the Daily Show Team along the lines of 2004’s “America (The Book)” but on a broader scale comparable to The Onion’s “Our Dumb World.” If you dig the cheeky wit we expect from “The Daily Show,” you’ll love it for yourself, and keep in mind that the holidays are coming, which makes this the perfect present for the Lefty you have to buy a gift for but really know nothing about.

rom orchards to corn mazes, experience the best of fall Laden with jugs of cider and bags of homemade donuts, Michael Peck and Maureen Clemons trekked back to their car from the pumpkin patch. After stashing their sweets, the East Lansing couple headed to the corn maze to check another item off the to-do list of their new fall tradition: an afternoon at Uncle John’s Cider Mill in St. Johns. “We came here exactly a year ago,” Clemons said, and the couple exchanged a sweet GET A FULL smile. Travel about a half hour LISTING OF in any direction from Lansing LOCAL FALL and suddenly the landscape ACTIVITIES is sprinkled with orchards, pumpkin patches and corn mazes ripe for an afternoon of autumnal Americana. Families, flirty teens and old friends flock to the seasonal attractions. Sure, they could buy a pumpkin from a bin outside a grocery store. But then they wouldn’t be able fling apples at scarecrow zombies from giant slingshots, watch pigs chase Oreos around a racetrack or get chased by actors with chainsaws in a corn maze. To keep crowds coming, many Mid-Michigan agribusinesses are pulling out all the stops. “People can buy cider and doughnuts and all the stuff we make at grocery stores,” said Uncle John’s Cider Mill owner Mike Beck. “It may not be our brand or our quality, but it’s there. You have to offer them a unique experience for that food. Sometimes, you have to go over the top to draw people.” Barbara Wieland contributed to this story

How to pick (and carve) a perfect pumpkin »Select a pumpkin that is completely orange. A partially green pumpkin might not ripen any further. »Do not lift or carry a pumpkin by the stem; it might break. »A ripe pumpkin has a hard shell that does not dent easily when pressing on it with a thumbnail. »Scour the pumpkin for soft spots. If you find one, pick a different pumpkin. »Lighter pumpkins are typically softer and easier to carve, but they don’t last as long as firmer, darker pumpkins. »Cut open the top of the pumpkin and clean out the inside. »When cleaning out the inside of your pumpkin, scrape the inside wall to about an inch thick. This will make carving easier. »Set the seed aside for making roasted pumpkin seeds. »Draw a picture of what you want the carving to look like or choose a pre-made pattern. »Transfer the pattern to the pumpkin with a pencil or score it with a knife. »Cut out the pattern slowly. »Remember not to leave a candlelit pumpkin unattended. Try a battery-powered light for indoor use.

How to make roasted pumpkin seeds » Extract seeds from pumpkin. » Separate seeds from pulp. Discard the pulp.

» Wash seeds in warm water. » Spread seeds out onto a cookie sheet. » Sprinkle with salt » Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.

» Stir every five minutes. » Check to see if they are done by taking a sample out and tasting. Be careful not to get burned! If the inside of the seed is dry, it’s done. » Allow to cool and serve. » If you’re feeling zesty, add flavor to your pumpkin seeds like garlic salt, taco seasoning or even hot sauce. Paul Geremia concert Rhode Island-based acoustic guitarist and folk singer Paul Geremia has honed his craft since the mid-’60s, traveling throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe playing his six- and 12-string guitars, harmonica and piano. The bluesman is recognized as one of the best country blues fingerpickers in the world. Now releasing albums under Minneapolis’ Red House Records (Guy Davis, Greg Brown), his 10 solo albums are layered with tricky fingerstyle passages, authentic arrangements and stories that reflect everyday life, with a little humor. He’s just as passionate about helping up-and-coming blues players as he is about playing the blues, and he plays free shows around the country to spread the tradition to the next generation. WOLVERINE BEER BRATS

12 | NOISE

| lansingnoise.com

INGREDIENTS • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 6 bratwurst sausages • large sweet onion, sliced into 1/4-inch rings • 6 ounces (half a bottle) of Wolverine Premium Lager (Can be replaced with any lager. The darker the beer, the richer the flavor in the brats)

LJ-0100031208

PREPARATION • Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a large Dutch oven. Brown bratwurst sausages until deep golden brown. (Do not puncture the sausages or they will become dry.) Set aside. • Add the remaining teaspoon of olive oil and onion rings to the drippings. Cook the onions, stirring often, until they golden. • Add the bratwurst back into the pot with the onions and add the beer. • Cook over medium heat for about 12 to 15 minutes, until beer has cooked down to a syrup. Turn the brats halfway through cooking. • Serve on buns or as an entree. Adapted from a recipe at about.com.

Three cheers for new Leo’s LEO’S SPIRITS & GRUB

Esther Gim | NOISE

Leo’s Spirits & Grub is the third in the Leo’s family to join the Lansing-area restaurant scene. Known for a rustic style, Leo’s last month opened the doors in Okemos — on the corner of Okemos Road and West Grand River Avenue, at the former home of Wild Wing Cafe.

THE SCENE Leo’s Spirits & Grub has the log-cabin decor going on, like the other two spots, the Lodge and Outpost. Be prepared to dine beside stuffed bears and gaze upon various other hunting trophies. There are more than a dozen TVs, including several up at the bar.

THE FOOD The menu consists of sandwiches, burgers, pizza, soups and salads. We started off with Leo’s famous cheese bread ($6.49). It’s pizza dough with a warm, flavorful combination of mozzarella cheese and a butter/ Parmesan garlic blend. It came with ranch and pizza

sauce. We quickly scarfed that down. I ordered the pepperjack crab soup in a bread bowl ($5.49), which is now my favorite soup in the area. The pepperjack gave it a good kick, with a lot of imitation crab meat. The temperature was perfect. Combined with the bread bowl, it was hearty enough for me to have just the cheese bread and soup as my meal. The soup was definitely on the salty side. Paul had the turkey reuben, ($7.99) — shaved turkey breast topped with Swiss cheese and coleslaw, served on marble rye bread. It had a side of Thousand Island dressing and fries.

The meat, very tender and juicy, was what made the sandwich. Paul said having the dressing come out on the side, instead of mixed in with the sandwich was crucial — it prevented the dressing from overpowering the sandwich. Even before we finished our meal, Paul said he couldn’t wait to come here again to try the rest of the menu.

THE DAMAGE $21.17 (including tax but not tip)

NEXT TIME Leo’s fresh catch — a basket of smelt with fries, coleslaw, tartar sauce and a dinner roll — $8.99

MICHIGAN SOLDIERS WEIGH IN ON RIVALRY ... FROM CAMP IN IRAQ NOISE received the following message from 2007 Michigan State University alum Ron Ziehmer, who is serving in the Army in Iraq. He and some of his fellow soldiers are pretty fired up for Saturday’s game against the Wolverines:

14 | NOISE

| lansingnoise.com

Hello from Camp Taji, Iraq. I wanted to pass along some photos from our deployment. We are B Co 1-147th Aviation out of Grand Ledge, and we are flying the Army’s newest version of the the Blackhawk, the UH-60M. We are here in Iraq for the next year but even halfway around the world, flying missions every day, we can’t wait for this weekend’s game. The company is pretty evenly divided between MSU and U-M fans. Those who aren’t on flight status this Saturday evening or Sunday morning (since we are seven hours ahead here, the game is on kinda late) are going to try to get together and watch our hometown teams battle it out.

LJ-0100045476

Four ways the MSU Spartans can win this rivalry matchup Uh oh. That’s right: Your favorite fence-riding sports columnist is actually picking a side, taking a stand, making her bed and planning to lay in it. This weekend brings The Game we’ve all been A NDI looking at on the schedule since O S T ER S mid-August: a quick jaunt down ostersan@gmail.com US-23 to Ann Arbor for what will be the marquee matchup this Saturday afternoon. Did you know that on Saturday, it will have been 1,070 consecutive days since the University of Michigan has defeated Michigan State University in any football or basketball sporting contest? Regardless of recent history, this weekends’ game will depend on four factors, which I’ll take the liberty of outlining here.

1. PAGING MR. ROBINSON

By now, if you’ve opened a newspaper, been on the interwebs, or flipped on ESPN in the past 3 weeks, you’ve heard about the freak-of-nature in the maize and blue named Denard Robinson. The U-M quarterback has stacked up stats so outlandish that if you glanced too quickly, you’d think they were the TEAM numbers. 2,000 yards in five games, 905 of which have been earned on the ground. Basically, opponents get really used to looking at the back of a No. 16 jersey with dreads flowing in the wind as he blows by them. Stop him, MSU more than likely cannot. However, should one of our hefty LBs put a decent lick on him early and avoid ‘Nard runs of ten or more yards, I’d be thrilled.

2. CAPTAIN KIRK

The Wisconsin game was a tale of two halves for our QB, Kirk Cousins. Three turnovers before halftime had Spartan fans feeling antsy as the band took the field last Saturday. But, lo and behold, Cousins came out for the final 30 minutes and strung together some serious drives. This week, he’ll need to be laser-focused to compete in the Big House. There are some who speculate this game could break the national collegiate attendance record — and that means supersonic noise. Trust that Michigan faithful will be loud, obnoxious and distracting in droves. Accurate play-calling and good offensive line play will be critical for the green and white in a hostile environment. Denard Robinson

PREDICTION MSU 38 U-M 35 Go Green! Edwin Baker

3. EXPLOIT THE YOUNG

The U-M defense is inexperienced, untested in high-pressure situations and all-in-all just less than stellar. Lots of folks are talking about this weekend as the “time for the Michigan defensive coming out party.” I say postpone that shindig. Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez recruits for offensive skill positions and modified players to fit into defensive schemes. Perhaps that disparity in skill is no more evident than this season, as the Wolverine secondary got chewed up by Indiana last week for 480 passing yards while looking downright lost covering mediocre passing routes.

4. SCORE MORE

Simple, right? Not against this Michigan team. Last week, Indiana controlled the football for over 41 minutes of gameplay ... and still lost. They advanced the ball at will on the ground and even more so through the air and scored 35 points ... and still lost. Indiana ran 98 offensive plays to Michigan’s 45, and garnered 20 more first-downs than U-M ... and still lost. Michigan quite obviously doesn’t care how ugly their wins are: they’ve still got just as many as we do. This will come down to scoring late in the game. I wouldn’t count either team out of this one until the clock shows 0:00. Andi Osters, 28, is a Michigan State grad.

animating the Jubjub bird. “Everytime you see him flying around, those are basically my settings making it look like he’s flying through the air,” Weiler said. Weiler hopes the recent success of “Avatar” changes the film industry, and not just by encouraging more 3D films. “They took a lot money, and they took a lot of time and patience, and they did it right,” Weiler said. “That’s what we always want as artists. We want time to do it. Usually we get into a job and time is money, so the thing you don’t get is a lot of time to work on something.” In the years since he landed his first job on a film, Weiler’s seen his name fly by on the credits for some blockbuster films. “As grand and as cool as the job is, in some ways it’s just like working on a GM line,” Weiler said. “You do your one part and you pass it on to someone else. It’s one thing when you’re outside of the industry, you put it on a pedestal. Once you’re inside you see that it’s just like anything else.”

Zack Weiler hates skunks. Not because he got sprayed by one. Not because he has one living under his deck. Weiler hates skunks because their tails are so tricky to animate. The 32-year-old Okemos native has worked as a visual effects creator for films including “Alice in Wonderland”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. He creates the effects that animate the characters’ hair and clothes so they appear to move naturally. It was the skunk in the animated feature film “Open Season” that gave his team the most trouble. “It was a pain,” Weiler said. Weiler’s been a part of several blockbuster films, but he never has to worry about paparazzi recognizing him. He said in the visual effects industry, the goal is for your work to be invisible. “You hope that no one sees your job when they watch a film,” he said.

“If you notice it, something’s wrong.” When Weiler graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design a decade ago, he and his classmates generally fell into two camps — those who wanted to work for Pixar, and those who wanted to work on the Final Fantasy video games. Weiler would have gladly worked for either, but the job he found after moving to Los Angeles was at a small deli. Weiler’s boss knew the artist didn’t want to serve sandwiches Weiler forever and decided to let him make a creative addition to his uniform. He wore a sign over his blue apron that read: 3D artist looking for work. Not everyone responded well to the sign on Weiler’s chest, but eventually an employer from the visual effects industry came in for a sandwich and left with an animator. Weiler said watching characters he worked on come to life on the big screen is still an amazing feeling. In “Alice in Wonderland,” he worked on most of the characters and spent a lot of time

Old Chicago is a national chain with 102 locations, one of which is located at the corner of Marsh Road and Grand River Avenue in Okemos. The chain has 110 bottled and 30 tap beers. The chain had an Oktoberfest Mini Tour promotion (which lasted until Oct. 3) celebrating this year’s 200th anniversary of Germany’s Oktoberfest. Its special beers included Oktoberfests from Ayinger, Spaten, Beck’s and Samuel Adams, lagers from St. Pauli Girl and Warsteiner, a hefe-weiss from Franziskaner, and Paulaner Wiesn Blonde. It was nice to have several Oktoberfest beers to compare side by side, instead of trying to rely on the memory of a beer I may have had several years ago. Ayinger was the clear winner of the Oktoberfest beers, with a bit more pronounced Vienna malt taste and stronger grassy hop flavor (but not bitterness) than the others. While the malt is smooth and rich, the body of the beer still remains light and crisp. It also had the odd, but pleasant, characteristic I seldom experience where the sweetness from the malts appears randomly like miniature explosions on the underside of the tongue. Paulaner Wiesn Blonde is made for Germany’s annual festival, but is a golden yellow color, as op-

posed to the typical amber. With a 6-percent alcohol content, it’s more than a lager, but not quite a doppelbock. It’s an unusual beer to come across and well worth seeking out, reminding me of a less-strong version of Capital’s Blonde Doppelbock, with honey and vanilla notes in the malt, and a quenching crispness. Old Chicago is an interesting enterprise. While many of its beers are the expected massproduced offerings and the mediocre, ever-present imports such as Corona, Moosehead and Stella Artois, six taps are set aside for beers from the state, region and even city of the location. Regional beers are also represented in bottles. Excellent imports included Pinkus Jubilate dark lager from Germany, Taddy Porter, Nut Brown and Oatmeal Stout from England’s Samuel Smith, Lindeman’s fruit ales and Chimay from Belgium. U.S. craft beers included ones from Bell’s, Flying Dog, Victory, Dogfish Head, Summit, Goose Island, Pyramid and New Belgium.

Todd Haefer writes about beer for Gannett. Some of the beers have limited availability. Check brewers’ websites.

Modern, clean bar lacks creativity, personality Here is the type of conversation you can expect to overhear at The Firm in Downtown Lansing: “Seriously, dude. I’m here so much I’m like a one-man economic development plan for downtown.” “So this is like, my very first budget I just completed. So I’m all like, you know, so relieved.” Did you appropriately imagine all of these things coming from men and woman in pinstriped suits? Indeed. Everyone at The Firm on the Wednesday night of my visit appeared to have come straight from an actual firm of some sort. Maybe it’s easier to keep track of your schedule that way. The Firm looks like it could be a law or corporate office itself, save the actual bar and stools. The atmosphere is decidedly modern and clean. Very clean, in fact, like a thief may have just taken off with some of the tidy, well-behaved wall art, or perhaps some of the furniture. I’m just guessing that this look is purposeful and not the result of looting, because I couldn’t find anyone to tell me any different. Though I was at

The Firm for several hours and called back a startling number of times over the following days, I couldn’t get a staff member to share anything with me beyond, “He’ll be over to speak with you in a minute,” and “I’ll have a manager call you right back.” So kudos to The Firm’s for really pulling off that corporate look and feel and treatment. Not that this is to say that the regular customer service was poor in the least. The ladies behind the bar were absolutely sweet and attentive. They all wear little matching black tank tops and have long, shiny hair, and were very polite to everyone who walked up to the bar asking for something they didn’t have, like cognac, Chambord, or any beer other than the regular domestics on tap. The drinks they did have, specifically the vodka tonic and dirty martini ordered by my friends, were reportedly very good with generous shots. We also ordered food, one of the three of which — a pretzel-bunned, off-menu sandwich — was quite tasty. Beyond the food and drinks I had

myself, the only things I know about The Firm I had to glean from its website and Myspace page. This includes the following information: * There is a VIP lounge somewhere that you can maybe rent or have access to if you have a pass or something. * The “411” on the bar is that a DJ plays on Mondays and they feature $2 Tuesdays, during which, I would assume, something costs $2. * There was a New Year’s party at The Firm once. The photos look fun. * The Firm may or may not be really into Christmas, as the logo on its Myspace page is either already or still wearing a Christmas hat. Festive! It would seem the key to having a good time at The Firm is to wear your power suit, don’t ask any questions, and order simply. Oh, and making comments like, “What’s going on with all the women over there? It’s like ladies’ caucus up in here” helps, too. GREEN BEER: NOT JUST FOR ST. PADDY’S DAY Over a plate of eggs from a free-range, hormone-free, vegetarian-fed, organic chicken, I pondered the carbon footprint of my beer consumption. I recycle bottles and cans, sure; but is that enough to offset all the water, energy and other resources that go into making liquid gold? So I started looking into organic beers — and I was underwhelmed. Unlike the wine industry, which in recent years has exploded with bio-dynamic and organic wines produced in sustainable ways, there are still only a relative few number of beers out there that have gone green. Whatever the reason, the ones that are on the market, for the most part, aren’t extraordinary. They’re certainly not better than their conventional counterparts. Here are three breweries that are doing it right: Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. The California craft-beer pioneer also is a leader in environmental practices, harnessing solar power, finding ways to use half the water of other breweries its size, creating biodiesel fuel from vegetable oil used at its brew-

pub, and recycling spent grain for farmers to feed their livestock. New Belgium Brewing Co. You know that a brewery with a bicycle on its logo has to be aware of its footprint. And Colorado’s New Belgium is. In 1999, it became the first windpowered brewery, and the employee-owned maker of Fat Tire, 1554 and the experimental Lips of Faith series constantly pushes itself and its customers to reduce their impact on the environment. Each year, the brewery donates 1 percent of its profits to Earthconscious causes. Kona Brewing Co. Last week, this Hawaii brewery released its first beer made completely from solar-generated power, Suncharged Pale Ale. Kona uses condensation gathered from its air conditioners to water its plants, and it has contract-brewing agreements in Oregon and New Hampshire so it doesn’t have to waste beer miles shipping its products from the Big Island to the mainland. KIts Pipeline Porter is a fine example of the style with its dark-roasted malts that create a flavor of coffee with a touch of cream.

‘Bored to Death: The Complete First Season’ HB O (220 MIN, RATED TV MA)

Jonathan (Jason Schwartzman) is a fledgling author with one acclaimed book and no follow-up forthcoming. In a moment of impulse after his girlfriend leaves him, he offers his services as Private Investigator on Craigslist. Much to Jonathan’s surprise (and delight), he gets responses. Soon, with the “help” of his friends, magazine magnate George (Ted Danson) and oddball cartoonist Ray (Zach Galifianakis) Jonathan realizes it takes more than familiarity with Philip Marlowe to cut it as a P.I. Full of literary world references and intellectual quirk, “Bored” relies entirely on the charisma and comic abilities of the three leads, and all three are terrific. Schwartzman brings a perfect mix of naivete and gumption, and Galifianakis continues his run of endearing, fuzzy weirdos. As arrogant, adventure-hungry George, Ted Danson is an unhinged revelation, and this should be his “Baldwin on ’30 Rock’” moment.
