Agent Orange returns When Agent Orange played Mac’s in downtown Lansing last January, the place was wall-to-wall packed, and they promised to play there again soon. Well, the guys made good their promise, and they return today to Mac’s for the only Michigan date on their current tour. It was 30 years ago when vocalist-guitarist Mike Palm got the idea to mix hardcore, first-wave punk rock and surf music. And in no time, Palm and his Southern California buddies pretty much created pop-punk and skatepunk and influenced numerous others. “Punk is a pretty simple form of music, so a lot of people can pick up a guitar and play these songs,” Palm said. “It’s just fun music, and I think that’s the main reason why people picked up on it.” • Agent Orange, Seized Up, more • 7 p.m. today, Oct. 14 • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Family Day Out

Birthday Bash! New album for Vasas Palace gig gives band momentum Anne Erickson | NOISE

When he started writing his band’s sophomore release, local musician Mike Vasas looked to his musical idols. He wanted to make a record with groove and poly-rhythms in the vein of Fela Kuti or Talking Heads, he said, along with the progpop of Deerhoof or ELO. “In the end, you go where the songs take you, so there’s some Queen in there, and I still hear some Roxy Music, too. You get a little Zeppelin thanks to Ryan’s thunder drums,” said the Lansing-based frontman. Vasas’ band, Mike Vasas and The Beasts of Burden, got together in spring 2005. With Matt Mepham on guitar, Ryan Malinich on drums and Brian Richard on bass, Vasas found that with a live band, his tracks came to life in a way they never had. Their “big break” happened in 2008, when they played a show at the Palace of Auburn Hills opening for Creedence Clearwater Revisited. “That really gave us

the momentum we needed to work,” Vasas said. From there, the guys met and improvised and rehearsed. Vasas, an engineer, started recording and mixing the new tracks. “I probably have 30-plus hours from these sessions completely multi-tracked,” Vasas said. “I would mix and make MP3s out of everything and send it to the band after every rehearsal and we would talk over stuff we liked.” They recorded the new album, “Just Lovely,” at Vasas’ apartment in Lansing, plus a few other spots around Michigan. Lyric-wise, he found himself writing about a psychological concept called, “The Golden Ball.” “My wife told me about this concept, and it’s based off of a couple of Grimm’s fairy tales,” he said. “‘The Golden Ball’ represents the self when we are children — when we have wild imaginations, are wholesome, playful, etc. At some point everybody has to give up the ball to become an adult. “This idea is endlessly fascinating to me and it sets up the themes in the record … is it possible to hold onto the ball, even a little? If so, how?”

The album, which drops Friday at Scene Metrospace in East Lansing, marks the beginning of a busy fall for the band. The guys are looking to do more shows. They’re also releasing a bonus disc that’s only available at live shows called, “Smell the Lovely,” with tracks that didn’t make the record and snippets of rehearsal recordings. There’s also Vasas’ yearlong musical blog project at www.SongsNotByMe.com. “I learn, record and post a different cover song every day in 2010,” he said. “I’m up to more than 260 songs, which is more than 17 albums and 18 hours of material with about 250 different artists represented. “It definitely keeps me busy.”

LIFTED music video Owosso-based hard rock band LIFTED premieres the music video for its single, “Drag You Down,” at The Clearing Venue in Owosso on Saturday. The songs come off the band’s forthcoming album, “The Ready Raven,” out Nov. 12. Those heading to the premiere will check out a short film based on the music video, an acoustic set by the band and, of course, the world premiere of the “Drag You Down” video. The video, directed by Owosso’s Daniel Chipman, is completely local. “‘Drag You Down’ was shot in Lansing, Owosso and Flint, and it’s produced by myself and created and produced by Black Jacket Films, an Owosso-based production company,” said frontman Dan Bennett. “We had actors from all over the Michigan and beyond come to be part of the video and short film.” • LIFTED music video premiere for the single, “Drag You Down” • Doors 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 • $5 suggested donation • The Clearing Venue, 1800 Corunna Ave., Owosso Anne Erickson

(LITTLE, BROWN & CO.)

For some strange but welcome reason, David Sedaris has taken a liking to the Lansing area. He visited the area twice last year, and will be returning twice in the next seven months, including a Wharton Center appearance next April. As hysterical as he is in person, he may be more funny in his writing. His newest release is a departure from the witty, self-deprecating essays for which he became famous, but he has made the transition as smooth as can be, shifting to hilarious fable-type stories featuring anthropomorphic animals as the leading characters. During his last visit to Wharton Center, Sedaris read “The Toad, the Turtle and the Duck,” a grim humored vignette with the aforementioned animals in some sort of a complaint line — think a furry DMV wait-line in Hell — and he had me in tears. Completed with illustrations by Ian Falconer — the author/ illustrator of the bestselling “Olivia” picturebooks — this small compendium is a must for any Sedaris fan.

SPARTAN Homecoming

As MSU breaks Top 15, focus needs to be on Illinois ... not gloating over beating U-M

M

y heart rate has barely slowed down from last Saturday, let alone steadied enough to discuss Homecoming this weekend. I’d love to use this week’s column to thoroughly lambast U-M and their pitiful performance at the Big House against us last week — but really, what’s the use? (That’s right; I’m totally taking the proverbial “high road” and refraining from gloating. This is extremely difficult because I’m quite comfortable cruising on lower levels when it comes to the Wolverines.) But now it’s time to focus on the future. The win over Michigan is always a prominent feather in the cap of Spartan football; but I get the feeling that this season has more potential than many of us originally thought. We’re 6-0 for the first time in more than a decade, ranked in the Top 15 (almost top ten!) in the nation and generating all sorts of media buzz. So, how do we get our boys over the next few humps? It starts on Saturday in Spartan Stadium against surprise Big Ten contender Illinois. The Fighting Illini are deceptively good, as evidenced by their schedule thus far. Their only loss came at the hands of Ohio State; and that was by less than ten points. Last week, they put together a convincing program win over Penn State in a game that surely has their confidence soaring for the trip to E.L. Bottom line? Our coaches, fans and team need to look squarely at each Saturday as it comes, and forget all this jabbering about a 12-0 season. To quote Ice Cube; “Life ain’t a track meet — it’s a marathon ...” I think that sentiment applies to a football season, too. It’s very tempting to look at the remainder of the MSU schedule and think optimistically

A NDI O S T ER S ostersan@gmail.com

about our chances for glory, a BCS bowl and the beginning of what could be a string of successful seasons. The problem is that there are six games between now and that dreamy scenario. Homecoming presents the perfect opportunity to start our campaign for the second half of this season. A win this weekend bolsters the blossoming bravado of the team; while a loss triggers memories of seasons past gone wrong. While many look at the Michigan match-up as the marquee game each year, I think that this season — our time is Game 7. Watch for Spartan special teams to make a big impact when matched up against Illinois. Their three fumbled kick returns cost them against Penn State, and you can trust MSU to capitalize on mistakes more than the Nittany Lions did. Suspended MSU defenseman Chris L. Rucker will be missed in the secondary, mostly because his play this season has been positively stellar compared to his first three seasons at that position. The mid-season letdown many think synonymous with Michigan State football must be quelled if the program seeks to make strides in the future. Let’s keep winning, one game at a time. I’ll start a cardio routine if necessary.

TOP 5 THINGS THAT MAKE HOMECOMING SPECIAL: 1. NIPPY START: Kickoff is at high noon, so bust out the North Face zip-up and magic gloves for tailgating at sunrise. Bloody Mary optional. 2. PEP RALLY: Relive your high school gym assemblies ... but outdoors and with college kids eating ice cream at The Rock at noon on Friday. 3. HALFTIME HIJINX: MSU, Habitat for Humanity & Whirlpool Inc. will present keys to a brand-new home to a lucky MSU student. Expect Spartan co-eds to go nuts in the south endzone for their favorite new kegger host. 4. ALUMNI GALORE: Welcome back Spartans as they haul their Snuggies and children to the annual Homecoming Parade on Friday night, starting at 6 p.m. 5. SWITCH SPORTS: For you nightowl hoops fans, the MSU basketball squads (both men’s and women’s) will tip off their 2010-11 seasons at Midnight Madness, starting at 9:30 p.m. Friday. Admission is free, laughs guaranteed.

Drummer Matt Marriott and guitarist/vocalist Robert Grupido started the band in the fall of 2000 while students at MSU. The downtown Lansing food scene has plenty to offer, but has been lacking a sushi spot. AnQi Sushi Express, which opened in August, has solved that problem in a big (and swift) way. Focusing on quality and speed, you can be in an out in mere minutes, or dine in. It’s the ideal place if you’re looking for a light, healthy — and fast — meal.

THE SCENE AnQi is a cute little place. The bright green and orange of the interior draws you in. Tables are set up along the walls but there aren’t many, as the place is more of a grab-and-go spot. The sushi is set out on the counter, in one of those open, refrigerated areas like you see at the grocery store. Even as we waited in line, more sushi was made and

brought out, so we could attest to the freshness.

THE FOOD There’s a variety of prepackaged sushi available, all around the $4-$10 range. I picked out the fish

roll combination ($5.99), and Laura had the California combo ($5.29). They also have appetizer portions of edamame, a Japanese seaweed salad called chuka and dumplings, which we ordered ($3.99). They also have sushi balls and sushi sandwiches. One thing I usually like with my sushi is the traditional bowl of miso soup, and I’m hoping that can be offered in the future. Each sushi package comes with its own portion of wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. Be sure to get a little plastic cup from the counter, into which you pour your sauce. We also picked up extra soy sauce because the one that came with the meal wasn’t enough. The California combo is six pieces of regular California (seaweed wrapped on the inside) and six pieces of spicy California (seaweed wrapped on the outside)

ANQI SUSHI EXPRESS 111 E. Allegan St., Lansing, 485-9688 www.anqisushi.com • Hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

with a creamy hot sauce on top. The fish combo has three pieces each of tuna, salmon and California rolls. You can tell the sushi is freshly made because the rice isn’t cold or hard. The dumplings were good, but would’ve been even better if they were warmed up.

THE DRINKS We each had a fountain pop for $1.29.

THE DAMAGE $18.92 (including tax)

NEXT TIME AnQi also serves bubble tea, with or without tapioca beads, hot or cold.

Muscle Shores, Ala.-based BoomBox is made up of vocalist/guitarist/producer Zion Rock Godchaux (son of Grateful Dead members Donna Jean and Keith) and drummer/DJ/producer Russ Randolph. The duo meshes rock, house music and psychedelia, and the electrified live show has people buzzing from Miami to California. While guitar solos and funky samples are plentiful, the rhythm really rules. Check out the duo on Saturday at Mac’s Bar in Lansing. • BoomBox • 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 • $10 • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Known almost exclusively for the album’s title track (thanks to “American Pie” and a million bar singalongs), Mancunian pop group James delivered one of the best albums of the ’90s, with the somber, stirring, emotionally staggering album “Laid.” The masterstroke was enlisting Brian Eno to produce, as his subtle sonic touches are a perfect fit for the band’s dramatic arrangements and Tim Booth’s soaring, emotive vocals. Sure, the song “Laid” is a peppy bit of pathosdrenched fun, but it pales in comparison to the gorgeous, gentle build of “Out To Get You” and buoyant strumming of the anthemic “Sometimes (Lester Piggott).” It is common for a ‘one hit wonder’ group to actually have an album (or more) of quality music, and James is one of the greatest examples. If you only know the song, the album “Laid” has the potential to touch you deeply, and resonate with you for years.

When the East Lansing Film Festival returns, it will seem like a rebirth. The festival has been gone for 18 months. It returns in a different season and in different sites. Still, the basics remain. “You get to see films you’d never get to see otherwise,” said festival founder Susan Woods. “There is a communal feeling ... a bond with the other people.” And there’s a huge variety of movies. This year’s films are set in Tibet and Milan and the Alps, in Louisiana and (especially) in Michigan. They range from the bonedry “Happy Poet” to “Spartacus.” Why include a big, old movie in a festival of small, new ones? The crowd sounds, it seems, were recorded at Spartan Stadium. Now “Spartacus” will be in the Hannah Community Center auditorium, which will be busy for eight straight nights. That’s one of many changes. With a trimmed budget (from $120,000 to $100,000), the festival has: • Moved from spring to autumn. “I finally hit • What: East Lansing Film the wall of trying to fight Festival ‘March madness,’” said • Box office: In advance, Woods, whose movies kept at www.elff.com; at being overwhelmed by baseach site, an hour before ketball. the first show • Lost its main site, be• How much? $8, $6 for cause of Wells Hall constudents and seniors, 65 struction. and older; Celebration is • Expanded its use of $8.50, $7.50 for college Hannah. Still from the film “Fairview St.” written, directed and starring Michael McCallum, which is part of the East Lansing Film Festival. fortable seats,” Woods said. w Moved the Lake Michigan Film Competition to Kedzie Hall and from Sunday to Saturday (Oct. 23). That could bring more people to an improved line-up. “The feature-film choices have been getting stronger,” said Erika Noud, who was a volunteer at the first festival and now runs the LMFC. For the directors, festivals offer a chance to talk to audiences or simply to observe. “They laughed at the right places, they got quiet at the right places,” Amy Weber said, the day after her movie (“Annabelle & Bear”) won four awards at a Port Huron festival. Mike McCallum — a waiter by vocation and filmmaker by passion — knows the feeling. His Lansing-made “Fairview St.” has been in 19 film festivals in 12 states; it has won eight awards, ranging from best soundtrack (Beloit, Wis.) to auteur-of-the-year (Muskogee, Okla.). McCallum hits some festivals, with limits. “There are money constraints, crappy-car constraints.” Occasionally, a Michigan film hits the top of the festival world. Sultan Sharrief was wrapping up a Detroitto-Mississippi drive, when he got the news: His “Bilal’s Stand” had been accepted to Sundance, the nation’s top film festival; the producer had e-mailed him the phone number to call. “I’m running around with my laptop, trying to find wi-fi,” Sharrief said. “I’m leaning toward the neighbor’s window, trying to get something.” Soon, he was at Sundance, where directors are savored. “You have this badge and you can get into everything; you’re going non-stop, from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m.” It was a festive view of the movie experience.

‘Madman’ (30th Anniversary Edition LJ-0100043449

C ODE RED (88 MIN, RATED R)

In the pantheon of woodsy, rural slashers where inane Caucasian youths meet a grisly demise, there is “Friday the 13th,” “The Burning,” and “Sleepaway Camp.” I lobby aggressively for the inclusion of the criminally underrated “Just Before Dawn,” and now present another slice of low budget excellence for your consideration; the gruesome, tremendously entertaining bit of insanity that is “Madman.” If this was a fair and just world, Madman Marz masks would dangle proudly alongside Jason and Freddy come Halloween, so memorable a butcher he is. Alas, “Madman” is relegated to ‘cult classic’ status, and that it is. With creepy, moonlit settings and a palpable enthusiasm, it is pure, glorious ’80s slasher fun. Code Red deserves a medal for the phenomenal work they do, releasing gobs of fantastic, forgotten genre titles. “Madman” is another feather in their cap, and a must-see for lovers of camp(y) horror.

‘THE EVIL DEAD’

“Evil Dead: The Musical” opens at Michigan State University this weekend through Oct. 24. Gregoire Seyrig | courtesy photo

• As part of the East Lansing Film Festival, the MSU Theater Department will hold a free screening of the film “The Evil Dead.” • CommArts Building room 147 • 7:30 p.m.

If you want to get splattered with blood, poop, and vomit, you’ll have to pay extra. That’s what Rob Roznowski, director of “Evil Dead: The Musical,” reports about the show that opens at Michigan State University this week. And don’t, he warns, wear your dress-up clothes if you’re going to sit in the first several rows. “Wear clothes you can get ruined,” said Roznowski. “We’re using gallons of (the fake blood) a night. It’s ridiculous — never thought I’d be doing this — blood, then vomit, and then poop.” This is definitely not your grandfather’s musical. There aren’t tuxes and tap dancing or cute curly-headed girls with dogs. Instead, there is murder, mayhem, demons and amputations. Less than a year after the successful run of “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” the MSU Department of Theater decided to try something similar to keep reaching out to the new audiences it gained when it put on the cult classic. So they turned to another cult classic — one with some strong MSU ties. “After the success of ‘Rocky Horror’ and seeing how popular that was with the students, we realized there is a large market of untapped theater goers right here on campus that we’re trying to connect with,” said Roznowski. The musical is based on the movies “The Evil Dead,” “The Evil Dead II” and “Army of Darkness” — three cult horror movies created by MSU alum Sam Raimi. The original 1981 film featured a group of teenagers who went to spend a weekend at a cabin in the woods only to unleash an evil that turned all but one of them into zombies. One of the zombies in the original movie was Betsy Baker, an MSU alumna who earned her degree in theater and

classical voice. She played the role of Linda and now travels around the country with two other former cast mates as The Ladies of the Evil Dead. She’ll also be traveling to MSU for the week and riding in the theater department’s Homecoming float. “We’ve been making a major effort to connect with our alumni,” said Roznowski. “We had already chosen the musical and she came to one of our alumni reunions. She has been an amazing representative of the department and is really supportive. It was fortuitous and amazing that these two projects came together.” She arrives in town this week as a guest artist with her appearance in the Homecoming parade coinciding with the opening night of “Evil Dead: The Musical.” The theater department will put on two shows that night, at 8 p.m. and midnight. She’ll then stay in town as a joint residency with the MSU Theater department and the East Lansing Film Festival. The musical doesn’t even try to take the movies seriously. It fills them with rock songs that have titles as vulgar as the blood is plentiful. The music is one of the first indicators that the musical is less in the horror genre than it is the spoof genre. “It really is lowbrow entertainment,” said Roznowski, admitting that he’s come to love it. “We spend so much time being highfalutin, it’s great to figure out the mechanics of really base physical comedy. Camp is really difficult.” Roznowski said the rehearsal process went a lot more smoothly once they gave in to what the musical is really meant to be. It’s also a musical he suspects will appeal to many people beyond the traditional theater crowd. “It’s a fun rock score,” said Roznowski. “There is a lot of swearing — which I love too — and they use it so poetically. If you like swearing, blood, and people getting their heads cut off with chain saws, you’ll love this.”

Crawling under police barricades, leaping over monster tires, swinging from monkey bars, running on concrete barrier balance beams, climbing thousands of stairs and scrambling over cabs and city buses throughout the streets of Chicago. It’s all part of the Men’s Health Urbanathlon. East Lansing Adventure Boot Camp owner Matthew Wachterhauser will compete in the race on Saturday, Oct. 16. The 9-mile obstacle course travels through Chicago landmarks like Navy Pier, Soldier Field and DuSable Harbor. “I always ask our campers to physically challenge themselves, so I wanted to walkthe-talk and set an example by taking on the unique challenges of the Urbanathlon while also supporting a good cause,” Wachterhauser said. The event is expected to draw about 7,000 participants from across the country. It is a fundraiser for the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping people with physical disabilities pursue an active lifestyle. • For more info about the race, go to www.menshealthurbanathlon.com.

Female-fronted horror rock The Creepshow is tailor-made for Halloween. The Ontario-based psychobilly band writes songs about early horror films and B-movies, and live, they bring a dramatic mix of onstage antics and high-energy rockabilly tracks. The Creepshow’s current, 11-track full-length, “They All Fall Down” (Stomp Records), brings a wavering mix of country-tinged, psycho punk ‘n’ roll. It’s a musical pull so powerful, seeing the guys — and gal — live is really the only way to experience it. You’ll have that chance Monday, when the group plays Mac’s Bar. Ready to celebrate Fright Night a little early? This, my friend, is for you. • The Creepshow, more • 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18 • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 484-6795 • $10 Anne Erickson

but it’s a nice place. The first time I stepped in here I said, ‘I want to buy this place.’” I don’t know if you have to be friendly to own an old bar, but it helps; as does a sense of history and humor. Case in point: the awesome sign over the door from the ’60s that proclaims “Mayfair Bar: BIG SCREEN T-V.” In addition to this delightful artifact, the bar also boasts historic booths, customized by the carvings of patrons. Story has to re-stain them every couple of months as customers

still make their marks on them. Now that’s living history. The food and drinks are great, too. The bar has a modest tap selection, but it includes a decent mix of standard domestic fare and tastier brews, such as Sam Adam’s Octoberfest and Michigan Brewing Company’s IPA. The yummy tacos weren’t the only menu surprise. The Mayfair is known for their big burgers made of meat ground fresh daily. Their Board of Water and Light Chili Cookoff award-winning chili is a homemade standout on the menu. And there’s a free popcorn machine; and there’s a framed toilet bowl on the wall. It’s pretty much the coolest bar ever. Natalie Burg is a writer and cheerleader of Michigan businesses — particularly ones with wine lists and numerous beers on tap. Here’s something I didn’t know before stumbling upon The Mayfair Bar: veterinary students love tacos. So much so that immediately upon entering, my friends and I were asked if we were vet students, simply because we were there, younger than 30 and it was Taco Tuesday. Although none of us are veterinarily inclined, we soon appreciated the regular vet kids’ high opinion of the weekly event. I was initially skeptical of ordering two tacos at $1.75 each from the small, neighborhood bar. However, when the burrito-sized tacos arrived paired with homemade salsa and a $2.50 beer special, I realized that the vet students weren’t just habitual — they were geniuses! The amazing thing about The Mayfair is that the huge, cheap, delicious homemade tacos and great beer deals aren’t even the best part. The bar’s best feature is that the staff are the nicest humans on the planet. No exaggeration; the owner invited my friends and I to play shuffleboard with him at the American Legion Hall. “We have very little turnover here,” said Keli, our waitress and nine-year Mayfair veteran who was happily working on her birthday and offering to share her cupcakes with us. “Judy keeps saying she’ll retire,” she said, nodding at the bartender, “but she’s been here for 25 years, so she’s not going anywhere.” Brett Story, who has owned The Mayfair for the last 16 of its 76 years in operation, is clearly the catalyst for the bar’s general joviality. “You have to be friendly when you’re an old bar like this,” he said. “We’re just a neighborhood bar,

Family-friendly factor: Higher than it used to be. According to owner Brett Story, the smoke used to be so thick, “you couldn’t even see the door.” Since the smoking ban passed, the place has cleaned right up. So much so that Story said their food sales have spiked. Hook-up factor: There’s dancing on Saturday nights, and though they get pretty busy in there, I get the feeling that the crowd includes a lot of locals who see quite a bit of each other. Now if they could get those crazy vet students to show up on Saturdays, too. A Claim to Local Fame: The Mayfair Bar is a neighborhood favorite of Ron Mason, who had just stopped in the Friday before my arrival to celebrate his induction into the MSU Hall of Fame. For those who aren’t aware, Mason is famous for being the doppelganger of Victor Kiriakis from “Days of our Lives.” He used to coach a local hockey team, too.
