Rap-rock band Hollywood Undead in Battle Creek

Six-piece rap-rock outfit Hollywood Undead is back with “American Tragedy” (out March 15), the follow-up to the band’s 2008 debut, “Swan Song.” On the new album, the Los Angeles-based group — which plays two Michigan shows this weekend — has embellished on the rap-metal of its first effort, with even more emphasis on empowering rhymes and explosive hooks, giving it a darkly hip, almost arty rock sound. “I think ‘American Tragedy’ is a lot like our first record, but it’s a lot heavier, and I think the songwriting is better, because as you get older, you get better at your craft,” said J-Dog,

That ray of light, J-Dog said, is central to Hollywood Undead’s mission of finding faith in negative places. “Nobody wants to go to a show and get bummed out. Listening to music, buying a CD, seeing a show — it’s all supposed to be an escape instead of an enforcement of reality. So, we write about some dark things because everyone has a dark side, but the whole idea is to make people feel better.”

who plays rhythm guitar, keyboards, synthesizers and does programming for Hollywood Undead. He said the album, named after what the band deems the ‘American tragedy’ of this generation, turned out darker than anticipated. “The theme is what’s going on in our country right now ... and the hard times people are going through.” “Hear Me Now,” the first single, is No. 21 on active rock radio. “It’s actually a different song because typically, anybody writes a song introspectively and looks within themselves. But, ‘Here Me Now,’ is written about what everybody is going through right now,” he said. “For the first time, we looked outside of what we do and went to the audience itself, and that to me, made it special.” Despite the dim motifs on “American Tragedy,” the album still has hope.

Reno’s Spartan Five Way Chili is a low-spice, chunky, flavorful mix that’s topped with macaroni and cheese and sour cream.

Chili challenge

If you ask 10 people how they prefer their chili, you’ll most likely get 10 different answers. Whether it’s heavy on beans, spice or beef, there’s no one recipe that appeals to the masses or one right way to make chili. Everyone has a preference, so that’s what makes taste testing fun to do. Thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations, we set our sights on trying a few bowls of chili in the Lansing area. And with several more long weeks of winter left, it’s the perfect comfort food to warm up with. Other chili worth mentioning: Beggar’s Banquet in East Lansing, Bonnie’s Place in Lansing and Sweet Linda’s Cafe in Grand Ledge.

HINT OF SPICE

Leo’s Spirits & Grub 2085 W. Grand River Ave., Okemos, 349-1100 The Northwood Chili is my kind of chili — beans, tomato chunks, finely ground beef and a hint of spice that all blend together nicely to create a smooth, consistent texture. It’s simple but still has a distinct flavor. It’s available in a bread bowl ($4.99), bowl ($3.99) or cup ($2.99). Add cheese for $.50 extra, or onions at no cost.

NEW IN TOWN

Zoup! 214 S. Washington Square, Lansing, 367-7400 The spicy black bean chili has a silky consistency with a beany texture and a bold spice level. The seasoning provides a good kick, but it’s not so spicy that you’ll be reaching for water after every spoonful. While black bean chili wouldn’t be my first preference, at least it provides a healthy amount of fiber. This option is low fat, dairy free and vegetarian. An 8-ounce side is $3.95 and a 16-ounce cup is $4.95, and it comes with your choice of bread.

Harrison Roadhouse 720 E. Michigan Ave., East Lansing, 337-0200 There’s a reason why the white chicken chili ($4.99) is a perennial favorite at area chili cook-offs. I haven’t found any other white chicken chili that tops this creamy, cheesy, spicy concoction. It was a little light on the chicken, however. There’s also the Bourbon beef chili, which has big chunks of meat soaked in seasoning and Bourbon, bringing out a dark, almost smoky, taste. It feels like a hearty “man’s” chili. But it’s all meat and not enough actual chili, which is a slight drawback.

Seattle-based Something Weird is a fantastic company, distributing a dragon’s hoard of cult and exploitation films, loaded with generous supplements like bonus feature films, trailers and poster art. It also generates the most sensational, promising box art and film descriptions, as literally every title it releases sounds jaw-droppingly awesome. The “Infernal Double Feature” including “Joys of Jezebel” is a prime example, sounding like a fantastically sleazy drive-in experience, but alas, only delivers an entertaining but slightly dull nudie picture. While promising writhing bodies and a psychedelic Hell, “Jezebel” is not more than an early ’70s oddity, heavy on cringe-worthy excellent dialogue, but despite the lurid premise and copious amounts of PG-13 by today’s standards nudity, is a relatively tame viewing experience. With the included “Devilish Trailers” and bonus shorts, the package would be prime background fare at a themed party.

Reno’s Sports Bar & Grill 1310 Abbot Road, East Lansing, 351-7366 5001 W. Saginaw Highway, Lansing, 321-7366 If you like a lot going on in your chili, the Spartan Five Way Chili ($8.99) is for you. The chili is topped with creamy macaroni and cheese, Cheddar jack cheese, red onions and sour cream. The chili itself is smooth, with finely ground meat and beans that are complemented by the other ingredients. The heat factor is low to none. The extra ingredients do a good job of masking the chili’s slightly bland, borderline watered-down chili taste. This is more than enough to share as a side, or as a meal for one. It’s served with tortilla chips and a side salad.

GET IN THE MOOD

• What: The Jungle Love event begins with an up-close introduction to some of the zoo’s animals. Entrance fee includes drinks and desserts while the zoo’s staff presents a multimedia show about the bizarre world of animal courtship and mating behaviors. • When: Saturday, Feb. 5 • Time: 6:30 to 8 p.m. • Where: Potter Park Zoo Discovery Center • Cost: $15 per person or $25 per couple • Details: Visit www.potterparkzoo.org or call (517) 342-2709. Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Most of the programming at Potter Park Zoo is meant for younger students, and sometimes reproductive topics require a bit of tip-toeing. That’s why education curator Dennis Laidler is looking forward to letting loose at the Jungle Love event, which is for ages 18 and older. “We can be tongue and cheek,” Laidler said. “Without being vulgar, we have a lot of fun. The first couple of years that we did this, I wasn’t sure what kind of questions we’d get because I thought people would be really self-conscious.” Laidler had no reason to be nervous. At the first annual Jungle Love event, the Q&A kicked off with a 75-year-old woman waving her hand, eager to ask a question. “I’ve lived my whole life in the city, I feed the squirrels all the time,” she blurted out. “I’ve never seen squirrels do it. How do squirrels do it?” From there, the floodgates opened for questions. “Basically anything we see in human sexual behavior, whether we consider it normal or abnormal, occurs in nature,” Laidler said. “There are so many amazing things that go on. For most animals, everything in their genes is designed to pass on

those genes. That’s the nice thing about nature. It’s so amazing, there are so many (real) bizarre things, that you don’t have to worry about contriving things to come up with something, not only humorous, but interesting. We can do some really fun things, but it’s all factual.” It’s not the first time Potter Park has held an event for adults near Valentine’s Day, but the format is new. In the past, the zoo’s Jungle Love evening involved taking people out in small groups through the park to talk about animals and their sex capades. “The problem is in February it’s rather nippy,” Laidler said. That was the major motivating factor for changing things up this year to offer a multimedia presentation with a combination of graphics, video and photos. Some animals will be on site for participants to learn from, too. The move to an indoor setting also allows for the addition of desserts and drinks. “Part of the challenge is that people still have a perception of zoos as entities of entertainment or recreation,” Laidler said. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room to have some fun in the process. “It’s guaranteed to make you blush,” zoo communications director Jake Pechtel said about the Jungle

Love event. “It’s not for your grandparents.” Pechtel has made a big push for the zoo to engage an adult audience, and Jungle Love is just one of the “after hours” events scheduled in the upcoming year. “Parents love us (and) kids love us,” he said. “But there are hundreds of thousands of people in between that sometimes don’t think of coming to the zoo. The events haven’t been geared toward that 20to 30-something demographic (so) I think this event is great for that.” Since the San Fransisco Zoo started a Valentine-themed event two decades ago, it’s become a common occurrence at many zoos. “Things that would be absolutely taboo in humans are normal for some species,” Laidler said. “Some animals change gender in a matter of minutes or days. In nature it’s not good or bad, it’s just how it works.” By adding more events for adults to the zoo’s schedule, Pechtel has noticed some new courtship behaviors on the grounds. “There are so many young couples here that are obviously out for a walk or are on a date,” Pechtel said. “I think it’s cool to see that becoming a little more apparent as we become more popular online.”

You don’t see why other people make such a big deal about the antics of characters on “Jersey Shore.” You love to flirt — and take it further — whenever the mood strikes you too.

MATCH: BONOBO MONKEY

For this animal, calling their sexual activity “casual sex” is an understatement. Bonobo monkeys don’t just use sexual contact for procreation. They use it to resolve conflicts among adults, decide how to distribute food and for social bonding.

The fun is all in the foreplay for you. You like to tease your partner, play hard to get and your idea of an ideal date involves plenty of games.

Who needs men? You’re happy without them, and a night out with the girls is more appealing to you than finding a man.

MATCH: PEACOCK

Explanation: Peacocks use their large feathered train in courtship and mating rituals. Females choose their mates according to the vibrant colors and size of the feathers. A fabulous batch of feathers indicates good genes to the female. And evolution has done all the work for these birds, no hair gel necessary to look like a stud.

Your friends tease you and call you Mr. Mom, but you don’t mind. As a male, you gladly step up to help raise your children, taking on roles typically associated with mothering without feeling self-conscious.

These creatures take girl power to a whole new level. All New Mexico Whiptail Lizards are female. When they reproduce, all of the offspring are female. Its eggs require no fertilization, and children are complete clones of their mothers.

You’re conservative when it comes to love. You take time to find the right person and when you decide she’s the one, you never let her go. Even time apart is no threat to your relationship.

MATCH: BOWER BIRD

MATCH: CLOWN FISH

MATCH: WOLF

Explanation: Wolves romp around when it’s close to their breeding season. The play fighting is a form of flirting, the female’s way of letting the alpha male know she is interested. It sometimes even looks like dancing, with both animals on their hind legs.

You are a wild child. Your sense of adventure leads you to approach romance with a “the more the merrier” mentality.

If “Finding Nemo” was scientifically accurate, by the end of the movie, Nemo wouldn’t have to look far for his mother — his father would have become his mother. All clown fish are born male, and become female when it’s necessary for procreation. Also, if the movie was scientifically accurate, they probably wouldn’t have made friends with a shark.

MATCH: RED-SIDED GARTER SNAKE These snakes take part in a “mating ball” where dozens of males compete for a female in a slithering swarm. Doesn’t sound much different from a night at the club, does it?

Instead of using fancy feathers to attract a mate, the bower bird builds a nest on the forest floor from twigs, leaves, and moss. The bird then adds whatever it can to class up the joint — colorful feathers, pebbles berries or shells. These are not nests for baby birds — just bachelors looking for love.

MATCH: NEW MEXICO WHIPTAIL LIZARD

MATCH: EMPEROR PENGUIN

Most penguin species are monogamous, and male Emperor Penguins care for the next generation while spending months apart from their female companions.

Before you bring a new beau into your home for a special occasion, you make sure the mood is perfect. Fresh flowers, lit candles and maybe a sparkly bauble for the one you love fill the table.

You take hours getting ready for a date, primping and prepping your look before you hit the town and strut your stuff looking for a special someone. After all, the clothes make the man, right?

It has been a hoppy new year so far as I keep coming across a number of new highly hopped beers, but something is definitely different from the past. It used to be that many of the hoppy beers that were available had a horrible, harsh afterburn. I mean the type that after several hours of other beers and shots of whisky, the harshness clung to the inside of my mouth like napalm. The majority of the imperial IPAs I’ve had recently are bursting with hop flavor and aroma, but the harshness is absent. Outburst is the latest example, and beers like it are finally turning me around to appreciate the joys of American hops. Outburst’s International Bittering Unit hop measurement clocks in at 80 IBU, which amounts to about four pounds of hops per barrel; a typical mild beer might have an IBU of 20. However, there is no unpleasantness — only a nice piney-citrusy aroma and flavor that permeates the beer. There is bitterness that lingers for a bit in the mouth after each drink, but not the type that sticks with you for hours. While the hops in Outburst dominate, I could actually smell sweet caramel malt in the background when I first poured the dark amber beer into a glass, which is not a quality I come across very often. It’s a character that’s also appar-

ent as it warms up, politely staying unobtrusive. What’s really interesting about Outburst is that it drinks like a 5-percent ale — it has a fairly crisp body, creamy mouthfeel and no noticeable alcohol taste. I drank half my glass before noticing the 8.5-percent alcohol content on the label. If I hadn’t, I would have never guessed — unless I had drank another bottle. Outburst was originally introduced in spring 2010 as a keg-only beer and it received enough positive feedback that Pyramid decided to give it the fullout national distribution in bottles. It will be released this month and should be readily available throughout the U.S.

Nearly century-old bar a St. John’s staple There’s one thing you won’t see when you arrive at Bruno’s Wonder Bar in St. Johns: any evidence that it’s called “Bruno’s Wonder Bar.” That’s because, as terrific as the 95-year-old-bar’s real name is, it was unofficially shortened to simply Bruno’s during the second generation of the Mazzolini Dynasty. “It was my grandfather’s name,” said Dean Mazzolini, the bar’s third and current owner. “My father doesn’t care for the ‘wonder’ part. I think he thought it was kind of … I don’t know. But he didn’t like it.” Not to cause family turmoil or anything, but the good news is Dean’s always been a fan of the ‘Wonder’ Bar. Before he took over ownership, he made T-shirts for the bar featuring a Superman symbol and the old name, which didn’t please his father at all. “I just about lost my job,” he laughed. But hey, Dean’s the owner now. And since he and Bruno

Mazzolini himself like the “wonder,” part maybe there’s hope for the future. That may be a lot about the bar’s history, but that’s because Bruno’s is all about history. Bruno Mazzolini built the place nearly 100 years ago a few blocks down from its current location. It might still be in its original spot if Bruno himself hadn’t donated money for a church to be built right across the street. Little did he know that bars couldn’t — and still can’t — be located to close to a place of worship. So he virtually evicted himself down the street a few blocks. The town that was literally built around Bruno’s is still deeply involved with the bar. Most patrons are locals, and to say the place has regulars is an understatement. “Any time of day, we could be sitting in another bar and I could tell you exactly who was here,” Mazzolini said, “give or take two or three.” Today, Bruno’s is a place to

go for good food — excellent pizza, I might add — and a relaxed drink with friends. They don’t do any fancy entertainment or dancing, but they support just about every community sport and activity you can think of. Including a senior citizens coffee group. “Every morning we have a group of older gentleman drinking coffee here at 7 a.m.,” said Mazzolini. “They all sort of take care of each other. My father is 83 and he comes and watches them for an hour while I take the kids to school.” That’s right: Bruno’s opens at seven in the morning. Though that used to be the norm for several Lansing-area bars catering to third-shifters from the manufacturing plants, the instances are few and far between these days. Thanks to the community that supports Bruno’s, the practice never stoped.

Hours: 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 2 a.m. Sunday Family friendly factor: Bruno’s is built on family. So yes, absolutely. Hook-up factor: See “family-friendly factor” and the part about the old men’s coffee club for more details. What’s on special: “Everything here is special,” was the charming bartender’s completely true response, Bruno’s has both regular specials, such as “Taco Tuesday” and”Wing Wednesday,” as well as alternating specials other days of the week.Apparently they couldn’t think of any more alliterations between weekdays and their menu options. Deep-fried pickles: In my humble opinion, every bar, restaurant or food stand that offers deep fried pickles deserves special applause and recognition: Here, here, Bruno’s! A historical gem: Bruno Mazzolini moved to St. Johns from Italy and soon after opened the bar, as well as met and married his wife. Not until after the wedding did they realize they’d grown up less than a mile apart in Italy. Greatest. Story. Ever.

Good musicians make good music, and great musicians make great music, plus give back. Thankfully, plenty of the latter are in Mid-Michigan, as the local scene readies for a benefit concert helping the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Local booker Todd E. Karinen put together the show, which happens Thursday, at Mac’s in Lansing. His last benefit show more than over $350 and four Josh David and giant boxes of food. The Dream Jeans “With this show and other Courtesy photo benefit shows, it really goes to show the compassion and caring that’s alive in the Lansing music scene,” he said. “Musicians have such a great gift in that not only can they donate their time, but also their skills for making people happy and helping out the needy in their community.” This year’s lineup is made up of local guys Josh David And The Dream Jeans, The Playback, Narc Out The Reds, The Plurals and The Jackpine Snag. “There is nothing like putting together a show with a bunch of bands that you consider friends, and for a cause like the Greater Lansing Food Bank,” Karinen said. • Benefit for the Greater Lansing Food Bank featuring The Plurals, Narc Out The Reds, The Playback, Josh David and The Dream Jeans, The Jackpine Snag • 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. ‘To Die For’

BY C HR I S T O PHER PIKE (POINT)

It’s no exaggeration to say that I was absolutely obsessed with Christopher Pike’s young adult thrillers as a teen. As a grown-up bookselling book-geek, I was giddy to see this edition come out — a re-release packaging of “Slumber Party” and “Weekend,” two of my favorite Pike novels. I had a blast tripping back to early adolescence while whipping through them again. They’re far from perfect (the dialogue is hilariously stiff at times), but I was still absorbed in what Pike does best: secrets from the past that return in dramatic fashion to punish the guilty parties. The two stories parallel each other in set-up. A group of teens head off for a weekend of fun — a ski trip and a beach party — that is soon derailed by increasingly frightening occurrences. Someone is out to uncover the truth and no one is safe until it comes out. Great, quick reads for a snowbound afternoon.

posed to be a little nippy in Texas. I, like any die-hard NFC fan, hate this decision. Let the cold in! I want to sit on my sectional sofa and watch them suffer! Not really — but these two teams have played in worse weather in over half of their regular-season games than they would this weekend. Alas, the Black Eyed Peas need their temperate climes for the halftime show. It gets harder every year for me to shield readers from my open dislike for the commercial aspect of the Super Bowl, and 2011 is different only in my willingness to openly share that feeling. I know there are those of you who look forward to the Budweiser portion of the program more than the actual contest — both in libations and advertisements. I know there are some of you who just want to win that Super Bowl Squares bet with the family. There are still some others who actually are looking forward to watching the Steelers and the Packers play the football game. Just know that there’s one of us who is very much a proponent of enormous athletic events — when the main focus is solely on the sport itself. The merit and mystique of an NFL title grows dimmer with every added earmark to the Super Bowl. The pipe dream of a more modest finale to a professional season is just that — a dream. But maybe it’s worth a shot to try and convince a few folks that in the end, it should really be about the game itself.

“I read the dome in Dallas will be closed on Sunday ... Alas, the Black Eyed Peas need their temperate climes for the halftime show.”

Every year, in early February, I’m expected to craft something original and spunky about the American spectacle known as the Super Bowl. While it doesn’t pain me to do this, it does irk me that every angle has already been covered over the past two weeks. Whatever I pen, I run the risk of making you read something you’ve already read. Not my style. I was so frustrated with ESPN and other sport media outlets last weekend that I decided to completely cut off any attention I would normally devote to coverage for something as athletically enormous as the Super Bowl. The bloated ticker tape even had me in fits. It’s ridiculous - two straight weeks of nothing but hype. Hype about the teams, the players, the field, the venue, the tickets, the parking, the cheerleaders, the stripper shortage in Dallas (not kidding), the commercials, the food, the betting and on and on we go. I’m a sports fan whose limits know very few bounds — and this year, it all boiled over. Perhaps my disdain for the looming players’ union dispute with NFL owners is tainting my view of things this year: I’m willing to admit that. However, like I mentioned on this week’s “Ginger & The Geek” video-cast, Super Bowl XLV feels like I’m rooting for the lesser of two evils. A lot of that stems from my adoration of the Detroit Lions ... 2012 is a new year, folks. But really: the reason why I’m so Pack-happy this week is because there’s less to hate about Green Bay than the alternative. That is not to say that I won’t be screaming for Aaron Rodgers, B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews to take home a 13th title for the Packers this weekend. I have to scream for someone. I read the dome in Dallas will be closed on Sunday, because (shocker!) it’s sup-
