Party in costume with Vibe

wanted to learn about the business end of being a band and better their live show. Both bands work hard, and we’re proud of them. NOISE: What are you looking forward to most at the show? Brems: Actually, we’re just looking for a reason to dress up in costumes! The Loft is fun for both families with kids and college students. It’s a venue where everyone can have a good time. We have fans of all ages, so for an event like this, parents can drop off their kids and know they’re at a safe event, and the 21-plus crowd can enjoy a drink.

The Outer Vibe’s sepiatoned blanket of moodiness unfolds on “Monster EP,” the band’s latest release, full of electronic beats, trumpet melodies and clean, poppy vocals. The Grand Rapids alt-rock group makes new wave, synth-pop-rock tracks with unforgettable hooks and catchy melodies. They also have a big hand in the MSU Community Music School’s Rock Camp. Singer Sean Zuidgeest, drummer Jeff Brems, guitarist Nick Hosford, trumpet player Lisa Kacos and bass player Andrew Dornoff play a Halloween show Sunday at The Loft in Lansing. Brems spoke with NOISE about the costume show, Rock Camp and more. NOISE: Tell us about your work with the MSU Community Music School Rock Camp. Brems: Rock Camp is for guys and girls, ages 12-19, with some experience at guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or singing … They’re all high school students with

great attitudes and enthusiasm for music. We teach Rock Camp students everything we know and everything we’ve learned in our 11 years of being a band. NOISE: How did you get involved with the camp? Brems: Lisa was a graduate music theory student at the MSU College of Music, and the MSU Community Music School had been brainstorming ideas for a school of rock. Some of Lisa’s MSU professors saw The Outer Vibe perform and recommended us as instructors. We helped get the first summer camp up and running in July of 2009, and since then, the MSU camp has more than doubled in size. NOISE: What do you have planned for the Halloween Party at the Loft? Brems: It’s an all-ages costume party and rock concert. NOISE: Some bands from the camp are playing the show, right? Brems: Yes, Broken Silence and My Imperfect Plan. The members of Broken Silence were put in a band together at our first Rock Camp. My Imperfect Plan was already a band and we met them at this summer’s Rock Camp. They signed up because they

Grant Woell

Lansing’s Woell performs ‘The Penguin Book of Ghost Stories’ E DI T E D BY MICHAEL NEW TON (PENGUIN CLASSICS)

As my final suggestion for the month of spooks, I offer a fantastic new collection of ghost stories from Penguin Classics, which does a great job with its anthologies. I am a huge fan of creepy Gothic tales of specters and own a number of collections, and this is a strong addition to the shelf. Along with reprints of famous stories like “The Monkey’s Paw,” there are excellent lesser-known creepers like “The Haunted and the Haunters,” a Victorian tale that hints toward many of the tropes found in 20th century tales of the demonic. Each story has a correlating footnote section with an author bio and description of its original publication, as well as explanatory bits for strange references, slang and phrasings. Top it all off with an excellent introduction exploring the ongoing appeal of ghost stories, a chronology of such stories and suggested further reading, and you have enough spooky goodness to last until next Halloween.

WHI T NE Y SPOT TS whitneyspotts@gmail.com

Lansing-based singer-songwriter Grant Woell is only 16, but he has already released a full-length album, “In the Moment,” and played to 15,000 people at Lifest 2010, a Christian outdoor music festival in Oshkosh, Wis. That’s pretty impressive for someone who isn’t even old enough to vote. Listening to tracks off the release, it’s easy to see why fans — especially young ones — are catching on. Woell’s sound is earnest, honest, fresh and pop-friendly. It represents the hopes and dreams of many young folks, searching for their place in the world. He brings that sound to The Loft in downtown Lansing today, opening for Stephen Bryce Avary’s popular altrock project The Rocket Summer. “I’m really excited to be playing this show because The Rocket Summer has been a huge influence on my music,” Woell said. “I feel honored to be selected as the only local opener, welcoming Bryce to the Lansing music scene.” • Grant Woell, He Is We, The Rocket Summer • 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 • The Loft, (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. FIERCE BEARD HAS BECOME HIS FOLLICULAR CALLING CARD The pursuit of fantastic facial hair is not all fun and games. Taking care of a beard — which after 15 months of growth is currently much longer than the hair on John Buckler’s head — takes work. “I went out and bought a hair dryer for the first time in my life,” he said. “I’ve never blow dried my hair ever. (Now) I wake up and give it a few brushes — I can’t use a comb anymore, I have to use a brush.” The beard is also long enough now that it draws stares even when it’s not styled into a crazy shape. “There’s a lot of double takes and a lot of staring,” Buckler said. Kids think it looks like Santa. College students love it too. Buckler is president and co-founder of the Lansing-based Great American Fierce Beard Association, which started as a goofy challege between college friends to see who could grow the fiercest beard. “It’s an intentionally ambiguous word,” he said. “What’s fierce to you might not be fierce to me.” Now the organization regularly gets at least 15 members at meetings, and the GAFBO guys do community service projects or sell fake mustaches as fundraisers. He and fellow GAFBO members will be in Old Town’s Dicken’s Village this year, pretending to sell tonics and putting fake beards and mustaches on

people. “Even before I had a large beard, just having a beard, you see another guy with a decent beard, you give a little head nod,” Buckler said. “Beard recognizes beard.” The recognition is more than just head nods now. Earlier this year Buckler finished fourth in the freestyle category at a national beard and mustache competition in Oregon. “I missed out on a trophy by two points,” he said. “At first I was a little annoyed, then I realized this is a beard competition in Oregon. I don’t care. This is so much fun.“ More than 200 competitors and a few thousand spectators gathered in an outdoor amphitheater for the facial hair frenzy. “I’ve been to five competitions this year and I have won three of them,” he said. “It wasn’t until I switched over to the freestyle that I started winning.” He couldn’t give up his beard for Halloween, and instead is using it to make him look more like Snarf from the cartoon “Thundercats”. Buckler said having the beard doesn’t make every public outing feel like he’s going out in character, even when it’s styled with flair. “I think it brings me out more,” he said. “More people approach me, so I talk to people I might not have otherwise.”

The drawer of derby clothes in Jana Lemenu’s closet is bursting with rainbow petticoats and fishnet stockings. As a jammer for the Lansing Derby Vixens roller derby team, the former Michigan State University rugby star has fallen in love with both the athleticism and crazy attire of derby. “It’s a fun combination of a really aggressive sport and theater,” Lemenu said. “As much camp and over-the-top theatrics it has to it, it’s the same level of absolute aggression. Roller derby is a very fine balance between the two.” She broke her ankle at a recent match, but plans to be back in action by the league’s first home bout at the Lansing Center on Feb. 12.

“Our bruises are about as colorful as our outfits,” Lemenu said. Her injury joins the list of broken ankles, several broken tailbones, sprained knees, torn menisci, shoulder sprains and other injuries the team has endured so far. “The clothing gets as beaten up as we do,” Lemenu said. But she argues that kind of makes it more fun. If the neon fishnets are a little more worn in now, that makes them cooler. “A lot of these are very proper women who work for the state or are teachers,” Lemenu said. “Six people on the team are working on doctorates. They get to just wear this with a badge of honor that they are tough women by night.”

The costumes in roller derby help the athletes channel their alter egos. They also have derby names. Lemenu decided on Emma Knockuout after Rainbow Bites was taken. “I wanted to be a hard-hitting person,” she said. “I asked, What did I want to hear when I was skating around hearing my name announced? And it sounded right.” Lemenu wears a suit to work everyday in her customer service job. She photographs weddings on the weekend. “It’s kind of a fun Clark Kent/ Superman thing,” she said. “I’m really really nice to everyone and everything during the day and this is my chance at night to be something totally different.”

Egyptian cabaret style belly-dancer, Autumn “Johara” Liikala, 24, of East Lansing.

hara and dances Egyptian cabaret style, not the folkloric styles, which are not often performed in a commercial setting. “It’s showy,” she said about the style. “It’s something you see performed at parties and onstage. It’s more fun, it’s more lively. It’s what you think of when you think of belly dancing.” Liikala’s dance costumes are elaborate. “I’m very picky with my costumes,” she said. The attire is always from Egypt or one of the other Middle Eastern countries. Her favorite one is one that she doesn’t like to wear for just any weekend gig. It’s bright orange with crystals and chiffon all over it, fringe, and heavy with glass beads. “It’s a style of costume that’s a classic, that’s famous

among belly dance costumes and it’s a style of costume that my favorite belly dancers wear,” she said. “It’s sort of the Valentino of belly dance, where you can tell the style when you see it. It’s very, very fancy. I love it.” Belly dancing is a side business for Liikala, who is also working toward a Masters degree in counseling at Spring Arbor University. “Right now it’s not too bad,” she said about the demands of being a performer and a student. “It’s a lot of private parties, I do enjoy doing the occasional charity show, birthday parties and belly grams.” Most of the belly grams are ordered for birthday parties or promotions, once for a new baby. She always brings her own music, and boom box to

play it. “It will probably remain a side business,” she said. “If I were to make it a full time business, for one I’d have to move to an area where it is more popular.” Working as a solo belly dancer gives her perpetual incentive to stay active. This became even more important after she was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which has slowed her down some. Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by long-term, body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles, and tendons. Regular exercise helps her keep the condition in check. “That’s definitely a reason I see myself doing this for a while, because I will always have (fibromyalgia),” she said.

Autumn Liikala fell in love with henna body art first, but her love of belly dancing has lasted longer. As a teen learning as many dance styles she could, Liikala gravitated toward the exotic. “My mom always put me in just about every activity but dance was the thing that I loved,” she said. “At the same time when I was a kid I loved learning about other cultures.” She couldn’t find belly dancing classes near her as a teen, so Liikala ordered how-to videos to learn. It wasn’t until years later that she found a local teacher to help her technique. “The body is your instrument when you’re a belly dancer,” she explained. “You’re portraying the percussion.” She goes by the name Jo-

5 HORROR DVDS WORTH FINDING

SH AWN PA RK ER shawnmparker@gmail.com

Let’s cut to the chase; modern horror movies are, by and large, awful. They favor (the wrong) style over substance, rely too much on gruesome situations that aim for realism but are disastrously forced, and seem to operate under the misguided notion that abrasive editing and a droning soundtrack are the stuff of nightmares. Each year, there is an exception or two, as a creepy gem with the right blend of atmosphere and shock reaches those lucky enough to notice. But for anyone with a penchant for the macabre, it is positively frustrating It is easy to point fingers at an audience desensitized to violence, one that needs the quotient amped, the stakes continuously raised, to stay entertained. Or at the film industry and producers with dollar signs

in their eyes, interfering with and tainting any project showing a hint of spirit. Whatever the reason, audiences are prevented from seeing more atmospheric, surreal and stylistically gruesome movies. For many fright film fans, the heyday of horror cinema was the ’70s and early ’80s, when operatic, bizarre European imports shared billing with cerebral thrillers like “The Exorcist” and “Don’t Look Now,” and the introduction of fun, throwaway slashers that entertained as well as terrified. This was the time when stylized, over-the-top violence and dreamlike imagery were the norm. While that time is gone, replaced with remakes, reimaginings and sequels, those searching for something unusual have options, namely delving into that bygone era through DVD. Sara Kirsten, Senior Manager at Lansing’s Video to Go and a devout horror fan, says she thinks people are drawn to the extreme side of cinema as an escape and a way to experience the impossible.

“I want to experience something I’m never going to in real life,” she said. “When you’re dealing with the supernatural, absolutely anything is possible. I think that’s what draws people to horror.” Come Halloween time, the curious and devoted seek out the rare retail store that stocks eclectic thrillers, and turn to Netflix or rental locations for their fix of fear. Kirsten said her store carries a few hundred horror DVDs, and sees a dramatic increase in rentals in October. “Now that we have ‘Halloween Hits’ in the front of the store, almost every customer has at least one DVD from it when they check out,” she said. Whether located in stores or online, the fact remains that those looking for an original, unusual horror movie are increasingly finding what they want outside of cinemas. This Halloween, with hundreds upon hundreds of bizarre, chilling and unheralded films available, skip the theater and dig into the delirious, macabre world available on DVD.

With an emphasis on cult and European films, these thrillers could be five of the best, most bizarre shockers you’ve never heard of. • “Living Dead at Manchester Morgue” (1975). A moody zombie film set in the British countryside, ‘Manchester’ is gruesome, downbeat and surprisingly well-acted. • “Maniac” (1980). The antithesis of the fun slasher, “Maniac” is the nasty, gory but always compelling plunge into the mind of a killer in New York, played to perfection by the late Joe Spinell. • “Last House on Dead End Street” (1977). One of the grungiest films ever recorded, the faux-snuff scenes in “Dead End” are so low-budget as to almost look real. Hard to find, harder to get through. • “House” (1977). No description does justice to the unhinged, unsettling titular abode in Obayashi’s cult classic. 90 minutes of rampant delirium and visual insanity. • “Tenebre” (1982). Less known than “Suspiria” but almost as effective, “Tenebre” is a mystery-thriller featuring some of Argento’s more extreme setpieces and a lack of narrative logic that leaves you disoriented.

5 FAMILY-FRIENDLY HALLOWEEN FILMS • “Monster Squad” (1987). Like “Goonies” with monsters, “Squad” features a terrific, young cast, iconic quotes (“Wolfman has nards!”) and is a great introduction to Universal’s creature stable. • “The Worst Witch” (1986). Corny but endearing tale of a struggling young witch at magic school that anticipated Harry Potter. Bonus: Tim Curry as the Bowie-like, singing Grand Wizard. • “The Gate” (1987). When pint-sized demons escape from a backyard portal, it is up to a group of kids to drive them back. Fun adventure-horror, with some great stop motion animation. • “Transylvania 6-5000” (1985). Slapstick laughs abound for two rookie reporters searching for Frankenstein’s Monster in Transylvania. Features a pre-Seinfeld Michael Richards, wacky as ever. • “Fright Night” (1985). Suitable for teens, this horror-comedy is one of the most memorable vampire films of the ’80s. Rated R, but still has a sense of fun underneath the scares.

The living dead arise at annual Zombie Night Anne Erickson | NOISE

Ready to get in the Halloween spirit? Indulge your zombie obsession as Schuler Books & Music in the Eastwood Towne Center presents the Second Annual Zombie Night Thursday, Oct. 28. Lest you think we’re trying to trick you into smearing blood all over yourself and heading out to Eastwood, consider that the event will entail a fresh collection of zombie pin-up photos by Lansing-based photographer Jena McShane, featuring local models. The photos are part of the “Beauty and Brains 2011” calendar, which will be available to order at the party for $17 each. McShane got into pin-up photography during her first year in Lansing Community College’s photography school. “I always loved old pin-ups,” she said. “I had this visual literacy class where I could shoot whatever I wanted, so I chose pin-ups for my subject and decided to do the history of the pinup, and it got a great response.” Pin-up portraits, McShane said, are the epitome of “sexy but not raunchy.” “I love the cuteness of it,” she said. “Pin-ups are old-school. I love vintage style anything.” As for how the zombie idea came into play, McShane said she’s not quite sure.

“I have no idea!” she said. “I enjoy having projects for myself even if I’m not school, so I wanted to do a pin-up thing and put a spin on it. Since I like zombie movies and zombies are a big deal right now, I thought I would mesh them together. “I told some people about the idea, and they flipped out.” So one day last year, she shot 15 girls in one day in her basement. She sold the calendars at Schuler’s first zombie party, and from there, the response was great. This year’s calendar was captured in a completely different way. Each girl was photographed on location, from a local farm to the Thomas Cooley Gardens to Hiawatha Elementary School. The cover was shot at this year’s Muskegon Zombie Walk. Each month has a theme, “March has an Irish theme. April has April showers. August is ‘back-to-school,’” said McShane. Lansing-based makeup artist Sierra VanDenHeuvel did makeup for most of the models, which include the Lansing State Journal’s own Anne Erickson and Kathleen Takacs. Schuler Books & Music promotion coordinator Whitney Spotts organized the zombie party and also appears in the calendar. McShane said she’s most excited for people to see how different this year’s pictures are from last year’s. “We put a lot of thought and time into it, and I’m looking forward to everyone seeing the final project.” Those attending the zombie party may enter a

We’re on the brink — and Saturday’s game decides a lot for MSU Eisley Chris Phelps photo

Family band stops at MSU Eisley is a family affair. Three sisters, a brother and a cousin make up the Tyler, Texas-based indie rock band. The group is bonded by not only blood but also by an admiration for songwriting greats as Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Paul McCartney. Eisley began in 1997, weaving fairytale-inspired lyrics into their songs. In the early 2000s, the gang caught the attention of Warner Bros. and inked a deal. They left the label this year, but they’re still going strong with almost 60 shows booked through November, including one Friday at the MSU Union Ballroom. Michigan-based Fusion Shows and the Michigan State University Residence Hall Association (RHA) present the show. • Eisley, Ives The Band, Christie Dupree • Doors 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 • MSU Union Ballroom on the campus of Michigan State University • Public tickets $10 in advance at fusionshows.com; student tickets $5, available exclusively at Flat, Black, and Circular in downtown East Lansing (limit two per valid student ID), $12 at the door Anne Erickson

As the seconds ticked off the clock and Wisconsin started to celebrate their victory over Iowa this past weekend, an unfamiliar sensation began to creep into my brain. It was the dreaded feeling that every Spartan fan tries to avoid: hope. Fresh off our admittedly lucky win over Northwestern, the Badgers succeeded in placing us firmly atop the Big Ten rankings, and launched us into the Top 5 in the BCS. There was literally a moment on Saturday when I began to scratch my head: how did we get here? We got here by playing each game as it came; one at a time. With plays like “Little Giants” and “Mousetrap” — methodically plowing through the first eight games on the schedule. (PS: How unbelievably smooth is Coach Dantonio in post-game on-field pressers? The guy basically spits butter.) If I was purposefully ignoring the hype before — I’m buying the farm now. If you thought you were amped for the Michigan matchup earlier this month? Psh. Wait until Saturday afternoon when you’re so excited for kickoff you forget to pull the wings out of the oven. And if you think odds makers fixing us as a seven-point underdog going to Iowa City will factor into our game plan, you’d be sorely mistaken. The last three MSU-Iowa games have been decided by a total of 12 points. For some reason, MSU fans look at U-M and Ohio State as starred games on the schedule every year — but the Hawkeyes are the ones that have given us our most bitter last-minute losses in the most competitive contests. Saturday will be different from past years in one specific way: in 2010, it matters. A lot. Saturday will make-or-break the Hawkeyes’ season, with respect to Big Ten championship hopes and

A NDI O S T ER S ostersan@gmail.com

BCS bowl bids. Saturday has the potential to catapult MSU from media mutt to championship contender. On Saturday, my head might explode before the ball even gets off the tee. I love when everyone expects us to lose, because it’s usually right then when MSU wins a big one. By Halloween, the seven teams in the polls that remain unbeaten will be whittled down to four or less. If MSU is one of those teams, conversations start to go a little differently in and around East Lansing. A win Saturday gets Spartan alums scouring Expedia.com for cheap tickets to Pasadena on January 1 … or even more optimistically, Glendale (Ariz.) on January 10. A loss gets them thinking about basketball season. I’ve been very lucky in my first couple years here at NOISE, writing about a university that’s given us a preseason topranked hoops squad that delivers. I guess I didn’t anticipate being lucky enough to write about a Top 5 football team, too.

In the world of bars, there’s a lot of disingenuousness out there. If you find yourself at any given drinking hole on any given night you’ll find a lot of weird, fried stuff pretending to be food, fake people pretending to be cool, cheesy bartenders, weak drinks and a lot of sad excuses for beer. Not at the Waterfront Bar & Grille inside the Lansing City Market. This place is real — refreshingly, delightfully, call-your-friendsto-meet-you-there-immediately real. The coolers are stocked with real Michigan beer; the bar is packed — literally packed at 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday — with real, chat-able, pleasant Lansing humans of various ages; the food is real food, with 90 percent of the ingredients coming directly from the market floor. And if my Cajun salmon salad was any honest sampling, it’s real good too. It’s also really small at the moment, but that’s about to change. Although the bar proper takes up just one cozy corner of the market building, the outdoor patio that has been used all summer and fall for blues music and tailgate parties is being enclosed with glass to expand the yearround seating capacity. An upper level is planned to extend above the bar area. But it will never be a huge place, and that’s part of its charm. The Waterfront just opened this summer under

the ownership of Arby Schleman and Scott and Andy Simmons. The three decided to seize the opportunity of opening a bar in the Lansing City Market to create a bar with the same focus on quality, locally-sourced products as the market itself. As fastidious as they are about the “local” half of that equation (even the paper products are local), there’s just as much emphasis on the “quality” part. On tap, the unique beer selection expands to touch on local (such as Uncle John’s Winery’s Apple Cherry), to regional (such as Goose Island’s delightful Sofie) and beyond (such as the original Belgian Hoegaarden). And the food? Don’t get me started on the food. Fresh salads, paninis, wraps – all

with seasonal, local ingredients. Oh, and for private parties, they’ll throw together five-course meals prepared by their revered Chef Lucy. “We’re the only river dining in Lansing,” said Schleman, “which we think is really special. We try to live up to that with going all-out to make our customers happy.” There certainly were a lot of happy customers during my visit. The crowd was a laid-back mix of families, couples and after-work folks sharing bottles of Michigan wines, chattering together across the U-shaped bar, and generally having a great time. “It’s a relaxed, hang-out atmosphere,” Schleman said. “It’s earthy, it’s fun, and it’s good people. You don’t get any better people than City Market people.”

On Saturdays, a husband and wife will come in, the husband will sit down and have a beer at the bar. About 20 minutes later his wife will come by with her hands full of groceries and taps him. Then the next guy sits down.” Specials & events: The Waterfront features live music Thursdays through Saturdays and hosts regular events like gameday tailgating. Happy hour is daily from opening until 7 p.m. with $1 off all drinks, and Thursdays feature $10 wines. Even the bar is local: No really, the actual bar. The finished wood bartop is reclaimed wood from the 2007 Williamston tornado. All three owners are from or are connected to Williamston, and they even built and finished the bar itself. Canstruction competition The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Mid-Michigan chapter will host its first Canstruction competition Saturday at the Meridian Mall. Canstruction is an international charity competition where architects, interior designers and their students design and build huge structures made entirely from cans of food, using cans as building blocks and labels as the paint. Four teams will compete, building projects all day Saturday. The projects will remain on display in the Meridian Mall concourse through Nov. 7. After they come down, the canned food items will be donated to the Greater Lansing Food Bank. The winner will go on to a national competition this spring. “The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about the plight of the hungry in the area,” AIA Mid-Michigan President Dan Bollman said. “We want to raise awareness that at this time of year, the shelves are getting bare, and we wanted to do something fun to help replenish the supply.” • Canstruction competition • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30; canstruction projects will be on display through Nov. 7 • The Meridian Mall concourse, 1982 W.
