Lansing metal band lives to play live music “No matter what, you always can turn to music,” says Adam Ray. “If you had a bad day, had a great day or hate life, music will take you to that place where you want to be and let you forget about everything else.” Ray knows the power and joy of music. He fronts All Ends Black, an up-and-coming metal band out of Lansing. Formed in 2007, guitarist Doug Horstman and drummer Damien Striff met up and started crafting original, heavy-hitting music, inspired by the likes of Machine Head, Mudvayne and Sepulatra. After going through a few lineup changes, the current formation of Ray, Horstman, Striff and Darrol Hunt (bass and keys), All Ends Black unfolded, and the dudes put their sights on getting out

band’s first headlining show at the venue. Expect a variety of fist-pumping metal tracks. Hardcore beats, staccato guitar-powered riffs, thrash metal tempos — it’s all there. “Every song we have sounds different,” Ray says. “It surprises me sometimes when I listen to our material.”

and playing live. Playing live is the heart of All Ends Black. “The best thing about playing music is being able to perform live and show the raw emotion that comes out on stage,” Ray says. “We like to show that we worked so hard putting in to making this so people will enjoy it.” He’s chuffed to have already opened for national bands Soulfly and The Misfits. “Opening for Soulfly was amazing, since Max (Cavalera, lead singer) is one of our idols,” he says. “It was a great honor.” And while All Ends Black takes cues from metal-culture touchstones such as Pantera, the sound is still fresh: “We’re a metal band that likes to blend a little of every thing we like as a band and make our own original sound,” Ray says. On the slate for 2011: playing more shows and recording a full-length this summer. More immediate, catch All Ends Black on Friday, Jan. 7, at The Loft in downtown Lansing for the

LOFTY LIVING

NOISE loves to give you ideas for where to eat, rock out or discover something new in your city. But you can’t hit a concert or go out to dinner every night of the week. Some nights — especially this time of year — there’s nothing better than snuggling in with a home-cooked meal, favorite movie or good book. Read on to hear how sevearl local dwellers have turned their apartments into spaces that feel like home.

| lansingnoise.com

Clockwise from top: Rooftop deck: Schmitt’s penthouse apartment sports a spacious deck with a view of downtown Lansing and Lugnuts’ fireworks. Bit of whimsy: Schmitt’s bachelor pad has a sense of humor, from an air hockey table in the bedroom to a jelly bean machine and toys along the shelves. Unique art: Schmitt searches for original artwork at summer festivals and keeps ticket stubs from fun nights out in his mirror.

TIM SCHMITT Tim Schmitt, 32, lives in downtown Lansing in the Pere Marquette lofts. The space: 1,150 square-foot, tri-level penthouse loft with rooftop deck. Master bedroom and bathroom take up top level. The rent: $1,200. Can’t beat his: View. From his vantage point in the loft just off Michigan Avenue, Schmitt and his friends can watch fireworks from the Lansing Lugnuts’ games on his deck with built-in seating.

How do you define your sense of style? I’m a total minimalist, I don’t like clutter. But I can’t let stuff go. As I replace stuff I’m going toward that look. I read a lot of Dwell. You have some unique art pieces on the walls. Where did they come from? I’ve become a bit of an art collector over the years. Some of it is from college, some of it is from art festivals, autographed band posters. There’s

meaning behind every piece in the house. The East Lansing Art Festival is a fantastic place to get good art at a really good price. I bought five pieces of art (there) last year. They do such a good job getting a diverse group at the art festival that no matter what your tastes are, you’re probably going to find something you like. What’s your favorite element of the space? I’m such a chef and baker. I like creating and I like to eat. As awesome as the deck is, (my favorite element) has to be the kitchen. I have people over on a regular basis for dinner, and we’ll do desserts a lot. We’ll just walk upstairs and eat on the deck in the summer. What are the challenges of the space? The biggest challenge is it took me a while to get used to the heating and cooling. The thermostat is upstairs in the bedroom, but the (heating) unit is down here in the kitchen, and the kitchen gets heat coming in the elevator shaft. So the kitchen is always boiling. The living room

has all the windows, so it’s cold. I keep the heat pretty low and just end up using blankets and sweatshirts because it gets so hot (in the kitchen) and that’s where I am most of the time. What made you choose this apartment? I looked a lot along Michigan Avenue and I looked a lot in Old Town. I knew I wanted to live on the bus line, and since I work in East Lansing, it’s really easy. Any advice for someone considering a move to downtown? If you know the area a little bit, I’d ask people. Everyone knows someone who has or knows about a cool space. If there are second stories on buildings, they’re probably residential spaces if it’s not obviously an office. That’s a good way to run into new spots.

How do you define your sense of style? • Margaret:If I had to pick, it would be more modern, but in this place it’s just so easy to go vintage that it’s hard to avoid it. Inspiration being lack of money, everything is hand-medowns. Some of these pieces I wouldn’t pick to have in a modern apartment, but they fit the space really well.

Margaret and Lance Brinkman, both 26, live in downtown Charlotte with Gwyn and Puma, their cats. The space: 2,500 square foot loft The rent: $1,050 Can’t beat their: Entertaining space. The wide open floor plan and spacious kitchen makes the apartment perfect for throwing a dinner party or all out monster mash for Halloween.

MARGARET AND LANCE BRINKMAN

Next week: Patty Wieber’s downtown loft

Advice for someone considering an unconventional living space? • Margaret: Try it. You can always move. We were worried about making noise for each other, and having private space, but our schedules sync enough that it wasn’t really an issue. I wouldn’t want to try to have children in here. It’s not a typical space, but it will feel like home once you’ve been in it for a little while.

5 | NOISE

Clockwise from top: Bedroom: The Brinkmans’ loft has a bedroom nook with built-in bookshelves that help separate the space. Kitchen: Tin ceiling tiles and hardwood floors give the loft a vintage feel. Hang your hat: The couple hangs retro maps, clocks and hats above desks on the exposed brick walls. Warm and cozy: A working wood-burning fireplace helps keep the loft warm. Party central: A neon saxophone sign greets guests in the atrium outside the Brinkmans’ apartment, which is a converted ballroom.

What are the challenges of the space? • Lance: You have to have a giant dust mop. • Margaret: We thought really hard about trying to define spaces so it still felt like a home and wasn’t just a big open spot. We needed to find more furniture to fill it. My parents’ dining room table (is) normally an enormous table. To put it in here, without the extended pieces, it looks tiny and ridiculous.

| lansingnoise.com

What’s your favorite element of the space? • Margaret: I think the uniqueness. I’ve never seen another place like this. It used to be home to the fraternity organization the Oddfellows. This room used to be the ballroom. It has a really cool feel to it. It’s relaxed, it’s not pretentious, it’s very livable.

JULIE BECKER

Julie Becker, 24, lives in Lansing with Oscar the dog The space: 1,200 square feet. 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. The rent: $850 Can’t beat her: Commute. Becker works in the house next door to her apartment as an ideation specialist for Motion Marketing & Media.

6 | NOISE

| lansingnoise.com

What’s your design style? • My style is scavenger eclectic. I like to find things as I go, so it was really hard when I had my first apartment because I wanted things to be decorated right away. It’s about taking time to find things that actually mean something.

Clockwise from top: Memory lane: Becker’s hallway photo collage is made up of framed photography by friends and local artists. Bright and bold: The giant silverware hanging on the wall was a splurge for Becker, but the table and chairs are revamped old pieces. Going green: Herbs and plants grow in the kitchen windowsill in recycled containers. Cozy combos: Soft lighting and a comfy chair warm up Becker’s bedroom. A vintage trunk doubles as a side table and additional storage.

Where do you get design inspiration? • A lot of the things that I do here are influenced by what I do at work. I also really like antiquing and old things. The more I can integrate old with new and scavenging (the better). What’s your favorite element of the apartment? • The bookcase. It’s all the things that make me happy. It’s basically is a collection of the literature that I’ve read since I was in basically ninth grade English, mixed with my Harper’s Bizarre collection, photos of my friends and family and some of my most prized tchotchkes. I just feel like this is everything that I stand for, old and new, things that are small but meaningful. You’ve lived in the new apartment for less than one year. What are the challenges of this new space? • I came from 600 square feet that I thought were decorated immaculately. Moving into a space that was much larger, with a hallway, foyer, the challenge was filling the space to make it look cozy but not like I threw something in there. And the rugs — I have a lot more rugs than I did in my old apartment and rugs are expensive. Any advice for folks decorating their first place? • A lot of times people will ask if I will come over and decorate their space. The thing that’s really hard is that style is so personal. If you want your apartment to look like mine, sure I’ll come over and decorate, but it’s really about finding your own personal style and what makes you happy. I feel like if you have a place to come home to every day, it should be something that you love and makes you feel really happy when you walk in the door. You’ve done some painting in the apartment. Any other do-it-yourself projects you’re proud of in the space? I do a lot of, I don’t want to call it restoration, but refurbishing and repurposing. What I really like is to take things and use them for a different purpose. A wine glass for flowers, garden baskets for shelves.

Rockin’ country band

The Rock Canyon Band makes country music with a rock & roll feel. The Lansing-based band’s current fulllength, “We’ve Come A Long Way,” pays respect to the classic country of Vince Gill and George Strait while adding the pop-rock of contemporary country. Think Chickenfoot, Nickelback, Kid Rock. Jody Chelf (guitar, vocals), Bing Langham (bass, vocals) and Warren Moeggenberg (drums) make up the Lansingbased three-piece, and the guys headline two dates at The Whiskey Barrel in East Lansing this weekend. When it comes to songwriting, egos are in check. “Personally, I have written with quite a few different people, and writing with these two characters was the easiest thing musically I have ever done,” Moeggenberg said. “We had a lot of fun with this project.” What makes a good country song? The song needs to “speak to someone,” Moeggenberg said. “It may be just putting a smile on someone’s face or an urge to get out of your chair and dance” he said. “Basically, I think if you can make someone tilt their head and think, ‘hmmmm,’ you’ve accomplished your objective.” • The Rock Canyon Band • 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, The Whiskey Barrel Saloon • 410 S. The tartar sauce at Oade’s Bar & Grill is homemade. Could anything say “personal touch” any better? And I’m not just saying I was told the tartar sauce was homemade; the minute it arrived, sitting nonchalantly in my fish basket, I knew it looked special. Then I tasted it. WOW. I asked Andrea Guerrero, the bartender who had just emerged from the kitchen with my food in hand, what kind of crazy amazing sauce this was. “Oh, I made it,” she said. “We have regular tartar sauce back there, but when I’m working I like to make it the way I’d want to eat it.” So what does homemade tartar sauce have to do with the kind of place Oade’s Bar & Grill is? Everything. Guerrero puts the same personal touch on her tartar sauce, drink pouring and general hospitality as she would for her friends and family — namely because she considers all her customers to be friends and family.

“When I first started working here seven years ago, I’d just moved here from Iowa,” she said. “Everyone who came in here became my friend. I hang out with them outside of work — being at work is kind of like just hanging out with friends.” A lot of those friends are fellow bar and restaurant employees, who are particularly fond of Oade’s. “It’s a young crowd,” Guerrero said, “between 21-30 mostly.” Though the regulars are on the young side, the mood is much more relaxed than the dance clubs or college bars usually dominated by 20-somethings. Though Oade’s features a DJ on Fridays and Tuesday Karaoke, the bar is typically filled with more socializing among ‘regulars’ than bumping and grinding. One of those regulars is Jerry Garrigus. “I’ve been here ever since the place opened up 1987,” he

said. “It’s a nice local, neighborhood-type bar.” As if 24 years as a regular didn’t express Garrigus’ loyalty, he also built the water pong tables. Garrigus also invented one of the most unique items on the menu, the roast beef quesadilla. “It sounds weird, but it’s awesome,” said Guerrero. “It’s our most popular thing on the

Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday to Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday. Hook-up factor: A bunch of 20-something restaurant employees drinking, chatting, dancing and not being on the schedule until noon the next day? Yes. I’d say it’s rather high. Mural quality factor: Most mural-ed bars feature the local college sports teams. Oade’s wall-length mural is of the interior of Oade’s, which I think is awesome. Heard that name Natalie Burg photo before? It was as if you could hear a collective “oooooof” around the mid-Michigan area around 2:30 p.m. on January 1 as the wind was mercilessly let out of our formerly 11-1 sails. My friend asked me, “Is Alabama getting a head-start on every snap?” Bowl-game-boat adrift or not, the fleet is headed in the right direction. While we might not match up against the man-monsters of the SEC elite this season, I’m confident that the program will bounce back to start the 2011 season in winning fashion. (By the way, if there ever comes a time when something in the shape of Alabama DE Marcell Dareus runs full-tilt in my direction with ill intentions, I plan to assume a prone position and feign death.)

U-M COACH? WHO CARES!

As of press time, embattled Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez has NOT been officially sacked by the Wolverines — but something serious is looming. There’s flotsam about Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh coming to Ann Arbor. There’s jetsam about Brady Hoke returning to the Maize and Blue from San Diego State. Who knows? Maybe U-M AD David Brandon will try to snatch an NFL stud for the job. The best part about all of this drama is that MSU is quietly settling into an offseason that will be far less tumultuous. At this point, Michigan administration has badly mishandled the situation. The Wolverines’ ability to recruit effectively has been badly marred by the poor timing of decisions, and the players have to be reeling from three consecutive turbulent seasons. Regardless of what happens this week at the coaching position, the program has a mountain to climb to get back to the greatness of years gone by. Andi Osters, 28, is a Michigan State graduate.
