Fit to be tried

Personal Training Manager Jermaine Alexander, 39, of Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club, demonstrates an ab wheel, which is a mainstay for core work. Matthew Dae Smith | NOISE

Ellen Warren | MCT News Service

About half the country has made a New Year’s resolution to get fit. The other half is thinking about it. With that in mind, I rang in 2011 with my own resolution: to check out some of the most popular As Seen on TV exercise gizmos to see if they would do any good. With the help of a trio of personal training/fitness specialists, I tested six pieces of equipment, each priced under $20. Two turned out to be really worthwhile. The four others ranged from lousy to laughable.

BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY

SHAKE WEIGHT, $19.95 “Go from flab to fabulous,” says the workout DVD that came with this device — the most expensive of the six in my test. “It’s a total gimmick,” says Krissy Ray, 24, one of my three exercise consultants, all from Advocate Fitness. But if you want a good laugh, watch the slow motion clip of the audience using Shake Weights in the Sept. 16 “shared experience” segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. “This is filthy,” says Fallon guest, actress Emma Stone. “It’s practically pornographic.” (Watch it here: http://bit.ly/c3ce9P)

GREAT INVESTMENT

DELUXE SPEED ROPE (AKA JUMP ROPE), VALEO, $12.95 “I would take a jump rope any day over a $1,000 treadmill,” Perez says. You can go slow on a treadmill and get comfortable but when jumping rope, “You can’t cheat,” he says. “These have been around forever. That’s because they’re effective. Jumping rope is as good as any cardio exercise you can do,” Shanahan says. “You can get a lot accomplished in a short amount of time,” he says. Ellen says: “I’m now sold on jumping rope (portable, packable) but my personal preference is a leather or segmented jump rope. Learn more at www.drjump.com.

|

Are these exercise gizmos a good fit?

GEL FLEX TUBE, BALLY, $11.95 “A total bomb. Not worth it,” says Shanahan. And he says the instruction sheet is “stupid.” “Everything you do on this feels really goofy. All the motions are unnatural,” agrees Ray, adding, “The concept is really garbage.” “This would not really do anything,” Perez says.

Now on Thursdays JAN. 27 – FEB. 02

DEFINITELY NOT

DUO WHEEL, EVERLAST, $14.95 “That thing’s awesome,” says exercise specialist Seth Shanahan, 27. “We really like this,” Ray says. “I’m a frequent user,” chimes in trainer Jesse Perez, 35. In fact, all three trainers say the ab wheel is part of their fitness regime. They pronounce this one solidly made with easy-to-understand instructions.

YOUR HOME GYM?

The experts I consulted say you don’t need expensive gear to get a thorough workout at home. They recommend a high-quality jump rope for cardio. And to work all your muscles, invest in two quality resistance bands — one heavy, one medium — at $11 or so apiece. “What we’re saying is ‘keep it simple’ which is better than using all these fancy toys,” says personal trainer Krissy Ray. Before you buy home exercise equipment: • Go online and check the comments. • Consult with experts at a gym. • Think about the assembly. Who will do it? How much will it cost? • Treadmills and stationary bikes can be picked up cheap at yard sales. • Keep it simple. Jump rope and resistance bands are cheap and effective. • Remember that fitness takes hard work. Period.

GOOD IDEA BUT ...

CHIN-UP/SIT-UP BAR, VALEO, $15.95 Shanahan says a bar is one of his favorite pieces of exercise equipment but this particular one “is a piece of junk.” When it’s wedged into a doorway you can’t use it for pull-ups — although instructions show you can — because your elbows hit the door frame. Also, the foam handgrips are misplaced, says Ray: “They made it wrong.” Other door frame products with curved mounts solve the elbows problem but check user comments online before buying to avoid problems.

5 | NOISE

WORTH IT

TWIST BOARD, EVERLAST, $12.99 “What is this?” asks Perez, puzzled by what this swiveling disc is supposed to do. Because it’s hard to stay balanced on the thing, “It just makes everything more dangerous. You’d probably be better off doing exercises on the floor,” Ray says. “This thing is just weird,” she says. “If you’re on a budget there’s other things you should spend your money on,” Shanahan says.

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals III/IV

6 | NOISE

| lansingnoise.com

(PAX AM RECORDS)

First things first — this is not a new Ryan Adams album. The tracks contained herein are leftovers from the “Easy Tiger” sessions of 2007, and serve as a musical time machine that disregards the singer’s last three years (and the “Cardinology” album). The unvaulted result is a double-album of straightforward rock, and the first Adams LP with the Cardinals that avoids Grateful Dead-flavored country entirely. As a Ryan Adams superfan, I see a multitude of strengths in the album and a few standout highlights, particularly the anthemic swagger of “Users,” and “The Crystal Skull,” a midtempo number short on Indiana Jones references but features a terrific vocal performance. Still, Adams continues to release whatever he wants, with seemingly little in the way of quality control. As such, unless you are a complete convert, “III/IV” is ultimately an unnecessarily long set of only pretty good tunes that could have survived as a web-only release.

‘Middle of the Mitten’ back with variety Anne Erickson | NOISE

The Record Lounge brings a local, hip flavor to Abbott Street in downtown East Lansing. The shop, connected to vintage store Scavenger Hunt, offers a large selection vinyl, as well as local bands’ CDs, DVDs and cassettes. The shop holds its third annual “Middle of the Mitten” Record Lounge Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 29. The show is dedicated to showing off Mid-Michigan’s burgeoning musical talent, with bands from every genre. “I try to include every element I would ever want to see at a local show,” said Joel Heckaman, who is the Record Lounge’s local music director. “There are several other Michigan festivals, but

Annual local music showcase

there’s nothing quite like ‘Middle of the Mitten,’” he added. “The lineup is great from top to bottom. There are door prizes, tickets are cheap, the crowd’s going to be phenomenal and it’s right in our backyard.” New this year is an acoustic stage that will keep the music going between sets. “It’s a great way to get more people involved and have more live music for the fans, and it was a very natural addition to the production of the show,” Heckaman said. Expect one killer show after the next, plus a raffle and giveaways from local businesses. As always, the point is simply to have fun — at a totally local event. “People who come specifically for one or two bands should be able to stay and have fun the entire night, and anyone who appreciates music should be able to have a blast for at least most of that time,” Heckaman said. What to expect at the fest?

DETAILS{

• The Record Lounge “Middle of the Mitten” Local Showcase • 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 • Featuring all Michigan bands including Adam Dahl, Versus The Ocean, Nathan K., Elliot Street Lunatic, Joe Hertler, Your Best Friend, Raffle, The Summer Pledge, Scott Brown Countdown, Frank And Earnest, Life Size Ghost, John Watrous, The Bearinger Boys • The Loft (above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. Sprawling indie rock, packed with originality and pep. “At the actual show, I get the relief of being done with all of the planning and promoting, the adrenaline rush of coordinating several dozen people for hours on end, and I get to see all of my favorite bands on one stage,” Heckaman said. “It’s easily the most exciting, exhausting, entertaining night of the year.”

Raw sounds of Silverstein

The guys of post-hardcore band Silverstein are overachievers. In the past decade they’ve been together, the Canadian guys have released four LPs, two EPs, a live DVD and other random musical tidbits online. They’ve played all the biggest music fests, from the Vans Warped Tour to Taste of Chaos to Australia’s Soundwave. The band’s fifth studio album, “Transitions,” finds it at its rawest, with a bevy of b-sides and rarities that are pretty scream-y and heavy, but still work in poppy choruses and catchy rhythms. See the band tear it up at The Loft in Lansing Friday, Jan. 28. • Fusion Shows presents Silverstein, Miss May I, Pierce the Veil, The Chariot, A Bullet For Pretty Boy • Doors 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28 • The Loft (Above Harem Urban Lounge), 414 E. CD release for Occasus

Lansing-based heavy metal outfit Occasus releases its new, self-titled CD on Saturday at Blackened Moon Concert Hall, and the album is loaded with bottom-heavy riffs and aggressive rhythms. Recorded in drummer and multi-instrumentalist Raymond Crane’s home studio in DeWitt, the album finds Occasus in a different place than when the guys first started jamming in late 2008. “Our sound has changed drastically, but you can still tell it’s us,” Crane said, who along with Ben Hamlin (guitar, vocals), Eric Potts (guitar, vocals), Sam Evans (vocals), Jamie Mosshart (bass, vocals) makes up Occasus. “A large part of the difference is the improvement of playing skill in the individual members … I feel like an experienced player, but the whole attitude towards music should be on improvement and bettering yourself while still keeping it your passion.” Crane produced the album under his production company, Craneomatic. “My music growth has blown up not only as a musician getting more serious about my skill level but as a behind the scenes producer/recording artist,” he says. • Occasus, Dozic, All Ends Black, Blacktooth Brigade, Medicine Head • 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 • Blackened Moon Concert Hall, 3208 S. THE GREEN DOOR BLUES BAR & GRILL 2005 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing 482-6376 www.green doorlive.com

Green Door more than great blues tunes Having been to the The Green Door on multiple occasions to enjoy the well-known rotation of great live music, I was planning on being wholly unsurprised by my visit. After all, the place’s identity as the premier blues bar of Lansing featuring music seven days a week has been established for quite some time. What I didn’t realize is that because the entertainment begins at 9:30 p.m. on most nights, I’d never been to the pre-music Green Door that exists between 3 and 9 p.m. each day. Who knew that people ate, drank and gathered at the bar for reasons other than hearing great music? But they do. And it’s almost like being in a totally different bar. For starters, I’ve always been impressed that for being known as the hotspot for high-quality live music, The Green Door is disarmingly unpretentious. However, take the hipsters off the stage and turn on the lights, and it’s even less so. Between the Miller Light banners, various beer mirrors and rattling ceiling fan, if you didn’t know where you were, you’d really have to question the hip cat in the bar’s logo. I was there on a Thursday,

which is half-off pizza night, and was among a crowd that included college students, pairs of middle-aged folks and a table full of retirees. Apparently such a mixed bag is par for the course regardless of the day. “We get quite a diverse group of people,” said Kristine Shaw, who has worked at The Green Door for five years. “It kind of the depends on the band who’s playing each night, but we also get a lot of regulars who are just from the neighborhood.” Perhaps it’s this laid-back atmosphere, or the daily food and drink specials that attract the neighbors even more than the music. I found the pizza to be well worth the visit, even sans music. And though some nights do feature acts that require a cover, there is no cover on Tuesdays through Thursdays or Sunday — a must-know fact for neighborhood regulars. The Green Door often hosts

community events as well, giving back to the neighborhood that supports them. “We’re very involved in the community,” Shaw said. “Though we’re normally closed on Sunday afternoons, we’ve opened to sponsor different events for families, police officers who have been shot, or for the Capital Area Blues Society.” Though there may be more to The Green Door than just live music, it certainly is mostly about live music. Everywhere you look, band posters and show announcements cover the walls, and it’s hard to miss the stage and dance floor that take up a good chunk of the interior. “We’re the only Lansing area bar with live music seven days a week,” Shaw said. “Most of the bands are local. Most the bands who play here during the week have a blues feel or are cover bands from the ’70s and ’80s.” And on those nights — which is to say every night — after the lights have dimmed and pizza specials have expired, there’s no doubt that The Green Door is all about live music. SPORTS

Burning thighs an achy memento of first ski trip There are six people in the world that know what happened last weekend on my ski trip to Caberfae Peaks near Cadillac, and it will remain that way. However, I’ll afford those of you reading a few niblets of detail about the skiing portion of the weekend, as promised, because I value your continued loyalty to both this column and my ridiculousness. Let me begin by saying that my athletic prowess has declined significantly in the last five years, and more importantly, in the last twelve months. My once semichiseled physique courtesy of P90X has long faded and atrophied, and the old bod’ just doesn’t take a beating like it used to. Needless to say, I’m thrilled that they list my age below. That may have to be remedied when the big 3-0 gets here. Friday afternoon, our group suited up in the massive amounts of Dick’s Sporting Goods gear we’d purchased (mere hours before, in some cases) and headed to the mountain. Several rookie errors took place for me, almost immediately. First, one should always remember that snow equipment is best worn with an empty bladder. Trying to relieve yourself in a public restroom with the apparel equivalent of an elephant on your person is not an experience I’d like to frequent. Second, one should sit down while attempting to strap into ski boots. I was heaving like I’d just run a 10K after three minutes of bent-over pushing and wheezing and shoving and … well, it was less than attractive. By the time I’d made it out to the actual lift, I was quite sweaty but filled with anticipation. I pulled down my 1974 ski goggles (thanks, Ma!) and boarded the chair lift. That’s right — totally skipped the bunny hill.

A NDI O S T ER S ostersan@gmail.com

My more experienced companion advised against trying the bunny tow rope, as it would probably just damage my confidence. A correct assumption. I had my ass on that chair lift like a pro and was riding up the side of a mountain and feeling like Pikabo Street when everything suddenly seemed WAAAAYYYY bigger than it looked from the bottom of the hill. I simultaneously realized that I was going to have to dismount the moving chair I was on with no idea how to execute the action. Cue blonde-inborrowed-ski panic. I got off the lift. Appendages intact and ready to barrel down the Green Circle run, I took it half-speed and realized ... I can totally swing this. The crisp six-degree air and snow dusted my cheeks as I cruised down the hill, feeling accomplished and exceedingly awesome. It did not faze me that children under the age of five were speeding past me on all sides. I was SKIING. A dozen or so runs later, it was time to head back to the lodge. Fingers and toes were numb and I’d done enough squatting to make my thighs burn for a week (trust me, it’s still happening). I’ll definitely ski again — and I’d really recommend it to beginners. Conversely, I would NOT recommend night sledding when the windchill is below 20, even after a few hot toddys.

“The crisp sixdegree air and snow dusted my cheeks as I cruised down the hill ... It did not faze me that children under the age of five were speeding past me on all sides.”
